Yesterday I kept being distracted from my book with this stunning set of windows in the lounge. It is definitely my favourite place in the hotel and those windows just frame lots of stunning Greek landscape pictures. #FodeleBeach #Fodele #Heraklion #Greece #Crete #FamilyTime #LittleBitOfSunshine #FamilyHoliday #Holiday #RestAndRelaxation #Jet2View #SFR #SFROnTour #FoodBlogger #Foodie @fodele_beach_hotel @jet2pics https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj7adjaIyG0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

FRESH START FOR HENDERSONS - Legendary Edinburgh vegetarian restaurant’s legacy lives on
Hendersons opened in Edinburgh 1962, Janet Henderson blazing a trail for the vegetarian and healthy-eating lifestyle long before Veganuary and other initiatives have pushed it into the main-stream of the culinary consciousness. This pioneering approach to dining earned Hendersons iconic status on Scotland’s food and drink scene. Almost six decades later, in the summer of 2020, when Hendersons ceased trading as a result of lockdown, there was understandable dismay amongst their long-standing customer base.
Barrie Henderson had been part of his family’s business for almost 20 years when it closed. Grandson of Janet, Barrie has been part of the Hendersons family business since he was 14, working his way through different departments including the old organic bakery, the kitchen and front of house, eventually becoming general manager at a time when the company was run by his uncle Nicholas and father Oliver. He is just as devoted to a vegetarian lifestyle, spending much of his time developing new recipes. He is also passionate about sustainable food production and growing his own food. His most treasured award is for a red cabbage that secured first prize at a local vegetable competition. Not content to see his grandmother’s legacy disappear, Barrie is beginning a new chapter with the opening of a new Hendersons near Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield Links in early September.
"Many people were in touch last year to tell me how sad they were to see the business close. We built up so much loyalty and trust from staff and customers over the years that I know will be tough to recreate, but I’m confident our brilliant community will come together and we’ll create a very welcoming environment for our friends old and new."  -- Barrie Henderson
Hendersons ethos has always been to deliver a great food experience for everyone, vegetarian or not. The focus will continue on producing nutritious dishes for all to enjoy. Opening 7 days a week, the new Hendersons will serve food and drinks throughout the day accommodating individuals and groups alike. Customers will be equally welcome to visit for coffee and cake, as they are for lunch and dinner. Barrie is also devising a tapas-style menu of dishes that will work alongside a drinks list of cocktails, wines and local beers.
"Whilst we only serve veggie and vegan food at Hendersons, we aim to create the most vibrant, creative dishes that will excite everyone. I’m working on some amazing new dishes right now, but we’ll also be incorporating the classics from the old menus. It’s all about balance and ensuring there’s something for everyone. I look forward to reconnecting with the customers and friends I’ve known for years. I look forward to the creative process of making dishes with our team, and listening to customer feedback. The buzz of hospitality is unbeatable, and it’s a privilege to connect with so many people. I want our customers to feel relaxed in our company, and leave feeling nourished."  -- Barrie Henderson
Work has begun to renovate the premises on Barclay Place (formerly The Apartment) with opening due in early September.

