If Ganondorf was lying to anyone during that Wind Waker speech, he’d be lying to himself. The gerudo desert was indeed harsh, and Hyrule sucked during his time, but legit everything he did in Ocarina of Time is completely unjustifiable, except for the murder of the King of Hyrule. The man sat in luxury for 7 years with monsters surrounding the land, while his people remained in the desert. Yet at the end of the day, he believed that he had every right to do all of that.
Self-justification isn’t a trait that’s outright noticeable with Ganondorf, but Wind Waker puts it out in the open and shows that yes, the self proclaimed “King of Evil” truly believes he’s deserving of the world, and that his circumstances justify his crimes.
I feel like the fandom misses that while Ganondorf may not be this complex 5d villain, he still carries an interesting amount of traits like this
Hey, thanks for the ask!! I'm sorry, I haven't slept in over 24h and felt particularly rhapsodic today so uhhhh sorrryyyyy for being cringe about my little guyyyyyy (and the approximate use of English language that might ensue)
So yeah, I think there's absolutely a huge part of that, trying to make sense of the violently absurd situation he found himself in, a monster and one of the last people who remembers Hyrule and how it was destroyed, and rationalizing to himself why it is not meaningless.
I have to say, not to be uhhh a parody of myself, but I think it could be a little bit more complicated than that (all of it being interpretations of the text that I don't think canon entirely backs always, but my point is that it could be read out of it).
If Ganondorf wanted any meaningful chance to reshape his own reality, then there's no doing that without access to the Triforce. If he had wanted to go for the King's head and nothing else, he would have been stopped immediately by everybody who do have access to shards of the keys to the Sacred Realm (not to mention how trigger happy Zelda was about wishing ????? something to the Triforce about erasing him in some form). I don't think it would have been reasonable to aim for anything but the Triforce as a military goal --not to mention that his beef is half with Hyrule, and half with the Goddesses themselves for considering the gerudos beneath them in some form and for some reason (which becomes even more apparent and deranged in Wind Waker, as part of why he can't let go of Hyrule in my opinion is because their intervention was so violent he simply cannot wrap his head around it and, as usual, Will Not Be Defeated >:((( because he's that kind of bitter little shithead, which I uhhhh relate to a little too much maybe). And then, well. You can't exactly ask for the Triforce and be nice about it, right?
I'm not saying he wasn't gleefully horrible about it the entire time, but I can absolutely see a case of him being self-centered enough to see each of his actions as the necessary (or righteous/vengeful) next step to get closer to his goals, and one thing leads to the other, and after seven years of strife, well, the kingdom you wanted to rule is a pile of rubble, ash and misery you enforced at every step, and oops! You have alienated absolutely everyone who aren't your weird moms!
There's a ton of things to say about the many interpretations that could be made of his relationship to the gerudos so I won't over-expand on that, but, uhhhh yeah he probably used them, or at the very least ruled them with an iron fist to enforce his own power he believed unquestionnable (even if the goal was genuinely to do things for their sake, which in my opinion could still be argued --Hyrule is a big nightmare place during his reign, but the Valley is the only location basically untouched with arguably Kakariko after all).
To be honest, I think TP Ganondorf is more accursed with a sense of self-justification than WW Ganon, who has a surprising amount of clarity on his own motives (to restate my tags on a post I just reblogged: I don't think "I coveted this wind, I suppose" is particularly self-pitying, it's soberingly self-aware if anything). TP Ganon is the one who's obsessed with divine purpose and considering himself a weird take on the Chosen One.
But yeah, I think... To be completely honest, I sometimes feel like Ganondorf's potential (!!! not actual execution, very important to draw this distinction) is just kind of too large for the IP that birthed him? The full breadth of his complexity cannot be explored in a setting that demands he merely generates a simple conflict that doesn't seriously question the status quo while everything about him inherently begs for it (and I love Zelda and its simplicity and what it does, to be very clear!). Like, I know this is just me justifying my own investment to a degree, but... his relationship to the gerudo culture, his relationship to gender, to divinity, to fate, to self-definition, to absolute resistance grinded down to the point of absurdity (but at the same time, what else is there to do)... like all of this absolutely has potential to be large and epic and breathtaking, but. Nintendo needs to preserve the statut quo. And Ganondorf just cannot express all of these themes without having this simple world literally collapse around him.
This is what I find incredibly compelling about this dramatic disaster of a guy. And the very media that suggested all of these contradictions and inner conflicts (without necessarily understanding them at first I think) is now fighting tooth and nail against what it introduced, what he can embody and once questioned (in WW most potently) for the sake of Hyrule's moral balance, backpedalling into a state of simplicity that just never truly existed to that degree before --partially, in my opinion, because this conflict is scary to face heads on without taking significant artistic risks I am not confident we will ever see again, to be uhh less than optimistic.
So yeah! He isn't that complicated as the villain of the children video games for sure!! But. As a character, there's so much there, just sitting right under the surface.

I feel like what makes people call ToTK’s Ganondorf “the evilest” is because of his presentation and his bullshit literally just being the style of evil this man committed in OoT combined with BoTW mechanics. Also the goron opioid crisis might’ve contributed to that.
Aside from that OoT Ganondorf, while a complete bastard in comparison to the others, has some more human elements (having a hobby and having moms like Kotake and Koume) which keep him from being cartoonishly evil. The man may have conquered a kingdom, but you can at least never deny that he WAS a man out for power.
