God I'm trying to ask for advice from a local personal finance forum and they just can not get past why I don't want to buy a house.
Because it isn't an option honey! You guys do the maths and tell me how exactly that's an option. They are trying to tell me it'll save money! The magical thinking is extreme
Like they are ignoring the question I'm actually asking and the answer to every one of their queries is
Because I'm working class
Because I'm a millenial
Because that isn't a freaking option man
They apparently want me to take on a unlimited number of jobs and tuck it all away in the hope that I'll somehow wave a hand and magic up a property
I have bills! The average house price here is 13x the median wage. I literally can't comprehend these people.
Why don't you work your arse off for a retirement you won't get to see because those jobs will kill you before you get there?
Literally all I'm asking for is the best way to make use of the savings that i almost killed myself building up and they are like ok but have you considered: ignoring your drs and the objective evidence that you were earning yourself a heart attack at 30 and working towards everyone at the funeral going wow! But she was such a good poor! She didn't drink or smoke or have a life all so she could use the money to buy vegetables and spend all day solving rich people's problems. She was skinny so she must have been healthy. Who knew that never having the time to rest or go to the Dr kills you just as fast as the vices of the poor
All of it just so you can sit on that money working towards an end goal that's never been there for you
Like you know what, it's not eating unhealthy foods and substance abuse and not knowing how to look after ourselves that kills us it's the life we've been left that drives people to those things in the first place and it'll kill you even if you do everything to avoid them
Eat as healthily as you can afford and avoid smoking and drinking you still won't be nearly as healthy as you'd be living a life living off the cream from your daddy's wealth while you tell everyone youre a self made man

in which you're first year in university and your intent is to focus on your studies; everything is going as planned until you have to do a project with Bokuto Koutarou

The lecture has already started. The professor hasn't stopped talking for fifteen minutes. Everyone were focused on him completely engrossed in the material.
You were in the first row right in front of the professor. It was your first year as a university student. It was a big deal for you, moving away, starting a new life, being independent and relying on yourself. You liked that but you knew you had to be very responsible and you decided to focus on your studies and not let yourself get carried away from your goals. This meant no parties, no more lazy afternoons and especially no boyfriends. This seemed like a perfect plan for you.
The professor's voice was suddenly interrupted by a loud noise. The door opened and everyone in the lecture hall turned their eyes on the person, causing all the chaos.
'Hey hey hey! Good morning, everyone! Good morning, professor! Sorry I'm late again.' said the guy who was constantly late for lectures.
You made a little noise out of annoyance. It was Bokuto Koutarou. You didn't really like him. Why? He was never ready for projects, never on time, always unnecessary loud and too cheerful for your taste. You could list way too many reasons of why you didn't enjoy his company. To be honest you only thought you didn't like him. Actually you wanted to be like him. Deep inside you admired him. Yes he wasn't the most responsible one but he had a way with people, which you were kinda envious of since you still hadn't made any friends. Bokuto was very confident and even if he said something wrong he didn't mind, you on the other hand had no courage to even raise your hand because you were scared of saying something that might not be right. To sum up Bokuto was everything you weren't.
'Bokuto... again? What happened this time?' asked the professor.
'I'm really sorry I stayed up late last night and couldn't wake up on time this morning.' answered the boy.
'Volleyball practice I assume?'
'Correct!'
'Okay but please try to be on time from now on.'
'Yessir!' cheerfully said Bokuto and since the only avaliable places were on the first row he sat next to you.
'Hi!' he said to you.
'Oh...hello.' you suddenly felt like it was getting hotter in the hall.
'Okay everyone I have an announcement to make.' declared the professor 'Your next task is a project and you have to work in pairs. The deadline is the last week of the semester which means you have one month. Choose your partner and tell me the groups till tomorrow. Goodbye, have a nice day!'
The professor left the hall. You started panicking as soon as he mentioned 'work in pairs'. You hated working in groups and on top of that you had no one to ask to be with you. You were deep in your thoughts when Bokuto asked:
'Hey, do you perhaps want to work with me on the project?' he smiled.
'Um...' you didn't really like the idea but you had no other option '... okay fine.'
'Cool! I'm Bokuto Koutarou by the way. Nice to meet you!'
'I'm Y/N.'
'Oh so it's Y/N! I've been wondering for some time. Your name is pretty!'
He said that so casually that it left you speechless. Your cheeks became pink and it got even hotter. Before you could even say something he asked you:
'So when are we starting with the project?'
'What about tomorrow?'
'Tomorrow!?' Bokuto was shocked. He's not the type of person who does school work immediately.
'Yes, tomorrow. Do you have a problem if we study in the library?
'Nope, not at all.'
'Okay tomorrow at 3pm in front of the library.'
'I'll be there, Y/N!'
