Chapter 388 - Touya .... This chapter is literally fire
The chapter begins with Kendo immobilizing the AFO spies with her hands and informing the other heroes that they have messed with the system, so the shelters will not move again. The heroes then start evacuating all civilians back to the surface
The U.A. robots are there too and are ready to take people to other safe spaces, all they have to do is give them an order. The heroes instruct the civilians not to look the other way to avoid seeing Dabi's giant heat sphere, but the Todorokis ignore that warning
Rei makes a worried expression and immediately gets in one of the bike-shaped robots, asking Natsuo to protect his sister. She then asks the robot to take her to the source of that heat, the robot says that he's there to follow the human's orders and the flashback ends
Back to the present, the robot has been totally destroyed by the heat and "died" doing a thumbs-up. Rei screams "TOYA" as her face continues to burn. Endeavor wonders if she's keeping herself alive by using her ice on herself and plans to do the same thing with Toya
Endeavor tells her to back off because she will burn to death, but she responds by saying that the same goes to them. Dabi starts mumbling "moooom" and Rei apologizes to him.
Next he says "Natsu-kun, Fuyumi-chan..." and Rei realizes that the two of them have come too. She says they shouldn't be there, but Fuyumi says she doesn't want to lose anyone else. Natsuo remembers when he used to ignore Toya's complaints, imagines himself properly talking to him as a kid, and yells "stop causing so much trouble, stupid brother!"
Endeavor thinks to himself that if he uses more fire to propel them upwards, Toya's body will reach its limit. He asks "please, don't take them too..." and we see a vision of all of them in a what-if future, with a grown-up Toya wearing Dabi's jacket. End of chapter

I honestly wish coercion never became a murky part of the todofam plot because the todofam fandom is worse than ever to navigate. With what we’re stuck with now, I’m willing to bet neither rei nor endeavor saw what happened as s/a and it will hit like a ton of bricks when they both see their separate therapists that yes this is a thing even if both parties were unaware at the time. I don’t even know if hori knows it. Like he obviously knows coercion is bad, but is he aware that by rei not wanting to for natsuo and shouto that it would technically count as s/a? For me such a topic is a step too far to enjoy todofam anymore and it’s sad because they were my favorite part of the manga. Just one of multiple disappointments in the final act.
Tbh, I'm not sure I understand well your ask. The element of coercion is not a last-minute addition - it has been the basic feature of Enji's and Rei's marriage, ever since we first heard of it back in Ch 31:
We did not know the specific details, but the underlying premise was established - the marriage was an unethical transaction - money for Rei's quirk with the understanding that children would be created until Endeavor got the tool he wanted for his own purpose.
The tension around Shouto's existence was also established already back then. How his resemblance to Enji is Rei's trigger...
... or how Shouto perceived his very existence to be a breaking point for his mother.
Children are perceptive this way. Just like Touya understood that he was being replaced, Shouto understood that his birth was a breaking point for Rei and in fact the whole family. The coercion, the sad truth that Rei did not want to give birth to Shouto is written between the lines already back then.
It makes the whole drama between Rei and Shouto that much more believable. If Rei breaks not "just" from being hit by Enji and being helpless to protect her child, but because there is a much deeper violation at play. Rei having to bear Shouto (and Natsuo) as part of a dirty transaction, something she even agreed to, the feelings of repulsion, then the feelings of guilt because Rei is fundamentally a good person who understands that the children are faultless in this situation.
Rei's limp pose as she can't bear to embrace Shouto as he clings to her...
... only then to touch him only on the right side.
Rei is trying her best, but the way she leashes out against Shouto makes more sense with this whole unwanted birth aspect added to the picture.
Just as Shouto sensing his mother's mixed feelings towards him make it believable why he would not try to see her for a decade, despite we know how much he loves his mother and how much he misses her. He believes that even looking at him is triggering for Rei.
And yes, it's a very dark origin, but it was never portrayed as anything else. The fact that Rei and Shouto are able to forge a positive relationship after all that is all the more precious. I'm sure Rei already had plenty of therapy (she spent 10 years in a mental hospital) and has faced most of her guilt, and Shouto reconnecting with her was the last push she needed to get back on her feet.
Shouto and Rei released each other from their respective guilts - so they could move forward and focus on recovery. Because while I'm sure Rei was coerced into having another baby, I'm also certain that she still loves him and is happy about his existence now.
As for Enji - I think he's definitely aware by now how screwed up the entire premise of his family was. Up until now he kept moving from crisis to crisis, having his hero work as an outlet for his feelings of guilt (like we saw in both the Nomu and AFO fights). But I think if he stops because he chooses or is forced to retire, all that crushing guilt will hit him (I hope).
I'm honestly more worried about Shouto who is still carrying the burden of his birth being a breaking point for the entire family, and what pushed Touya over the edge. Right now he's got a solid enough support structure at UA to deal with it, but I could definitely see him suffer from depression later in life.

