TT: When John delivers the tumor, TT: And I do mean The Tumor, TT: I and I alone will navigate the Furthest Ring. TT: And I will destroy the sun. TT: By which I do mean the GREEN MOTHER FUCKING SUN.
Sounds like a plan.
Just... a plan. It's certainly a plan, and that's all I'm going to say.
TT: And in case it wasn't clear, TT: I won't be coming back.
Fucking what?
...oh, hang on, this is a fakeout, isn't it. It's her Dream Self, isn't it?
...isn't it?
Tumblr media
TG: whoa fuck TG: a suicide mission are you serious TG: no bullshit thats not happening TG: hey look suddenly everything we just talked about was useless because its time to make a plan that doesnt fucking suck TT: Let's not be so dramatic. TT: I was talking about my dream self.
God. Do not scare me like that, Rose.
If you died in the Furthest Ring, I don't think you could be resurrected. There's no Space, so you can't even find the body to prototype.
TG: haha yeah thats fine i guess TG: those fuckers are all kinds of mad expendable
Not really. It's still an extra life, and you only get one freebie. Plus, the dual-bodies thing is actually pretty useful, and Dream Selves have access to magic like flight and shapeshifting.
Also... losing her Dream Self will put Rose in the Bubbles when she sleeps. That's the last thing her psyche needs.
TG: for someone whos saying lets cool it on the drama the whole i wont be coming back thing is a pretty theatrical bombshell TG: for future reference
That was pretty mean, Rose. Were you trying to see if Dave actually cared? Because you should know the answer to that question by now.
TG: so when do i do my thing TG: make this map [...] TT: If there's one thing you have more than any of us, it's time. TT: So, whenever you like. TT: As long as conventionally speaking, it's quite soon. [...] TT: And if you have trouble going to sleep, maybe you can ask your patron troll to trick the telepathic one into putting you to sleep again. TG: what TT: Each of us seems to have a troll infatuated with helping us. Haven't you noticed?
Jade doesn't. The troll she's probably talked the most with is Karkat. He's supposed to calm down later on, but I wouldn't characterize what he's currently doing as 'helping'.
TG: which ones yours TG: is it the absurd juggalo one that would be hilarious
...actually, Gamzee might be sufficiently off-putting to shock Rose out of this ominous mood she's in. I'm willing to give anything a shot, at this point, so bring on the Faygo.

okay I’ve refrained from posting my thoughts on the ted lasso finale until now in the interest of making sure they’re expressed properly so that people understand how correct my opinions actually are. but I’m here and I’m queer and LET’S DO IT FOLKS:
TED LASSO FINALE THOUGHTS
THE GOOD:
Nate!! Nate was a timid, sweet note in this episode. It was such a gentle little reintegration of his character back into the team and seeing him get a secure happy ending after all that time of insecurity was the part of the episode that provided the MOST payoff. Seeing Nick Mohammed’s post about Nate and his family life and understanding how much he put into that character was so beautiful to see too. I adore actors who very publicly (and in a nerdy way) love their craft!
His conversation with Ted also made me cry like I have never cried before.
COLIN KISSED HIS FELLA AFTER A WIN!! Ugh such a beautiful payoff and full circle moment for him, I was truly squealing with joy <3
The team’s rendition of So Long, Farewell had me GIGGLINGGG oh my god, I’m a die hard Sound of Music fan so I loved it! I would have maybe liked a little more emotion from Ted, I felt like his reaction was kind of… meh? meek? but other than that the song itself was FANTASTIC.
Obviously I love that they won the game, duh
They also had a lot of really amazing and thoughtful callbacks in this episode, like Keeley’s parallel to her entrance in the pilot was great, Ted’s bbq sauce mantra, Nate leaping into Ted’s arms, the ussie guy, the winning play being the play from season 1. All of those little moments showed a strong attention to detail I truly loved.
I love that Rupert made HIMSELF unlikeable in the end. Rebecca didn’t need to ruin his life; she stopped caring and soon saw he was doing a perfectly fine job of doing it himself. Karma truly is Rebecca Welton’s boyfriend!! Or is it?
Jake the motherfucking client seducer over here turning out to be a total dud like yesss!! I don’t want Ted and Michele back together by any means but fuck that guy lol, glad to see she and Henry were getting sick of him
BELIEVE. 😭
Which leads me to…
THE BAD:
I know you all know I ship Tedbecca, but this is truly not coming from a shipper standpoint when I say that that first scene of them was absolute BAIT. It was pretty disappointing because I know Ted Lasso’s been prone to red herrings and fakeouts every now and then but I didn’t take it as a show that would truly bait their fans with something like that??
I don’t care if I’m biased, I don’t care if the writers were trying to be avant-garde with their ending for rebecca, I’ll say what I’m about to say a million times: writing off 1 of your 2 most main characters into a happy ending with a man whose name the audience doesn’t even know is literally never a good writing decision. I think this should be obvious.
I have no hate to Boat Guy, Rebecca’s whole thing with him was basically the plot of Before Sunrise + Before Sunset (all hail Richard Lanklater) if someone watched those movies and then tried condensing them into fifteen accumulated minutes of television
Keeley, Roy, Jamie… they did you three so fucking dirty my babes. Keeley you especially. I’m beyond disappointed, bordering on genuinely hurt, by how much they screwed up Keeley and all of her adjacent storylines this season.
I loved RoyKeeley so much in seasons 1 and 2, they had such a sweetness and a magic to them. There were so many elements like that to season 1 and 2 that I feel the writers gave up on in the name of growth or… honestly, at this point, I don’t know why they did this. Roy was a little insecure in seasons 1 and 2, but I never felt like he was needy. It felt so cruel to have shown us RoyKeeley in all of these moments of such stability, such healthiness, and such genuine love for so long and then rip it away for some version of Roy Kent that felt hollow, twisted, and who just Did Not Get It. It makes me so sad.
It makes me sad for Jamie too. Him falling for Keeley again was like the last thing I needed to see from his character. There’s so much else they could have done with him, and instead they took that beautiful moment of him being accountable and respectful with Keeley and the tape, and they turned it into something ugly: they had him weaponize it as a bargaining chip against Roy.
I don’t understand why they thought having our favs engaged in this very sexist outdated convo with such possessive language in the name of comedy was a good idea. I get it was poking fun at them but it was the kind of fun that shouldn’t have to be poked at by now. They’re not these men, I don’t recognize this version of them. It’s such a regression.
speaking of weird and uncomfortable shit being played off for laughs… beard and jane got married! ted wasn’t even there! she shredded his passport to keep him in captivity! how creepy! (see the joke is that they’re crazy and do toxic things to each other. you’re supposed to laugh.)

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 106-107 Subbed (Finalized)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previously: Episode 105 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-106: Judai and Johan of the Gem Beast Deck
A new school term has started at the Duel Academia. Invited to the Academia as transfer students and becoming new friends are the Academy Champions known as Amon, O'Brien, Crocodile, and a mysterious boy--along with one Professor Cobra. Meanwhile, atop the school building rooftop, Judai meets a boy who can see Spirits--who turns out to be the "mysterious boy," Johan. Cobra proposes an Exhibition Match, pitting Judai against Johan. Johan turns out to be a duelist in control of the rare Monsters known as the Gem Beasts.