------------------
Two hours had passed and Bokuto was nowhere to be seen. You ended up studying by yourself. The library was closing so you decided to head home. At that moment you saw Bokuto running to you.
'Y/N! I'm sorry I'm late! But I'm here now so let's study.'
'Okay but the library is closed.'
'Oh...I guess I was really late then.' he let out an awkward laugh.
You sighed and decided to act a little cold 'Look, I know you're not exactly that type of person but I would really appreciate it if you take this project seriously. I need to ace this subject.'
'Are you always this strict to yourself?' Bokuto was curious.
'What is that supposed to mean?'
'Well... don't you ever have fun? Like I know this is important to you but don't you go out with friends sometimes? Like... on a movie or... I don’t know?'
'I-...' you had hard time finishing you sentence 'I don't have any friends...'
'Huh?' he looked at you with his big curious eyes.
You felt embarrassed. You were ready for him to make fun of you.
'This is kinda good you know?'
'How come?'
'Because I can be your first friend!'
You were absolutely surprised and astonished by the way he talks so casually and reacts to things. Every time he said something you could feel the sincerity. You felt warm knowing there's at least one person who wanted to be your friend despite you completely isolating yourself from others.
-------------
It was the next day. You were on your way to the library where you were supposed to meet Bokuto for a study session. You couldn't stop thinking about what he said to you the previous day. He really was sweet but you decided to ignore any feelings and to focus only on the project.
'Hey hey hey!'
'Bokuto..?'
'Y/N! I'm on time as promised! Am I the best partner you've ever had or what?' he was so cheerful almost childlike and you couldn't help but chuckle a little.
'How did you manage to come on time?' you asked.
'Well... this is very important to you, right? So since we are friends it means that it is important to me as well.' Bokuto explained.
Again... this sincerity. Everything he's said to you made you genuinely happy.
-------------
Two weeks have passed since you and Bokuto started working on the project. You were having lunch at the cafeteria when you got a message from your new friend.
B: [Hey, Y/N! I have an important match soon and I have to stay at practice a bit longer.]
Y/N: [When will you be ready? You know the library closes at 5pm.]
B: [Do you mind coming to the gym? We can study here. I have the keys. You can watch the practice if you want to... ']
Y/N: [Okay, I'll be there when I'm ready.]
Your last lecture for the day was over and you went straight to the gym. There was no chance for you to not find it since the boys shouting and volleyballs bouncing left and right could be heard from miles away.
You opened the door and the sight of Bokuto jumping and spiking the ball as hard as he could breaking the blocks was right in front of your eyes. You realised that you knew nothing about Bokuto. The only Bokuto you knew was the one from lectures. Besides that you had no idea what is he like.
'Y/N you came! You really wanted to see me play, huh?' Bokuto said.
'Uhm... I just... I was curious.'
The boy left you alone since the coach scolded him for talking to you. You planned on studying while your project partner was playing but you found it hard to not look at Bokuto. You were amazed by his skills, especially when someone referred to him as ace. You had no idea he was the ace of the team. You felt guilty for misjudging Bokuto. You had no right to do that considering the fact that you knew almost nothing about him. He was actually very responsible, reliable, dedicated, hard-working and never gived up on anything.
The practice was finally over and both of you and Bokuto realised that you've been watching him the whole time.
'Y/N if you want to see me more on court come to our match!' he suggested.
You blushed. Why did you felt embarrassed by this question? Your eyes met and you couldn't say anything. You were standing right in front of him keeping an eye contact and wondering why couldn't you answer him. Then you felt something. It was like electricity going through your whole body. Everything made you blush even more and your whole face was burning.
'I'll take that as a Yes!' said Bokuto and left to change his clothes.
Your study session went well but why did you keep feeling weird? Why was it so hard for you to stay calm and focus? You were wondering the whole time and Bokuto sensed that there was something else on your mind.
'Y/N?' Bokuto cupped your cheeks and felt the heat from your skin 'You're burning! Are you okay?'
This single movement startled you and you panicked.
'Y-yes I'm fine don't worry, Bokuto! Let's stu-'
And before you could finish your sentence he pressed his lips on your forehead.
'Bokuto! What what are you doing?' You felt as if everything was out of control. What were you supposed to do in this situation?
'Just checking if you have temperature. My mother does it every time when I'm sick.'
How was he so calm you wondered. He basically kissed you on the forehead and acted like nothing has happened.
'Hmmm but I don't feel anything... why are you so hot then?'
You looked at him eyes wide open and still couldn't comprehend what just happened.
