The Puckish Scoundrel is here, and ready to sell you all sorts of shady things! Of course, if anyone asks, all the proprietor sells is potions, elixirs, poultices, and other various alchemical supplies. Absolutely -no- stolen goods here either, no sir. Why, that would be illegal and immoral and all that drivel.

Tips for Shopping for Asian Music in Japan!
If you're a J-Pop fan, you probably know better than anyone that it's difficult to get content quickly at an affordable price. J-Pop releases are usually much smaller than their K-pop counterparts, but the price and shipping from online CD stores doesn't really reflect that. So if you ever find yourself in Japan, there's no reason not to take advantage of the good deals surrounding you! However, there are a lot of different places to get music, and it can be overwhelming to sort through. For a little hand in getting the most for your yen, please check out some of my tips and tricks for getting J-Pop while you're in Japan!
CD Stores (New):
The two major CD  stores in Japan are Tower Records and HMV. Both charge standard retail price for CDs, and both have pretty great stock, so if you're looking for a CD, there's a good chance these stores will have it—particularly if you're shopping in metropolitan areas like Shinjuku or Shibuya. Some regional branches of these stores are much smaller and will focus on new releases or best-selling groups like Johnny's groups or AKB48.
Both Tower Records and HMV sell K-Pop and have a small selection of music from popular Western artists. You can also buy magazines, photobooks, and concert DVDs from these stores.
If you're buying a CD around the release week, it might be a good idea to research if the group is having an event at Tower Records or HMV. Depending on which location you shop at, you might be able to get an event ticket to attend and in-store live or a lottery ticket to go to a handshake event. Usually the music store website will list their upcoming events.
Groups might also have special promo items at certain music stores. For example, you can get the same HMV exclusive novelty items at HMV stores that you can get online—this includes items like postcards, clear files, or posters like Da-iCE's calendar posters.
Basic tips:
-In Japan, you can usually buy an album the day before the official release day—this is called “flying get.” If you're worried about event tickets or novelty item running out, be sure to flying get your CD! This can also help your group of choice get a high first day ranking on the Orion charts!
-Music stores are not arranged by the English alphabet, but instead by Japanese syllables. Since some Japanese group names are English, this can often be a little confusing, so before you started shopping, it migh be helpful to figure out how the syllable system works. For example, Da-iCE starts with the “da” sound, but is actually filed under the “ta” syllable.
-Some groups are organized by their agency, and not their group name. For example, Johnny's Entertainment groups have their own section in most CD stores. In other CD stores, LDH groups and Ebidan groups have their own section. If you can't find them with the other CDs, they might be in their own individual areas!
-HMV has a fantastic online used store where CDs can sell for great discounts! Of course, you can take advantage of this store overseas, but in Japan it comes along with free shipping that can have your goods delivered in one to two days! The condition of the CDs is quite good, but the downside is while some sellers will tell you if the CD comes with a photocard or bonus content, others won't. It's good to hunt around the site for a bit before committing to a purchase.
CD Stores (Used)
Book Off is actualy my personal favorite place to go CD shopping since you can get fantastic deals or expensive content. Prices can go as low as 108 yen, and on average you can get most CDs between 500 yen and 1,100 yen (basically $4-$10). What kind of CDs are in stock and the overall size of the store varies from location to location, but most stores offer a wide selection of J-pop, J-rock, Western music, K-pop, jazz, classical, anime music, and so on.
You can also buy used concert DVDs, photobooks, magazines, and box sets at Book Off in addition to other content like books, manga, anime, TV shows, movies, figurines, and so on.
Since Book Off is a used store, the organization isn't always perfect, so try keeping these tips in mind when you visit:
-Book Off's CDs are usually divided into regular discounts, 500 yen mark downs, and 280 yen mark downs. However, a lot of discounts are scattered in each section. For example, I've found 108 yen and 280 yen CDs in the regular section, and 280 yen CDs in 500 yen section. If you have the time, I would explore all sections to see what you can find.
-K-pop CDs are usually divided from J-pop CDs and stuck on the end of the Western music section of the stores. HOWEVER, a lot of employees don't know which groups are K-pop and which aren't, so you'll often be able to find K-pop artists (especially TVXQ, BoA, and Supernova) with the J-pop CDs.
-Oversized CDs often can't fit on the standard shelves, so if you're looking for bigger albums like K-pop CDs or boxsets, look around for the over sized CD sections.
-K-pop or J-pop CDs which come with photocards or bonus content may or may not be sold with it in Book Off. If the CD isn't in plastic wrap, you can check, but if it is wrapped up, be aware that it may not contain a photocard.
-One of the best times/places to buy used CDs is directly after a CD release at the Shibuya Book Off. For certain J-Pop groups or K-pop groups, fans will bulk buy the album in hopes of getting certain event tickets or photocards, then immediately go to Book Off Shibuya to resell their extra CDs. With the influx of CDs, the staff won't plastic wrap each CD, and will place them immediately onto the mark down shelf, which makes them easy to check to see if they do or don't have photocard content inside.
Disk Union is also a good resource. While you can find a pretty decent J-pop selection in this store, I'd actually recommend this store a little more for fans of rock, classical, jazz, soul, and of course Western music. There are some VERY rare items in the store for excellent prices, but most of them tend in the direction of vinyl records, box sets, or limited edition releases. If you're near the Shinjuku area, I'd definitely give the branch there a look to see what kind of goods you can find.
Merch
If you're an idol fan, there's no better place to go than Trio! Here is where you can find merch, a lot of which you can normally only access by attending concerts or being part of the fan club! Items include concert goods, lightsticks, photobooks, photocards and postcards, posters, uchiwas, bags, keychains, and so on.
The stores are generally divided by male and female idols. Johnny's groups dominate the male half of the store, and you can find goods from pretty much every era of those groups' promotions for a FANTASTIC price considering how rare some of the items are. There are also items from LDH and Ebidan groups and avex groups like Da-iCE and Solidemo. However, the merch availability for the newer groups is mostly limited at the moment. On the female half, you can find exclusive goods for 48-project groups and Hello! Project groups, with some other smaller groups being represented.
AAA also a pretty sizable representation at Trio, including some hard to find concert goods that are almost impossible to get overseas these days!
Trio also has a rock section, particularly in the Nakano Broadway location, so if you're a fan of VK or some of the biggest names of alt-rock, you can also find some of their concert merch, magazines, and posters.
The store Mandarake also has a section dedicated to idols, those once again Johnny's groups dominates the selections for male idols. The goods are similar to Trio, so if there's anything you couldn't find at Trio, this is an excellent place to hit up.
However, please be aware that a lot of goods are in glass cases and you will need the help of a shop assistant to purchase them. Before you go, try brushing up on your shopping Japanese so you're not just grunting and pointing to what you need.
K-Pop
Along with the standard CD stores, you can find more K-pop CDs in Tokyo's Koreatown district in Shin-Okubo. In this area, there are entire streets dedicated to K-pop where you find CDs, posters, merch, photobooks, lightsticks, fashion, DVDs, and other K-pop related content. A lot of it is unofficial merch, but if that doesn't bother you, it's a fantastic place to go shopping! Best of all, a lot of rookie groups can often be found in the area to promote themselves, and occasionally you can even take a picture with them!
Prices can vary from store to store, and some stores have signed CDs available. Since there is a gap in the prices, my strategy while shopping in Shin-Okubo is to do all my browsing first and then backtrack to make purchases after comparing prices.
Please also be aware that many of the stores don't accept credit cards—it's always good to have some cash on hand!

