“- commenting on the movie: the differences from the books, how well each of the actors ages and, of course; how vitally important Dame Maggie Smith is, not just to film, but the world at large.”
Lilah Suzanne absolutely gets it! Everything is immediately improved by the existence of Maggie Smith

Any music related books? Like band, musical or anything. Preferably with bi mc please
Sure, there's this whole section in Romance on the site posted below, and I'd also really highly recommend It Goes Like This by Miel Moreland (which does have a bi MC among the cast) and mention the new K-PoP thriller Gorgeous Gruesome Faces by Linda Cheng. There are also three country music YAs to have on your radar: A Little Bit Country by Brian D. Kennedy, The Last Love Song by Kalie Holford, and Every Time You Hear That Song by Jenna Voris (bi protag) - the latter two come out in April. Oh, and I also recommend Phil Stamper's As Far As You'll Take Me, which stars an oboe player.
As for these, more probably have bi protags than what I marked with Bs, but at least those certainly do.

I saw your acofaf post about enby romances and I am always a slut for giving out book recs so I hope some of these help! The only historical romance with a possible enby protag is Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian (reviews of this one have always confused me as to whether the MC is enby or not). Otherwise, there's Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly, Jilted by Lilah Suzanne, Christmas Inn Maine by Chelsea M. Cameron, and Nine of Swords, Reversed by Xan West! The only one I can personally vouch for is Love & Other Disasters, but I've heard great things about the other authors/books!
Anon, thank you so much for all the recommendations! Truly appreciate you takin the time to send them my way. I'll definitely look into these.

Six Contemporary Romance Books for Pan Visibility Day
Tumblr media
For Pan Visibility Day here are some contemporary romance books featuring pan characters. (For content notes please check my account on StoryGraph.)
A Brighter, Darker Art by Halli Starling, a companion to Ask for Fire but stands alone, is a novel that also has the arts at its heart. Raphael (gay) is stressing over the preparation to open his newest and final art gallery in coastal California among needing to hire someone for the promotion. Silvan (pansexual) was just downsized from the marketing agency he’d spent years at expecting to make partner. So, it’s serendipitous when stopping for a drink at a retro club the two meet. Except how should they go about a boss and employee relationship when the sparks between them are in no way dying down?
An emotional novella for believing in first love and second chances is Handmade with Love by Rachel Bowdler. Stevie (pansexual) has been trying to hold it all together keeping afloat her small giftshop selling crafts made of items scavenged from the Welsh seaside while helping care for an ailing father. So, the last thing she expected is a recent bylaw making beachcombing illegal or the woman responsible. Anna left the coastal village she grew up in behind years ago. Yet now the job offer to be a policy and development advisor for the village council wasn’t one she could pass up. Even if it means being back close to her toxic mother. Or facing Stevie whose heart Anna broke after breaking things off with her too. Author Rachel Bowdler is also pansexual.
A novel for K-drama fans is Heart and Seoul by Erin Kinsella. Tessa (panromantic demisexual) hasn’t visited South Korea since a trip as a toddler with her grandmother. So, it’s exciting when now as a successful Canadian author Tessa gets the chance to go back since one of her books is set to be adapted into a drama filmed in Seoul and Busan. Pop idol Eun Gi (bisexual) is hoping his first acting role being cast as the leading man will help the ennui he’s been experiencing over his music career, despite the other guys in his group (including the pan Min Jae) being a found family. However, neither Tessa or Eun Gi was expecting a series of innocent mishaps between them to get blown up by the media. Or the ridiculous extents the company would go to in avoiding a scandal. Author Erin Kinsella is also panromantic.
Jilted by Lilah Suzanne is a novella where some unpleasant surprises in life may turn out to be life-changing in a good way after all. Carter (bisexual) thought he’d be enjoying a romantic time in beautiful New Orleans before Mardi Gras. Until his fiancé in dramatic fashion interrupts a wedding and takes off with an ex-girlfriend who was but mere steps from marrying Link (nonbinary pansexual queer). Abandoned and needing more than to drown their feelings in alcohol at the hotel bar, Carter and Link decide to keep each other company during the already paid for planned honeymoon week.
The first in the Haven Hills series is New Tricks by J.D. Light where small town doesn’t mean small-minded. After an incident lead to being horribly fired and run out by the new owner of the ranch Jefferson (gay) grew up on he finds himself in an unfamiliar town hundreds of miles away. Luckily, he’s noticed by Byrum (bi/pan) a ranch owner who takes him in and offers him a job. Both closeted and attracted to the other, it’s the start of something more too.
Set in Halifax the novella Stop and Stare by Katia Rose features university students Marina (pansexual) a political science major and Iz (nonbinary) a lacrosse player who have been friends practically forever. That is until a new year’s kiss. Both have been pinning after each other. But going from friends to lovers is complicated too when history and having any kind of relationship at all is on the line.

