You might not know his name, but if you've been listening to fiction podcasts, you've almost definitely heard his work. Erin Kyan is a transman artist in Melbourne, Australia, and you may well have heard the show he wrote, produced and co-starred in, Love and Luck. You might also have heard some of his other work, having co-wrote and co-produced Nym's Nebulous Notions and Floodlight Viscera, as well as a whole bunch of acting credits to his name, on shows such as Interference, The Nuclear Solution, Mars' Best Brisket, or you might have heard his writing on the Someone Dies in This Elevator episode Hot Wheels, as well as a bunch more appearances in other podcasts as well.
He's done a lot, is what I'm saying.
Erin came out as trans 20 years ago, and unsurprisingly, trans health care in Australia wasn't particularly great for fat trans men at the time, and has spent a long time being unable to get the care he needs. But 20 years is a long time, and things are changing - not only are the gatekeepers no longer there to stop him, but there are surgeons willing to do top surgery, even on fat people like Erin - the surgery date is even booked!
Of course, even in Australia, this kind of surgery costs a lot - It's not on Medicare, you need to go Private. And so, like so many others, he's opening himself up to the generosity of others to help cover at least some of the costs of this surgery.
So, if you would like to give back to an amazing trans man within the fiction podcast world, and you have the capacity to do so (he's very clear about this - if you're making less than $40K a year, you need that money more than he does), Please considering donating to his surgery fund. Even if it's just a little bit, every bit helps.
And if you can't? Reblogging this so that as many people as possible can see it would be a wonderful thing.

MagiSoWo,
I’m in love with a vampire. They tell me the sweetest things… and before them I was not happy with my life. Should I just… give myself to them?
Thank you for your help,
BewitchedWitch
Tumblr media
Dear BewitchedWitch,
You are the only one that can decide what will make you happy in a relationship. But since you come to us for advice, if you are thinking about being turned, we really recommend talking to someone at Fanged, Fledged and Future-proof first. F3 has a lot of information on their website too, if contacting them feels a step too far. But they have great community counselors and excellent peer-support groups for newly fledged vampires.
In general we do think it's very unwise to consent to become a vampire if the only vampire you know is the person turning you. Especially if you are in a relationship with them. We don't need to tell you this is a serious decision and while it can definitely be part of a conversation on the future of your relationship, it is absolutely not the only thing worth discussing.
For an expert’s insight on healthy relationships and (occult) intimacy, we’d like to refer you to our Australian colleague Dr. Olivia Seabrooke, sexologist and folklorist, who hosts the advice programme Supernatural Sexuality.
If you ever feel like chatting, about anything at all, you are always welcome at our community centre.

First Kill from Netflix for the indie podcast ask :D
Okay, from the Wikipedia page I'm getting sapphic romance, forbidden romance, vampires, being caught between alliances, and (teen) drama.
Now, there seems to be an empty spot in this medium where sapphic vampire romance should exist, barring that one episode of Supernatural Sexuality With Dr Seabrooke, and at least half an episode of Monstrous Agonies (both great supernatural relationship/life advice radio show podcasts, check them out).
For forbidden romance, drama, and being caught between, and also the rec that feels closest, I'm going to suggest Elixir, which is set in a magic-fantasy take on the American prohibition era. After the daughter of a lawmaker vanishes, her sister Elsie seeks help from an unlikely source: the owner of a now-illicit hush bar, Vera.
For queer vampire romance you're gonna want to listen to Not Quite Dead, which features nurse Alphie's strange romance with and subsequent slow, horrific transformation into a vampire. Great take on vampirism while retaining the flavour and a solid balance between unsettling horror and only slightly less unsettling romance.
I feel like I would also be silly not to mention Within The Wires, which changes era and format by season but is set in an alternate version of Earth where the ideas of family and nations were dissolved after The Great Reckoning (WWII?). It's very often sapphic and a strange but interesting listen, but I can't guarantee this is what you're looking for.
