You know, not to be an old grouch (but also to be an old grouch because why not), but there's this trend that's been going around and it's been really bugging me: It's a bunch of animation teeny boppers trying to proclaim that modern cartoons are waaaaaay darker and scarier than the previous generation of cartoons (90's to 2000's) were and that somehow it makes them better.
Prime example of this will be some post or tweet or whatever and it goes like:
"Cartoons today are so much darker! Look how scary this is!"
*insert a gif of some extremely mild clip from Owl House or Amphibia or Gravity Falls or whatever*
And I'm not saying this to disrespect those shows; I've already stated multiple times that while I don't really like those shows, I highly respect them for how they managed to succeed. But posts like that reek of such insecurity. You don't have to justify the modern cartoons you watch today, it's fine. But, and this isn't even subjective opinion, this is just straight up fact: Cartoon shows from the 90's and 2000's had much darker, scarier imagery or sequences.
"But why are you saying it's straight up fact?"
Because the guidelines for cartoons today are gripping them by their fucking nutsacks, that's why. There's so much you can't show or can't deal with, or so much weird visual shit that gets shut down before it makes it into the official cut. I say it to object to the producers and their desires to absolutely neuter some of these shows in what they... well, show.
Gargoyles had a whole episode about gun safety, where Eliza gets shot by Broadway after he finds her gun and starts playing with it. TMNT 2003 had an episode where Baxter Stockman created a new body for himself, that began rejecting the transplant and literally rotting, Batman Beyond had a villain who was mauled by a panther, had his spine broken in 5 places, went through an excruciating surgery that gave him enhanced physical capabilities, and went back and tore the panther that mauled him near in half by the jaws (and also there was Tim Drake's physical and psychological torture by the Joker). All the insane body-horror shit that went on in Invader Zim. Any fucking episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog. And there's much more I could go on about but then we'd lose the point.
Guys, your modern day shows are fine. They're not bad. But they're definitely not "darker or scarier or edgier" than the cartoons of the 90's and 2000's. The showrunners of those shows you like so much constantly talk about how much obstruction they dealt with from the higher-ups, it's not a good idea to be propping up and praising these new "edgy" moments in modern cartoons when they're incredibly sanitary depictions.

With the whole problematic trope (trend?) of having a poc character being made into an animal or given a non human form, do you think future TMNT projects should stop making Stockman into a fly man? I actually liked that they avoided that in MM by having him be the creator of a fly man instead. But he did also get killed off in the first 15(?) minutes
Oh yeah! Rise Baxter got to stay human, and alive/unmutilated! So did Tyler Perry Stockman. But I’m pretty sure they alluded that his fly mutation was gonna happen
What makes the trope problematic is if that character is your ONLY major POC representation in your story, or if you have a habit of constantly doing it with POC lead characters.
You basically have to look at the Trope in context to the characters around the transformed POC and/or the habits of the people making these stories.
Which just goes back to me praising TMNT for mixing it up every single time.

"He had learned so much on these turtles after just a few weeks with them! He had learned that Leonardo was always the first one up and Raphael the last. He had noticed that Michelangelo did all the cooking and while he preferred to make various different kinds of pizza, he was quite adept at making other meals as well (Baxter had found his teriyaki chicken over rice to be most extraordinary). Donatello served not only as their resident inventor but the 'Fix-It' of the household, sometimes to his annoyance. Raphael was usually called in for the manual labor; Baxter remembered distinctly his "If you're calling me to carry ANYTHING else, I'm gonna kick your shell, Donatello!" Leonardo, despite his protests, really did seem to have the role of 'family mom' in that he kept everyone in order and organized and always seemed to have an answer. Master Splinter was head of the house and the others deferred to his judgment but he carried such an air of openness that questions and even rebuttals to ideas were welcomed. Such a well-oiled machine. Before, he had simply regarded them as genetic experiments, freaks even but now, now that he had no bias of fear or Shredder's version to get in the way, he was truly humbled by their friendship. All their efforts. They had no reason to help him, none at all. They would be no worse off than before if they had refused him. In fact, they might have been better off…
Michelangelo cut into his thinking, asking, "So…is this gonna cure Baxter, Donatello?""

