A couple of general gif-making tips for anyone trying out the craft!

When resizing your footage, always leave yourself a couple of pixels for margins.

I see a lot of people make this mistake when it comes to making gifs, where they resize their footage to the exact dimensions of the end gif. However, that almost always results in the pixels closest to the outside border going semi-transparent, which when saved as gif results in gifs having these tiny 'borders'.

I zoomed in a bit, but you can see that the outer edge has a line. Those are the semi-transparent pixels.

To avoid that AND leave yourself some wiggle room when it comes to moving screenshots or cropping, resize your footage to the target dimensions and add +2, +4 or +10 pixels to the number. After resizing you can then crop away the margins which will result in cleaner edges and will get rid of the transparent border.

For example, tumblr's full-post width is 540px so if I were resizing say 1080p footage, I'd put the width as 544px or 550px and then crop the edges (I use canvas size option for this) to 540px.

Make sure to use proper dimensions!

Tumblr will automatically resize your gifs to set dimensions and if your gifs are shorter or wider than those sizes, you will lose quality and sharpness in your gifs.

Ava (@anya-chalotra) has an excellent guide on dimensions and gif sharpness (as well as some other excellent information in giffing department) that goes into exact numbers.

I mostly make gifs that are full width, so they're always 540px wide.

Be aware of the size limit

According to tumblr's own guide, the general max limit is 10MB. However, anything over 3MB will be compressed by tumblr. That can result in quality loss, but most gif-makers ignore the compression and try to 'squeeze' out as much as possible out of a gif.

Some tips on how to lower your gif size to fit within the limit:

Reduce the number of frames.

Try to restrict the colors used to a selection (I usually try to have one or two dominant colors). Gif format only supports 256 colors anyway, so if you try to include all the colors of the rainbow, things might look wonky anyway.

Darken parts of your gif (usually brighter gifs tend to take up more space, so adding some darker shades can help reduce the file size).

What actions and settings do you use for your gifs? They look so nice and clear, without any grain or static!

oh thank you! honestly I don't use any actions at this point, I just make sure I make gifs from the highest quality files I can find so they look good for those 540 px gifs. then I try to adjust my psd to fit the scene I'm giffing and in a way that the colors aren't too different from each other to help keep it cohesive with the limit of 256 colors on ps, the more colors you have on your gif the harder it will be for it to be clean because of the 256 limit. also tumblr has a 10mb limit but gifs with a lot of frames and closer to 10mb tend to be more grainy (can't really tell you why tho it's just something I've noticed) so if you do want to make more colorful gifs it's a good idea to keep them as light as possible on the number of frames. oh and before saving the gif I usually sharpen it a bit with smart sharpen to help it be a bit more clear (but this REALLY depends on the file you're using, but def something I've used while giffing xena and buffy).

other than that I use vapoursynth to help me cut the scenes I want etc prior to importing it to ps, you can find a tutorial for it here. it's the fastest method I've found for scene selection and what I've been using for the past 4(?) years or so, it's pretty intuitive once you get used to it and you can resize your scene on it before importing it to ps which saves a lot of time. but keep in mind that this isn't a magical tool and without the stuff above it will be hard to make clearer gifs.

so to recap:

make sure the file you're giffing is the highest quality you can find (specially if you plan to do 540px gifs)

make sure the colors are cohesive in your gifs since 256 colors is the max for gifs (2 major colors that contrast each other is fine btw, more than that can become too noisy though.) I can't stress this one enough! to me it's even more important than highest quality files because most of the time if the colors are nice people won't notice if it's grainy or not, but nice colors also make the gifs look higher quality than they really are (this can be tricky depending on the scenes you're giffing tho and I hate to say it but it's something that comes with practice, color theory helps a lot tho)

if possible, try to avoid making heavy gifs (close to 10mb) as it can compromise the quality of your gif (sometimes you just gotta say fuck it tho bc the gif won't work with less frames)

try using smart sharpen and see if it improves your gif! (my usual settings are | Amount: (varies depending of the scene) | Radius: 0,3 (I never change this one) | Reduce Noise: 0 (really don't recommend using this because it will blur out your details but it's up to you)