Based on vibes alone I'm also going to recommend SCP: Find Us Alive, and of course for supernatural sapphic you should not go past Mabel.

Podcasts I like
Welcome to Nightvale - Haven’t gotten caught up, but really enjoyable and absurd.
Tumblr media
Kaleidotrope - one season so far *fingers crossed there will be more* adorbale, kinda dorky, sweet fluff bit of a college broadcast show romance, with tropes and a tiny bit of magic. Also Samoas
Tumblr media
The Magnus Archives - creepy, eerie, strange stories, underlying plot, The Admiral, it’s all good. (also soul crushing but what else do you expect)
Tumblr media
The Bight Sessions - teens with powers plus therapist with ulterior motive.
Tumblr media
Limetown - everyone in a research town vanishes, 15 years later, reporter investigates
Tumblr media
Archive 81 - haunted creepy thing and tapes
Tumblr media
Ars Paradoxica - scientist lady from somewhere in the future 20somethings gets thrown back into 1943...
Tumblr media
Remarkable Providences - looking in depth into the Salem witch trials and what actually caused them.
Tumblr media
Blackwood Podcast - good but there doesn’t seem to be any sign of a second season, and I felt like there should have been one, so bear that in mind.
Tumblr media
Supernatural Sexuality with Dr. Seabrooke - what it says on the tin
Tumblr media
Scared to Death - couple relates scary stories sent into them by people. I didn’t mean to get unnerved but they did it without me realizing. Thumbs up!
Tumblr media
Tentacles - this seems to be a oneshot done by horror babble from a fictional podcast, but I really loved it so here it is.
Tumblr media
A story time, death positive, informative podcast. Quite fun.
Tumblr media
A man has lost his cat
Tumblr media
The Bridge - a bridge spanning the ocean, mysterious things, a tower, a flower enthusiast...
Tumblr media
Full Body Chills - creepy/scary stories (some misses I’ll admit, but others are quite good)
Tumblr media
Station Blue - Summer in Antarctica, but scary (not very far in but I’ll admit I’m hooked)
Tumblr media
OSP Podcast - first part has them discussing behind the scenes stuff and whatnot on their previous youtube episodes, then they do a q & a (that usually hilariously goes off the rails but is always fun)
Tumblr media
King Falls A.M.

❤️ (favorite romantic relationship) and 🥉(three podcasts you would recommend to get someone into podcasts) for the ask game!
❤️ (favorite romantic relationship): sayer/hale <3 idk just something cute and fucked up about a horror story about a murder ai whose only feelings are anger and annoyance growing Fond of its human test subject and vessel because of the mortifying ordeal of having to Depend on another person and seeing oneself in the other Honorable mention to arthur/john from malevolent podcast for the same reasons. those reasons being the inherent homoeroticism of sharing one's body with another man
🥉(three podcasts you would recommend to get someone into podcasts) : my basis for recommending shows to ppl new to podcasting is that they gotta be short, both in minutes per ep, and number of eps so it won't be intimidating; the story be relatively straightforward and easy to follow; and that the voices are distinct/there aren't too many of em in a pod 1. Mina's story: cuz the whole thing is so short like u can literally finish it in less than half an hour and it will make you Feel so much. it's a good introduction to the epistolary/audio diary format so common to pods. it exemplifies how for most pods, the plot is emotional continuity. like, the story begins with the mc not wanting to face the present and let herself love cuz of grief so she escapes into the future. where she ends up in a safe space where she feels comfortable letting herself love again ;-; also i think like if you're first getting into pods, you'll be surprised at how casually queer they are and i think this pod is a good intro to that 2. Supernatural Sexuality with Dr. Seabrooke: the fictional radio advice format is easy to follow for ppl new into pods cuz those are a real thing. but the callers being monsters is enough of a twist to distinguish it from those irl radio shows/nonfiction. the short stand alone eps are easy to jump straight into. and it's just very sincere and wholesome and queer in a way i don't see as much in other media. Also, everything i said abt this show is also equally applicable to monstrous agonies 3. Spines: good intro to how podcasts tend to do horror cuz the spooks is more from really good vibes and a sense of aesthetics and making the listener imagine indescribable things, rather than just jumpscares and scary murder monsters and ghouls trying to kill. also, the queer love story, the themes of community, and the really hopeful ending, exemplify how horror pods are very good at balancing dark dreary settings with hope and optimism

Rusty Quill Saga - 24 Hour Follow Up
Hi everyone! I appreciate all the new follows! Might actually get me posting more about stuff!