hope this explains stuff
That is pretty much the argument I made for TotK Ganondorf appearing to be more evil. We just don't know much about him apart from his desire to see the world destroyed, and that goal in itself seems very nonsensical for what we do know about him.The lore says that Ganondorf has deep seated hatred and bottomless ambition but what is the cause of those feelings? The only thing we see is that Ganondorf is incredibly pissed that Rauru sought to exert control over him with this oath of fealty and that he has an artefact that Ganondorf is jealous of which fine, envy can turn ugly. However, once he becomes Demon King his actions are so extreme that it even catches his own people off guard. The Gerudo sage alludes to this briefly when she mentions that he used to be their chief but that he "changed". So what changed, what made Ganondorf hate so deeply that upon receiving ultimate power he immediately began indiscriminately attacking everyone and burning everything to the ground? If his goal was to rule Hyrule why not simply seize power from Rauru and establish his own rule? Perhaps the people would have seen his power and simply capitulated to his demands but he didn't do that, he just went nuclear. What was he planning to do when he killed everything and left no survivors? Be a king of nothing? And also, TotK Ganondorf is an older man! So what was he doing up until this point? Was he content with ruling the Gerudo and handling skirmishes to satiate his bloodlust until Rauru came in with his idea for a new kingdom? Personally for me I find TotK Ganondorf, as you say, to be very cartoonish. His influence in the land, from spreading gloom, to gloom spawn, Phantom Ganon appearing everywhere, the descent to his lair etc. I think are all well executed in terms of feeling like a threat in terms of game mechanics, but it feels really diminished for me when I know who's behind it because like, dude why are you even doing all this? You're throwing a tantrum that has lasted thousands of years too long and for what? Just to be a pain in the ass? And that is why, for me, OoT Ganondorf in many ways feels more evil. There is so much subtext to him that really rounds out why he is Like That. When you learn that there was a civil war, that Hyrule had scientists studying the control of time, men that killed themselves to preserve that knowledge instead of sharing it with Ganondorf, that the Shadow Temple exists, that the Gerudo are regarded as an Othered people, almost seen as evil, that he has mothers and people that still respect him despite his descent into madness, that of all instruments to play he would choose an organ, that he is still a person at the end of the day...it makes his actions feel more impactful. And I mean to be honest, what comes off as more resentful? Subjugating the Gorons to a drug problem? Or cutting off the Goron food supply and placing a King Dodongo in their cave? And then saying “wait I’m not done with you just yet” , coming back to imprison them, revive an an ancient dragon that they had slain years in the past, and start feeding them to said dragon?
What is Ganondorf’s issue with the Gorons I think this merits some exploration 😂

Back when Ocarina of Time came out I was very young and it was my favorite game, so I created a self-insert character named August.
My head-canon was this: Since Koume and Kotake had influenced the creation and birth of Ganondorf he might not be the actual destined male, born every 100 years. Another Gerudo named Ra’Hel had gone out, met a nice Hylian and gave birth to August, the centennial Male. But as this was a threat to Ganondorf, he was disguised and raised among the women and girls. He also had a twin sister and best friend named Havah who knew his secret. (Why didn’t Ra’Hel just take August and Havah and leave? I dunno I was a kid.)
Years later, Link comes and befriends the Gerudo and August in particular. This began the adventures I would write about where Link, Sheik and August quested across Hyrule to stop Ganondorf’s evil plans.
August had the unique weapons of a whip named Sirocco, which he could use for various purposes like Indiana Jones, a beautifully bejeweled Gerudo Scimitar, and a golden, clawed glove of his own making on his right hand that helped him scale/slide down walls as well as fight.
Character wise he was a soft spoken and deeply sensitive, but very confident young man with strong convictions who was very excited to see the outside world and be himself without having to hide. In one story, I wrote that he found out Sheik was Zelda in disguise but kept her precious secret as he deeply understood her predicament, having lived it himself for years. In later stories, he was confused because he found both Sheik (Zelda) and Link attractive! He ultimately fell deeply in love with Link but never told him… although the fact that Link seemed attracted to the male-presenting Sheik gave him hope… Yup, slow-burn/unrequited romance! (Young pre-out bisexual me was pretty spicy don’t you think? Haha)
In the end, he helped Link and Zelda retake the kingdom and while he was supposed to become King, as per tradition, having seen the Gerudo culture from a different POV, he was a strong proponent of abandoning this tradition and passed the crown to his twin sister, Havah. August continued his adventures and friendship with Zelda, but now, sadly, without Link. He journeyed far and wide helping rebuild, looking to rehabilitate the image of the Gerudo across Hyrule. The last story I wrote was a short one where Zelda and August reminisce and share how much they miss Link.
I kept this character locked away for years. Then when Breath of the Wild came out and Link was disguised as a Vai, I remembered August and eagerly found and touched up an old drawing of him. I was so excited! I thought “This old story still works and he fits even better in the BOtW world!” (I didn’t get my own skin tone quite right, as I am a little darker than August in this picture.)
Now that Tears of the Kingdom is out, I am sharing this for the first time. Seeing Link’s arm and the art style of everything as well as the story of ToTK, which is all about finding yourself and finding a family of friends, I felt August fit better than ever! Like it or not The Legend of Zelda has long been a safe, inviting, exciting world for people like me (Jewish, Spanish, Cis-Bi Male) as well as for many others. I hope it continues to be for years to come. Hyrule is big enough for everyone.

I was listening to Kotake and Koume's theme again and thinking about loam Link's backstory again and. Y'know how Ganon was trapped under Hyrule Castle for abit. And how the fae essentially tortured Link. How far fetched do you think it'd be for a couple of witchy twins to masquerade as fae folk and spring a trap for the Hero's Spirit for for Plot Reasons. Probably to try and extract like the actual Hero's Spirit or something or the triforce if she's got it. You mentioned the fae actually took Link's name and that's why they go by Link... I wonder what implications that might have. Impersonation, doppleganger maybe?
the twinrove theme is so mischievous, it's infectious
>:) oh i have PLANS for the name thing
but first Koume and Kotake's theme really is a HUGE bop. its BOUNCY and NICE
and as for fae trap............... >:) buckle up this is gonna be wild (TW for child abuse and enslavement)
So, the pieces of the goddess-blood essence are found and guarded by greedy monsters who want to possess them and use their power. The fourth piece is possessed by the Fae Lord (working name) in the alternate realm of Faerie, who also happens to be the same guy who enslaved Link and took her name. He has similar vibes to Ghirahim; cruel, unimaginably powerful, doesn't register you as a threat at all, etc.
