Finally getting some work done on my challenge OC this week. Or one of them at least.

This is Ecto, a blind batfolk who lives on the Far Side with his twin, Alba. They reside on a Terra known as Stringhold, named for the city-sized arachnoid nest that takes up a good portion of its forests and cave system.

@far-side-skies here's Palmira! She is the loyal handmaid of Princess Sansa and does everything in her power to keep the original first heiress safe and entertained. Encouraging her to learn politics and strategies to be a help to the empire and get the upper hand on her enemies. Her and Fox often butt heads over the teaching they are granting Sansa. Palmira is very by the book and a worry want, just wanting the best for her friend. Sorry for the lack of info, Uni has been busy. Hope ya like her!

my entry for @far-side-skies’s monthly OC challenge!

As one of the Cyclonian Elites and their head strategist, 28 year old Aptornis has steadily gained a reputation of being one of the worst of the five Generals to piss off.

Raised under the wing of Empress Anarchis, she is no stranger to taking and dishing out ruthless methods for the power and glory of her empire. At 19 she reluctantly underwent a crystal enhancement to her brain in the hopes that it would refine her thoughts, instead Aptornis now has the ability to discern a person’s intent. The benefits from this upgrade do little to satiate her endless doubt regarding her plans towards Cyclonia’s war efforts.

As the eldest of her distant cousins, Aptornis has taken to be their leader. Heading their meetings, it’s rare to see her without several glasses of strong alcohol to soothe the inevitable headaches that arise, although she does hold a soft spot for Scimitar, the only person capable of beating her at chess.

this months oc! finally! i had the sketch done for a while but it took me a while to have the time and energy to color her and finish her. for @far-side-skies monthly challenge i present Rica Whitemane. the wife of Whitemane the leader of clan Whitemane for my dawnrunnner fan species. Rica is a melanistic Dawnrunner making all of her fur and scales black. In dawnrunner culture this is bad as they, as the name implies, are linked to the dawn and the sun. they shun darkness. conversely, an albino is considered a divine gift. but they are so revered that it is frowned upon to look at them directly. Whitemane built his clan for the shunned melanistic like his wife and the lonely albino. their clan's territory is terra merbia and the other prides and clans leave them alone because of this. Rica suffered a lot of abuse from her Pride before Whitemane found her. most of her scars as well as her broke horn are the remnants of that abuse and she is small and meek for a dawnrunner (small as in only 6'5") Rica's only saving grace that kept her from her Pride completely abandoning her as a yearling was the other genetic mutation she carries. she has the Lighthorn trait, which makes her horns white instead of dark like the majority of Dawnrunners.

Rica has a very sweet and quiet disposition and she loves Whitemane and their daughter Echo with all her heart.

Reintroducing my old Storm Hawks OC, Captain Rosin, for @far-side-skies challenge! An osprey was so fitting for him, it was the perfect opportunity to push his design.

Species : Skog

Occupation: Captain of the Nightingales.

Age: Early 40's.

Skogs in Atmos are a race wrapped in ambiguity and mystery; keeping to their own, a quiet lot, have a habit for lurking, and becoming livelier only when the sun goes down. These traits haven't gained them a very friendly reputation and work can sometimes be hard to find, but o'l Roisin found opportunity in this misfortune. Gathering his most trusted companions, be formed a crew and marketed themselves as the most skilled professional carriers of precious relics, artifacts, and treasures for high paying customers of Atmos. Who better to transport the rarest, most coveted, most "steal-able" of crystals and baubles than the masters of stealth themselves? Although they refuse to do business with a certain empire...

Traveling only under the guise of darkness, Roisin and his all skog crew, except for the twilight crooner, Ichabod, in the hold, have seen just about all there is to see and the mere mention of their names keeps most Murk Raiders and challengers at bay. However, beneath Roisin's intimidating, wily facade, is the best crazy uncle you never knew you needed. He has a tender spot for children and like most other skog, has a deep love of music and storytelling. He values the lives of his crew and few others closest to him above all else. They're all he has left.

Bird challenge time bird challenge time challenge time-

Here’s my character for June’s bird month for my friends @far-side-skies bird challenge!

Meet Pandion, a talon solider that specializes in stealth and robbery. When there’s a mission that requires stealth and secrecy, she’s usually sent in. She does well in battle too, having been taught by the Dark Ace himself.

Pandion was born on Terra Simian, a Terra full of ape and monkey species. The Terra was well known for their trading systems, and thought of very highly by Atmosia.

That is, until, it was found out the Terra was also making trades with Cyclonia. Out of rash fear of having information shared with Cyclonia, the Council sent their Sky Knights to attack and raid the Terra. For simply also doing business with the enemy.

And who should show up at the right time to fend off the attack? A very young Dark Ace.

