My current Libby App listen: “Tom Stoppard: A Life.” If you can make it past the dense first chapter of mostly begats and extended family goings-on, it develops into an intriguing biography of the great British playwright.
Like the “MCU” history that I listened to earlier, I already own a physical copy of the book, but it’s much more entertaining to listen to it.

For One Night Only: David at the RSC Fringe Festival (oh, and one other thing he probably didn't do...)
For today's post in "obscure things David Tennant did way back when," we'll need to travel back in time to the late 1990s. It was a busy time for David. By May 1997, he'd just wrapped up his first Royal Shakespeare Company repertory season (in which he simultaneously played Touchstone in As You Like It, Jack Lane in The Herbal Bed, and Alexander Hamilton in The General From America). This set of three plays had begun their runs in Stratford in early- to mid 1996; they then transferred over to London's Barbican Theatre, where they had ended their runs by mid-1997.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Programmes for The Herbal Bed, As You Like It, and The General From America
Next on David's theatre agenda was the role of Mickey in Hurlyburly (a play I've talked about before) which ran at the Queen's Theatre in London from August to November 1997. He then performed a one-off staged reading of Derek Jarman's Blue at the Chelsea Arts Theare on 16 November 1997 (which, by the way, is another little-known DT performance I want to explore!)
That was it for 1997, theatre-wise.
Then, beginning in March of 1998 - as I've explored previously - he began his run as Moon and Brindsley Miller in The Real Inspector Hound/Black Comedy. This double bill ran first at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Surrey and then in London, first at the Richmond Theatre and then at the Comedy Theatre. That play finally wrapped in August 1998.
But a month before wrapping The Real Inspector Hound/Black Comedy, David had popped over to Stratford to do something interesting, something that's the focus of this thread. It was called For One Night Only, and - as it says on the tin - it was, indeed, for one night only!
First, though? A little history!
Around 1990, the RSC began to hold an annual summer festival called the Royal Shakespeare Company Fringe Festival. Intended as a showcase for RSC talent, it included a mix of events: short plays, devised pieces, stand-up comedy, concerts, etc., as well as new works making their Stratford debut. The festival lasted two weeks and saw actors, directors, stage managers, musicians and staff all taking part in more than 25 events. All the events were either on Sundays, or timed around RSC productions, so audiences could go see fringe shows after seeing the actors perform in their usual RSC roles.
Most of the events for 1998's festival took place in a specially adapted 100-seat rehearsal room at the RSC's 'alternative' theatre, The Other Place. But not all of them. Their opening night event - on Sunday, 19 July - was to take place at the Swan Theatre.
That opening night event? For One Night Only!
Starring Desmond Barrit, Emma Handy, and Amanda Harris as well as David, the launch event cost £4-£12 and began at 7:30 pm. It was called a "curtain raiser" as well as "aptly-named."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And just what was it about? Well, um....I know it was organized and compiled by its star, Desmond Barrit...and that it was supposed to take its audience on a journey through the theatre. These articles say so.
But that's about all I know. I wish I had more details.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am, however, supremely lucky to own a piece of ephemera about this one night only event.
Here's the front and back of my For One Night Only flyer, and as I'm sure you'll notice, it promises "an evening of theatrical prose and poetry...and a little gossip!"
Great. Could you tell us a bit more, thanks?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While researching For One Night Only, I came across something else of interest, which I thought for a moment David might have been involved in - an event staged nine days before For One Night Only. But after researching this event in more detail, I don't think he was involved, after all. Such a shame, really. He would've been perfect!
On Friday, 10 July 1998, at 1 pm in the afternoon, some Royal Shakespeare Company members got together to do a fund raiser and preview of the upcoming Fringe in the forecourt of the Other Place. Called a Sonnetathon, this three-hour event featured various RSC members reading all 154 of Shakespeare's sonnets!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now a Sonnetathon would've been right up David's alley, am I right? He'd have loved it! But I'm about 99% certain he wasn't there - and here's why. That Friday night at 7:30 pm, David was onstage in The Real Inspector Hound/Black Comedy at the Comedy Theatre in London, that's why!