When the group (just Link and Stella really) track him down, he reveals the piece of the goddess-blood essence that he has (the fourth one, Essence of the Skies) and the power it gave him. Within the faerie realm they're at a severe disadvantage (with reasons undecided upon) and he gives them one option: Link serves in his court for a day like she did when she was young, and he gives them his piece of the GBE. Might be some name influence in there, not sure. (deals with the fae are ALWAYS a VERY BAD idea. they can't lie but they can twist their words. the bargains are also binding so good luck)
ANYways they take the deal because they have to (shh ill have a better reason soon) and then you have to play through a series of minigames where Link has to relive her trauma while being completely vulnerable (she has to relinquish all her weapons, gear, even her clothes NO SHES NOT NAKED shes just wearing different ones its meant to show her vulnerability and lack of control okay).
The most important one is the last one, where she's serving at his table at a faerie banquet. You have to walk down the length of the table and pour red liquid (what is it 😉) from a crystal pitcher into the cups of the guests. The faerie sitting at the table will attempt to trip you as you walk by and bump you as you pour. Balancing the pitcher and pouring the liquid uses motion controls, so if you wobble and drop it, it's game over.
The reason behind that is that when Link as a child waited on the Fae Lord's table, any mistake would mean punishment. Torture, injury, and humiliation were fun for the Fae Lord and his guests, so when one of the enslaved kids dropped a dish or spilled anything they would be nonlethally mutilated at best, turned into an animal and eaten at worst. That's how Link got all of the scars on her face (and the antlers + extra thumb/claw + snake fangs on the roof of her mouth). She's the lucky one. None of the other kids that she knew survived, much less got out of faerie.
Anyway, Link makes her way to the end of the table (where the Fae Lord sits) after a slew of game overs. When she gets there and start pouring his drink, he bowls you over and the crystal pitcher s h a t t e r s
(Side note: Link has severe trauma related to shattering sounds. I didn't mention this before but I want the game over screen to feature some subtle shattering sound)(also i KNOW stella isn't doing anything during all of this shh ill figure something out for her)
This technically breaks the conditions of the deal, but he's "generous" and offers her a new one. If she can defeat him in battle using only what he gives her, he'll give her the goddess-blood essence and let her go. (She does know he won't actually relinquish the GBE and that she'll have to take it from him by force don't worry i didn't forget that)
And he hands her a single glass shard from the pitcher she broke.
We go straight into a one-on-one boss battle after this. He's just toying with you, like Ghirahim's first stage in his first fight. He kinda just lazily walks around in the arena, as you try to get close and swipe at him with your tiny piece of glass.
Time out: I need to describe something important. In this game Link has several fighting styles available for her to switch between. She starts with a basic, unarmed set of moves that contain punches and kicks, but if you get the combos going she'll start using the claw on her wrist and end it by unsheathing her fangs and sinking them into her enemy. During this battle all fighting style options except the one that uses the glass shard are greyed out, including the base unarmed one, because of the conditions of the deal (no tools except the one he gives you). I think you can see where this is going.
After you get a couple hits in, he stops to monologue at you about how useless you are, how helpless you are, how you have nothing right now, blah blah blah
And Link realizes something.
Because—he gave her fangs and horns and claws. But more than that, he taught her mettle and steadiness and courage. (Granted, it was all very shitty and really due to her actions and not his, but IT WORKS OKAY) I actually wrote her lines in this moment, whether she ends up speaking them or not:
"You gave me the fear in my bones, the wit in my nerves, and the fire in my blood.
"You gave me the horns on my head, the claws in my hands, the poison on my tongue.
"You taught me silence. You taught me fear. You taught me patience.
"You taught me courage."
And then, the base unarmed fighting style option is no longer greyed out.
It's still not an easy boss fight; she's still without her weapons. But it's not impossible either. And when she's got him pinned, he shouts the name he took from her.
She pauses.
Glares.
And says, "That's not my name."
Then goes in for the ending blow with her venomous fangs.
😁 whaddya think? I had a lot of fun with this.

i know that theres literally zero information on their real relationship with ganondorf but i generalyl am prone to squinting at people who think koume and kotake were Good Parents to ganondorf. like maybe im being influenced by studiorats work where they are straight up abusive but i dont really see them as being especially loving in a way ganondorf would be able to recognize especially as a child. at best theyre trying to make him into what he must be to accomplish their/his goals and not closely consodering the toll it would have on him

THE DESERT KING. - GENSHIN IMPACT.
within the depths of the sumeru desert, the great red sand, exists a people rumored to be bonded so deeply to lightning that it is not sandstorms that haunt their domain, but thunderstorms. it is said that one can anticipate the movement of their groups in ancient times by how the skies would darken with clouds that would never give any relieving rain, only the distant rumblings of threatening thunder, and the crackle of lightning bolting down into the dunes.
in the modern era, there is a little less mystery around who, precisely, these people are.
the gerudo are well-known and well-integrated in sumeru society, taking up ranks among their scholars and serving as pillars in the community at large and, indeed, have a connection with lightning. while not all members of gerudo society are blessed with it, many are known to be able to control the influence of lightning even without a vision--something they thank the goddess of the sand for, who oversees their people, and ensures their survival in the harsh desert.
the gerudo live in an oasis close to the heart of the great red sand enclosed by hardened walls of sand turned to rock with a single point of entry and exit. legends say that the first king summoned forth these walls with a prayer to the goddess of the sand when an ancient war was ravaging sumeru. hearing his plea, the goddess granted the gerudo the miles-high stone walls, crafted from churning sands, and reinvigorated them with the strength and endurance to outlast their enemies.
to this day, the gerudo remain in this ancestral home. many sumeru scholars travel to the gerudo oasis to study the unique and beautiful architecture their homes are crafted from, many more requesting permission to document the royal palace at the oasis's center. crafted from shimmering gold that shines like sand in the sun, the massive palace once hosted their goddess, and now it is the home to their long line of kings and queens. the twin queen-mothers, koume and kotake, live in a separate wing of the palace dedicated to still-living royals that have stepped down from the position of head of the gerudo.
ganondorf is the current king of the gerudo, and from the time of his birth to the present era, he has been spoken as one who will reignite the era of god-kings. many have likened him to king deshret, whose tragic end has left many doubting the supposed praise this comparison is.
