On Repeat Tag Game
I was tagged by @bengiyo and @troubled-mind to put my repeat playlist on Spotify on shuffle and list the first 10 songs. Thank you both! ⸜( *ˊᵕˋ* )⸝
As always it's a little bit all over the place, but here are my 10!
aeseaes - Carrion Comfort
youtube
I have liked all aeseaes songs I have heard so far. This one I heard for the first time as I was re-reading Abarat by Clive Barker, where the villain (who fascinated me as a teen) is called Christopher Carrion, and the song has been haunting me since. Also I can't resist some cannibalism imagery.
Luther Vandross - Your Secret Love
youtube
Haha okay, so maybe I listened to this one on loop while I was working on my Love in Translation's gifset. I just really, really like this song - I am a sucker for love songs, and he is so, so good at it. Plus, what a voice...
안예은 Ahn Ye Eun - 홍련 (紅蓮) HONGRYEON
youtube
Alright, I discovered Ahn Ye Eun (kinda) literally two days ago thanks to @petrichoraline and I already have three songs of hers in the on repeat (the other 2 are Trumpet Creeper and Changgwi). She has an incredible voice, her instrumentals are so rich, and I adore how she plays around with horror themes and traditional myths. I am a little obsessed. (I'd recommend going down the comms a little, someone translated the lyrics and gave a few notes)
Debout sur le zinc - La déclaration
youtube
That's my favorite song of theirs and one of my favorite love song period. It's very sweet, but my favorite is the ending verse where he says. "It's a bit of a declaration [of love] even if I know that you're not/ the remedy nor the solution, just a splint on my arm/that small thing linking us to others when we don't do well/an ultimate language of survival that put the world back on its axis" - recognizing that love won't heal him entirely but is still necessary for him to survive.
Jonathan Hultén - Where Devils Weep
youtube
I cannot for the life of me remember how I found this one, but the sorrowful music with those, in the end, hopeful lyrics have been a pick me up the past week.
Déportivo - Les Bières Aujourd'hui S'ouvrent Manuellement
youtube
Deportivo is a french rock band from my teen years, so this cover is a bit of a throwback. This is a quietly sad song about a man realizing that his long term relationship has run its course - "It will always be a mystery to me/how the body get used to it/when love dies slowly". It talk about the very mundane things (his partner turning their back at him when they go to bed, the clicking of their spoon the only sound between them as they dine) that made him realize they are not in love anymore.
The Real Zebos – Puttin' On the Ritz
youtube
Tons of covers of this song exist (I do love Taco's version from like 1982 I think). This one came up in the spotify recs and it clicked for me. Love the singer's voice, and it feels fresh without losing it's original vibe.
Simon & Garfunkel - America
youtube
I have slowly been working my way through Simon & Garfunkel's discography over the last few months -because all their songs I grew up with I love. But since I discovered this one, it's a go to when I feel down and I need something for comfort (there is something that makes me feel heard in "Katie I'm lost I said though I knew she was sleeping. I'm empty and aching and I don't know why").
เงา (SHADOW) - LAZYLOXY
youtube
Guess what show I'm excited for!!!!! Joke aside, I put Lazyloxy's opening for Rakdiao on loop for weeks when I watched that show, so the moment this came out spotify stuffed it under my nose and I really like it!
Elisabeth (2005) - Marktplatz in Wien (Milch)
youtube
Like last year, October somehow means I start putting the 2005 live recording in Vienna of Elisabeth on repeat. I love musicals, and I have a special relationship to this one (it's the musical that got me into Takarazuka and my first German musical). This song always scratches the itch perfectly so I listen to it even more than the rest of the album (all songs with Lucheni are top tiers for me)
If you feel like doing it, I will tag @petrichoraline, @sparklyeyedhimbo, @scienceoftheidiot, @howdydowdy, and @iguessitsjustme !