But here's why I say 99%. It's not impossible to imagine he got up early that Friday (after doing a show the night before) and took the train in to Stratford to do the Sonnetathon - wrapped it up by 4pm, then hopped on another train back to London in time to make the 7:30 curtain up for The Real Inspector Hound/Black Comedy.
But you have to admit, it seems unlikely.
But The Real Inspector Hound/Black Comedy wasn't showing on Sunday, 19 July 1998, so David was able to get to Stratford and go onstage as part of 'For One Night Only' to open the Fringe...and then get back to London in time to go onstage once more the following night.
So now you know what I know about For One Night Only.
Of course I'll keep looking for more!

Hybrid Class Review: Investigator part 3
Tumblr media
(art by LaminIllustration on DeviantArt)
Archetypes
The investigator boasts an interesting set of archetypes, so let’s dive right in! I tend to divide these archetypes into four categories.
Perhaps the first group I’d like to go over are those investigators that are still expressly detectives while dropping the alchemy in favor of other specializations. Perhaps none is more iconic here than the sleuth, which feels like it was made specifically to be a non-specialized detective that drops alchemy entirely in favor of having a pool of luck to help them through the day. Meanwhile, the Jinyiwe focuses on divine mandate and gains spells from such a source, while the Psychic Detective instead uses psychic magic and their sensitivity to gain clues and insights as well as defend themselves. Scavengers also exist which use quasi-magical gadgets instead of alchemical potions, and the Questioner augments their interviews with bardic magic. Additionally, Spiritualists (the archetype, not the class) channel the spirits of the dead to gain answers, while Malice Binders turn witchcraft lore against the wicked.
Of course, some investigators keep the alchemy while still having their own specializations as detectives. Bonded Investigators make use of a familiar ally, for example, while Steel Hounds are never without their trusty firearms. Ciphers investigate by being supernaturally unnoticeable by those that would stop them, while Cult Hunters and Infiltrators both finds ways to find and put a stop to secret societies and insular groups. Others specialize in gleaning secrets from the dead, such as Gravediggers and Dread Investigators, though their methods differ. Empiricists use unfailing logic to defeat deception and trickery, while Profilers use psychological profiles to determine suspects. Forensic Physicians are trained to glean secrets from the dead in a more mundane manner, while Skeptics use their keen senses and knowledge of parlor tricks to reveal fake hauntings and deal with the real ones. Meanwhile, Guardians of Immortaility, Lepidstadt Inspectors, and Ruthless Agents are known for their dogged pursuit of their goals. Finally, Hallucinists use mind-altering substances to reveal the truth, while Lamplighters reveal with alchemical light sources.
Of course, there are some so-called “investigators” that actually deserve investigation of their own, notably the Conspirators, who hide their activities and deceive others, and the Masterminds, master manipulators that can coach their allies on plans in advance.
While plenty of investigator characters may not actually be professional detectives, some of these archetypes are expressly not that while still using their brilliant intellect. Some are scholars and archaeological collectors, such as Antiquarians, while others study mysterious beasts like Cryptid Scholars. Meanwhile, Cartographers and Star Watcher, who study their charts for very different effects, are also a possibility. Engineers create inspired devices, while Holomog Demolitionists destroy with shocking precision and cunning. Utterly ignored but shockingly competent is the Majordomo, who serves dutifully and organizes those under them to great effect, while Tekritanin Arbiters put their brilliant minds to resolving conflict. Natural Philosophers meanwhile study nature directly, while Portal Seekers study the realms beyond the natural. Finally, Reckless Epicureans test their experimental formulae on themselves, while Toxin Codexers specialize in understanding poisons even beyond the standard investigator’s knowledge.
As you can see, these archetypes come in all shapes and sizes, but all in the end fall back on the core theme of the investigator, which is finding the truth. That truth may be the mysteries of a crime or misdeed, or they may be more esoteric such as scientific advancement, occult mysteries, and beyond.
That does it for today, but tomorrow I’ll share some thoughts on the class as a whole.