#I wish I could give more tips when it comes to coloring but it's something that it's very intuitive for me at this point and it's hard to #explain for me because I don't think about my thought process when I'm doing it I just do it yk askdjh #but it's definitely something that came with practice! also painting etc is something that improved that for me because I know which colors #go well together and which ones should be toned down for the most part - I still make mistakes sometimes but yeah #sorry that's very long but I hope it's helpful! if you want me to explain anything in more detail lmk #ask

Hello, it’s me again the one who is very struggling with making gifs. Can you show me a tutorial of your gif making process, like from A to Z? So I can learn from it and try one last time cause I’m losing my shits.

hey there!

tbh I’m not the best at explaining but I hope my humble tutorial will help you. Also, I referenced from the tutorials @usergif a lot. It is my go to when i need tutorial or help :)

Shoutout to all the amazing gif/content creator out there! Also if any of my content creator moots have any helpful guides, please do leave it under the reply ❤️

Firstly, i’ll have my scenes to gif ready. I either use VLC player or Quick Time player to screen record ( i’m very basic lol). Then I open Photoshop and here goes.

1. File > Import > Video frames to layers. And then I’m gonna choose the file that I’ve trimmed from screen recording and choose the part I want to gif first (circled in screenshot)

2. Then you can see the amt of layers, you can play and see which part you want (if it’s a LOT of layers) to delete because too many = exceeding 10mb limit for Tumblr

I have my own theory 🧐 that for certain size, only a certain amount of layers will fall within Tumblr 10mb limit size. I mainly use these 3 sizes to crop so: square (max 45-50), 1028px (max 60-65), 1280px (max 70-80). if you’re doing extensive colouring/gradients/blending etc this needs to be further limited so that it doesn’t exceed 10mb. Crop sizes I usually use:

3. Set frame delay. I click on the 3 lines > Select All Frames. Click on 1 of the layer dropdown > Other > 0.05s. Tip: you can set at 0.03s and then after you’re done with your gif, you can re-time it to 0.05s, it’ll be smoother but I’m lazy so I just do at 0.05s.

From this steps onwards, it will be very long. I made an action for myself where I click on the play button and it’ll automate for me but idk how to share this with you 😭 so bear with me for the steps.

4. Click on the 3 lines again > Convert to Video Timeline

5. Select > All Layers

6. Filter > Convert for Smart Filters. And then you have a single layer like below:

7. Now we go to Sharpening. I refer from usergif tutorial on sharpening (you can follow the tutorial!) I tweak it around to my preference and use high pass instead of vivid.

For high pass if you want to try. Filter > Other > High Pass > 4.0 radius. Then you want to double click on the line beside high pass, Mode: Soft Light, Opacity: 80%

8. Next! The fun part. Colouring!! (I’m not an expert at this because I play around a lot) All my sets are coloured from scratch but I use this settings for easier colouring. It can very long if it’s a difficult scene to colour. This tutorial from usergif tutorial is very helpful!

9. Then I will resize this. Image > Image size > Width: 540 px

actually tho it would be nice if tumblr stopped gaslighting us by saying the gif limit is 10MB when it is clearly 9.5MB with like maybe 10-30 additional bytes max

hey, do y'all have any resources/tutorials/advice for gif making, ideally for tumblr? i want to make some of my own edits but i always run into issues of things like file sizes and not knowing what the ideal image dimensions would be or other ways i could probably be cutting corners

hey! i'd love to help - the fact is that there are tons of tutorials on tumblr so making one of our own would probably be counterproductive. probably the best way to look for some helpful tutorials is on blogs that focus on being a source for anything gifmaking/photoshop related, like @completeresources (check out their handy tutorial page here), @allresources, @pscentral, @usergif to name a few from the top of my head!