Acclaimed restaurants The Gannet and Erpingham House join Bonnie & Wild’s Scottish Marketplace
For us there is no more exciting Scottish building project just now than the St. James Quarter. The massive new development will introduce to Edinburgh a W Hotel, with its SushiSamba rooftop restaurant, an Everyman cinema and a host of bars & restaurants. But it is the Bonnie & Wild’s Scottish Marketplace that is really piquing our interest. and now with fewer than two months until its June 24 opening day, Bonnie & Wild has confirmed two acclaimed restaurants will be taking top spots at Edinburgh’s first Food Hall.
Glasgow institution The Gannet and vegan restaurant group Erpingham House will both be taking key food stalls at Bonnie & Wild’s Scottish Marketplace, which will house eight food stalls, three bars and four speciality retailers.
Housed within the St James Quarter, Bonnie & Wild has been attracting interest since the project was announced in 2019. Earlier this year it confirmed that BBC Masterchef Gary Maclean would be opening the seafood-focused Creel Caught, his first official venture, joining Edinburgh’s East Pizza and artisanal gelateria Joelato.
The Gannet, opened by Ivan Stein and Peter McKenna, is one of Glasgow’s best-loved restaurants, and is renowned for its take on Scottish fine dining, as well as its commitment to high quality seasonal ingredients sourced from artisan producers, foragers and farmers. Winner of multiple accolades, The Gannet won Scottish Licensed Trade News’ coveted Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year, and is holder of 3 AA Rosettes and a Michelin Plate.
Head chef Peter Mckenna said: “From the moment we heard about Bonnie & Wild’s Scottish Marketplace we knew it was a perfect fit for The Gannet. The venue is stunning. The finish, the concept, and the food and drink offering are all first class. I’m excited The Gannet is going to be one of the key food offerings within it.”
Upmarket vegan restaurant Erpingham House comes to Scotland for the first time after establishing itself in Norwich and expanding to Brighton. Alongside founder Loui Blake, Erpingham House also includes Russell Martin and Robert Snodgrass as key shareholders. Both Martin and Snodgrass were capped for Scotland during their football career.
Executive chef Meg Greenacre said: “We’d been looking to move to Scotland for some time, not least because both Russell and Robert have been desperate for us to open a Scottish Erpingham House! With Bonnie & Wild, we were presented with a superb opportunity to give our thoughtful cuisine a high profile platform in this incredible Food Hall space. I can’t wait for it to open!”
Ms Greenacre said guests to Bonnie & Wild could expect to see plant-based takes on old classics, such as their version of fish and chips, but she said they would be expanding the menu to take in locally available produce.
Bonnie & Wild’s General Manager Kate Russell added: “We’re all getting excited about opening, and showing off our fantastic Food Hall to an eager public. I think people will be blown away by the range of food options available to them.”
Ms Russell said that guests to Bonnie & Wild would be able to order food from any of the food stalls and have their order delivered to their table. She said: “It’s one of the key concepts for our Food Hall. So with a party of any size, each individual can order all together but off different menus. And as they wait they can peruse the retailers, including a butcher, fishmonger and craft bottle shop. Or they can explore the venue and see the wall space that’s been given over to stunning images of Scotland through a partnership with the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards, and which allows guests to order a print with proceeds going to charity.”

And we are back - with a message to our wonderful hospitality industry.
It’s been just over a year since we shuttered Scottish Food Review, couldn’t go to the pub and waited for everything to blow over.
But now, with the opening of our beloved hospitality industry, after a fashion anyway, it’s time to pull out the crayon’s once again and start writing some reviews again. We’ve kept the social media ticking over with various home creations and takeaways, but now we can go out into the big wide world and enjoy some restaurants again, it’ll be nice to be writing properly about them.
The big thing for us now is to be as supportive as we can for all the amazing businesses making a Covid comeback. When times were good we were very lucky, we got invited to lovely places, sampled wonderful food and got given fabulous drinks, but for now times aren’t good. Right now every penny counts, you may have half as many tables now, but all the bills still need paid, for many it’ll be a long and winding path back to profitability. So we believe it is not the time for us to be enjoying all the good stuff we once had, hopefully again in the future, but for now we feel not.
We will still happily accept any news you want us to publish, re-opening specials or fab ideas you have and wish us to publish, just send them in to [email protected]. So for now, if you want to invite us over to your place to write a review, put our words and pictures on the website, across TripAdvisor and Google then please feel free, but we will insist on paying full-price, for everything, and as usual leaving a tip. I hate to use the word ‘influencer’ but apparently we are just that, some folk do read our words, look at our photos and then chose to eat or drink at a place, so now is the time for us to give back, even if it is in a tiny way, by supporting the wonderful local businesses and above all the wonderful people that work in them.
Unless you are Mackie’s Crisps, then we will gladly accept all of the crisps, just like these…