Persona 5 AU | v: Take Over
An AU where Naoto is closer to the Phantom Thieves in age because everyone loves having two detectives.
She can be an NPC with little effect on the story, only a Confidant or a Phantom Thief member. There’s no need to follow this strictly if you wish to plot something different from what’s mentioned. Subject to change as I understand the AU more, forgive me lol.
Age: 18, 3rd year. Does not attend Shujin, Kosei or Akechi’s school.
Arcana: Fortune
Codename: Hound
Melee Weapon: ???
Ranged Weapon: A REAL GUN (Revolver)
Persona: Laelaps → Cerberus → Fenrir
While still known as the Detective Prince in this verse, it quickly becomes a title she shares with another high school detective, Akechi Goro. Thanks to his charisma and willingness to hold interviews, he quickly becomes the more popular out of the Detective Prince duo, and it doesn’t help that she prefers to stay out of the spotlight, along with her annoyance when greeted with reporters and fans.
As she doesn’t have many clients compared to her canon counterpart, her grandfather used his connections and struck a deal with the Tokyo PD, allowing her to take their cases, even though she is a private investigator. The usual limits apply, such as the fact that she can’t arrest anyone. She’s not thrilled to be given the scraps instead of high profile cases, but with Akechi dominating the detective sphere, she’ll take what she can get. Being mistaken for a police inspector instead of a Shirogane detective is but a major annoyance.
The peculiar nature of the mental shutdowns piques her interest, enough that she conducts her own investigation with the scant free time she has, even if Akechi is handling it and all confidential information is unavailable to someone like herself.
After Kamoshida’s confession, the principal hires Naoto to come check the school, mostly to ease the student’s worries—an empty gesture on his part—and keep the school’s reputation stable.
Throughout the investigation, Naoto remains skeptical of the Phantom Thieves. No matter how many news outlets report on them, she feels no need to look further. Once the Phantom Thief craze begins to pick up, the media asks for her opinion on them. Knowing how they reacted to Akechi’s less than satisfactory answers, Naoto lies, saying she’s still in the beginning stages of her own investigation. Miraculously satisfied, they leave, and in order to turn a lie into a truth, she begins looking deeper.
She stumbles onto a conspiracy.
She eventually—well, forced to, really—gives her own thoughts. She doesn’t condemn the Thieves outright, but doesn’t praise them either. They’re an interesting bunch. For now, they seem to work for the public’s benefit. However, if they cross a certain line, she won’t hesitate to track them down.
She doesn’t mention the conspiracy, or the possible thread between the shutdowns and the change of heart. She’d rather not be erased.
If there’s something Naoto’s certain of, it’s that something sinister is occurring behind the scenes.
NPC
The most she’ll be involved with the plot is her appearance at Shujin after Kamoshida’s confession. Her investigation into the conspiracy is a separate matter, but since it involves the Metaverse and other things, she won’t get very far, naturally. If she becomes acquainted with the Thieves, she’ll be none the wiser. Can switch into a Confidant and PT route if desired.
Confidant
She somehow manages to find out the Thieves’ identity. Various reasons can include somehow finding herself in the Metaverse by accident, agreeing to be a secret keeper, etc. I have no default setup yet.
Benefits:
Knowing what to say for other Confidants — Shamelessly stolen from Chihaya.
Probably gives some Mementos Requests
Chance to knock down a random number of enemies after a successful ambush — Only available if Naoto is a party member.
Phantom Thief
Promotion from secret keeper to member. While the change of heart is a method she disagrees with, there’s no better alternative to force a change into the world. Can become one with the same reasons as the Confidant. I have no default setup yet.
Persona / In depth info here and here
Laelaps
The Greek dog best known for being able to catch everything it hunted. Paired with the Teumessian fox, which could never be caught, and you have a paradox, trapped in a vicious cycle. Naoto will break out of it one day, hopefully. Appears as a black dog with glowing red eyes and accompanied by blue flame.
Cerberus
Bound to the House of Hades but is able to do as he sees fit with those attempting to cheat death. Although she’s still bound to the expectations society has, Naoto grows more confident in pursuing the justice she seeks.