So, it's been about a day since I posted my response to the Rusty Quill article, and reading some of the tag comments I wanted to respond to a couple, again in the interests of helping those who aren't within the audio fiction community get a little context that you might not otherwise have had.
But I also wanted to put my cards on the table - why should you listen to me? Hi! My name is Lee Davis-Thalbourne, I'm Australian, and I'm one half of the Fiction Podcast Production team Passer Vulpes Productions. We're the creators of a number of fiction podcasts, including Love and Luck and Supernatural Sexuality with Dr. Seabrooke. I also have a reasonable resume of small VA roles with a lot of different podcast production teams, I have a history of theorycrafting around podcast production, and I'm currently engaged in some part-time independent research around fiction podcast production that, if people are interested, I might actually get around to finishing one day. Myself and my partner Erin were the founders of AusFicPodMakers, which was/is an informal group supporting audio fiction producers in Australia, and as part of that support, I currently curate a list of Australian Fiction Podcasts (which I encourage you to take a look at!). In terms of affiliations, PVP is not associated with any podcasting network (though a few have knocked on our door), and I'm not currently producing audio fiction right now - I have no projects on the boil, so to speak.
So, I think I can say, with some evidence, that I'm a part of the audio fiction production scene, that I care about audio fiction in general, that I might have some thoughts worth listening to about it, and that I'm a mostly disinterested party regarding this - I have no particular stake in Rusty Quill's fortunes one way or the other.
Tag Responses
Okay, so I wanted to quickly respond to a few of the tag comments that have popped up in response to yesterday's post, mainly because I feel like it's worth expanding on some of them:
#i also feel bad because i was always kinda wary on tma2#now it feels even more like a cash grab
Look - as a podcast producer, I can respect a cash grab. If you can grab that cash, I'm a strong believer in doing so, because making audio fiction without cash is kinda sucky. It's like any other big endeavour - when you get nothing out of it, it eats away at you. That's part of the reason why PVP isn't producing at the moment - We tried to scale up to multiple productions and it damn near killed us. We weren't really getting the income we needed to do more than just barely break even - we, as producers, weren't making a dime off of our podcasts, even with Patreon and crowdfunding. Rusty Quill is actually an extreme outlier regarding their ability to get cash from their audiences. How extreme? Well, before the TMA2 kickstarter, the most successful Audio Fiction crowdfunding campaign was Unseen, from the producers of Wolf 359, one of the seminal audio fiction shows of the modern audio fiction renaissance, and it hit a little over US$40,000. Which, just to note, was significantly higher than any other audio fiction crowdfund project before it - very few audio fiction crowdfund campaigns get more than around US$5,000-10,000.
So, sure, it's a cash grab. It might still be good anyway though! Don't disregard it just because they're making financially-dominated decisions.
#Adding onto this while the evidence isn't conclusive (because as many people have said it is conjecture and opinions and stuff)#and also the author's credibility is...in question
So, first things first, Newt Schottelkotte is an extremely credible journalist in the Audio Fiction space - they've broken a number of big stories, and written a lot in support of the audio fiction production scene. Wil Williams, who helped edit the piece, is also a highly respected critic and journalist within the space, while Tal Minear is a very prolific audio fiction producer of good repute. Personally, I have absolutely no concerns about their integrity or credibility - they've all done incredible work.