The Coffee Drinker’s Guide To Columbus, Ohio
Columbus is booming. This fact is hard to miss as you drive towards it—construction is everywhere and cranes dot the skyline as more and more companies move in to chase a growing talent pool. Much of that talent has graduated from Ohio State and chosen to stay in a city that offers a high standard of living without bigger cities’ corresponding costs.
A young, diverse workforce and an influx of investment bring the need for coffee companies to keep that momentum caffeinated. Luckily for residents and visitors alike, Columbus now boasts a flourishing coffee scene, featuring local stalwarts evolving with the times and young upstarts trying to save the world.
The city is not only home to a panoply of cafes and roasteries, it even has its own organized coffee tour, the Columbus Coffee Experience. Visit any four of the 18 locations, and you earn a free t-shirt; complete the set and you get a travel mug for your (probably by now over-caffeinated) troubles.
So after first stopping at the Columbus Convention Center to gaze in awe at the oddly lifelike visage of Arnold Schwarzenegger, here are six of the best coffee shops around Columbus to consider visiting.

  Fox in the Snow Cafe
Since its inception in 2014—as a reaction to the lack of pastry options in Columbus—Fox in the Snow has garnered not only regional but national acclaim for its inventive baked goods and coffee menu. Prospective customers line up out the door most weekends. Started by two Blue Bottle Coffee alums and serving coffee supplied exclusively by Tandem Coffee Roasters from Portland, Maine, Fox in the Snow now has three locations across Columbus.
The flagship bakery and cafe in Italian Village lies within a renovated garage, which benefits from large factory-like windows that flood the space with sunshine. Light wood furniture and a myriad of house plants help to further enhance the airy, woodland glade feel. Fox in the Snow maintains a no-Wi-Fi-no-outlet policy, which does away with laptop campers and lets the cafe’s relaxed atmosphere thrive unimpeded.
Impressively, the crew at Fox in the Snow’s Italian Village location handles the almost constant flow of customers using only a two-group La Marzocco Linea PB and a host of Hario V60 brewers. Pastries, which usually sell out rapidly, range from cinnamon rolls and sticky buns to brownies and galettes.
Fox in the Snow has multiple locations around Columbus. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
  One Line Coffee
Just one of a number of cafes running the length of the Short North neighborhood’s High Street, One Line opened in 2009 and has since expanded to a second location across from the Statehouse downtown. Founded by a father and son team, One Line began as a way to find out more about the supply chain behind the coffee they sold. With an emphasis on sourcing as well as brewing, One Line boasts a large selection of single-origin options roasted on a Loring Kestrel at their facility in nearby Heath, Ohio.
The original cafe in the Short North features exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, and an impressive array of bar seating along three sides. The focal point of the cafe is a circular bar in the center of the space, with a three-group La Marzocco Strada EP, Mazzer grinders, and a custom pour-over station to allow customers a full view of the coffee-making process, no matter their choice of brew. Public cuppings take place on the weekends as part of One Line’s commitment to transparency and education, and sourcing information adorns the walls to further inform those interested in learning more about specific coffees.
One Line Coffee has multiple locations in Columbus. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Mission Coffee Company
Tucked away just off High Street in the Short North, Mission Coffee Company gives the impression of a well-kept secret, a hideaway coffee spot that only the savvy locals know. Of course, such a thing is almost impossible in 2019, but Mission holds onto that feeling with an atmospheric cafe space featuring the requisite exposed brick walls and reclaimed wood accents. Industrial elements like a garage door and granite bar top are softened by the lighting and comfortable seating, especially the back corner which features a number of low-slung sofas surrounded by Mission merch.
Mission started roasting its own coffee in 2014 after starting out as a multi-roaster cafe, with a separate facility that also incorporates an education program located near Fox in the Snow in Italian Village. At their cafe, a La Marzocco Strada is assisted by Mahlkӧnig and Mazzer grinders, offering a range of classic espresso-based drinks, complemented by more experimental fare such as a seasonal cascara cider. Pour-overs, batch brew, cold brew on tap, and tea from Chicago-based Spirit Tea round out the drink menu, while pastries are provided by local bakery Mmelo.
Mission Coffee Company is located at 11 Price Ave, Columbus. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Stauf’s Coffee Roasters
When it comes to coffee in Columbus, Stauf’s is undoubtedly a trailblazer, having been in business for over 30 years. With seven locations spread across the city, Stauf’s has something for everyone—from the neighborhood hangout vibes of its original shop in Grandview Heights to the pared-back industrial minimalism of its cafe within the Idea Foundry maker’s space in Franklinton.
Stauf’s newest site, inside a renovated church close to Ohio State’s sprawling campus, feels very much made for the student population of Columbus. The vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows, and upcycled pews pay homage to its past, while its size and a plethora of two-top tables make it an ideal study location. Unlike most other Stauf’s locations, this one doesn’t boast its own shop roaster, although it more than makes up for it with the latest in coffee brewing tech, most notably a Slayer Steam LP three-group espresso machine and Marco SP9 automated pour-over brewer.
Stauf’s claims no fewer than five of the 18 stops on the Columbus Coffee Trail which, combined with the two newest locations, means that no matter where in the city you find yourself, you’re never far from a cup of Stauf’s coffee.
Stauf’s Coffee Roasters has multiple locations around Columbus. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Brioso Coffee
Another of Columbus’ specialty pioneers, Brioso Coffee was founded in 2001 by Stauf’s alum Jeff Davis. 18 years later, with a second cafe also housing the company’s roasting operation open a few blocks away (and the original location about to move across the street), Brioso is not sitting still. The cafe-roastery features exposed brick walls, wood floors, and a 15-kilo Giesen roaster that supplies both locations as well as an ever-evolving list of wholesale accounts across the region.
A brick wall separates the roasting and education side of the space from the bar area, which hosts a matte black Synesso Hydra and Mahlkönig PEAK grinders for espresso, Hario V60s for pour-overs as well as batch-brewed drip coffee and cold brew on tap. On the other side of the wall sits the roaster alongside space for cupping and education as well as seating for customers who would like to observe the roasting operation in full swing.
Brioso Coffee has multiple locations around Columbus. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
  The Roosevelt Coffeehouse
A newer entrant to the Columbus coffee scene, among non-profit Roosevelt Coffeehouse’s mottos is “Good coffee for good.” Catchy, and also a succinct summary of its mission: all profits go to various social causes around the world, from fighting hunger and human trafficking to providing access to clean water.
The Roosevelt, in partnership with its sister roasting company Roosevelt Coffee Roasters, aims to do all this by sourcing, roasting, and serving the best coffees possible to the people of Columbus. Having previously been a multi-roaster cafe, Roosevelt started roasting their own last year from their second location within The Gravity Project, a retail-office-living space across the river in Franklinton.
The original cafe, opposite Brioso on Long Street, is sprawling, high-ceilinged, and spacious, boasting enormous street-facing windows and a series of connected rooms and event spaces. The bar, along with all the tables, is made from recovered bowling alley lanes, and features a Modbar espresso machine and Hario V60 pour-over setup, supported by Mahlkönig EK43 and PEAK grinders. Roosevelt’s coffee menu is complemented by doughnuts, bagels, and cake pops, all supplied by local and like-minded businesses.
The Roosevelt Coffeehouse has multiple locations around Columbus. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

With an emphasis on sourcing as well as brewing, One Line boasts a large selection of single origin options roasted on a Loring Kestrel at their facility in nearby Heath, Ohio.
Of course such a thing is almost impossible in 2019, but Mission holds onto that feeling with an atmospheric cafe space featuring the requisite exposed brick walls and reclaimed wood accents.