oh god i literally forgot i reblogged this i am so sorry
2. favorite fic of the year
I found the Goncharov (1973) (Fake Fandom) fics to be extremely well-written actually? And like good for us tbh
his wife has filled his house with chintz by flowers4flowers is 1) named after one of my favorite tumblr posts and 2) a great character study for a character that doesn't exist. [chef kiss]
6. favorite playlist of the year
Am I allowed to plug my own playlists? I'm going to
The AOAdjacent playlist has been very fun to add songs to! I like listening to it when I write and/or when I get tired of the official one!
11. favorite OC you met this year
Once again gonna plug myself: in January of this year I had a dream that turned into a new WIP and it has not left me alone since. Assam Keelback [Real Name Pending], my soft he/they mage, has been a constant presence this year. Here's a link to my WIP tag for it if you're interested in the tiny scraps I've thrown out this year
25. best movie you watched this year
I saw The Legend Of Laputa/Castle in the Sky for the first time with my polycule this year! It was an absolutely gorgeous movie, Studio Ghibli just doesn't miss
26. best song you listened to this year
MANNNNN
I'm really sad that brockhampton dropped their last album(s) this year, there were a lot of songs on The Family and TM that I love. I got really into Dounia this year too, she's very cool. I've been into Crobot too, they're good if you like rock, I put their whole discography on shuffle when I get in that mood. Dance Fever by Florence + the Machine drove me insane. Megan Thee Stallion dropped Traumazine this year too FUCK!! THERE SO MUCH GOOD MUSIC THIS YEAR I CANT POSSIBLY ANSWER THIS QUESTION

happy saturday!! how has your weekend been going? 😊
I think you're right that they are the only group who've all been radio hosts! it does take so much charisma and being super well-spoken. they're very impressive as a group, definitely a bunch of all-rounders!
wanted is so good! I stumbled upon it randomly, it is such a shame it doesn't get much promotion. if I'm not mistaken that entire album wanted was on was about a month before one of a kind so definitely no promotion despite the music being SO so good! I tend to listen to a group's entire discography once I become a fan, so even the ones I missed I feel really attached to. helps that everything is so good :)
omg you're so right, the hair he had for fighter was SO so cute. he does look amazing with darker hair, I also love when it's kind of in the middle (like a latte color!) he just suits all hair colors <3
what are your favorite minhyuk parts of songs? (a little harder of a question I think 😭)
- monbebe secret santa #1 ☃️ <- you can use this emoji if you want to differentiate <3
hi hi!! i'm so sorry for the late reply i have been having so many issues with my laptop lately it's crazy 😭 everything's fixed right now but fingers crossed it stays fixed!! but otherwise my weekend was really fun, i went out to a party with some friends and now it's the last full week of work before the holidays :D hope you had a great weekend too!!
i think you're right abt that japanese album being released right before a korean one.. and since it was during covid times they really didn't get a chance to go to japan to promote it :'( a shame truly!! and YEA that makes sense.. i wish i could listen to so many of their songs for the first time again!!
minhyuk literally pulls off every hair color sooo well i like when it's blonde-brown too!! and it looks like he's back to black hair for now but it would be kinda fun if we got a new color for comeback promotions, i'd looove to see him with grey or something like that 👀 also comeback is coming!! i'm so excited like we kinda knew it was coming but also i'm like ?!!? comeback!!!!
favorite minhyuk parts omg. that is definitely a harder question and i know i'm gonna leave so many out but here are some ones that i vividly remember pooping myself a little the first time i heard them, gonna put them under a readmore bc this ended up rly long
this one is short but his 'come ooOOooOoooOOON' in rush hour
no reason.. any of his parts literally. wonho was so great at giving him parts that suited him and i loove how his high notes sound in this song
kiss or death there's this one bridge before the final choruses and his voice just sounds so angelic i don't know how to describe. 2:32
it aint over before the last chorus where he IT AINT OVER TIL ITS OVERRRRR i mean i know that line is in the lyrics a lot but he BELTS it out right before the last chorus and it actually stopped me in my tracks when i was listening to mx on shuffle a few weeks ago. stole the whole song
by my side minhyuk opening this song was sooo iconic
if only.. again wonho was sooo good at writing parts that suited minhyuk's higher notes (imo) the whole song he sounds rly good
honorable mention it wasn't even his part originally but that live performance of U R you know the one.. when minhyuk belts that chorus... bro
second honorable mention to his king of masked singer performances because everytime i listen to them i feel insane like how are people not banging down his door begging him to sing their ballad OSTs......
i'd love to hear if you have any specific favs too!!