Remember fanon stuff for 1987? One of my favorite TMNT fanfics remembers and it outshines canon.

Sticking all my tmnt stuff in one place ok? ok

(taken from earlier post)
Let's talk details--And pants!
I know people don't like putting the turtles in clothes but I like experimenting with ways to display a character's personality with fashion (see all my original works)
Raph gets a rough plaid fabric meant to replicate masculine clothing like a sumo's mawashi, or a Scottish kilt. The boys are teenagers, but I don't see Raph following trends. He does however, have a fanny pack under the fabric.
Mikey wears surfer shorts to reflect his chill personality. His outfit is color blocked, but you can see the smaller details. His shell is probably decorated with stickers or paint-marker streaks.
Leo's pants are meant to resemble harem/modern hakama pants to give him more of a Samurai feel. His armor is also based on Samurai. He has one katana for now. His belt is a nod to the original animated design.
Donnie's shorts are based on techwear. They feature multiple pockets for his gadgets. He's also wearing a friendship bracelet from Mikey.
All the armor pieces are made by Donnie.

Splinter is Hamato Yoshi* in this universe, and he should be around 40 or 50, so I wanted him to look mature but not elderly. The “I Love NY” mug is a relic from his previous life. But the handle has broken off, making it further resemble a traditional Japanese tea cup. Unlike the boys, he doesn't wear pants, because his leg shape isn't as humanoid, but I wanted his design to look like he was wearing a haori/robe and pants.
I'm not used to drawing Anthromorphic animals, but I think he looks ok
*His real name is Yamato Hoshida in this canon to make it sound more common

April O'Neil and Casey Jones designs.
They're both teens in this version.
April O'Neil!
This incarnation would be one third of a NYC based news commentary group. She's still a teenager. After meeting the turtles, she would train with Splinter and be like a 5th member. Her starter weapon would be electric knuckle gloves. Like the others, her gear is made by Donnie.
Casey Jones!
I think he just got moved to the city to keep him out of trouble. However, he decides to become a vigilante. A little less punk, a little more emo. He gets tips on where to go bust heads based on April's channel.
Tumblr media
Let’s get controversial with Venus!
In this continuity, Venus is created by Krang and the foot clan to infiltrate the Turtles’ ranks. The team has mixed reactions to her. As part of her cover, Venus tells Splinter (Yamato Hoshida aka Hamato Yoshi) that she is actually his daughter, Karai. She’s not, but by this point Shredder recognizes their fighting style as belonging to his rival, so he he tells her to use this information.
Her design is less cluttered than the turtles because she was not able to cultivate her own personality the way they were. Her eyes are also slightly different. Depending on how events go Venus would eventually defect and have a new design that reflects her developing personality. The yin/yang keychain is a gift from a bystander she saves while assisting the turtles.
Tumblr media
Continuing TMNT redesigns with Irma!
Irma is one third of a NYC based channel along with April and another classmate. She acts as April’s cameraperson, compiles research with her, and edits their work. In this version, she is also Baxter Stockman’s niece. She has an interest in technology, animation, and comics so she gets along with the turtles well.

While the TMNT movie reboot was a financial success, it was hoped a sequel could address some of its flaws, which it did & didn't.
People complained about Megan Fox as April, so there's less of her this time, allowing the Turtles to be the main characters in their own movie, but Fox seems less enthusiastic in her portrayal as April, perhaps due to the previous criticism.
After rewriting the last movie, during filming to make Shredder Japanese, over objections to William Fincher, the actual Shredder is now the main villain & recast, as he’d have to do more than look intimidating. This is both a pro & a con, as they bear no visible resemblance & the films still hindered by that previous rewrite.
Tonally it's not quite as all over the place. Though with a conscious effort to be less violent, it seems it would have been better avoiding the modern trend of getting a 12 certification & just going for a PG, as there's little here to warrant the higher rating.
There's a lot more fan service this time with Krang, Baxter Stockman & Casey Jones been added & more Turtle Van.
Best of all is the scene stealing Bebop & Rocksteady. "My Man" aside, these two are just having fun when they're around & they nail the characters, even when both human.
It’s a drastic leap for any franchise, however elaborate it is, to introduce aliens into their setting, when previously not present. So if you compare Krang’s 1st appearance in episode 2 of the kids cartoon, to his 1st appearance in the 2nd movie, the cartoon did it better. But it’s still fun to see Krang in live action & even using his robot body to actually fight.
The trailer of the movie & title suggested an Avengers style battle for New York, but instead of ripping off that excellent sequence, they rip of the final battle from the previous movie.
Some say it's the better of the 2 films, some say it's worst. It often feels that just as it starts giving you something good, whether a fight scene or Splinter listening to Lionel Ritchie, it has to stop that moment.

