Tell Me That You Love Me (even if it’s fake) by @whitewalkers [luuuuuv me a fandom as ripe with fake dating trope as kp, it never quite loses it’s charm innit. kinn has a high school reunion to attend, and of course why not use it as a ploy to sway his most annoying bodyguard into confessing his nascent feelings... well-done, tis a rec]

Vigilante/Special Agent AU

Deep Like a Coastal Shelf by @Lilla_Torg [aight so this is an author with the very distinguished storytelling pattern, that i can not help but appreciate, their world-building and characterization is usually top notch, and this particular babie is not an exception: porsche and chay were brought up by someone from the syndicate that targets organized crime, and now that people, who used to call themselves their parents, are gone, Porsche is left with the ominous List, and a black leather vigilante suit, to keep their legacy alive. korn and gun are dead, Main and Minor fams are combined, tankhun has taken over as the Leader. kinn handles their overseas ops. amazing quality of storytelling, as always. DNI if you can’t handle pairings other than kp, as this is a multi-pairing piece, as it is customary for this author. but again, the story is so good, i didn’t even skip kimchay/vegaspete bits, which is a feat on it’s own. max kudosssssss]

the house don’t fall (when the bones are good) by @bytheriveriwept [i often say that i luved some works, but there are works i luved, and then there are works i LUVVEEEEEEDDDDDDDD with my whole-ass heart, this bit of genius masterpiece is the case of the latter. kp are special agents, colleagues, parts of the same organization, cohesive unit, and all that. only until porsche decides to take on risqué assignment, and go undercover. will they still be them, when he is back....? what can i say, this was sooooooooo up my alley in so many ways, i don’t even wanna say no more, if you haven’t read this.... what the hell is you even doing]

stumbling to the edge by @FireRisingOverTheHills [absolutely delightful and underrated series for those who is not looking for heavy feels: it is light-hearted, sweet, well-written and entertaining, all without being angsty or plot-twist-heavy. despite the alternative meeting, it is still pretty much in-universe compliant. kp meet at a bar under different circumstances, but end up pretty much in the same compromising position that we all love to see them in. much kudos🙏]

the less i know the better by @mslunita [yummmmm, delicious morsel of tinder hookup-turned-softness, i really enjoyed this one: kp initially meet on the apps, and yet, being themselves, immediately turn this motha all soppy and lovey-dovey, - extremely canon-complaint, if you ask me. exactly the kinda content i am here for🙏 super-well done]

For Want of Fighting by @Mara [this fandom sure does luuuuuuv it some alternative meetings aus, huh, and i ain’t about to complain. great short piece, Businessman AU, first meeting is not too drastically different to canon, but the context does slightly differ. very entertaining and def a rec]

Love and the Art of War by @fortunehasgivenup [oooooowwwwww yassss, this is sooooo far up my alley it ain’t even funny. first of all, this author is everything, man, love all their fics, must reads, all of them. this specific babie is sooooo precious though: set in some nebulous middle ages, it’s a war camp setting, kinn has been away from home for months, and upon returning from some battle or other, gets an unexpected visitor waiting for him inside his tent. ngl, i would have read 200k of this, but author gave me 4, and i lapped them up like a man starved. perfection, truly. not to mention the use of “anakinn” in any context just does it for me🤷‍♀️]

1. But Red is Mine by @bitacrytic. Boy oh boy am I feral for this soul mate fic. It's canon complaint which just makes the angst even more delicious ooohhh Vegas Vegas Vegas.. It's like he's cutting the very branch he is sitting on and we can all only shake our heads at him. Chapters published - 5/?

2. When a monster is not a monster? (Oh, when you love it) . 4/6 chapter have been published and ooohhh I'm loving it. Porsche can sense that something is wrong with Pete (I don't know if the show will add such scenes, but I hope they do) and he tries to help... and makes things worse lmaaooo 😂😂😂

Now for some completed fics.

1. Like fire, we burn . One shot. Ohohoho this fic oohhh this fic! It's part of the Dark!Pete series, but I've read only this one. There's jealousy SO MUCH jealousy and lovely consequences (implied sexy times hehe) 😏

2. Who do you belong to? One shot. Tankhun and Vegas fighting over Pete. MY HEART AHSJSJDJDJ god Vegas is a jerk in this one, but very clear about his priorities and Tankhun is protective as fuck. Ending part of the fic is sexy times galore.

