Characters from Psych as part of your escape room team:
Shawn: probably banned from most escape rooms for breaking all the things they tell you explicitly not to touch. Solves each puzzle in about fifteen seconds and doesn't reveal anything until it's a sufficiently dramatic moment, so your team fails to escape in time. 2/10
Gus: the ideal escape room teammate. organized, methodical, communicative, respectful of the room, has a whole system worked out. Overthinks things a bit but the team would escape in good time. 9/10
Jules: runner up for best teammate, not as familiar with escape rooms as Gus but very enthusiastic and good instincts for troubleshooting puzzles. Helps keep people on task. 8/10
Lassie: the actual worst teammate. Thinks the escape room is every man for himself. Can't be trusted not to shoot a lock. 0/10
Henry: grumbles the entire time and makes sure you know he thinks the whole thing is dumb, but occasionally offers key insights on certain puzzles and doesn't break anything. 4/10
McNab: he's just happy to be invited. Not the fastest at solving puzzles but puts the work in and manages to figure out a couple that everyone else ditched in frustration. Never gets credit for his work. 6/10
Chief Vick: would not be tricked into going to the escape room in the first place. N/A

oh, it's that time of the year, time for
🗝️ Escape Room Wrapped 2023 🗝️
This year:
You went to 10 escape rooms, and got out of 10 of them. Good for you!
Out of all of those, only 1 was a horror-themed room. Spooky! (but you still got scared plenty in non-horror rooms, you silly head, you!)
You asked for many hints. All good, part of the game!
You teamed up with 7 different friends. Many brains are better than one!
Your biggest team was made out of 6 people, and your smallest, out of 3. Which worked better?
You got handcuffed once. Always a good time, huh.
Your favorite franchises were Escape Games and El Acertijo. You went to 3 of their rooms. Say thank you!
Your favorite room was Paraná Airlines (PLANE THEMED ROOM, WITH THE COOLEST ENDING)
Your least favorite room was La Condena de los Inocentes (Lawyer's office themed? Kind of a lame theme and pretty forgettable, except for that REALLY fun scare that got us good)
You acted the fool in all of them. Because of course you did!
To many more enigmas solved in 2024! 🗝️

Far be it from me to suggest that Disney isn't making enough money at their theme parks, but it occurred to me to wonder the other day why they haven't added a particular category of entertainment to their resort hotels.
Escape rooms.
Seriously, those things are fun af, and they require very little in the way of staffing to operate, and as an adjunct to the hotels, there would be a built-in market of people in conveniently sized groups who might find themselves with an hour to kill between other Magic Band appointments, and Disney has an endless well of IPs to draw on for themes to dress up the scenarios.

