Update: Kung Pow Penis
We at the TACM are pleased to update the conservation status of Kung Pow Penis to Near Threatened. Previously, we classified this predatory meme as Threatened due to loss of habitat when the specific tumblr user it primarily preyed upon left the ecosystem. The meme continued for a time subsisting on other fascist, reactionary, incel, or TERF posts, protecting the tumblr ecosystem from these threats. In recent months, Kung Pow Penis has flourished and grown greatly in population as it expands its predatory capabilities. The meme's new sources of sustenance include the posts of people who are weirdly puritanical about sex, homophobes arguing about kink at pride, and similar prey.
This new ecological niche makes Kung Pow Penis and ideal candidate for memetoremediation, a process by which memes can remove toxic elements from the ecosystem.
Given the increasing prevalence of these attitudes in the environment both on tumblr and elsewhere, we believe that it is likely the population of Kung Pow Penis will make a full recovery to Least Concern.

I am curious what percentage of the population fits Jacopo-Belbo's definition of a functional adult (or, at least, the part of their definition they communicate in that post).
Jacopo-Belbo's declared standard for functional adulthood, in case you don't want to click the link (I'm not reblogging their post or tagging them on this because I judge it likely they'd be annoyed by that):
Re: ongoing first aid kit discourse, if you don’t have the following you’re not a functional adult: in-person Stop The Bleed training (USA, I don’t know about equivalent training in other countries, Google is free, stop asking me), NAR combat application tourniquets, Celox z-fold gauze, TacMed OLAES pressure dressing, NAR chest seals, and an annoying little bag to carry it all around in.
My offhand guess is that most people are not "functional adults" by this standard, so "if you don’t have the following you’re not a functional adult" here is roughly equivalent to "if you're a good person you wouldn't eat meat"; you can't really prove it wrong because of the inherent subjectivity of moral statements, but you can correctly point out that it's detached from the material conditions and normal standards of the society it was made in (and the person who made it probably knows that, and the statement reflects their belief in the superiority of their own standards over the normative ones of their society) and that lots of people who aren't "functional adults" by Jacopo-Belbo's definition are functional in the sense that they're getting by.
I don't actually have much data to back up that guess though, just some observations and inferences from my own experiences. So I decided to take advantage of Tumblr's new poll function to make a little calibration test of my intuitions. Also, that post does seem to have a lot of notes, and I'm curious how much of that is full agreement vs. reblogging to spread around the links and partial agreement but not fully endorsing it, and I think this poll might give me some sense of the probable rough breakdown of that.
I know Tumblr polls can be pretty unrepresentative because of social network effects, but I think this matter is probably going to be pretty orthogonal to the ways people who read my blog are likely to be unrepresentative of the general population.
Of course, one possible biasing factor is the post this is responding to stigmatizes not having this sort of preparation, and my poll question reproduces their framing for brevity. If it helps, a quick Google search says votes in Tumblr polls are anonymous, so you need not worry about being embarrassed, and you are completely free to reject Jacopo-Belbo's moral judgment about what answering "no" would say about you as a person (your thoughts are your own, after all). I'm not particularly interested in having a discussion about the reasonableness of their standards (which is why I haven't given my "take" on that question here), but I will note that at least in the richer and more stable countries nowadays most people will never have to treat a serious wound without assistance from medical professionals and this sort of wound-care training and supplies is one of those things where you'll probably never use it, but it's better to have it and not need it than to encounter a situation where you need it and don't have it. I'll also note that I suspect that post has an element of staking out a maximal position in response to maximal positions in the opposite direction (original discussion is here, here, and here if anyone wants to review it, I confess I have not done so because... well, look at the note count on the first one) and I'm not sure whether it's fully unironically endorsed by its own maker (the last criteria seems a little tongue-in-cheek).
Please note that I do not intend this post as an incitement to send internet hate mail to anyone; if you disagree with one of the participants in the linked threads and want to express your disagreement directly to them that's your right, but, like, I'm not encouraging that and if I wanted to start an argument with someone here I'd have reblogged or @ them. You do have my permission and encouragement to reblog this post to increase the sample size of my poll, though I'd prefer if this didn't get spread around too much.
I might pin this to the top of my Tumblr for a little while, to increase my sample size.
I think I forgot to switch the poll duration from 1 day to 1 week in my previous version of this post and I can't edit the poll once I've posted it, so I deleted and reposted with a 1 week limit. Sorry! However, @aurpiment already responded to my first version of this post, so I preserve their reply here:
Oh that’s my mutual! They were using hyperbolic language in frustration with another post on which there was discourseabout whether it’s reasonable to expect a household to have a first aid kit. Some people on that post thought first aid in general was unnecessary. I think you’re rather focused on the functional adult terminology. The spirit of their post is “of course you should know basic first aid, are you kidding me? It saves lives. It’s embarrassing to say first aid isn’t important. Go learn first aid for serious physical trauma.”

