HI!!!! Please tell me everything about A Doll's House! (I read it for a course in high school, but that was ages ago)

Aaahh!! Where to start?? What to say?? My inner theatre-nerd is escaping it's hold, I apologise in advance...

‘A Doll’s House’ is a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen from 1879. It was written in the middle of a period of Scandinavian literature known as The Modern Breakthrough, which had as an aim to show the problems in society - for instance the relationship between man and woman and especially women’s role in society.

The play is about Nora, wife of Helmer and mother of two, who lives a traditional upper-middle class life - at least on the surface. At first glance, she seems simplified and naive, but as the play progresses, the audience gets more and more insight into her character, showing her to be very multifaceted. She might continue to be naive throughout most of the play, but she also shows herself to be independant (quite a contrast to the 'regular' woman of the time) and ready to take extreme and drastic actions in times of need. Quite controversially (for that time and now), the play ends with her leaving her husband and children behind to go out and figure out who she is herself and what kind of society she lives in.

In the beginning of the play, we are presented with a character who’s very like the typical 1800’s wife, but she has a secret that is revealed to the reader early on - she has broken the law, but she's done so in order to save her husband and family. No one really knows about this, though, so to the outside world, she’s the perfect example of a wife and a mother. It is, however, a bit of a double life. Behind closed, closed doors (because her husband doesn't know her secret either), she has gone against many of society’s norms and rules. She also has these thoughts about how society should be and is very disappointed when she learns that it isn’t like that - and when her husband turns out not to want to help her, too focused on how her actions reflect on him (where she thought he'd be proud of what she did, how she fixed their problems when he couldn't), she realises that she knows very little of the real world, and that the ideas she has about what’s right and wrong don’t match up with society’s. This is what leads her to part with her former life - she realises that she’s just been a doll in a doll’s house for others to play with, and famously says to her husband that “You have never loved me. You have only thought it pleasant to be in love with me.” - like she sort of realises that she was never seen as an actual person but more like an accessory to him, that he never knew the real her and that he definitely never loved the real her (she isn't even sure who she really is herself - but she puts herself before her husband and children to go out into the world to figure it out).

The play very clearly shows how everyone - her husband, society - has certain expectations as to who she is and how she should behave and how the reaction when she breaks out of this mold is quite bad. If we were to turn it towards Harry, I do feel like there are some similarities to Harry here - there's a very clear idea of who he is from the outside world that fits quite poorly with who he shows us he actually is - a kind of dissonance between his public persona and the glimpses of his personal self we've seen throughout the years (and he has quite a big a secret, shhh). I think the quote is quite fitting here too - many people love the idea of het!Harry though the narrative doesn't actually fit real life and so they don't love him for who he actually is. Harry, too, is leading a bit of a double life - what's presented to the public and then what's real. And I'd wager that he has also felt a bit like a doll in a doll's house for others to play with at times...

thank youuuuu! i appreciate you playing along with me haha i only just had time to do my fic list, so i'm only now allowing myself to answer things. thank you for waiting hehe

22: how much of your own self/experiences do you believe pours into your projects? if this differs per project, which projects have the most and least of you?

haaaaaaa it really does depend on the project. some have a LOT of me in them and others have less, but i do think that a pretty decent portion of myself is intertwined with my fics always. little facets of their characters, the way they prefer things to be done, favorite restaurants, etc are often things i love and am drawn to, but as to which ones have the most of me in them? i mean, a few different ones come to mind. mostly my a-spec alpha babies and then also my big bang from several years ago now, my sweet home alabama au.

a LOT of louis' feelings and experiences regarding sex and his own sexuality in my a-spec alphas fic come down to my own experiences and feelings and that's a lot tbh. it felt huge to be able to put that down into a fic in that way and i'm so grateful to @so-why-let-your-voice-be-tamed for putting that prompt into the reverse bang this year and allowing me to jump in head first in the way i did because it was validating and massive and yeah. incredible really.

my sweet home alabama au was similar and yet very very different. i kind of thought i had already worked through a lot of my feelings and emotions that were surrounding my own personal miscarriage by that point and i wanted to be able to write a character who had dealt with it similarly. i had always identified with that aspect of reese's character in the film because of the fact she lost the baby and basically ran away so she wouldn't have to relive it constantly and i hadn't done that, had never really wanted to, but it always made me think and wonder and confront the small part within me that did wonder what it might be like to start fresh and be able to act like some things had never happened. so i wrote it in a way that i felt like louis would have to explain and deal with it all and help harry learn more and understand finally and it was a lot more emotional than i thought it would be. i didn't expect myself to be quite so fully enveloped by those characters and their stories, but i was and it was so freeing and healing to be able to pour so much of my own darkness that still surrounds that time for me into their own experiences there. so yeah. a very large part of me is in that fic as well.

as for which fic has the least of me in it? lmaooooo not sure honestly hahahaha i'll have to sit on that one for a bit more.

23: what do you do to engage with your projects which isn’t actually writing? ex: playlists, pinterest boards, etc. how much do they play a role in the development of your work?

this is an interesting thought! sometimes i make playlists, but it's a lot like @juliusschmidt said where it's not necessarily used for writing, i use it because it helps get me in the mood of my fic or it gets me thinking about the fic and i can kind of daydream more about what i'm going to write next. i haven't used it in that way much lately, but i have a lot in the past and i like it a lot! sometimes songs evoke specific emotions i'm trying to harness in a scene, so i'll have a playlist for those as well. i don't really do pinterest, i kinda hate it actually, so i don't use that, i'm NOT a visual person like... at all, so moodboards and aesthetic posts and such are more just a waste of time for me lol if i'm stuck i do ramble about my fics to other people because i am an outward processor. i need to explain things to people in order for my own thoughts to make sense, so that helps me a lot. i also do the last line challenges or share snippets and such as often as i can because that helps keep me motivated, and if i'm motivated i'm far more likely to keep writing so... yeah. lollll but yeah, i dunno! usually i just... write i think? haha so i'm not sure i do much more around my fics than just... that hahaha

i do try to think about them as i fall asleep at night, though, because between that and thinking blocks over while i'm in the shower or in the car, those times are when i come up with the solutions most often haha

Oh gosh, writing dark moments is not easy for me. I think I struggled the most writing a scene from "The First Year" where some homophobic people verbally berate H. It wasn't easy to get to the headspace and imagine it happening, but it was a necessary part of the story.
