I find it odd how in all the other routes, Toue lured Aoba and his love interest there to get to Aoba, but in Clear's route, Toue was more focused on Clear than anything else.

Like, he questioned multiple times why Clear rejected him as his master, despite both he and Aoba sharing the same power of Scrap. He said “you went against your own” and included himself in that phrasing but like weren't you the one who said you threw him out because he was a defected model?? Not to mention, you told Clear that you view him as your “child” only to then follow up that statement with “but there are countless replacements for you” but if that's the case then why didn't you just replace Clear with a different alpha model in his bad end?

Why did you keep him specifically if you could just replace him? Do they not all look the same? What makes Clear so special to Toue? Why does Toue want to keep him around? And why did Clear slip up and accidentally call Toue his master in his bad end route only to then autocorrect himself immediately after??

It was implied that before the alphas were made in Clear's image, that it was just Clear, Toue, and the other researchers and Oval Tower workers, Clear's grandpa included. Why did Toue create the alphas in Clear's image if Clear was just a defected android, as good as garbage and deemed useless to Toue and his work? We all know that Toue views Sei and Aoba as his sons in a fucked up abusive sense, that much is evident in how he treats Sei.

But, what about the alphas? What about Clear? They're not his slaves, those would be the residents of Platinum Jail. They're not his children, he treats them far differently than Sei. If they were mere tools used for his research, he would have made an entirely different model after Clear was thrown out, not models that look identical to the same broken machine that failed to give him the results he wanted.

Why did he make Clear? What was his purpose before he was thrown out and why was he deemed defective? Why are the alphas deemed “almost perfect?” What did they do for Toue that Clear didn't do before he was thrown out for him to see them as “almost perfect?” I'm not saying or alluding to anything, I'm just saying it's WEIRD. Like, I'm not the only one who thinks Toue's fascination with Clear is fucking weird, right? Toue Tatsuo is a weird weird man.

What is DRAMAtical Murder?

I’m actually a little surprised to be writing this myself, in the year of our lord 2023, but why not? I didn’t know about it myself until recently, and now that it’s available with an official English translation, it’s a lot more accessible.

First of all, DRAMAtical Murder (or DMMd for short) is a visual novel that came out in 2012 in Japan. It was published by Nitro+CHIRAL, features art by Honyarara, and has some amazing music as well (the theme song is by Goatbed, with ending songs by them, Itou Kanako, VERTUEUX, and Seizi Kimura). It is a boys’ love or BL visual novel, probably the softest of the Nitro+CHIRAL titles; since its publication, it has received several additional pieces of media: a fandisk (Re:Connect), a sanitized version for the PSVita (Re:Code), and even an anime which... is certainly one way to get into it.

In 2021, Jast Blue made an official translation which was released both on Steam (censored) and their own website (uncensored). A patch is available on their website to restore the uncensored content for those who purchased it on Steam, which still allows the player to receive all the achievements. There was also a fan translation lovingly created many years ago, and the controversy over which version is better rages on. I won’t comment about it here; just know that whichever version you prefer, that is your right.

But what is DMMd about? Well... this is gonna get long, so let’s buckle in.

DMMd is set in a near-future cyberpunk setting, generally positive and colorful rather than dystopian. The story takes place on an island off the coast of Japan, Midorijima (literally “green island”), where many of the residents have been forced off the island due to the building of a gigantic sort of adult playground, Platinum Jail, where the rich and elite party like there’s no tomorrow. The remaining residents of the island live in what’s left of the city, though the owner of Platinum Jail, Tatsuo Toue, seems to be trying to grasp the remaining land as well for his own purposes.

Some of the residents have taken to forming gangs called Ribstiez, which control different parts of the Residential District. Others play a virtual game called Rhyme that takes place entirely within the players’ minds. This is facilitated through the use of Allmates, small robotic creatures that can look like anything the user desires and have multiple functions -- some manage social media, some help their owners with their daily schedules, etc.

Our protagonist is the young man known as Aoba Seragaki.

Aoba, 23 years old and single at the start of the game, works at Heibon Junk Shop. He is demonstrated to have an unusually persuasive voice when he chooses to, but -- aside from that, and his hair having sensation in it -- he seems to be an ordinary young man just trying to live a simple life. He lives with his grandmother, Tae, as his parents left Midorijima when he was young, and he has an Allmate: a small, fluffy, blue dog resembling a Japanese Spitz, named Ren.

