Some fun facts about Aldous Huxley (it’s his 125th birthday today and I know wayyy too much about him) - and I’m going to refer to him as Aldous for the entirety of this post so get ready:

- Only male student at his primary school. His mother founded the girl’s school known as Prior’s Field. When it was founded, his two older brothers were already in secondary school.

-Probably his mother’s favorite child. Aldous had a better relationship with her than with his father. She died on the day of Aldous’s Eton wall game, and he never got to say goodbye. (I think that strained relationship is demonstrated in Brave New World with John and his mother).

-So much sass as a child. Almost beat up another student on the playground when he was seven because she caught a cooler bug than he did. Thankfully his older brother stopped him from doing so.

-His wife, Maria Nys, was bisexual. Both she and Aldous had an affair with Mary Hutchinson, whom they met at Garsington Manor during the first World War. Before Aldous, Maria was in love with Lady Ottoline Morrell (who was the one who lived at Garsington and invited all these people over). The events and people that Aldous came into contact with at Garsington Manor are written into his first book, Crome Yellow (1921).

-*Accidentally* walked into a gay club one night with one of his friends. Danced a bit. (My friend, who is gay, said ‘it’s never an accident’ and I can’t stop thinking about that).

- Was a teacher at Eton for a while, but was absolutely terrible at it. He had a very difficult time being authoritative. There are accounts from students who said they’d take chalk and play noughts and crosses on one another’s sweater vests in the back of the classroom. He taught French, and George Orwell was one of his students.

-If you’ve never read The Doors of Perception it’s actually the funniest thing ever if you don’t take it seriously. Aldous thinks he’s a chair leg at one point.

- Loved to buy expensive cars and then modify them so he could fit in them. (Man is 6′4.5″ or 1.94 m - so no leg room usually). Only thing was, he couldn’t actually drive said expensive car because he went blind at the age of 16, so his wife gets to drive all these fancy, ridiculously expensive cars.

- His quote “to travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries”, which is normally put up on travel sites makes me laugh because in context it’s actually meant in a negative way. Aldous had terrible experiences traveling. He almost got shot in Mexico and those fancy cars I was telling you about? One of them got broken into and smashed in India. He wasn’t a fan of Japan either.

- He wrote one children’s book - “The Crows of Pearblossom”, which was written for his niece, Olivia de Haulleville, Christmas 1944. She was around five at the time, and having a difficult time adjusting to her new baby brother, so she spent a lot of time with Aldous and Maria at their home in Llano. The first manuscript burned along with the Huxley’s home in Llano in 1961 - quite strangely, an interview with him in 1947 asks about his feelings if his home burned down. Fortunately, their neighbors had a copy. There are two illustrated versions of it available - one by Barbara Cooney (1967), and one by Sophie Blackall (2011). There’s a cute video with Olivia on YouTube (I’m not sure if it’s still up) where she explains the story.

- One of his favorite hobbies was mountain climbing. It was a favorite hobby of all the Huxley brothers.

- Most of the scientific (and absolutely awful social) ideas of Brave New World were actually from his older brother, Julius Huxley, who was a biologist and one of the founders of the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and UNESCO.

- Wrote the original script for Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. It was scrapped because it was “too literary” but boy that would’ve been a trip.

-Applied for US Citizenship at one point but on the section where it said “would you fight for your country in a time of need?”- instead of saying “no, i’m blind”, he went on this whole rant about the importance of pacifism. He decided to redact his application before it could get denied.

- And if you had no idea, he died on the same day as C.S. Lewis and JFK (November 22nd, 1963) of laryngeal cancer. He was the last of them to die that day, and he died hallucinating on LSD. There’s a book about these three in the afterlife called Between Heaven and Hell where they end up in purgatory and contribute to “The Great Conversation”, a concept partly born out of the novel itself.
