“olfactory memory: referring to the recollection of smells.”
[ID: a three page comic in a limited colour palette of black, white, purple, and yellow:
an unnamed killjoy lights a cigarette with a matchstick, leaving smoke trails. the girl, slightly older than in the music videos, turns to face them and says “hey. ya mind puttin’ that out?” the killjoy raises their eyebrows and replies “sheesh, ya got somethin’ against nic-sticks or what?”
a close-up of the girl’s mouth — she pauses, then says “…nah.” her speech bubble trails off into clouds of smoke, weaving through several objects: a revving motorcycle, a laser gun, bound sticks of dynamite, and, finally, a familiar hand holding a cigarette aloft, clad in a fingerless glove and string of bad luck beads.
purple smoke connects the last page to the previous, drawing the viewer’s eye downwards. on a black background, white text reads: “i just can’t stand the smoke.” the girl’s face is turned away, seemingly emotionless. a single tear drips down her chin. /end ID]

EXCLUSIVE interview with Nate Weaver–director of photography on the “Art Is the Weapon” video
I recently reached out to Nate Weaver (director of photography on the “Art Is The Weapon” video), and he graciously agreed to answer some questions about the filming process. Read on to learn more about the creative process behind the launch of the Danger Days era!
1. Are there any props, characters, or concepts that didn’t make it to the video? I watching a behind-the-scenes video for “Na Na Na” and was surprised to see at least a few things that didn’t make it into the actual video. Was there anything that you guys filmed or discussed that weren’t included in the final cut?
You know, I’m a bad person to ask. I was there, but the place was literally blanketed in all these props and dressing that Jason and Gerard had come up with. All the art was carted out to the set days beforehand, and by the time I got there it looked like the Killjoys had been there for a week. I couldn’t keep track. You have to understand that Gerard was the source of all this stuff…Jason was adding and fleshing out plenty of ideas, but Gerard’s creativity was the source of everything and it was very off-the-cuff and free flowing.
2. One of my favorite scenes from the “Art Is The Weapon” video is Kobra Kid flinching and covering his ears at the sound of a gunshot. How much insight did the cast have into their characters’ personalities? Did they ever suggest certain scenes or details for their characters?
It’s really difficult for me to say, on music videos traditionally directors do not get too involved in “directing” the finer points of an artist (or their character). In a lot of music videos, what band members decide to bring to the screen is very much their decision because that character likely is on display in other ways.
That said, I’m pretty sure I remember the idea of Mikey flinching was Gerard’s idea. All the scenes we shot were pre-determined well in advance, so as far as did Ray, or Frank, or Mike come up with any of the scenes, I can’t say.
3. How and why was the Four Aces set chosen? What made the crew decide that a diner/gas station was the perfect place to introduce the Killjoys? Did you consider any other locations before you started filming?
This was a decision made by Gerard (to my knowledge) relatively early on. If I had to guess, the reasoning was practical. It’s tough to find a small geographic area that can give you a lot of different looks and places to play around in. But it was a fun playground!
4. What kind of steps did the cast and crew take to really “transform” the set, making it look like something from the Danger Days universe and not just a generic diner?
Well, I think one of the keys is knowing that we all knew that it was never supposed to look like a diner necessarily. Or a motel. Jason Fijal had a lot of ground to cover. I would guess that he was busy building gizmos like Dr. Death’s radio console and collecting props for a good week beforehand, if not more. And then at that point, it’s just him looking at a list of scenes we have on the shotlist, and dressing those sets the day before. I remember we had to have a couple discussions about how to turn the motel’s front office into Dr. Death’s radio station. But luckily for us, it was all supposed to be post-apocalyptic, makeshift anyway!
5. What was the creative process like? How did you and Gerard work together to make a video that matched his vision?
It was like holding onto a firehose? But I would mean that in the best way. I mean, I’m glad you asked, because I’ve been lucky enough in my music video career to work with some very incredible, creative people. Gerard though is one of the most freely creative people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet and work with. From the very first meeting, I quickly realized that Gerard had this world very fully realized in his head, and I’d need to hang on and just try to fill the few gaps in his plan with photography and filming approach that fit his vision. Gerard was really the director. And I couldn’t have been more happy than to just help him get all that stuff out of his head and onto the screen. It was fast, it was chaotic, and it was one of the most freely creative shoots I’ve ever been a part of. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
6. What was a typical day at the shoot like? What duties and responsibilities did you have?
(Since mine was only a one day shoot, I have to kind of breeze over the ‘typical’ part.)
I have to comment that there was nothing typical about this shoot…it wasn’t typical because we had so much to shoot in one day, because Gerard was so involved in almost everything, I could go on and on. It was the best kind of not-typical.