TURN-107: The Neo-Spacians VS the Gem Beasts
Johan summons one Gem Beast after another, from his Amethyst Cat to his Topaz Tiger. Judai also has Neo-Spacian Flare Scarab and Neos perform a Contact Fusion to take them on with his Flare Neos. Then, Johan destroys Judai's Field Magic and activates a new Field Magic, Ancient City of Rainbows -- Rainbow Ruins, sending his Neo-Spacian back to his deck. Seeing these skillful attacks, Ed begins to speak of the unknown relationship between Johan and his Gem Beasts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...so, didn't mean to let these take about a month and a half since 105 was all finalized, but heremst we be *sips indie coffee*
Season 3 gets into full swing with these two episodes as it starts us off with a hint of our upcoming big bad right off the jump (RIP Hiromi Tsuru, your Yubel is still fantastic), then introduces us to the big foreign players we'll be seeing quite a bit of going forward. Judai has a nightmare taking place in an area similar to his vision with Saiou--which I'm sure is unrelated to anything--and then opening ceremonies ensue before we're introduced properly to our new transfer students, and the Ancient Roman lore around Johan's Gem Beasts which was pretty cool to include; Judai and Johan then have a fun duel together as we see the Gem Beasts in action facing Judai's Neo-Spacians. These episodes also see the debut of some of my favorite OST tracks from Season 3, like Fervent Duel (used really well in 107) and A Pinch here. Ed coming in for 107 and giving us the background on Johan from Pegasus, featuring cameos of Dark Yugi, Kaiba, and Jounouchi (from the Warriors and Unstopping Overflowing Feelings OP/EN in DM--these nods were kept in the dub, so it was the first time those particular shots of Kaiba and Jou were used in the West), as we learn that he gifted the Gem Beasts to Johan during a tournament in Europe was good, and I still love Johan's little fakeout at the end with the Rainbow Dragon he doesn't actually have yet. A fun duo of episodes with a fun, low-stakes duel that we should enjoy while we can.
Quick side-notes for the dub, but want to take a sec to shout out Jim's dub VA who perfectly nailed his Australian voice for the guy, and who I hope comes back if we're ever lucky enough to get a more accurate GX redub (though I think he was recast in DL? But still sounded pretty good). Dub!Yubel, though... I'm still baffled by the decision made with that voice, and I'm glad they eventually went with a better voice in BBT. 107 also saw them make a bunch of--I assume--time cuts, including most of the cold open which featured our first in-series look at Martin, and other shots as Cobra set up his evil lair in the old SAL lab (continuity!), but also the ending shot as Cobra looks at the duel energy he collected and comments on their impressive duel--most of those are fair as far as time cuts go, though I think the ending scene should've been kept. It's also interesting that, with Johan's southern accent being a thing in the dub (which has grown on me, though I like his later no-accent voice more), that they had Pegasus say the tournament he went to with him happened "down south;" according to a comment on the Crunchyroll upload, the venue's the "All-England Lawn Tennis Club where the Grand Slam Wimbledon" happens in the UK? lol
Animation error-wise, there were just over a handful that I picked up on in each episode that I went ahead and fixed up--mostly quality-of-watching ones along with a couple of card errors, and I also translated the bio on Amon that O'Brien hands to Cobra early in episode 106. As always, details below the cut if interested, along with Translation Notes for the bio.
Anywho, enjoy! The next two-parter features our fiery boy O'Brien, and with some really nice art/animation in 109 that I always love to revisit; I'll begin work on that once I finalize some special side work that I should hopefully get to post about soon, too, though I'll also be going back to episode 1 to fix up a card error I forgot to tackle, lol. Stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits! (106)
Early in the episode, Professor Cobra enters O'Brien's room on the ship and asks who else would be visiting him; he hands him a bio pointing to one Amon Garam. As detailed here, I translated Amon's bio in this shot, first compiling a full image to edit from its later appearances in 111 and 121, then keyframing it into the rotating zooming-out shot that happens here with AfterEffects and Sony Vegas. (The full text of the bio is in that detailed post)
In the next shot, Cobra asks if Amon came to see O'Brien, noting that he seems to be a meddler but suggests that he doesn't pay him any mind, turning to pass the bio back to him--as he does so, a few quick animation errors happen: 1) Cobra's face/mouth glitch for a few quick frames as he shifts his face into a smile (likely his current face being left over his moving face behind it); 2) the bio page in his hand jitters a bit in the frames leading up to his turning towards O'Brien; and 3) once O'Brien's holding the paper and moves it down, there are a quick few frames where a small part of his hair (the one bang on his left) is missing before it comes back. As detailed here, I edited in my translation to the bio while Cobra's holding it and as he passes it back, masking in Cobra and the rest of the frame over it for blending, while also fixing those errors for the Japanese scene by holding Cobra's face pre-glitch over the glitched frames, editing the Amon bio so it's steady throughout, and masking in O'Brien's full hair bang over the frames where it's cut short.
Later, as the Judai/Johan duel gets underway, Judai and Johan give their "Duel!" shouts and draw their hands, but a few things happen as they jump into a split-screen for it: 1) Judai moves a frame before Johan starts to slide in on his split; 2) once the screen pans down to their decks as they draw, the split-screen border seems to have been drawn in oddly, as part of Judai's side ends up just on top of the border (also seems to be slightly cut off in width halfway down); and 3) as they split apart, more of Judai seems to have made it to the left of his split's border. I fixed each one in Vegas by first sliding in Johan a frame earlier as Judai moves, then enhancing the split-screen border a bit to cover up what ends up on top of it and to its left as they split out (I generally try to avoid making redone borders that much bigger, but thought it was the only way to cleanly/consistently fix that).
After Johan plays Gem Beast Emerald Turtle, we cut to the Overseas Champions watching on, with Jim whistling before Amon expresses his surprise at the Gem Beasts--but a coloring error happens in the rapid pan from Jim to Amon, with both having odd coloring spots. A quick fix in Vegas by redoing the panning using a frame of Jim post-whistle and a frame of Amon before his mouth moves.
After Judai summons Neos, Johan laments that he can't ask for his autograph while they're dueling, but notes that he was waiting for him to summon a new Monster--Judai slides in on a split-screen to question that, but a few things happen: 1) Johan starts moving to make room for his split a frame before he does so; 2) a coloring error happens as Judai and Johan then split apart before Johan activates Triggered Summon (more noticeable on Johan), and 3) Judai's uneven slide-out leads to it taking a frame longer than Johan's to get offscreen. Fixed each one in Vegas by sliding Judai in a frame earlier as Johan moves, masking in Judai and Johan's pre-slide-out splits over the frames as they slide out to fix the coloring error, and making Judai's slide-out match Johan's by masking one frame in earlier.
[continued below, just split thanks to stupid text-block character limits]
(6) A bit later, after Johan talks about not having any destruction cards in his deck so he can see his opponents going all-out, Judai notes how neat he finds him; as they split apart and Johan tells him to bring out his new Monster (due to Triggered Summon's effect), there's a quick frame where the border is missing on Judai's split. Quick fix in Vegas as I just added it back on by duplicating the one on Johan's and touching it up as needed.
