#the 'Blackbeard is the best pirate of all time' stuff is so funny when you consider she was just an ocean away in the ofmd timeline
Text
last season Zheng Yi Sao (conquered China, massive fleet) heard people say Blackbeard (conquered nothing, no fleet) was the best pirate of all time and got so irritated she decided to drag a fleet of ships across Panama about it.

The more I think about it, the more my Stizzy's Revenge theory makes sense. I'm so excited about it I have to add few addendums:
It mirrors Stede's dream so well
"Stede, Blackbeard, and Izzy are on an arc together. Whether they're in stories together or not, their ultimate arc is together. I think, by the end of this season, the last episode, that first scene [in S2 E1] will be gratifying. I won't say why, but their fates are tied together." (David Jenkins in this interview)
Wouldn't it be totally unexpected but at the same time really gratifying if, instead of being an obstacle to be killed, Izzy was the connecting element between Stede and Ed? If the three of them reached the conclusion together that Stede's and Ed's path are too divergent at the moment - and that each has to do their own self-discovery for a bit?
It also would be incredibly funny to see Stede sailing away with Izzy of all people and leaving Ed behind. I mean who would have thought this was even remotely possible at the start of S2?
(what this would do to the fandom though...)
It would take Ed's needs seriously - taking it slow
I think it would be such a relief for Ed if Stede understood that Ed was (at least for now) finished with piracy and needed time away from everything and everyone to reconnect with himself.
Not a breakup, they're still in love, still together and they'd definitely reconnect later - when they're both ready.
Izzy needs a break too
As of Ep 7, Izzy is doing his best to suppress his heartbreak and trauma - and you could almost believe he's moved on. His performance of best-breakup-ee ever must be exhausting though.
Remove Ed from the picture for a while, let Izzy gather his strength (and he's done so much already, he can do it!) and give him Stede who's maybe not in the same boat, but who's the one person in the world who can at least begin to understand.
And then, after a while, have that talk with Ed.
Stede and Izzy are actually really good together
With Stede, Izzy is patience itself, but he also knows when to tell him what's what. With Izzy, Stede doesn't have to hold back. He can be as childish and bad-tempered as he wants.
From a showrunner standpoint, those two play off each other really well. I could see one or two episodes in S3 with them doing pirate stuff without Ed (before the inevitable reunion).
Also, if Ed and Stede get together again at the end of S2, were do they go from here? Back to pirating? Unsatisfactory - we all know Ed doesn't want this anymore. Open an inn? And what's supposed to happen in S3?
Stede sailing off with Izzy would make for a fascinating storyline and a great starting point for S3.
The symbolism of the flag
Tumblr media
I'm obsessed with this flag. I love the ambivalence - it could as easily be Blackbeard (with the spear) and Stede (with Ed's heart). But I prefer the Stede and Izzy version.
First Stede: he's the angry skeleton - baring his teeth and holding Blackbeard's spear (and don't forget the merman scene in Ep3 - Stede's holding a spear like trident there too). This symbolizes Stede finally becoming a real pirate - something, I think, that is very important to him. He would drop everything for Ed, sure, but in my opinion that wouldn't be good for him. Stede needs this.
Secondly, Izzy: I love that they made Izzy smaller (he's even got fewer ribs) and generally softer looking. He's holding either Ed's heart (he's been doing that for a lifetime anyway) or his own, as a sharp contrast to Blackbeard stabbing it.
Both their left (heart) hands form the name "Ed", protected by their arms, tails and whole bodies. They're like yin and yang, darkness and light, feminine and masculine.
They're not touching - without Ed, there would be no connection (and it's really difficult to imagine those two becoming friends otherwise).
Swimming together, complementing each other, protecting each other and their shared love. Isn't that beautiful?
Finally, the last episode is called "Mermen"
Need I say more?

You can just say you don't like Izzy you don't have to say he deserves to be abused
he doesn’t! ignoring the fact that what characters “deserve” isn’t always the best way to view stories because, y’know, how much can a character deserve anything? characters do things to shape the stories they’re in, to make the story what it is, to give actions and reactions and consequences, it’s not about deserve.
anyway. if we’re doing this, then no, izzy doesn’t deserve bodily harm, to become disabled because of ed’s actions. of course he bloody doesn’t, stede’s reaction to the toes thing (“where’s the laugh there?”) Is right, it’s not funny, it’s deeply upsetting and we the viewers obviously know it isn’t right or okay.
i was talking about izzy emotionally abusing and manipulating ed into becoming the violent persona that ed didn’t want to be anymore, making him feel he had no safe alternative, which ed didn’t deserve either. do you see? how both can inflict shit on each other and neither of them have to be right about it? izzy has suffered the violent masculinity he believed made blackbeard great, believes makes men and pirates great, which is actually fucking tragic. it’s sad izzy even thought that way, but he isn’t the only man on the show to do so. it’s what ofmd is so good at highlighting. they have both made horrific choices and permanent damage has been done. they both have to deal with that, and i wholly believe they will. i would be curious to know what initially brought them together, because there must be some genuine friendship and trust there that’s been soiled along the way and has ended up a cycle of them hurting one another and not listening or breaking it off.
i do like izzy, i think he’s an interesting character and played exceptionally well, and i’m looking forward to his arc in s2. i think he has his own shit he’s never talked about that viewers aren’t privy to yet - not in a “tragic backstory absolves character of actions” way, just baggage like most of the characters have that dictates some of their decisions - and i would love to see some of those layers peeled back. there’s a lot going on there for sure.
what i don’t like are Izzy Fans™️ who cannot stand any kind of criticism of his character, when he is quite literally one of the main antagonists of s1. i also don’t like how so many conversations centre around him while other characters are sidelined. like fucking hell just be capable of discussing stuff without getting your knickers in a twist, please. you can like izzy without jumping to his defence as soon as someone else points out he fucked up too, badly so and many times, regardless of his own pain. i promise nobody will stop you liking him. it’s okay. someone tagging an izzy post as “yes cry harder” or “you reap what you sow” etc doesn’t mean all of the above isn’t also true lmao i’m sure izzy will cope

when you are reading this rant take full offense its 2am here and im mad as hell
fair warning this post is long as fuck and has several arguments pertaining to specific peeves i need to rant about before i go crazy. if you're not interested just keep scrolling it's not hard it's literally the core of social media navigation
you know what? ima say it.
black flag is the best ac game and deserves more recognition than just pirate drinking jokes because:
nearly every named character (sorry burgess and cockram) has development and personalities. cant say that for that many others in other games.
not too much fucking shit to do in it (unlike uhhhhhhhh every fucking other game in the franchise. stop it. i dont need 500 treasure chests in arno's game he already has an excellent revenue with the cafe. i dont need a ton of side quests. i dont need 30+ chests per london burough. i dont need a million question marks on my map. i dont need all of egypt or greece to be littered with shit to do. fuck this.).
unlocking shit is so much easier. edward knows where every treasure chest is and doesnt pay for treasure maps. and literally unlocking shit is so much easier.
base is slept on. its fucking cool. its fucking fun. its fucking useful as shit. its fucking pretty as all hell. fuck you.
good story, fun story, great dlc, relatable story (unless youre some bootlicking cowardly rich cunt) emotional story but not depressing (unity im looking at your ending. origins stop killing children.), satisfying end.
i can do the combat with one hand. you know what that means? i can eat and drink without pausing. i can reply to text messages without pausing. i can pet my dogs and cats while playing.
main character actually has changed by the end of the game a vast amount. motherfucker, edward changed more in his antó mission than ezio did in his trilogy.
if you dont complete all objectives you still have a passing score on the mission. do you know what its like to be raised to only get good grades on stuff and see yourself getting a 60% on a thing thats supposed to be a pass time just because you forgot something.
the naval combat isnt hard you just need practice. also i know the hunter ship sucks in the first mission you encounter but literally drop your sails but hold the wheel. once its in view let go. swim to it. take out the crew. swim back. bada bing bada boom go oneshot the crew. incredible, you're safe now.
legendary ship battles are really fucking cool and my mom doesnt yell at me for killing a giant beast for next to nothing.
the sea shanties and tavern songs slap.
farm animal petting simulator. not forced to kill dogs (ac3, odyssey).
obviously its good if the other games are just gonna copy paste it.
ed's tattoos are sick.
edward is literally the first canon bisexual. he literally says so in game. he literally fucking flirts with blackbeard. he literally was a pirate. why the fuck do you think birate is such an accurate pun.
diving outfit.
thicc.
the female characters dont have titties all over the place. even anne's boobs arent that big, which is good considering she is underage. the same cannot be said for many of the women in ezio's games.
guess who has a solid, interesting, and realistic personality. not kassandra or alexios thats for sure.
he is NOT moved by man pain (ezio, connor, bayek) to carry out his missions. he didn't want to be poor, he wanted to be able to provide for his family. he is just carrying out his dream to sail a ship. when he starts being "good", he is doing it out of guilt and shame on his past self (what, self reflection? someone, teach jacob this term), not because "wahh my girlfriend/mom/child/family died :'(", he wanted to make it up to his lost friends by making them proud and doing what they wished he had done. his regrets are in not being a better friend while mary was alive, not seeking out her killers (guards at fort). thatch's death crushed him, but he didn't thrust his anger on seeking revenge. and the characters that did die? they had personalities and development and were interesting and memorable. i cant tell you shit about cristina.
he is very respecting of women, especially for a white guy from the 1600s. he, as a teenager (under 17 i believe), attempted to save a woman he did not know and had no intentions of wooing (hey um ezio? you literally only were able to save cristina from being raped because you stalked her because you thought she was attractive. like thanks for saving her but uhh am i the only one that finds that creepy?) even though the odds of winning against three older men were stacked against him and he knew they could (and almost did) beat him to death. fuck if caroline wasnt there he would've been killed.
the modern day stuff is an excellent way to separate intense scenes and the little mini hacking games are fun puzzles. oh boohoo desmond isn't there? yes he was, half the things you hack literally give you desmond content.
rebecca's outfit fucking slaps.
from experience, its fun to play even if you dont know shit about the other ac games. pirates are cool and the story is easy to follow, just be prepared to find some of the other endings big letdowns or lots of the other games' missions boring.
is that fanservice that goes both ways but doesnt oversexualize any gender? why yes, it is!
stop reducing black flag to alcoholism jokes like yall constantly fucking do, it has so many other talking points and if you wanna make fun of something maybe choose something that isnt addiction. literally i make fun of edward constantly without pointing out his alcoholism it isnt that hard. if you're gonna make fun of edward for drinking rum when water in the 1700s often wasnt safe and making fun of him when he was depressed (he has multiple other intended self harming behaviors shown in game so no, he wasnt just drinking because its fun), why don't i see the same "wHy is aLL tHe WiNE gONe?" posts for arno? he was an alcoholic too. in fact arno and edward have a lot of the same forms of depression but oh, arno's a more serious character personality wise and isn't a pirate so his grieving isn't as funny.
and like, there are plenty of other things to make fun of with edward that might not make light of alcoholism because no, edward's drinking in the main story was not written to be a joke. here, a list of things i regularly make fun of him for:
this highwaisted man's got feminine hips
there is no reason for him to be that thicc
his bangs are a mess
his hair???? glows???? okay rapunzel.
his tatts that are just lines
actually you know what his tatts in general what do they mean ubisoft what even language are the words on his body in
how this whore opens the bottled messages on the beach. "ah yes, let me put this mysterious item in my mouth. i have no idea where its been. i could very well open it to read a note that says "i pissed on this""
"woman i just met... must respect her.. man i just met... im either going to give you a death threat, tease you, or flirt... sometimes multiple choices will be done......"
i mean he had the full right to be a bastard to walpole on the beach since he did try to be friendly but walpole was being to bitchy and needy. and like them being stranded wasnt edward's fault but walpole was still gonna make him build a ship and there is no reason for edward to trust walpole since after they get to havana he can easily just be like "thats a pirate, hang him." but like. the way he just immediately decides to steal his identity. legend.
why does he just blindly follow older men's orders like that
he trims his beard to a very odd location. i know it isn't a flattering pose but like. look at the underside of his jaw.
"how many references to dog behavior can we put in one character"
phobia of sleeping in a bed
"you saved my life i am eternally grateful."
edward are you seriously arguing with your eight year old daughter about the difference between a boat and a ship
where are your tanlines
how did he not die of skin cancer first
edward probably doesnt have any body hair because ubisoft didnt want his legs to glow in the dark too
look at his marooned outfit. bitch what the fuck is on your shirt. and where are your hair ties.
his dramatic beauty guru smokey eyes
he held that sword by the blade in the single madman quest. wh
anyway, the long run of this is, if you're gonna reblog an edward post from me specifically to make fun of an overused joke, go fuck yourself.