any specific issues you have, i'm willing to help you with - when it comes to image dimensions, the most important part is to stick to the correct width to ensure your gifs show up on the dashboard with the highest quality. the most simple way to put it is that the max width is 540px, and adding gifs next to each other will create a gutter between them of ~4px. this tutorial contains a nice example which i think should help you visualise this!

and for file size, anything under 10mb should work! (i find for square 540px gifs, the frame limit is usually around 55-70 frames before it reaches 10mb, but it very much depends on the gif)

hope there's some info here that helps you, or that at least you'll know where to look! in all honesty, i thought myself most of what i know about gifmaking, but it can save you so much time to look for some good tutorials to help you!

Month 5, day 26—yes it's 26, I haven't gone to bed yet, it still counts!!!!—and I've finished up the actual animation on chibi!Cuff! :D Also did some layer cleanup and cropped the canvas size so I have a little more layers to play with. Might decide to shrink the aspect ratio and see if that gives me even more maximum layers or if ProCrate just hard-maxes me out at 400. Idk, we'll see!

Unfortunately those last ten frames of animation put me over the 10mb limit to upload gifs to Tumblr, so, have an MP4 instead :D

would you ever post your gifs in higher quality somewhere?

Hi, not sure which gifs of mine you have seen. I started giffing only in Jan 2020 and up till Nov 2020 my gifs were not great cos I had not learnt Photoshop yet. So if u have only seen my old gifs they do look grainy.

But for my newer gifs, I don't have any higher quality hidden in my computer 😂 what you see is the highest quality I can achieve at my current level. I still have much to learn in coloring.

I'm not sure how much about giffing you know, gif is actually not very size efficient compared to video. The larger the dimension or the longer the gif, the file size gets quite large.

Old Tumblr limitation was 2mb, I really respect the giffers from that time who could keep their gifs to such a small size! Current Tumblr limit is 10mb but I personally try to keep it to 5-8mb especially if it's a large gifset. (because it takes longer to load and people may scroll past)

In terms of dimensions I follow Tumblr guidelines and make gifs of max 540 pixels width.

I think Tumblr is trying out converting gif to short videos (recent) I've not tried it myself.

Also, I'm not aware of any better places to post gifs and gifsets? Do share if u know of any.

I personally love gifs and giffing. Gif is special because seeing a scene, or a part of a scene, relentlessly repeating makes you notice things you may never have noticed and endears you more to the character (I love Elsa and Anna like crazy) I love the process of giffing and cutting the scene exactly where I want it. I find myself laughing to myself often when cutting it a particular way leads to hilarious results 😂 and as I have previously shared I love coloring especially Anna's hair. I know this is weird but giffing has also caused me "heartache" many times. I don't mean I was in pain or sad. I mean I was touched so deeply that I just feel so moved about my favorite character.

yep i do! first of all you’d need to have some sort of a software to create your gifs with. i do everything on photoshop so i won’t be able to be of much help for any alternative methods 😢

when it comes to giffing, everyone has their own method that works for them, there’s no 1 set way to go about it so don’t be afraid to play around and experiment as much as possible to discover what you like! i get inspiration all the time from all the creations i come across on here 💜

really, just have fun with it!! there are no rules (except for a few lol) ✨✨

before you even gif you’ll need to make sure you’re able to source high quality downloads bc that is really the key to everything - here’s an ask i answered where i linked some resource posts for giffing dramas

sharing my typical workflow below to give you an idea of the steps involved. you’d probably be able to look up more detailed tutorials for each step or you can always DM me if you need more specific help :)

1) download the video file making sure it's minimally at least 1080p for the best quality gifs

2) pick out the moment you wanna gif and identify the timecodes (to give you an idea depending on the file 4 seconds of video would usually translate to around 99 frames)

3) trim those moments using some sort of a clipping software (or i think you can also do this directly using ps), i use handbrake for this purpose