(7) As Judai then summons Neo-Spacian Gran Mole, we see it pop up in front of him, but Judai has black rectangles on his Disk where Gran Mole, Neos, and Aqua Dolphin should be. Fixed using AfterEffects to slap on proxies for each in one frame, which I then took into Sony Vegas and shook around position-wise frame by frame to add it to the full shot (thankfully, this was just shaking around and not zooming in or out lol).
(8) During the preview for 107, we see Judai on a split-screen jumping as Johan declares an attack with his Amethyst Cat, but as they slide apart, two quick things happen: 1) there's a quick frame where there's just black behind them (and Johan's split's border isn't as glowy as Judai's), and 2) some of Johan's split's border hangs on for two frames after he and Judai slide offscreen. Fixed each in Vegas for 107 proper first, then applied the fixes here, masking in Amethyst Cat behind Judai and Johan as they split apart, then masking in some of the whooshing background behind Amethyst Cat to cover up the remaining bit of Johan's split border for those two frames.
Fixes/Edits! (107)
After Judai summons Flare Scarab, he has it do a Contact Fusion with Neos for Flare Neos, but as he declares Flare Scarab's name for it, we see that the cards on his Disk--for Gran Mole, Neos, and Flare Scarab--are flipped upside-down. Fixed in AfterEffects first by applying proxies as Judai swings his Disk around, then on one frame during the zoom-out on Flare Scarab after he moves--I then took the latter frame into Sony Vegas, where I redid the zoomout on it for the whole shot, masking in Flare Scarab on top of it.
After Johan plays Rainbow Ruins and Judai's Battle Phase ends, we see his Disk as Flare Neos returns to his field, but not only are his cards upside-down again--he also has regular ol' Neos where Flare Neos should be. Fixed both in AfterEffects by applying the Mole and Flare Neos proxies correctly, masking in the orb part of Judai's Disk over the Gran Mole one.
A bit after the eyecatch, as Judai realizes that Johan hasn't played his ace yet, he starts to ask about it, startling Johan as he slides into a split-screen with him to ask as much, but Johan starts to move for it a frame early. Fixed in Sony Vegas by sliding Judai in a frame earlier there.
Later, after Johan explains that Ruby Special-Summons itself and the other Gems in his Magic/Trap Zone when placed there (rude of the OCG to remove that part of its effect), we split out of the split-screen there as Ruby's summoned, but the border on Johan's split hangs on for an extra frame. Fixed in Vegas by just masking in part of the whooshing background over it.
A bit later, Johan declares a direct attack with Amethyst Cat, and Judai jumps as their split-screen splits apart to show Amethyst Cat pouncing at him, but as they slide apart, 1) there's a quick frame where there's just black behind them (and Johan's split's border isn't as glowy as Judai's), and 2) some of Johan's split's border hangs on for two frames after he and Judai slide offscreen. As noted for the preview version of this shot in 106's list, I fixed these here first before applying the fix there, masking in Amethyst Cat behind Judai and Johan as they split apart, then masking in some of the whooshing background behind Amethyst Cat to cover up the remaining bit of Johan's split border for those two frames.
Later, after summoning Air Neos (who), Judai slides into a split-screen to explain his ATK-gain-per-LP-difference effect; as they slide apart, Judai's uneven slide-out causes his side to take a frame longer than Johan's to slide offscreen. Fixed in Vegas by just masking part of Judai's slide-out a frame earlier to even up the slide-out.
A bit later, after Johan hypes up Rainbow Dragon only to end in a "just kiddin'," Judai clicks in for a split-screen in confusion before they split apart to show Air Neos's attack connecting with Amber Mammoth--as they split apart, parts of the border on Johan and Judai's splits hang on for an extra frame. I fixed this by just using the touched-up version of this shot from the recap in 108, which had Judai and Johan's splits slide out more naturally.
After the duel, Cobra walks out to congratulate the two on a duel well fought; he beckons them towards him, but as he walks up to the center of the arena to do so, his still feet jitter as Judai and Johan start to walk over. Fixed in Vegas by masking in his feet from the frame as Judai and Johan start to walk over over the 2-3 earlier frames as he gets to the center of the arena to keep it consistent.
so i've assumed for the longest time that 2x7 must take place in march of 2020 because in 2x9 DC, gil refers to march 12th as the night that tom sent greg the "can't make a tomlette" emails, and of course a deleted scene from that episode is the only time we would have ever seen that phrase mentioned otherwise. it also makes complete sense, narratively, to essentially do a little fakeout: "tom, is [the date that you burned the documents] significant to you?" "nope! (feeling confident bc there's no proof of him having done that on that day)" "well that's the day you sent all these batshit emails, and how i know for certain you are well acquainted with greg hirsch." "uh oh"
ntm the fact that it makes a lot of sense as a character choice for tom to specifically send greg that email over and over again on the night that he's kinda trying to punish greg, and where he's probably totally unable to sleep.
anyway, there's a But incoming... i fucking wish there wasn't, but. somehow i've only just now realized that in DC, gil refers to the thanksgiving of 1x5 as "last year." which would indicate that it's still 2019, and therefore the march 12th he's referring to should be a day very close to tom's wedding. and, admittedly... it's not totally out there that tom's initial reason for coining the phrase was because he learned about the Greg The Egg nickname, from shiv having told him after hearing it from caroline. hell, maybe it was when they first started at ATN and it was tom's anxiety spilling out to match greg's Principles.
obviously it's a lot of personal bias that mainly makes me not want this to be the case, like... the sheer amount of fic i've written just confidently using the timeline where a year has passed in the first 7 episodes of season 2, which would be fucked to hell if i accept that DC is in 2019 lol
however..... it IS pretty undeniable that at least a year passes in season 2. do the math: exactly 2 years between the pilot and 4x1. ~5 months pass in s1. 2 and a half weeks pass between 2x9 and 3x5 (according to frank). the rest of s3 takes place - MOST LIKELY - over the course of no more than 4 months. about 3 months pass between s3 and 4, based on knowledge of shiv's pregnancy. and no gaps between seasons otherwise... that's a year left. there HAS to be at least one months-long timeskip somewhere in there. and it's always seemed very plausibly to be between tern haven and argestes, given the notion of pierce "fucking them about." for the longest time i've even specifically imagined argestes as being after the holidays and in january of 2020, partially bc that's convenient for why any notion of logan's 81st bday, the recny ball of 2019, and the holidays are all completely missing. the holidays would also be a good excuse on pierce's end not to rush a deal, and finally, i took into account the weather in that episode.
frankly, i consider the climate heavily when i'm working out the timeline of a show. especially this one. if they wanted to make it plausibly deniable what time of year it was, they'd set the episode indoors. or they'd pick a different part of the world for the roys to visit. and in the season 2 finale, they're on a yacht and explicitly swimming in the mediterranean. it's VERY unlikely that they'd be comfortable hanging around in swim trunks and swimming in those waters if it was any time between october and march. going off of that... if s3 begins in late 2019 as opposed to april/may of 2020, then caroline sent out her wedding invitations no less than 6 months early.
basically it's split between this:
what gil said has more weight. we can assume that the seemingly conflicting weather is a metatextual flub to be ignored. DC is in 2019, the emails were around the time of the wedding, and the huge timeskip containing the holidays is in s3 which also means that caroline sent out her invitations very early
settings and characterizations have more weight. we can assume either that gil misspoke or that it's a metatextual flub to be ignored. DC is in april of 2020, the emails were sent during The Return, and the huge timeskip was in s2 and took the holidays of 2019 with them
So, shall we all congratulate Sah Brockner on working what must be the longest notice period in Holbyverse history? Most characters don't even seem to work one at all.