3. Devil Inside (I'm sharing this for everyone wondering which fic anon is talking about). I LOVE IT SO MUCH OH MY GOOOOODDDDD IT'S EVERYTHING! VEGASPETE ARE JUST KILLING ME IN THIS ONE!

4. Whiskey Sour by @cardamonns . One shot. Vegas and Kinn attend a meeting while Pete and Porsche enjoy a drink at the bar. Chaos ensues. Enjoooyyyy

5. the one ice cream place in my town who still gives you free whipped cream and toppings. the backbone of our economy.

can i just say something about kp 1x11? like i loved the epi as much as the next person, vegaspete nation won, kinnporsche nation won, we all stay winning, but something really upset me and it's that no one remembered big

So, listen. We talk about Vegas giving Pete what he needs when he lets Pete beat the shit out of him in the parking garage in Ep 14, but that’s never entirely worked for me, and I think I’ve finally started getting my hands around why.

You’re going to have a hard time convincing me Vegas is that altruistic at that point. That may be a little bit of what’s going on, but this is a guy who’s already made the ultimate sacrifice of letting Pete go - Vegas tells Pete he’s sorry behind Yok’s bar, but he never asks for Pete to come back to him, he doesn’t ask Pete to forgive him, he doesn’t ask for shit from Pete except (twice) to kill him (btw, how’s that feel on the other side, Pete?). I absolutely don’t want to downplay what Vegas does here, because it’s a lot. And in return, it’s not like Pete then walked away from the main family for Vegas. As far as Vegas knew, Pete was going to go right back to his pre-safehouse life with the main family and without Vegas, pack Vegas up into a little box somewhere and stuff it way way down in the back of his mind, and Vegas would be lucky if he saw Pete in the lineup of main bodyguards at a family function. Or, you know, more likely Vegas would be dead, and Pete would move on, as far as Vegas could tell. The next time Vegas sees Pete after the scene behind Yok’s bar, Pete is back at Kinn’s side. The first time Vegas sees Pete in the minor family’s assault on the main family compound, Pete is covering Kinn, until Kinn’s boyfriend shows up to take over that job. Pete has repeatedly shown Vegas that he’d rather be the main family’s loyal hound than return to Vegas again.

So, I submit that an awful lot of the beatdown in the parking garage is a kid who’s learned that even negative attention is attention (you think he doesn’t know what people say about him?) and who’s willing to let his crush beat the shit out of him because it’s 1) better than being ignored and 2) more proof that Pete feels something about him.

HOW WE FEELING VEGASPETE NATION? Because I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I personally am feeling like I’ve done AN ENTIRE FUCKING KILO of that cocaine from the warehouse in Ep 7.

So, LISTEN. I can kind of see now why they’ve been so stingy about doling out VP material, because if they did, it would have immediately eclipsed the actual Kinn and Porsche material. If this is the electricity Build and Bible generate on-screen (no pun intended) when Vegas and Pete are at loggerheads, I cannot even imagine what their sex scene is going to be like. I am going to need some supplemental oxygen.

Although, let’s be honest. Pete dominated this scene. Build owns it. I don’t know if Bible consciously stepped back or if Build is actually just this fucking magnetic when they let him off the leash, but I literally couldn’t take my eyes off of him. I kept forgetting to look at Bible – at Bible – because I couldn’t look away from Build and his perfect beautiful feral face. His smile when Vegas accuses Pete of foiling his plan, Pete’s so pleased with himself for outsmarting Vegas. The way he leans forward into what’s happening. And the sheer fucking determination that sets in at 40:00, when Vegas starts sparking his jumper cables at him, the way the smile falls away, but it’s not replaced by fear, OH NO. Wait, let me go dig out a thing I posted during my breakdown of the “consume you” trailer, what was it, oh yeah, when Vegas gets his hand around Pete’s throat: “You think you’ve got the upper hand? Are you sure? Am I reacting like you thought I would? Did you want to see fear? Tough shit, you’re not getting that from me.” AND HERE WE ARE. NO TURNING BACK.