4) when cropping and resizing, i prefer to do it using vapoursynth bc i find it a lot more efficient and i have more control over maintaining the same framing across gifs. but again, you can do this directly in ps if you prefer and don't wanna learn how to use a bunch of different software 😝

5) for resizing, it’s very important to use the correct tumblr post dimensions or tumblr might resize it for you and the gifs you worked so hard on could end up looking pixelated after posting! here’s the recommended widths for photoset posts

6) and since i’ve already resized and cropped the clips in the previous steps, once i import the files into ps (file > import > video frames to layers), they can actually already be saved immediately as gifs (file > export > save for web)

7) but of course you probably won’t wanna stop there bc you wanna make sure your gifs actually look good! i recommend playing around with the smart filters to see what looks nice to you - to do this, first switch to timeline mode and then convert your layers for smart filters (select all layers > filter > convert for smart filters). the filter i highly recommend using (and is what most creators use) would be smart sharpen but you can also try out some of the others like camera raw filter, noise, etc.

8) once you’re satisfied, it’s time to colour!! i usually switch back to animation mode to do this (convert frames > flatten frames into clips > make frames from clips > convert to frame animation). the adjustment layers i typically use are curves, brightness/contrast, selective colour and levels but if you’re new at colouring, you can also make use of ready psds that people have already uploaded on tumblr and tweak them to your liking so that it suits the scene that you’re editing (the same exact colouring usually won’t work across every single scene/show). but just don't reupload the colouring and claim as your own!

9) final step before saving is to adjust the frame delay, some prefer their gifs a little faster/slower but i usually set mine at 0.05 bc i find that it’s most comfortable for the eyes

10) now you’re ready to save your gif 🙌 i usually save it in adaptive diffusion mode keeping the colours at the default max of 256. if you’re planning to upload onto tumblr, the file needs to be under 10mb or it won’t upload! so if you have trouble keeping your gif under the size limit, you’ll have to go back and cut down on the number of frames (i would remove frames from either the start or the end and avoid skipping any in between or your gif could end up looking “choppy”). alternatively, adjusting your colouring can sometimes help reduce the file size too (the lesser variation of colours in your gifs the smaller the file size).

Things I need to consider:

Legal restraints: Can i use music from relevant game? Or use from YoutubeLibrary? Can I post without monetizing? or risk copyright strike regardless? Doublecheck Transformative work and Derivative work IP Laws

Efficiency restrictions: Complication of scene? Too many characters? How simple is too simple? Can I reuse assets between projects? ways to efficiently simplify the shot as a single creator.

Logistical constraints: Suggested time for Shorts is 15 seconds, minute max with 10MB file size with 1920x1080 vertical resolution. Tumblr videos 10 minutes max or 500MB file size at 500x700 vertical resolution. Using YouTube Sound Effect catalogue limits video length to 15 seconds exactly? Check to see if same applies to YouTube Audio library.

1 second of animation is 12/24 frames professionally. 10sec/120-240 frames and 30sec/360-720 frames and etc. to keep in mind

Warframe animation shorts

warframe creator guidelines allows usage of their soundtrack and in game audio in passive advertisement content, but not for other projects not related to warframe.

ParkourFrame: empyrean NEZHA parkour takedown a corpus unit, skidding some flame trails, panning up his back as he comes to a stand, cut and Pan to face. Very detailed design, singular character, semi simple background, maybe a corpus hallway? 10 seconds?

BoardFrame: Yareli Kdriving, maybe kdrive dancing like longboard dancers. Maybe ask a mandachord artist if you can use their track with source and credit? Simplified design, singular character, could be on snowy hill path facing forward Simple parallax background slowly panning up with a minimal foreground. 15-16 seconds

RepairFrame: Warframe fishing for parts to help a vent kid with replacing a part that got messed up in a run, flashing back to catching them with other vent kids to stop her from falling off a cliff with a MOA clipped to her. Minimum 3 characters(WF VK MOA) simplified snow background, simplified vent kids chute, simplified cave fishing spot. Can attempt a motion comic style with minimal movement. Might be too complicated/extended storyline for a short, might make minute max. Try boarding it.