#1, 3, 5, 7 and 9? and any you expected in your top 10 but arent there :D
:D :D :D :D
BECAUSE I'M SUPER PREDICTABLE they're all zhou shen songs asdfASDFASD
i can't help rambling a lot, sorry in advance ;;
1. 《归处》 (guichu) "place of belonging": this one taking #1 did not surprise me at all LOL i've looped it so many times, i just find it so atmospheric and floaty and spellbinding
3. 《触不可及》 (chu bu ke ji) “untouchable": also not surprising in the least—for a long time this would always be the first song i played before putting everything on shuffle. i always loved playing it walking down the street, feeling all 潇洒 (xiaosa, natural and unrestrained), feeling like yeah life is really good actually. (and now there's an upgraded version from the mid-autumn festival in which he adds all these insane harmonies?? hhhhHHHHH)
5. 《落花》 (luohua) "fallen petals": one of zs' more obscure osts, i actually didn't even know it existed until i saw it on spotify haha (in my defense he has a LOT of songs), but it's really ethereal and pretty
7. 《荒城渡》 (huang cheng du), xue yang's theme: best soundtrack in cql 😩
9. 《江湖觅知音》 (jianghu mi zhiyin) "seeking a bosom friend in jiang-hu": THIS SONG MAKES ME GO FERAL, IT'S LITERALLY EDM + CHINESE OPERA, AND IT USES ERHU THE MOST FERAL INSTRUMENT! I LOVE IT SO MUCH I'M SURPRISED ITS NOT HIGHER THAN #9 (and also i find it so hilarious that the musician who wrote this song was literally like "i had so much fun with our collab, i didn't have to worry about how hard the song would be for the singer at all!! if i knew he would handle it so flawlessly i would've made it even harder :V")
spotify has a relatively small fraction of zhou shen's discography, so there are actually a lot of other songs that would be on the top 10 if it weren't for that HAHAHA, including:
《若梦》 (ruo meng) “dream-like”: i loop this one SO MUCH it'd probably be in the top 5, the emotional build up at the end gets me everytime
《鲁冰花》 (lu bing hua) “the dull-ice flower”: cue anyone who’s familiar with chinese music to be like wait seriously?? lu bing hua??? YES SERIOUSLY he uses lala hsu’s gorgeous arrangement from Singer 2016 for this cover and with his incredible storytelling-esque vocals, it’s just SO GOOD, i loop it non-stop ;;
《光亮》 (guangliang) “silver linings”: this just came out this november so spotify didn’t count it, but i’ve already listened to it a ridiculous amount of times; the beijing opera at the climax has been the only thing circulating in my head these past few weeks
all of his duets with hacken lee from 我们的歌 (wo men de ge, a variety show): i could scream about them forever oh my g o d two vocal gods with god-tier harmonization skills, no matter how many times i listen to their duets, the jaw-dropping, heart-swooping feeling never goes away. some faves here, here, and here
and just so that it’s not entirely zhou shen, i also looped mimi lee and chris wong's 《傻女》 “foolish girl” and 《晚秋》 “late autumn” duets a lot, also from 我们的歌; they were so underrated in the show because apart from these two songs, they got stuck with not the greatest song selections ;;

hi! i've just come across your blog, and wanted to ask if you could give me music recomendations? i see you like rock like led zeppelin and metallica and similar stuff. i don't listen to this kinda music at all but i'm curious so could you reccomend me where to start? what are some good bands or albums as a starting point. sorry if this is a weird request!