And then Pete’s utter refusal to look away, the way he stares down Vegas from 40:25 to 40:30, I just. I CAN’T. I CANNOT, Y’ALL. I’m fucking feral over this shot, and this is what I’ve been saying since the beginning, for weeks now, and it’s finally happening – you’re gonna lose this one, Vegas, you’re going to lose so completely and utterly and thoroughly, he’s going to get inside your head and inside your skin, and he’s going to crack you open and tear you apart, and then he’s going to stitch you back together, and he’s going to do it all so so so unexpectedly, with his unflinching gaze and his vulnerable wrists and that shroud of grey that he’s got wrapped around him, no villains and no heroes, and it’s going to be the best thing that’s ever happened to you in your miserable life, your entire world is going to be re-made, you’re going to be re-born when you lose this confrontation, the way you’re already losing in this scene, the way he’s dominating what’s going on, naked, defenseless, tied to a post and staring down your paltry little power play.

And Vegas. Oh my god, my dude. You are so angry that it’s making you stupid. It’s like you’ve never met Pete. It’s like he’s never ridden shotgun for you on an op. It’s like he’s never stared you down while you tortured a guy. You’re looking at him, and all you’re seeing is that guy who you freaked out by leaning against his car roof like a working girl offering a BJ, and you’re completely forgetting that Pete is perfectly comfortable with violence. He’d be 100x more freaked out if you tried to kiss him right now, but this? This is the reality he swims in. This is where he fucking shines. Which they’ve actually made literal, because can I also mention how beautifully they filmed this precise shot? The lighting in this scene, the LIGHTING. I don’t have the technical knowledge to know exactly what they’re doing, but they’ve managed the same effect during this staredown that they did with Porsche at the window of Tawan’s room in Ep 9, where it doesn’t even look real, it looks like an anime.

HOW WE FEELING VEGASPETE NATION?

You KNOW what I’m getting ready to talk about. YOU KNOW. Can we talk about that scene? Because it’s HAPPENING, I’ve been waiting for weeks now, keeping the faith for weeks, and it’s finally happening, Pete’s getting inside Vegas’s head and under his skin with his unflinching gaze, his refusal to look away from anything and everything Vegas has exposed in his rage as he beats himself against the bars of his own cage and takes down whoever’s unlucky enough to get in the way of it, and that shroud of grey Pete keeps wrapped around himself, no heroes and no villains, and the radical compassion he manages to hold out in manacled hands to the suffering Beast that has him chained, and I CANNOT DEAL with this in any kind of rational manner, especially when they’re also going to film Build Jakapan looking so ethereally beautiful bathed in golden light as Pete lies there chained to Vegas’s bed while Vegas touches him with gentle hands.

You’re gonna have to give me a minute. I need some deep breaths.

OK. That’s the first thing, though. That’s the first thing. The hands. And it’s not even the bandaging - although I’m not going to lie, my breath started kicking up a little bit there, just like Pete’s started kicking up in the “consume you” trailer when Vegas got a hand around his throat, particularly when that music kept wanting to turn into instrumental Free Fall but not quite making it. But no, FOCUS. What I really want to do right now is to contrast Vegas’s hand on Pete’s face, here, two-thirds of the way through the ep, to his hand on Pete’s face at the beginning of the ep, back in his downstairs torture dungeon at home. Contrast Vegas’s fingers laid against Pete’s jaw now with the way he gripped Pete’s face then, the same way Kun gripped Vegas’s face back then, in that same torture room, both Vegas and Pete already prisoners in the same cell and caught in a grip intended not only to control, but to hurt. Every time Vegas gripped Pete’s face in that first sequence was a point when he was somehow twisting the knife. Now, now – Vegas’s touch on Pete’s face is still intended to control, to hold Pete still so that Vegas can kiss him feed him a pill kiss him - you closed your eyes, Vegas, you closet romantic sap. But it’s a gentled touch, one that reminds me of the way we see Vegas’s hold start to gentle in the “consume you” trailer after he has that moment when he finally (metaphorically) steps back enough to see PETE and not just what his own hands are doing on Pete’s body, when Pete comes into focus as a fully realized person, which then allows Vegas to see Pete’s reaction to the hand around his neck, lolling around and pressing into the hold and getting increasingly breathless - Pete’s reaction to the hold that’s intended to control but doesn’t have to hurt - and it leaves Vegas poleaxed and blinking before shifting his focus so that what he’s doing is no longer just about himself but also about Pete.