Unlike most other Stauf’s locations this one doesn’t boast its own shop roaster, although it more than makes up for it with the latest in coffee brewing tech, most notably a Slayer Steam LP three-group espresso machine and Marco SP9 automated pour-over brewer.
A brick wall separates the roasting and education side of the space from the bar area, which hosts a matte black Synesso Hydra and Mahlkönig PEAK grinders for espresso, Hario V60s for pour-overs as well as batch brewed drip coffee and cold brew on tap. On the other side of the wall sits the roaster alongside space for cupping and education as well as seating for customers who would like to observe the roasting operation in full swing.
Brioso Coffeee has multiple locations around Columbus.

Interview // Jimothy Lacoste
I interviewed Jimothy for Issue 129 of Loud and Quiet. Photography by Sonny McCartney.
Read online.
At Burberry’s New Bond Street store, the stairs leading to the menswear department are lined with immaculate, heavy pile carpet in a fantastically impractical shade of cream. Sleek, Art Deco-style banisters guide the way to tastefully-lit chambers on the lower ground floor, its walls sparsely lined with clothing rails and covered in staff-sanctioned customer graffiti. Shop assistants glide around the space silently, smoothing shirts and straightening rows of signature trench coats, which currently retail at £1,495 apiece.
Jimothy Lacoste is stood examining the shoes. In his hands is a fawn-coloured loafer, decorated in Burberry’s trademark tartan, edged with navy blue, calf leather piping and embellished with a buffed gold chain. “Classic. The more simple, the better,” he nods approvingly, turning it over to inspect the sole. “£450. The perfect price.”
As we prepare to exit, Jimothy chooses a black marker pen from a selection on a ledge, crouches and carefully adds “Jimothy” to the lower regions of the wall in capital letters, the tail of the Y spiralling inwards like the shell of a cartoon snail.
As predicted on 2017’s breakout track ‘Getting Busy’, life has suddenly gotten quite exciting for Jimothy, real name Timothy Gonzales. Following a steady string of standalone tracks with enjoyably low-budget music videos, the Camden-raised rapper is now signed to Black Butter Records, the home of Rudimental, J Hus and Octavian.
His first release for the label was September’s single ‘Fashion’, the premise of which provides an amusingly literal framework for today’s interview. As he explains in the intro to the song in his leisurely drawl, “You know, I love to dress… Clothes is there – you might as well take advantage of it. It’s just fun, bro.” To ram the latter point home, props in the accompanying video include a real life zebra and a white Rolls Royce. Meanwhile, Jimothy lolls on a leather sofa in a cobalt fur jacket and crystal-covered Gucci shades, steals a bottle of champagne from a Sainsbury Local, and does his trademark hip wiggle in a succession of primary-coloured slacks.
It’s this vague whiff of the ludicrous that has made Jimothy a divisive figure. His deadpan delivery is less fire in the booth than easy-going Sprechgesang, the well-to-do North London accent and clear diction jarring with the use of street slang. Lyrics are literal and rhymes often ridiculous (“I’m gonna have to dip, I’ll see you soon / Baby, don’t get sad, when I’m rich I’ll take you to the moon”). So far, all the subjects covered have been simplistic, including his love of London transport (‘Subway System’), bilingualism (‘I Can Speak Spanish’) and plans for romance (‘Future Bae’).
Mirroring the minimal production of his iPad-pop, his homemade videos have an endearing DIY quality, and through them he’s established his own visual language. For example, by now we know to expect sporadic subtitles, rotating £20 note graphics, and Jimothy in smart-casual dress, showcasing his extremely gif-able dance moves in an array of urban locations, including on top of high rise buildings and bus stops. In a genre that prides gritty authenticity, Jimothy’s benign playfulness stands out, earmarking him as either endearingly naive or wilfully provocative. After our afternoon together, I decide he’s probably both.
Certainly, he seems to benefit from an enviable lack of self-consciousness. In the opulent Gucci store on Old Bond Street he breezily dismisses their trainers as “horrible”, within easy earshot of staff. In the walnut-panelled rooms of Ralph Lauren, Jimothy tells me that, unlike most people, he much prefers the Polo Bear motif to the iconic Polo player logo. “It’s cute,” he explains. “Shows you’re not insecure. Shows you don’t take life too seriously.”
Though still probably only in his late teens (his exact age is being withheld to preserve mystery), Jimothy is a seasoned aesthete, with a precisely defined personal style. He aspires to the preppy look preferred by “posh, old people”, boarding school kids and city workers, citing his staple pieces as cable knit sweaters, gilets, cords, pinstriped silk shirts and heritage labels. He’s not precious about seeming androgynous: the Gucci glasses from the ‘Fashion’ video were from the ladies department, and he intends to start wearing handbags as necklaces. He loves primary colours, happily philosophises on his favourite shade combinations (red with blue, and green with black) and proudly offers an itemised rundown of today’s outfit. It is as follows: navy and white Prada sneakers (£460), scarlet Ralph Lauren cords (£50 from eBay), white Oxford shirt from Uniqlo (£24.90), Gucci belt (£265), Prada shades and Coach messenger bag (gifted), cream fur jacket (on loan from his older sister), Slazenger socks (£2), and briefs from a Spanish supermarket (around €1 for 3 pairs).
Jimothy will happily concede to being materialistic, but he retains a sense of perspective about his expensive purchases: “I love brands. But if [something I buy] breaks the next day, I’ve got no right to be upset about it. No right. Because as soon as I buy something, it’s already money down the drain.” If he seems surprisingly sanguine at the idea of squandering cash, it’s a position he’s only had the luxury of indulging in recent months.
“The first time I actually went shopping by myself and bought something was literally six months ago,” he recalls later, reclined on a sofa in a quiet nook of Soho House. “That was Lacoste. Basically, I got money from merch, and that was the very first time I had any money ever in life, despite what people think. Lots of people think I’m a rich kid and I’m really not. My mum would only give me £10 maybe every three weeks and every time she did that she was so upset that I would just spend it on spray cans.
“It’s weird because I’ve never had money, but I’ve always dressed really smart. And that’s because my older sister worked in retail and she was really into fashion. She would be onto me, like, ‘Do you want me to get anything for you?’
“But I don’t shop in these shops regularly. I had guilt when I first went to the Gucci store the other day. I felt really weird. I felt a bit depressed, even. But I need to remind myself that I left this much money in my savings account, and I’ve left this much money to spend on food and clothes. And that I’m here because I am becoming a little successful in life.” He describes designer clothing as “a medal” in that “it reminds me that I’m doing well, and it motivates me more and more each day to carry on and chase my dreams.”
Aside from the influence of his sister, it was graffiti culture that first sparked Jimothy’s interest in fashion, when he was hanging out around Gospel Oak from the age of 11. “I was always just in a typical tracksuit with quick [Nike] Air Forces. I had no style,” he laughs. “Because that’s just how everyone dressed, and you’ve got to look the same and what not.
“There were these older graffiti writers in London that I looked up to. I thought they’d be dressed exactly like me but then I met some of them and they were all extremely classic and smart. They just dressed like they had money: slim trousers, tucked-in shirt. I looked at that and then I looked at my situation and I thought it would be so cool to do the same, first of all because I love this style, but second because dressing like a rich guy even though you’ve got no money is fun. Even though your mum’s been on the dole for over 25 years and your dad’s never worked a single day of his life. Because no-one in my family has money. But when I was dressed like a rich guy, I just felt amazing. I felt amazing. So ever since then I was just dressed really smart.
“And then later I watched this documentary on kids in New York in the ’70s. And they all dressed how I dress now: colourful trousers, [Adidas] Sambas or any slim trainers, tucked in shirt, sweater, a nice old-man-looking jacket, flat caps. I was like, ‘This is where he got it from. This whole time I’ve been dressing like these kids without knowing.’ And after that I really, really stuck with my style.”