Aoba has four potential love interests (plus a secret one whose route is unlocked as you play through the others’ routes).

First up is Koujaku.

Koujaku is an old childhood friend of Aoba’s. He had to leave the island when they were young, but came back around three years prior to the start of the story. He leads the Ribstiez gang known as Beni-Shigure and has a red sparrow Allmate named Beni. To supplement his income, he works as a wandering hairdresser and sets up on the street to cut hair. He and Aoba have a comfortable friendship that gets tested in his route.

Next, we have Clear.

Clear is a mysterious stranger who literally falls out of the sky the first time he and Aoba meet. He refers to Aoba as “Master” and refuses to take his gas mask off under any circumstances. To say any more about him would spoil literally his entire route.

Next up is Noiz:

Noiz appears first when he challenges Aoba to a match in Rhyme, insisting that Aoba is an old player of the game despite the fact that Aoba doesn’t remember ever having played Rhyme in the past. Noiz is part of a Rhyme gang known as the Ruff Rabbitz, and his Allmate is a small black-and-green cube called Usagimodoki. It’s entirely possible he has several of them, since they can be seen hanging in chains from his belt. Noiz works as an information broker to earn an income on Midorijima, but he’s not originally from there, as we learn on his route.

Finally, we have Mink.

Mink is a complicated character, as he doesn’t speak too much and when he does, it tends to be in riddles. He’s also not originally from Midorijima; while it’s not specified, his aesthetic is very much Native American. He has a pink cockatoo Allmate who is not named during the main game. Mink runs a Rib gang called Scratch made up of escaped convicts. His reasons for wanting Aoba on his side are his own, only revealed far into his route. His is the darkest of the routes, and I would say a trigger warning is in order for this one.

As for the final love interest, I won’t talk about it here. More fun to find out for yourself, right? Just remember: there’s some weird shit in this game.

Lest I forget, I must mention some other important characters. First up, Aoba’s friend Mizuki.

Mizuki runs the largest Ribstiez gang on Midorijima, Dry Juice. He’s a tattoo artist and owns a combination tattoo parlor and bar, the Black Needle.

There’s also Virus and Trip.

Virus and Trip (who are emphatically not twins) are a pair of yakuza who seem to show up a lot around Aoba. They claim to be his biggest fans.

Of course, there’s also Tae, as well as Aoba’s boss Haga (who has a robotic Allmate named Junker), Yoshie (who runs a courier service and owns a sleek dog Allmate, Clara), and a trio of young siblings who torment Aoba at his work - Mio, Nao, and Kio. In addition, one of the most corrupt cops on the island, Akushima, regularly pops up to bother the characters.

As the common route progresses, Aoba learns more about himself and his past -- and realizes he has to stop what’s happening before it’s too late. He eventually heads into Platinum Jail no matter which love interest’s route is chosen; the events that unfold change depending on which route you’re on, but playing through all of them and unlocking the secret route will finally reveal the truth of it all.

Re:Connect, as befits a fandisk, explores more with each of the love interest routes after their good endings (and also a bit more of the bad endings). It also has a route specifically to fill in Aoba’s backstory and youth. Re:Code is basically the same game, but sanitized -- all of the sex scenes were removed and given “cleaner” CGs. It did add a route for Mizuki, which involved more of Aoba’s backstory. Finally, the anime was passable, though it compressed all the love interests’ stories into an episode each and went with the secret route for the ending. It is absolutely unwatchable in dub, except for laughs and memes. Re:Connect can be found and played with the fan translation online, and is absolutely worth locating. Re:Code, unfortunately, is still only available to play on the PSVita and has not been translated at all.

Oh, and there was also a stage play! Remarkably, they produced a butai in 2019, well after the games had come out, with the different love interest routes portrayed on alternate days. I would be happy to make a post babbling about that if there’s interest. Apparently the original run did well enough that a new production was announced earlier this year, which will be happening at the end of April. A new route was added for Virus and Trip, and the whole thing is supposed to be a “supercharged” version, not just a retread of the original.

OH I FORGOT there are also drama CDs that continued all of the love interests’ stories and had even more new music, as well as some other fun things like a special drama CD for the anime release, an April Fool’s game that basically parodied Mother (Earthbound), and manga. And there’s a webtoon now. And lots of merch. And figures. Basically there’s just a lot of fun stuff to find.