FEATURE SERIES: My Favorite One Piece Arc with Maffew
Tumblr media
I love One Piece and I love talking to people who love One Piece. And with the series going on 23 years now, there is a whole lot to talk about. As the series is about to publish its 1000th chapter, a true feat in and of itself, we thought we should reflect upon the high-seas adventure and sit down with some notable names in the One Piece fan community and chat about the arcs they found to be especially important, or just ones they really, really liked.
Welcome to the next article in the series "My Favorite One Piece Arc!"
My next guest in this series is Maffew, creator of the popular pro wrestling web series Botchamania. For my chat with him, he chose the Alabasta Arc, in which Luffy and his crew not only have to save a desert kingdom but also topple Baroque Works and its powerful leader Crocodile.
A note on spoilers: If you haven't seen the Alabasta arc yet, this interview does contain major plot points. Watch the Alabasta arc starting RIGHT HERE if you'd like to catch up or rewatch!
Tumblr media
Dan Dockery: So I guess my first basic question is, let’s say for some reason, I got to the end of Drum Island and I said “Well, One Piece ends here for me. This seems like a good finale.” What would you tell me to keep me going into the Alabasta Arc in one sentence?
Maffew: Well, after Chopper has made all the kids cry, you’ll need pickin’ up.
That’s pretty good! What was the impetus for you getting into One Piece? What made you want to jump into an anime that’s nearly one thousand episodes long at this point?
I think I tried watching it on YouTube back in 2009, and I just couldn’t get into it. At that point in my life, I wasn’t ready for a character like Luffy and his adventures, and I couldn’t wait for the villains he fought to kill him. So I dropped it. A year later, I’m in Germany and this wrestler ACH was doing a Q&A panel for this German wrestling organization called WXW. And ACH is a REALLY big One Piece fan, and even dresses up as Luffy in New Japan and Ring of Honor. And I was like “Hey, you watching JoJo?” because that was my thing at the time, and he was like “No, no. Just One Piece.” I said, “What else are you watching?” “Just One Piece.” And I’m like “Wait, what? Just the one?” But he was sellin’ it to me like he was a One Piece ad on QVC. And guys like Steve Yurko are so passionate about it, and if one person tells ya to watch something, you’re like “Eh, whatever,” but if five people tell you, you start to pay attention. So I’m gonna blame ACH and my good friend Steve Yurko for this.
Tumblr media
What do you like about this arc in particular?
You get so much wonderful worldbuilding. They go to Alabasta, meet up with Mr. 2, and it’s one of those cool interactions where they’re meeting, but they don’t know who they are meeting exactly, like when they meet Blackbeard in Jaya. So later on, they’re like “Oh, it’s THEM!” There’s a real sense of everything not being really pre-determined at this point. It’s building everything through a bunch of pirates just doing stuff. Ace shows up, knocks out some assassins so he can get his royalty checks.
That’s such a funny way to put it.
Then we get Kung-Fu Dugongs, and they’re a pretty pure expression of One Piece. They’re all synchronized, they’re adorable, they play their part amid all the serious stuff, and they’re completely ridiculous, but they work anyway. And it’s with Alabasta that Eiichiro Oda starts to perfect the tropes that he puts into place throughout, with the new islands, the new leader who everyone loves but is actually a bad person, the crew having to deal with him and the Navy, them having to help put someone back in their position, etc. And even though, on paper, it reads like “Well, he’s gotta beat this dude and this dude and this dude,” it’s so much more chaotic and less formulaic than you’d expect. It keeps things interesting.
I agree. I like how he takes all of these pieces and he’s consistent with them, but Oda always plays around with how he sets them up.
Tumblr media
But it’s all a foot massage before the real reason to watch Alabasta: Sir Croc.
Are you a big fan of him? That dude is so cool, conniving and powerful. He’s kinda the perfect villain.
Back when I was being miserable and first watching One Piece, I really liked him. I like the design, the sand powers that could actually pose a threat. I always appreciate it when a villain provides actual tension. It’s like why I think Goldeneye is still the best James Bond film. Because Alec Trevelyan is constantly reminding Bond “Remember, I could kill you. I’m from the same place as you. I can take your exploding watch and just, eh, I’ll stop that then. Thank you.” And Luffy loses twice to him in the three-match structure that really works here as it did for wrestling in the 70s.
  How so?
So you’d have somebody like champion Bruno Sammartino and someone like Ivan Koloff or one of the Wild Samoans or Stan Stasiak. They’d have one match where the hero would beat Bruno by disqualification. Bruno’s still around to fight, but he’s lost. Luffy survives being thrown in the sand, but he’s been beaten. Then they have the second match, where Bruno would win because the villain would just give up and leave and get counted out. Luffy attacks Crocodile with water, but it’s not enough, and Crocodile just kinda leaves Luffy thinking it’s all done. And then Bruno would be like “Oh no ya don’t. Next time, you won’t be able to escape, because we’re gonna be in a cage match.” And then Bruno wins, just like Luffy wins by punching Crocodile up through that giant enclosed space. He escapes the cage.
Tumblr media
It’s just so satisfying and that’s a great way to describe it. So, villains in the series have had extensive crew members before, but they haven’t been as recognizable and colorful as Croc’s crew, Baroque Works. Do you have a favorite member?
They’re all good in their own way, but at this point, I’m gonna go with Mr. 2. Eh, that’s probably too obvious an answer…
Mr. 2 is a lot of people’s favorite member.
Oh, who cares. I’ll go with Mr. 2. I like how Mr. 2 interacts with everyone, having fun with the boys and fighting Sanji with kicks but respecting him.
So, in this arc, there’s a lot of government intrigue and a revolution is about to happen, and everyone’s dissatisfied with their perception of the monarchy. How did you react to all of this political drama in One Piece?
Well, it’s great because you have Vivi, and you get to learn her motivations and because she’s on the crew, it gives you a reason to care for the crew and how all of the political intrigue affects them. Without her, you’d just hear about a war and say “Oh, sorry about that. Hope it goes well.” And with all this lore being thrown at you because you have Vivi and that connection, it’s adding to the main conflict, rather than distracting.
Yeah, Vivi really grounds it all with a personal attachment. Because otherwise it’s just savin’ the kingdom, which is cool and they’re good for it, but it doesn’t have the same impact. So, they did this back in the Arlong Park arc, but what returns here is the kind of 1 vs 1 match structure, where a member or members of the enemy crew are matched up against a Straw Hat or Hats. Mr. 1 has knife body parts, so he’s obviously gonna fight Zoro. Mr. 2 kicks and Sanji kicks, etc. What do you think about that kind of matchmaking, because it’s also a little wrestling-esque.
Tumblr media
Yeah, right, like if you have D-Generation X fighting the Nation of Domination, you can’t just have The Rock fighting Triple H. Ya gotta have D’Lo Brown vs X-Pac and The Godfather vs Billy Gunn. I like it because the characters feel like they have to prove themselves, like Zoro’s a swordsman, and he’s gotta test himself against another swordsman. And Usopp does it when he fights Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas with Chopper, because they have a weird dynamic and they’re fighting two people and they have no clue what they’re up against.
So, at the end of the arc, they do the iconic “We can’t let Vivi become associated with pirates so we’ll hold up the X symbols on our arms in solidarity” pose. What did you think about that? Because it’s one of the most famous images in One Piece, and it’s hard to avoid it, even if you’ve never watched the series. Was that your first time seeing it?
It actually was. And I’m glad you brought this up because I was watching it and I thought “Wait, they’re just going? They’re not even keeping the duck?” And then they do that with the X and the original opening starts playing and I get goosebumps just remembering it. That really hit me. Because it finally got me really emotionally invested in the series. Made me feel a bit cheeky.
Tumblr media
      ONE PIECE LIGHTNING ROUND!
So, considering you’re such a huge pro wrestling fan, your lightning round is gonna be a bit different. I’m gonna say a Straw Hat that’s in the crew at this point and you tell me which wrestler they’re the most like. You can also tell me what time period they’d fit the most in, since wrestler personalities tend to change. So, Luffy?
Gotta be Cena. Specifically? With Luffy’s attitude? Probably 2015 defending-the-United States-Championship John Cena.
  Zoro?
He’s all business, he likes to fight. So I gotta go with Cesaro.
  Sanji?
  Going with Eddie Guerrero.
  Usopp?
That character is all over wrestling - the underdog who isn’t very good and uses every trick in the book to win. Gonna go with MJF. He had one of my favorite matches of this year against Cody Rhodes and he just had to use EVERYTHING to beat him - brass knuckles, distraction, chairs, everything he could to get that win. But he could be MJF, could be The Miz, could be Mikey Whipwreck from ECW, take your pick.
  Nami?
  Hmmm. Becky Lynch.
  Chopper?
  KeMonito
  Robin?
Oh, she shows up after being booed for ages and you’re supposed to like her, so 2019 Charlotte Flair.