He and some other Talons were able to to fend off the attacks, but the raid didn’t come without causalities. Pandion’s parents were killed in the attack. She clung to Ace, and not knowing what to do, he took the young child with him.

The young monkey swear revenge on the Sky knights, for tearing apart her home and her family. Which is why she has no problem in helping in raids on Atmosian Terra’s. She sees it as justice for what those has wronged her had down.

Pandion is very talkative, sneaky, and she often curses a lot. She likes to pull pranks on her fellow talons and mostly enjoys being in her coworkers presences. Ravess and her get along fairly well, sometimes having girl nights together.

Her closest relationship is with Ace though. He’s the man that saved her life, after all. He allows himself to open up with her, and her to him. She’s blindly loyal to him, and hopes that one day, she’ll be just as good a solider as him.

Little rushed at the end but I got it done. My entry for @far-side-skies January Storm Hawks OC contest.

Name: Winslow

Age: 20

Terra: Mesa

Occupation: Street Performer and Informant

When Winslow was very young he was stricken with an illness that left him bedridden and isolated from other kids his age. Often, in order to cheer him up, his grandfather would visit and put on a small magic show. His grandfather was renowned as the greatest performer on Terra Mesa at the time and little Winslow would grow up to try and follow in his footsteps. Eventually when Winslow was better (never cured as he would have to rely on a cane from now on) and the rest of his siblings had moved away, Winslow decided to set out on his own. Unfortunately Winslow did not have the raw talent his grandfather had with a crowd, and although Winslow was highly intelligent and creative, his lack of social skills would be detrimental. Too stubborn to go back home, Winslow was forced to find another way to make money.

As a child, his mother would often open up a window to let the breeze in to give Winslow some fresh air. The local birds would sometimes sneak in because of it. Out of curiosity Winslow would learn how to speak to the birds, who would bring him news of the outside world. Now an adult, he felt embarrassed about his ability, but would soon be forced to rely on it. While speaking to some birds, he learned that they had spotted a man in a wanted poster. After getting the reward money for finding the man, Winslow began using his birds to sell information. Whatever happens on Terra Mesa, Winslow knows about it. He says its just temporary but he’s put off his performance arts since he started his business. Having felt disillusioned with his abilities.

Winslow is a cautious, perceptive, and quick-witted with a lot of curiosity. He can be somewhat quiet among other people and a bit awkward with his words but he’s a kind man. Especially when it comes to birds. He’s also quick to jealousy even if he won’t admit it and a little judgemental. Starling sometimes visits him to keep tabs on her Terra. She isn’t charged of course, since shes the only one who’s figured out his secret.

Finally yeeting together a rough sketch of this month's bird OC(s). I wound up using a pair of identical twins for this one.

Phobos and Deimos Avadat are the youngest children of two high-ranking Talons named Cepheus (deceased) and Cassieopeia Avadat. They've got three older sibilngs: Hamlet (deceased), Monsoon and Andromeda (deceased). By the time the show starts, both of them are in their 40s.

Phobos was a commander of Cyclonia's cavalry division, often at the frontlines riding a pegasus into the thick of battle. Until a skirmish with the Rebel Ducks went seriously wrong and left him scarred and disabled (the picture above is pre-injury as I'm trying to pin down his base appeareance) about a year or two before the return of the Storm Hawks. Instead of retiring outright, he applied to transfer to the beastkeeper division, and now spends his time caring for the pegasus ranks and Cyclonia's other bestial numbers (occucrows, trackbeasts, etc.). It's allowed for him to be able to spend more time with his partner and children, but has severely disappointed his mother. He no longer cares, and some part of him blames her and the pressure she put on him to excel in the Talon ranks on his previous inability to bond with his children.

Deimos is just as, if not more successful than his twin. He's the leader of one of Cyclonia's specialist squadrons, the Fog Howlers. They're a strike team and one of the major players in the invasion and subsequent takeover of Merbia. He's still going strong and working to rise even further up the ranks of the Talon army. Far less laid-back than Phobos, he is of the opinion that Cyclonia's royal family has run its course, and the Empire is due for a change in leadership chosen by the people. He's not the only person with this opinion, and this insurrectionist group is known as the Disciples. Their choice in new ruler? Dark Ace. Phobos and Deimos's nephew.

Quick rough sketch of this month's bird oc.

Meet Lockjaw, a Wallop with vampirism and a member of the wandering Duskblades squadron (lead by Pictus Chrysolophus) and acting as the team's strongman. The peach segments on his face are the result of burns from sunlight, which also blinded him due to repeated exposure.

Storm Hawks Bird OC Challenge - October 2023

Hey all! Sorry for the delay on this, work has yet again kicked my ass the instant I got back from holiday. Anyhow, I would like to announce the bird for spook month! This October we're looking at the shoebill stork (Balaeniceps rex)!