BOREDFrame: You wanna Nahhhh you wanna? Nahhhhhhh what about? NAAAAAAAAAHHHHH for warframe mission types then staying in orbiter. Decide on frames to be initiator and denier. super simplified Chibi maybe? Two character, maybe a grineer being shot. Multiple simplified backgrounds. 10 seconds

This is my A-Slot*look* this is my B-Slot *new look* this is my C-slot *newnew look* and this! is my d-slot >;3*look* 'Just pick one already before the void storm passes' 15 seconds?

BugFrame: Titania pranking people with little butterfly tickles or covering up their scope. Two characters plus butterfly and scoped weapon prop, one background. Can be minimal on-model. Can be about 8-10 seconds.

StoreFrame: Heavy breathing meme for new cosmetic and prime junk farming? Ehhh kinda not really impactful. 10 seconds. simple chibi simple chibified orbiter cockpit background

GoreFrame: Deimos landscape undulating while fighting worm with necramech. 30 seconds with a long windup time for worm movements. Maybe up to 45 seconds. Have a rough in blender already

OW: Deleted concepts due to current events. The year's worth of girl centered advertising and girl empowerment storylines does not leave a good taste in my mouth considering the allegations and lawsuits that were leveraged while these were in development.

A league of legends short Same boat as above, but they paid out their lawsuits. featuring a song from a character that didn’t get a trailer or that appeals to me. I can use some of the music safely due to champion and skin themes being added to creator safe playlists on SoundCloud. Songs with singers are contracted and can't be used.

Seraphine interacting with her (water scorpion?) spirit platform and showing an empath’s view of the world. Complex background angle, swooping from high vantage point and falling gracefully to impending doom at the ground. Simplify character design to make angle transition easier. Longest at a minute? Would be an undertaking. cannot monetize due to singer contract

Space groove blitzcrank offering an Uber ride to space groove Samira with some groovy shoulder action, maybe her skating on some planetary rings like a waterskier. Two characters, Two angles of one background for most of scene then pan to multiple scenes briefly as blitz’s arm pans through them. 20-30 second timeframe? From very beginning it is exactly 40 seconds. Could cut out roughly first 12 seconds, so 28 seconds? Try to find a good looping point for viewability. could make into a trailer for a longer video if time constraint too strong.

KDA Allout Kaisa dancing and breaking and shattering stuff. Chorus, one character, semi complicated background. Look into particles. About 14 seconds just dumdedum chorus? cannot monetize due to singer contract

Rell song was added to dmca safe playlist! Can do either the running charge sound at the beginning for her dismounting (exactly 15 seconds for a good loop point, maybe 25 for the heavy drums) simple if just her charging, blurred out and far away, camera adjusts to see her intense look on the back of her horse. or the “im coming for you now with fiiiiiire, never lose a fighter bit(2:54-3:22 would be 28 seconds). Could go with a lot of noise and wave to simulate her 4, complex depending on fight choreography (one big unit? Bunch of smaller units?) Big fan of her aesthetic

MECH&CYBORG explorations

Some shorts based off of IchiMegamix with different IGPX teams? Definitely want to explore mech animation , either with 3d or 2d. Do Not Monetize At All. IP is licensed by CC/CN. Music is licensed through Sony library I think, could maybe check adult swim’s music use guidelines. Otherwise YoutubeLibrary

Getting fouled into a yellow flag yield so repair unit can come in, get one last petty ding in as it’s getting reeled up, show characters being salty little competitive children. Seven characters max(teams and repair unit) with “speech bubbles” of pilots heads coming out. Determine complexity in boarding. repeated movement in background and foreground,15 seconds

Edge raid acting like a pack of wild dogs and ganging up and dragging people with their wires.

Skylark team coasting and drag drifting with wind trails visible. 3 identical mechs with color differences on accent panels.repeated motion background based on track. 15 seconds.