Omg your escape room comment in that other post… if you randomly grouped up the shepherds in a couple groups how would an escape room go for them?
Blade: he would misunderstand the purpose of the exercise and just physically bust through the door because 'the goal is to escape the room as quickly as possible'. If given a second chance, he would take a backseat (aka he probably wouldn't be 'team leader') and would think a little too literally to be the most effective escape room player (i.e. if a clue says to look north he's going to be at the north wall rather than looking through book pages for the word 'north'), but he'd manage capably enough!
Trouble: if he's alone or with a few calmer people, he could probably get into the spirit of the game and solve riddles pretty handily (he would take some time to warm up to 'puzzle logic', but could grasp it readily enough after a few minutes and get pretty enthusiastic), but if you paired him with more chaotic energies (Chase, Ayla, or Briony), they're going to just start bodily hurling objects and punching through walls to try to get at the clues inside and would overall be very destructive
Tallys: she would do extremely well unless saddled with a partner who was absolutely slow or useless to her... she could probably solve a room entirely on her own and would also work very well in a small, focused team, but if in a room that has to be solved with someone else and paired solely with someone like Chase or Lavinet, it's probably not going to get done lol
Shery: she's extremely adept and one of the faster problem-solvers on the team, but it really depends on the team composition if she gets heard or shouted over... if she's paired with someone like Tallys or Riel, she's an incredible asset, but if she's shoved into a team with Blade, Ayla, Trouble, etc., she'll be holding the obvious keys to the puzzle like "um... you don't actually need to do that..." ._. while they're screaming and probably attempting to throttle each other or hanging off the chandelier gfldkgfd
Riel: other people are a burden to him, unless the escape room has physical elements that require two people (holding down opposite levers at the same time, etc.). Most of the time he'd just be like "SIT IN THE CORNER. SHUT UP." and could solve everything on his own in record time, but that's no fun, so no one ever wants to play with him 😅
Chase: this dude is an idiot and illiterate so he's not going to be the best escape room player, but he also understands certain puzzle logic and puns fairly well (possessing a certain level of insight and intelligence as well as having been on multiple scavenger-style hunts before), so if he's not intent on trolling, he could be pretty decent at it! However, he'd always be cheating by picking locks or doors that he definitely is not supposed to pick lol
Red: he'd be an excellent escape room player (probably the best among the bunch) and would most likely be the best team leader for an escape room, as well! He can maintain a level head, delegate, and put together riddles and clues with ease, so under his leadership, pretty much any team would be able to escape in no time!
Ayla: absolutely not. She's too impatient to listen to dumbass clues and sickly riddles (you need to dissolve a bath bomb in water to get to the key inside it? BITE INTO THAT SHIT LIKE AN APPLE) and is more focused on karate-kicking her way through plywood. The idea of escape rooms also makes her claustrophobic and nervous, so she's smashing that whole room up like a cocaine-fueled rocker in a hotel she didn't pay for
Briony: she's excited to get into the spirit of the escape room and is pretty good at riddles (probably on par with Trouble and Chase, so slower than Shery, Tallys, Riel, or Red), but would be so clumsy and unintentionally strong that she'd be accidentally breaking knobs off of doorways or lids off of boxes left and right... she'd probably be consigned to a corner for inadvertently breaking everything she touched!
Lavinet: she's intelligent enough to do well at an escape room, but I'm not sure the proper level of interest would be there... it would be something she was forced into by the group, not something she ever suggested they do as her own idea. She'd be reaching her arm into some hidey-hole in the wall like "when do you think the last time they sanitized this was? 😒🤧"
Halek: I don't think he could be arsed to finish an escape room and would probably be dead weight LGJRG like listlessly rummaging through a pile of blocks without knowing what he's looking for, just to look busy to everyone else, unless you somehow lit the fire of competition inside of him, in which case he would actually be quite sharp at solving the riddles! Probably in the A tier!
The ranks would go:
S tier - Riel, Shery, Tallys, Red
A tier - Halek, Lavinet, Trouble (hovers between A and B tier)
B tier - Blade, Briony
C tier - Chase, Ayla