But it is worth noting that Audio fiction is kinda odd, in that journalists, critics and producers all pretty much come from the same group of people. The honest fact is that Audio Fiction, as a beat, has pretty much no prestige, there are (currently) no publications that are dedicated to audio fiction coverage, and the whole sector is mostly considered an afterthought to the real podcast industry. So, the few people who do create audio fiction meta-content, even if they begin as separated from the industry, don't stay separated for long - they will start making contacts with producers, they may start finding people offering cameo roles in shows, and eventually, they'll consider moving into podcast production. If your requirement for a "credible" voice within audio fiction journalism is one that has absolutely no connections with any actual production, I'm sorry but that ain't happening - the scene is too small, and people move between production and commentary so often, that "true independence" isn't a thing.
With that said, these journalists do a lot to make their affiliations visible up front, which is the other way to manage conflicts of interest within the scene - by declaring them. I'd be a lot more suspicious of a journalist that doesn't put their affiliations up front, honestly.
The Rusty Quill Response
So, I wrote yesterday that I wasn't expecting a response from Rusty Quill for a good three days - they are a group, it takes time to coordinate a response, I figured I could relax for a bit. However, Rusty Quill has already produced a response, and that alone says something - it says that a single person has dictated this response. Considering the record speed, I also doubt that it has been looked over by anyone else. Knowing these things, I find it very likely that this is Alex Newall's response specifically, speaking for Rusty Quill, rather than one that that the leadership at Rusty Quill has worked on together.
I'm not going to go through the whole thing point by point - I don't have the time, and this post is already too long for most Tumblrites to consider going through it. But on a more general level, I find it interesting that the response contains not a single link, not a single pointer towards contrary evidence. Almost certainly this is due to the timeframe - were I in RQ's position, I would be going through our paperwork to find some boilerplate contracts to provide some counter-evidence to the article, or providing some financial details to show where the money is going, but finding, redacting, and publishing these things takes time. RQ has done none of this, and this isn't necessarily a point against them, but it does mean that Rusty Quill hasn't done much more than shout "Am not!" into the audience.
To talk about one specific point, I also find it interesting that, having been attacked on the subject of crew pay rates, they talk about how their cast have very good pay rates. This might be true, I don't have the resources to fact check that, and I hope it is - actors do deserve pay. But it is worth noting that actors are on a production for very little of the time - it's the editors, sound designers, musicians, transcribers, etc who put the most time on to a production. In general, you'd expect that the crew would be getting more money than the cast, because the crew is going to be putting in more time (although, fair's fair, the vast majority of audio fiction out there doesn't do this, because the only "crew" is the producer, who is usually financing the production out of their own pocket).
Questions?
So, I figure that if I'm putting myself out there, I might as well offer the opportunity for people to pick my brain. Have a question about Audio fiction production? Want to hear my explicit comments about something someone has said? My asks are open, I'll do my best to come back and answer any asks that come my way.

A List of Podcasts You’ve Probably Haven’t Heard
FYes there are a million podcast rec lists out there already but here’s a list of podcasts that you’ve probably never heard of that truly do not get the attention they deserve.
Compelled Dual:
A 2 play co-DM’d DnD podcast following Leoril and Phirora Valcyne as they each try to inherit the throne from their dick father. The DMs Al and Barry are master story tellers who’s unconventional system works seamlessly with the story. It is a story of political intrigue, mystery, adventure, and finding the true meaning of family. It is also packed to the teeth with LGBT+ characters and if you’re like me and crave quality shows with good representation this is the show for you. If you like The Adventure Zone or Critical Role you will love this show. It is currently in it’s final season of their first campaign and it updates every Friday.
Supernatural Sexuality with Dr. Seabrooke
This show is a relationship advice radio show set in a fictional world where mystical creatures and monsters exist. The characters may be monsters but their problems have real world connotations to them and very usable advice to take to heart. This show is also sex worker positive! And shows said sex workers in healthy relationships and the advice they receive isn’t about telling them to stop being a sex worker! Regardless of your current relationship status there is likely something here you will be able to relate too. This show currently has 12 episodes and is currently on an extended hiatus. Also the content of the show can obviously go into NSFW territory and so use discretion.