And that’s DMMd! I obviously love it quite a bit, but I certainly acknowledge that it has its flaws and difficult scenes. I’d still recommend it, though. I think the writing is very well handled and the sex scenes are hot as fuck.

New day, new Whumpuary post! This one is a bit NSFW so beware, okay? I'll try my hand at a fandom I kinda abandoned a bit ago too, btw, lmao, it's about time I revive this.

Prompt: Blindfolded

Characters: Takeo Toue [later Sterling] (Dramatical Murder OC), Clear

It was... weird. Not being able to see anything while sitting on a chair, clothed in not much else but a bath robe that was already pulled halfway down... Clear had taken a relaxation bath in the communal bathroom beforehand, something he had been advised to do by Mink, given how stressed he was lately with all that was going on around the house as everyone gradually moved in - and Clear, together with Mink, was often needed, seeing as he was one of the stronger guys in the household.

The last to move in was Tamika, a timid but bubbly young woman with a smile worth more than gold, everybody liked to agree - and she just so happened to be Takeo's little sister. Takeo himself... At first, Clear wasn't sure what to think of him. He was quite peculiar, an oddball amongst several of his kind, and yet something about him was special. Maybe it was his relation to the one goal they all aimed to reach and destroy - a man named Tatsuo Toue, if evil were a living, breathing person. Maybe that was why. Because Takeo and Tamika were this wretched guy's almost equally wretched kids, a product of his heinous deeds done to them.

After the big showdown at Oval Tower, however, it was like a switch flipped for the older of the two siblings. The lifeless glint in Takeo's eyes vanished and made space for something else, something much brighter and filled with excitement for an emotion filled life going forward. Compared to what he looked like beforehand, the half Brit now looked much softer, and his British accent slipped through much more clearly. It was something Clear often swooned over, although he was never programmed to do that - and yet, Takeo somehow managed to, without touching the android in any way, redo his wiring and give him the ability to develop crushes, feel such intricate feelings and experience the feeling of truly loving someone.

And loving he was, that funky Englishman, although he often had a rather hard time regulating his emotions since the grand final in the tower in Platinum Jail. But that's what the rest of the guys were there for, especially Clear - he loved being helpful, and given that he was in a sort of similar predicament as Takeo, they agreed to always help each other out when it came down to it.

Due to this, their relationship bloomed, blossoming into something more loving and intimate, something Clear had never imagined for him to happen with the leader of a vigilante group of all people. Then again, he also had something left for Mink who was known to be a sturdy ex-convict... Perhaps the albino had a type there.

That night, however, his thoughts weren't with Mink, Aoba or anyone else really. As he sat there blindfolded, instructed not to move an inch from his seat, all his mind could think of was scenarios of what could happen to him once Takeo returned. He wouldn't hurt him, that much was for sure, but Takeo also wasn't quite known to be, well... the gentle type. He liked to do things the rough way whenever that choice seemed more feasible, and usually, he'd go after the motto "My way or the highway". A greedy little bastard, but filled with many little surprises not even Mink would see coming often enough.

With Clear's mind wandering aimlessly, his ears only faintly picked up the sound of footsteps approaching the room he was in. Once they fully focused on that sound, however, his train of thoughts stopped and his head moved ever so slightly towards the general direction of the door - it was a little hard for him to navigate if his most vital body part, his eyes, was restricted from him to use. The footsteps grew louder, deeper, and they made Clear's spine tingle - another little detail that had only begun happening ever since his feelings for the brunette had started coming to light more clearly - up until they stopped. And instead, the android heard the crisp sound of the door clicking open, how the underside of it slightly dragged along the carpet as light flooded the room. This much he noticed through the dark void of the blindfold he wore. He had no real idea of what was coming for him though, and just the simplest thoughts caused his throat to close in both excitement and fear.

A deep chuckle rang throughout the room once the person stepped inside, and Clear instantly recognized this chuckle as Takeo's voice - dark, a little raspy from the cigarettes he'd often smoke when stressed and yet as melodic as a freshly and perfectly tuned piano. Clear didn't even have to see it. He knew that the Brit was smirking rather meanly at him, he almost heard it. Takeo slowly made his way over to the poor albino, who sat there with shaking breath, not knowing what to think or where to turn his head so he simply kept it still. Once a soft thud sounded in Clear's ears, he knew that the gang leader had probably gotten down on one knee - he was certain once a soft, if calloused, hand landed on his right leg, weighing it down just the tiniest bit.

