A/N: A lil final (late) Halloween gift for @jmathesonandsiblings.

Donna Amato had always suspected one or more of Nonno’s patrons may be a succubi or incubi, now she was sure of it. It was, she had to admit, hard to keep herself under control, many of the patrons and staff, in many variations, had either lost their costumes entirely, or found intriguing ways to gain access to what they wanted. Gina, her sister, was not so much in control of herself, not that Donna minded too much, Gina and Dino had excused themselves from the main diner to make use of the back office. Now, as she looked around again, she laughed a little. “Well, you did say you wanted a lively party…” “I did… but this is a little… more… than I expected.” Nonno’s laugh was soft, his lips brushing Donna’s ear lightly. “At least we’re well behaved… for now.” Later, over the next week, sheepish staff and patrons would be retrieving lost items of clothing, the majority of which had been underwear. Gina had been unsurprisingly absent since the party turned orgy, although Dino had still retrieved the lost items before apologizing to his brother and Donna.

Chapter 5 Summary:

Jennifer had slipped out a little notebook she liked to keep in her pocket for doodles and began to take note of the questions she had. As well as any little detail that stood out to her. The mechanical pencil she held patted her face absentmindedly as she gazed upon an old hung up news article featuring the diner in its heyday.

Unbeknownst in her avid focus, the closed red drapes of Pirate's Cove beside her fluttered a bit from a slight breeze. A tall figure hunched over to take a peek through the slightest sliver between the curtain and the wall at her. Their head tilted with a barely heard mechanical hiss. The light from the small opening was enough to reveal the old red faux fur and long canine acrylic teeth.

I have come across many brilliantly crafted metaphors in podcasts I listen to but few compare to this one from Midnight Burger, I think-

In year four of our mission, we had come upon a binary star system. I looked upon these two stars rotating around their barycenter and my thoughts turned to my wife. We were like these two stars, locked into an eternal dance only due to chance and gravity, unable to recall a moment where we chose each other and unable to escape this rotation. Knowing that to move closer would obliterate us both.

Maxine’s Diner in Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill (remastered) should be shut down. There are numerous health and safety hazards and Daryl is just the worst employee.

To start, the tables of the (mostly) empty diner haven’t been cleared. There’s legitimately no excuse for it, since Daryl clearly isn’t busy.

In fact he has plenty of opportunities to hit on Nancy despite her repeatedly telling him she has a boyfriend.

My personal favorite is when Nancy says he must have some “pretty special contacts” and he makes the above lame joke. Nancy is able to ask him to explain himself, which leads to an awkward explanation. This is the best way, incidentally, to make jerks telling inappropriate jokes uncomfortable. Just pretend you don’t get it and make them explain themselves. HeR teaching those useful life skills.

Then there’s the stove. It’s filthy and looks like it’s never been cleaned. Vegetables are just left hanging out on the counter as well. Nancy can see all this because she can just walk into the kitchen without a single comment from Daryl. This seems like a glaring health and safety issue, given all the ways someone could potentially injure themselves, not to mention the food that presumably will be served to customers.

Then the worst safety violation of them all:

The stove’s gas line is being held in place by a pair of bolt cutters and, later, a soup ladle. When Nancy removes the bolt cutters the kitchen immediately begins filling up with gas and failure to find something to replace them with results in death. The connection of the gas line seems so so weak that it is likely that, even with something holding it in place, gas is slowly leaking out.

What’s more, the presence of the bolt cutters at all shows that someone knows about the issue and has actively chosen not to fix it properly.

Maxine should be ashamed of herself. No wonder no one eats there, the food probably makes them sick.

A/N: The final part for the official Spooky Season In The Barrens by @jmathesonandsiblings,

Julietta Day has always been just a little more nervy than her best friend, Donna Amato. She’s always been aware that love is not going to be easy to find, but Judith Amato, a fully grown adult woman, someone Donna adopted, had surprised her with how openly she loved her. Donna had invited her over this evening to the annual Family bonfire. Bonfires used to be something she loathed, of course, loneliness in the dark was never fun, but then she isn’t alone anymore. Judith smiles and moves to greet her, kissing her softly before leading her over to the group, introducing the man Donna loved as simply ‘Nonno’ and laughing when Nonno winked at her, squeezing Julietta’s hand reassuringly. Gina Amato, Donna’s sister, is next, the pretty blonde is shy, as shy as ever but Julietta can’t help smiling as she greets her again, then the man Gina has been dating, had chosen as her life partner, Dino Leeds. Here, Julietta thinks, she is just another of the Amato family dates, welcomed and cared for, it’s nice. Peace falls as the family settles to watch the fire, Julietta relaxing and allowing her arms to curl around Judith. She is not alone now, she has a family, a group who welcomed her and chose to let her in. She is, at last, home.