A lot of people might think a director is responsible for everything, but really a director is (hopefully), overseeing a lot of talented people and just letting them do their thing and making sure it all meshes to the director’s vision. So if you say Gerard was a director because it was his idea, and he was very interested in certain details of how it was all brought to life, then my job as co-director was doing all the director jobs that he was too busy to do because he was in front of the camera so much. That means breaking rough ideas for scenes into a shotlist, deciding how it was going to be lit, and “gap filling” other creative decisions that needed to be made. Where the camera goes, where the cuts will be, etc.
7. From what you’ve said, it sounds like the schedule was pretty rapid-fire. Do you think it would have turned out differently if the crew had more time, or was the tight schedule the perfect way to squeeze out creative energy?
Well, unfortunately, it’s almost always the case that if you had more time or money there would be improvements. I would have loved for it to be a two-day shoot. But I have to realize that most of those improvements would be to things like lighting, and maybe more coverage on some of the more peripheral concepts Gerard had. But the core of why people seemed to like it as much as they did…all that would have been the same. I doubt it would have been a “better” piece in the fans eyes if we had more time.
And yes, I do think the circumstances of all of it made it a little bit to the screen. It was to be a rapid fire trailer. So if by the end of the day the feeling of “getting things done” came across as urgency on the screen, it all fit together.
8. Finally, are there any fun/interesting stories from the shoot that you could share?
This may already be common knowledge, I don’t know, but when the guys are sitting in the diner eating scavenged food, all the cans were supposed to be vegetarian chili I think. Mikey wasn’t into real chili. But I think what the art department got by accident was either real chili or refried beans? Mikey was genuinely really grossed out by having to eat this stuff, but he barely said a word and at the end of the take was trying to spit it out I think. It was hilarious, but I felt bad he wound up doing something he was so grossed out by! After I called cut he’s like sputtering and trying to get this stuff out and everybody’s laughing.
Before I we finish, I just want to say again how awesome this project was to work on. In making music video, it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes people are difficult, sometimes the conditions are a pain. I was a late MCR fan, I didn’t get “it” until Three Cheers. But going into it, I wasn’t counting on it feeling like a bunch of people getting together and making a short movie for fun, with the added benefit of having some resources to get those fun ideas on screen. It’s so rare to have a great time on a shoot, and then the final product turns out amazing as well. Everybody involved was awesome, and I can’t stress enough how awesomely easy and low-key it was to work with Gerard, Ray, Mike & Frank. It will always be a really fond memory in my life; gratifying beyond words!

Working your way back from the second crime scene to the first had been the plan for the day, keeping your radios on in case you got a call. The rest of truck had no problem with it; although you and Casey were the most invested, you knew the others wanted the same thing as you. To catch whoever was responsible and protect Lily.
Jay was waiting when you arrived, Hailey too. Voight had thankfully spared them, Jay had told you over the phone that they may have to leave at a moments notice depending on how the case they were working with Intelligence went. They’d leave a few unis there though.
Pulling up in the truck you saw just how much damage the fire had done, whatever accelerant this guy was using spread quicker. Kerosene Kelly reckoned, more combustable than flammable, meaning more likely to explode rather than just ignite.
You and Casey took up the front, Jay smiling slightly despite the circumstances at the sight of you in uniform. “Hey, what is it they call you? Candidate?” Jay gave you a slight hug in greeting as you rolled your eyes at his teasing.
“Yeah, yeah, what we got?” You asked, following him inside with Casey to survey the damage. There was police tape everywhere, but it had been cleared by CSI already.
“This is where we found the mom and friend,” Jay told you both, the rest of truck waiting outside. He was pointing in the dining room, three places set up around the table where most of the damage had been done.
“Ignition point?” Casey asked, lingo you knew but would still have to get used to saying. Surveying the scene, all you saw was carnage, fire blasted walls and the charred remains of a nice home. But Casey was seeing something different, as was Jay.
“We had OFI here earlier, you just missed them attending that collision this morning, but they said it was somewhere... here,” Jay gestured near the patio doors, the wall nearest the entrance black, the carpet practically gone as it had spread and you could definitely see why they suspected a combustable accelerant. “Lock was broken on the door, but there are no prints besides those you’d expect.”
“Three places,” you noted, glancing to the table, “Lily was supposed to be in here, you said she was found upstairs?” You didn’t look at Jay as you asked, too busy inspecting the room. Both the men in there with you may have been seasoned at what they did, but you hoped that your fresh eyes and new perspective might spot something the others missed. ‘Hoped’ being the key word.
“Yeah, don’t know why, she’s barely spoken as you know,” Jay answered, “but there was food on the plates.”
“Timer?” You and Casey spoke up at the same time, glancing at each other as Casey grinned your way. Guess you were picking this up quicker than you thought.
Jay looked between you with an unreadable expression before nodding. “Destroyed in the blast, but it was near the patio doors, automatic.”
Casey nodded thoughtfully, looking to you even though you could see the ideas forming behind his eyes. He wanted to see what you thought.