Your eyes say you like it.

The piece de resistance in this moment, the motherfucking cherry on top, the thing that might drive me the most feral about it all, is that during the kiss, you can STILL SEE THE MARK OF KUN’S HAND ON VEGAS’S FACE. This scene is blocked so that the side of his face that Kun has smacked is to the camera, and it’s not just the blotch of a bruise – you can see the individual fingermarks that Kun left when he hit him. Kun isn’t even there anymore, and you can still see his grip on Vegas’s face, trying not only to control, but to hurt this son who he sees as worthless and useless, the son he’s locked away inside this prison, away from the world, hidden, in what’s supposed to be solitary confinement, like the Minotaur, like a Beast. Kun is overshadowing EVERYTHING THAT’S HAPPENING HERE, but in contrast to the opening sequence, Vegas is choosing to be gentle, in the face of everything his father has ever done to him.

And significantly, this is all before Pete reaches out and starts breaking him open, picking him apart with his clever fingers, the way he unlocked a pair of handcuffs earlier in the ep. Well, before Pete starts doing it deliberately, at least. We certainly started seeing the first cracks when Vegas realized Pete was hanging unresponsive in those chains. Losing Pete’s attention and focus is anathema to Vegas at this point, and to contextualize that, I think it’s important to remember that Vegas is starving, emotionally speaking. As sad as it is, this captor-captive bond is probably the closest he’s been to anyone other than his own brother in years, and certainly the most honest he’s been with someone. Vegas finally has someone who looks at him, who sees him. Pete doesn’t get to die and take that away.

And then Pete. Pete’s FACE. He’s gobsmacked, and we have to remember that to Pete, we kiss the people we like, and Vegas has just kissed him, after abusing him like a dog and keeping him chained up for days and practically killing him, and then Vegas is going to kiss him, like Vegas has some kind of feelings for him (oh, he’s got some feelings for you, Pete, but even I don’t think he understands them yet, and they’re tangled up in a lot of other bullshit, and anyway, he doesn’t have the emotional toolbox at this point to know how to properly express them, anyway). And then Vegas turns around and tells him that he’s got to suffer until Vegas is satisfied, and is it any wonder that Pete asks him “What happened to you?” Because that clearly is not a question that simply means, what happened before you decided to come in here for our daily torment session, even though Vegas seems to take it that way - it’s a larger “What’s wrong with you and what made you that way?” question. But both questions have the same answer, so Vegas’s response is fair, I guess. We get a shockingly honest exchange here - although I’m not sure why I’m so surprised about it, given that they’ve both seen each other with masks off already, and they both have to be aware of that fact - leading to this exchange:

Vegas: My dad beats me for being a hopeless loser.

Pete: My dad did that, too. Then one day I won.

Vegas: So, he stopped beating you?

Me, internally: Oh. Oh, baby boy.

Me, out loud: Nope, just found another reason to do it.

Pete: No, just found another reason to do it.

Me, still out loud: GDI.

Sometimes I hate being right. (As an aside though, a little bit, I was kind of wondering if Pete might say, “No, then I killed him.” Because I am full well aware that sunshine creates shadows.)

ANYWAY, here’s my main takeaway from Vegas and Pete trauma bonding over shitty dads: I know, I know that a lot of people want to see Pete manipulating Vegas with this, getting Vegas to trust him, Vegas hoist with his own petard, and this is how Pete can trick Vegas, either into letting him go or so that he can escape. It’s also how Pete can hurt Vegas, get back at him for what Vegas has done, even the scales in some way that will satisfy a drive for retribution, to see that Vegas pays for what he’s done to Pete. But once again, I will swear up and down, until the day BOC proves me either wrong or right, that Pete cannot be lying to Vegas – not just about information but about Pete’s own intentions – and neither can he deliberately hurt Vegas, and have the storyline remain narratively and thematically coherent. I think what Pete is offering in this scene is radical compassion, it’s more focused on restorative justice than retributive justice, and it’s a first step on a path aimed at making both of them as whole as they can achieve. (And if that ends up with them completing each other in ways neither of them ever expected, well.)