Finally I watched the TMNT Season finale, Owari.
He is still dead…
I wasn´t expecting him to come back but I suddenly remember I was sad about the whole thing.
But hey! He is avenged now!! His badass, fabulous, kids in black did it…
Leo did it.
But anyway, there is a lot I like about this ep, even if the begining was super sad.
For example:
1.For some reason, getting ready montages are always cool
2.Karai is alive and recovering
3.Fishface might be dead (I am like, 80% sure, unless he managed to crawl his way back into the water, he was murdered by Raph)
4.Speaking of which, I suppose this end a rivalry that started back on season one
5.Baxter Stockman is still a fraking loser. So, yeah, thank you, Mikey
6.Donnie calling his little bro “Michel” I liked it but it felt weird, for some reason I feel like only he calls him that.
7.Bebop and Rocksteady´s training hall was so cool and they were as fun as always (I love those two)
8.Tiger claw now comes with accesories! (each sold separatly)
…And he has tiger pets… I think Raph started a trend.
9.And Super Shredder…
OH MY GOD, Super Shredder!!!:
I love how he uses fire to separete the turtles from Casey and April, he was like “I only care about Yoshi´s actual kids, not the ones he just adopted!”
Also the fire theme tides up with his whole revence thingy, it was a call back to the fire that took Tang Shen from them and destroy everything they loved (a thing he is apparently still holding into even after he got his so called revenge).
The whole battle was badass, I really liked how it was chorographed. I knew Donnie would not be the one to kill Shredder, since it was Leo´s journey into become head of the Hamato clan, but I wouldnpt mind if he did; they were all mourning the same father after all.
The sound of Leo´s arm twisting was like “wow… ok”… But he, once again showed he is freaking awesome!!!!!
10.I knew Leo had survived but I think the idea of having his brothers think he was gone was sad enough, imagine if they lose him too, what would have happen next?
11.Splinter is amilig in the sky and now ww wait for season 5

Mirage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comics Volume 1. (Pt.1)
May 1984 - May 89.
21 issues
5 Micro-Series 1985-86
7 Tales Of The TMNT May 1987-August 89
After Kevin Eastman & Peter Lairds debut issue of TMNT became a collectors item in 1984, the follow up issue, would arrive five months later.
While the main villain, Shredder, had been killed off, the Turtles had a new foe to face, in scientist Baxter Stockman, who continuing a trend, would be absent from the Mirage comic for a lengthy period, while been more prominent in the cartoon. His robotic mousers, would cause problems, right up to issue 3. Baxter’s lab assistant, who the Turtles saved, April O’Neil, would obviously have a prominent role.
While the comic would regularly be, bi-monthly, the following year would introduce the micro-series, that expanded upon the Turtles personalities, which up to that point, had barely been indistinguishable. They also introduced regular ally Casey Jones & brought Shredder back in the Leonardo comic, with a cliffhanger that continued in issue 10, April 87, where the Turtles, Splinter & April fled from the attacking Foot Clan. Along with Casey, who helped them escape, they spent issues 11-18, hiding in Massachusetts.
With Eastman & Laird busy with business dealings, on the upcoming Turtles cartoon & its toyline, they didn’t have as much time to work on the expanding Turtles comic. So when the spin off Tales Of The TMNT launched, more artists, inkers & writers joined Mirage Studios, most significantly Jim Lawson.
The ‘Tales’ series would see the debut of the Rat King & Leatherhead, who would return far later in vol.1.
While the Massachusetts arc, initially dealt with the aftermath of the Shredder attack, it would soon follow a trend of one off stories, seemingly forgetting about their troubles with the Foot, until the start of the Return To New York trilogy, from March to May 89 where Shredder makes his 4th & final appearance, before been permanently killed off this time.