“It was supposed to kill them all,” you said, “for some reason Lily wasn’t at the table, maybe she went to grab something, go to the toilet... maybe her mom saw that she hadn’t washed her hands yet and made her go back upstairs to clean them like our mom always did with you,” you told Jay, who glared at you slightly as Casey chuckled under his breath.
“She’s escaped death twice now,” Casey said, following your eyes to her place at the table, “but why? We already know she must be the target, but how many enemies does a 7 year old have?”
Jay clenched his jaw, clearly wishing he had some kind of answer for you. “We’ve tried every angle we can think of,” Jay said somewhat helplessly.
“What about the charger?” You asked, remembering the car Intelligence had been looking into when you’d arrived at the hospital last night.
“Got a BOLO out, but our best guess is that either the cars been ditched or the plates have been swapped,” he replied, tone laced with frustration.
Casey ran a hand through his hair as he looked around the room, but it was clear to everyone that there was nothing solid here, or even some smoke to follow. So with a sigh Jay signaled for you guys to leave, the next stop was the first fire, where you and Casey had found Lily.
You sat next to Casey on the drive, the rest of truck discussing the case. Even though you tried to listen, you kept zoning out, the dread in your stomach getting worse with every passing second. You had nothing to offer this girl, no idea what was going on, and you hated feeling this useless.
Casey noticed your quite and nudged you with his leg. “You good?” He checked, trying to meet your eyes.
You shrugged and put on your best fake smile, “sure,” you said unconvincingly. But there was no time to challenge you, the truck was pulling up behind Jay’s car at the scene of the first fire.
The door was still taped up, Lily’s mom hadn’t had a chance to properly come back to the house to salvage much before she died. It felt strange being back here, seeing the remains in daylight when last time you’d seen it it had been burning in the night. With a breath you climbed out the truck, Jay saying something to an officer in a squad car on the otherside of the road, positioned there in case anyone tried to enter the house.
“Does Lily have any family?” Casey asked Jay as he joined you both on the front lawn. You were listening, but you found yourself unable to look away from the building, the peeling paint, the burn marks, the destruction...
“Grandparents in New York,” Jay replied, “and an estranged dad in Colorado, they split up a few years back but he’s on his way now, should be here soon.”
You realised that the other two had made it to the front door and strambled to catch up, carefully stepping over the threshold and into the house with them. Memories of smoke and fire came flooding back as you walked, the smell of the ashes making you feel nauseous. You couldn’t explain, you’d been fire at the other fires since this one... mostly. There was something about this one that sent you back to that basement, maybe it was because you’d had a panic attack here, or maybe it was Lily and how you related to her.
Whatever it was, you tried to push it down as Jay walked you around the house. There had been no broken locks in this house, compared to the broken patio lock in the friend’s, and the fire had started up stairs. Sort of.
“It looks like it was poured down,” you realised, staring at the wall below the banister. The others agreed with you, eyes following the burn pattern as it then spread across the floor once it reached the bottom. “So someone came in while the mom was next door, some how managed to get Lily behind the desk, and then poured the kerosene down the wall?”
“Leaving enough time for them to head down the stairs after they lit the match,” Casey added, but you shook your head a little.
“If they’d lit the match from the top, they would have had enough time, but they would have had to leave through the front door then, and most of the fire damage was down stairs,” you said half distantly as you followed the trail.
Casey looked proud, “you’re right, looks like this goes to the back door,” he pointed. This was all well and good, but it wasn’t helpful. Jay suggested you try upstairs next, leading the way.
You got half way up before feeling a little faint, images of your panic attack flashing through your mind as you forced yourself to continue on upstairs. Casey was a head of you too, so he didn’t notice at first, but as soon as you both reached the top he looked back, pausing as he saw the way you gripped the banister at the top.
Thankfully, he didn’t say anything when Jay was there, but you could see the concern on his face, and the seriousness.  It hadn’t exactly been at the top of your to do list recently, but you’d known it was coming. He was still your Captain.
“So this was where you found her, behind the desk?” Jay asked, gesturing towards the open office, where you could clearly see the moved desk inside, the little room behind it visible.
You nodded, still taking a minute to breath and steady yourself while trying to act normal. Jay didn’t notice, but you didn’t blame him, he didn’t know what Casey did.
“Was there anything else in there, anything you might have not thought relevant at the time but might mean something now?” He asked.
“We’ve already been over this,” you said a little too harshly, giving Jay pause, “sorry, just, a little stressed, haven’t been sleeping much recently,” you tried to shrug it off. Jay was about to reply when he phone went off, excusing himself as he headed outside. He’d think you meant because of this case, and while that was true, you didn’t tell him exactly what ‘recently’ meant.