Putting the jokes aside: I thought Casualty was brilliant tonight. Faith not being in it went some way to making sure of that - I'll savour this moment, I'm sure it won't happen again for months - but it was also just very well-written and well-acted. Also, it had plenty of the social commentary that Casualty needs.
I am going to miss Sah very, very much. I have to say: I am very sad indeed about Sah leaving. I don't think I've been so "I get why they left but I'm also incredibly sad they can't stay forever" about a character since Jade. Sah has been a great character - they've been quiet, sarcastic, a bit socially awkward, sometimes cold but deeply caring when it comes down to it, occasionally stubborn, a fast learner, passionate about what they believe in and willing to stand up for others. (I also interpreted them as autistic.)
Oh, and they happen to be nonbinary.
Casualty has done a lot for trans representation with Sah and for that I will always be tremendously grateful. Has everything about how their character has been handled been perfect? No. I've critiqued things about their portrayal before and those still stand. But, as you can see, I just wrote a whole paragraph describing who Sah is without having to mention that they're nonbinary once - because while it's a significant aspect of who they are, just as something like their mum not being around for them or them being a carer for their dad has been, it's not the only trait Casualty gave them.
There are many, many trans characters out there who may have been well-meaning attempts at representation but are nonetheless tokenistic portrayals with few to no personality traits or stories beyond being trans - which doesn't exactly do anything to change the stereotype that we push our "lifestyles" on everyone all the time, does it? (I think stories about being trans can absolutely be worthwhile, so it's mostly the characters themselves I'm talking about: IMHO, they need more to describe them than just "oh, they're the trans one!" to be good representation.) But Sah was different. I don't know that I'd say Sah was groundbreaking, but they've certainly been meaningful representation to me. For one thing, they've been written in a way that has let them have stories that are about them being trans and stories that have nothing to do with them being trans, which is great.
I'd also like to say that Arin Smethurst's acting as Sah has been great throughout their time on Casualty! It's been very lucky to have them.
I thought how Sah leaving was handled in the story was very well-done too. It was very believeable and didn't feel too sudden or anything like that at all. Their faith in the world and in their profession was so very shaken - I can understand why they would just want to get out after that.
Their last scene was particularly excellent. Obviously, I was jealous when they got a hug from Jacob. Their hugs with Jan and Iain were also so cute. And the silent farewell with Teddy - that just got to me. I've read Sah and Teddy as being in love with one another for a long time now, but even if they weren't romantically in love, there was clearly a very deep love of some kind between them so this last scene was just so sad to see.
Speaking of which, there seems to be a running theme now of characters leaving because they just can't take it anymore. Now I'm wondering if that's how Charlie will leave. I'd think that more impactful if there hadn't been a fakeout version of it quite recently, but oh well.
After all this time, a proper storyline for Jacob! I'm sort of sad that Sah left this week because it means I had to type all that out instead of getting to put Jacob at the top when he finally gets a proper story, lol. He was brilliant tonight, absolutely brilliant. I cannot say enough how much I love him. And we got an allusion - a subtle one, but I thought it spoke volumes - to his trauma. I love it when the writers remember things like that, especially in contexts like this Stevie story where it's definitely needed. As always, Charles Venn was so good!
The story with Habid was, I thought, one of the best patient storylines in a long time. A very emotionally impactful storyline - it made me cry, even - and much-needed social commentary. It's a story I'm glad Casualty told.
Now, as for the rest:
The Max, Jodie, and Stella scenes were very good, as was the scene with Max and Stella alone. Nigel Harman was incredible in that scene between Max and Stella. I'm so sad that Max will be leaving so soon. And I'm sad that his backstory almost certainly won't get to come through properly before he does.
I like that Jodie is unsure of what to do about Max. It feels very realistic.
I keep saying Max is like a neo-Henrik, and once again it was very clear tonight. That scene where he was basically telling Jodie he didn't know what he was doing but he did want the three of them to get to know one another as family - that was so sweet.
I did think the story with the other woman Jodie was treating was a bit boring, but I get why it was there - so that Jodie would think everything with Max over a bit more.
The camerawork in some scenes made me feel somewhat dizzy, but as usual recently, that was probably the point so I don't particularly mind it.
Stevie's characterisation was very interesting. I can't wait to see where this goes for her. Her interactions with Jacob were fascinating, because it made me think back on Jacob last spring, in a somewhat similar situation - both Stevie and Jacob respectively are/have been blaming themselves for something, but Jacob ran from it and switched professions, while Stevie is gripping on as tightly as she can to any sense of control. She was very unlikeable at some points tonight, which is something I wouldn't normally say as a Stevie fan, but I'm sure it's intentional.
I don't like Harry. I can't tell if we're supposed to like him. I hope we're not, because I don't.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm vaguely interested in the Natalia and Iain storyline. It sort of makes sense that she'd feel an unrequited interest in him. I mean, it's cliche if that's where it's going but it also makes sense. I think Natalia wants comfort and a nice, present parental figure more than anything else, but will misinterpret her feelings as romantic. I've had similar moments, so I can relate to that. Seeing how he responds, and when he inevitably has to turn her down, might be interesting. I just want Faith herself to be kept out of it.
So, yes, tonight was great. I have no idea what's meant to be happening next week. I hope Jacob's in it again with another proper storyline.
Thought dump on the Ted Lasso finale below the cut
The Ted/Rebecca fakeouts actually felt kind of mean to me until I realized I was looking at the show from a tumblr perspective and thinking they were picking on shippers vs looking at it from a mainstream audience perspective and realizing they were thumbing their nose at the expectation that Ted and Rebecca would end up together because Ted HAD to have a love interest at the end.
The way Roy and Jamie were talking about Keeley made me cringe hardcore. It felt like a regression, especially when Jamie brought up the video as a gotcha point. I was so glad that Keeley said fuck it and didn’t end up with either of them, even though I was originally rooting for triad.
That made it clearer that the point was that even though they both have grown a lot, they both have a long way to go….and even if they didn’t, growth doesn’t guarantee anything! They could both have become the absolute paragons of perfection and Keeley still wouldn’t have to choose one of them! I think it made sense for Keeley to be single at the end because she’s barely been out of a relationship for more than short periods throughout the show.
Even though I wish Keeley and Rebecca had been endgame, from a watsonian perspective they’re at different points in their lives. Yes, they’re both powerful women, but Keeley has a huge career trajectory in front of her and Rebecca is looking for peace and a family.
