synopsis:

In 1930s Chicago, Sidney Marshall (LaBeouf) is found dead in his apartment under suspicious circumstances -- those circumstances being a letter opener suspiciously stuck in his back. The murder makes the papers but shocks nobody: Marshall’s byline appeared under articles digging into every powerful and corrupt person in the city, leaving no stone unturned and no hornet’s nest unkicked. Anyone who knows his work assumes that his death is in retaliation for an article, but the police -- also once targets of Sidney’s pen -- call it a random home invasion and close the case. Sidney’s landlady Helena (Tomei) refuses to accept this conclusion and decides to investigate the murder for herself, calling upon her vast network of...somewhat unsavory contacts to help her. She also goes to see Sidney’s editor (Shannon) at the paper, demanding to know what he was working on, suspecting that that was what led to his death.

His editor is at as much of a loss as Helena, explaining that Sidney always kept quiet about what story he planned to tackle next. Sidney brought the articles, they printed them, and no one asked too many questions because the circulation was up. Ostensibly clearing out the apartment for the next tenant, Helena, digs through Sidney’s files and finds nothing: no notes, no drafts, no research, nothing that suggest he’d done any writing at all in his time. We learn in flashbacks of his interactions with her that he was always hesitant to talk about his work. At the time, she had assumed it was modesty, but now she suspects that it was something else. The only lead she can find in his office is the address of a tailor’s shop, and when she goes there, she finds Ava (Zendaya), a girl whose guilty conscience is written all over her face -- but guilt about what? And how does it connect to Sidney? All that Helena knows is that she’s on the trail of something, and the more danger she finds around every corner, she more convinced she becomes that she’s getting closer to finding her friend’s killer.

yeah since nerd stuff is hip now they've started releasing them in HC, same with star wars novels. only with the big titles they're pushing though

uggghhhh, i’m still dealing with some bitterness that tie in novels are a cool thing now and not a semi-shameful thing to be into, and that they get in already semi-famous authors to do them as a draw. and tie in stuff being almost required to know the proper backgrounds of what is happening in canon. and then to price it like that???

and i saw this afternoon, they’re putting out a Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway later this year too, which I desperately want and that’s going to be like $40-50. 

hopefully trek isn’t going to get too much like that, like you said, only the bigger stuff being hc and pricey, and they do have a lot of the same authors who have been doing it for years still working.

i’d sure think so!! but it seems like everyone i talk to has a story about how they had to fight tooth and nail to not get picked even though they all had varying degrees of reasons why they couldn’t do it, so i’m a little paranoid about it

plus for some reason they only provide one way to contact them about this sort of thing and it’s an online form where they ask you to also pick another day to come in for jury duty. postponement is the only option provided, and the dates they provide are... not good. i’m not really keen on rescheduling for the day after my surgery. so i guess i’m currently banking on this next date getting postponed again or cancelled, or, if i do get called in, hoping i don’t get picked once i explain about the appointment/surgery

#it DOES feel like i’d have higher chances of success if i could Talk To A Person #but ive yet to find a number for that. i want to have Words with whoever revamped the website since my last jury duty

Noor lets out a squeak of surprise as she loses her balance, but between Nik, who catches her by the arm, and Farhan, who immediately puts up a hand to stop her, it’s less of a fall and more of a dramatic lean backwards. She’s back to braiding Nik’s hair in a minute, unfazed and still bouncing in place.

yknow, while i figure out what exactly is the right time and temperature to bake these at to not burn all the color out of the clay, i’ll probably end up with a good number of rejects, so... painting em neon does sound like a good way to make it fun. probably take less coats of paint than light colors, too

#could have a full neon spectrum of these earrings #molding the clay for that many earrings would take several days but i mean #i wasn’t sure what else to get her #and opening a box and finding a good half dozen or so earrings in the form of a fucked up lil dude #is admittedly way better than finding only one pair of earrings of a fucked up lil dude. and more fun in neon

Yeah, some of these people seem to only be in it for the validation and that is not healthy and they’re attempting to take it out on everyone else when they don’t get enough to satisfy them.