Zoids idea exploration/appreciation. YouTube Library, Do not monetize to respect IP being used in videos unless very very transformative.

New paint job?

Raptorzoid clawing open another pilot’s zoid.

Longe range Sniper wolf zoid. Shooting at a megazoid

Medium sized modern zoids like sport car sized hares? Reptile themed zoids like snakes, monitor lizards, horny toads, and smaller skink zoids that swim/bury themselves in the sand. more desert themed zoids with clear parts. Tarantula or trapdoor spider zoids. 5 seconds for each type, roughly 35 seconds from listed, with no interactions, just robotic animals, maybe pilots.

Bird based zoids like gliders with extra propulsion, lots of sheen and glare doing an aerial dogfight. Hawk and pigeon/songbird themed? Big predatory zoid with a smaller zoid piggybacking on it. Could be bird (swallow?) themed, could be bats or cicadas or other wall clingers, but clinging to canyon wall? 6 seconds for the take off, 6 seconds for the piggyback ride, 10+ for the aerial dogfight

Waterbear satellite repair silicone softzoid (vtuber mascot? Partial to it personally. big squish factor. could give up front clear visor for more squishy aerogel and use cameras beacons, magnets, clasping/hugging the satellite to for outward mobility. 10 seconds with it latching onto the outside and releasing the pilot to work on something. Lots of emphasis on the jiggle physics, three characters if satellite is included, a couple backgrounds of bare space and atmospheric shots of planet. Aerogel right now is partially transparent, like foggy glass.

RISKY WATERS: Anything Disney, don't monetize at all to be safe. Check for updates and permissions for following: Oban original and sequel, SRMTHFG dance short.

TVS CREW: fan art appears to be appreciated, but check if would be lore accurate, and if ok to post on my channel or submit to theirs. Could just do the lines/backgrounds, and offer to let community color it. Current known lore is CoDee=coffee maker, HaiDee=music player/DAW, LAEDEE is solar powered, False and EYEDEE are interchangably the same entity, but False runs the show(one or both of them have a malicious compliance bug). Also catdragonandroid reine is honorary crew

False assimilating an EYEDEE unit. 3 characters with EYEDEE potentially being a mob character that only one gets converted. Check if establishing V-U collector cell as canon lore.GOFOR(GeoOrbital Fetch or Retrieval)becomes original intern EYEDEE (Enigmatic Yesman Everyman), sent to False to either replace or send his battery/database to the surface of earth. Has his original programming suppressed and replaced with false who benignly? Copies his own code into the unit. Collects the data from the EYEDEE, then willingly hands over his cell under agreement that they generate more power using Eyedee’s V-U Cell. Reine shows up. 40-58 seconds? might be too complicated. Motion Comic practice?

False and EYEDEE almost losing to a short haired LAEDEE (loss aversion engineering) unit. Both underpowered from running on half power, LAEDEE unit generating cool tech. Reine shows up. Conflict resolution and contract generated. New long haired cohost look generated. 30-35 seconds

Willing relinquishing of duties by False to better allocate power. False says I’ll be Back to bring more news, Soon. Reine says it’s a shame they’re putting the hot one to rest. 20 seconds?

Starlink Installation Congleton.

Here we have a starlink installation carried out by Andy and Ethan in Congleton.

Customer in this case had a max speed of 10mbs from BT which in some cases is enough but with now both working from home and quite a large bungalow at that the stretch on the internal mesh was pushed to its very limits.

Ordered starlink and arrived within a week and had been up and running on patio for a week and contacted us to make a more permanent installation.

Initially they wanted the dish up on the chimney along with a new Tv aerial from us as well but after a discussion realised best to keep away from the log burner and fix to the wall on a galvanised wall bracket and alloy mast, we installed a new Tv aerial up on the chimney and fed that along with starlink cable into the loft space.

Dish was up and running and 190mbs streaming out into the existing mesh setup in the loft so a very happy client.

I purchased Apowersoft Streaming Audio Recorder and Streaming Video Recorder in May 2014.