I loved the callback to the suggestion box at the beginning of the show, with Nate getting to proudly pass around his even more bedazzled box and Jamie sneaking in extra money with a wink instead of putting in his gum with a sneer.
Rupert sweeping around in his evil coat felt a little over the top, like we could have somehow forgotten that he’s The Villain and they wanted to make sure that we saw him Earn His Comeuppance. Seemed unnecessary.
When they passed the ball off to McAdoo and I was holding my breath trying to figure out how his super powerful corner kick that broke the window was going to be significant, and then he kicked it through the net like something from a sports anime 🥲
Ted’s arc was actually what was most baffling and depressing to me, up until the very end. He looked so subdued for the first half of the episode, and it felt like we were being shown how everyone around him felt about him going but not how he felt? Like, shouldn’t there have been some sign of joy for what was ahead, not just resignation that it was what he had to do? Even the speech in the locker room felt like an attempt to justify the fact that they hadn’t actually given him a future beyond “be in the same country as your son”.
The final diamond dogs meeting helped a lot. We actually got to see Ted being Ted again, plus the full circle of seeing Nate back in the fold plus Trent and Roy added in. Perfect scene 10/10 no notes 🥹
I was going to be so hideously depressed if Ted’s final scene had been him getting out of the taxi and walking with Henry back into his ex-wife’s house. Like what, you’re going to throw away all your autonomy and growth and just be a third wheel to Michelle and Dr. Jake because your son needs you? But the final scene made me feel a lot better, because it felt more like…a real reason. Like look, at the beginning he was running away from a dying marriage and a son he was afraid to fail, and he became a father figure to an entire team, so then he needed to go home and give his own son the coaching he gave those other young men and face his dissolved marriage head on.
And then the elephant in the room, Trent my beloved. I’m not going to blame any of the TedTrenters for being disappointed, but I will say the impression I was given of the laugh police scene by people in the tag was vastly different from my interpretation of the scene. I didn’t see it as Ted shooting Trent down or not liking his enthusiasm at all, it was just a gentle admonishment to not fish for a reaction (and also, like, don’t bug me when I’m concentrating on reading lol) but Ted was looking at him with complete fondness the entire time, he didn’t seem actually bothered by Trent himself; and Trent didn’t seem dampened at all, just a little abashed. I don’t know, I kept seeing it interpreted as Trent’s bid for connection - “I just want you to like it” - being rebuffed in that scene, when to me it is met and returned by Ted’s note on the book- he didn’t just like it, he loved it!
The thing is, people were analyzing everything James Lance was saying about Trent through a shipping lens, and so I can understand why it would be so disappointing to not see what they thought he was telling us we’d see. My view is, James Lance fell in love with his character, and he’s looking at everything from a purely Trent perspective. Someone asking him about how Trent looks at Ted and him saying “oh wow, you noticed that? Yes, that’s significant” could definitely come off as “yes, Trent has feelings for Ted” but I always pretty much interpreted it as “yes, actually Trent is attracted to men and I’m impressed that people picked up on that”. And the final shirt that said it all- “Stay Golden” - is a thank you to Ted and a well-wish for the future, not the love confession we were hoping for.
While I 100% think James Lance did play Trent as having some level of feelings for Ted, ultimately Trent’s love story is with himself. He says it at the final diamond dogs meeting- I don’t necessarily think people change, but they learn to accept the person they always were. Trent went from his tough-as-nails, unflappably suave persona to a massive dweeb 🥹 he wears band shirts and dorky scarves and leopard print shoes! He does cute little paws during diamond dog meetings! He dances awkwardly with his crush’s mom! He takes off his blazer and twirls it around his head like a maniac!
Like to go from being astonished by the fact that Ted actually meant it when he said he enjoyed spending the day together, to joining in with the team’s revelries? He loves himself now!
Like I said, I’m not denying the subtext. I absolutely think Trent has some feelings for Ted, and I absolutely think Ted is bisexual (though I doubt he knows it). But I don’t know, I guess I never saw Ted as showing any conscious sign of reciprocation purely because, to be honest, he IS still a huge mess. He’s way too absorbed in his own guilt and confusion to be able to figure that out. But I didn’t feel like the show actually, canonically shut down the possibility. 6 months, a year down the line…? Trent has finished his book, he’s no longer a sports journalist, Ted is in the states near his son, who’s going to write the fanfic for me about what happens next…? 🤣
I will say one loose end that I sure wish had been tied up was Dr. Jake. So what, Michelle’s just going to…keep dating a walking ethics violation who was shitting on the game to her and her son? I mean, he wasn’t in the final scene so maybe they did break up, though I hope to god that wasn’t supposed to imply that she and Ted would ever end up back together because I WOULD break into Jason Sudeikis’s house and smash his kneecaps.
Anyway, I dunno. I still feel like it was weirdly sad on Ted’s behalf, but I felt like it was a nice ending for everyone else. Overall it was…fine. I’m not tortured by any of it. I’ll just be over here continuing to read Ted/Trent fan fiction 🤷🏻‍♀️
Endwalker lvl 83 spoilers!
Did Tower of Babil, the Zodiark trial and made it to the Loporrits.
I really liked Tower of Babil for how all three sections of the dungeon were different and the final boss in particular was a lot more substantial than some others.
This kind of escalation is a fantastic way to build finality and then pull the twist the story did.
This "fake" climax the story built up to is a massive part of why this twist feels so powerful because even if you can logically look at the level and see the 83 in the quest box corner, it still feels final, so you are still surprised and then questioning where the story could go from there.
It's a fantastic fakeout even with the really obvious context.
More than anything, though, I never, ever expected to like the Ascian imagery. To me the cloaked villain group trope always ends up really uninteresting because in my eyes it often impedes the individuality of the villains.
It works for the followers of more interesting-looking villains, but not the key villains of a story.
And I was dying of second-hand embarrassment almost every time one of them showed up in ARR.
And here we are in the lead-up to the Zodiark trial, where this story makes seeing the nature and first confrontation with Zodiark the most meaningful, powerful, tragic moment they possibly can.
An ancient hivemind seeking salvation from the greatest tragedy in history.
I did not think they could give these stupid masks any kind of presence or (more importantly) meaning, but they did. They did in Shadowbringers and they did here.
And Fandaniel snuffing each and every one of those voices out to take control of Zodiark is made a disgusting insult to their sacrifice, their self-appointed painful, tragic purgatory.
This scene left me in awe.
And it wonderfully continued the subversion of the idea of darkness as something inherently evil.
The fight itself is crazy cool mechanically, too.
I was terrible with reading it, but the fact that controlling Zodiark is equalled to literally manipulating the platform, reality itself, is so good thematically.
The only sad part of this is that we never got to see Zodiark at full power/with Eldibus as the core. It would not make sense for us to beat him at full power, but it is a shame regardless.
Future Ultimate material in some form, at least?
In the end, before he returned to the Aetherial Sea, Fandaniel/Amon did ask us to prove him wrong, so despite everything, there was a spark of hope in him. It was hidden, buried deep, but it existed.
And, as a consequence of all of these events, the world is screwed.
Time for bunnies!