-----------
Days have passed and you felt weirder and weirder around Bokuto. You had a lot of fun on your study dates but every time you saw him or heard his voice it had an effect on you. Every day as soon as you woke up you couldn't wait to study with Bokuto. You always looked around hoping you would see him in the hallways. You were constantly checking your phone in case he sent you a message. Why were you acting that way? This was so not you. Everything cleared when you caught yourself daydreaming during lecture. It wasn't a regular daydream. You were thinking about Bokuto, his voice, his laugh, his silly jokes and that particular kiss. Then it hit you.
You liked Bokuto Koutarou.
With every day passing by you found it harder to concentrate especially when both of you were working on the project. Good thing is that you finished it on time. The week before the due date you barely saw Bokuto. The reason was that he spent every minute in the gym spiking, receiving and serving. His important match was on the day when you were supposed to present your work in front of the auditorium. Bokuto reassured you that the match would be before lunchtime so both of you would have enough time to go to the campus and do the presentation. Everything was going just as planned when you received a call from Bokuto.
'Hi, Bokuto! I'm almost ready you haven't started yet right?'
'No, we haven't. But... Y/N...'
'Hmm?'
'They've changed the schedule and our match is going to be exactly when we are supposed to do the presentation.'
'Oh... is there anything we can do?'
'Well I talked to the coach and some of the staff but nothing can be done... I'm sorry Y/N I really tried.'
'I know, don't worry.'
Both of you became silent.
'You know what... I'm going to campus and I'll talk to the professor.'
'Good idea, Y/N!'
'Don't worry and focus on your match, okay?'
You hung up and got on the bus.
It was time for Bokuto’s match. You haven't called since your conversation in the morning and you were nowhere to be seen. Bokuto started worrying. He thought that you decided to present by yourself. This made him a bit sad but he knew how important university is to you and he just hoped that you would do great.
Ten minutes since the start of the match and Bokuto was about to serve. His hands were sweaty and the nervousness got to him. He looked at the crowd hoping you would be there. And you were. You were waving at him and shouted:
'GO ACE!'
This was it. This was all he needed to stop all the negative thoughts in his head.
The match was over and as soon as the teams greeted each other Bokuto went straight to you and hugged you tight. The two of you were equally surprised by that.
'So you managed to come! When did the professor let us present then?' Bokuto asked.
'Actually... he didn't.' you smiled.
'What? Why? Then what are you doing here?' Bokuto was worried.
'I just really wanted to see you play.'
'What about the subject then?'
'Well... we both failed.'
'Y/N...why didn't you present?'
'And leave my partner? Never! Besides there will be another chances.'
Bokuto tilted his head a little. He was very confused and worried about you.
'Y/N how are you so calm? This was important to you.'
'Well yes but the match is important to you and since we are friends this means it's also important to me!'
Bokuto couldn't believe your words.
'Woah... you've really changed Y/N...'
'Thanks to you!' you giggled.
'Failing classes? I must be a bad influence then.' he said while scratching the back of his head.
'You actually taught me to have fun. You know... you always say to not choose what's easy but what's fun... so...'
'So...?'
'I've had the most fun with you, Bokuto. Therefore I choose you!'
Both of you blushed and couldn’t look at each other for a moment.
'Um... Bokuto?'
'Y-yes!' he looked at you.
'What I really meant to say is that... I like you, Bokuto.'
As soon as you confessed you closed your eyes out of embarrassment. Where did you get the courage to say those stuff? You again started panicking and just when you were thinking of running away you felt Bokuto’s soft lips on your cheek. You froze yet your whole body was burning.
'Not fair, Y/N... I wanted to say it first!'
'Huh?'
'I like you, Y/N.'
He kissed you again but this time on the lips and then hugged you tight.
'Now let's go and celebrate your win and our failure.' you suggested.
'You know... this is actually good.'
'Us failing? Why?'
'Because this means we can spend more time studying together!'
At that exact moment you realised that being in a university can be  more pleasant and interesting experience when you allow yourself to have fun.

Spooky Little Stories - Halloween special series (Tale III - Hvitserk)
Pairing: Modern!Hvitserk x OFC
Description: in this Halloween special series you’ll follow five tales, which one of them with a different Ragnarsson and a different pairing! A group of five friends travel to Kattegat in the last week of October to see if what people tell of that little town is true…
Every week a new chapter!
Warnings: swearings.
Word count: 3,246
A/N: due to Tumblr’s links problems, I’m not going to put here the link for my masterlist and my ask, but you all can keep up with the link for my masterlist in my bio!
The last thing I wanted to do was going to the camp, but Jule had a point: we couldn’t leave our friends behind, we couldn’t abandon them. We had to warn them, but the whole thing was this huge absurd - how could we make them believe us?
Me and Jule agreed that the first person we should focus our attention was Sam - because of Bjorn.
“Of course we have no evidence of what we think, and maybe we’re just nuts, but just in case…” Jule opened her backpack, taking a long and thick necklace from there.
“What does that mean? What is that?” I asked her.