“We haven’t talked about it,” Casey pointed out after Jay was out of earshot, knowing that you knew what he meant. What was there to say? You trusted Casey, and you’d been getting closer since you’d started at the firehouse, you’d probably spent more time with him in the last week than anyone else, but he was still your Captain, and you didn’t want him to think you were unfit for duty.
“Been a little busy,” you shrugged, eyes flicking from his face to the office behind him.
“Y/N...” he struggled to find what to say, “has this happened before? Or, since even?”
You nodded a little, “before yeah, a few times after the fire, but I was fine in the academy I swear, I haven’t been hiding something that would endanger the rest of the house, if it had happened since I promise you I would have told you Matt,” you poured out. It was the truth, and thankfully he believed.
He relaxed a little, clearly afraid of something worse. “Okay, but you need to talk to me Y/N, or... someone, I don’t want you to go through this alone, I’ve been worried about you,” he admitted, the way he said it causing your breath to hitch a little bit.
“Don’t worry, it’s not going to get in the way of the job,” you assured him but he shook his head at that.
“That’s not the way I meant it Y/N-” he began, an expression on his face you didn’t have time to figure out before you were interrupted by your phone.
It was Will. “Hey what’s up?” You answered as Casey cleared his throat, backing up and getting professional again. What had he wanted to say? You’d think about that later, you told yourself, putting the phone on speaker so Casey could hear. It was a fair assumption that it was about Lily.
“Hey Y/N, just thought I should let you know that Lily’s dad has just checked her out the hospital, it was against Nat’s medical advice but she’s technically fit to leave and he said something about her recovering better with family,” he informed you both, you and Casey casting each other confused and slightly concerned looks.
If it seemed off to you both, that’s because it was. Jay came running up the stairs as if on queue. “What’s going on?” Casey asked, taking in the alarm on Jay’s face.
“Lily’s dad Paul arrived on a flight from Colorado about half an hour ago,” Jay said.
“Yeah we know Will has just been telling us-” you started, holding your phone up with Will still on the line to show Jay.
“No, you don’t understand, we didn’t pick it up until he came through, but Adam found a passport under a different name that came from Colorado to Chicago last week and left back last night,” Jay tried to explain, “the ID photo matches Paul’s, and a credit card under the same name bought over half a dozen products containing kerosene from a handful of different stores near both fires.”
Your jaw went slack, shocked as you tried to process the information. “So he went back to Colorado under his fake ID last night, and got a flight out with his real one this morning, so it’d look like he’d been there the entire time?” Casey read your mind, fists tight at his sides.
“An iron clad alibi...” you muttered, “Will, stop them from leaving!” You called over the phone, knowing he’d heard everything Jay had just said. You heard Will run, breathing heavier as he tried to catch up with Paul and Lily, none of the three of you breathing at all as you waited.
He seemed to reach an exit, having a conversation with someone you couldn’t quite make out before running again. The atmosphere changed, it sounded like he was outside. Then he stopped.
“They’ve gone,” he said angrily and Jay swore, “only just though, I ran out to see if I could stop them but they were already driving away, and Jay - I just saw their car, it was a black dodge charger.”
You paled, what were you going to do now?

ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ
“Jae! Wake up! You’re gonna be late!”
With an anguished groan, Jae rolled over in his bed, wondering who in the fucking world decided it would be a good idea to rouse him from his beauty sleep with yelling.
In hindsight, he probably shouldnt’ve stayed up as late as he did to play video games with his roommate. Without your offensively loud wake up call, Jae would be late for all of his morning classes, if not just sleep through the day and wake up in a panic when afternoon came.
“What’re you still doing in bed?” Bursting through Jae’s bedroom door, you see you best friend still wrapped up in his blankets and sheets, unbothered by the possibility of being late for class. “You’re gonna be late.”
“I fully understand the consequences of skipping class and embrace the very real prospect of failing,” Jae deadpanned, observing your frantic state, fresh coffee stains littering the front of your white shirt. “Why’re you wearing your coffee?”
“I bumped into a guy and spilled my coffee,” you explained, annoyance tinting your voice. The guy you had collided with had apologised profusely and offered to buy you another drink. Since you were already running late to wake Jae up, you had to take a rain check, collecting his number in the process. “Now get up.”
While Jae slowly got up, complaining about how unfair life is, you ran this mornings hectic affairs through your mind. The guy you had ran into had quickly texted you asking when you were free. You had decided on this afternoon, the same place you’d gotten your first coffee.
“Y/nnnnnnnn,” Jae called from the kitchen. “I’m out of coffeeeeee.”
“Not my problem you forgot to go shopping,” you responded, pulled out of memory by the whining of your best friend. You almost told Jae you had a date this afternoon, but, recalling the multiple other guys he had scared away, you decided against it. “We can go tomorrow, if you have time.”
“Fineeeeeeee.” With that, you pulled Jae outside to grace his class with his presence, locking the door behind him.