Fenrir
A large wolf chained to a rock until Ragnarök, where he will break free from his chains and go on a rampage until killed. Represents how Naoto breaks from the paradox surrounding Laelaps. She’s much more confident in her ability to live up to the family name and follow in their footsteps, and of course, there’s little stopping her in pursuing her justice.
Quick Headcanons:
Doesn’t disguise herself as a guy, although she keeps her hair short and wears masculine clothing. There wasn’t a point in keeping up an act she’d discard eventually.
One of her quests involves a certain fortune teller in Shinjuku. It’s a long one.
Her ideal reality in 3rd Semester involves her deceased parents being... not so deceased anymore.
You can gift her model kits, yippie
More to be added in here, you know how it is

Granada TV Series Review: "The Red-Headed League" (S02, E05)
Tumblr media
This week, I come to what is surely one of the most delightful episodes of the entire series of adaptations from Granada TV! "The Red-Headed League" has long been a favorite story of most Sherlockians, and was on a list of Arthur Conan Doyle's favorite Holmes stories as well. The Granada adaptation shows Jeremy Brett at the absolute top of his game, and is a real treat for any viewer. Fans of British comedy will certainly recognize the actors playing John Clay (Tim McInnerny from the popular Black Adder series), and Duncan Ross (Richard Wilson from One Foot in the Grave).
This episode really has it all: humor, adventure, and as always, the rapport between Holmes and Watson, played to such great effect by Jeremy Brett and David Burke. The episode give Sherlockians so much to enjoy, including Holmes's reference to the famous "three pipe problem" and the great shot of Jeremy Brett, knees up and smoking, a picture perfect reference to a Sidney Paget illustration from the original story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are so many entertaining moments from this episode, but a couple stood out for me, one of which was Jeremy Brett's leap over the settee as Watson enters towards the beginning of the episode, accompanied by a shout of "You couldn't have come at a better time!" (Fans of the I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere podcast will recognize the clip immediately from their intro sequence.) And then there's the reaction from Holmes and Watson as Mr. Jabez Wilson concludes his tale. Brett and Burke burst into laughter, which can hardly be helped, as Mr. Wilson tells them all the words he learned, transcribing the first volume of the Encyclopaedia Brittanica. Little moments of humor, some from the original story and others not, make the episode tremendously entertaining.
The episode also serves as a setup for the next week's conclusion to the first series, "The Final Problem." We get several scenes with Professor Moriarty, as well as fairly lengthy sequence in the bank vault, wherein Holmes and Inspector Jones discuss Moriarty's role in London crime. All this material, of course, is not from the source material, as "The Red-Headed League" was only the second Holmes adventure published in The Strand magazine, and "The Final Problem" came much later. But in the continuity of this first series from Granada, it works quite well to prepare the viewer for the big series finale.
As I prepare myself to watch "The Final Problem" next week, it's a bit of a bittersweet moment, as I know that episode also represents the final episode for David Burke as Dr. Watson. I enjoy Burke's Watson portrayal immensely. I don't know that Edward Hardwicke, who ended up playing the good doctor for much longer than Burke did, ever quite matched up to Burke's version. Harwicke was no slouch, of course, and he brought plenty of good moments to the role himself, but I suspect Burke will always occupy a special place in my heart.
As I continue this project of watching and reviewing all of the Granada Sherlock Holmes adaptations, I know that the quality of the series will have its ups and downs. As Jeremy Brett's health grew worse and worse over time, the overall quality tends to decline...or so I've always read. (And, having seen some of the later episodes, particularly the adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles, I'm inclined to agree with that appraisal.) Meanwhile, it's a marvelous experience to watch all of the episodes in order, and to be able to enjoy the performances when they were at the excellent level of "The Red-Headed League." It was truly a real gift to legions of Holmes fans. Please enjoy watching the episode below...