“Silver,” I laughed. Jule gave me a sidelook.
“What? Do you- do you really think that this is a thing? For real?”
“Like I said: just in case.”
“And what do you expect to do with it? Melt the silver and make a bullet?”
“It wouldn’t be a bad idea - you see, in the It book…”
“I know, I know - I’ve read it too, Jule.”
“That was a long summer,” she said in an explaining tone, like if I would judge her by the fact that she read a long horror book that, I gotta say, wasn’t very much her style. “But I can’t make it, so maybe…” She was opening the necklace, handling it like if it was a chain.
“Jule, this is just a necklace - if you think that you can tie him…”
“Maybe if I use it to choke him…” She said, seeming to be completely inside her own head.
“Oh god,” I sighed. “I get that this necklace looks very strong, but I don’t think it can take Bjorn out.”
“Maybe just the good amount of time,” she looked at me, as if looking for support.
“I think we should just leave, Jule. Halloween is coming in five days, we can’t stay here.”
“I know,” Jule put the necklace around her neck and got up, kicking her backpack under the bed. “Let’s go for a walk,” she suggested with a smile on her face.
*
Arm by arm, I was walking through the trees with Jule, both of us quiet, thinking about all the strangeness of this trip.
I was thinking about Ubbe and his behavior, the way he talked with us about his brothers. I was thinking about the tale.
The tale, and Odin, and Fenrir, and the Ragnarssons.
Ubbe seemed so different than Bjorn… Bjorn was so confident that it was annoying, while Ubbe was chill. They had the same vibe, I thought, that savage, predator thing, but even like that, Ubbe still seemed chill.
If he was a werewolf, I wasn’t sure he would be defined as the bad one.
Maybe, if Ubbe is indeed a werewolf, he’s the good one. He seemed nice, controlled - and, when that word came to my mind, I remembered how his hands were shaking of anger, how his skin was red and then, all of a sudden, he was calm, simply by June’s touch.
It’s in his nature to be angry, a little voice said in the back of my head. But he controlled it, beautifully, I said back to the little voice.
“What are you thinking about?” Jule asked.
“Ubbe.”
“Me too. He looks like a good guy, doesn’t he?” I nodded. “Maybe he is. Maybe he can help us,” I stopped.
“No, Jule. We can’t put this man against his own blood.”
“Why not? He doesn’t seem to like his brothers, anyway - they don’t seem to get along; in fact, the impression I had it was that they’re a mess!”
“Do not interfere with blood, Jule.”
“I think he’s a hunter,” she said, completely plain. I choked.
“Excuse me?”
“I think he’s a hunter. Yes!” She said when I shook my head in disbelief. “Look what he said! That his brothers won’t help, that they do whatever they want and that is all just a mess! And his younger brother! Do you remember? He said that he helps Ubbe with all that stuff, but Ubbe would pretty much rather know what and how he’s doing instead of only getting results… I think Ubbe is trying to take his brothers down but he can’t accomplish it because they’re out of control, and his younger brother, doing whatever he wants without Ubbe knowing, even though that it helps him, it’s not much a help.”
“Jule, you’re tripping,” I said as I turned over to go back to the cabins. “All of this madness is just… too much for you.”
“It’s too much for you too,” Jule said, following me. “We need to find his other brothers.”
“No, we don’t.”
In the distance I heard Kimmy’s voice, calling for us.
“Hey, are you back already? Where did you go?”
“We’re just back from downtown.”
“Oh, speaking of which,” Kimmy was breathing hard, like if she was running. “Bjorn said that there’s a party, like a fair or a festival, in downtown tonight. We’re going,” I didn’t said a thing and Jule kept quiet too. “You’re two going, right? Because this was supposed to be a fun trip and we’re supposed to be together, but you two sneaked out to downtown to do whatever you did and… and I just wanted to travel with you guys,” I could feel in the air how Kimmy was upset with that.
“I’m so sorry, Kimmy,” Jule started to say
“It’s too much for me being here, I’m sorry. I didn’t want to go deep in the woods where Bjorn took you guys, so I kinda grabbed Jule with me so I could take a breath for a moment.”
“But we’re all here - together. If you talked to us, we all could be together, and it would be so much better for you, wouldn’t it be? All of your friends with you?” I could see that Kimmy meant it.
“I… I just thought that Bjorn was more interesting than my traumas,” Kimmy laughed without joy.
“No man is more interesting than my friend,” she grabbed my hand. “It makes me sad that you didn’t reach out to us because of that, but I’m here now. Do you want to go to the party?” When she saw doubt in my face, she added. “It will be in downtown,” she said, emphasizing that it won’t be in the woods.
“I don’t wanna be alone,” I confessed.
“You won’t be!” Jule grabbed my other hand. “And I bet that Halston won’t leave you.”