Love and Luck
An audio drama between two men living in Melbourne, Australia falling in love and finding they’ve developed magical powers to change the mood and luck of those around them. This show also has the unique aspect of being told completely through the voice messages they leave for each other. I’ll be real with you. If you’re one of those people that likes those coffee shop/flower shop/tattoo shop AU fanfics, you’ll love this show. This show is just a warm cup of coffee on a rainy day levels of soothing. It does tackle homophobia and transphobic behavior including topics such as parents kicking their children out and queer bashing so use caution but those episodes are always prefaced with content warnings so take care. Each episode is very short with the longest episode topping out at about 15 minutes so it is easy to binge through the 101 episodes. It is currently also on hiatus due to COVID so no new episodes are currently forthcoming yet.
Light Hearts
Follow the optimistic Janine as she does her best to run a café that is unfortunately haunted. You’ll see as she does her best to not only cater to the needs of her customers, but her paranormal roommates with the help of the colorful friends she makes along the way. This show is just light hearted fun at its finest and is tragically short with only 4 full episodes and a few minisodes and is also on a COVID based hiatus. Still worth the listen in my opinion though!
The Two Princes
Follow Prince Rupert as he struggles through an enchanted forest to find a way to save his kingdom from its viney grasp. He will find not all is not as it seams as he encounters another Prince by the name of Amir who seams to know more about the forests origins and what must be done save both their kingdoms. A show of adventure, romance, and mystery that can’t be missed. The show reached its series finale in 2020 but with 3 seasons worth of content it will have plenty to keep you entertained for a while.
Caravan
Follow Samir who accidentally falls into a mysterious canyon while on a camping trip with his best friend. The canyon is filled with demons, vampires, ghosts, and all other forms of monsters all fighting for control. Listen along as Samir must join with the humans who have come to call this crazy place home to help him find his way back to his. The best way to describe this is a western meets fantasy in the best way possible. I will say this show gets into NSFW territory and just about every character has no problem talking about how DTF they are for monsters and does have an instant of in scene sex so be aware.
Foundation After Midnight Radio
This is a radio show set in the SCP universe that brings the news and announcements of all SCP facilities to all foundation personnel. It is very much Welcome to Nightvale meets SCP in the way. The announcer DJ Scip has a hilarious delivery and brings the fun to the SCP universe. If you like other SCP fan content like Containment series on Youtube you will love this show. It is the SCP universe though so horror and reality bending events are going to happen so if that is not your cup of tea skip it.
The Mistholme Museum of Mystery Morbidity and Mortality
Listen to this helpful and friendly tour guide as it leads you through the strange and mysterious exhibits of this equally strange and mysterious museum. This show is like SCP if the SCP Foundation was actually good at their job of containing their subjects. The show balances its humor and horror perfectly and by the end you too will also want your own Guide. The show is currently ongoing with its fourth season so there is plenty of content!
The White Vault
Follow a repair team sent to Outpost Fristed in the middle of the wastes outside Svalbard. They quickly become snowed in by a terrible storm and come to find there are mysteries and horrors waiting for them beneath the ice. I’m gonna warn you now that this is a horror show that has no qualms killing characters so be forewarned if that’s not your thing. But if you are someone who likes a good horror story to keep you up at night then this is the show for you. The mystery will haunt you worse than the monsters and know that the show writers are not going to just give you any explanation of what or why things are happening the way they are. There is an eldritch horror to this that does not directly use any preexisting lore so you will likely leave with more questions than answers and  looming dread to both wanting to understand and knowing that the truth may be worse to know. The show is five seasons long with bonus content available for purchase on their website. While the bonus content does have some valuable pieces of world building lore and some character set ups they are not necessary  to enjoy the main story.