he wields no vision, and yet, he seemingly has the blessing of the gods who watch over them, for he wields incredible power beyond a mere mortal man. lightning summons at his beckon, magic flows easily at his command, and he has a strange connection with the beasts of the desert--namely, the consecrated beasts.
the desert king is often found with at least one consecrated beast nearby, remaining in his presence of its own free will and drawn by something even ganondorf cannot materialize into words. his people are wholly unbothered by it, for since he was an infant, the beasts have gathered, harmless as pups and eager to seemingly serve their king from the moment he could speak to command them.
the gerudo often can be found as swords-for-hire and working as scholars at the akademiya. they are easily recognized for their vivid red hair and golden eyes, which are both dominant traits in the gerudo lineage no matter how diluted the bloodline is.
ganondorf makes semi-frequent trips to sumeru city, usually accompanied with a royal envoy. his presence is obvious and never hidden--as it is rather hard to hide the existence of a towering man well over seven feet tall built like a wall. the purpose of his visits are usually to arrange trade between his people and the merchants of sumeru, and also to peer in on the akademiya, especially with the recent upheaval and removal of the last grand sage.

Dragmire Ganondorf Gender: Male Hair Color: Red Eye Color: Gold Race: Gerudo (Shiekah father, Gerudo Mother)
Timeline Placement: Ocarina of Time, but other Verses exist.
Other Information:
Ganondorf was the male rumored to be born once every 100 years for the Gerudo. Without the previous King alive and present more of the Gerudo venture outside to sleep with guys for kids more often, and so upon coming of age he became their King as tradition dictates. As a child he was given many lessons, both the normal politics and war, as well the unusual magic and theft. The Gerudo Tribes he was raised by were called thieves and had chosen to actually do things worthy of being called such. He was most directly raised by two witches who shared the position of the Great Sage of the Gerudo, Koume and Kotake, and was taught by them as well. Once they decided he was old enough he was given the trial that would acknowledge him as an adult, he was actually too young and was only 9 but the Gerudo needed a King since they were being dragged into Hyrule's civil war.
Ganondorf did his duties as King of the Gerudo but he also ventured to the edge of the desert and watched as the Hylians lived their lives uncaring about the conditions they lived in compared with others. This lead to him resenting them and wanting to take their idealistic lives from them. One of his duties was to be present for the burial rites of any dead warrior and Gerudo being what they are nearly everyone is a warrior among the Tribe at that time. This further led him along a path of hate and resentment towards the Hylains and other peoples.
All of this lead to him feeling very burdened with wanting his people to have a better life and yet feeling as though there was no way to do so. He began experimenting with darker magics than he should, creating the Darknuts and the Phantoms in an attempt to protect his people. It was also around this time that his surrogate mothers, Koume and Kotake, preformed a ritual that allows what remains of Demise's curse to take stronger hold of Ganondorf thus changing his views of the world further ultimately leading to him wanting to destroy the things the Gerudo lack instead of to lead his people to better.
So he goes to Hyrule and swears allegiance to the King of Hyrule but is secretly trying to find a way to get to the Triforce which he cannot get to without the racial artifacts of the Kokiri, Gorons, and Zora that he fails to retrieve. Link shows up with them and enters the sacred realm by drawing the Master Sword, Ganondorf follows him and attempts to claim the Triforce but the only piece that remains with him is the piece that represents power. It's at this point he completely forgets his original intentions and wants only to rule and dominate everyone.
Link eventually defeats him and he gets sealed away, and that gives him time to realize what happened, in time he figures out how to remove the curse and does so though he still wishes to take over Hyrule but this time it is once more to better life for his people. In another timeline formed by Link's time traveling he is stopped before he can get the Triforce piece and is sealed in another realm after killing one of those involved in trying to kill him for what he intended to do. He again failed because of the Curse of Demise and it's influence over him.

Ocarina of Time Rewrite
The Deku Tree, and Jabu Jabu were cursed by Demise.
Jabu Jabu is presumed to be under the weather for no reason.
And I think the Deku Tree's line would instead be, "Now...listen carefully...An old and great power afflicted me with the curse. It will soon take the shape of a man from the desert. You must prevent this power from taking this...the Kokiri Emerald…" in place of the canon dialogue.
Similarly Dodongos started to greatly increase in the cavern because of Demise's Influence, similar to the surge of monster numbers we see in BOTW, making it unsafe for Gorons to get their food so they closed it off to keep the infestation at bay.
See how none of this is Ganondorf's fault?
Ganondorf's tribe was afflicted with famine, and disease so he traveled to Hyrule to make allies so his tribe could survive (DESPITE Hyrule and the Gerudos history. His tribe was cut off from other Gerudo so they couldn't go to them for help. He was very desperate). He slowly became influenced by Demise's Curse the longer he spent in Hyrule Castle- because I believe the curse's focal point is beneath the castle, where Demise was once sealed. Demise's Curse only truly took control when; The Sacred Realm was opened and the Triforce split, and Ganondorf was given the Triforce of Power (Demise's piece of the Triforce).
Also, whatever Ganondorf's Coup thing that caused Impa and Zelda to run out of Castletown? Yeah no. Zelda gets the vision that she needs to leave the castle for her safety and stay hidden. Impa trusts her, and they stop by Link to drop off the Ocarina of Time.
When Link opens the entrance to the sacred realm, Ganondorf is there because Demise's influence is becoming stronger and basically puppeteers him to the Temple of Time to regain the power it needs to take over Ganondorf's body.
Post 7 year nap, Demise- in the form of Ganondorf does the shit he did. Link, Zelda and the Seven Sages defeat Demise, and Zelda sends Link back once the curse was broken for the meantime, to prevent Demise's curse rising in the first place.
He's sent back after he is told by the Deku Tree to go to Hyrule Castle but before he meets Zelda. He gives Zelda the Kokiri Emerald to keep safe, while catching her up to what happens if the Door of Time is opened. Then, afterwards Link goes to Ganondorf, gives him a warning to leave Hyrule Castle but he’s arrested by the Hylian Guard for treason. Link tries to protest but he is a child- and his accounts of “Ganondorf” causing mayhem (As told by Zelda) contradict his supposed innocence.