This is another divisive part of the story, but I personally like the Loporrits because the humor that comes with them is very much leaning into the darkness of the situation. The nonchalant, blunt nature of it immediately endeared them to me.
But I know I would have probably very much disliked them if it wasn't for this element. I think if they had gone even with just a little bit more cheery humor, I probably would've disliked this whole thing, so it just barely makes the "just right" column in terms of tone in my eyes.
It's a necessary respite after all of the heavy stuff in relation to Garlemald as well.
Finally, I want to mention my love for the space-castle aesthetic. I love it, and everywhere I see it, it is immediately an highlight for me. I hope we see another location that employs it at some point.
The moon is up there in terms of zones for me just because of this. Another location in the game (among many, perhaps even all) I can't wait to see post-graphical update.
And well, Endwalker continues to be really, really good.
not sure if you are aware but amc plus is not doing early release of any of the daryl dixon episodes. My initial thoughts are, is this because they do not want anything spoiled, that they want everyone to see the same episodes released at the same time. If beth returns I do believe there will be mixed reviews from the GA, the same with the hate that TD got especially in the beginning.
Another thought, Glenn's fake out death. On the Talking Dead right after the episode where he is revealed alive, one of the writers- can't remember which one said something along the line that the reason they did the fake out death for Glenn was to test the waters on fake out deaths. TDers always believed this was about beth. That they planned to revealed her alive. Imo bringing back Madison and Troy are examples of seeing how the GA feels about bringing back "dead" characters. As far as I have read, the GA wasn't mad about them returning.
I have always wondered if the backlash about bethyl was why they didn't bring her back sooner. In the beginning the writers played with her age too much. At the farm she was a teenager. Hershel makes the comment about this, when talking about her and Jimmy. At the prison she is raising a baby yet she tells Axel she's 16 or 17 I can't remember, then daryl refers to her as a dumb college b. Yet EK was in her 30s and you could tell. For example other young characters like lyda, Enrid or Carl seem young on the show, they felt like teens. Beth never did. She should have been aged in the beginning the same as tara or rosita. Everyone argument about bethyl was age. Still is if you follow reddit. After all these years beth would not be in that teenage category. Possibly meaning the GA would be more open to the idea.
Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it?
I think they messed up from a PR standpoint when it comes to not showing the episodes to those who pay for the app early. Personally, I don't really care when the episodes drop. I'm watching them either way. But they've released them early for all the shows for so long now that if they were going to change it, they should have done a very big, very obvious announcement about that, and they didn't. People were expecting to be able to watch it yesterday, and that's not happening. So, now they're doing a lot of damage control. Not good.
As for the rest, you make good points about them wanting everyone to watch the episodes together. I seriously doubt it's about episode 1. So much of that episode--practically all of it, tbh--has been spoiled already in one way or another, that it wouldn't matter if they showed that episode early.
But it's probably not about the first few episodes at all. Maybe they're just setting a precedent so that everyone watches the last episode together. And if that's the case, it does suggest something huge happening in that episode. Let's hope so!
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed reading what you said about tptb testing the waters for the fakeout. I'd forgotten that about Glenn's death. And I agree that no one seems particularly angry about Troy's or Madison's return. Which means tptb have done their job, getting the GA used to this sort of thing so there will be less of a backlash. There will always be detractors, of course. And Troy and Madison aren't a big part of the shipping wars, as Beth is, so there's that. But still, all great points.
And yes, I totally agree that no one will be able to say anything about Beth's age anymore. She told Axel she was 17, and that was only a year or two into the apocalypse. I read in one of the review articles that the Daryl spinoff goes out of its way to tell the audience we are now 12 years into the apocalypse. There must be some reason they are being so specific about that. So, without a doubt, Beth would be close to 30 now.
And just like that, arguments about her age are gone. ;D Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. I guess we'll have lots to talk about on Sunday. 😊 Xoxo! 🍁🍂💓
!!!! BSD5 EP10 SPOILERS !!!!
Tumblr media
i take back all my ironypoisoned statements about bsd i loved that most recent episode a LOT a lot. its not like i disliked the current arc by any means, but it also reached a point in its absurdity where i stopped taking it too seriously - and MAN did this episode bring it back SO GOOD!!!
it did really well - between sigma and dazai being trapped in the flooded room, the sskk fight, the fyodor and sigma scenes, the bram and aya scenes - both with bringing all those subplots to very bleak devastating points, AND with something i have always always criticized about bsd: the violence here feels real, it has stakes - yes i expect a bsd-typical fakeout next episode after we saw dazai get (supposedly) shot to death, yes i know atsushi after being dismembered is probably gonna be fine, one way or another, cuzthats how this show rolls... BUT!!! BUT! let me bask in this until the next episode drops: the WEIGHT of it all!! how PAINFUL they made it!!!
bsd gives characters mortal injuries often, and doesnt really give them lasting impact. remember when atsushi lost his leg? kunikida lost his hands? or when dazai got shot in the eye in dark era? those bits essentially existed just for the striking imagery of violence - for the shot of dazai bleeding through his bandages, but he's still standing, pretty motionless, you know? and it's something you get used to with bsd, as much as i gripe about how the fights tend to not really have stakes...
...but this episode, though? i think going so long seeing these characters crumple and tear like paper and largely be fine, makes the absolute painful bleakness of this feel all the worse: dazai's crumpled on the floor from a broken leg, bleeding from the head, and he can't deliver many of his dazai-typical quips before he gets shot in the shoulder and just grabs it and screams. he doesn't get the satisfaction of being grabbed, or strangled, or whatever else by chuuya's hands, he doesn't even have the control of that: no, all he can do is just sit there while he's shot, over and over, and even when he's on a smarmy genre-savvy self-aware ramble, chuuya just stops him and shoots him in the head - and that's so fucking jarring and makes for INCREDIBLY striking imagery, i love it!!! for once, he's not safe! there's no plot armor! he's in so much pain and he is actively feeling it!!! AND THATS SO IMPORTANT TO HUMANIZING A CHARACTER LIKE DAZAI
AND THE SSKK FIGHT GOD DONT GET ME STARTED - the way atsushi's screams were voice acted, my god youd think they were actually tearing off yuto uemura's limbs in that recording studio. sweet jesus. you see people complain a lot about manga-aname adaptation changes but, as someone who hasnt read the manga, any cuts studio bones made were made up for by the absolutely brilliant audio - the music and voice acting - in every way, in this episode. the screams of pain. fyodor's gayass little stunt. so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also sigma was awesome. aya was awesome. bram was awesome. fyodor made me feel a type of way (HIS ACTING WAS SO GOOD. MY GOD!!! TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SIGMA'S NAIVETE LIKE THAT!!! SPEAKING TO THEM IN TROPES BECAUSE THEY'RE LITERALLY A BOOK CHARACTER AAAUHHHH). 10/10 we are so fucking back. I LOVE ANIME.
so far, how would you rank all of the tfota universe books, if this isn’t too difficult to ask? :o
Not me having premonitions about this ask yesterday.... so you're just in time bc I ranked them in my mind
5) The Stolen Heir - Not that I think it's bad, but it's def a two-parter and I have no frame of reference for where the story is going and can't really say if I am gonna like it once it's concluded. BUT it had inconsistencies and a predictable twist whose execution didn't make up for the predictability so I'm pretty sure this would be a number 5 book either way.