Pete inscribed "no legacy is so rich as honesty" on his body in blood and ink, and Vegas laughed at him for it, told him there was no such thing as honesty between people. If you make Pete a manipulator, you make him a liar. And you make Vegas – Vegas the manipulator, Vegas the monster, Vegas of the torture chamber – you make that Vegas RIGHT.

Also, I know I've talked repeatedly about Pete breaking Vegas open, and how eager I am to see that, but that's not with the idea of Pete causing malicious or even intentional pain. I look at the way Pete reached out with manacled hands in Ep 11, and I see a guy who, if he's going to make Vegas bleed, isn't going to be doing it to take an eye for an eye, he's going to be making an effort to pull out the cancer that Kun is on Vegas's soul. It may be bloody and brutal and it may hurt. Then again, it may NOT. But either way, it's part of HEALING. Of building, not breaking. If Pete wanted Vegas to hurt, if he wanted him to suffer, all he had to do was keep his mouth shut and allow Vegas to go on with his miserable life believing that Kun was right and Vegas is just a fuckup. Because Pete KNOWS, intimately, the agony Vegas has been going through. All he had to do was say, "Well, I guess he's right. You do suck." But instead, he threw out a lifeline. Pete's not perfect, and no one is more aware of that than him. There are no heroes, there are no villains. He knows this about himself. And so, he also knows this about Vegas, and he's able to extend this shred of grace to Vegas because he's already done the grinding labor of learning to extend it to himself.

So here we are, masks off. Next up, ARMOR OFF. Which leads me to …

Noodles coda: Vegas is so smart, y’all, he’s so fucking smart, and it makes him so quickly adaptable. And we’ve seen him use it to manipulate other people, but now we’re seeing how quickly he can hack himself once he has some of the emotional and psychological tools to do it. In the earlier scene, we see the light bulb go on, immediately, when Pete tells him that Kun doesn’t beat him because Vegas is a fuckup but because Kun is a shitty dad. And then Vegas turns around and immediately integrates this new knowledge into his life and finds a way to operationalize it. The next time Kun smacks him around, he doesn’t come terrorize Pete as a way of trying to deal with his feelings. He does some self-care. He puts on his softest jammies – probably takes a hot shower first – and then comes to Pete for emotional support. I mean, yeah, he’s still supremely fucked-up. He’s coming for emotional support from the guy he’s still got chained up in his makeshift torture dungeon, but baby steps, you know?

So, how we feeling Vegaspete Nation? Because I don’t know about all y’all, but I’m still completely normal about Vegas and Pete and their sex scene and am in no way re-watching it at least half a dozen times a day in a feral fugue state. COMPLETELY NORMAL.

I suspect this can’t be contained in a single post, but for now, here’s just some of the things that make me feral about this scene:

1. The way they make sure to show us the tattoo, to emphasize that message, no legacy is so rich as honesty, right up front, just as they’re getting into it, finally all masks off, all armor off. Oh, Vegas tried to put that mask back on, for sure – they even explicitly mark this with the moment he wipes the tears off his face, like he’s almost literally pulling a mask back on, and you can see him put up his armor just before he looks up at Pete, before he goes on the attack again, in a way that’s always been guaranteed to make Pete cringe away from him before this, when Pete will stand his ground against violence, and it’s maybe his last effort to give Pete the option to escape, this attempt to push him away. But then Pete ends up grabbing him and kissing the mask right back off his face. I feel like maybe you weren’t actually expecting that, Vegas, didn’t think you’d ever get it. After all, everyone and everything leaves you. (Or dies, which. Hm. Are we going to see how fear of Pete’s possible death influences your actions at any upcoming point?)

2. The way Vegas, that motherfucker, always always goes me one better than I expect. Before this aired, if you had asked me what I wanted out of my dream Vegaspete sex scene, two of the key things I would have told you were face-to-face and Vegas going down on Pete. I was just thinking a BJ would be fine and acceptable, and then that motherfucker gets on his knees behind Pete and eats him out so good he has Pete licking his own arm. I can’t. I CANNOT. I shrieked and slapped both hands over my mouth, and they were only getting started.