My Review
5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a Phenomenal read! I just can’t get enough of this series. This had an action packed plot, full of twists, turns, murders and suspense, that will keep you on the edge of your seat, unable to stop reading, because you have to know what or who may be next in this latest thriller by Lisa Renee Jones.
With another killer on the loose Lilah’s latest case becomes a little to close to home when the victim is someone she has been working with to bring down The Society, a secret group with deep political ties, and who have infiltrated into some of the highest positions of power in law enforcement.
As Lilah tries to figure out not only if her or others close to her are in danger, she can’t help but be suspicious of everyone and everything. And that brings out the best of Lilah Love’s attributes as in her snarky, anti-social, distrustful, foul mouthed, and confrontational attitude and she brings it out in spades. So why is the killer targeting powerful people? Could it simply be for sport? Or is it personal? Or for Revenge? And is it someone she knows? You will need to read to get all the juicy details! Can’t wait for the next in this series!!
I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

Say it in a Song: Writing Lessons From Country Music
When I started writing a book series about country musicians in Nashville, I did not expect to gain a new appreciation for the genre—the music, the artistry, the emotional pull of a country tune—that enriched the stories and the lives of my characters. But it wasn’t just the characters and their world that bled into my own reality; I also learned surprising things about craft and how to tell a tight, emotional story without a lot of fluff and filler. Country music is chock-full of storytelling songs, that is, lyrics that act as a narrative. A country song can tell a full, rich story in three minutes, and there is a lot any author can learn from that.
“Harper Valley PTA” (written by Tom C. Hall and famously performed by both Jeannie C. Riley and Dolly Parton) starts off with: “I want to tell you a story…” and then we’re told of a widowed mother shamed by the local small-town PTA for her short skirts and scandalous behavior, how this effects her daughter and how Ms. Johnson then lays the smack-down on the Harper Valley PTA hypocrites. An entire story arc of hook, rising action, climax, and resolution in a mere three hundred and twenty four words. Similarly, “A Boy Named Sue” tells a tale of abandonment, ridicule, and revenge. In “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” we’re told about the time a soul-snatching Satan was thwarted by some killer fiddle playing. So how is it that a song can fit a story within such a limited space? And how does that storytelling style translate to novel writing?
Keep it simple: The age old advice is still kicking around for a reason. As a story unfolds, it’s tempting to pile on the ideas. We fall in love with new minor characters, new themes emerge, backstories get more complex, one idea spawns another spawns another spawns another… But doing too much can detract from the story. Country music songs illustrate how to pick one story thread and keep with it, instead of allowing the narrative to spiral out in infinite directions. In “Harper Valley PTA” we stick with Ms. Johnson’s journey; despite the title it’s not about the members of the PTA, or even her daughter, it’s really about her.
Utilize metaphors and symbolism: Sometimes a story calls for lengthy descriptions and background exposition, but often times, using metaphors and symbolism can say a lot by saying something else. “A Boy Named Sue” tell us explicitly: “My daddy left home when I was three, didn’t leave much to ma and me.” and then uses imagery to flesh this out in only a few words: “Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.” We can infer quite a bit about a man who left his wife and child, with only an old guitar and empty booze bottle to remember him by without spending too much time dwelling on it.
Stick to a central theme: If plot is what the story is about, theme is what your story means. “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” uses a deal with the devil motif, concerning itself with the morals and virtues of our fiddle-playing hero Johnny: By staying true to himself and his values, he defeats the devil and retains his soul. Keeping a story’s central theme in mind gives it complexity without adding more baggage to the plot.
Watch filler words: We all have our favorites that we constantly use without realizing it. I overuse “just” and in a recent editing pass it felt like I had to remove a character “hopping down” from something every other scene she was in. If you’re writing a story that needs to be told in the length of a single song, you’re going to watch those filler words. Similarly, in writing a book it’s important to pay attention the words that (just) don’t need to be there.
Portray human experiences. If a story speaks to a universal human experience, then you can count on a built-in reader response. Perhaps not everyone has been publicly shamed by a small town PTA, but we can all relate to not fitting in. We haven’t all been abandoned by a cruel father, but certainly can understand the feeling of left behind or unwanted. And maybe we haven’t actually had to battle the devil via fiddle showdown to save our mortal souls, but certainly we’ve all wrestled with moral dilemmas a time or two. Of course I’m not a songwriter, despite creating county music singer-songwriter characters. I got help from an actual songwriter for the songs I created in the books, and it takes me quite a bit a longer than a few dozen stanzas to weave a cohesive tale. But I do think trying my hand at songwriting and immersing myself in the word of someone who does has made me a better writer. If nothing else, it helped me to think about what I’m saying, how I’m saying, and how long it takes me to get there.