“Have a good day,” you chirped. Jae groaneCd in response. Giggling to yourself, you speed-walked back to your apartment to change shirts and grab your books for this morning’s lecture.
ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ
“Thanks for not being a murderer,” you laugh as Mr. Coffee-Spiller sat down across from you with your new coffee, courtesy of his credit card. “Though, I have to ask, what’s your name?”
“Austin. Ironically, that’s where I’m from. Austin, Texas, baby!” He shot you some finger guns, smiling from ear to ear. “Where are you from?”
“Around here, actually. Cerritos, California.”
“Oh, cool! There’s a guy in one of my classes from there. You might know him, actually.” Oh yeah, sure. You totally know everyone from Cerritos. “Jae? Jae Park?”
“Yeah, actually! We’re friends.”
“Sweet, really!”
“Yeah!”
With that and the standard “what’s your major” talk out of the way, you and Austin had a rather pleasant conversation until your phone started ringing.
Looking at the caller ID you excused yourself. “Excuse me, I have to take this.” Moving towards the bathrooms, you answered the call with a “yo” once inside the security of the single stall washroom.
“What do you want for dinner,” Jae asked from the other end.
“Jae wha-? Why are you ask-? What?” In total confusion as to why your best friend would be calling you while he was supposed to be in class, to ask what you wanted for dinner.
“You said you’d come over for dinner and a movie tonight to make up for waking me up.” Fuck. You forgot.
After rousing him from his slumber and pushing him out the door, you got a text from Jae telling, not asking, you to come over for dinner and a movie. With all the excitement of the morning, your lectures and classwork, and your date with Mr. Coffee-Spiller, Austin, you’d forgotten all about the mandatory hang-out session with Jae. “I’ll have anything but sushi.”
“Pizza?”
“Deal.” (“Jae, aren’t you lactose intolerant?” “Yes, yes I am.”)
Finishing up your call with Jae, you walked back over to where Austin and you had been sitting. “Sorry about that,” you said once you reached him.
“No worries. I actually have to go home right now,” he said, distractedly reading through a text on his phone. “It appears my roommate is locked out of our dorm and has a class in half an hour.”
“Well that’s convenient for me.”
Austin looked at you in surprise and something that looked a little like hurt decorated his face.
Panicking you rushed to explain. “No no no! Not like that! I had an amazing time, but my friend called me and reminded me of some plans we had made a while ago and I didn’t want to just leave ‘cause the would be rude... I didn’t mean to offend you. I actually had fun.”
Austin let out a relieved laugh. “I get it. I had fun, too. Maybe we could do this again sometime? Maybe a proper dinner?”
“I’d like that. Just let me know when, and I’ll clear my schedule.”
“Sound good. See you then!”
With a quick goodbye hug, you and Austin walked out the door and went your separate ways, Austin rushing to let in his roommate and you trying to get to Jae’s on time.
“How’d your date go,” Jae asked from the small kitchenette. “What’s his name?”
“Austin. And it went well. We’re having dinner next time.” From the living room couch you couldn’t see the scowl on your best friend’s face.
“Oh” was all Jae responded with, noncommittal to your statement. With a scowl, he finished putting the snacks in bowls and walked the short distance to the living room. “You ready to par-tay!?”
“We both have classes in the morning. We can’t party and stay up late.”
“Killjoy.” Jae sat down beside you with the snack bowl on his lap.
“But you loooove me,” you teased, snuggling into him, making yourself comfortable.
“I do indeed.”
ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ
“What’re you doing Friday?” You and Jae were sitting on your couch, practically on top of one another.
“I have a date with Austin. Why?”
“I was just wondering when I’d get to spend time with my best friend. Y‘know, without a time limit or her overbearing and controlling boyfriend.”
“Austin is not controlling,” you said, untangling your legs from Jae’s, hurt he would even entertain the thought of your boyfriend trying to have a grip on your social life. He was just a little… protective of you.
“When was the last time you went out with friends.”
“Um, I dunno… maybe-“ Jae cut you off.
“Exactly. You can’t remember.” Jae was beyond pissed off at Austin. The y/n Jae remembers was always down to go out with friends, spend time with him, or do fun, non-Austin involving things. Nowadays, it seemed you had an excuse for every invitation: “oh, Austin and I have plans,” “ I’m not sure my boyfriend would like that,” “sorry I can’t, Austin won’t let me,” and the like.
“I mean-“
“Don’t even try to defend him, y/n,” Jae shouted, standing up from the couch. “He’s controlling where you go and what you do! Fuck, this is the first time in weeks I get to see you without that dickwad around! And I have a time limit!” Jae was getting angrier, hating the fact that he missed your company because of that worthless piece of shit you called “babe” with unrequited love in your eyes. He hated the fact that he never got to see you. Ever. And when he did, it was with Austin and/or a time limit.