3. Pete wrapping those chains around his own gorgeous wrists and hanging on for dear life as Vegas eats him out so good he has Pete licking his own arm. Pete, baby. DO NOT let this man get away. Not if his tongue is that talented.

4. Face-to-face. Face-to-face. Watching each other, seeing each other the whole time, just like they’ve been gradually seeing and learning each other in the whole lead-up to this.

5. The whole thing is just stunningly intimate. And I emphasize both those words for a reason. Because it’s almost more intimate than it is sexual – no, you know what? I’m going to actually stake out that ground and make a stand on it. It IS even more intimate than it is sexual. And it continues to – even after watching it literally half a dozen times a day, every day, since it first aired – leave me stunned every time I watch it. And that’s the effect of so many many small choices that add up, like slowing it down, which draws everything out, as well as contributing to a fever-haze that turns up the temperature on it. Like having Vegas, who could so easily continue to stay standing above Pete as he fucks him, instead lying fully down on him, pressing as much of himself as close as he possibly can get, like he can get even closer than being inside Pete, like he can somehow make them merge into one, so that every feeling, sound, scent, taste, is heightened, is not only fully engaged but overwhelming, so that there’s nothing outside the two of them. Like the way Vegas is always either looking at Pete’s face or has his own face tucked into Pete’s neck, keeping his focus narrowed to Pete, so that Pete becomes his entire world. The kisses, my god, the kisses, and how soft they are, and how Vegas kisses Pete repeatedly, and how gd tender he is, and how Pete pushes up into the kisses like he’s savoring them, in comparison to the way he just laid there for the pill.

6. What it must mean to Vegas, when Pete surrenders control to him. He’s just finished telling Pete what a fuckup he is, always second-best, how he can never manage to succeed or do anything right, how everything he touches dies, and Pete looks up at him, no masks, and tells him, I trust you, you’re not incompetent, I believe you can do this, you can take care of me, you can give me what I need - wordlessly, just by handing him that rope. No fucking wonder Vegas kissed Pete’s hands like the most precious thing in the world had just been placed into his own hands. Also, that was a challenge from Pete, and Vegas rose to meet it beautifully.

7. OK, wait, I’m not even done with that moment yet. I have to. Just. Hold on and let me go take a walk around the block for a minute to TRY TO WORK OFF SOME OF THIS MF’ING HIGH so I can try to be coherent … OK, just the pure fucking fact of Pete offering up his wrists to be bound, and then Vegas – that motherfucker once again going me one better than I ever, ever expected – pressing a kiss to Pete’s knuckles not just in pleasure, not just in reassurance, but in WORSHIP. That moment, more than anything else in this scene – although also everything else about Vegas in this scene – confirmed for me that, as I’ve suspected since the discussion @black-flame-rose and I had about his Santa Muerte shrine, Vegas treats actual BDSM activity not only as separate from his torture and wetwork, but as sacred.

8. Meanwhile, can we talk about Build for a minute? Let’s talk about Build for a minute. I don’t know wtf kind of filters and lighting they’re using to film him for this, because sure, he’s an attractive guy, but Pete in this scene, like the pill scene, is almost otherworldly. I really think they’re shooting him differently somehow than they are for run-of-the-mill Pete scenes (I mean, for whatever value of “run-of-the-mill” a regular Pete scene can be). But I also think some of it is actually Build and his acting, something about the way he’s using his face and expressions in moments when Pete is just watching Vegas, or just talking to Vegas, utterly focused on Vegas, alone with Vegas, whether that’s literal or the world has narrowed to just the two of them, like in the face-off scene at the end of Ep 10, when the minor family goons might as well not have even been in the room – when Build is showing us Pete without his mask. And just like the face-off scene at the end of Ep 10, I can’t manage to look away from him here. I have to rewind and re-watch to remind myself to look at Bible – at Bible. And I think that’s at least partially intentional, I do think Pete’s the focus of this scene, they’ve done a lot to make sure our attention is just as focused on him as Vegas’s attention is, lighting Build’s face and putting him in a lot of direct shots, while they keep Bible shaded, or in silhouette, and halfway – or more – out of frame, or the focus of a lot of the off-kilter shots. And that could make Vegas come across as creepy – maybe it’s supposed to come across as sorta creepy? This faceless man in the shadows – if it wasn’t for how attentive and tender and worshipful Vegas is at every single point of this, once Pete kisses him and pulls off that mask, but particularly once Pete offers himself up along with that rope. Every bit of Vegas’s attention is on Pete throughout this scene, constantly checking in – not verbally, but studying his face, his expressions, the way his body moves, the way he responds to the kisses Vegas keeps going back to – god, the kisses, we only kiss people we like, Pete, and you keep chasing his kisses.

