Creature Awaits #235
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Due to personal and work-related issues, I missed posting last week, so we're getting a double-post this week to make up for it. Apologies for the delay again! Hopefully things will be better again soon. : )
First, our final November camouflaged creature feature… : )

The Vietnamese Mossy Frog
Scientific Name: Theloderma corticale
Region: Northern Vietnam through southern Laos and China
Size: About 2.4" (~6.1cm) long
Interesting Notes: This beautiful little frog's bumpy skin and mottled markings help it seamlessly blend into mossy forest floors and lichenous rock facings alike.

What are these creatures? Mossy frogs (Theloderma corticale), which live in Southeast Asia. Weird and wonderful, yes?

Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad: Found in Korea, and Northeastern Russia and China, these frogs are very intelligent and have found their way through mazes with water as a reward at the end. They lack eardrums and vocal sacs – calling on the inhale instead of the exhale. When threatened, they will arch their head and limbs and then flip onto their back, exposing their brightly coloured stomachs to indicate that they are poisonous. Those toxins are accrued from the insects they eat and secreted in a milky substance from near their legs.
Vietnamese Mossy Frog: This frog’s main defense is camouflage; if it fails, they curl up into a ball and play dead. They hide in caves and in mountain streams carved into the limestone cliffs of Northern Vietnam, either in the water or in crevices in the walls. When breeding, males can project their calls up to 4 metres (13 feet) away, making them difficult to locate by sound. They lay 8-10 eggs in pairs hanging above a pool of water which tadpoles drop into as they hatch 1-2 weeks later.

Struggling, for once, not with anything health related. But maybe worse.
I'm trying to pick out a critter for what will be a new 24x24x60cm/18x18x24" terrarium.
I've got one earmarked for a cuban false chameleon - anolis barbatus, but the second one is giving me trouble. I was going to keep dart frogs, but I can't, I just can't deal with flightless fruit flies anymore. I hate them. I can't do it.
So!
- Do I go amphibian or reptile? - No snakes, unfortunately. - Nothing that needs uromastyx-levels of heat, and something that would prefer a taller enclosure. - Nothing that can only eat flightless fricking fruit flies - Not enthusiastic about feeding pinkies/mice/mammals or birds. - Low care needs are better than high, but I'm going to set up a misting system to make it easier on myself, so that leaves feeding and maybe lighting.
I've been looking at the following amphibians:
- Amazon Milk Frog (Trachycephalus resinfictrix) - Golden Bell Frog (Litoria aurea) - Red Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidrys)
I like Mossy Frogs (Theloderma corticale), but I think they need more water time than I can cope with. Maybe. Not off the list.
And reptiles:
- Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) - Turqoise Anole (Anolis grahami) - Sarasin Giant Gecko (Correlophus sarasinorum) - Leachie/Chewie Gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus/Mniarogekko chahoua)
I don't know.
Amphibians seem more difficult to me than the reptiles, but those Red Eyes are gorgeous, and I've pondered Gold Bells in the past. Milk Frogs are sweet.
Reptile-wise, Sarasin's seem hard to find here.
I'm aware Tokay's have a reputation for being aggressive and that they can bite, but I'm really not interested in handling an animal that doesn't particularly want to be handled. Might make a good contrast to the Cuban False Chameleon.
Anyone want to put in their 2 cents?

La Theloderma corticale, más conocida como "rana de musgo", es una especie que habita en el norte de Vietnam. El parecido de su piel con esta planta le confiere un excelente camuflaje gracias al cual es difícilmente detectada tanto por sus depredadores como por sus presas.