HELLO 💗 I guess it sort of depends what rock you're into currently or what you've heard and want to hear more of? Technically I think the first Led Zeppelin album I heard was Houses of the Holy but that's not actually a favorite of mine; I honestly think with LZ, starting from the beginning is the way to go.
Honestly when I'm exploring a new artist, I either put all their songs on shuffle or start from the very beginning of their discography. I'm bound to find something I like and if they capture my attention long enough, I'm bound to keep going with them. Beyond that, I'll toss out some albums I really like that are all in the rock range from those decades:
Led Zeppelin (1969) - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin II (1970) - Led Zeppelin
Honestly all LZ is good LZ lol, I really think starting from the beginning is the way to go. They start to lose me after Physical Graffiti
Master of Puppets (1986) - Metallica
The Black Album (1991) - Metallica
Load (1996) - Metallica
I pretty much like everything Metallica does through like, the year 2000. A lot of fans will tell you the Black Album was them "selling out" though personally I 1) think that's baloney and 2) think they have some of their best lyrics on that album
So Far, So Good...So What! (1988) - Megadeth
Rust In Peace (1990) - Megadeth
Countdown to Extinction (1992) - Megadeth
It took me a little while to warm up to Megadeth because of Dave's unique vocals but wow, they are so cool. Love the intensity, love the grittiness of their music. I'm truly obsessed with these dudes (especially David, the bassist, he is ADORABLE and goes so hard).
Bloody Kisses (1993) - Type O Negative
October Rust (1996) - Type O Negative
Life Is Killing Me (2003) - Type O Negative
Type O Negative are gothic metal, fronted by the remarkable Peter Steele. Get ready to get turned on. Seriously, some of their lyrics are just 👀
Paranoid (1970) - Black Sabbath
Master of Reality (1971) - Black Sabbath
Truly a classic band, who doesn't like some Black Sabbath? I used to listen to Master of Reality incessantly like 10 years ago.
High 'N' Dry (1981) - Def Leppard
Pyromania (1983) - Def Leppard
Hysteria (1987) - Def Leppard
You truly havent lived until you've jammed out to Hysteria. That album is incredible and DL was literally THE band that got me through months of depression and panic attacks this past spring. I love them so much. Check out their live "In The Round" performances sometime.
I really hope this helps! I hope you find something you like and please feel free to come back to tell me about it 💗💕

If I'm doing all the music asks, so are you. I CHALLENGE THEE.
It has been a calendar year since you sent me this.  SORRY.  You know I’ve been busy.  @groovyaviator also asked me Daft Punk, Fall Out Boy, and Led Zeppelin.  Let’s do this.
- Alabama Shakes: Favorite female lead? Aurora.
- Arctic Monkeys: Favorite male lead? Chris Martin.
- Ben Howard: An album that reminds you of your favorite season? Aurora’s All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend, because it reminds me of when of that moment in late October when you realize winter is on its way.  But I’m also a fan of our weather right now, so for that I would assign Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto.  And I’ve also come to favor the weather around my birthday midsummer, and for that I’d assign The Golden Age by Woodkid.
- Bon Iver: An album you could listen to on repeat for years? Coldplay’s X&Y. Regina Spektor’s Far, as well as What We Saw from the Cheap Seats.  alt-J’s entire discography. The How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack by John Powell.  The soundtrack to Jane Eyre by Dario Marianelli.  The Golden Age by Woodkid.
- Bastille: A song that brings back bad memories? Already Over by Red.  Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood.  The Ballad of John Hurt by alt-J, but the memory is more bittersweet than bad.  Yes by Coldplay, tied closely with Two Birds by Regina Spektor.
- The Beatles: An artist you think is overrated? Ed Sheeran.
- Coldplay: A band you used to love but never listen to anymore? Coldplay, right now!  I still love them very much but I’ve been listening to a lot of other stuff.  Also, Linkin Park, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence… I went through a phase.