4) The Cruel Prince - Again, not because I dislike it. In fact I think that this is the one I've reread most? It's just that I don't have as many intense emotions about it as the rest of the books. I still go feral over certain things (the DUELS the SWORD GIFTING the JUDE SEES CARDAN BEING MEAN TO TARYN SO SHE PICKS HIM UP AND SLAMS HIM INTO A TREE)
3) The Queen of Nothing - I know this book is bullied usually but I just. I just love it so much. I'm a fluffy bitch. I love that the first half is all the ugly feelings coming out and then the second half is so romantic and fairy-tale-like and. AAaaaaAAA I loved it as the conclusion. These books were never plot heavy and I def didn't need an epic conclusion so I don't mind that it's short. The thing that prevents me from ranking it higher is the lack of a Taryn character arc, she just flipped a switch and became normal because she got Eva'd and tbh I needed a journey for that kind of a 180 and love her too much to ignore it.
2) The Wicked King - I just think it's neat to watch Jude fall from the heights she climbed to in book 1 because of her inability to trust others. And I understand her, she has every reason to mistrust everyone, so it's not annoying to watch her flail around trying to be a one woman army. Also it's the only book I've ever read where my reaction to the ending was both "I WANT THIS TO BE A FAKEOUT" and "I DON'T WANT THIS TO BE A FAKEOUT" so congratulations on that
1)How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories - Because I feel like this is the rawest TFOTA experience possible. It's a storybook with illustrations. A STORYBOOK WITH ILLUSTRATIONS!! The perfect format for this series imo!!! And I really love the story, I love that it's about Cardan's relationship with narrative and self image and only a little bit about Jude. I love that it focused on stuff we had no idea about and those we only heard about in passing instead of just "here's what Cardan was thinking during THIS scene". And I love Cardan and his POV was so chill and filled with denial compared to Jude's and hhhhh lovely
What are your favorite Grace Callaway books?
She has a good-sized backlist, and I've just started my third series by her.
Grace Callaway is for when you wanna read like, a Tessa Dare-esque sense of humor mixed with MacLeanian girl gang/"oh there she goes, cartwheeling into mortal peril while the big man who's in love with her shrieks in panic" vibes, topped off with lots of sex scenes that are generally more creative than those you'll find in trad HR, often with a dusting of light kink. Age gaps are common, but not guaranteed. A lot of her heroines are virgins, but not all. You'll frequently find a hero who's like "God this bitch gives me a migraine but I love her so much" and a heroine who's all "what? like it's hard?" when her hero cautions her against deep throating him on the first try.
I....love these qualities. I did break my usual protocol re: reading out of order, because I began her most recent series first. And that's fine, but her books are generational. So everyone's kids grow up and fuck each other, as God intended.
Generally, though, I'd recommend
The whole Lady Charlotte's Society of Scoundrels series, which is a Victorian Charlie's Angels setup. Such a solid series thus far. The main entries are:
Olivia and the Masked Duke--Heroine sees the hero, who she's known since he saved her life when she was like 12, fucking another woman in a D/s scenario and realizes that she Must Have Him. A good Stern Daddy/Bratty sub book, with the added bonus of the hero being like... 10-12 years older than the heroine and feeling Super Guilty about corrupting her. He's friends with her daaaaad which I ... love.
Pippa and the Prince of Secrets--Widowed heroine reconnects with the guy who gave her her first kiss when they were teens. He's now the scarred leader of a band of child spies (more common than you'd think in historical romance) and he wears a mask and has an exhibitionism kink. It is HOT it is ANGSTY, it's probably my favorite Grace because the moment when he lets her see his whole face is... so much. As is the scene where he gives her multiples in front of like dozens of people in an orgy.
Fiona and the Enigmatic Earl--Intrepid spitfire crosses paths with an ESPIONAGE EARL (TM) on one of her "missions" and they try to do a fakeout makeout to stay undercover but it turns into him getting her off against a wall and after that he's like "uh well I guess I should propose" and they try to have a cool respectable marriage but their passion is 2 Much. At one point one point they fuck in a room knowing that someone is watching through a peephole. This happens more than you'd think in Grace Callaway's England.
Glory and the Master of Shadows--Duke's daughter becomes the mentee of a Chinese underworld master (not sexy master; he's been celibate for YEEEEARS) and he's like "wow would be much easier to mentor her if I didn't fantasize about putting my dick in her mouth on the reg". He does eat her out in a hallway with her parents sleeping like, feet away.
Then, outside of that series, I love:
The Duke Who Knew Too Much--Okay this one is fucking balls out hilarious because the heroine is like an INTREPID DETECTIVE (a lot of Grace heroines are INTREPID DETECTIVES who like, lick their finger and test the air and go "he went north" while the hero is all, "I mean we received a ransom note telling us he went north but okay" to sum up the vibe) and she comes upon the hero, a scary lord man, doing a bit o' light CNC with his mistress, and she's like "EGADS" and then when the mistress dies he has to take her to a sex club and be like "look I'm not a murderer I just like to tie bitches up and fuck them" and she's like "... tell me more. for the case."
M is for Marquess--I like this one a lot, because it has one of my historical romance novel tropes, which is "girl has mild asthma so the hero is afraid of fucking her to death". This hero is SO. SO AFRAID. OF KILLING HER WITH HIS PENIS. He also is like "my dead wife called me a depraved fiend, no one shall accept me", because he likes domming a bit. A lot of Grace heroes have dead wives, who were not fun. This book also has one of the least annoying romance novel children, mostly because he has anxiety, and the heroine kinda calls the hero a bad father...? I died.
Her Prodigal Passion--I like this one because the hero is a total wastrel and then as he's shaping up the heroine, who has been obsessed with him for years but gave up on it after he gave her an orgasm while he was high (that's True Rake Game) and then forgot about it, ends up entangled with him. There's a scene where phrenology, the practice of feeling skulls for lumps to sum up your personality, is used in a Sexy Way.
i think people, including myself, need to calm down about the ben reilly thing in ATSV
i know we're all upset because of the way he was treated, and the way he went out, and "why is miguel being treated with respect and accuracy while ben is the edgy 90s comics joke despite them both being from edgy 90s comics" (not to mention that peter was actually the edgy one during those days, it was ben who was more lighthearted and taught peter how to be himself again after becoming so jaded, but uh, we had miles help peter go through that arc in ITSV so i dunno what you expected and i dont know why you'd bring that up)
i get that, hell, before today i was on your side too
but i feel ATSV ben is harmless, and the only thing wrong with all of that was the timing
if you're a ben reilly fan, you know that for like, the past decade or so, feels like, he's been treated like utter garbage
we had that fakeout return in kaine's scarlet spider comic, the clone conspiracy fiasco, the peter david run that shouldve been amazing but editorial hates ben reilly, faking us out again by making ben spider-man again, then making him chasm, nick lowe saying ben has no place in spider-man, then the dumbass dark web "king chasm" thing
but lets be honest, we all know that the directors and writers of ATSV had no ill will towards this, and they didnt *mean* to upset us
they did the same thing with noir a few years back, we can assume they wanted to do the same thing with ben
the only reason noir didnt sting and this *does,* is because of the terrible hand that ben's been dealt
the guys behind spider-verse know their stuff, we know they do, but think: all of the stuff that happened to ben happened during the time they were working on *both* spider-verse films
and when you're pushing animation past its limits and reinventing the wheel, and trying to put your best foot forward in writing, directing, all that, you dont really have time to *know* what the hell is going on in recent comics
yes, spider-verse was inherently built on something recent, but to that i say, first time we heard about that miles animated film was like, 2014, 2015? and lets be honest, the original film pretty much has nothing to do with the original spider-verse comics
i'd say across the spider-verse, moreso, is an adaptation of it, and even then, it just takes the general premise of A BUNCH of spider-people and two teams of them going to war with each other
so lets all calm down, okay?