He helps out the Gorons, Zora and Nabooru, again, not taking the spirit stones with him but instead telling them to protect them fiercely. Nabooru isn't kidnapped, thanks to Link dealing with Koume and Kotake early. He gives her the silver gauntlets and informs her of what has happened (mildly breaks down because he couldn’t stop them from arresting Ganondorf). Nabooru and her tribe leave further into the desert to evade the Hylian Soldiers and search for help among the other Gerudo for their tribe's afflictions.
Then Link starts to get ready to look for Navi, Zelda gives him the Ocarina of Time for him to keep safe in return. He gives Saria the fairy ocarina back and sets off with Epona- who he bought from Talon (His wallet just defies time itself ig).
Then Majora's Mask happens.

[Ganonymous:] Links' thoughts on Sesame Street? Will Hylia ever make an appearance? The Goddesses actually said the Wind Fish was Levias in Chapter 8, but immortals can have flawed memories sometimes. Out of curiosity, is there a reason the Aryll --> Steam thing wouldn't work? What do you think are the components of the Lorulean Triforce? Why do Koume, Kotake, and Ganondorf have green skin (I personally think it relates to the Zuna from FSA) when none of the other Gerudo do?
I am running out of ways to declare “ONCE MORE, IN ORDER!” in a new and interesting fashion.
Sesame Street?  Why Sesame Street?  I don’t understand where you’re going with that one, sorry.
Maaaaaaaaaaaybe.
You are correct, but to be fair I think I wrote Ch.8 before realizing what BotW was doing.  I’ll see about fixing it.
I mean, I guess it would still work, but I had this cute little picture in my head of Grandma Aryll proudly embarrassing her grandson at his Engineer ceremony and now if he’s actually five generations removed instead of three she’s probably dead and I don’t get to indulge in familial cuddles.
You know, that’s a really good question that I wish Nintendo had given us an answer to.  If I had to take a stab at it, I’d say Power -> Influence, Courage -> Bravery, and Wisdom -> Knowledge, maybe?  Similar, but different enough to be a Dark World Reflection.  *Shrugs* It’s totally up to interpretation, I think.
Influence of Evil, maybe?  I'm not sure this is a question I can rightfully answer.

Medli’s Melodies: A bewitching violin cover of Kotake and Koume’s theme
Medli’s Melodies: A bewitching violin cover of Kotake and Koume’s theme
I’m always impressed by the talent of musicians that create violin covers, and the piece I’m looking at today by Patti Rudisillis no exception. But her cover in particular — a rendition of the Kotake and Koume theme — really struck a chord with me. Patti draws inspiration from the fact that the witches are twins to influence the style of her cover, with the end result being a vibrant re-creation…

You kno, I always (since I started playing LoZ 20+ years ago+additional ideas that came later) assumed Ganondorf is green bc of Koume and Kotake's influence. They're two powerful witches, and the occasional depiction of witches being green has probably also spread to Japan, so from that to show Ganon's ties to them, they were all three turned shades of green bc magic. It also sounded in-game like those two were a big reason for why Ganondorf went power mad and pushed war, even tho the other Gerudo didn't want him to go that extreme. Doesn't explain totk Ganondorf since there's literally no reason or backstory for him, but maybe it's like "tradition" by now. I also know there's a Chinese saying "putting on a green hat" which means the same as being green with envy, so I could imagine smth similar exists in Japanese, smth that could have worked with Oot's Ganondorf's envy of Hyrule's life giving lands. Since TP and WW, and HW Ganondorf are all the same guy, that kinda still works? I know it's really being viewed critical why he looks like he looks w the green skin, so thought I'd share a thing I basically came up with as a kid. (Except the green hat, only found out later, but the green with envy thought I did have back then.) Green hat works more for Link in the literal sense, so maybe Ganondorf has a figurative green hat. 😩
Hey! Yeah, I assumed the same for a very long time, and I'm pretty sure it's still the intent today.
I still think it's worth mentioning the trend has been really exacerbated with time; even back in OoT, his skin tone is not... that off the charts. Like yes, it does lean green, but after doing some color picking, it still stands reasonnably in the brown. It is a little sickly/olive, and there is a big gap between the concept arts and the model in-game already then (and in Smash, he's pretty much in the browns in his default model too), but it *could* be somebody's skin color. It's the same thing for WW Ganon btw, where his skin is definitively brown in the concept art and got much greener once modeled in the game. TP Ganon is the one where the difference between concept art and in-game skin is the least noticeable, but he also has the darkest shade by far so it doesn't read super green, even if it is quite there if you color pick. TotK Ganon is the color of a spinach smoothie in comparaison; even in the concept art itself, which might be even greener than the model in-game (a first!)
To be generous and fair to the whole thing, I think it used to be a case of what looked the most dramatic in-game, and a green hue does look less natural, colder, deader and scarier than a red-base one, especially in extremely intense lighting situations where Ganon often finds himself in, where it is easy to use that base color for contrast, especially with the red of his hair or the gold of his eyes and his little forehead jewel. This coupled with the influence of Twinrova and the association with envy probably pushed this direction even further every time.
But again, it is also hard to extract these choices from the history, in fantasy and sci-fi, of how to still dehumanize archetypes of PoCs without actually having them "being PoCs", or using excuses of inherent evilness to make their treatment by the narrative more acceptable. I am not mad at this choice inherently, but I am critical of it in the light of every other choice made in the year of our lady Hylia 2023 and the fact that I *so often* see this being used as protection against criticisms of both orientalism and a lack of care for what it implies about the worldbuilding of Hyrule. In OoT there was the connection to dark magic and the Twinrova; but in TotK, the Twinrova are easter eggs at best, not an active part of what shaped our antagonist and made him who he is. His evilness is made profusely clear the second he grabs the stone and becomes basically Satan with very cool hair, in a design that does lean super red and black anyway; one would think he'd rather try to hide his true nature before this?