Also known as the whalebill, this 'stork' is actually more closely related to pelicans than Ciconiiform storks. It lives in central tropical Africa, particularly in freshwater swamps. They're fairly quiet birds, but are known to make bill-clattering displays that sound akin to gunfire. The birds have a tendency to stay very still for long periods of time, giving them a statue-like appearance at times.

There's a lot more to be said about these spooky, dino-like birds, but for the sake of brevity, that's where I'll leave things off. If you guys want to know more, there's a ton of information to be found about them online.

The deadline this month is Monday the 30th of October. Rules are under the cut.

Minimum requirements for drawn entries to be put in the winner’s vote are a name, occupation, the character’s home/birth Terra and at least one paragraph (or about 100 words) of written backstory.

Minimum requirements for written (i.e. written dossiers without art, or mini-fics for the character) are 500 words including backstory and appearance. Feel free to make a mini-fic out of this challenge, I’ll make sure to link it with the final collage as well.

Entrants who are part of the Storm Hawks discord server will have the chance of getting a custom role for the next month! If you’re not part of the discord server, please ask for an invite if you’re interested.

You’re not expected to create a character from scratch for this challenge. If you’ve got an older character concept that’s been collecting dust or that you’d like to take the opportunity to revamp, feel free! The goal of this challenge is to inspire people.

Collaborations are allowed! Same rules apply, the only addition is that you and your partner(s) just need to make note of who was responsible for what part of the character.

Throwing this out real quick before putting together the compilation of entries for this month's oc challenge.

A mostly-complete ref for Major Phobos Avadat, who turned into my favourite out of the twins. Deimos devolved into a jackass.

Phobos's injuries that took him off the frontlines were severe, and while scars of any kind are not a source of shame on Cyclonia, they're still raw and uncomfortable even years later. He lost an eye and sustained considerable damage to his vocal chords that has rendered him mostly mute. The prosthetic/mask, made for him by his older brother Monsoon, alleviates some of the discomfort he experiences from them. It's plain, simple, and a bit unnerving to some, but it gets the job done. His family doesn't mind it, and the animals don't care so long as he feeds them on time.

And the kirin form...

After Cyclonia Rising, after Cyclonis abandoned her Empire for the Far Side to avoid the humiliation of her defeat, the Sky Knights took over. Unbeknownst to anyone though, the act of ripping out an entire chunk of Terra Cyclonia's landmass had awoken something sleeping deep within its core. An ancient demigod who once helped found the kingdom of Cyclonia thousands of years ago. Talon the War-Keeper has returned to his people in their perceived greatest hour of need, and has enlisted numerous soldiers as his Disciples. Gifting them a fraction of his abilities so that they may better protect Cyclonia, Phobos is one of those Disciples. He and the others can take the form of a kirin with a clouded mane who can run on air with hoofbeats like thunder. They can harness the power of the wind without the aid of crystals, making them into even more brutal warriors.

Phobos just wishes it hadn't cost him so much before rejoining the fight.

Starting to work on this month's bird OC. I'm doing another demigod Champion, because I got hit with some more inspiration to work on my god lore.

This is Icarus the Thoughtwinder, a demigod renowned for his intelligence. As a mortal, he beat a giant in a battle of wits, which earned him his ascension to Champion status. His job was to build riddles, puzzles and traps to protect high-security locations such as temples, tombs and to keep deadly artefacts under lock and key. He was the architect behind the Forbidden City where an Oracle resided.

Storm Hawks Bird OC Challenge - September 2023 - 2nd Anniversary!! 🎉🎉

Wow. Two years. I've been at this for two years, which I only realised last week. Just... just wow. I didn't expect this fun little challenge to last as long as it has, but I get the feeling it's just going to keep on keeping on. Thank you so much to everyone who has participated in and supported this challenge for the last two years, whether it's been by making characters for it, offering birds to use as prompts or cheering on the artists who have taken part in it. It's such a joy to know that this has inspired people even just a little bit.

So without further ado, I'd like to present this month's bird to everyone. We're going for green again like the last two Septembers with the beautiful flame-throated sunangel (Heliangelus micraster).

This itty bitty little hummingbird is found in Equador and Peru, living on a small area of land on the eastern slope of the Andes. Like most hummingbird species, they feed on nectar from flowers and also eat insects, which they catch in mid-air using a technique called "hawking". They inhabit dense mossy forests at high elevations, and are known to compete with each other for foraging territories.

Unfortunately not much else is known about these birds, but they look absolutely lovely so I couldn't help but use it for the second anniversary.

The deadline this month is a little later than usual at Thursday the 28th of September due to me having holiday stuff right around the usual deadline time. As always, extra photos and an optional colour palette can be found under the cut along with the challenge rules.