Adrift - A Tack & Jibe short
Bodhi must have been a dragonfly in a past life. Or maybe a frog or a turtle or something else that thrives in the mess and muck of nature. It would explain how her body and soul settle and still out here in the Sound where the brackish water is placid, where it’s as if her kayak is slicing through a sheet of opaque glass.
She has mud and up to her knees from dragging her kayak through the surrounding wetlands, her long sun-streaked blonde hair sticks in sweaty clumps to her neck and forehead, and her own earthy scent swirls around her in the slow, heavy breeze: dirt and musk and patchouli shampoo and coconut sunscreen and lemon-eucalyptus bug spray that only sort of works.
When Bodhi was younger, her moms would have to beg her to come inside and take a bath, to sit at the table like a civilized person and do homework or chores that she never quite saw the point of. Why work on long division when she could climb a tree? Why study old men and the dates of wars when she could scoop tadpoles from a creek. Isn’t that more real? Life squiggling in her cupped palms, sturdy branches holding her, safe, up in the sky? And anyway, her moms always encouraged her to be free and wild and so she is.
It’s meditative, the rhythm of her paddles dipping in and out of the water; one side, then the other. Gentle waves glide along her boat, the seagrass and wild oats dance to the wind, the trees set farther back rustle with life. Along the way, Bodhi spots a flock of Redhead ducks that float in a clump near the shore, Seagulls and Royal Terns loudly scavenge for food and fish, Cormorants fly high above. She even spots a Great Blue Heron, long-legged and graceful and impossibly huge, picking its way slowly through the shallows. The Great Heron spreads its wings suddenly, perhaps startled by Bodhi and her bright red kayak, and takes flight. Bodhi drifts and watches it soar across the sky. Perhaps she was a bird, before, in a different life. She could spend hours or even days out here, all alone among the for birds.
“Hey, can we make a pit stop at the Visitor Center?”
She isn’t all alone. “Sure.” Bodhi smiles back at Hunter who is keeping pace behind Bodhi in her own kayak. Bodhi doesn’t mind the company, she’s out here with friends often, in fact, a whole group of them paddling the sound, or sailing between and around the chain of islands that make up the Outer Banks, or hiking through the dedicated nature preserve that takes up nearly half of this island. Hunter is around a lot lately. Like, always around a lot lately. Bodhi isn’t sure what she should take from that, exactly.
The Porter Island Visitor Center comprises two single-room buildings, one a museum-slash-information center, one a gift shop, both raised up a few feet on decks that connect via a weathered wooden walkway. There’s an outbuilding-type bathroom—barely more high-tech than an outhouse—and in the gift shop there’s a much nicer air-conditioned single stall restroom. They dock, and Hunter heads toward the gift shop.
When Bodhi moved here several years ago with her moms, the Visitor Center was one of their first stops. It was so quaint; a little sand- and salt-speckled shack with lighthouse and beach themed goods for sale. In the adjacent museum there is an entire wall dedicated to the years Blackbeard the pirate used the island’s shallow sound as a refuge in his downtime between the murders and pillages. There’s another whole wall about the island’s lighthouse. But Bodhi quickly adapted from suburban to tiny-island style living and now can’t imagine ever being anywhere else.
Bodhi idly browses the small sea-themed trinkets and a few racks of postcards, a shelf of hats and one of Porter Island t-shirts. There’s a section dedicated to books by local authors and books about local history and about the flora and fauna of the island. Bodhi flips through a book about seabirds. When Hunter emerges from the bathroom, she scans the gift shop until she finds Bodhi, then smiles like the sun coming out. Huh. That’s new.
“Ready?” Hunter freshened up while she was in the bathroom; her hair is smoothed down and damp with water instead of sweat, her light makeup touched up, and there’s no trace of dirt or grime. It’s interesting only because Hunter typically isn’t very fussy about that sort of thing. Sometimes, but she’s usually chill about... Well, everything. That’s why Bodhi likes hanging out with her. And doing other stuff with her.
“Yup. Ready.”
As they head out of the store, though, Hunter stops at the checkout counter and snags a giant sun hat from a spinning rack. “You’re so fair; you should get this.” She plops it on Bodhi’s head as the young-looking cashier watches them with obvious interest.
“This hat is like, excessive,” Bodhi says, tugging at the extremely wide brim. It’s one of those floppy sun hats, a rich lady sipping cocktails while on a yacht type hats. “Anyway, the sun is good for you.” Bodhi hooks the ridiculous hat back onto the rack. Cashier Boy’s mouth flicks up into a tiny smile. He’s cute. Too young, though, probably only eighteen or nineteen, Bodhi would guess. Bodhi is a little unsettled by that; being at a stage in her life now that someone that age would be too young for her to be interested in. Is this what getting old and mature feels like? Gross.
“The sun is good for you in small doses.” Hunter moves in closer still, brushes her thumb across Bodhi’s cheekbone. “All of those gorgeous freckles won’t be so lovely when they turn into melanoma.” Bodhi wrinkles her nose. Hunter’s thumb lingers at the corner of her jaw. Hunter’s eyes are pretty, Bodhi thinks. Like, she knew that but she hadn’t paid that much attention to them before. Well, she has. Just not this much. They’re like, ochre. Or a tiger’s eye gemstone.
“You guys are a cute couple.”
Bodhi startles and moves backward; Hunter’s hand briefly hovers mid-air then falls away. “No, we’re—” Hunter says, as Bodhi stutters out, “We aren’t— We’re—” But what even are they? A summer hookup that’s lasted four summers and now more? Friends, now that Hunter lives on Porter Island full time? Really good friends? Really good friends who hook up sometimes, but then go for long stretches without hanging out at all because it gets too intense too fast and yet they keep finding their way back together, as if it’s something cosmic or inevitable but neither of them really want it to be, unless they do?
It’s too complicated, too much to understand yet alone explain so Bodhi finishes her thought with a casual shrug.
It’s whatever.
“We should get back out there,” Hunter says, saving them all from the awkward moment. Bodhi doesn’t do awkward, so she’s grateful.
Back out on the water, Bodhi can’t seem to lose herself in the natural world like she always does. The cashier’s comment, and Hunter’s face after Her own vehement reaction… Why Hunter has been around so much lately…
“Do you want to stay over tonight?” Hunter calls, trailing behind Bodhi’s kayak once again.
They usually end these excursions by falling into someone’s bed, or sleeping bag, or boat, or, once, a rustic treehouse. And usually it’s casual. It’s chill. Neither of them care to put a label on it because it’s just sex but if things have changed for Hunter, that means Bodhi should probably put a stop to it. Hunter’s her friend and that means something to Bodhi. She doesn’t hurt her friends, not on purpose.
“I dunno. I have to work early.” She never really has to work, let alone early, her moms are cool with Bodhi helping at the sailing shop they own whenever she’s in the mood to help. More or less. She probably should go in though, so it’s not a total lie. “But we can hang after if that’s chill.”
Bodhi can’t see her, and doesn’t crane around to look, but she can hear the disappointment in Hunter’s voice all the same. “Sure yeah, it’s chill.”
Bodhi is now certain that it’s anything but.
+++
At dusk, Bodhi sets up shop on the back deck, a packed bowl on the glass table in front of her, her bare feet propped up next to her phone, a full backpack ready to go next to her reclined patio chair. She waits.
The location is always a secret until the very last moment; a precaution so no one reports their activities and sends everyone scurrying away and they miss the entire event. Tonight an event Bodhi has been waiting for, since she missed the last one. Accidentally fell asleep, her own fault. Her friend on the inside will text her when it’s go time, so Bodhi watches the sun go down and the moon come out as her eyelids grow heavier and her mind and body relax. But not too relaxed; not this time.
She planned to go with Hunter tonight but…
“Hey.” Willa slides the back door open. Her curly hair is extra wild tonight; Bodhi loves that. She loves that her roommate and best friend is both predictable—never late for a shift at the sail shop, never oversleeps, never once missed a bill’s due date—and also totally off the rails unpredictable. Bodhi really never knows what Willa will do next. She’s predictable in her unpredictableness.
“Whoa, galaxy brain moment.”
Willa’s eyes narrow. “What?”
“Nothing.” Bodhi drops her feet to the deck. “‘Sup dude. Join me.”
Willa picks up the bowl and then holds it away from her, skeptical-like—sometimes she’ll partake, sometimes she won’t, but she always grabs first and hesitates later—then sits at the table next to Bodhi and picks up the blown-glass bowl and lighter.
“What are you doing tonight?”
A flame lights Willa’s face, she smokes and coughs and croaks, “Mostly questioning all of my life choices.”
Bodhi laughs, Willa is always so funny, even when she doesn’t mean to be. Especially then. “Same. But like,” Bodhi loses her train of thought when a cloud passes over the dimly lit moon. It’s wicked. What was she— “Oh. Yo, come with me tonight.” It’s not usually Willa’s scene, this sort of thing, but Bodhi couldn’t say with certainty what Willa scene really is except like, nothing or everything or… Something. Anyway, Bodhi doesn’t want to go alone, and that’s the relevant point.
Willa squints one eye closed, and fixes Bodhi with the other. “Sit around outside in the dark for hours, get eaten alive by mosquitos and no-see-ums while we wait for something that might happen?”
Bodhi grins. “Hell yeah.”
“I thought you were going with Hunter.”
Bodhi waves a hand in the air. She means it to be exactly as vague as it is.
“What’s up with you two?” Willa takes the bowl again and manages not to cough, and sits back more comfortably in her chair. There was time, at the very beginning, that Bodhi thought she and Willa might be something more than friends. First of all, Bodhi was very into the hot skater chick thing, and Willa is smart and determined and super fun besides, but she’s glad they only ended up friends. Bodhi gets a little emotional thinking about not having Willa around and has to smoke a little more weed to settle herself down.
“C’mon, come with me,” Bodhi tries again, when she’s sure she won’t sound too invested in Willa’s answer. “It’s cool, I promise.”
“Another night I would, I’m just so tired with everything going on and—”
Bodhi's phone goes off with a text, and she scrambles to get it. It’s the coordinates for tonight, so it’s now or never, or least not for another several weeks at least. And yet, Bodhi stays in her chair and watches her phone go dark again. “Maybe I’ll skip it,” she says it mostly to herself. “I don’t really want to go alone.”
Willa looks at her with alarm. She’s not the only one. Since when does Bodhi care about doing things alone? Since now, apparently.
“Bo, is it possible you miss Hunter? I mean you two were like, glued together and now you aren’t even speaking to her.”
It won’t be the same without Hunter there. That’s the issue. But why? Too stoned for this conversation and these thoughts, Bodhi’s mind is a jumble of feelings and half-formed ideas and spiraling tangents. She doesn’t have an answer for Willa, or herself, so she shrugs, as if she doesn’t care. She does, though. Too much. Way too much.
Willa stands, grabs the bowl and lighter from the table and plops Bodhi’s backpack into her lap. “Go watch your turtle eggs hatch.”
Federal law prohibits the sea turtle rescue organization from posting the location of active nests. It keeps the turtles safe and keeps flocks of tourists from gathering en mass on the beaches and bothering everyone who lives nearby. Bodhi’s friend Kea volunteers for the organization, she regularly patrols the beaches looking for nests and collects data, keeping tabs on the number of hatchlings that conquer the hard-won journey out to sea.
“You made it.” Kea keeps her voice low and ducks in for a quick hug.
The sea turtle rescue organization has already roped off a small section of the beach, and a handful of volunteers mill around nearby. There’s about ten other people gathered farther back, including a family with two young kids. Bodhi wonders if their parents are aware that they’ll likely be up until morning. Her moms brought her to a few of these hatchings when she was a kid, so she doesn’t judge. It’s cool, actually.
Kea goes off to take some measurements of the nest and count the eggs. It’s a Hawksbill nest, they think, so there are likely hundreds of babies getting ready to hatch. Bodhi finds a spot back with the rest of the non-volunteers. The kids are digging holes in the sand and jumping in and out of them, though their parents are making sure they don’t get too loud or wound up. Bodhi’s buzz has worn off. The night is humid and sticky. She does miss Hunter.
“Did you know sea turtles can hold their breath for seven hours?” Bodhi says to the kids when they scurry past her. They both stop. “And some kinds of sea turtles eat jellyfish.” Bodhi glances back to the parents to make sure they don’t mind her talking to their kids. “Do you guys already know that the babies have to find their way to the ocean all by themselves?” They both nod, in sync. She guesses one or both of them has an interest in sea turtles and probably have a few facts collected of their own. They’re quiet for a few beats, and then the smaller one asks,
“How?”
Bodhi tips her head. “How do they find the ocean?”
“Yeah… Yeah 'cuz if the mom leaves them and they’re just borned--”
“Born,” the other kid corrects.
“If they’re just born— How do they know where to go?”
Bodhi likes how innately curious kids are, how they instinctively yearn to explore the world around them and aren’t afraid to ask questions, to admit when they don’t understand things. She tries to keep that spirit alive in herself.
“Well,” Bodhi draws her knees up to her chest and smiles up at the kids. “Sea turtles are phototactic. Do you know what that means?” They shake their heads no. “It means they’re drawn to light. Like, when you have your porch light on at night and moths and other bugs all come to fly around it? Same thing. So when they’re born, the moon reflecting on the ocean tells them where to go. Cool right? Like, the moon and the ocean are calling to them, telling them where their home is.”
“Yeah!” says one.
“That’s why it has to stay dark,” the other one says, quiet, a little shyer than their smaller sibling.
Bodhi glances back to the parents again. “Right. And the beach at night can seem a little scary, but we’re totally safe and we want to make sure the baby turtles don’t get confused and go the wrong way. They could get too tired or hurt or a predator could get them and that’s not good.”
Bodhi talks sea turtle facts with the junior turtle enthusiasts a little longer, until Kea returns to announce two hundred and twelve eggs total.
“Can I take a peek?” Observers have to stay back, but Bodhi’s a regular at this point. Kea nods and leads Bodhi to the nest that’s illuminated only by the light of the moon.
“So when are you joining our ranks?” Kea asks while Bodhi crouches near the nest. She always asks that, when Bodhi will start volunteering for the rescue. Everyone else on the volunteer team is like, getting their PhD in turtle nesting or whatever, or else retired conservationists with more experience and knowledge than Bodhi will have in her entire life, so.
“Yeah, I’m good.” It sounds dismissive, she knows. As if she doesn’t care. But that’s better than everyone knowing she doesn’t have much to offer.
“All right, all right. You’d be so good in outreach and education, though. Especially with kids.”
Bodhi shrugs. Scratches her neck. “The trainings are too early…”
Kea wisely leaves it alone, though she changes the subject to something else Bodhi doesn’t want to talk about. “Oh, hey, where’s your girlfriend tonight? Hunter, right?”
+++
“I thought you were avoiding me?”
“I was.”
Hunter shifts in the doorway; her hips cocked, one arm braced against the doorjamb, the other stretched across. She’s tiny, a pixie with short brown hair and delicate features and round doe eyes, yet she takes up the entire doorway. “And?”
“And… Now I’m not?”
Hunter doesn’t move. She lifts an eyebrow. If she tells Bodhi to get lost—and she should—Bodhi will do it. But this is their dance: On and off, up and down, together and not. Hunter must be tired of it, though. Bodhi can tell because it’s usually Hunter who comes calling, and Bodhi who gives in once again. Bodhi says nothing and Hunter says nothing, then Hunter finally drops her arms and retreats into the muted cool of her condo, leaving the door open for Bodhi to come in.
This was easier when Hunter was only in Porter Island for the summer, four years of summer months working at one of her mom’s restaurants while she finished school. There was an end date, and Bodhi didn’t have to worry about what Hunter might want after that. Or what she wanted.
“How did the hatching go?” Hunter sits in a hard-backed leather chair, her arms and legs crossed. Hunter’s inherited home decor has always made Bodhi think of a law office waiting room, all heavy wood and leather and polished chrome. Such a contrast to Bodhi’s moms’ colorful bohemian vibe, or the kitschy beach-themed cottage she shares with Willa. The entire condo came as a gift, furniture and decor and everything, a life already chosen for Hunter.
“Good. Kea asked me to join their volunteer corps again.” Bodhi sprawls across the couch, her thighs stick to the black leather.
“You should.”
Bodhi shrugs. Hunter thinks she should do a lot of things. Bodhi sighs and stretches, her t-shirt and shorts bunch up, her hair falls loosely across her face. She knows what she’s doing, and it works. Hunter’s gaze shifts from exasperation to clear desire, and Bodhi wishes they could just keep things the same between them. It’s hot and fun and easy. Why does it have to get complicated just because Hunter moved here? “Look, Hunter. We’ve talked about this. I’m not looking for...” She leaves the statement unfinished because what is she looking for? A time machine? A way to capture the perfect summer fling and put it up somewhere for safekeeping, like fireflies captured in a jar?
“I’m aware.” Hunter’s lips press flat, her eyes flick away. She gets Bodhi. It’s too much, sometimes. “And I’m not asking you to.”
Bodhi sits up. “Okay, then… Okay.”
Sea turtles bury their eggs deep in the sand, Bodhi told the two kids she’d befriended yesterday. They stayed all night and, enraptured, watched the hatchlings take to the sea. Buried so deep that by the time the babies hatch and claw their way to the surface the mama turtle is long gone, far out to sea. One of the kids asked, eyes wide with hope, if they ever find each other, if they might meet up out in the ocean one day. The ocean is too big, their sibling answered, matter of fact. So, so huge it’s impossible. But Bodhi wondered if maybe they did. Despite the odds, perhaps they could find each other someday.
Bodhi stands and offers her hand, reaching out across the expanse. “I’m sorry I didn’t call you.”
Hunter looks up. “You should have.”
“Yeah.” She should do a lot of things.
Hunter takes her hand and rises from the stiff chair, lips pouted and shoulders high. Bodhi tugs her close and kisses her until she stops frowning. Hunter releases a long breath and her body relaxes into Bodhi’s arms. She’s pliable and willing, and so Bodhi walks them to the bedroom and pulls off first Hunter’s clothes and then her own. She’s been with Hunter so many times that the taste of her is like coming home. She knows what makes Hunter sigh or moan or fist the sheets at her side or clutch fruitlessly at the carved oak headboard and it should bore Bodhi but it doesn’t at all. Being with Hunter, in bed or out, is easy. Why change that?
It’s quiet after, a heavy quiet, with Hunter curled at Bodhi’s side. Her fingers drift idly across Bodhi’s stomach.
“I applied to graduate school,” Hunter says, voice gone sex-rough. She clears her throat. “At UNC Wilmington, but also other schools that are… Well, farther away. My mom wants me to get serious about taking a regional manager position with the restaurant group. So. I wanted you to know that.”
“Cool,” Bodhi says. Her chest goes tight. “That’s chill.”
Hunter’s hand moves from Bodhi’s stomach, and she rolls away to find her clothes. “Ryan’s having a party tonight if you want—”
“Yeah, definitely.”
She met Hunter at a party like this one, with camping chairs gathered haphazardly around a fire, sand turned orange from the glow, the ocean so dark it bleeds into the sky, impossible to tell where one begins and the other ends.
Silhouettes move across the beach—dancing, laughing, tipsily leaning on one another. It seems to Bodhi as if she knows every single person on this island and has gone home with many of them and it’s so simple for her. It’s fun, like kayaking or sailing or free-falling off of a pier. She doesn’t need labels or relationships or complications. Or at least, she didn’t.
Hunter stays at her side all night, warm and happy. Bodhi keeps her arm slung around Hunter’s hips, a possessive gesture she rarely feels the need to make. She wants to keep her close by is all.
“I’m gonna get another,” Hunter says, waving an empty can in the air. Bodhi blames her own too many empties for tugging Hunter in close and kissing the top of her head. “Hurry back,” Bodhi says. She’s a very affectionate drunk, so she’s been told.
“Hey! Tell your girlfriend to bring her keg tap over!” Ryan is a loud drunk.
Bodhi ignores the first part. “What idiot is dragging a keg down the beach?”
“Me!” Ryan is fun, but… Well, he’s fun.
It’s not late, but Bodhi is already considering packing it in for the night. She’d rather stay in and hang out at Hunter’s, watch TV, smoke a bowl or two. God, she is getting old. If they leave to go get the keg tap, it’s very unlikely she’ll want to return. “Sorry, dude. Not tonight.”
Ryan boos at her and quickly gets distracted by someone who announces they brought vodka. Hunter returns and together they watch the vodka quickly disappear.
The party really is so much like the one where she met Hunter, and like so many more before that, and yet even Bodhi has to admit that it’s changing. Some people have moved on, and younger, wide-eyed and innocent faces have taken their place. The number of friends who have traded partying for jobs that have them up before sunrise is steadily growing, some even with new engagements and recently signed mortgages and 401Ks. Even Ryan is starting medical school in the fall. The guy who once did ten fireball shots in a row and had the brilliant idea to surf on the top of someone’s Jeep, fell off and found out two days later that he broke his arm in three places will be a doctor.
And next to go will be Hunter. Bodhi tugs her in close again.

