Happy New Year 2024!
Happy New Year from Aotearoa New Zealand! Among the first to celebrate the new year, we rang in 2024 eighteen hours before most of my folks back home on the east coast of the US. In fact, I chatted with the Meg(h)ans and Erin at 11:30 PM EST while I was standing on a beach in Timaru at 5:30 PM in NZ!
New Year's Eve 2023
For NYE, I joined a group attending the Rock the Park, a rock concert put on in Hagley Park. The weather held out for a while, but it did start to rain around 11:30! Luckily, the fireworks were not impacted and I was well prepared! The lineup for the night was comprised of NZ rock bands Dolphin Friendly, Volts, Racing, and Elemeno P. Although we started as a group of ten, we dwindled to five by the end of the night - Colleen, Sewon, Kathleen, Sofia, and Margaret.
New Year's Day 2024
Today, for New Year's Day, we started 2024 off right! Margaret, Sewon, and I took a trip about two hours south to Timaru for the Caroline Bay Carnival - a yearly event that takes place for two weeks starting on Boxing Day! The summer festival includes food vendors, carnival rides, and musical performances.
On the way, we also stopped in the town of Geraldine (shout out to you, Nana!) for some coffee and a snack. We explored around town, watched the performance, checked out the rose garden, hopped to the beach, grabbed some ice cream, and then road the Lion's Club tiny train around in a circle.
All around, a great way to start 2024! Cheers to more adventures!