(there is also history of PoC being turned green to avoid direct critique in fantasy/sci-fi worldbuilding, I think Star Trek is one of the big culprits but don't quote me on that)
Again, it's the package that is weird; and even more than the package, gradually changing PoC features over time in a way that, while not maybe being the only reason for the change, does allow the heroes to clearly identify the source of evil as Unlike Them while also distancing themselves from the more direct racist implications instead of... kind of allowing this to complicate the conflict, and accept that the conflict *is already complicated* no matter what is retconned or emphasized or changed. But the priority is simplicity and cleanness, and so Ganon and the gerudos do bear the blunt of these choices more often than not; the green skin being one of the more visible examples.

Bearing Power, part 1
“Grandmother, Mother said you called for me?” I approached the ancient crone settled in her nest of cushions; Great-Grandmother had lived to see the last Gerudo prince, but she never spoke of that time. No-one did.
It was frustrating; Here I was, nearly sixteen, and still i knew nothing of my birthright, nor of my namesake. Mother had said that my name carried power, that it sat down in my bones and that the weird triangular birthmark mark on my right hand was further evidence of it, but she’d looked very scared when she told me. It was as if she feared me, not just the stories. But, I’m her son. I’d never hurt her, I love her too much.
“It is time you know the truth, Ganon.”
There was a sudden ominous note to the air; it was as though the incense had begun burning more heavily, or had changed to smell like the wildfires we sometimes faced.
“It is time you know of the curse that you bear.”
I could feel my heart pounding in my ears. A curse? Surely that was an overstatement?
“Grandmother, I don’t know what you mean. What curse? Is it because I’m the only man in the tribe?”
“Not yet a man, dear child. Not yet a man, but mature enough to understand the dangers you will face. Your mother and aunts have told you how our tribe only brings forth a male child every hundred years, I’m certain. But, have they told you the stories of those children? Have they told you of the men that bore your name?” I could see a faint, terrifying light peering at me from eyes that should be blind, but I couldn’t respond. I shook my head, otherwise frozen like the desert nights.
“Ganon. Occasionally, Ganondorf. Once known as the Thief King, he was blessed by the goddesses with the Triforce of Power. Do you know what the Triforce is?” Her eyes were fully open now, staring at me with the intensity of a predator staring down its prey. I shook my head, I’d never heard of a triforce before.
“The Triforce is a blessing from the Goddesses, originally meant to protect all of the people in and around the country of Hyrule. However, it was so powerful as a single relic that it was, by their blessing, split into three pieces; the first, Wisdom, was handed to the line of the goddess Hylia, who rendered herself mortal for the sake of her people that they may be guarded from the Calamity, Demise. Remember that name, dear boy. Remember it, and fear it, for its owner strives to bring your ruin. The second piece was, by means I know not, obtained by the first prince of our people, Ganon the Thief. He, and every princeling after him, fell to Demise’s corruption. It is said that our sons are born as the incarnation of Demise’s hatred, but I refuse to believe this. Your mother, bless her, tries to follow my lead, but it is hard when our people have been so scarred by history’s actions.” Great-Grandmother trailed off, seemingly lost in thought - or perhaps memory? I decided to ask, now that fear had given way to dread.
“So then... why didn’t you leave me out in the desert? If I am to become... this monstrosity-” It hurt to say, and dread squeezed my heart like a vice, “-why let me live? Why not spare everyone the pain and suffering? Wouldn’t.... wouldn’t it be better if one person died than if everyone suffered?“ My voice faltered, and the stare that Great-Grandmother gave me told me she had considered this herself.
“That was one opinion voiced when you were born, yes. Another, though, reminded all of us - the first prince to fall fell because of the twin corruptors that raised him, Koume and Kotake. So we swore, all of us, that you would not die, nor would you be given special treatment -If you recall, you have suffered the same trials and hardships as the rest of the tribe-, so that you would remain humble. However, our influence has lessened as you have grown. Ganon, the eve of your maturation approaches. Once you cross that line, none of us can stop you from becoming whatever it is that the goddesses -or their enemies, for that matter- would have you be. Therefore, your mother asked that I tell you of the last Great Destroyer, the last Princeling that bore your name.”
I could feel my heart pounding, but I didn’t speak. I don’t want to be a destroyer! The tribe was thriving, our relationship with the kingdom was bordering utopian! Great-Grandmother seemed to see the fear and perhaps the frustrated defiance in my face, though.
“Ganondorf, as we called him, was raised to be proud, to see himself above all others. He dabbled in dark magicks, things we had thought sealed away or destroyed long ago. He managed to corrupt a member of a race known as the Twili, of the Twilit realm that borders our own. That is the realm the dead pass through on their way to the afterlife, and the realm that ghosts originate from. Ganondorf broke the barriers between the realms through this puppet he corrupted; he nearly destroyed everything, and certainly succeeded in overtaking the Hylian Princess of the time. I was a young thing, then, little more than a child. But, I remember the dark days, and the fate that sought that Prince. That fate came at the hands of a young goatherd from the south, marked upon his left hand and possessing infinite courage. He defeated the evils, looked our corrupted prince in the eye and slew him. After, he tried to ensure that the spirit that had been Ganondorf received the proper honors so that, this time, perhaps he could pass on. Something haunted that boy, It was visible in his eyes. I managed to get the truth from him, once and only once. He was haunted by the spirit of the last Hero, the Hero of Time who had faced the Thief King and who had shattered time to save us all. The Twilit Hero knew the corruption’s weaknesses because he had been taught by the first hero, and he hoped against all chance that he would be the last. The princeling cost that boy who was not much older than you are now his sanity, his home, any measure of security that he had. He gained the ability to shapeshift - I saw it, once, he turned into a massive wolf marked in green and brown with divine markings and defended us from a Twilit monstrosity. But, I wonder sometimes what he had to lose to gain it...” Great Grandmother paused, and shook her head. “Ganon, my boy, precious child of the Gerudo, you must go to the Castle at the center of Hyrule; you carry on your shoulders the legacy of destruction that has haunted this land for generations beyond count, and I fear that you are the only one who can bring the end of the cycle. Seek out King Daphnes and his daughter, Zelda. They are level-headed people, though they will not trust you. Expect to be met with sword and spear, for every Gerudo before you that bore your name has only brought destruction to their homeland. Be gentle, however, and humble and honest; I see the fear I have inspired in you. Let them see it too. They will aid you.”