Spines
Wren wakes up suffering from memory loss, covered in blood, and surrounded in the remains of what looks to be some form of ritual. The only sources to he past are the fleeting names and faces of those who fled when she awoke. Follow her as she hunts them down to find out who she is, what happened to her, and how she can stop anyone from doing it again to anyone else. This show is a horror mystery that is engaging to follow and has a mystery that follows through with bringing more questions forward as old ones get answered. The horror does rely on a lot of body horror so use caution if that’s not your thing. But if you like a well written horror with ambiguous endings this is a good show to give a listen too.

Dear Magisowo, I figure your team doesn't normally give romantic advice, but considering that I'm a magical creature myself (and she's a nature spirit), I feel like your team would understand this best. I'm a 23 year old werecreature, but I don't transform into any sort of recognizable animal. I think the best way for me to put it is that I look like a cross between a snake, a dragon(although my wings are more like a dragonfly's), and a marigold. I've been told my were-form is rather ugly, and I have to admit, they're not wrong. Recently, I met a tree spirit, whom I have fallen in love with. I want to tell her my feelings somehow, but I have no idea how to do it. Should I come in my human form or my were-creature form? Do I bring a gift, and if so, what do I bring? I would appreciate any help I can get. Sincerely, Lost in the Woods of Love
Tumblr media
Dear Lost in the Woods of Love,
The best advice we can give you is to follow what you are comfortable with in this situation. For many people with multiple physical shapes, like yourself, it can be a big thing to choose a form for certain situations. It's a completely natural thing to be a bit stressed about. But you are the only one that can decide what is best.
The same goes for the actual matter of confessing your feelings. Do what feels natural and what you think your prospective partner would be comfortable with. There isn't a creature in the world who has all this figured out. Even if you blunder a bit, you'll have a chance to correct yourself, don't worry.
Like you said, this isn't quite our area of expertise. For a true expert’s insight on healthy (supernatural) relationships, we’d like to refer you to our Australian colleague Dr Olivia Seabrooke, who hosts the advice show Supernatural Sexuality.
We wish you all the best,
~ the MagiSoWo Team

Hey! Do you have any story podcast recs that aren't too horror-centric? I'm looking for some new ones to dive into but I am a huge baby 😔
OH BOY DO I!
- girl in space (my favourite! scifi abt a girl just tryin to Live Her Life on a falling apart spaceship - all alone, until she isn't) - the strange case of starship iris (found family be gay do crime IN SPACE) - tides (more science-heavy scifi, abt a biologist trapped on an ocean alien planet just tryin to survive. generally chill and contemplative) - caravan (weird west adventure abt a guy who stumbles into a hidden world, a canyon inhabited by demons/vampires/banshees and all sorts of other monsters. warning: horny) - the 12:37 (scifi w mystery elements, abt a woman who accidentally boards a time-travelling train!) - supernatural sexuality with dr. seabrooke (fake radio show with dating&relationship advice for monsters/supernatural beings/cryptids! might be occasionally nsfw? cant remember. v insightful and heartwarming) - this planet needs a name (scifi abt ppl establishing a colony on an alien world, really sweet and hopeful, found family vibes) - startripper!! (another feel-good scifi, abt an alien who quits his shitty office job and goes adventuring around the galaxy instead) - arden (fictional true crime comedy loosely inspired by shakespeare plays!)
some others with occasional creepiness but generally not horror: - the bridge (v atmospheric, abt the employees of a watchtower on a mostly abandoned bridge spanning the entire atlantic ocean, telling stories abt the many weird things that happen there. kickass soundtrack) - superstition (supernatural mystery abt a bi jewish private eye investigating the disappearance of her parents and other spooky stuff in the town of superstition, arizona. my all time fav podcast protagonist) - zoo (x-files but with cryptids instead of aliens and if mulder&scully were one disaster lesbian trying her best. warning: this one had to be left unfinished by the creators, so season 2 ends abruptly and leaves a lot of loose ends, but season 1 works well as a standalone nonetheless!)