We exit Burberry and head towards Prada on Old Bond Street, past a gaggle of wealthy teenagers and two immaculately coiffured ladies being helped into a car by their chauffeur. It’s an uncharacteristically mild October day, and businessmen are visibly flushed in their bespoke suits as they plough past us. A chrome Lamborghini cruises past, driven by a man in his 50s. While my default response is to roll my eyes, Jimothy is delighted. “He looked so happy,” he smiles, as it vanishes around the corner, “I love it!”
Jimothy’s parents split when he was barely one, and he, his sister and brother were raised by their mother. They lived in Primrose Hill, a notoriously well-heeled enclave of Camden, at the top of Regent’s Park. “The council gave us the flat in Primrose Hill thirty years ago, so it’s all a blessing,” he says, gauging my surprise. “See, this is the funny thing: the way I talk, the way I walk, the way I dress, where I live – people are convinced I’m rich. But I talk like this because I’ve been around lots of posh kids, and because it’s a better way of talking.
“And of course, my mum’s from Spain so she has class. So she’ll be poor but she’ll also be dressed like a rich woman, and the house will look well designed even though it’s a council house. A lot of people have money but they have no class. A lot of people have money but they don’t know how to dress. Do you know what I mean? Money doesn’t mean anything.”
He mixed with affluent kids at the local park from a young age, only to be separated when they went to private school. When they hit their teens, Jimothy invited himself along to their house parties, and his socialising then snowballed to the point where he was hanging out almost exclusively with rich people. “Literally, I don’t have a single friend in my situation, living in a council house,” he says, shaking his head. “It makes me sad sometimes. But if it wasn’t for those friends I wouldn’t be the person I am now.”
I wonder if Jimothy ever felt intimidated by his friends’ wealth. “Definitely,” he nods. “At first I was very insecure about it. But that was when I was 13 and dressed in a certain way, and all the other kids would be dressed really smart. They would make me feel really bad. The funny thing is, now I’m the one dressed really smart, and they’re dressed like they’re from a council house. They go to private school, and they’re trying to dress like a roadman, trying to dress like a hood kid.”
While there was once an element of Jimothy dressing to deliberately confound people’s preconceptions, he now feels conflicted about being mistaken for a rich kid. “The reason why it hurts my feelings so much – and no offence, because I love rich kids – is they all know how to play the piano. Their parents could afford to lend them a decent amount of money or a car for their music videos. They could start a career easier than someone with not much money. Me, I literally started with nothing. It was all me, me, me, me, me. So when people think [I’m a rich kid] it implies I didn’t work for anything; that it was given to me. And that really, really disrespects me, my family, everything.”
If Jimothy was initially a fish out of water in his friendship group, he felt even more out of place at the special school he attended from the age of 13, due to his dyslexia and dyscalculia. The way he tells it, he knew he didn’t belong there but stayed because the work was easy. Had he left, he might never have pursued music.
“At the special school there are no kids with insecurities,” he explains. “So I wasn’t shy to write a song and put it out there. I wasn’t shy to make a music video. That school made me do music, basically. And the work was easy but that was freeing. That school gave me a free-thinking mentality and a higher consciousness.”
In some respects, he believes the school protected him. “It did get to a point where it was then scary to go to a mainstream school. Because I thought to myself, actually, if I go to a mainstream school and someone laughs at me for dyslexia, or for my parents having always been living off benefits, or for not having a father figure, I don’t know how I would react to that. [I don’t know] whether I would fight them, whether I would then not go to school and end up on the streets selling drugs. If I went to a mainstream school – and it sounds really harsh and kind of depressing, but it’s true – but if I went to a mainstream school I’d either be dead or I’d be prison. And that’s why I always say with my songs that Jimothy is blessed.”
The floors of the Gucci store are covered in geometric patterns, in tiles of purple, red, grey and white. There are mirrored walls and staircases lined with plush velvet in a vivid shade of oxblood. In the womenswear section, we’re admiring the craftsmanship of a collection of luxe satin bombers in jewel colours, each intricately embroidered and painstakingly stitched with sequins. Jimothy’s eyes are drawn away from the glitz to a monochrome coat in the iconic interlinking GG pattern. “I’d buy that for my future bae,” he nods.
There wasn’t money for piano lessons growing up, but Jimothy believes he inherited a “gene of rhythm” from his dad, and a fascination with melody from his mum, who was always playing R&B at home. Grime was a formative influence, as was UK garage, which he was exposed to via the older graffiti writers. “I’d listen to anything,” he remembers. “If it sounded good in my ears, I’d put it on, whether that was Somali pop or classic house.”
Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, Octavian and Sheck Wes are all mentioned when I ask Jimothy about who he sees as his peers. “Basically, it’s music that you can dance to but music you can sit down in your room to by yourself,” he explains. “Tomorrow, I could come out with a house tune, I could come out with a rock tune, I could come out with a bedroom pop tune. Nothing is ever intended. You’ve got to come to [my music] with no expectations.
“A lot of people think I don’t take music seriously,” he continues, “and that’s super disrespectful. I will not put out anything I don’t like. So many producers send me so many instrumentals, and I am super particular. It offends me when people come up to me like, ‘Oh mate, I love your stuff – it’s funny.’ I wanna hear, ‘I love your stuff, I love your instrumentals, I love your lyrics.’”
And yet, I counter, surely he must concede that there’s a vein of humour running through his work? “Oh yeah, definitely,” he smiles. “And I love to shock people. I’ve always been a bit of an attention-seeker. But I think it depends. If people only find it funny and they don’t appreciate anything else about it, it offends me. Like, I find my own stuff funny, but when I’m doing the instrumental, I have so much passion and love.”
Considering the rigour he applies to every other area of his life, I don’t doubt Jimothy’s discipline in the studio. Today he’s fasting, which he does two consecutive days a week, the rationale for which is apparently to “repair DNA”. “When your digestion isn’t going your body then focuses on cell replenishment,” he elaborates. Then there’s the cold showers he takes every morning, and the nights spent sleeping on a hard floor.
I wonder at the rationale behind his asceticism. What tangible benefits does he actually take away from such restrictive rituals? “The main benefit I see from it is mental strength. So when someone says to me, ‘Can you do this?’ it’s easy for me to do it because my brain is so strong. You know, I’ve had no father figure whatsoever. I’ve never had someone to say, ‘Good job. Focus on your goals.’ I had to find that in myself.”
En route to Soho House for our sit-down chat, there’s a pretty uncanny coincidence. We’re discussing fame and the loss of anonymity. “I’d love paparazzi following me,” Jimothy insists. “I’d love it.” Suddenly, a young man steps into Jimothy’s path. “Can I just interrupt, man?” he asks, clearly attempting to play it cool. “I think your shit’s dope.” They take a selfie together, the fan departs and we continue our journey, Jimothy wearing a contented grin.
As our conversation draws to a close, the subject turns to aspiration. For Jimothy, is success ultimately measured in luxury clothing, or is there something loftier he’s aiming for? “A good income,” he replies without any hesitation, “to the point where I’ve got my own house and I can treat myself, and I can have kids and I can have a wife.” So in essence, he’s seeking security? “Definitely. It’s something I’ve never had. It would just be amazing to have it. Something that seems a little bit impossible.”
What else? “Having a fan base that loves me and I love them. I love being a role model. I want all my fans to be happy to express themselves and to have fun at my shows and to just go crazy. To let their emotions out and to let go of stress, and to not be insecure and not be those kids that judge other people. I want my fans to just be nice people. Like me. Don’t judge people, don’t call other people names, treat everyone with equality. Simple things really.”