“Where’s your girlfriend?”
Bodhi is barely two steps into the marina when Mr. Kelley accosts her. “Why does everyone think we’re together?” Even her footsteps on the floating dock sound petulant, a sulking slap slap slap. Mr Kelley shrugs. He’s the owner of the marina next door to her parent’s sailing shop, and a family friend.
“I suppose you have a— You’re vibing.”
Bodhi pauses. “Mr. Kelley did you really say ‘vibing’?”
“I have nieces and nephews,” he defends. He’s white-haired and sun-worn with a slow, drawling accent and a heart of gold. “Anywho, let’s get to work.”
Once every summer, Mr. Kelley moves the long-time dockers and rental boats into a dry dock to scrape off the coatings of barnacles that have attached to the hulls, and after, applies a coating to slow the accumulation of the sticky little crustaceans. It’s difficult, dirty, exhausting work that Bodhi refuses to let Mr. Kelley do by himself.
“The bane of my existence,” Mr. Kelley says as they set to work on the first hull, while seawater still sluices off in rivulets. They’re definitely a nuisance, the barnacles, as they not only look unsightly but cause significant drag in the water and a waste of fuel in motorized vessels. Bodhi thinks they’re kinda neat, though.
“What’s really cool is like, their adhesive is one of the strongest substances on Earth. The tensile strength is crazy.”
Mr. Kelley grunts. “I believe it.”
They’re also super important to the ocean’s ecosystem since they clean the water like crusty little filters. They also eat with their legs and have the largest penis relative to body size of any animal. So that’s something. Which reminds her…
“Mr. Kelley,” Bodhi calls out over the frantic scraping. “How about you? Any new men you want to dish about?”
“Bah,” he says. “Men.” Which Bodhi takes as a no. Mr. Kelley spends all of his time out on this marina. Unless the perfect man comes sailing in one day and sweeps him off his feet, it’s never gonna happen. Bodhi tried to get him to join a dating app, but he waved her off and claimed he was too old.
Bodhi doesn’t bring it up again until they’ve finished one boat and started working on another. Her arms and shoulders are already sore, but in a good way.
“Let me set you up with someone.”
He sprays off his scraper with the hose, cups some fresh water in his hands, and splashes it on his face. “What is it you told me, Miss Bodhi? Love looks like a lot of things?” He sweeps his arms out toward the marina, the ocean, the sky. “What if this is my great love?”
Bodhi can’t argue with that. She could see herself ending up the same way, her love of the natural world around her could be enough to fill her heart. The thing is, though, she has strong feelings for Hunter. She can admit that. But what she wants to do with those feelings is the issue. She doesn’t really do monogamy and as much as she admires and appreciates her moms’ super-solid relationship, she just doesn’t think it’s for her. And so she’s at a fork in the road: be with Hunter, settle down, commit; or accept that Hunter will be the one that got away. Which can she live with?
The sun is sharp on her skin, sweat pools in her clavicles and between her shoulder blades and settles damply in the waistband of her shorts. She mops her face with the end of her shirt and takes a water break.
“Can I ask you, like. A totally non-judgmental question?”
Mr. Kelley’s face is red from exertion and the heat. He raises his eyebrows and comes to sit on the dock pile next to the one she’s perched on. “Okay, shoot.”
“Are you happy?” It seems like a rude question, but she thinks Mr. Kelley will understand what she means. He’s way chill for an old dude. “Like, actually happy out here alone, doing your own thing? Or would you trade it for something else— Or like, someone else?”
Mr. Kelley is thoughtful as he re-hydrates, then he sets his water bottle on the dock with a decisive thunk. “You get to be my age, Miss Bodhi, and you come to understand that some things just are what they are.”
Bodhi nods, squinting into the sun. “Yeah.” She feels like that now.
“Even still,” he continues. “You have but this one, bitty life to live and if you aren’t living in pursuit of the things—and the people—that make you happy, then what’s the point?” He fixes his pale blue eyes on her, somehow getting to the root of Bodhi’s question. “She makes you happy.”
Bodhi shifts on the dock pile, as if trying to move away from the accuracy of the statement. She nods again. “Yeah. She does.”
He stands with some effort and creakily picks up his barnacle scraper. Next year, she’s bringing other people to help with the operation; Mr. Kelley is going to seriously injure himself one of these days. Not that he’d let that stop him. “Then don’t be afraid to imagine what a life of happiness could look like with her. As you said yourself, love looks like a lot of things.”
Bodhi hops up to follow him back to the partially de-barnacled boat. “I have to say, I do not appreciate you using my words of wisdom against me Mr. Kelley.”
Hunter comes over that night, for sex and for dinner and to get stoned, in that order. Bodhi watches her cook linguine with clam sauce and allows herself to imagine it: Hunter there every morning, that faux-hawk bed-head her hair forms itself into and the way she always, very first thing, stumbles mostly asleep to the kitchen for a glass of water. She’s always parched when she wakes up but refuses to keep a water bottle by the bed because she claims it isn’t fresh enough. Bodhi imagines Hunter there to kiss her goodbye when she goes off to the sail shop or to sail or hike or kayak, Hunter there to greet her when she gets home. Dinner together every night. Regular dates with the same person. Regular sex with the same person.
Bodhi can easily use the blueprint of her parents’ incredible marriage to construct a healthy relationship of her own. She knows it takes sacrifice and selflessness and a willingness to put Hunter’s needs and wants in step with her own, always. Ahead of her own, even. But can that fit in with Bodhi’s more fluid definition of commitment? Would Hunter be okay with that? And what if she wants something Bodhi can’t give her?
Hunter sets two plates of food out on the table and gives Bodhi a concerned look before sitting down. “You okay?”
What if Bodhi is too selfish and too afraid of being constrained? If there were anyone that she could see a settled future with, it would be Hunter. If. Bodhi picks up her fork and plasters on a smile. “Definitely. Thanks for dinner.”
“No problem. Your turn next.”
Bodhi fake-smiles harder. “So have you heard from any of those grad programs yet?”
+++
Bodhi has spent the last two weeks at Hunter’s side, at Hunter’s condo, living out of a backpack that contains a toothbrush and two entire outfits that Bodhi swaps back and forth. She uses Hunter’s deodorant and shampoo and toothpaste and hairbrush until Hunter picks up extras for Bodhi at the store and stashes them all in an emptied out drawer. Bodhi spends a long time looking at that drawer. Her drawer. That she has at Hunter’s house.
“I don’t think I’ll ever want to live with anyone,” Bodhi says one night while they watch a movie. She’s draped over Bodhi, legs entwined, her head rests on Bodhi’s chest and her arm is snug around Bodhi’s waist. Hunter shifts a little, presses a kiss right above Bodhi’s sternum. “Okay,” she says. It’s to her credit, Bodhi thinks, that she doesn’t full-out laugh in Bodhi’s face.
One morning, they wake up before dawn to go hiking. Bodhi wakes first, rubs her eyes with both hands and nudges Hunter awake with her foot. Hunter sits up, groggy and mussed, and blinks into the darkness for a while. She grunts and, predictably, stumbles to the kitchen for her morning glass of water. Bodhi’s stomach twists with a deep pull of affection. She makes Hunter eggs and toast with fruit and packs a backpack and they sail out as the sun is beginning to skim the edge of the stretch ocean behind the condo complex.
The trails out on the North Carolina coast are all flat, easy walks; certainly no comparison to the rigorous mountain trails on the other side of the state. But as much as Bodhi likes the challenge of mountain hikes, there’s something special about the maritime forest trails. When they arrive on a different Outer Banks island for their day’s adventure, the hike takes them from the ocean, up the sparsely populated beach, around though the soft dunes, down onto a long boardwalk built over a salt marsh, and on into the woods. Bodhi always marvels at how these towering trees of pine and holly and oak and maple can not only survive but thrive in such a place; how it grows from nothing but shifting sand, withstands harsh winds and hurricanes and sea spray and flooding, and has found a home for thousands of years on a little sliver of an island. She tells Hunter as much.
“The beauty of nature,” Hunter says, offering Bodhi a sip from her water bottle. “Stand back, trust that things will unfold as they should, and amazing things happen.”
Bodhi doesn’t call her out on the obvious metaphor.
On their way out of the trail’s loop, they encounter an older couple looking a bit bewildered. They pass by, then Bodhi doubles back.
“Afternoon.” They’re both wearing khaki safari hats, cargo shorts, and multi-pocketed khaki vests. One of them has binoculars slung over a shoulder, the other has a camera with a huge zoom lens.
“Awesome day for a hike, right?” Bodhi has found that asking people if they’re lost or need help rarely works. People don’t like to admit that they don’t know what they’re doing, even if they’re tourists who have obviously never been here before. But if she waits, they’ll usually bring it up on their own.
“Oh, yes. Hot though!”
Bodhi mmhmms
“Say, can you tell us if this is the Fort Macon Trail?”
“It is,” Bodhi says. “And you can start in this direction because it’s a loop, but if you want the full experience, start from the beach and head into the forest that way. Make sure you follow the trees with white dots once you’re under the canopy, the trail isn’t super obvious in some places.” They thank her and head into the woods first anyway. She waves, walking backward as she adds, because she has a hunch, “Keep an eye out for Painted Buntings! They migrate through here this time of year.”
They give each other a wide-eyed look of excitement and Bodhi smiles as she turns away. She knows a birdwatcher when she sees one, and the colorful member of the cardinal family is a unique find.
“They’re a threatened species,” she tells Hunter once she catches up to her. Hunter’s face reminds Bodhi of the time she studied for something for once in her life and got third place in a spelling bee and her moms sat in the front row, cheering as if Bodhi had received the Nobel Prize. “What?” Bodhi squints at her.
“Nothing, you’re—” She slips her hand into Bodhi’s hand even though it’s sweaty. “You’re good at that. How you share nature with people.”
Bodhi looks away and mumbles, “I only told them about a bird.” It’s not a big deal.
Hunter shrugs, the motion tugs Bodhi’s hand up and down. “Okay,” she says.
Hunter has left the brochures from various schools sitting out on her coffee table for weeks now. Bodhi has looked at them a few times in the same way she kept looking at the drawer of her stuff in Hunter’s house. It’s hers for the taking, so simple, just reach out and grab the hairbrush, Bodhi. Just open the brochure. Just claim what you want already. After their hike, back at Hunter’s condo, while Hunter is in the shower, Bodhi takes a breath and flips a brochure open.
Downtown Porter Island gets crowded as soon as the weather starts to warm, though “downtown” is a very generous term for two streets and a parking lot. Bodhi and Hunter and Bodhi’s Mom and Ma get ice cream cones and find an empty picnic table, baked from the sun, and try to eat faster than the ice cream melts.
“So, Hunter. How are we feeling about grad school? Excited? Nervous? Concerned that you may be only doing this because of the weight of your mother’s expectations?”
“Jeez, Ma. Sometimes the former high school guidance counselor in you really jumps right out.”
Robin gives a pained smile. “Sorry. Only making sure.”
Hunter licks around her ice cream cone and nods. “Actually, I’m excited. UNCW has a solid business management program and I think the job will suit me. I get to travel, meet new people. I’ll be stuck in an office a lot but…” She slides a knowing look to Bodhi. “I’m sure I’ll still spend lots of time enjoying the outdoors.”
Bodhi’s lemon sorbet gets a little stuck as she swallows.
“And it’s not too far,” Jenn, Bodhi’s mom, adds, likely for Bodhi’s benefit. “A quick ferry ride and a drive south a bit.” She pats Hunter’s arm. “Though of course we’ll miss seeing you all the time!” Bodhi swears she emphasizes the words all the time on purpose, also intended for Bodhi.
Hunter’s ice cream drips from the bottom of the cone, first a few drops, but then the soggy cone breaks away and a puddle of blueberry cheesecake quickly pools onto the table. “Shoot,” Hunter raises her sticky hands. “I’m gonna go get some napkins.”
“I’ll help,” Robin says.
As soon as they’re a few steps away, Jenn raises her eyebrows. “So.”
“So,” Bodhi repeats. She quietly eats her ice cream just long enough to bug her. If her Ma had stayed instead, she’d have been totally grilled by now, but Jenn likes to take the good cop role, usually. Bodhi spares her. “UNCW has a forestry degree.”
Her mom’s face plainly says she’s trying very hard not to react to that. “Oh? Is that so?”
“Mmmhmm.” Bodhi crunches into her cone. “It is so.”
Her mom pokes around her own cup of chocolate peanut butter cup with a wooden spoon. “You know, I was wondering how you were planning on handling the long distance relationship thing.”
Bodhi shakes her head. “We’re not in a relationship.”
“Enlighten me then,” her mom says. “What are you?” There’s no intent to argue there, only genuine curiosity and Bodhi can understand why. Even she isn’t sure how to define it, or if she ever really wants to. She’s come to realize that’s okay.
“She’s just— My person.” How else to explain it?
Jenn considers this, tips her head and swirls her ice cream thoughtfully. “Okay. I get that. And I’m excited for you, too. I think forestry is perfect for you, if you decide to pursue that. You know we always support you one-hundred percent, love.”
She does know it.
Hunter and her other mom are heading back, Bodhi watches them talk and laugh as they cross the street and it’s weird, it’s like her heart is bigger; stronger and brighter in her chest.
“I think it’s perfect, too.”
“And Hunter? Is she aware of how you feel?”
Bodhi doesn’t look away from Hunter’s approach, how right Bodhi’s life is when she’s around, how Hunter just knows somehow. “She does.”
She figured it out long before Bodhi ever did.
+++
It’s raining the day of the big protest in Wilmington. Fat drops of it make steam rise from the pavement as they all gather in place. Bodhi is sweltering inside of her raincoat. It does nothing to deter Bodhi and the other protesters, though, if anything it’s spurring them on. This is nature; it’s not always convenient. That’s the whole point.
The school is moving forward with plans to bulldoze an old-growth pine forest on the edge of campus to make way for a new practice field. Hunter has joined some other protesters in locking arms and forming a human blockade between the trees and bulldozers. Bodhi wasn’t crazy about her being directly in harm's way, but Hunter acknowledged Bodhi’s concerns and did what she knew was right anyway. And that’s what Bodhi loves about her.
“Did you know longleaf pine forests used to be one of the most extensive ecosystems across the South?” Bodhi offers a flyer to the small group scurrying by between classes. It’s fifty-fifty if anyone will take the flyer detailing the importance of pine forests and why they’re trying to save this one, and another one-out-three odds the flyer will end up directly in a trash can nearby. But Bodhi figures that's about one in six people who will read it and possibly be moved to join their cause. “And it’s also home to many plants and animals who don't live anywhere else in the world.”
Behind her, the bulldozers rumble.
“The forest you see behind me is nearly five hundred years old!” Aleksi, the leader of this and many other protests shouts through a megaphone. They have a shaved head and face full of piercings and the confidence and carriage of a leader. “It is home to at least thirty endangered species! Now I ask you, students, faculty, staff, esteemed guests, is this really worth sacrificing in order to give the athletic department yet another piece of our beautiful campus?”
The bulldozers finally leave at 7:30. The already gloomy day has grown darker. Everyone is exhausted and hungry and the construction crew will return the next morning, but the mood among all the protesters is jubilant. “The forest stands another day!” Aleksi calls, and everyone cheers. It’s decided that they’ll reconvene at a nearby vegan burrito place to celebrate and plan for tomorrow.
“I think I stared down that one construction worker for three solid hours,” Hunter laughs, lifting an umbrella someone gave her, a little too late, over both of their heads. Bodhi unzips her steamy raincoat.
“You were amazing.” Bodhi flaps her open raincoat in Hunter’s direction, trying futilely to dry her off even as the rain still splashes up from the pavement.
“Thanks.” Hunter drops a kiss on her lips. “Someone who was on the on the front line with me lives on campus and said they have some clothes I can borrow. Be right back.”
Bodhi watches her. An enormous part of her reluctance to commit to, well, anything, was because she was already happy. And what if she changed things and then she wasn’t happy? If it ain’t broke and all. But things change anyway, and like a fjord in a river, she might as well have some input on the direction of her own life. Nature is always changing, life is always and she has to learn when to change with it, and when to fight for the things that matter,
Aleski, in a black trench coat and black combat boots, approaches Bodhi. “Hey, I appreciate you two coming out. Hunter’s really a force, huh? Only quietly.” Aleksi laughs and Bodhi is fully drawn into their aura. Like, they’re super hot anyway, but it’s the charisma that really does it for Bodhi.
“Yeah, she’s something.” If Bodhi is a swiftly moving river, Hunter is a steady stream: under-appreciated and gentle, yet strong and steady enough to cut through a mountain.
Aleksi leans in, eyes lowered, intentions clear. “Is she your girlfriend?”
“No,” Bodhi says. Aleksi’s eyebrows lift. “She’s more than that.”
“Ah.”
Even now, Bodhi can’t quite put a label on their relationship, or if either of them ever really want to. It’s meant that Bodhi has to be more open and vulnerable, and Hunter more demanding of what she wants from Bodhi. Whatever it is, the two of them, it works. They love each other, they’re on the same page, and that’s enough. It’s more than enough.
Aleksi shifts away, their stoic face covering the sting of rejection.
“We’re usually open to a third, though.” Bodhi offers. Plenty of people aren’t really into that and that’s fine. Bodhi puts it out there only as an offer, nothing more. She’ll have to check in with Hunter first, anyway. Though Hunter’s gaze for Aleksi has been nothing short of awe and infatuation—and desire—from the moment the two of them met.
“Like a package deal?” Aleksi clarifies. They smile. It’s awfully charming. “I could be into that.”
Hunter appears from behind a building, now dry and wearing clothes that don’t quite fit. Bodhi’s heart soars. It’s incredible, Bodhi thinks. How rich her life has become by being open to love in all of its forms. Romantic love, sure. But love for her friends and family and the world around her. Although her path there has been a little erratic, adrift for a while in her own life and mind, in the end she got there.
Hunter holds her hand and, on the other side, Aleksi presses in close. Despite the heat and the rain and the exhausting day, Bodhi is buoyant. Her spirit is free.
And they will save that forest. Guaranteed.