FULL NAME.  Ganondorf Dragmire MEANING. The etymology of the first name comes from Celtic for fair or light or of light decent and Germanic for village. The last name is probably based on a Slavic name meaning precious peace, alternatively it could be based on some of the numerous names that mean dragon. In my own in universe HC  I’m still deciding somewhat. NICKNAME.  King, Lord, Daemon, Demon, Beast, Darkness, Shadow, Him, The Dark One, Thief, The Great, the list of titles, curses, and praises used as shorthand are endless GENDER.  Male HEIGHT.  9′2″ AGE.  Physically he appears as about 40 years ZODIAC. Nah SPOKEN LANGUAGES.  Archaic Gerudo, Gerudo, Old Hylian, Middle Hylian, Hylian, Sheikah, the basics of Zora and Goron of which he can read and listen but only speak in basic, blin, the truly ancient, original script of the gods.
𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 !
HAIR COLOUR. It flows like fire, starting as a bright and sunny orange-yellow but fading towards blood red near the tips. It had once almost all been a bright, harsh red but the tips faded darker later in his life EYE COLOUR.  Gold and fiery SKIN TONE. An earthy shade of green BODY TYPE.  Mountainous, twice the breadth of a normal man scaled to his size, thrice that of one not. ACCENT. He can speak with perfect fluidity of the royal court, but if he is settling into his preferred diction he tends to allow the slightest touch of his original Gerudo accent, it’s most obvious in the occasional twist on some of the r sounds. VOICE. I’ll give you a quick sample.
DOMINANT HAND.  Ganondorf was originally right handed but has trained to be ambidextrous, one never knows when one hand will be disabled in war. POSTURE. He usually manages to keep good posture but is almost always noticeably tense even from childhood, he always seems to be carrying a weight, and during times of stress or strain and frustration he can gain a significant hunch in his prowling. SCARS. Too many to easily list, most from training as a child. The most obvious are a massive lichtenberg figure sprawling and wrapping around his right arm, up over his chest, and down his right shoulder plate, it was caused by an early attempt at lightning magic when he was far too unprepared for it. Another  would be the massive gashes of teeth in arm, leg, and even one over the left base of the neck from being thrown to wolfos packs again and again until victory or injury beyond fighting capacity. Large burn marks from pillars of flames in going through the Gerudo trials with... special modifiers, such as a blindfold. Picketed by piercings of arrows and spears, but the deepest and worst of these come from the repeated stabbing of the Master Sword leaving dozens, and later in his undying life perhaps hundreds, of marks in his chest and forehead. Not exactly a scar but his nose was not originally nearly as flat as it was later in life, it had been smashed flat in battle with Link. He wears his scars as a point of pride, for it is experience and understanding that makes him so deadly, and one with so many vicious edges is quite menacing. This is not all of them, but most. TATTOOS.  I keep going back and forth on this, I think he’d have some designs based off of legends etched into his back. It would be on his back if anywhere. MOST NOTICEABLE FEATURE(S). There’s a lot there, from the deep scars just barely visible under his armor to the hair carefully styled further to inspire the image of fire, the one massive long nose or otherwise flattened but still large and broad, eyes like molten gold pierced by black spears, of course the most obvious is sheer size and muscularity, he is built not like a body builder but a proper strongman, his flesh packed tight and with overwhelming power.
𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 !
PLACE OF BIRTH. Gerudo Desert HOMETOWN.  The Gerudo Fortress BIRTH WEIGHT.  On the heavier end, but not beyond what was normal BIRTH HEIGHT.  Large, but not unnaturally so, he would not begin quite developing as rapidly until at least the age of two from which it would be exponentially more distant to others as he grows at more than time and a half the speed compared to others of his time. MANNER OF BIRTH.  He was born destined to prove himself a king, as all men of the Gerudo are, it was of great importance and much was done to ensure he survived the most vulnerable early portion of his life. FIRST WORDS.  Sister, king, water, field SIBLINGS. None biologically, many in how the Gerudo referred to him. PARENTS.   He never learned his birth mother’s name, Koume and Kotake were the closest thing from age five on combined with dozens of the most elite to train and instruct. PARENT INVOLVEMENT. His birth mother was well involved and caring before her death, not that he could recall much of it. The twins were strict, harsh, and entirely dedicated to crafting the greatest of warriors. They cared for him in their own twisted way, to make themselves a king they considered beyond all by forging him in a crucible of hellfire. He does not love them, but he respects them and considers it to have been the correct decision, as said before most of his scars come from his youth and indirectly or directly from Koume and Kotake, he wears them with a sense of pride. Ganondorf would not be Ganondorf without it and for that he is ever grateful to their tutelage.
𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 !
OCCUPATION. King of the Gerudo, Demons, Beasts, and all that is Darkness, intermittently King of Hyrule, ever a conqueror, ever at war. CURRENT RESIDENCE.  Imprisoned in the void between worlds, the Sacred Realm, ruling over Hyrule Castle or the Gerudo Desert, it varies greatly depending on period and era. There is one thing he keeps at all times sealed deep beneath the ground as a personal library, a safehouse for all his relics and books to be kept throughout all his lives. CLOSE FRIENDS.  Formerly Nabooru, formerly. RELATIONSHIP STATUS.  Single FINANCIAL STATUS.  Initially what Hyrule would have considered quite low, not impoverished or peasant but very lowly in nobles with only what he needed, given those needs came to include expensive armor, blade, and books but nothing near a proper manor. He would take much in his conquest. DRIVER’S LICENSE. Doesn’t exist. He is a master of cavalry though. CRIMINAL RECORD. In his own kingdom he has no crimes to list, in Hyrule, Goron, and Zora society...Yes would be a shorter answer. VICES.  Wrath, jealousy
𝐬𝐞𝐱 & 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 !