Book Review: Tack and Jibe by Lilah Suzanne
Tumblr media
Rating: ★★★½☆
Blurb: Willa has a picture-perfect life: living in a sea-side cottage, working at a sailing store, and running a hugely popular sailing Instagram. It’s so convincing that her online followers register her to compete in a televised sailing championship. Too bad Willa doesn’t actually know how to sail.
Desperate to protect her carefully curated life, Willa tracks down local sailing champion Lane Cordova, and begs her for a crash course in sailing before the race begins. But Lane’s mastery of the water is matched only by Willa’s ineptitude—and her growing crush on Lane isn’t helping matters. As the competition threatens to go awry, Willa tries to save her reputation from sinking while taking a chance on love.
I had high hopes for this book, because I love Jilted, also by Lilah Suzanne. And this book is good. It's chock full of queer characters: a bisexual main character and her lesbian love interest, her fluid best friend and her love interest, best friend's two moms, probably more that I've forgotten...
The main character has really deep-seated flaws—not just problems in her life that she needs to overcome, or a supposed character flaw that's only there to keep the romance from progressing too fast. She's impulsive and a liar and incredibly insecure, and it's not easy for her to start changing that! And like Lilah Suzanne’s other books, this book doesn't just stop once the book's premise has played itself out. The central conceit, that Willa has lied about knowing how to sail and needs to learn how (from Lane) before the race begins, is only half the book. Lilah Suzanne never leaves it there, their books always deal with the aftermath, the ripple effect, because in these books, that's where the real changes for the characters happen.
In some ways, that makes the structure of the book weird. What would have been the ultimate climax in another book is, in this one, just a particularly intense scene 2/3 through, and the rest of the story unspools loosely: more important, but less interesting. It may be more realistic that the aftermath is kinda slow and meandering, but it's unusual for a book to have such a lull before ending.

Free Story - As The Years Go By
Tumblr media
When the boy next door falls for the boy next door… Gus Hoffman has been best friends with Leo Westley for most of his life, and in love with him for almost as long. As Gus and Leo grow and change through the years, their feelings for each other grow deeper— and more complicated. Gus is sure that they’ll end up spending their lives together, as friends or maybe something more, but when their paths split into different directions as adults everything comes crumbling down. Estranged for years, Leo and Gus come back into each other’s lives after a near-tragedy, and it becomes clear that Gus’s still-lingering attraction to Leo isn’t just one sided. But will giving in to physical desire ruin any chance at rebuilding their life-long friendship, or could this finally be Gus and Leo’s chance at happily ever after?

Celebrating Bisexual Awareness with Books: “Broken Records” by Lilah Suzanne 💗💜💙
Los Angeles-based stylist Nico Takahashi loves his job—or at least, he used to. Feeling fed up and exhausted from the cutthroat, gossip-fueled business of Hollywood, Nico daydreams about packing it all in and leaving for good. So when Grady Dawson—sexy country music star and rumored playboy—asks Nico to style him, Nico is reluctant. But after styling a career-changing photo-shoot, Nico follows Grady to Nashville where he finds it increasingly difficult to resist Grady’s charms. Can Nico make peace with show business and all its trappings, or will Grady’s public persona get in the way of their private attraction to each other?