MHA Chapter 390: Todoroki Rising
About Shoto’s words to his mother..... Shoto you already care, yes you might not have been able to cry as easy due to your trauma, but you have shown time and time again you have cared about others. That's why you never went to see your mom for so long, you were afraid of what seeing you would do to her. You only went back, after your heart was opened cause you realized you can maybe save her in the same way.
After that you continued to help others. You empathized with Iida's darkness and helped him remember who he wanted to be. You were at Midoriya's side always helping him out, giving him half your lunch to giving him advice with Kota, to bringing him back to UA. You went to rescue Bakugo, knowing it was the right thing to do, damn the consequences. Yes the remedial course may have given you an assignment, but you wanted to help those children open up, sure the first time your approach didn’t work but you stepped up and tried again. You continued to show your friendship to Bakugo, knowing he was like you and was closed off from having friendship just like you once did. You could have selfishly went to your father and got an experience like no one else, but you didn’t.... you brought Bakugo and Midoriya, the two who also aimed for the top.... you did something your father would have never dreamed of doing. From the light novels, you gave Aoyama your seat when he was feeling sick on the bus, and you helped Mei with rounding up her inventions, leaving your precious photo of your mother to blow away possibly (dont worry Mei found it with her quirk later)

Shoto Todoroki - An Extension of Endeavor
As we all know for most of the series, Endeavor saw Shoto as an extension of himself, a tool to surpass All Might. Shoto also for a long time saw himself this way, which is why he stopped using his fire. Sure part of it was to get revenge, but the real reason was he feared becoming Endeavor, as if using his fire would cause that. He has been learning over time, his fire is his own, his whole quirk is his own, he gets to define what his fire means. And along with that, he gets to choose what to do with his life.
Unfortunately though, these aren’t the only two who think or have seen Shoto as an Extension of Endeavor. His mom was psychologically unstable, and didn’t mean to do what she did, but regardless she poured boiling water because she thought Shoto was Endeavor. But it doesn’t stop there. Its not just his family who sees him as an extension of his father, there are many examples scattered throughout MHA, including non canon things.
Look at the Sports Festival. Though Shoto lost, he got hundreds more Draft Picks than Bakugo, who won the festival. Not only that, but it was clear Shoto wasn’t even giving it his all to the audience watching.
Afterwards when Momo congratulates him he says “its because of his father”. You might be thinking at this point he is just being his negative cold self, but he knows.
Inasa at the Provisional Licensing Exam is another example. And ok he was being a bit Endeavor like when they first met, but it was only AFTER Inasa said “ah so you’re Endeavor’s Son”. He didn’t say nice to meet you, lets be friends, it was “oh you’re this famous guys son, so I am going to come say hi”. And to Shoto, he is probably use to people using him cause of his father, or only talking to him because he is Endeavor’s kid. This is probably why its so hard for him to trust people. I really don’t blame him on going off on Inasa here to be frankly honest. No it wasn’t the kindest thing or most heroic thing to do, but its very human.
Now it took awhile in the story, but here is Hawks proving Shoto’s words about how heros only wanted him for the Draft Picks because of him being Endeavor’s son
Now in the last few chapters, some may have thought Dabi hated both Endeavor and “his puppet” Shoto.
But as we see from Chapter 294, that isn’t really the case. I am sure there is some jealousy there, but Touya cares more about Endeavor hurting than hurting Shoto. As soon as Endeavor faints, he leaves. All he sees is that Shoto is an extension of Endeavor

Shoto was NOT the downfall of the Todoroki Family.
I am surprised to see people still saying that Shoto’s birth was the beginning of the downfall of the Todoroki family. Did you guys read the latest chapters..... it was very clear that the major dysfuction started much before. First off, the who quirk marriage thing to begin with was fucked up. But at first things weren’t so bad. Enji was probably a workaholic, but he was around his kids. This is why Fuyumi probably has a bit of a lighter approach with her dad, she knew him before he really went off the deep end, they had somewhat of a relationship. But Natsuo said that his father was a stranger. Look at when he was born, his dad never looked at him at all. Shoto was not the beginning of the downfall, he was the product of it. Enji was yelling at Rei not cause of Shoto most of the time either, it was over Touya. And when Touya died, Rei's mental health went to shit, and Enji became even worse cause now his only focus was Shoto. Touya was a cause of a lot of pain, but its not his fault either, its Enji's.

MHA - Actions Speak More than Words
Enji tries to convince Touya there are other paths for him, other than being a hero.... but how can he truly mean this, when his actions show all he can do is Endeavor to be the #1 Hero.
As for Rei, how could she speak about finding your own path and being your own person, when she was bound to Enji, and before that, bound to her family’s ranking and lineage.
Touya’s death really broke Rei and shortly after came her lowest point when she hurt Shoto, and as we know ended up in a mental institute
But for Enji, you would think his first born burning up would be his lowest point...
....but it wasn’t because he hadn’t lost his true love, and no its not Shoto.....
....it was that coveted number 1 position but more of what it meant.... strength, righteousness, adversity, power, ego. It wasn’t until NOW that things began to change, when he realized that All Might wasn’t all the things he thought were most important. But still what was most important, what being a hero meant, he still never understood
So he shoved his pride down his throat and asked All Might what it meant to be a hero
It all comes back to the words Shoto once said to Deku, what matters is action
The irony of it all, is that Shoto became the hero he truly wanted

Is Endeavor’s Past Skewed?
I keep seeing posts where people say Endeavor is seeing his past skewed. When we saw the past through Endeavor’s eyes, Touya and Fuyumi were very young.
We can also see when Touya is hunched over on the floor he is much older. This is also backed up by how he mentions Natsuo. Now we don’t know Touya’s age at the moment, but we know Fuyumi and Natsuo are 3 years apart. So this picture below is maybe 10-12?
Its hard to even guess the age since Touya in every picture we’ve seen, looks to be much younger than what he is. Natsuo is taller than him, but Natsuo is also the youngest out of the three.