"What. Don't tell me you're scared, Clear. Or are you?", Takeo teased the robot, who shivered the moment the former started to speak, even more so once his very own name rolled off the Englishman's tongue, as smooth as silk. When Clear couldn't give any type of response, Takeo's smirk transformed into a grin, white teeth flashing towards purity incarnate that sat right in front of him, not daring to move at all. He brought up his right hand towards Clear's face and gently but firmly grabbed his chin, turning his head to the right, then to the left as he inspected his partner. "Tell me, luv. What's it feel like not being able to see anything at all, hm? To be forced to trust your other senses, which are now enhanced to a double, if not triple the amount of what they were like before... And I know you've already been quite sensitive beforehand. It's exciting, innit? Gives you a pretty strong rush, I'm sure... Tell me what it's like, Clear.", he teased some more before demanding for Clear to speak up, his voice on a steady low, lower than normally, which made the latter's mechanical heart jump.

He breathed out one last shaky breath and swallowed thickly, then began stuttering a sentence together - an action Takeo saw as extremely cute, if a little pitiful. "It's... It's certainly a new feeling... I mean it's- it's not like I'm inexperienced or something", an awkward laugh from the white-haired android, "It's just, well, heh... I'm not exactly, uhh, what's the word... used to it...? Yes, something like that.", Clear somehow stammered together, another chuckle escaping the half Brit who caressed his favorite robot's chin a little, thus making him purr almost like a cat. "Interesting, really... But that didn't answer my question, I fear. I wanted to concretely know... do you like it... or don't you? Don't be shy, I don't bite.", Takeo sang into Clear's right ear as he drew his head closer to it, effectively causing a wave of goosebumps to wash over the albino's back. Another shaky breath came from him and his lips parted as if he wanted to speak, yet the words got stuck in his throat as he dryly swallowed and as such resorted to simply nodding his head yes.

"Good boy... That's just what I wanted to hear. Or, well, see, in this case, but... the point still stands.", the brunette vigilante leader growled praises directly into Clear's ear - and Clear would've been lying if he said he didn't drool over those two specific words at the beginning. He heard Takeo get up again by then, though the latter made no attempts to leave Clear in the literal dark once more like he did earlier. Instead, the Englishman reached for the belt of his trousers and opened it, the metal clattering loudly before his pants audibly hit the ground and he shook his feet out of them messily.

Once more, the grin on his face widened, and if he weren't a human, one would've assumed Takeo was the Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland, it was almost that wide. Shamelessly, the tattooed brunette then sat right down on Clear's lap, roughly taking his wrists and guiding his hands to his chest where they immediately slipped underneath his shirt, caressing the deep crevices of the gang leader's abs which made said leader tilt his head back just the tiniest bit as he watched intently for a minute through half-lidded eyes. They quickly shot back up again though and gained a somewhat menacing glint, something at which Clear hitched in primal fear while his hands traced Takeo's side tattoo - again, he didn't even have to see it for himself. He simply knew that the older of the two had that predatory look in his eyes, as if Clear was nothing more than Takeo's prey - and he was just about to have a feast for dinner.

"You're in for a wild ride, honey... I can assure you of that.", was all Takeo muttered as he grabbed Clear's cheeks, pulling their faces closer together while he spoke before their lips clashed - and whereas Clear's red eyes instinctively fell shut, even underneath the blindfold, Takeo's deep green eyes stayed open, half-lidded like earlier, focused on the person in front of him.

That night, Clear was nothing but game during a hunt. And that same night, Takeo held the shotgun right against his prey's head.

(Might I say I kinda outdid myself? Like, damn-)

Aoba was just living an ordinary life, working at a secondhand shop and staying out of trouble. So, naturally, trouble came to find him.

--Hi, I just realized that I never posted the big fic I wrote this year, so have a very belated link. Please make sure to read the tags going in. This was a huge labor of love for me, and also a source of stress because it really took some effort to wrangle it into the fic I wanted to write... which turned out to not be the fic I started out writing. All the effort was 1000% worth it, though.

There are also several short one-off sequels to address some of the stuff that came up during the writing, and I'm working on one (possibly final) story for it. I also included a deleted scene for the heck of it because I really liked the writing in it. Of course there's stuff I'd change or edit now, but the fic stands complete as the longest fic I've written to date and I'm proud of that.