- Daft Punk: Favorite instrumental (no vocals) song? The Heart Asks Pleasure First by Michael Nyman.  It also is my favorite song, but specifically the composer’s cut version.
- Dawes: A genre of music you absolutely cannot stand? I really have a hard time with country.  I’m sorry, Becca.
- Electric Light Orchestra: Favorite song to help you cheer up? I have a 75 song playlist of these, my dude.  Rasputin by Boney M. reminds me of a ridiculous time in high school and never fails to make me smile, but most of the time my go-to is Everything’s Not Lost by Coldplay.
- Elliot Smith: Favorite song to listen to when you’re sad? I tend not to listen to a lot of music when I’m sad… but maybe the cover of Where Is My Mind by Bandit.
- Evanesence: Ever done drugs and listened to music? Lol no.
- Fun.: Put your music on shuffle and list the first three. Whatever happens, I blame Spotify: 1) Dust by Hans Zimmer (Interstellar soundtrack), 2) The Kill Ring by John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack), 3) Daddy Issues by The Neighbourhood.  I only can recall listening to the middle one because I have a habit of saving albums to listen to later.
- Fall Out Boy: First album you fell in love with? Vocal: Linkin Park’s Meteora. Instrumental: John Williams’s soundtrack for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
- Green Day: A song that makes you feel rebellious? Boss Ass Bitch by PTAF!
- George Ezra: A song that reminds you of a past lover? I don’t really have any of those, but you can refer to the bad memory response because it’s basically the same list.
- Genesis: A band that your parents always played when you were little? The Rolling Stones, because if it’s parents plural my dad is the automatic DJ and he plays classic rock exclusively.
- Hozier: Favorite brand new artist? How new is new?  Brand new to me right now are Tom Odell and Glass Animals but both have been at it since 2012.
- Iron & Wine?: What song would you want to be played at your wedding?“ Sleeping At Last did a cover of The Proclaimer’s I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) that I absolutely fucking love.  But I would rather do an upbeat surprise choreographed dance number for my first dance because I don’t know how I feel about sharing an intimate moment with my new spouse in front of all those people.
- Imagine Dragons: What song would you want played at your funeral? At the beginning?  Talk by Coldplay.  At the end, The Heart Asks Pleasure First by Michael Nyman.
- Jack Johnson: A song you heard in a movie and fell in love with? Hans Zimmer’s song Time off of the Inception soundtrack.
- Joy Division: Your least favorite album by your favorite band? Ghost Stories by Coldplay because it’s sad and boring.  Probably also their newest album but I’ve refused to sit through all of it so I don’t know.
- The Killers: Name your top three songs of all time. So many repeating answers tonight! The Heart Asks Pleasure First by Michael Nyman; Talk by Coldplay; Aurora’s cover of Nature Boy.
- Linkin Park: Suggest a band you think I might like. @beccathevampyreslayer I think you’d really enjoy How to be a Human Being by Glass Animals because it’s equal parts dark and upbeat. @groovyaviator, listen to The Golden Age by Woodkid.  Becca can tell you that I’ve loved that album for years because the artist is also a director and intentionally writes his music to make listeners feel like the hero of a film.
- Led Zeppelin: Favorite album art? HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME CHOOSE.  The Golden Age by Woodkid.  Literally any art featured on an album or EP for Sleeping At Last.  The Resistance by Muse.  Any artwork featured in EPs or albums by Fleet Foxes.  Light & Gold by Eric Whitacre (if one is looking to buy a print for me I’d go with this one).  Parachutes by Coldplay.  The Lateness Of The Hour by Alex Clare.  Anything used by Foster The People.
- Muse: Craziest music video you’ve ever seen? Nothing will ever beat the Turn Down For What music video.
- Mumford & Sons: Favorite cover version of a song you love? Any iteration of Nature Boy by Nat King Cole but especially Aurora’s version.  The same can probably also be said for The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel, but nothing beats the original.
