This was supposed to just be a rough sketch, but then I started getting really invested in it.
I hadn't initially intended to include so many picture book characters, but the nostalgia was overwhelming. Does anyone remember the animated short films produced by Weston Woods? My local library used to have a bunch of them on the Scholastic VHS tapes from the late 90s. (I know some shorts were released on the Children's Circle VHS tapes back in the 80s (🎶 Come on along! Come on along! Join the caravan!), and some were packaged in Sammy's Story Shop in 2008.)
Characters:
Max, from Where the Wild Things Are, written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak

Pooh and Piglet, from the Winnie-the-Pooh books, by A. A. Milne, illustrated by E. H. Shepard
Owen, from Owen, written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes.
Mouse, from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, by Laura Joffe Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond
Louis, from The Trumpet of the Swan, by E. B. White
Mr. Toad, from The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame, based on the illustrations by E. H. Shepard
Mr. Tumnus, from The Chronicles of Narnia series, by C. S. Lewis
Pippi and Mr. Nilsson, from the Pippi Longstocking books, by Astrid Lindgren

Mid-Year Book Freakout 2023
Nobody tagged me (I think :D )
1. Best book you’ve read so far this year.
Without a single second thought it has to be The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel. i desribed it as soul-crushing and it really was. But also brillantly thought through, written and paced. Also very heavy in regards so physical and mental trauma, so I absolutely recommend it but steel yourself.
2.  Best sequel you’ve read so far this year
I have read a bunch of sequels, and while chronologically story-wise The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman was a prequel, it was published long after the first book in the series, so I am going to count it.
3. New release you haven’t read yet
Again, I have a bunch, so randomly let´s say The Bleeding Tree by Hollie Starling, Atalanta by Jennifer Saint and Gwen and Art are not in Love by lex Croucher.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
Most of my anticipated 2023 books are already out and since the bookdepository shut down I have trouble keeping up with new releases that are not on every Youtubers lists, but I am looking forward to The Winter Spirits: Twelve Ghostly Tales for Festive Nights.
5. Biggest disappointment
There were several books which I rated low, but in terms of me having really high hopes for and being let down, the winner is Stone Blind. I love and adore natalie Haynes previous greek myth retellings, but this one was just all over the place and none of those places were good.
6. Biggest surprise
For some reason I thought I would be bored by Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Ried simply because nothing about the setting enticed me. And yet here we are throwing 5 stars at a book.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)
Mary Doria Russel. Yeah. the Sparrow is really..... something. And then I read one more of her books and also thought it really good.
8. Newest fictional crush/newest favorite character
I am going to say Francie Nolan because I really want to show my love for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
9. Book that made you cry
T-H-E-S-P-A-R-R-O-W .
Honourable shoutout to The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead which made me teary-eyed.
10. Book that made you happy
Looking at my reading I apparently decided to be mostly miserable while reading this year. So let´s, once more, mention the beauty of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I felt happy when I was reading that one.

WWW Wednesday
1. What are you currently reading?
I just started Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I saw the movie The Martian, but I've never read the book, so this is a first for this author.
I've started Sweet Like Jasmine by Bonnie Gray for my "facebook friend recommendation." It's a short book, only 250 pages, and it's exceedingly Christian and Christian self help and I think it's going to be a slog.
I'm still listening to The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susanna Clarke. I'm about 2/3 of the way through it and I love it.
2. What have you recently finished reading?
The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher - this one started out really great. It was definitely more fantasy based than horror, but the beginning was really creepy. I loved the characters, especially. But then there were chapters of a copied manuscript (apparently it was a short story by Lovecraft) in the middle and it started to drag. Rather disappointing.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarrow. I managed to get over the hump of unbelievability and enjoyed the rest of the story. It is not high literature and it's trope-y but in a good way. The spice was just right too. Iron Flame has a really long waitlist, but the audiobook is available so I might be listening to that next.
The Magical Language of Others by EJ Koh. NPR did a write up on her debut novel, but it wasn't available at the library, so I looked at her other books and this one fit in with my unofficial theme of "Asian women write about their complex relationships with their mothers" of 2023. It was a quick read but I found the writing to be confusing in places and lacking in emotional growth.
Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood. Have I been avoiding reading Ali Hazelwood’a novels because she wrote Reylo fanfic even though they are about smart nerdy women? Yes. But this one came available at the library and I was in the mood for something light and I found it charming and nerdy and engaging. Even though Nolan Sawyer is just Adam Driver by another name. I do have to protest with it being labeled as Young Adult. The protagonist has graduated high school and her love interest in a few years older. It’s definitely more of a new adult novel.
3. What will you be reading next?
Well a bunch of books all came available at the library at the same time, so I'm shifting around a little.
Part of Your World by Abby Jimenz. My friend has highly recommended these books and the main character is a doctor. Will I finally find my goldilocks of a medical romance?
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. I really loved the first books of the trilogy so I'm excited.
Mister Magic by Kiersten White. I heard that she wrote this book as a way for her to process leaving the LDS church, so of course, that got me interested.
Know My Name by Chantel Miller. Book club book.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - still on the list. I've managed to avoid spoilers from the movie so far.