While it’s heartening to hear the connection Jimothy feels to his fans, I wonder if his increasingly lavish lifestyle might eventually create resentment. “It should be the opposite,” he insists. “They should look at me and think. ‘1. I’m happy for Jimothy – he’s doing well. And 2. that’s motivation for me.’
“When I now see someone with a sports car it makes me happy, like, that could be me one day. That motivates me. I’m not gonna hate on them; that’s how unsuccessful people think. You’ve got to be happy for that person and aspire to those levels.” The way Jimothy reacted to the owner of the Lamborghini earlier, I ask? “Yeah exactly. Stuff like that makes me happy. You’ve got to use it as motivation. You can be like that one day if you just follow your dreams and you’re smart.”

Huge Cocktail Village and Over 80 of the Capital’s Favourite Cocktail Bars Announced for Edinburgh Cocktail Week 2018
Edinburgh Cocktail Week have announced their plans for this year’s event, Monday 15th – Sunday 21st October, which include a huge 750 square meter ‘Cocktail Village’ at Festival Square on Lothian Road, a 'Secret Spirits Study' masterclass hub & bar on Queens Street, over 80 of the city’s favourite cocktail bars, and a week-long program of events & parties across the capital.
The growth of the festival from 3 to 7 days follows the popularity of last year’s inaugural Edinburgh Cocktail Weekend.
"We are thrilled to reveal our plans for this year’s Edinburgh Cocktail Week. Last year proved that Edinburgh is the biggest cocktail capital outside of London and showed us the need to expand the event to a week-long celebration. Based on feedback and our ambition to further grow the event we have introduced new elements such as Edinburgh’s first Cocktail Village, a masterclass hub on Queens Street, and increased the number of bars taking part to over 80 to help spread footfall. Edinburgh has some of the best bars and mixologists in the world and Edinburgh Cocktail Week is about showcasing and supporting the city's thriving cocktail scene. We can’t wait for October to arrive and look forward to welcoming cocktail-lovers to Scotland’s biggest cocktail festival."  -- Organiser - Gary Anderson
Just like last year, all signature cocktails featured during the event are available to wristbands-holders for £4 each, with wristbands priced at £6 for a weekday band (valid Monday to Friday) and £8 for a weekend band (valid Saturday and Sunday).
The Cocktail Village is free to enter for wristband-holders and will be the epicentre of this year’s festival, where festivalgoers will collect their wristbands and free copy of the ECW Guide before enjoying £4 signature cocktails from 15 bespoke pop-up bars such as Edinburgh Gin, Belvedere Vodka, Jameson Whiskey, Ableforth’s Gin, Altos Tequila, Smokehead Whisky, Rock Rose Gin and many more. Giant trees, picnic tables, live music and DJs, grass flooring and potted plants, festoon lighting, heaters and a clear roof skylight will create an outdoor festival atmosphere for festivalgoers to hangout with friends and socialise with fellow cocktail enthusiasts in before setting off on their cocktail adventure around the city. The Cocktail Village is delivered in partnership with Purvis Marquee Hire Scotland.
The number of cocktail bars taking part in the event is also increasing from 50 to over 80 including Harvey Nichols, Baba, The Voyage of Buck (recent winner of Scotland’s Most Stylish Cocktail Bar), Black Ivy, The Permit Room at Dishoom, Tigerlily, Finn & Bear, The Printing Press, Miss Woo's, The Refinery and Tonic, stretching further across the city as far as Dakota Hotel in South Queensferry. This expansion follows organisers’ plans to create clusters of bars in more residential areas – Leith, Stockbridge, Broughton and Bruntsfield – spreading footfall and allowing wristband-holders to experience Edinburgh Cocktail Week without having to travel into the city centre.
Another exciting addition to this year’s event is 'The Secret Spirits Study' pop-up on Queens Street, hosted by Wemyss Malts and Darnley’s Gin. The exact location is being kept a closely guarded secret just now, but wristband-holders can look forward to a program of cocktail making, gin and whisky masterclasses during the day where they will sample and learn how to create classic cocktails or their own gin or blended whisky before getting hands-on to shake-up their own creation to bottle and take home. Masterclasses are one hour long and attendees are invited to stay afterwards to enjoy £4 signature cocktails from the bar. In the evening the venue will become an underground cocktail bar with a program of bar takeovers from top bartenders from across Scotland, who will showcase their skills and create a menu of signature cocktails for wristband-holders to enjoy in the lounge or underground arched bothy. BOSTON — Have you heard about Night Shift Brewing’s forthcoming expansion to Boston proper? In case you missed it, here are some pertinent details. Long story short, it’s going to be awesome. And there’ll be food and coffee, along with beers exclusive to that location.
FRAMINGHAM — The seemingly ever-growing Jack’s Abby is getting an award for, well, growing. The U.S. Small Business Association has named the brewery the Massachusetts Manufacturer of the Year, citing its production growth from 18,000 to 43,000 barrels from 2015 to 2017, as well as the addition of over 100 local employees during that time period. Jack’s Abby also added a second brand, Springdale Beer, last year, with a taproom next door, and Springdale began distribution this year. The SBA will give co-owners and brothers Jack, Eric, and Sam Hendler their award at a ceremony in Needham tomorrow.
PEABODY — The North Shore beer scene continues to grow. With Granite Coast Brewing Co. on deck for a late August opening in Peabody, another three breweries are also potentially in the works there — Essex County Brewery and two others that have not yet been formally announced.
SOMERVILLE — As of yesterday, Somerville Brewing Company, aka Slumbrew, has temporarily revived its Assembly Row beer garden that closed in fall 2017 (301 Canal St.). As noted below, it got a reprieve for another summer because the construction set to overtake its site has been delayed. The brewery also has an indoor facility at Assembly Row, American Fresh Brewhouseat 490 Foley St., not to mention its original brewery and taproom at 15 Ward St. outside of Somerville’s Union Square. The newly reopened Assembly beer garden is dog-friendly, up to three or sometimes five dogs at a time, depending on chillness.

Aeronaut Brewing Company/Facebook
Aeronaut’s Allston pop-up will return for a third summer
ALLSTON, BOSTON — Aeronaut will once again host a pop-up beer garden in Allston this summer at Zone 3 on Western Avenue. Expect live music, plenty of beer, and a family-friendly, dog-friendly vibe every Wednesday and Friday evening from June through September. (The Somerville brewery is also reportedly considering a bike-friendly summer pop-up elsewhere in the Boston area this summer; stay tuned.)
BEER STORES EVERYWHERE — For the Boston Globe Magazine, Devra First writes “an open letter to men who sell beer, from a woman who drinks it,” asking those who sell beer to realize that a customer’s gender doesn’t indicate anything definitive about that customer’s beer knowledge, likes, or dislikes. In other words, don’t assume that women shopping for beer only want fruit beer or cider recommendations.
CAMBRIDGEPORT, CAMBRIDGE — Starting May 6, the Central Flea market will be back up and running on Sundays, this time at University Park near Massachusetts Avenue. Cambridge’s Lamplighter Brewing Co. will run an eight-tap beer garden there (and there will also be food trucks around) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each week, weather permitting. Aside from a variety of Lamplighter styles, the brewery also wants to serve a local cider. The space will fit about 100 people, and there will be some long tables and benches, standing tables, and plenty of open grassy space.