Bravery
Yondu is hanging out on Earth and meets an adorable, little girl named Violet. Ao3 link.
Yondu was used to people staring, especially children. Children were curious about the world, and when they saw something different from what they knew, they were naturally interested. So he didn’t mind that the small girl was staring at him. She had been staring at him since they had come into the diner. She must have been feeling bold because she got up from her seat and walked over to the table where Yondu was sitting with Kraglin. Walking closer, she continued taking him all in. Suddenly, she reached out and touched his skin. He merely smiled, letting her run her hand over his arm. “Does your mommy know you colored yourself blue?” She asked, running her fingers over his arm. Yondu had to chuckle. This was another reason he liked children. They were so innocent and also very honest. He was probably the first alien she had ever seen before. “No sweetie,” He smiled at her. “I was born this way.” The little girl looked up at him. She had a pair of big, round brown eyes that were filled with wonder. Her black hair was in two big pigtails and she had lovely dark skin. Clasped tightly in her hands was a rag doll with red hair. Honestly, she was just precious. “Wow! I wish I was born pink or orange or maybe red!” The girl said. Kraglin chuckled. The two of them had seen the little girl a few times. They were sitting in a diner, waiting for the rain to stop. This little girl was always in the restaurant, usually sitting at the bar with a coloring book. But today, she had gotten up the courage to talk to the two of them. Feeling even braver, the young girl sat next to Yondu in the booth. “My name is Violet!” She said and then held up her doll. “This is my Raggedy Ann doll. Say hi Raggedy!” Violet held up the doll’s hand and made her wave. It was the most precious thing Yondu had seen. “It’s a pleasure to meet you ladies,” Yondu grinned. “My name is Yondu.” “Yondu? That’s a funny name, but I like it.” Violet smiled sweetly. “This fella here is my first mate Kraglin.” “A first mate? What’s that?” “Well, you see darling, I’m a captain. Kraglin is my second-in-command.” “Are you a pirate?” Violet asked excitedly. “Like Captain Jack Sparrow or Blackbeard?” “Don’t know who they are. Are they cool?” “Yeah,” Violet played with one of her pigtails. “But they aren’t blue. Oh, are you like the Hulk? When he gets angry, he turns green and big! Are you sad? Is that your power?” “No sweetie. Like I said, I was born this way. I come from a planet called Centauri. We’re born blue.” “You’re an alien! Cool! What about Mr. Kraglin? Are you an alien too?” Violet looked at Kraglin hopefully. “Yeah, I sure am.” Kraglin smiled. “Violet? Oh sweetheart, don’t bother the nice men.” A woman wearing a yellow dress and white apron came over to the table. It was obvious she was Violet’s mother. They had the same skin and gorgeous hair. Yondu had recognized her. The woman was a waitress here. What was her name? It started with a C. Violet waved to her mother. The woman looked exhausted. No, not exhausted. The Terran female looked like she was ready to fall over at any given time. There were bags under her eyes, and Yondu could tell she had been on her feet for a long time. But despite this, she was smiling at the two aliens. Out of curiosity or because she had to be polite? He really couldn’t tell. “Mommy, I made new friends!” Violet said proudly. “I’m so sorry,” The woman smiled at Yondu weakly. “I don’t have a babysitter, so she has to come with me to work and–” “Oh don’t apologize. Violet is a delight, ain’t she Kraglin?” Kraglin nodded. “Is this your momma Violet?” “Yeah,” Violet nodded. “Should have figured. She’s as pretty as you,” Yondu looked back at the other woman. “It’s no biggy. She’s not bothering us.” “Are you sure?” “Positive Miss,” Yondu looked at her nametag. “Cora. Violet, I’ve got a story for you. Do you know the human who calls himself Star Lord?” “Yeah! He’s a hero and a–a—garden of the galaxy.” “A guardian of the galaxy,” Yondu chuckled. “Well, would you believe me if I told you that I taught him everything he knows?” “No way!” “Yes, way. See, when he was little, he was on my ship, and I taught him how to shoot a laser.” Cora smiled as Yondu began the story. Yondu glanced up at her and winked at her. Cora’s smile grew, and she headed back to work. For hours, Yondu told Violet tales about his life as a Ravager. Intently, the little girl listened, holding her doll and staring at Yondu with her bright eyes. She hung on every word, only stopping him to ask questions. She had a lot to ask for the two aliens. For instance, she wanted to know where they went to the bathroom, what they ate and if they had My Little Ponies in space. “Violet, it’s time to head on home.” “Can’t I stay here and talk with Mr. Yondu and Mr. Kraglin?” She asked hopefully. “No sweetheart. It’s late, we have to go home,” Cora said. “But if they come back tomorrow, you can talk to them then.” “Awwww,” Violet pouted. “I wish I could stay.” “Listen to yer mama Violet,” Yondu grinned. “You need your sleep. And in the morning, when you come with your mama, we’ll be here. You can even bring some of your ponies to show us.” “Okay! I’ll bring all my ponies, and I’ll introduce you to them!” Violet smiled as she got up from the table. “Night Yondu! Night Kraglin!”
Yondu and Kraglin waved goodbye to the young girl. “Cute kid.” Kraglin smiled. “Yeah. Goddamn adorable.”
Yondu and Kraglin went to the same diner every single day for weeks. Violet was thrilled. She was overjoyed at someone to talk to. It also seemed to be a big relief to Cora. The poor woman was overworked by the looks of it, and on top of it all, she had a daughter to raise. Yondu had no problem keeping an eye on Violet. In fact, he made his visits much more interesting. “This is Rainbow Dash, she’s a pegasus!” Violet held up the blue horse. “She’s super fast and has rainbow hair! And this is Fluttershy! She’s also a pegasus, but she’s shy and likes to talk to animals.” “Huh. Rainbow Dosh and Flutterwhy?” Yondu asked. “No!” Violet giggled. “Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy!” “Ah, you’re right,” Yondu hit himself on the head playfully. “I’m so silly!” “What’s this horsey’s name?” Kraglin pointed to a white one. “That’s Rarity! She’s a unicorn, and she’s fashionable!” Violet explained. “Spike has a crush on her. Spike’s a dragon, but he’s Twilight’s best friend.” “You sure know a lot about ponies,” Kraglin picked up another one. “You wanna learn to ride them one day?” “Yeah,” Violet said. “I want a pony one day, but I have to wait because Mommy doesn’t have enough money for a pony. She works really hard, but most of that money goes to stuff like bills and school. I wish I didn’t have to go. School is boring, and it’s filled with smelly boys.” “Boys can indeed be smelly,” Yondu mused. “Violet, where’s your daddy at?” “I don’t like my Daddy. He’s a buttface!” Violet declared. “A buttface? Well, that isn’t nice.” Kraglin said. “Yeah but he’s not a nice person,” Violet continued. “Daddies are supposed to be kind to their wives and their daughters, but my daddy isn’t. He yelled at Mommy, pulled her hair, pushed her down and he even hit her. So I hit him back.” “You defended your mother,” Yondu grinned slightly. “You sure are brave!” “Am I?” Violet asked. “Like you?” “I think you’re braver than I am sugar,” Yondu patted her head. “Now, let’s get back to your ponies.” For a while, things were fine. Cora slowly became more comfortable about Yondu and Kraglin. On good days, she’d slip them a slice of free pie. She would even talk to them, explaining about how she was trying to go back to college, some Earth invention. Cora was studying to be a nurse. Working at the dinner was just a means to an end. Yondu had jokingly suggested she become a Ravager, making her laugh. Violet said she wouldn’t mind living in a spaceship as long as she could bring her ponies. There were times where Violet would fall asleep on Yondu’s lap, and he would carefully pick her up to take her to Cora’s car. Violet would talk and talk, not wanting to stop even if she was tired. Yondu could always tell when the young girl was ready to collapse. But she would talk until she closed her eyes and slumped over against him. Kraglin teased Yondu about being a big softie, but the first mate adored the little girl as much as Yondu did. Kraglin let Violet paint his nails, commenting on how talented she was. It was a charmed life. Until one day. “Violet?” Cora looked behind the counter. “Violet? Honey, where are you?” Yondu watched as Cora searched for her daughter. Violet hadn’t been waiting for him and Kraglin, so he already knew something was up. Cora looked more frazzled than usual. Her eyes searched the diner, her face filled with dread. Yondu glanced at Kraglin before approaching Cora. “Miss Cora, is everything alright?” He asked. “Oh, Yondu! Have you seen Violet? I can’t find her!” Cora began. “She was sitting over there in that booth, but when I came back from the kitchen, she was gone!” “Did you try checking the bathroom?” Yondu suggested. “I didn’t! That’s a good idea!” Cora gave him a weak smile before heading to the bathroom. “Boss?” “Yeah, I know. I think she’s just in the can. She’ll be–”
A scream caused Yondu to jump slightly. Both he and Kraglin ran to the bathroom. Cora was on her knees, rocking back and forth. She was holding something. Yondu joined her, holding her. She looked at him, tears running down her face. The item in her hand was Violet’s Raggedy Ann doll. The head had been torn off. “He took her,” Cora said between cries. “Oh my god, he took my baby.” “Miss Cora, can you use your words?” “He found us! My ex-husband! He found out where I worked and he took Violet! Oh god, what will he do to her? What if he—” “Now, now, now,” Yondu stopped her. “Listen, there is no need to get yourself worked up. Me and Kraglin will take care of this for you. We’ll get Violet back. You just tell me his name, and I’ll find him. I promise.” “No, I can’t ask you to do that.” “You’re not asking,” Yondu helped her up. “You go sit down, and we’ll deal with your nasty ex. Alright?”
“Come out from under the bed Violet.”
“NO!” Violet was scrunched up beneath the bed in the hotel room. In one hand, she was clutching a pair of scissors she had found in one of the drawers. Despite her father’s kind face, she knew it was dumb to trust him. Already, he had hit her. Her lip was busted thanks to him. Glaring at him, she tightened her grip on the scissors. It was the only way she could defend herself. Her father had already slapped her, and her face still stung from his hand. “Sweetie, please.” “Don’t call me sweetie!” She growled. “Honey, I”m trying very hard to be sweet,” He reached towards her. “Don’t you want to be a family again?” “Not with you!” Violet spat. “You hurt mommy! You said you were going to get better and you lied! I hate you and wish you would just die!” Her father’s eyes turned dark. For a second, Violet was scared. But she remembered that Yondu had called her brave. She was just like him. Her father reached again, trying to get to her but then there was a knock at the door. “Go away please!” Her father called. Another knock came, this one louder and more forceful. Growling, her father got up. Violet waited a second before scooting closer towards the edge of the bed. Then was a loud boom as the door was opened and Violet heard a familiar voice. “Yondu?” She asked. Feet appeared in the room. Violet was silent until she saw Yondu’s face. Smiling, she crawled out from under the bed. She dropped the scissors as she wrapped her arms around the alien’s neck. Yondu picked her up, holding her tightly. Violet sniffled a bit, but she didn’t want to cry. Brave people didn’t cry. She wasn’t really sad. If anything, she was happy that someone had come to save her. Yondu looked at her. “Are you alright?” He asked, looking at her lip. Violet nodded. Yondu went into the other room. Kraglin had a strange weapon pointed at Violet’s father. He looked over to Violet who hid her face in the crook of Yondu’s neck. She didn’t want to look at her terrible, awful good for nothing dad. Instead, she just clung to Yondu for dear life. “Where are you taking my daughter?” Yondu placed Violet down. She shivered and a tear rolled down her face, but Kraglin quickly picked her up. Like with Yondu, she clung to the other alien. Yondu opened up his jacket. With a sharp whistle, his famous Yaka arrow floated to his side. Violet watched the silver weapon hover in the air. Her father wasn’t as impressed as she was. Instead, he was giving Yondu a death glare. “You can’t have my Violet, and you can’t have my Cora!” Her father shouted. Another whistle and the arrow pierced her father’s hand. He shouted out in pain as Yondu grabbed the other by the neck. “Listen to me and listen to me well asshole,” Yondu’s voice was low. ‘If I ever hear about you bothering this sweet, little angel or her mama, I will tear your asshole out through your nose. You’ll never see them again, got it?” “They’re mine.” Was all Violet’s father got out. There was another whistle. Violet watched as her father screamed in agony as Yondu’s arrow went through his hand. She closed her eyes, not wanting to see the blood. She heard the screams, and she could deal with that. She couldn’t deal with the blood. “You do not own them. You will never own them. Heed my warning, or you’re a dead man. Let’s go Kraglin.”
Violet woke up, but she wasn’t in her bedroom. Instead, she had woken up in a hospital room. Her Raggedy Ann doll was in bed next to her. Someone had sewn her head back onto her body. Violet pulled it closer to her, smiling. Sitting in the chair across from her was her mother who was asleep. But Violet didn’t see Yondu or Kraglin. She stood up and looked around the room. She found a note on the bedside table along with a box wrapped in pink wrapping paper. Violet’s name was on the letter, so she opened it. Dear Violet, Me and Kraglin went to make sure your papa doesn’t come back to bother you and your ma. You did a really brave thing, standing up to him and I’m pretty proud of you. You’re the bravest person I know. I have some business to attend too, but I promise you that we’ll be back. There is something in the box for your mama. It’s in an envelope. Take care of your new friend and be good to your mama. Yondu Violet was confused, but she opened up the box. She smiled when she saw a brand new Princess Celestia doll. Then, she reached in and took out of the envelope. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she looked inside it. It was filled with money. A lot of money. Smiling, she closed the envelope and went to find her mother. Yondu was her favorite hero, Violet decided. And when he got back, she was going to show him all her new ponies.