'Cillian Murphy was spotted wheeling his suitcase out of his hotel in Paris after the premiere of his new film Oppenheimer on Tuesday night.
The actor, 42, looked fresh as he donned a simple navy T-shit and black trousers as he departed the city, hiding behind a pair of dark shades.
His co-stars from the film, which has so far received rave reviews, were also pictured departing the French capital following the promotional event.
Emily Blunt cut a casual figure in a floral button-up, shirt-style jumpsuit covered in pink lilies.
Sporting a pair of round pink shades, she paired the outfit with white trainers as she slung her bag over her shoulder and headed from her hotel.
It seems the film was a raging success and critics are absolutely swooning over the biopic about the scientist known as the 'father of the atomic bomb'.
Journalists have taken to Twitter to share their glowing reviews of the movie, with one critic describing how the film 'split my brain open' and 'left me sobbing through the end credits'
Their co-star Robert Downey Jr was also spotted in a somewhat eclectic outfit choice as he left the French capital with multiple bags swung over his shoulders.
Clashing colours together, the actor wore a teal green pair of trousers with a khaki sweatshirt jacket, navy baseball cap and neon orange bag.
Disguising his appearance, the 58-year-old hid behind his shades, cap and face mask as he made his way through the city.
Also donning shades, Matt Damon left Paris with his family in a casual black t-shirt and navy trousers as he walked with his daughters.
His family were gathered to support their dad at his latest premiere as they stunned in glamorous family shots.
Last night the four stars joined their fellow cast members at the Cinema Le Grand Rex to celebrate their hotly-anticipated biopic.
Emily looked glamorous as ever as she cut an elegant figure in a green satin gown with padded shoulders and a collared neckline as she made sure to capture attention.
She added a few extra inches to her frame with a pair of silver pointed stilettos and accessorised with droplet Anita Ko earrings.
The Mary Poppins star, who is playing physicist Oppenheimer's wife Kitty in the biological thriller, styled her golden locks in glamorous waves.
She accentuated her striking features with lashings of mascara and a touch of pink lipstick as she posed for the cameras.
Meanwhile, Irish actor Cillian cut a suave figure in a navy suit, made up of smart trousers and a fitted blazer.
He styled his smart ensemble with a beige shirt and a matching tie, while he completed the look with patent black boots.
The Peaky Blinders star styled his dark locks in a middle parting as he smiled for photographs alongside his A-list co-stars.
Cillian is playing Dr J. Robert Oppenheimer, the 'father of the atomic bomb', in the £81million blockbuster directed by Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer was the director of the laboratory which designed the atomic bomb during World War Two as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project.
The film is being adapted from the 2006 book American Prometheus: The Triumph And Tragedy Of J. Robert Oppenheimer, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
The book, which won the Pulitzer Prize, details Oppenheimer's personal life and his time leading the Manhattan Project in the early and mid-1940s.
The film is set to be released on July 21 and a whole host of the A-list cast flocked to Paris to celebrate its release on Tuesday.
Also in attendance at the premiere was Matt Damon, who is starring as Lieutenant General Leslie Groves - an engineer who directed the Manhattan Project.
Matt, 52, cut a dapper figure in a navy blue suit, which he styled with a plain white T-shirt and brown boots.
He slicked back his silver locks and appeared to be in jovial spirits as he smiled and waved at photographers.
Matt was also sweetly supported by his daughters Isabella, 17, Gia, 14, and Stella, 12 - who he shares with Luciana Barroso.
Luciana's daughter Alexia, 24, from her former relationship with Arbello Barroso - who Matt adopted, also smiled for group snaps with her sisters.
Robert Downey Jr also looked as dapper as ever in a dark blue suit, which he teamed with a matching satin tie and black shoes.
The Hollywood star, 58, sported a pair of square black tinted glasses and appeared in good form as he playfully posed for the cameras.
He is portraying Lewis Strauss, who served two terms on the US Atomic Energy Commission.
The cast is also made up of Florence Pugh - who plays Oppenheimer's mistress - Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and Josh Hartnett.
Gary Oldman is also said to have a cameo in the epic as President Truman.
Truman met Oppenheimer after the bombs were used in 1945, killing 200,000 people, and the scientist said that he felt he had blood on his hands.
Truman had little use for such pangs of conscience and dismissed him as a 'crybaby scientist'.
The cast have been busy promoting the film together over the past few weeks and Robert Downey Jr - who plays Lewis Strauss - recently shared a snap of them all.
He posted the picture of himself with Matt, Cillian, Emily and John Krasinski, and even hinted at a possible cameo from Emily's husband.
'Linking up with my Oppenheimer cast mates...wait, is that a Krasinski photo bomb or might there be a surprise cameo???' he captioned a photo shared to his Instagram on Sunday.'