DOWNTOWN BOSTON — More outdoor drinking? More outdoor drinking. The next installment of seasonal outdoor extravaganza Boston Seasons, this one dubbed the Patios and running through spring and summer, will debut at City Hall Plaza on May 4, featuring a Wachusett Brewing Company beer garden (as well as Cambridge’s Honeycomb Creamery, serving ice cream). The beer garden will be pouring pints (of Wachusett as well as some guest brewers) starting at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends. Keep an eye out for pop-ups and activities throughout the season, including puppy visits, Boston Public Market picnic events, mini golf, and more.
Also downtown, the aforementioned planned “Dewey Square Drinkery” pop-up bar proposed by the Greenway Conservancy now has a vendor attached: Downeast Cider, as Boston Magazine reports. Pending permitting, the Downeast Back Porch on the Greenway, as it’ll be called, will be steps from South Station, serving five ciders on draft, including a new mint lemonade flavor that’ll be exclusive to this pop-up. Also on the menu: wines from Half Bottle Cans and a rotating local beer. The Back Porch will be open from late May through October on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, as well as on the weekends. As usual, there will be food trucks in the area. Expect lawn games, live music, and other attractions.
Also also downtown, and also by the Greenway Conservancy, the seasonal beer garden near Rowes Wharf will probably come back again this summer — stay tuned for an announcement soon — and signs point to Trillium reprising its role there.
ROXBURY — The opening of the Backlash Beer brewery and taproom in Roxbury is so close; it could debut in mid-May. The brewery will go into its final inspections in the coming weeks.

Part of Underground at Ink Block, which could soon be home to a Castle Island Brewing seasonal beer garden
ALLSTON, BOSTON AND BEVERLY — Heading to a Boston Cannons lacrosse game at Harvard Stadium or Endicott College this season? The team will be running a craft beer garden for the home games at both stadiums this year, featuring Bent Water Brewing Company, True North Ales, Jack’s Abby, and Castle Island Brewing Company, with Bent Water and Castle Island also brewing exclusive Cannons-themed beers for the occasion.
CINCINNATI — With Boston Beer Company busy breaking in its relatively new taproom at its Jamaica Plain facility and planning to expand to Downtown Boston, it’s also busy out of state: It’ll open a 9,000-square-foot taproom across the street from its existing Cincinnati, Ohio brewing space, which it has owned since 1997.
EVERYWHERE — Salem’sNotch Brewing has teamed up with the Trustees, the non-profit conservation group that oversees more than 46,000 acres of Massachusetts land (over 25,000 of those acres are publicly accessible) — from parks and gardens to hiking trails and lighthouses. This partnership will allow Notch to pop up at a variety of Trustees sites with a mobile beer garden. Most events will be free, and many will include live music and other family-friendly activities to be enjoyed while the adults drink Notch’s low-ABV ales and lagers. Keep an eye on the event calendar here.
IPSWICH — Haven’t yet made it to the new tasting room at Privateer Rum (11 Brady Dr.)? Northshore Magazine features a nice peek inside the attractive space; take a look, and then go taste rum at the boat-shaped bar.
SOUTH END, BOSTON — Castle Island Brewing, which has a taproom in Norwood, plans to open a seasonal beer garden in Boston’s South End at Underground at Ink Block (90 Traveler St.), pending city approval. The art-covered park debuted last year under I-93, and Castle Island Brewing’s 5,000-square-foot beer garden (“Castle Island at Underground”), if approved, will open there on May 11 and last through mid-October, operating from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. There will be about eight different beer styles available each day, as well as a couple wines. Thanks to some new equipment in Norwood, Castle Island has been able to increase production and play around with some new small-batch experiments, which will make appearances Underground. The spacious beer garden will fit around 400 people, and there will be lawn games and probably food trucks and other vendors onsite. The beer garden is slated to appear seasonally for at least five years.

Down the Road Beer Co./Facebook
Down the Road Beer Co.’s Goopmassta Session IPA, which the state wouldn’t allow to be infused with CBD
ASHLAND — Medfield-based, athlete-founded Zelus Beer Company — which produces “hydration-friendly” beers that are “crafted for your active lifestyle,” with low alcohol content — will open a pop-up taproom and beer garden at the Corner Spot in Ashland (6 Cherry St.) from April 13 to April 26, offering tasters, pints, and merch. There will also be a food truck onsite, as well as music and other events. Keep an eye on the Zelus website for scheduling information and updates.
EVERETT — With retail cannabis sales set to begin on July 1, one local brewery was hoping to be the first in the state to infuse beer with CBD, an active compound in cannabis that is thought to have some potential medical benefits without the psychoactive effects caused by another well-known cannabis compound, THC. Down the Road Beer Co. (199 Ashland St.) hoped to add CBD to its newly released Goopmassta Session IPA, but the state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission said no: “Infusing or otherwise adding cannabinoid extract in alcoholic beverages is considered adulteration of alcohol,” which is a no-no. (Industrial hemp, however, is allowed in the manufacture of alcohol in Massachusetts under certain conditions.) Want to try CBD-infused beer? Head to Vermont and seek out Long Trail Brewing’s Medicator. In Oregon, Coalition Brewing is also making a CBD-infused beer, Two Flowers IPA.
HARVARD — Carlson Orchards (115 Oak Hill Rd.), which has been producing non-alcoholic apple cider for decades, is getting into the hard cider game, the company announced this week, thanks in part to some consultation with the Stormalong Cider team — neighbors at New England Apple Products in Leominster, where Carlson Orchards’ non-alcoholic cider is produced. “We wanted to produce a hard cider that was similar to our premium farmstand cider and ultimately decided to make an ‘unfiltered’ hard cider for increased apple taste and character,” said Carlson Orchards president Frank Carlson, via press release. The first off-site release will be 16-ounce cans of Oak Hill Blend, distributed around the state via the Massachusetts Beverage Alliance, available starting April 1. Stay tuned for a potential fall 2018 opening of a tasting room onsite at Carlson Orchards.
MASHPEE — Today, March 29, is opening day for Cape Cod’s Naukabout Brewery & Taproom (13 Lake Ave.), a seven-barrel brewhouse with lake and river views. It’s open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Friday and Saturday (closed on Sunday). The opening lineup of beers includes Quittin’ Time, a “juicy” and “tropical” New England IPA; the triple dry-hopped Tides double IPA; a 3.5%-er, Stormborn Stout; and more.
SOUTH DEERFIELD — Berkshire Brewing Company (12 Railroad St.), which has been around since 1994, could soon open an 850-square-foot taproom that’ll operate a few days a week, with 20 taps, pretzels from Baked in Shelburne Falls, and food trucks outside on summer weekends. (Customers will also be able to bring in their own food.) There will be room for about 55 people inside. Why now? A recent amendment to a state law is now making it possible for the brewery — which has a pub-brewer wholesale license — to move from only offering free samples during tours to actually selling poured beer (but not packaged beer) onsite.
SOUTH END, BOSTON — Heading to the SoWa Open Market to shop and eat? It takes place on Sundays from May 6 to October 28, from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and starting at 11 a.m. each week, you can drink some beer, too. The Power Station (540 Harrison Ave.) will become the Beer Barn, courtesy of Craft Collective, serving up a rotating selection of beers and ciders. There’ll also be lawn games, live music, and more.
March 22, 2018
Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company/Facebook
Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company
FALL RIVER — Canned Heat Craft Beer Company (52 Ferry St.) could open as soon as early May; the team plans to can (of course) and distribute the beer, and there will also be tasting hours at the space, which will include cold food and a patio. Canned Heat has been previewing some potential beers on Facebook, including Limesicle, a milkshake IPA made with lime peel and vanilla bean; Aloha Brown, an English-style brown that will be aged on toasted coconut; and a Portuguese-inspired pilsner.
HAMPTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE — Smuttynose Brewing Company (105 Towle Farm Rd.) has been sold for an undisclosed amount to Runnymede Investments, a venture capital and investment firm based in North Hampton, New Hampshire, that intends to help the brand “not only survive, but…thrive.” Former Boston Beer Company executive Rich Lindsay, who was briefly CFO for Night Shift Brewing, will be CEO.
MARLBOROUGH — Walden Woods Brewing(277 Main St.) is so, so close to opening. It was supposed to happen this past weekend, but there were some delays. Look for it within the next few weeks.
ROSLINDALE — Alas, the season is about to end for Trillium’s temporary beer hall at the Roslindale Substation (4228 Washington St.). This Sunday will be the final day; check out some details for the last few events here.
SPRINGFIELD — In a Mass. Brew Bros. blind, bracket-style tasting of 20 Massachusetts New England IPAs, the victor was a nanobrewery in planning, Rustic Brewing Company, with a brew called Hop Blind. Lots of more established breweries were included, such as Trillium, Idle Hands, Tree House, and Lord Hobo. Western Mass. apparently has a lot to look forward to when Rustic opens, focusing on New England IPAs and milkshake IPAs.
WALTHAM — Contract brand Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. will get its own permanent home later this year, likely around fall — a 23,000-square-foot brewery and taproom right by Beaver Brook Reservation (411 Waverley Oaks Rd.). The large space will include a second taproom for overflow and private events, two patios, and a 30-barrel system, as well as an additional five-barrel pilot system for experimentation. The brand launched a few years back with the aim of producing protein-packed post-workout beers, but these days, Mighty Squirrel has moved away from those recipes, instead producing beers such as the hazy Cloud Candy IPA, Mocha Stout milk stout, and Kiwi White Belgian white ale.
WORCESTER — Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company(55 Millbrook St.), which focuses on imperial ales and lagers between 8% and 14% ABV (hence the name), has debuted its 100-person taproom; here’s the schedule for the first couple of weeks. Greater Good’s kitchen, dubbed Toast (stylized “TOAST.”), is serving up five types of grilled cheese, plus soft pretzels, hot dogs, and other snacks.

Trillium/Facebook
Trillium’s original Fort Point location
DOWNTOWN BOSTON — At the Royale over the weekend, a number of local bartenders took part in the annual Speed Rack competition, a speed bartending competition by and for women that raises money for breast cancer charities (and visibility for women in the bartending industry). This year, Tainah Soares (of A4cade in Cambridge) was crowned Miss Speed Rack New England, and she’ll go on to compete at the national finals in May, taking place in Chicago.
DOWNTOWN CROSSING, BOSTON — Democracy Brewing(35 Temple St.) — one of several exciting Boston-area brewery openings potentially slated for spring 2018 — is three months into construction and shared some renderings of what it’ll look like when it’s complete. Democracy Brewing is located in the longtime Windsor Button space.
FORT POINT, BOSTON — Trillium Brewing Company’s forthcoming Fort Point location at 47 Farnsworth St. — a move from its original spot in the neighborhood (369 Congress St.) that will result in a much larger and more awesome space — is moving along. BLDUP has a March construction update on the 16,000-square-foot project, noting that a permit has been submitted for restaurant occupancy. The two-story space, which could open by the end of the year, will include a brewpub with a full kitchen and microbrewery, bar on each floor, a room for private events, a retail shop, and two outdoor patios — one of which will be on the roof.
ROSLINDALE, BOSTON — Distraction Brewing Company (2 Belgrade Ave.) has now secured its Massachusetts farmer-brewery license, which lets it produce beer. Still in the works: a pouring license, zoning, and building the taproom.
WEYMOUTH — In addition to Barrel House Z (95 Woodrock Rd.), which opened a year and a half ago, and the forthcoming Article Fifteen (835 Washington St.) (see February 8 update below), Weymouth has even more beer on the way. Vitamin Sea Brewing has signed a lease near Barrel House Z and could open a 10-barrel brewery and taproom by the end of 2018, featuring a patio and rotating food trucks.

Greater Good/Facebook
Growlers at Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company, opening soon in Worcester
BOSTON — Prepare for beer gardens. Once the season arrives, Trillium’s popular Greenway garden will likely make a comeback this year, as the Herald reports, and that’s not all: The Greenway Conservancy is trying to find a brewery for “Dewey Square Drinkery,” a pop-up bar that would be open at least a couple days a week in Dewey Square. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, catch Trillium’s other seasonal beer garden — an indoor one — at the Roslindale Substation (4228 Washington St.)
CAMBRIDGE TO MEXICO CITY — Moe Isaza, bar manager atPammy’s(928 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge), is currently competing for his third time in the annual Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition, and he’s already made it quite far — he’ll be one of just two United States finalists competing globally in Mexico City against about 30 international bartenders on April 25. The US finalists were pulled from a field of 720 recipes submissions, narrowed down through several stages of judging and competition. Isaza’s drink is called the Poderoso and includes Bacardi Ocho, coffee liqueur (paying homage to Colombia, where Isaza was born before coming to East Boston as a four-year-old), pineapple juice, amaro, and a muddled lemon wedge.
EVERETT TO PAWTUCKET AND BEYOND — Night Shift Brewing (87 Santilli Hwy., Everett) is outgrowing its home and is now doing some contract brewing out of the Isle Brewers Guild cooperative in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, adding about 10,000 barrels a year to Night Shift’s output. And it’s the Everett brewery’s first foray into Rhode Island; it doesn’t yet distribute there, but its beers made at Isle Brewers Guild will be on tap and in cans at the Guild taproom.
In other Night Shift news, Braintree’s Widowmaker Brewing(220 Wood Rd.) has signed on with Night Shift Distributing (Night Shift Brewing’s sibling distribution arm) to take things to the next level (previously self-distributing to around 30 nearby accounts), hoping to spread around the whole Greater Boston area, not just the South Shore. Keep an eye out for Widowmaker’s Ecstasy of Gold American IPA and 50 Year Storm Double IPA around town, likely followed soon by the Donut Shop Stout.
And in other Night Shift news, Night Shift Distributing recently brought its first gluten-free brewery into its portfolio, Ghostfish Brewing out of Seattle. Four-packs began to hit Massachusetts shelves a couple weeks ago; look for Ghostfish’s Grapefruit IPA, Meteor Shower Blonde Ale, and Shrouded Summit Belgian White Ale.
IPSWICH — Privateer Rum (11 Brady Dr.) announced today that Maggie Campbell — head distiller since 2012, vice president since 2015 — has risen through the ranks again. She’s now president of the company, working alongside founder and CEO Andrew Cabot to further grow the seven-year-old brand, including doubling Privateer’s production capacity this year. (Privateer also recently debuted a new tasting room at the distillery.) Campbell is a familiar and distinguished face in the distilling world (and wine world, too), appearing on a number of boards and committees, as well as winning plenty of awards and recognition for her work at Privateer.
MALDEN — In case you missed yesterday’s news, Malden is getting lots more beer.
WORCESTER — Here’s a sneak peek inside Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company(55 Millbrook St.), set to open later this month with a focus on hefty imperial brews. The 100-person taproom will also have live music, games, and some food, such as panini and pretzels.

American Fresh/Facebook
American Fresh Assembly Row patio
SOMERVILLE — Somerville Brewing Company, aka Slumbrew, will be temporarily bringing back its outdoor beer garden at Assembly Row. “We’ll be back this summer with outdoor drinking and dining right at Assembly Row,” said cofounder Caitlin Jewell in a Facebook live video today. “We have bands and bocce and fun.” The beer garden, which was open in warmer seasons and covered up by a tent in colder seasons, was around for nearly three years before shutting down in fall 2017. A couple months later, Somerville Brewing Company opened up a full-service restaurant and bar, American Fresh Brewhouse, just down the block at 490 Foley St. in Assembly Row. Plus, there’s also the original Somerville Brewing location, a brewery and taproom in Somerville’s Boynton Yards neighborhood, right by Union Square (15 Ward St.)