Different Equations, Same Results
Leverage one shot, 972 words, AO3 here
---
"So, don't peel the wallpaper, leave the electric outlets alone and, thanks to a previous group, don't try to break any windows. Any questions?" Samantha smiled broadly at the group who booked the 4 o'clock reservation.
The group was two men and a woman, they said their team name would be Leverage Inc. The story they picked would be difficult for only three people, but Sam was ready with hints if they needed them.
"So we just have to get out?" The blonde woman cocked her head to the side.
Samantha wondered if she knew the concept of an Escape Room.
"Yup, just solve the puzzles, find the murder weapon, and reveal the motive. Once you do all that, you'll find the last key and be able to come back out into the lobby." She led them down the hallway and into the Murder Mystery room. "Your time starts after the recording plays and," she motioned to the button on the wall, "just buzz this if you get stuck and you can always come back out this way if you want to quit the game."
Sam made sure the main door was unlocked then started the video. Per policy, she stood at the door while it played and listened to one of the men chuckle at the storyline.
After a minute, it seemed they had settled into a plan, so she turned to walk back down the hallway to her desk, debating what to order for dinner.
"So what puzzles are we supposed to do?"
Sam almost had a heart attack.
There, seated on her desk, was the blonde woman from the Leverage group.
"Wha- How?" Sam stammered, "How'd you get out so- nevermind." She probably just slipped out of the door while Sam was busy listening to the recording. "I'm sorry, I probably didn't explain it right, you only use the entrance door if it's an emergency."
The woman cocked her head again and frowned. "I didn't use the door. You said we just had to get out to the lobby, did we win?"
"No, you have to follow the story and go through the rooms. The story your friend picked has three different rooms you can explore and get through. I'll walk you back to your door."
The woman uncurled and popped off the desk. She still looked a little confused, but the men she was with looked competent enough to explain it better when they got back.
Sam opened the door and hustled the woman back in.
Once Sam got back to her desk, she switched over to the Murder Mystery room security cameras and - did he disassemble the TV?
Concerned, Sam pressed the intercom to their room. "Sir? Please don't interfere with the electronics in the room, there aren't any hints hidden in the TV."
"Dammit Hardison," the man with the long hair's voice sounded little through the old speakers. He shook his head and cursed fondly, the blonde laughed at them.
The man who had the TV face down on the floor shrugged good naturedly and the men worked together to reattach it to the wall.
Up the hall, the Mad Scientist group buzzed for a hint.
Once Sam coached them through their puzzle, she went back to the desk to check in on the Murder Mystery group.
They were gone.
Sam clicked through the cameras to make sure she didn't miss them. Once she was sure, she hurried back down the hallway and opened their door, peeking in.
The first room was empty, as was the second, neither had the hints disturbed. Sam decided to keep going into the third room. She looked around to where she knew the last key was hidden and found it still in the lock box.
Confused, she looked around, then up. The air vents were open and… Sam sighed and rushed back to the lobby.
"We went into each room this time," the blonde woman chirped cheerfully.
"How did you even get through the doors? The keys were still hidden!"
"Oh," her smile faded into a pout, "were we not supposed to pick the locks?"
"Dammit Parker, I told you that wasn't how it worked." The long haired man crossed his arms and glared.
"And you didn't finish the story," Sam protested weakly, glancing at the clock. If she let them claim this as a win they would have beaten the record time by less than half.
"Oh, we found the victory video on the server and watched it while Parker got into the vents the first time," the other man, Hardison apparently, explained. "It was a nice touch having the smart TV in the room." He said it like a compliment.
The final man, the only one who hadn't revealed his name, pulled the fake knife from his pocket and twirled it casually. "We got the weapon, motive, and we got out."
"But… the puzzles?"
"We picked the locks and got into the server with the TV. Those were the clues, right?" Parker held up the laces from the shoes, which each had a clue on the sole, and the prop hairpins from the vanity, "You had the picks right out on the table."
"No! You were supposed to use the hints to get the combinations and passwords, not pick the locks," Sam tried her best to explain.
"Hey," Hardison shot her a charming smile, "different equation, same results."
That seemed to cheer up Parker, who bounced up and threw an arm over the long haired man's shoulders. "So, we win, right?"
Silent for a moment, Sam weighed her hourly wage against the headache she felt building behind her eyes. "Yeah," she settled on, "sure, you win. Congratulations."
She gestured half-heartedly to the photo op wall and the 'We Escaped!' sign. "Who's phone do you want the picture on?"

Introducing Me
I suppose it's time for a proper intro post, since I don't believe I did one when I started this blog and if I did, it's time for a new one, anyway!
I write stuff! You can find my books on my website: http://www.ccbridges.net
I mostly write male/male romance because I started out writing slash fanfiction. I've got a few poly, f/f and m/f stories in there too.
I have done a lot of escape rooms. 200. Which is why I wrote a book about escape rooms (Escape Room Tango, m/f), and why I'm writing another one (Escape with Her Heart, f/f), and may write a third (Working title Escape Masquerade m/m).
In RL the day job is librarian. I teach card making to senior citizens twice a month. I have an amazing kid on the Autism Spectrum with ADHD. Last year we lost our beloved dog at age 17.5 and I am still not over it.
I am looking forward to the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion, even though I haven't finished patch 6.5 yet.
I'm currently rethinking this whole writing career thing. Hope to have good news in 2024!

All you wanted to do was have a fun night out with your friends in that new escape room that opened on the edge of town. It’s been four days now. Your friends are gone. The escape room just keeps on going, on and on and on. It won’t let you sleep or eat or drink or rest. You are alone