Repost from Operational Medicine on Facebook:
Hypovolemic Shock. Shock is defined as the inability to perfuse the tissues. This is often (but not always) a result of dropping cardiac output. Cardiac output is the volume of the left ventricle (stroke volume) multiplied by the number of times the ventricle pushes blood out each minute (heart rate) [CO = SV x HR] 💓 Failure to maintain a normal CO of 4-8L/min will result in lower blood pressure, impaired cellular metabolism, organ failure, and death. 💔
Hypovolemic shock is caused by a significant loss of circulating blood volume. This can be caused by bleeding, fluid shifts from burns, sweating, excessive urination caused by disease or medication, or persistent diarrhea. 💩 You generally need to lose about 15% of your intravascular volume to start your compensatory mechanism. 😷
Your body has two means of bringing CO back up: 1. increase heart rate and forcefulness of heart contractions, and 2. increase circulating volume. 1. As CO decreases your adrenal glands release a surge of catecholamines, hormones such as dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine (sympathoadrenal activation). 💉 These hormones not only cause the heart to beat faster and harder, but they constrict peripheral blood vessels increasing systemic vascular resistance (SVR). 💪 2. Fluid shifts from the interstitial space into the vascular space. The liver and spleen disgorge plasma and young red blood cells. The kidneys release aldosterone which causes retention of sodium (and thus water). 💧 The pituitary gland releases Vasopressin, also called antidiuretic hormone or ADH, which causes water to be reabsorbed into the blood from the kidneys. Vasopressin also helps increase SVR by constricting blood vessels.
However, if fluid loss continues the body’s compensatory mechanism will be overwhelmed resulting in CO continuing to drop. Systemic pressures continue to decline which impairs the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues of the body. Without oxygen and nutrients, cellular metabolism becomes anaerobic resulting in lactic acidosis and electrolyte abnormalities.
Treatment involves stopping the source of volume loss. Repletion of the fluids lost with attention paid to the type of fluid. If shock resulted from hemorrhage, whole blood should be used for volume replacement. Hypothermia and coagulopathies commonly complicate the treatment of hypovolemic shock. If tissue perfusion isn’t restored quickly, systemic inflammation and multiple organ failure are likely. Even if the patient survives, they may experience a life of immunocompromise and low-level organ dysfunction.

Pretty cool to wake up and see your kid and you on @northamericanrescue helping spread important information. #Repost @northamericanrescue with @get_repost ・・・ Just the facts... Great post from @fisherad1 !!! “ New study on pediatric tourniquet use. They enrolled 13 children ages 2 to 7 years old (mean 4.2 years). The tourniquets (CAT) were applied to 11 upper extremities and 13 lower extremities and had 100% occlusion. Additionally, they had 7 preschool children and tested in 12 limbs (5 UE and 7 LE) with 100% efficacy (95% CI 73.5-100%). The range for arm and leg circumference: 13-24 and 24.5-34.5 cm, respectively. They stopped the study early because there was 100% success rate. I wish they would have continued. . . Mousegirl
Conservation status: Least Concern
Classification: Native
The population of the Mousegirl meme has dramatically increased in recent weeks, and memeologists are keeping a close eye on their growth and effect in the ecosystem.
The Mousegirl is capable of rapid sexual reproduction, readily hybridizing with other memes in its chosen ecological niche. For instance, the proliferation of Mousegirls is likely a cause of the increase in terrible puns amongst other memes involving anthropomorphic animals. Some tumblr users have claimed that this high reproductive rate makes the Mousegirl "inherently sexualized" and consider them to be a noxious meme. This occurrence has spurred the Mousegirl to hybridize with the predatory Kung Pow Penis meme, a keystone species notable for its utility in controlling invasive memes.
For those who do believe the Mousegirl to be a noxious meme, a possible approach is to use standard pest control methods targeted at rodents, such as poison. However, in the case of the Mousegirl, we believe this is more likely to induce further hybridization, possibly spurring something like a Poisongirl.
We at the TACM consulted an expert in the subject of anthropomorphic memes, who suggested that "they would kiss."

Breath of Life! Thanks @northamericanrescue and @medschoolposts: A Pulitzer prize photo, and certainly worthy of that award... This photo shows two power linemen, Randall Champion and J. D. Thompson, at the top of a utility pole. They had been performing routine maintenance when Champion brushed one of the high voltage lines at the very top. Over 4000 volts entered Champion’s body and instantly stopped his heart (an electric chair uses about 2000 volts). His safety harness prevented a fall, and Thompson, who had been ascending below him, quickly reached him and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He was unable to perform CPR given the circumstances, but continued breathing into Champion’s lungs until he felt a slight pulse, then unbuckled his harness and descended with him on his shoulder. Thompson and another worker administered CPR on the ground, and Champion was moderately revived by the time paramedics arrived, eventually making a full recovery. #medicmonday #resuscitation #readyglove #medic #ems #savinglives #tacmed #paramedic https://www.instagram.com/p/BuDVpWMnD9J/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1qd68qixoz752