9. Also, let me just pull this out as its own special mention: The tiny, momentary look of amazed pleasure Pete gives Vegas specifically at 30:00, as Vegas gets his rhythm going.

10. Anyway, further to a lot of those off-kilter shots - along with the music they chose and the continued use of the obviously theatrical lighting – I mean, even in Vegas’s at-home torture dungeon, they made an attempt at making the lighting look diagetic, but there’s not even a thought of that here in the bedroom at Torture Sex Dungeon South, which heightens the feeling that none of this is real, it is (like, hah, sacred space) a time out of time and a space out of space, its own little bubble where Vegas and Pete have been constructing their own reality, where the normal rules and roles and expectations don’t apply, where they’ve slowly chipped away at all those things until they’re standing figuratively as well as literally (now) naked in front of each other – and now I’ve lost track of what I was saying. What was I even saying? Oh, so these off-kilter shots, the music, the lighting – they give this an even more heightened sense of unreality, of being drunk or drugged, of being stoned off your ass on endorphins, the way Pete obviously is when he’s at the point of licking his own arm, like they’re fucking in the middle of their own private rave or something. Plus, again, they’ve slowed the action down, which also heightens the feeling of unreality – as well as a vague sense of unease that … OK. I’ve seen people refer to these two as a potential Hades/Persephone story, and I don’t know that this maps perfectly, but this scene? Yeah. I’ve done a lot of thinking about Hades and Persephone and the various iterations of their mythos, and one of the key ways I approach their traditional story is as a coming of age story. Ann Suter, in The Narcissus and the Pomegranate, talks about that approach (among others) and points out that everything was set in motion by Persephone reaching out to pluck that flower. And I’ve thought a lot about that as a metaphor for the way, when we’re teenaged girls, we’re so ready to be grown-up, we’re reaching out for it in so many different ways, and that can make us do a lot of things that are daring, and dangerous, and objectively pretty damn dumb, and can get us in way over our heads, into situations that we never expected, new situations that are just as scary as they may be exhilarating, that could turn out badly but that sometimes manage to help us unlock new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us, and this scene captures that feeling - of reaching out for something that you think you want, of falling into something half-unexpected that you think you’re ready for, but where you end up halfway over your head, and it’s scary and dangerous and exhilarating and all you can do is ride it through - better than almost anything I’ve ever seen before.

11. Also re: a lot of the off-kilter shots, I think it’s an interesting way to fuck with traditional expectations of how power works in a situation like this, and the ways that’s usually represented visually - the almost swirling, restless motion of the camera that somehow never feels choppy even with the myriad changing angles captures power flow back and forth. I feel like the last time we see anything approaching a traditional power framing is the point at which Pete is sitting on the bed, looking up at Vegas and giving him the rope, and Vegas is standing above Pete taking it. After that, we naturally get some shots in which he’s on top of Pete, but I feel like most of the more traditional camerawork with Vegas on top of/above Pete takes place during the point where he’s plastered himself to Pete in an attempt to crawl inside him, with the heightened intimacy they build being the overwhelming effect of those shots. By contrast, I feel like they do a LOT of the very off-kilter stuff at the points when Vegas is still standing, and I’m particularly interested in the shots where Vegas would normally look most dominant and potentially threatening, backlit and mainly in silhouette, standing between the spread legs of a reclining, naked, bound Pete as Vegas pushes down his own pants and then again as he puts on the condom. These two shots are the most pronounced off-kilter ones, literally sideways, in a way that ensures that Vegas and Pete are essentially presented horizontally, on the same level. We get a more traditional framing in a third shot as Vegas pushes into Pete, but he’s already leaning over Pete on his way to lying on top of him in that shot, so he’s not standing above him in quite the same way he is in the other two shots in this sequence.