In a Facebook thread, Jewell mentioned that this time around the beer garden will have “no tent, just fresh air.” She also noted that the “current plan” is that it’s just coming back for this upcoming warm season; the land is still slated to be built upon — part of Assembly Row’s seemingly never-ending development — but plans got delayed by a year.
Another beer update elsewhere in Somerville: On March 3, Winter Hill Brewing Co.(328 Broadway, Winter Hill, Somerville)will introduce its new milk stout, Large Iced Regular. The name — and the winter release date — is an homage to New Englanders’ year-round iced coffee obsession, and the stout is infused with Counter Culture Hologram coffee. In honor of the release, the brewery will be serving a special Union Square Donuts doughnut on March 3, while supplies last; the doughnut glaze is made using the beer.

Pretty Things [official photo]
Pretty Things’ Fluffy White Rabbits
BOSTON — Boston Beer Co., which is behind Samuel Adams beer as well as Angry Orchard hard cider, Twisted Tea, and other alcoholic beverages, has a new president: Dave Burwick, who will leave his position of CEO of Peet’s Coffee for the job. He’s also been a member of Boston Beer Co.’s board of directors for over a decade. Burwick succeeds longtime president and CEO Martin Roper. Meanwhile, Boston Beer Co. founder and chairman Jim Koch will continue to hold those positions.
EVERYWHERE — In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, female brewers nationwide — including plenty in Massachusetts — will be brewing beers made with a special Pink Boots blend of hops, named for the Pink Boots organization, which supports women in beer-related careers. (Sales of the hops go to the organization.) Keep an eye out for all the Pink Boots beers appearing at breweries around town later this year.
THE UK — At last, the news that Pretty Things’ rabid Boston fanbase has been waiting for! Well, not exactly. Pretty Things founders Dann and Martha Holley-Paquette have a new brewery project in the works, but it’s all the way overseas in Sheffield, England. The popular Somerville-based Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project ended in late 2015 after a seven-year run; the website, which is still live, describes it as “now an ex-project.”
“We always intended to end it on our terms, and we are happy to have done so,” the duo wrote on their website. “That’s why it was a project!”
The new project will be a microbrewery on the site of the Old Dairy, which, as its name suggests, was once a milk and cheese processing plant. The Holley-Paquettes will reportedly “produce craft beer in bottles and kegs for sale to wholesale customers.”
February 8, 2018
Trillium Brewing Company [official photo]
BOSTON / CANTON — No, a Trillium Brewing Company (369 Congress St., Boston; 110 Shawmut Rd., Canton)truck didn’t get “Storrowed” — that was just a fun bit of Photoshop in order to promote the brewery’s new release, a double IPA called Storrowed. The company describes it as having a “dank nose of sweaty pineapple, mangosteen, and stone fruit [and] intensely juicy flavors of overripe mango, pear flesh, notes of grapefruit pith, and a background hit of raw sugar.” For those who don’t understand the term “Storrowed,” just heed the road signs that prohibit trucks from driving on Storrow Drive. Don’t be that truck that gets stuck at the overpass. You will get stuck.
CAMBRIDGE — Lamplighter Brewing Company (284 Broadway) officially debuts its new back taproom today, February 9, doubling the brewery’s capacity and allowing it to host more private and public events. And it’s got a really great mural.
HAMPTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE — Smuttynose Brewing Company (105 Towle Farm Rd.), which has been a big name in New England’s craft beer world for more than two decades, is for sale. In a note shared by owners Peter Egelston and Joanne Francis on social media and the Smuttynose website, the duo writes: “At this time, in order for our company to continue on the path we embarked on back in 1994, Smuttynose needs someone who can provide financial resources that will move the company forward…We’re strongly committed to making sure this transition is as smooth as possible, and to help the company’s new owner or partner embark on a successful next chapter for Smuttynose and its wonderful staff. We want to emphasize Smuttynose Brewing company is open, brewing our fine beers daily and serving delicious food at Hayseed Restaurant. Many of you have asked how you can help…keep drinking Smuttynose brews and send your rich aunt or uncle our way!”
ROSLINDALE — Distraction Brewing Company (2 Belgrade Ave.) is a big step closer to opening; the brewery has secured its TTB license, meaning that the federal government recognizes it as a brewery. “In other words, we’re one step closer to transforming this raw, beautiful space into a place where our fellow Rozzidents can kick back and enjoy our beer,” the brewery wrote on Facebook late last month. “Still plenty of work to do. But we can’t wait to get our hands dirty.”
WEYMOUTH — There’s a Kickstarter campaign underway to help fund the building of an “epic taproom” for Article Fifteen Brewing (835 Washington St.), a “veteran-owned nano-brewery” that is currently in the buildout phase. The campaign ends in 10 days, and there’s about $4000 left to raise by then. The team has a lease, brewing equipment, and funds to help with the buildout but is seeking a little bit of help to get to the next step of the process. When Article Fifteen opens, it’ll serve beer “inspired by a love of hops and a proud tradition of military, fire, and medical service.”
WORCESTER — Founded in 2014, 3cross Brewing Company (4 Knowlton Ave.) made a change recently: It’s now 3cross Fermentation Cooperative. As the name suggests, it’s now a coop, owned by workers and customers (the first community-owned brewery in the state), and it’s expanding its focus beyond beer to other fermented products.

It's no secret that in order to appear professional, your personal internet site with your own.com address is essential. So what ingredients make for an excellent artist website precisely? You've got the music certainly, some images, videos, and also show days. Gathering content is an easy very first step. The part where lots of musicians get delayed is with the web site's layout. This makes good sense. Besides, as an imaginative number, it's alluring to desire something off the wall as well as various! The good news is, it's very easy to develop a website that's both easy as well as attractive; one that services mobile devices (which is significant nowadays) as well as has your personal special stamp. So where to start when you're creating your songs website? Let's take a look at several of the concepts of great songs web design that you could put on your own site. 1. Expert Images It's well worth the investment to obtain some expert images of on your own or your band. Obtain a range of shots - some farther away with great deals of room around the sides, some closer in like headshots. You'll require these to start your style off right. You will utilize these images many times: for your history, your header picture, your material location (think EPK web page for on-line media to get), and for social media. As the initial point that a prospective fan or reservation agent will see, a grainy image or one that's badly chopped will leave a negative impression of you very swiftly, and also might also avoid someone from continuouslying hear your music. 2. Tidy Layout Think about your site visitors. Yes, it's about your music, yet they're the ones getting an impression of you based on your web site's layout as well as web content. So make it easy for them to explore! To do that, choose a template that will certainly give you plenty of clear area for your web content. Then, focus on one point per page, as well as do it well. Your Homepage can be a website to the rest of your site (with a wonderful call-to-action as the emphasis), and afterwards each page that complies with should have to do with one topic, and also one subject only. Your bio web page is almost that - your bio. Your Photos web page need to showcase a selection of photos. Then your Songs page has lots of great songs as well as details concerning them. Keep it simple as well as this will aid your design feel structured. Keep in mind, people will certainly land on your page and scan it for simply a couple of secs. That's at all times you need to make a perception. Prevent way too much web content littering up your pages - a few well placed things will certainly go much further. One last point to keep in mind concerning a clean layout is the room that you don't utilize - called whitespace.