“But what about Sam?” Jule understood 100% what I meant, and she looked at Kimmy.
“I have no idea what’s going on with her. I get that sometimes women are all over men, but this… this is different. She looks like a servant, like a puppy. I don’t like that,” Kimmy said and I exchanged looks with Jule.
I had no knowledge on werewolves, but that looked pretty much like the result of that gone scar that was on Sam’s back.
“I’ll go the fair,” I said, sounding decided. Kimmy gave me a big smile and Jule gave an eye support. We need to find Ubbe, I read in her lips, and I nodded slightly.
*
I had to give that folk what to say, because I had no idea where they were hiding the whole day - the festival was crowded.
You could barely walk without bumping into someone’s shoulder - when you had space where to walk.
The music was loud and the smell of food being cooked in fire was taking place.
I wasn’t giving a shit about what Kimmy was going to think, and at that point I wasn’t feeling like hiding anything from her.
“We need to find Ubbe!” I said out loud, trying to be heard over the music. Jule nodded and started looking around.
“Who?” Kimmy shouted back.
“Ubbe! We met him earlier today, he’s Bjorn’s brother!” I answered. I knew Kimmy, and I thought that she would straighten herself, interested in a guy that she had never seen before, but I think that whatever was going on with Sam, it made her more serious about it.
“Do you think he can help?” I nodded positively to Kimmy’s question. Okay, I read her lips.
“We should walk around, see if we can spot him. Maybe he’s near the bar,” Jule suggested. I was in the middle, holding hands with Jule and Kimmy so we wouldn’t separate.
From afar, a guy was staring at us. I looked at him and immediately got shivers all over my body. The spider tingle, I thought. He ignored me and his eyes went straight to Kimmy. I looked at her.
It was no surprise that she was looking back at him, amazed - not because she was Kimmy, but because, nowadays, I was taking for serious my spider senses. Whoever that guy was, I’m sure he was one of Ubbe’s brothers. I squeezed Jule’s hand and pointed with my head to the new guy - she looked at him.
“He was the guy who Ubbe threw that towel at the bar,” Jule whispered in my ear or, well, screamed in my ear.
“How do you know that? I didn’t see that guy!” I answered.
“I have a good eye. I don’t have a good feeling about this, we need to keep Kimmy away from him,” I nodded.
“Kimmy, let’s go,” I said to her and pushed her. I could hear her saying what, starting to ask something.
“There!” Jule pointed forward, near the bar. At the tip of my toes I could see Ubbe’s head, his blonde hair glowing with the night light. He was over his bar’s door, drinking from what looked like a horn. Jule pushed me and I took Kimmy with me.
“Girls!” Ubbe complimented when we got close. “I didn’t expect to see you here. How ya doing? Who’s your friend?” He looked at Kimmy, genuinely curious.
“That’s Kimmy, she came with us,” Jule said.
“Pleasure to meet you, Kimmy. I’m Ubbe.”
“Hi,” she said, sounding dizzy. Ubbe frowned.
His frown meant something, and I looked at Jule. She was studying him, as he was studying Kimmy. It was obvious that he knew what was up with her.
“Was she with you all the time?” He asked.
“Yeah.”
“Good. Keep it that way. It’s not safe here,” Ubbe said and opened the door, signing for us to get in. Jule entered without a second guess. I guided Kimmy inside and Ubbe entered before me, looking outside before closing the door.
The lights were dim and the music was muffled. It was warm inside. Ubbe guided Kimmy to one of the toolbars and lift her face by the chin so she would look up at him, avaliating her eyes.
“You guys think I’m crazy?” Ubbe asked, looking over at me and Jule.
“You would think we’re crazier than you, then,” Jule said, and that said it all. Ubbe understood us and we understood him. A silent understanding. He nodded only once before he started to talk.
“I think your friend made eye contact with one of my brothers. I mean, it’s not that our eye contact is dangerous - only when we want to.”
“Are you saying she’s under some kind of spell?” I asked.
“I wouldn’t put it in those words, but…” He tilted his head. “In lack of words, yes. She’s enchanted. We need to keep her inside until this fades away - with all that people, maybe she’ll be lucky and it will come back to normal soon enough.”
“And what is it?” Jule asked. “The… this magic thing.”
“We’re predators,” Ubbe said and went inside the bar. “So we have powers,” he came back with a wet towel. He pressured it against Kimmy’s forehead. She seemed somewhat catatonic. “I still don’t know which of my brothers it was, but this was a way to keep her in his tracker - among all those people, he wants to find her. It’ll keep her close to him, like a magnet.”
“It was the one from today earlier,” Jule said. “He left through the back door. I recognized the hair.”