One Piece 30 day challenge answers
1. When did you first watch One Piece? 2004 with the 4kids dub.
2. How did you find out about One Piece? Caught it on Fox Box with the 4kids dub.
3. What got me hooked on the show? I thought Zoro was cool so I kept watching. I'd say the dramatic stakes of the Kuro arc hooked me.
4. Favorite Straw Hat? Why? Usopp for being relatable and beautifully likeable. As for how I feel on the rest of them, a favorites to least favorite list would look something like this.
Usopp Zoro Brook Luffy Chopper Robin Sanji Franky Nami Jinbe
5. Favorite Marine? Why? Garp. He's a cool dude. Not much more to say aside from that he's fun.
6. Favorite Overall character? Why? Uh... Lets not pick Usopp again. I'd say Whitebeard is my favorite non-Straw Hat Pirate. Despite his presence, which emits power at every moment, the kindness in his heart is admirable. Treating his crew and their allies as though they were his own children, calling them sons and daughters, and proving himself by protecting them at all costs, annihilating anyone who hurts them, and dying for them is astonishing.
I won't lie. When Squard stabbed Whitebeard through the chest due to Akainu's manipulation, and Whitebeard's response was to toss his weapon aside, embrace Squard, and simply say "My foolish son. What have they done to you?" I cried a little. This was the moment that showed me Whitebeard was far more than a stock standard badass old guy.
As for a top 5 One Piece characters list, it would look something like this for me.
1. Usopp 2. Whitebeard 3. Charlotte Katakuri 4. Doctor Hiruluk 5. BIG NEWS MORGAN!!! (I'm not kidding)
7. Favorite Scene? What makes it special? Saying goodbye to Vivi silently with the X-tattoos. It felt like a series finale-level scene and a beautiful sendoff to two of the best characters in the series.
Top 5 scenes in One Piece for me...
1. Goodbye Vivi 2. Zoro's sacrifice for Luffy at the end of Thriller Bark. 3.Luffy defeats Crocodile 4. "Say you want to live" scene at Enies Lobby 5. "To the Sea!" at the end of Enies Lobby
8. Most disliked character? Why? At first I immediately said the World Nobles, but now that I thought about it, Flampe. She's just such a disgusting person. All of her love for her brother, Katakuri, turns to disgust when he reveals his face to her. How shallow. The World Nobles at least have the excuse of being raised to think the way they do. If anything, the Charlotte Family and Big Mom Pirates value each other and accept all people regardless of appearance. There's no excuse for this behavior!
Another top 5 list for most hated characters!
1. Flampe 2. World Nobles in general (If you want a specific example, Saint Charloss) 3. Hody Jones 4. Jack 5. Spandam (He isn't any higher because he was at least funny despite being a repugnant excuse for a human being).
9. Favorite arc? Enies Lobby.
Best to worst arcs now~!
Enies Lobby arc Marineford arc Alabasta arc Water 7 arc (Including the Sea Train parts between Water 7 and Enies Lobby because I'm too lazy to account for that as its own arc) Impel Down arc Sabaody Archipelago arc Arlong arc Whole Cake Island arc Thriller Bark arc Reverie arc Zou arc Fishman Island arc Wano arc (so far) Skypiea arc Return to Sabaody arc/Straw Hat Reunion arc Baratie arc Drum Island arc Jaya arc Loguetown arc Whiskey Peak Dressrosa arc Post-War arc/Post-Marineford arc Romance Dawn Punk Hazard arc Post-Enies Lobby arc/Return to Water 7 arc Little Garden Longring Longland arc/Davy Back Fight arc (in the manga) Amazon Lily arc Syrup Village + Gaimon Orange Town Davy Back Fight arc (in the anime due to filler and cutting out Aokiji for later)
10. Favorite Island? Fishman Island.
11. Favorite Female character? Nico Robin.
12. Favorite Male character? Lets not count Katakuri, Whitebeard, or Usopp again. Uhh... Chopper. Hard for me to watch him without a smile on my face.
13. Favorite Scene? This was already #7, you dumbasses! (talking to the people who made this challenge)
Ugh... lets count a different scene. My SECOND favorite scene is the "jumping into the ocean" at the end of Enies Lobby.
14. Saddest scene? Going Merry's funeral (followed by Pound's death and Robin's flashback).
Again, warrants a top 5.
1. Going Merry's funeral 2. Robin after the Ohara massacre 3. Rumbar Pirates sing Binks Sake while dying 4. Usopp leaves the crew 5. Hiruluk's detah
15. Funniest scene? Uhh... God Usopp was pretty legendary. I'll tentatively pick that.
Top 5 again
1. God Usopp 2. Impel Down prisoners worship Buggy and assume he's an overpowered badass because he used to be on Gold Roger's crew with Shanks 3. Sanji's wanted poster 4. Everyone mistaking Kaku for Usopp 5. Franky's bawling his eyes out when he hears Usopp talk about how he left the crew over a fight with Luffy.
16. What to do to hook someone to the show? So far just watching it with them has worked on the 3 or 4 friends I've tried it on.
17. Favorite Straw Hat fight?
Straw Hat Pirates vs Oars + Moria.
Top 5 Straw Hat Fights
1. Straw Hat Pirates vs Oars + Moria 2. Luffy vs Katakuri 3. Luffy vs Rob Lucci 4. Luffy vs Usopp 5. Zoro vs Mr.1
18. Favorite non-major character fight?
Uh... I'll just assume they mean non-Straw Hat Pirate fight. In that case... Ace vs Blackbeard.
19. Favorite Straw Hat Ally?
Tough one. I'll go with Bartolomeo for being a One Piece equivalent of myself.
Top 5 again again!
1. Bartolomeo 2. Silvers Rayleigh 3. Vivi + Karoo 4. Impel Down escapees 5. Galley-La company
20. Favorite Opening Song? Fight Together.
From best to worst again!
Fight Together Hope Share the World Wake Up Brand New World Kokoro no Chizu Hard Knock Days We Are *Remix* Bon Voyage Superpowers We Are Hands Up We Go Kaze wo Sagashite Jungle P Crazy Rainbow Star Hikari E One Day Believe We Can
21. Favorite Ending Song? Dear Friend, followed closely by Eternal Pose and whatever the ED in Alabasta arc with the Straw Hat Pirates + Vivi in the desert was called.
22. Favorite Devil Fruit? Uh... tough one. I'll go with Marco's as of yet unnamed Phoenix fruit.
23. Favorite Devil Fruit type? Paramecia is the most varied one, so that.
24. Favorite Jolly Roger? Usopp Pirate Flag.
25. Least Favorite Arc? Refer to the list above.
26. Favorite Straw Hat Sibling? What kind of question is this? Only three have siblings, and Sanji's siblings are horribly unlikable except Reiju.
I guess I'll have to go with Nojiko.
27. Favorite Straw Hat Parent? Doctor Hiruluk.
28. Favorite D? Um... probably Luffy.
Again, worst to best.
Monkey D. Luffy Portgas D. Ace Monkey D. Garp Marshall D. Teach Jaguar D. Saul Trafalgar D. Water Law Portgas D. Rouge Gol D. Roger
29. Favorite One Piece species? Kung-Fu Dugongs.
30. Favorite thing about One Piece? The themes of finding family from people you meet out in the world and becoming closer to them than you ever dreamed, and doing everything to protect those people.
Revamped from the first time now that I had more time to think about it. Mostly the same stuff though.