“Jae, really,” you started. “You’re being an ass. Austin’s just looking out for me.”
“He’s the ass,” Jae murmurs.
“You’re the one being an ass right now,” you said getting up from the couch. “I don’t see why you hate him so much!”
“Y/n, we’ve been over this a million times! I tell you every single thing that’s wrong with your relationship, and then you dismiss it like it’s nothing. Like it’s not weird to have your boyfriend know where you are at all times. Like it’s not it’s not at all invasive for him to go through your phone and read all your messages. Like it’s not fucking creepy of him to-“
“I think it’s time you leave,” you said forcefully.
The last you saw of Jae was his back, storming out your door.

Can You Feel It? (pt 1/2) [M]
Tumblr media
Summary: Yeo One is your true enemy. He tries to take over your student council duties daily. He’s always flaunting his popularity. He always has something smart ass to say to you or about you. So what happens when you find him tied up in the classroom after hours? You can do anything to him that you want. Revenge might feel great, but who would have the last word?
Warnings: Bondage, orgasm denial, various kinks, exhibitionism, all sorts of lechery. It’s all in good fun, though.
Note: Extremely dirty. I would like to apologize for writing this in advance. OTL Read at your own risk. I know Changgu would never be a jerk like this but wouldn’t it be fun if he was? Also, I know nothing about Student Council so I just made everything up! Hooray!
As I walked into the classroom on Friday morning I saw the usual sight. Changgu hadn’t picked up the materials for today’s class and instead he was sitting at his desk with his friends surrounding him, talking animatedly and laughing. No doubt he was telling fantastic stories about his latest date.
I shoved my way through the throng of overly tall boys who were his friends. “Changgu, did you get the homeroom materials for today?”
Changgu sighed at having his story interrupted. He looked at me dismissively, straightening his tie. “Can’t you do it?”
“Why would I do it? It’s your job, not mine.”
“But I’m busy right now,” he said, having the nerve to give me his stupid aegyo face – the one with the big innocent eyes and puffy baby cheeks. “Can’t you do it?”
He always does this. He expects to get away with everything. He’s always shirking his duties as Vice President simply because he is hot and popular and everyone likes him. If he thinks the same childish act he uses on other girls will work on me, he can think again.
“I have to prepare for the student council meeting. I have things to do right now. So you go do it. Also, I need the agenda for today’s Student Council meeting,” I said, sticking my hand out.
He’d better have done it or I swear to God. The school festival starts next week and I have too many things to do. Not to mention my own VP will be no help at all.
“Uh….” He said, scratching his ear and looking around guiltily.
All his friends began to snicker, knowing that he hadn’t done it and that I would get angry, as I always did.
“Did you not do it? Again?!” I cried. “How hard is it, Changgu?”
“I just got busy last night. I had a date with a very hot girl. I mean you should have seen her. I was just in the middle of telling everyone about it, but then you ruined it,” he told me, frowning dramatically.
“How can you say something like that with a straight face?” I questioned.
“Come on, you’re a straight A student, it’s nothing for you to write up the agenda right quick,” said E Dawn. “Right?”
I stared at him so coldly it made him visibly wither. I pointed a finger to Changgu. “This jerk right here is a straight A student too! And even if he wasn’t, he should do the things he’s responsible for, right?”
Everyone began to sigh and go back to their seats, complaining that I killed the fun and ruined their joy, calling me a killjoy and a warden. Changgu fake coughed into his hand while saying the word “Buzzkill!”
I sighed and put my hands on my hips, waiting, but Changgu still didn’t get up to get the supplies. He just made himself comfy in his seat, stretching out his long legs and then popping some fruit-flavored gum into his mouth. He chewed it loudly while playing with his floppy black hair. All the while I stood there, eyes burning with hatred.
“Seriously, Jia, if you stick with this uptight routine of yours, you’re not gonna have any friends,” he said, casually.
My fists clenched at my side. I wanted to say something but I was furious beyond words. I just let out a tortured scream and left the room.
I stomped down the hall to the teacher’s lounge to find out what materials were on the list for the day. Then I gathered those from the office. The list was huge, but I just wanted to get it done so I lifted the giant stack of books and handouts and scurried back to the classroom.
I was almost through the door when I tripped on my own shoelace and found myself going down. “Whoa,” I blurted out, trying to shift the weight in my arms to correct my balance, but it was too late. “Whoa! Whoa whoa whoa!” I cried, as I fell and everything went sliding across the floor. Including me. The room erupted in laughter.
Thankfully a few of my friends ran over to help me. As I got to my feet I spied Changgu, hiding behind his hands, laughing.
I narrowed my eyes at him and he shut up, glancing away.
“Are you okay?” asked my friend, Chanyeol, who had easily helped me to my feet and was now brushing me off and checking me over for injury.
“Yeah, I’m okay.”
“You need to be more careful. Next time you need to carry this much stuff just come get me, okay?”