“Hvitserk,” Ubbe said his name and shook his head. “He was a good guy, good-intentioned. After our father’s death we broke apart and Hvitserk just… I think he just lost himself. He didn’t get along with my other brothers, but he did start acting by himself. This town is just a mess. I’m sorry you got involved in all this shit.”
“I’ll take care from here,” Jule grabbed the towel from Ubbe’s hand, touching his skin. If I was Jule I wouldn’t trust Ubbe to make eye contact with him, but it was clear that he wasn’t a bad guy. He was one of the good werewolves. Maybe he was a hunter, indeed. Just like Jule said.
“I haven’t seen Sam after we met with Kimmy,” I pointed to Jule. “Or Halston,” I bit my lip, clearly worried with my oldest friend.
“Sam is the girl that Bjorn has?” Ubbe asked. I hated how he put it - has -, but he was right. If what Kimmy said was right, then Bjorn had Sam. I nodded.
“I don’t want to frighten you girls, but Bjorn’s dangerous. He’s the oldest, so he’s stronger than all of us. The first born is always the stronger.”
“And what does it say about the younger?” Jule asked.
“Usually that they’re the brains. They would combine their strength with their intelligence, but… my younger brother have some conditions. Maybe that’s why he’s so absent and doesn’t let me know what he’s doing. We would be so much stronger together,” Ubbe closed his eyes and clenched his jaw.
“Those errands that you run,” I started.
“They’re really errands, in part. We do have a lot of business to take care,” Ubbe recomposed himself. “Like I said, after my father’s death, my brothers just went in an euphoria state. They lost control. They fight for territory and Kattegat has never seen so much death before. It’s a sad, terrible thing. I try to stop them, but I can’t. It’s way too much for me, alone. I’m not strong enough,” Ubbe was staring his hands, feeling probably incapable.
Then, someone screamed outside.
And that scream led to complete mess.
Outside, everyone was screaming and running, trying to get away from whatever that caused the panic.
“What’s going on?” I heard Kimmy asking, slowly.
“This is an ambush,” Ubbe said.
I was looking through the window, trying to spot Sam or Halston, until I recognized her. Halston’s hair was something that I could never miss, and there she was, hoping up on someone’s bike and leaving.
“What the fuck?! Is that Halston? Halston! Oh my god what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck?!” I panicked. My best friend, in the middle of that mess, in a town full of werewolves, taking off with a guy on a bike? This was bad news. “Does any of your brothers ride a bike?” I asked Ubbe in a urge.
“All of us,” he answered simply, looking for something.
“That’s great.”
“Are you sure it was Halston?” Jule asked. I nodded.
“One hundred percent.”
“Halston?” Kimmy asked. “Halston… Bjorn got her a date tonight.”
Slowly, processing her words, I turned around. Ubbe stopped looking for whatever he was looking.
“Can you elaborate more of that, please?” I asked carefully.
“Bjorn… We were talking about music, and everyone knows the huge crush that Halston has on musicians… Bjorn has a brother that plays the guitar…”
“That’s great!” Ubbe slammed the bar.
“That son of a b-”
But, before I could even finish my sentence, something stormed inside the bar. Broken glass took place in the air and I covered my face, trying to get under one of the tables.
“Jule?” I called for her over all that messy sound. People outside were still running and screaming.
“Ubbe!” Called a hoarse voice, decided. “You have something of mine,” that voice made me reach my alarming state. It scared the shit out of me. It wasn’t a human voice - I mean, it was clear that belonged to a man, but not a man on complete human form. That voice belonged to a man who was somewhere into his wolf form.
Under the table I had no view of what was happening, and I hate to admit that I was too scared to take a peak, so I just stayed there.
“Is that just you or are you all involved?” Ubbe asked.
“Why do you care, brother? You’re too weak. Without Ivar, you can’t do shit,” the man laughed. “Gods, not even with Ivar you can do shit. Ivar’s a broken man.”
“Hvitserk, cut that shit out.”
“It’s true! Look, brother, I don’t want to fight - all I want is my belonging.”
“The girl isn’t yours,” Ubbe said firmly.
“Oh, isn’t she? Watch me.”
I don’t know what happened because I wasn’t looking, but I heard the sound of something being cut and Kimmy scream. After her, Jule screamed too, and only then I left the place I was hiding, because I couldn’t bare hear my friends screaming - I had to do something.
Ubbe was fighting with Hvitserk, breaking glasses and beer bottles. I went to Kimmy - Jule was so afraid that she couldn’t move from the corner where she was.
“Don’t touch her!” I heard Ubbe screaming. I stopped, my hands raising in the air in front of me.
“Why?”
“Do not touch the blood!” It was all Ubbe gave me. I looked over them, and Hvitserk gave me a pointy smile that was so terrifying that I had no control over the tears that came out.