Sneak peek time again!!!
Tumblr media
We earn the M rating with this chapter, y’all as is evident by this peek!!! But a heck of a lot more happens this week and I can’t wait to share this chapter with you!!
If you need to catch up, last week’s chapter is here, from the beginning is here, and the rest of the series is here. Thank you all for your love and support of this fic! I am continually humbled and ecstatic by your enthusiasm!!! 😘
Fic Summary: International spy David Nolan is tired.
When his mentor dies unexpectedly, he is drawn back into a world he wanted to leave behind, courtesy of a quarter million dollars and a beautiful woman. Dr. Mary Margaret Blanchard is too much of everything- too smart, too gutsy, too alluring, and too naive to survive on her own.
Now, with the risk of world-wide nuclear war on the line, David has little choice in the matter. If he can just remember that the gorgeous raven haired doctor is a means to an end and nothing more, he'll have it made.
Tagging the usuals. Please let me know if you’d like to be added or removed.

Color flooded her cheeks, but her gaze remained steady. “I don’t expect pretty words from you.”
“That’s good, because I don’t have any.” She stood in front of him, the scent of her rolling over him and it was all he could do not to haul her to him and claim her. “A one-night stroll through paradise isn’t your style, Snow. You’re the permanent kind. If I ever want a house in a nice neighborhood, I’ll give you a call. Otherwise, you’re just not my type.”
It was, as he intended, a solid slap in the face. She met his eyes, her own narrowing slightly, until a small smile tilted the corner of her lips. He couldn’t help but think that he might be in trouble.
He glanced down at where her hands were busy unbuttoning her blouse and choked on nothing.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“Proving you wrong.” She finished with the blouse and let it slide to the floor before reaching behind her and working the clasp on her skirt.
“Stop, Snow.” His mouth was dry as the skirt joined the blouse on the floor. “Dammit, put your clothes back on and get out of here.” The underwear she wore was a rose tinged ivory that only made her skin look more pale.
“Nervous?” she asked.
“I’m not in the mood for one of your experiments,” he grit out. His hands remained at his sides- he was quite proud of his self-control- but he couldn’t look away.
“Hmmm, nervous, definitely.” She tossed her hair back, exposing a long line of her throat and David’s knees felt weak.
“You’re making a mistake.” He tried again to argue with her, but his resistance was fading with the sunlight.
She acknowledged his statement with a small nod. “That’s a definite possibility. But, it’ll be mine, won’t it?”
The sun was gone and the room was shrouded in shadows, and yet, there was a glow about her that made him think of fairies dancing in a forest clearing. Her skin beckoned him, but he refused to give in.
“I’m not going to touch you.”
Mary Margaret glanced at his hands clutched at his sides, the slight tremble that told her his control was on the edge of a knife. It was all she needed to shore up her confidence.
“Alright,” she said, “I’ll touch you.” Her experience with men wasn’t non-existent, but it was limited by a strict upbringing and a demanding career. Relying on instinct and need, she ran her hands up his clothed chest. With her eyes on his, she enjoyed the feel of firm muscle underneath her fingers.
She had to rise up on her toes to reach his mouth, and when she did, he held himself as still as a statue, tense as if he expected a blow. A slight brush of his fingers along her sides brought him back to himself and made her smile against his lips. He couldn’t allow himself to touch her, so he gripped the edge of the dresser behind him. He thought he knew her well enough to be sure a lack of response on his part would humiliate her enough to leave him alone. To keep her safe. From him. What he didn’t count on, was that she understood him, as well.
As her lips toyed with his, she went to work unbuttoning his shirt so her fingers could roam freely over his naked flesh. He could feel his heart drumming in his chest as she hummed her approval.
“I want you, David.” Her lips trailed from his lips to his chin then his throat. “I have since I met you. I tried not to.” She exhaled shakily and wrapped her arms around his waist, laying her head on his chest. “Make love with me.”
He put his hands on her shoulders to push her back. He knew if she kissed him again, there would be no chance of escape. For either of them.
“This isn’t a game you can win, Snow.” His voice was thick with desire, the words burning in his throat. “Back off, before it’s too late.”
“You said you believed in destiny,” she reminded him. “Don’t you recognize me, David? I’m yours.”
Perhaps it was that and that alone he feared most. She was as inescapable as fate, as elusive as dreams. And now, just now, she was wrapped around him like a promise.
“Then I’m yours. God help you.”
He lowered his mouth to hers with all the fire, all the force, all the fury that he’d held back. He’d wanted to save her, and himself. Now it was up to fate, and luck. Whatever promises he’d made, he’d break. Tonight, he would touch her, would have his fill of her. Tomorrow would take care of itself.