“Okay.”
He started to pick up the books. “I’ll hand these out for you. You just sit.”
“Thanks oppa,” I said.
I heard a little scoff and I glanced over to see Changgu sneering in our direction.
I flipped him off and went to my seat to sit and mentally strike the past 5 minutes from my memory forever.
Later that morning I was in the student council office waiting for the others to arrive. All the junior officers filed in a bit early, and as the time came to start the meeting, only Changgu was missing.
“Should we start?” asked the Secretary.
I sighed and tapped my foot, my arms crossed over my chest. “Yes. Let’s just start anyway,” I said. “As you all know, the festival starts next week and in keeping with the season we’ll be having a Halloween theme –“
“Check out my costume!” bellowed Changgu, as he came running into the room. He didn’t even care that I was speaking or that he was late. He was holding up his costume. “I’m gonna be a pirate!”
“No way! That is so cool!” our Treasurer cried. Everyone else leaped up and gathered around Changgu praising his costume, calling it sexy. “Where did you get it?” they asked.
“Heein from the drama club made it for me. She’s great with sewing.”
I rolled my eyes. Of course Heein volunteered to hand sew a whole costume for him. When does Yeo Changgu not get his ass kissed?
Yet the members chattered on excitedly.
“I know! That is so cool! Her work is amazing. I saw it in the school play. She made these french renaissance ball gowns that were incredible! This material is fantastic!” On and on they went.
They then moved on to discussing their own costumes and all of them were chattering about the haunted house when I finally lost patience and banged the gavel extra loud like six times in a row making everyone jump and stare at me with edgy wide-eyed looks.
“Order! Order! This meeting has come to order here!” I cried wildly. “What is wrong with you people? This is not free period! Pull it together for gods sake!”
“Okay okay!” people began to say, scurrying to their seats.
“Please take your seat, Vice President YEO?” I seethed, narrowing my eyes at him and pointing to the vacant seat at my side.
Changgu strolled over and sat, turning in his seat to air kiss at me.
I frowned and shuddered in revulsion. He just laughed and blew bubbles with his gum. Then he propped his feet up on the nearby empty chair.
It was a nightmare. He was so horrible, yet I couldn’t even call him stupid since aside from his aforementioned wonderful grades, he wrote witty and entertaining essays for the school paper weekly, and had beaten me on the college entrance exams just two weeks prior. He was 5 points higher than me, which he never failed to mention. Everything he actually cared about doing he was great at. His Student Council duties just didn’t seem to make the cut.
“As I was saying. The festival – “
“Is gonna be lit!” Changgu crowed, causing everyone to cheer and begin to chatter again.
I sighed and just sat there rubbing my forehead as Changgu proceeded to preside over the meeting however he saw fit. He was making all sorts of plans that were stupid and that we didn’t even have the money for, but he wouldn’t know that because he never checked the budget like he was supposed to.
I just sat there rubbing my nose and praying to every deity that might possibly exist for the strength to resist killing him.
Finally, someone remembered I was there. “So, who is going to oversee the organizing of the booths?” the Secretary asked me.
“That is VP Yeo’s job,” I said.
“Yeah, but about that. I don’t really want to – “ he began.
I turned my head to glare at him; my eyes were like two burning coals. “Just do it!” I growled.
“But why?”
“Because I said so.”
“But I would rather just -”
“I don’t care what you would rather do! Just do what I tell you to do! Do it! Why? Because I am the President and I’m telling you to do it!” I yelled at the top of my lungs.
Everyone fell silent, staring at me like I was some kind of heinous sea monster.
“Fine,” Changgu said, frowning. He sat there with his shoulders low, moping and nibbling on his fingernails.
I couldn’t stand it anymore and just banged the gavel. “Meeting adjourned,” I said.
Changgu got up in a huff and slunk his way out of the room. Everybody else followed, quiet, but shooting me accusing looks.
I tried to just put it all behind me and focus on the things I had to do, but after I packed up and left the room I saw a group of Student Council members in the hallway gathered by the stairs talking. I heard my name come up and as I got near them I heard them badmouthing me.
“She’s so mean.”
“She didn’t have to yell at him. That’s so embarrassing.”
“I know, right? Poor Changgu. He doesn’t deserve that.”
“Changgu is so nice. He’s like so sweet.”
“I know right? He is a total sweetheart. How could she yell at him like that?”
“She probably also kicks puppies.”
“She probably kicks lots of puppies. She looks like a puppy kicker.”
“I wish Changgu was President instead of her.”
“Me too.”
“Me three. I didn’t even vote for her. She’s evil.”
“She’s always trying to show off. It’s like ‘okay, you’re smart, we get it.’”
“Right. There’s more to life than knowing everything.”
One of them saw me walking past and they all dropped their voices and carried on walking, eventually turning down another hall while still shooting me accusing looks until they finally disappeared.