Day 10 - Magic Kingdom (II)
TLDR: Breakfast at hotel for a second shot, then pool for a bit. Headed to Disney Springs and picked up some artwork and not much else. Then finally on to Magic Kingdom to hit a few of the rides we missed the first day including Pirates, Buzz Light-year and Space Mountain. Ate monstrous turkey legs. Got lots of memory maker photos. Stayed until the 4th July (but not really the 4th of July fireworks). Spectacular!
We woke up a little later than normal and hit breakfast at the hotel and then an hour at the pool before heading out to our first stop, Disney Springs. First stop was an art shop that stocked some prints from an artist I like - Jasmine Beckett-Griffith. I picked up a 10x8 print and a set of Oracle cards, really for the artwork (though if you want a reading, hit me up :P). Kudos to Ann for letting me indulge in the weird things I like (no, not like that ;) For the past 11 days its been cards, art-y stuff and my unnatural obsession for Harley Quinn... thus far. Next a standard Starbucks stop (though they looked at me funny when I wanted no cream and sugar in my cold brew), then to browse the t-shirts in the Harley Davidson (we were here for more than just me, honest). Popped into another few shops including Marvel, before getting back on the road to head to Magic Kingdom. The 4th of July is one of the busiest days in Disney due to the holidays but a little known secret is that they do a trial run of the Independence days fireworks on the 3rd, so that's what our plan was for the rest of the day.
Before we continue, I'd like to present you with Patricks Fun Fact Of The Day, two in fact to make up for yesterday (and the first is a shark related one so quite fitting too).
Fun Fact 1: More people are killed by bees and lightning every year than are killed by sharks.
Fun Fact 2: Sporange is the only word that rhymes with orange - it means part of a fern or something (though technically it has the word orange in it so its a wee bit cheating).
Now we had to visit Lost & Found prior to heading into Magic Kingdom as Ann lost her special edition Magic Band on Saturday at Animal Kingdom. It was actually found and returned to the Lost & Found office which was at Magic Kingdoms car park - so that worked out really well. We got to the park as soon as the parade had started which was great timing (even though we seen it before), this was in main street so the kids had a much better field of view. They even got to interact and high five with a few of the Disney characters as they passed. I was too busy photographing the Disney characters to get their reactions but if we happen to do it again, when were next at Magic Kingdom, Ill definitely turn the camera the other way. I’m pretty sure Merida recognized our Celtic strips amidst the crowd and blew me a kiss, ohhhh and Elsa winked at me too, obviously I’m not looking into that meaning anything whatsoever (even though it does :P)

