"These works depict a dark aspect of human psychology and truly. universal issues related to gender-based violence and the representation of women's bodies." - Tayeba Begum Lipi
Below: Not For Me, 2018 - Stainless steel razor blades
Above: The Baby Frock, 2019 - Stainless steel razor blades and hanger
Tayeba Begum Lipi, born in Bangladesh, 1969
At first glance, Tayeba Begum Lipi's sculptural works seem almost wearable until you get close and see her provocative choice of material- razor blades. The stiletto shoes and the child-size dress speak to global concerns of violence against women and gender inequity. With their armour-like appearance, the items of clothing also challenge the objectification of women and patriarchal systems of control.

Two days before it was supposed to open, ROM officials told the four Palestinian American women about changes they wanted to make, according to artists Sameerah Hosam Ahmad and Malak Kanan. "They highlighted the word 'Palestine,' and they highlighted the word 'exiled,' and they basically said, 'This is going to need to change for us to be able to show your work,'" Ahmad said. "This was very disturbing. This is the reality of what happened to our peoples." A ROM spokesperson said in a statement the proposed changes were in light of "the current heightened sensitivities around the Israel-Hamas conflict and the pain and suffering of all involved communities." The artists refused.
An 18-hour sit-in and several other protests later, exhibit about death and mourning reopens in Toronto

Nothing worse than your grandparents asking if you’re bringing a boyfriend to the family’s annual deer hunt, and you getting a little ticked off bc you’ve been openly gay for the better part of a decade so you impulsively respond “no I’m bringing my girlfriend” and get a nice apologetic response but UH OH - you haven’t had anything resembling a serious date since before law school and that was like five years ago so now you have to pretend to break up with your alleged girlfriend right before the trip and act all sad about it the whole time which is definitely a much worse fate than just ignoring some vague homophobia, and now your cousins also want details and your parents are like wtf who the hell is this mystery girl, when ALL you really wanted was an excuse to quietly sit in a deer blind for a few hours in November, wrapped in blankets drinking spiked hot chocolate and pretending to look for deer.

"Red white and royal blue is too cringy" "heartstopper is too unrealistic" yeah maybe but so is every single other rom com under the sun. Why does queer media always need to be realistic and profound while straight stories get more freedom to be silly and fantastical?

Self-Portrait in Reclaimed Copper
Katheryn Wabegijig, b. 1979
Anishinaabe (Ojibwa/Odawa)
Ketegaunseebee/Garden River First Nation
Hammered pennies on stained wood, 2016
Katheryn Wabegijig of Ketegaunseebee/Garden River First Nation portrays herself as though framed in a Canadian penny. At its centre, the artist used a hammer and nail set to pound out the Queen's face and text on the copper pennies that form her silhouette. This laborious act was both an affirmation of copper as a highly significant material to the Anishinaabeg before European contact, and the artist's assertion of her strength as an Indigenous person freeing herself of the repressive effects of colonization.