During my years in high school (1976-80), we mounted Dark of the Moon (in which I played Mrs. Summey), Godspell (which, no surprise, I stayed strictly away from), The Man Who Came to Dinner, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Real Inspector Hound, The Servant of Two Masters, and adaptations of Alice in Wonderland and Tom Jones. From earlier in the decade I can recall productions of The Birds (or was it The Frogs?), Brigadoon, The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, Little Mary Sunshine, Man of La Mancha, and The Matchmaker. The Bacchae was never an official production, but one year the advanced acting class took a program of choral excerpts from that play to the state speech competition, coming in second. Incidentally, cast members from my day included the novelist Susan Power, the journalist Maria Hinojosa, the filmmaker Adam Simon, and the actors Lothair Eaton, David Sinaiko, and Karl Wright.
It's hard to imagine any of that happening now. With almost any of those plays, there would be objections from right and left alike. Let's take Dark of the Moon: it depicts witches and witchcraft, and also portrays the Scots-Irish-descended people of the Southern Appalachians as ignorant and superstitious in the 1930s, so that's all very objectionable to some. At the same time, the play isn't unsympathetic to those Scots-Irish of the Southern Appalachians — and they were (are) the descendants of the country's largest class of slaveholders. Someone today is bound to find that oppressive.
Our drama teacher, known to us as Mrs. A (really, that's what we called her), was my mother's colleague for three decades; in fact, my mother was her department chairman (my mother's preferred term), for a total of about 10 years. As a result, I know of another reason why the type of play that we put on became hard to do. One evening in about 1992, sitting on our sofa a few feet from where I am now, Mrs. A shook her head and said that the new crop of students simply didn't have the verbal skills needed for the plays we did in the old days. So there's that.
Mrs A is still teaching. They did Oliver! this year. Another hornets' nest, that one, which is an encouraging sign.

You can find a lot of potential and eventually satisfied clients through networking and amicable relationships. This can better your reputation. Signing up for 봉선 한국아델리움57 디오브 is a great way to come across good deals on real estate. Look at it this way, as others are hounding clerks at a specific court or begging a bank for information you already know the who what when and where and can plan accordingly. These lists are usually current and can help you with your search. Be sure you're not going to be engaged in a time-sucking managerial nightmare. Time is money, so don't squander it. Try to avoid vacation rental properties, college apartments and run-down neighborhoods. You want to choose investment properties that have a solid history of tenancy. Avoid investing in properties that you aren't able to afford. If you buy a rental property, ensure that you will be able to pay your mortgage, even if a few of your units are empty. Your mortgage payment should never be entirely dependent on the income you make from your rentals. Do not let yourself be frightened away from the real estate market because you are inexperienced. Check your options and consider the benefits you could reap for you and your family. The concept of real estate investing can be a great way to generate profits, so listen up!

David Tennant Audios: Classic FM One Hundred Favorite Humorous Poems (1998)
You know David as a multi-faceted performer: theatre, film, television...and audio. And it's audio we'll talk about today. In the summer of 1998, David was quite busy. He was on the back end of his run of double-billed plays, The Real Inspector Hound and Black Comedy (click this link to read my in-depth look at the two plays!) at the Comedy (now the Harold Pinter) Theatre in London. The two plays ran through 8 August 1998.
But he certainly had time to contribute a set of fourteen poem readings to the audio book Classic FM One Hundred Favourite Humorous Poems. So, are you wondering what the rest of the story is behind this obscure set of readings? Want to know what happened after they were published, and - most importantly - if you can listen to them? For the answers to all these questions, pop on over to this post on my Substack, which is called A Tennantcy To Act. Over there you'll find a ton of all things Tennant: rare, obscure, trivia-based....you name it!
Subscribing is free, but if you don't want to, you don't have to (just click on the "Nope, take me to the posts" below the subscribe button!)