12. Finally, nrgh. The way Vegas’s hands cradle Pete’s face and his arms during this, the way that mirrors the way Pete’s thighs cradle Vegas’s flanks and the way not only the bondage they’ve got Pete in but also the slowed-down motion of the shots turn Vegas’s thrusts into more of a rocking motion, so they’re just rocking together, suspended in their own little cocoon of reality that’s more real than actual reality, with its masks and its roles and its expectations, but also totally separate from actual reality.

I thought they’d killed me before this, but it turns out that was only target practice.

HOW WE FEELING VEGASPETE NATION?

Because can I tell you? CAN I TELL YOU?

It’s like someone cooked up all the rest of the coke in that warehouse from Ep 7 and then shot it straight into my veins. Someone is going to have to come to my house and peel me off the ceiling.

LISTEN. On April 16, close enough to my birthday that it makes no difference, like the universe said, “Here, have something gorgeous to make up for the absolute shitshow of the last two years,” I was scrolling the kinnporsche tag and saw the “consume you” trailer. And I waited patiently. And then on April 21, I saw a biblebuild post, the one with Build’s sly little glance up at Bible in between his adorable little peace signs, and I had an inkling that I might be in trouble. And I waited patiently. And then Pete kicked the shit out of a guy, my beautiful new best beloved exposing that shroud of grey he keeps himself wrapped in and imprinting himself on my brain, and then Vegas got head-butted by Porsche and went home to have an orgasm and a cigarette in his freaky-deaky dungeon, and on May 8, I posted my first defense of Vegas, because I stanned Chris Keller, do you think I’m afraid of Vegas Theerapanyakul? And I WAITED PATIENTLY. And then they released the WDYS MV, with Pete’s vulnerable wrists like a glimpse of a Victorian ankle, which was a personal attack on me personally, and I continued to WAIT PATIENTLY. And then on May 14, I officially planted my Vegaspete Nation flag, and since then, through weeks of Vegaspete manic street preaching, I have kept the faith, and I have kept the faith, and I have kept the faith, and NOW. NOW, after so much giving, I continue to receive.

I CANNOT BELIEVE the payoff they gave me in this episode. From Vegas’s declaration to Porsche - not even three minutes in - when he’s also the softest and most gorgeous he’s ever looked, and therefore still Pete’s Vegas even though Porsche is the one looking at him; to Vegas’s declaration to Pete not just of love but that it would be worth it to die by Pete’s hand and the way he reached out to touch Pete’s face with his own bloody hand to kiss him in the softest iteration of that tableau we’ve seen yet; to Pete walking away from the main family with his bloody wings painted on the back of his shirt because he chose Vegas, lost his wings to fall, willingly, by choice; to Pete’s anguished pleas for Vegas to turn around and see him, the way Vegas has seen him in the past, the way no one else has ever ever seen him; to the way that I knew, I knew never to doubt Pete for an instant in this episode, no matter what his actions were, because of the way the lighting and framing and filters and styling all gave us the extra-gorgeous version of Build that we’ve only ever gotten when we’re looking at Vegas’s Pete, from the very first moment we see Pete in this episode and all the way through to the end, and the way Pete proved that to me by shooting down the person who shot Vegas without thought, without even looking at them, without even caring about who it was, and the way the narrative never pays the slightest bit of attention to who it was, as if to emphasize that no one has any importance to Pete other than Vegas; to the way Vegas - despite Pete being willing to metaphorically put that handcuff back on if that’s what it took to get through to Vegas - the way Vegas was finally finally able to metaphorically unlock it.

I am going to buy an airplane ticket to Thailand ... and y’all gotta understand how much I hate to fly, how absofuckinglutely relieved my partner was when we finally got all the family moved within driving distance so he could STOP worrying that I was gonna be hauled off by TSA and strip-searched for muttering darkly about the 4th Amendment and Security Theater every time we had to fly somewhere for a family visit ... ANYWAY, I’m going to buy an airplane ticket to Thailand, and I’m gonna go kiss everyone at BOC. WITH TONGUE.