And it was there, with me standing halfway to Kimmy that a big and dark wolf stormed in, growling to Ubbe and Hvitserk. Both brothers looked over the animal, but only Hvitserk seemed a bit scared. The wolf attacked Hvitserk, throwing him away through the window, at the alley.
Once Ubbe was free he came to me and Kimmy.
“Don’t touch her, Ella. The blood that comes out from a werewolf wound has properties. Only the Gods know what can do to a human…”
“I know,” I answered, connecting the dots in a second. “When I saw you the first time I felt something, I knew… you were somewhat related to Bjorn. I felt the same with Hvitserk when I saw him out there…”
“When he enchanted Kimmy?”
“Yeah. I already knew he was one of you.”
“I need to take care of her and make sure she will be very distant from Hvitserk.”
“Who was that?” Jule asked, coming slowly closer to us.
“What do you mean?” Ubbe asked, clearly trying to dodge the subject.
“The werewolf, Ubbe. Who was that?”
“That’s not important, not now,” Ubbe shook his head. He lift Kimmy on his arms. “You two, please go upstairs. It’s safe there. I’ll prepare the room for Kimmy where we can take care of her and you can rest. Just, please… don’t make questions now. I’ll answer all of it tomorrow, but first we need to focus.”
We agreed to those terms and went upstairs, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Halston getting away with a werewolf, and if that would be the last image I had of her.

What is causing teacher workload and what can we do about it?
Tumblr media
If you’re a teacher, have a phone and follow any education media channel, you will know of the inexhaustible amount of articles and posts about teacher workload. A dramatic headline, a Photostock image of a teacher with their head in their hands surrounded by paper and overwhelming figures of educators agreeing once more, for the hundredth time this week, that enough is enough and something has to change. 40% of teachers don’t see themselves staying in the job in the next five years because of workload so clear action is needed, fast. We are spending too much time calculating and dramatizing, rather than unpicking what workload is and sharing concrete ways of reducing it. I understand that there cannot be a ‘one size fits all’ approach to creating a work-life balance, but come on, people, we’re a smart bunch. We can and will make positive changes and make teaching the stimulating, fascinating career we want it to be.
Remember I said we need to stop calculating and start unpicking? Well, forgive me for a moment, because I did have to do some maths of my own first. Real life maths, here folks, I’ll be expecting my gold stars from any Maths leads out there. I created a savvy survey, asking teachers to select as many options as to what causes their workload. The choices were: meetings, moderation, marking, extra curricular activities, testing/coursework, environment/displays, behaviour and planning. Some participants also noted that data drops and collection should be a category too. 18 people voted, invited by a wide range of networks, ensuring the data is from a wide range of practices and settings. It was anonymous however, so there is no way to formally confirm this. Chilled out internet and blog research for you. So, let’s see what four aspects caused the highest amount of workload and then let’s be productive. I’ll share with you some tangible methods I have found from across the internet which could be used to reduce these issues.
Right at the top, unsurprisingly was marking. Some schools expect teachers to ‘deep mark’ several times per week, in multiple subjects. This varies in methodology but essentially, it means correcting spellings and grammar; giving positive feedback; giving constructive feedback; allowing time for children to respond to this and then replying to the child. It’s a visible way of showing Ofsted that children are making progress on specific targets after each piece of work. However, Ofsted have repeatedly published that extensive marking does not necessarily indicate good teaching or progress.
The easiest way of addressing marking is to mark less. Teachers should decide which pieces of work are worth marking in such detail and meaningless ticking and flicking should be banned because it doesn’t give specific and meaningful feedback. This is not to suggest that pieces of work should be ignored, books should still be looked at and misconceptions should be noted or implemented into the next lesson. It doesn’t have to be this way. Marking can take form in different mediums, from the aforementioned written medium, to verbal feedback, which is becoming more popular. Although there isn’t a lot of research about verbal feedback yet, giving children immediate feedback is more effective in overcoming errors quickly and reduces the burden of writing lengthy comments, proving especially meaningful to those children with low reading attainment. This feedback can also be given in groups, rather than individually, where teachers can discuss previous misconceptions and guide them through a similar task, to close the gap. Regardless of where your school sits on the ‘written/verbal’ spectrum, it seems clear that it’s important to trust teachers to make the judgement as to how they give feedback, as long as it’s of high quality. The quality should be consistent and developed across the school. In some lessons, it’s not going to be practical for you to give feedback to four different groups. In this lesson, perhaps you’ll ‘live mark’ with a few children, whereby you mark their book alongside them, showing them how to correct their work meaningfully.
In summary, the ways marking can be reduced are:
Remove in depth marking unless completely necessary. Agree as a department as to what ‘necessary’ means and how the marking can be meaningfully used e.g. to plan the next unit or moderate. Two birds, one stone.