And then it started to rain, and wouldn't you know it, due to the fact there was only a 20% chance of rain we didn't take the bag with the rain-jackets in. Oh well, the rain wasnt actually that bad at all and we per served with it. We had Splash Mountain Fast Passed but they shut it down due to poor weather (as they do with all outdoor type rides). They do offer some alternatives so we headed to Haunted Mansion instead.

Next was a ride we hadn't seen since 2013, Pirates of The Caribbean. We'd watched all the movies prior to coming over (well except the new one out in the cinema), so we were all pretty much clued up and excited. Nice wee boat ride through various sets all based around Pirates. They had a nice waterfall at the start which had different characters like Davy Jones and Blackbeard projected on it, which was a cool effect.

Left Pirates and a guys in a Cubs fan shouted 'Mon The Hoops as he walked by (as we were all wearing our Celtic kits). In fact we got a few 'Mon The Hoops and Hail Hails over the course of the day, even from peeps not from the UK which was nice.
We were hungy by that point and there was really only one thing most of us wanted - Turkey Legs! These were like mutant turkey legs though and even wee Robert the fussy one said he wouldnt mind getting one for himself. So we made out way over to the opposite end of the park in Tomorrow Land where we knew we could get them. The trouble was, the weather also means all of the smaller stalls were closed down too - DOH! So we asked a cast member if there was anywhere else that sold them. Yes she said, Tortuga Tavern she said. And where is Tortuga Tavern I hear you ask? Why its directed opposite from Pirates - where we just came from! Trekked back over to the other side of the park and finally managed to get some, plus a cookie as Grace wasnt that hungry. These things are massive and it makes me wonder what the actual size of the turkeys where to have produced such huge legs! Im sure there's an answer (Patrick if you're reading this, can you go find out? THX ; ).
The rain had stopped by that point which meant that the Fireworks would definitely be on, there were even people settling down at a good spot at that time which was 2hrs before the show was due to start. Eek, what people would do for a photo, eh? Haha ;) Then we made our way back over to Tomorrow Land (yeah, I know, right?), after stopping to get a quick pic with a park photographer. In fact, we got quite a few photographs taken tonight using our memory maker, so here they are...

So first up in Tomorrow Land was Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Our third shooting game since we got here. Shoot the aliens and stop Zurg, getting points along the way. If you've been following along, you'll know how this is likely to end, but here are the scores on the doors...
Gerry:  134900
Robert: 32500
Patrick: 29700
Ann: 29600
Gracie:  6600

Carousel Of Progress after that and although Gracie had done this before she couldn't remember it so she was asking lots of questions, which is normally a good thing but probably not when the animatronic puppets are they only other others speaking to the rest of the people on the ride! Although this is a new shiny ride, its still a really good one and gives a glimpse of how life has developed throughout the ages and to the future, which as Patrick pointed out, is mostly a reality now! Im not sure if this ride is adapted to current technological trends or if Walt Disney was spot on with forecasting the future!

And now the one Robert had been waiting for, Space mountain, the last of the big 3 mountains we had to ride this time around. It was me, Patrick and Robert on this one. This was one of Patrick’s favourites but Robert was so keen on it last time - I have a feeling he might feel a little different now. A roller coaster in the dark, and although doesn’t have any major drops, has lots of sharp (and unexpected) turns - really fun ride. I asked Robert once we finished what he thought and he said - It was easy! Haha, how times have changed.

Speedway next and the boys were tall enough to go on their own, but though it best to go in front of both in case they got over excited with the accelerator. After a few more memory maker photos which I posted above already, we got a spot to watch the trial 4th of July fireworks. It was pretty majestic and patriotic (well for Americans that is, but you cant help youself get caught up). Probably one of the best fireworks shows Ive seen even if we didnt have the best viewpoint (which was behind the castle).

We had Fast Passed Seven Dwarves but the the FP queue was LOOONG and the kids were getting really tired at that point. Headed out of the park just as another show was starting but we reaffirmed our decision to call it a day.
Now we ordered Gracie a Furbacca (Star Wars Chewbacca Furby) and we received a notification it had been delivered to the hotel (that 30 day Amazon.com Prime trial came in handy). One small problem though, the office which handles deliveries was closed until tomorrow morning, so that will be something we'll have to do first thing, which will keep Grace happy as she wont stop talking about it. Shopping day tomorrow and anticipating BIG sales and deals due to the holidays. Goodbye bank balance! :P