or not, you can stay mad, i see why, this WAS bad timing, but lets just relax, okay?
lets hope we see him again in beyond, and we most likely will, i dont think they're gonna keep him down like that
Don’t worry too much about Jancy
Like everyone I hate the completely unnecessary Stancy shipteasing they’re doing, dredging up the love triangle is doing it a disservice to all characters involved (esp Nancy, way to go “feminist” ST writers). It’s disgusting and pointless. But don’t be too worried. It may be unnecessary, pointless, disgusting and just plain bad writing, but I do think it’s all just shipteasing. Not that they’re actually intending to rekindle Stancy.
Because:
- Everything they did pre-s4 with both Jancy and Stancy, showing Stancy being a complete disaster as a couple and Jancy being the opposite. Also how they devoted time to showing Steve getting over Nancy as part of his development.
- The scene early in s4 where Jancy were talking about why they love each other felt very genuine and emotionally underscored.
- Jonathan is just confused about the relationship, his relationship with his family and the future. Not really wanting it to end (note how he immediately backpedals when Argyle challenges on if he wants to break up with Nancy. “I don’t know!” is pretty much the key words from Jonathan’s freakout scene, in regards to everything).
- Nancy is just confused by Jonathan’s recent behavior and it has made her a little bit insecure in the relationship.
- It’s clear Nancy misses Jonathan very much. You can see it when she goes snooping around with Fred, and later with Robin. Her dynamic with Robin improves as the season goes along but early on it really looks like all Nancy’s thinking is “God I wish I was doing this with Jonathan, he wouldn’t ask all these dumb questions, he just gets it.”
- Jonathan takes one look at a photo of him and Nancy and instantly formulates and executes a plan to go cross-country for her because she may be in danger.
- Nancy doesn’t really do anything in all the disgusting Stancy shiptease scenes. It’s all looks and actions that can be misconstrued. She picks spider web out of Steve’s hair - that’s not something romantic. She looks at Steve when he’s shirtless (and Robin gives her a look like she’s into it) - yeah he’s standing literally right in front of her about to jump into the UD. She jumps in after Steve - she would do that for anyone. She clings to Steve when shit is going down - yeah because she’d like die if she didn’t hold on to someone. She bandages Steve up - she would do that for anyone. None of hers (or Steve’s really) actions really imply romantic feelings, what makes them shipteasing is the diegetic music playing and the tropes referenced (wounded soldier fantasy for example). But the music can be used to misdirect and tropes can be subverted. Those choices can just be part of a fakeout.
- Apart from that, it’s other characters commenting on the ship, like Robin and Eddie. Do their words mean anything? No. Eddie doesn’t know them at all, disregard him. As for Robin: early on in the season they show that her own romantic life is a mess and she’s constantly doubting if she’s reading the situation right with girls she likes. Later with Nancy she straight up says she’s bad at reading social cues and stuff like that. I really think there’s a chance they will come back around to this. Jancy reunites, their love is shown, and Robin may even remark to Steve or whatever that she’s really bad at reading signals.
my boyfriend’s reads on teen wolf so far, part 3 (this is the second half of 5b)
links to parts 1 and 2 :)
“how is this town not under martial law? why hasn’t there been a mass exodus enforced by child protective services to get these kids out of there?”
when lydia killed valack: “that was iconic, but i’m still wondering how this man got out of this supernatural psychiatric prison and then somehow managed to run that same prison with the same staff. did no one think that was strange?”
on the sheriff: “he’s done some messed up stuff, but i stand by him. if there’s one true dilf in the show, it’s him, even more so than chris argent. which is probably more revealing of me than anything else.”
on parrish’s relationship with lydia: “i mean i definitely don’t like it. i guess mild props to him for keeping those sex dreams to himself. MAYBE that’s why he wanted to leave town? MAYBE we should give him some credit? but also i can’t blame lydia, i can’t say that if there was a hot older man in town who was simultaneously the lord of death and this guy destined to save the world that i wouldn’t fall for it.”
summing up his reaction to theo (at the end of 5b): “he’s just like really annoying and honestly i don’t think that he’s that compelling. it feels like every episode he comes on the show and approaches scott or one of his people and says “you really shouldn’t trust me but i know something you need to know” and then he betrays them and walks on screen with the dumbest look on his face.” 😪
on mason being the beast: “this was the first time i was right about something in this fucking show.”
“melissa is just trying to get fired at this point, but she continues to do what’s necessary.”
“i love that they manage to keep allison around in subtle but powerful ways.”
on marie-jeanne: “i don’t know how to describe her accent but it sounds like they were trying to go for all of them at once. but she was iconic and she should be back on the show. i was honestly hoping they would find a way to resurrect her to kill the beast again.”
on the dread doctors: “this was the fifth season in a row where there are villains impervious to anything right up until the moment where they need to die.”
he LOVED the sewer scenes where theo betrays deucalion and then scott, only to get his neck snapped by deucalion and find out that he’s been a double agent, only to have gerard interrupt and then get betrayed by his own son. “it’s like that meme of those spidermen pointing their fingers at each other.”
“but i loved when theo got his neck snapped.”
he’s PISSED at how lackluster kira’s send off was and that his theory about her being the real key to defeating the beast (not parrish) was wrong: “i don’t understand the entire buildup of her internal conflict looking back on it. they gave her all the pieces. she spends all season struggling to contain this fiery energy, they constantly mention it’s parrish which feels like a fakeout, and they sent her back to the skinwalkers to figure out how to help her friends. and then she comes back with some “secret power” just to send this one twink to hell? they did her so dirty.”
continued, because he needed to rant: “cause she left again! and in that episode everyone is like dying, so it’s like okay she’s coming back and she’s going to be the deus ex machina. but instead she comes back to send a teenager to hell? i’m just picturing her at shiprock like “okay how do we deal with the beast?” and the skinwalkers are just like “so you’re actually going to have nothing to do with that. but what you are going to do is send a teenager to hell so that we can torture him.” what was even their connection to theo???”
on theo’s punishment: “that was dark. it really was strange how kira’s final act on the show was to say “your sister wants to see you” and then call up an ostensibly undead version of his sister who pulls him into this realm that we’ve never heard of before as he begs for his life. i would say that was a tonal shift.”
