Subcultures Task

In groups we were given a task to research a subculture following our week 1 lecture, and answer the below questions. Our group was given the Grunge subculture.

The grunge subculture started in Seattle, Washington, and is otherwise known as The Seattle Sound. This style started in the early 80s and carried on Hippie values such as non-conformity and this was developed by heavy metal bands such as The Melvins, and Nirvana in the early 90s. Fashion consisted of a 'thift store' style, with lots of distressed clothing such as jeans. The plaid shirt was also a staple garment in this subculture, along with wearing combat boots which started the popularisation of doc Martens. This is a good example of how Grunge clothing still exists on our shelves today as Doc Martens are considered a classic trend and red plaid shirts are still popular.

This subculture's style hasn't evolved much over the years as second hand clothing and distressed clothing is still very popular. However I think the subculture has moved away from its original musical background and has changed into only a fashion style and it's no longer considered a lifestyle. Grunge made a comeback in 2013 where it was brought to NYFW and YSL added grunge elements to their runways. I think the grunge style is part of youth culture today still, but the main elements of the style such as second hand, distressed and over sized items have been updated so it often doesn't give the 'dirty' and dark aesthetic it had in the 1980s. These items were worn originally to be non-conforming with society however now this style is popular many actually wear it to conform with others who are sporting this trend.