Use as much live marking within a lesson to reduce your workload after school. Although this needs to be considered  alongside the lesson itself in terms of content and behaviour.
Value in depth verbal feedback as much as written feedback. Be specific as you would if you were writing it down and use your understanding of their previous learning to group children where possible.
I understand that as a class teacher, marking policies may be out of your control and there will be only so much you can do. But if something is becoming unmanageable, raise your concerns and share ways that could help reduce marking. I’ll also add here that children are more than their books and building a human connection by talking to them about their work and celebrating with them, face to face, might really brighten their day, and yours.
Tumblr media
Next, is behaviour. I was surprised at how high it ranked. Dealing with challenging behaviour isn’t similar to writing excessive amounts of feedback in books. I struggled to see the paperwork aspect to it, unless the participants meant logging data and incidents. Yet, if we unravel the issue, unruly behaviour can stop learning altogether, especially for teachers with less experience. So, in turn, one can assume, less learning in class, means more work to make up the missed learning time. Or, incidents in class can lead to more meetings about them, taking up preparation time.
I think it would be very patronising of me to write how to manage behaviour effectively. After all, you know your school and your kids much better than I do. If you are after a list of good tips, try this one. What I will discuss are ways we can reduce the quantity of behaviour incidents for teachers as well as the work that comes with it. Detentions should be localised, to minimise teachers spending their lunch and break times indoors with pupils . Remember, you are entitled to a lunch break. Also, staff should be able to call on others for support during lesson time, to minimise disruption and resultant time spent clawing back learning time. Furthermore, we should be logging incidents in concise, simple ways without excessive detail, using technology where possible to minimise time spent on these tasks.
Equal to behaviour, was planning. I remember as a trainee, spending hours and hours on one plan for an observation, ensuring that I had six levels of differentiation, a three page document on how support staff were deployed and hundreds of links to other areas of the curriculum. I would print it out and tick it religiously as the observation took place. I found them completely necessary for me to stay calm and collected during a lesson. Nowadays, are they as crucial? Well, kind of. A well-planned lesson enables you to consider differentiation, whole class assessment and timings  But, the task can become burdensome when planning formats change; information is pointlessly copied and pasted between two formats and irrelevant information is needed.
I think an obvious way of making planning more friendly, is to make planning grids and paperwork minimal, putting more focus on Powerpoints and whiteboards instead. Yes, note where you’re meeting the curriculum and different learners’ needs but for information which guides the lesson such as pair work, timings and videos, just put them on the whiteboard instead. It helps the children too. But, if you’re like trainee teacher me and need that concrete piece of writing, do what works for you. After all, Ofsted won’t ask you for a lesson plan but they will see your lesson. Dividing planning and working together is a recommended way to reduce workload but a luxury not avaliable to those working in one form entry schools. Where possible, use teaching sites like Tes and Twinkl to find prepared plans and resources, to speed the process but remember to adapt them for your learners. I’m not personally convinced that any scheme of work or technology can simply reduce planning workload and I don’t think any bought in scheme should replace a teacher’s own ideas and creativity. Using and adapting them seems best. Planning is one of the best parts of the job, where you can inspire children and make learning fun.
Next, were meetings. It would have been effective to ask teachers how many meetings they attend and for what reasons. From conversations with different staff from a range of schools, it seems fair to assume most teachers attend at least two meetings lasting from forty minutes to an hour each week. This increases with the amount of responsibility the teacher has. Or, they may have an NQT meeting. Forgive me for assuming, we’ll have to quantify another time. Meetings can include information on pedagogy, schools events, professional development and school improvement plans . Meetings, if delivered effectively, are very useful periods for colleagues to collaborate and develop their skills. If excessive and unhelpful, the time for other tasks is taken away, adding to workload.
You may have spotted a pattern by now, the best way to make an impact, is to have less meetings.  If information can be shared electronically, then it should be shared electronically. Some staff must attend, perhaps for others, the meeting isn’t vital for their development so their time can be spent elsewhere or information can be passed to them.
As I mentioned before, I do understand that if you’re class based, there may only be so much you can do but I hope that at least one of the strategies is realistic for you. Remember, being stressed and unwell as a result, is not an expectation of any job. Workload was given as a reason as to why half of teachers in the UK have a mental health problem . If you are struggling, speak to a colleague who can put these changes in place or talk to your GP .You can use the NEU’s advice kit for tackling these issues further, too  and for union advice.
I can’t think of another job where you’re working with astronauts in the morning and archaeologists in the afternoon. Teaching is a fantastic career and the more we do to tackle workload, the better it will become. Let’s make some positive changes for educators and children alike.
Do you have more suggestions as to how we can reduce workload? Or maybe you would like some ideas on the ideas mentioned? Why not tweet me @mimmerr?