SEXUAL ORIENTATION. Straight, he mostly seeks eventual children in this regard. ROMANTIC ORIENTATION.  Straight if he were to find attraction from a logical standpoint as previously stated. For the most part he merely uses it as a tool, a weapon, something to manipulate the court with as some did find him to have a strange appeal, and emotions are such easy things to maneuver, in that case he doesn’t care what the other is if it can be turned to his benefit. It would still be limited, he’s not willing to go very far with those he does not care for, he has his code. PREFERRED EMOTIONAL ROLE.  submissive       |       dominant   |       switch | PREFERRED SEXUAL ROLE.  submissive       |       dominant       |       switch LIBIDO.  Not much, he feels some biologically but it is buried under far stronger emotions and he has far too much control over himself to let something such as that influence any aspect of himself. TURN ON’S. ATTRACTIONS Oh okay. We’re doing this now. WELP. I’ll list attractions more than anything instead. He likes intelligence, someone able to compete with him, to manage their own in sparring of mind, he also likes that of physicality but the mind is much more important in this regard, he needs to be able to have deep, long, detailed conversations with someone who understands and shares a thirst to learn. He needs a competitor, a challenge, an equal of puzzle and intrigue TURN OFF’S.   Weakness, surrender, an inability to keep up with him in conversation. While he is all about control and hates having things above him, someone equal to him, able to challenge him, he enjoys challenge, he would not be attracted to something within his control for he already has it.
RELATIONSHIP TENDENCIES.
𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬 !
CHARACTER’S THEME SONG. Who needs just one? HOBBIES TO PASS TIME.  Music is his only pure hobby, he has other things he has as hobbies but they also are used to hone his mind or enhance his study or sharpen his body. Hunting, camping, reading, sparring, history, these are passions but they are also duties and experiences to use as weapons. MENTAL ILLNESSES.  His entire personality I don’t write mental illnesses, I write a personality. Honestly I somewhat think this idea of intentionally adding mental illness as traits is not a great one, if it’s a major focus fine I can understand that but in my humble opinion you should really write a character and others can try and diagnose whatever but the writer sets out not to write a mental illness but purely the character and whatever illnesses occur are just expanding from that rather than purposely designed. Exception to this would be if that’s part of a message or the mental illness is specifically what’s being explored, but I prefer a character study. Personal preference. PHYSICAL ILLNESSES.  None LEFT OR RIGHT BRAINED. I don’t like this kind of phrasing, left brain I suppose, he’s very methodical, though he does enjoy art and such.
PHOBIAS.  Enslavement - a loss of self-control, irrelevance, loss of that which he yet cares for.
SELF CONFIDENCE LEVEL.  What is impossible will be made possible by his hand no matter what laws attempt to stop him, be them of Hyrule, the world, the gods, his own personal code never but he will do what no others can. He has complete and utter confidence in himself. VULNERABILITIES. Even for all his power, he has arrogance. For all his cruelty, he does have a personal code, a few lines he will not cross. In his youth he was unable to keep himself from his rage, unable to properly respond and keep grip. He has some low level of madness to him later in life and as he grows on becomes more and more splintered. His sharp and honed mind struggles when it is blindsided, he struggles to adapt to things too far outside his expectations and no matter how monstrous one’s intelligence and how unending his experience he cannot predict every single avenue of attack.
TAGGED BY: I AM THE KING OF THIEVES ( stolen from @spiritmaiden )
TAGGING: Ganondorf says stealing is good, unless it’s from me.
(steal from me tho)

Speaking of Gerudo intelligentsia, I always thought that Kotake was a disgraced magician scholar who was one of the only Gerudo to be accepted into a prestigious Hylian mage academy, only to be forced to flee the country after her experiments into psychotherapy started getting more dubious. Or she ended up magically lobotomizing a professor who was messing with one of her patients.
Koume ended up entering the underworld to try to support Kotake’s tuition. She was the one who ended up getting Kotake out of the city when things went south. They fled into the wastelands and started a new life as doctors and medicine women for anyone desperate enough to seek their services. They acquired a reputation for being professional midwives, which was how they ended up gaining a lot of influence among the Gerudo elite. Turns out that saving prominent political leaders from dying in childbirth can earn you some brownie points with either the cheiftans or their heirs, or at least enough respect to ensure that people leave you alone when they don’t need your help.
I mean, someone had to teach Ganon all of that stuff about etiquette, reading, magic, and music. Kotake was a frustrated polymath stuck living vicariously through her equally gifted foster son, and Koume’s the one who ended up taking him on “field trips” for more practical lessons on herbology, combat, and the art of Making Friends and Influencing People.

hc hour // always accepting! // @hyliancourage
the twin sorceresses koume and kotake took ganondorf beneath their wings upon his very infancy, when he was born to a royal guard seemingly incapable of properly serving him as a parent. they already served the queen as counsel, and given their wisdom, they had seemed a suitable fit for the newborn prince’s development. nadia, the gerudo woman who was his true mother, had enforced limitations upon what she could do with ganondorf, how she could raise him, and her influence upon him. she may have been his mother, she may have carried him within her and brought him into the world, but it was his own destiny that would pull them apart, and bring him instead to the twinrova.
nadia swore to do everything in her power to guide him onto the path to bring their people to glory---including letting go of him as her child. thus did the twinrova step into the fold, instructed by the queen to see to his studies, his upbringing, and the knowledge of his role.
ganondorf has never, truly, seen either koume or kotake as mother figures. teachers. guardians. enemies. their means were often selfish and cruel, though to the benefit of the gerudo’s reigning queen, no one was aware of what occurred within the spirit temple when they were left to their devices. the young prince walked upon their experiments and vile acts more often than not, and after a point, they merely gave up in shielding him from it, for the dark magics were to be as part of him as it was them.
the twinrova are spoken of as mothers in title than in affectionate utterance. after nadia was stripped her son, and they were forcibly kept apart, ganondorf was conditioned to refer to koume and kotake as his mothers out of respect for their service in caring for him, and to acknowledge their role in his meticulous upbringing. however, in adulthood, he would not bat an eye if they were to die. and when link does indeed slay them, ganondorf feels nary a shred of grief for their loss.