The Real Inspector Hound
My high school did a play called “The Real Inspector Hound”, and I’m sad that it is over, so I’ve decided to share with random people on the internet some of my favorite lines from the play, out of context (I highly recommend looking up the play, it’s very interesting). Also, picture these lines said with exaggerated British accents that my friend likes to call, “cartoon theatre kid accents”. (Btw, I played Magnus, who also had like, three other personas- it was complicated)
“When Higgs and I walk down this aisle to claim our common seat, the oceans will fall into the sky and the trees will hang with fishes.” -Moon
“Perhaps he’s dead at last, or trapped in a lift somewhere, or succumbed to amnesia, wandering the land with his trouser cuffs stuffed with ticket-stubs.” -Moon
“You can’t start with a pause! If you ask me, there’s total panic back there.” -Birdboot
“That a critic of my scrupulous integrity should be vilified and pilloried in the stocks of common gossip-” -Birdboot
“Should a stranger enter our midst, which I very much doubt, I will tell him you called. Goodbye.” -Mrs. Drudge
“Yes, many visitors have remarked on the topographical quirk in the local strata whereby there are no roads leading from the Manor, though there are ways of getting to it, weather allowing.” -Mrs. Drudge
“I think I must be waiting for Higgs to die.” -Moon
“Does he wait for Higgs and I to write each other’s obituary- does he dream-?” -Moon
“--For I am Moon, continuous Moon, in my own shoes, Moon in June, April, September, and no member of the human race keeps warm my bit of space- yes, I can tell by the way he nods.” -Moon
“The skeleton in the closet is coming home to roost.” -Birdboot
“You philandering coward!” -Felicity
“Are you suggesting that a man of my scrupulous integrity would trade his pen for a mess of pottage?! Simply because in the course of my profession I happen to have struck up an acquaintance-- that is to have, a warm regard, if you like, for a fellow toiler in the vineyard of greasepaint-- I find it simply intolerable to be pillified and viloried--” -Birdboot
“--To find myself the object of uninformed malice, the petty slanders of little men-- to suggest that my good opinion in a journal of unimpeachable integrity is at the disposal of the first coquette who gives me what I want-- a ladies man!--” -Birdboot
“I think she’s got her mouth open.” -Moon
“By jove, I think you’re right. Her mouth is open.” -Birdboot
“How long have you been a pedestrian?!” -Magnus
“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, Simon.” -Felicity
“There’s an old Canadian proverb, passed down from the Blackfoot Indians, which says: He who laughs last laughs longest.” -Magnus
“If I find that you have been untrue to me-- if I find that you have falsely seduced me from my dear husband Albert-- I will kill you, Simon Gascoyne!” -Cynthia
“Camps it around the Old Vic in his opera cloak and passes me the tat” -Moon
“Sometimes I dream that I’ve killed him!” -Moon
“Trim-buttocked, that’s the word for her.” -Moon
“Well, you fickle old bastard!” -Moon (BOSTARD, we liked to exaggerate)
“--I think we are entitled to ask-- and here one is irresistibly reminded of Voltaire’s cry, “Voila”-- I think we are entitled to ask-- Were is God?” -Moon
“William Herbert McCoy who as a young man meeting the madman in the street and being solicited for sixpence for a cup of tea, replied, “Why don’t you do a decent day’s work, you shifty bag of horse manure,” In Canada all those many years ago.” -Hound
“Yes, getting away with murder must be quite easy provided that one’s motive is sufficiently inscrutable.” -Moon
“Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” -Moon
“All right! I love your little pink ears, and you’re my own fluffy bunny-boo, now for God’s sake Myrtle, goodbye!” -Birdboot
“Stop making an ass of yourself. Come back.” -Moon
“I don’t need your twopenny Grubb Street prognostications- I have found something bigger and finer--” Birdboot
“Faites vos jeux. Rien ne va plus. Rouge et noir. Zéro.” -Magnus (place your bids. nothing is right. red and black. zero)
“Prior to that, Inspector, I also chanced to overhear a remark made by Miss Cunningham, no doubt in the heat of the moment, but it stuck in my mind as these things do, viz., “I will kill you for this, Simon Gascoyne!”“ -Mrs. Drudge
“...Only to discover that in this house was a man, Simon Gascoyne, who recognized the corpse as a man against whom you had held a deep-seated grudge!” -Magnus
“Puckridge! ...You cunning bastard.” -Moon