Unbelievable! He has managed to turn everyone in the Student Council against me. The Student Council was mine! They should be my friends, not his! They don’t even know half the stuff this guy does to me, and yet I’m the one they hate? It’s so unfair!
Ugh. I’ll get you for this, Yeo Changgu. I will! If it’s the last thing I ever do!
The most wretched day of my existence had finally wound down to a close and I was looking forward to just going home, after spending some time helping teachers and tutoring some younger students after school in Math. As I left my locker, I saw Pentagon gathering in the hall looking sneaky and giggling. Well, Pentagon minus one douchebag. Then I heard Yeo One yelling from down the hall.
“Yah! What is this?! Guys? Guys, this is not funny! Come back here! You let me out of this! This is not funny! Yah, I don’t have time for this, I have a date later!”
Pentagon just laughed and laughed, then turned to leave.
I cleared my throat alerting them to my presence before they could pass me. “What happened back there?” I asked, nodding towards where Changgu could still be heard mumbling threats.
“Oh Changgu was taking a nap on the desk in the student council office so I tied him up with my mummy costume,” E Dawn said.
I laughed and laughed, So did the rest of Pentagon.
“Do you think he’ll get free?” I asked.
E Dawn shook his head and snickered. “He can’t. I tied both his arms and legs pretty tight,” he said, then cackled with glee. “This is perfect payback for what he did to me last Wednesday. I still have rug burn from that,” he said, rubbing his arm with a frown.
“Guys, I don’t know. Shouldn’t we let him go?” asked Kino. “I’m starting to feel kind of bad now. Everyone’s gone home now. It’s getting creepy in here.”
“That just makes it even better,” giggled Jinho. “Let’s go get food and come back in like a couple hours?”
“Okay!” said Hongsoek “He’ll be really pissed by then.”
With that, they all moved out, headed to get food.
I couldn’t believe they just left, but I was far too curious. I had to go see for myself, so I went down the hall to the Student Council office, where Yeo One had finally gone silent.
When I opened the door, a beautiful sight met my eyes: there lay my enemy, tied up on the desk totally immoblized.
“Oh ho ho ho ho ho!” I squealed in rapturous delight. I got so excited I had to fan my face a little.
Changgu’s brow lowered and he glared at me. “You,” he growled.
“What have we here?” I mocked, sauntering into the room with a smug grin. “Look at you, all tied up and left on my desk like a big old present. All that’s missing is a bow.”
Changgu struggled in his bonds as I approached but he could not get free.
“Look who’s not so powerful now.”
I dropped my bag onto the floor and hopped onto the desk beside him, looking down at him with joy. I laughed. Then I laughed some more. Then I laughed some more.
“Yes, it’s funny. It’s so hilarious. Laugh it up all you like. But just do me a favor and untie me? Get me out of these ropes.”
“Do you a favor? Now why would I do that?” I asked, my eyes never leaving his. “When have you ever done me any favors?”
Changgu couldn’t seem to recall a single instance, but that didn’t stop him from whining and doing some bad aegyo. “Come on, don’t be like that? This desk is really hard. I’m so uncomfortable. Come on? Let me go? Have a heart?”
“Oh don’t you know? I’m the infamous puppy kicking killjoy, I don’t have a heart! There will be no favors for you today. In fact, this seems like a perfect opportunity for me.”
His head cocked to the side. “To do what?”
“Well, to exact my revenge, of course.”
He started looking around for an escape. “Uh…revenge for what?”
“For torturing me daily. You know, I never wanted you as my Vice President. You were voted in due to the popularity you bought with your pretty face and your parents’ money. And who had to suffer for it? Me. Now, it’s my time.”
Changgu went stiff, looking like he was finally catching on to what was about to happen to him.
“What’s wrong? Nervous?” I asked, leaning closer.
“Look, I know that I’ve taken my duties a little too lightly – “
“A little?”
“And I’ve been a bit of a jerk to you….”
“A bit?”
“Okay, a lot! But its only because….”
I waited.
He struggled for words.
I waited.
I started to think he was going to say something unbelievable, like that he liked me or something. As he continued to struggle I leaned closer.
He still didn’t speak, he only chewed on his lower lip looking flustered. “It’s because….” He continued.
I leaned closer, eager now to hear why he’d made my life so unbearable these past months.
He frowned then pouted. “Because I really don’t like you,” he finally said with a devious little smirk. He then snorted a little as he tried to hold in his laughter.
I laughed heartily but rage bubbled up in my chest.
“You’re no fun at all. Seriously, what’s wrong with you?” he giggled.
“Oh my. Okay,” I said, smoothing my hair. “Well, you really don’t know when to quit, do you? Fine. Okay. Let’s play, Changgu.”
Part two is nowhere near done yet but it will come eventually! Hope you enjoyed it so far