- The National: A song you sing in the shower? (I Won’t Say) I’m in Love from Hercules!
- Nathaniel Rateliff: A song that never fails to make you emotional? Laughing With by Regina Spektor has like a 50% chance of making me cry, as does Coming Back Around off the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack.
- One Direction: Backstreet Boys or NSYNC? I liked both!  I think when I was younger I favored NSYNC, but boy bands aren’t really my mode of choice for experiencing ‘90s nostalgia.
- Pink Floyd: You can go back in time to see any band you want. Who would it be? Coldplay when they were touring for X&Y.  Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite as its debut.
- Queen: You can meet any band member, living or dead, and hang out with them for 24 hours. Who would it be? Eric Whitacre, who I have met before but definitely didn’t hang out with.  He’s a hero of mine because he kind of walked into his hometown university, picked up music super late, and went on to redefine classical music.  He was driven by passion, and his lack of early training really shows in the innovation in his work - the man draws PICTURES of his music before even trying to write down notes.  And he collaborates with all manner of interesting people, pulling source material from really unconventional places.  I’ve been contemplating a major change in life paths for the last year or so and it’s always very heartening to see someone do the same, and especially by sheer force of will.
- Radiohead: Favorite concert you’ve ever been to (or a band you want to see live). I saw Aurora live in November and she changed my life.  Marina and the Diamonds was incredible and so was her opening act, Christine and the Queens, who I also love.  Regina Spektor was so good live too.  And seeing Ke$ha last fall was just a lot of fun.  I regret not going to see Coldplay a lot sooner because I’d love to see them in general but I don’t like most of their newest music and I’d really rather hear stuff from Mylo Xyloto and earlier.
- Rihanna: A musician you respect, even if you might not like their music? I don’t really listen to Demi Lovato but I have mad respect for everything she advocates for.
- Roo Panes: Favorite acoustic version of a song? Aurora’s acoustic version of Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1).  It’s haunting.
- Simon & Garfunkel: Favorite album movie? (Ex. Yellow Submarine, The Wall, Help!, The Graduate) Kill me later but I don’t think I have ever seen one in its entirety.  I think I watched Help! with Becca, though.
- Skrillex: What’s the strangest song you have on your iPod right now? Rasputin by Boney M. and Chaccaron Maccaron by El Mundo.
- Tame Impala: A band none of your friends listen to? Aurora, Christine and the Queens, Tom Odell.  Becca introduced me to the last one but she doesn’t listen to his discography actively.
- Taylor Swift: Name that one artist that literally makes you so angry you’re willing to throw the damn radio right out the window to make it stop. I’ll never be over the travesty of Robin Thicke.  One of my favorite members of being a community advisor was our end of the year celebratory dinner, when the DJ started this song and the whole room stopped dancing and stared and him and I called over, “Please just change the song.”  Rape culture is bad, kids.
- U2: A song or album that somehow got onto your iPod but you have no idea where it came from??? Weird. Probably some random movie soundtrack.
- The Vaccines: What are your favorite lyrics? Quote them for me. Do they mean something special to you? “Are you lost or incomplete? Do you feel like a puzzle, you can’t your missing piece?” “Are you what you want to be?” “Is this the life you’ve been waiting for?” “Good is better than perfect, scrub ‘til your fingers are bleeding.  And I’m crying for things that I tell others to do without crying.” “I want to love you but I don’t know how.” “Are you getting stronger or is time shifting weight?” “Potentially lovely, perpetually human, suspended and open…” “You can’t pin me down!”  You might sense a theme here.  I think I do.
- Vampire Weekend: A band or artist you follow on Twitter? No Twitter for me, but if I did it’d be Eric Whitacre because his fans send him good music memes and he shares the best of them.
- Vance Joy: An artist where you can never tell what the hell they’re singing? Chevelle and George Ezra.
- Weezer: Favorite old school band? Simon & Garfunkel.
- The xx: A genre/band you’ve been getting into that you never thought you would enjoy? Synthpop.
