#tohru's aunt
the-sage-libriomancer · 6 months
Text
anyway, in regards to this post, i also think Tohru's aunt almost certainly blamed Kyoko for Katsuya's death. he died extremely suddenly, in a hotel room far away from home, and it was the kind of death where there's no one to blame because illness isn't the result of a person's actions the way something like a car accident is. and the thing about blameless deaths is that it makes you want to blame something, anything, especially another person. and when Kyoko died, it would've been almost too easy to shift the blame onto Tohru.
so not only does Tohru have to put up with her aunt unfairly judging her, she's also forced to live with people who use her as a scapegoat for her own father's death - adding more parallels between her and Yuki and Kyo, all of whom were blamed for things they very pointedly were not responsible for and had no control over (and in Kyo's case, it was also related to the death of a parent, strengthening the parallels).

Similarities between two of the sweetest, kindest, beautiful inside-and-out women of anime: Miyo Saimori and Tohru Honda
1. Both come from a family that looks down on them and treats the poorly.
For Miyo, the cruel members are her step-sister, step-mother, and even her father.
For Tohru, it’s her aunt and her cousins. Grandpa is the kindest of all of them.
Tumblr media
2. Despite that, they had mothers who loved them very much. Unfortunately, these mothers died fairly early in their child’s life.
Tumblr media
3. With that loss, they had a special item that played a large role in the remembrance of their mothers.
Tumblr media
4. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they both wind up living in a house that belongs to a stranger.
Tumblr media
5. Both have a personality that tends to win the hearts of all they come across, especially of the family they have become a part of.
Tumblr media
6. These ladies are both amazing cooks, and are happy to make meals for their new “families”. It’s one of their many ways they help out around the house.
Tumblr media
7. Both end up falling in love with a man that can be considered cold, distant, and stubborn at first. You get to know them, and they are the absolute gentleman who truly loves and cares for their woman. They will do whatever it takes to protect her.

Just a quick ficlet for kyoru week 2023 cause I wanted to write something.
8/22 home movies @kyoruweekofficial
It’s more of a kyoru family story. Idk the idea is cute to me lol
“Hey mom, watcha doin’?” The six-year-old questions.
The woman stops wiping the shelf. “Oh, just tidying up.”
“What’s those?” The child points to a set of DVD jackets. “Movies?”
“Sort of, they’re home movies. You know, like when we record videos on our camera? These are of events we like to keep.”
“Can we watch one?”
“Sure. Why don’t you pick?” The child picks a random disc and hands it to their mom. “Oh, this is of my graduation,” the woman reminisces as she pops it into the Blue-Ray player.
They curl up on the couch as the video rolls with mom narrating for the little girl. The video was taken when she graduated from high school and her parents held a big party at the Sohma compound. Many were there, like uncle Mutsuki and his parents uncle Yuki and aunt Machi, uncle Hatsu and aunt Rin with daughters Sora and Riku, even uncle Shiki came considering he wasn’t fond of parties. Of course, aunty Akito and uncle Shigure had to attend as the heads of the clan, but it was nice to see them since they rarely left the compound anymore. She names off the relatives as they appear on camera, often pausing to answer questions because the little girl has never met many of the older generations that have passed on.
“Who’s that next to you and papa Hajime,” the child points at the elderly couple who are standing next to her grandfather.
“That’s grandpa’s parents. They’re your great-grandparents, grandma Tohru and grandpa Kyo.”
“Oh, they look so old, but so cute still holding hands.”
The woman chuckles, “well, they are in their 80s.” She sighs, “I wish you could’ve met them. You look a little like grandma Tohru when she was a young girl.” A bit of moisture clouds her vision as she reminisces. “Lets’ see, grandma passed away about 8 years after this, and your grandpa followed a year later. My parents believed with his heart gone, grandpa didn’t have the will to keep living.”
“That’s impossible,” the child looks up at her mom with concern, “how can a heart just disappear from,” she points to her chest.
“No, not like that.” The woman laughs. “They’re talking about your great-grandmother. Grandma Tohru was his heart. Great-grandpa loved her more than anything else in this world because she saved him from the Sohma monster.”
The child turns to look at her mom again, this time with an indignant glare. “Mom,” she crosses her arms. “A monster, seriously? Monster’s aren’t real so that makes no sense.”
Before responding, the woman pauses the video and pulls her daughter onto her lap. “Have I ever told you the story of the zodiac?” The child shakes her head no. “Do you want to hear it?”
“Yes!” The little girl bounces in excitement.
The mom moves her back to the couch, gets up and goes to another room. She comes back in a couple minutes holding an old wooden box and sits back down next to her daughter. She then opens the lid to show the child the little animal figurines inside, worn with age, but still discernible for what they represent. But there was one odd piece in the box.
“Mom, why’s there a wooden rice ball with a bunch of animals?”
“I’m glad you asked,” the mom talks as she pulls out the figurines of the rice ball and an orange cat, placing it in the little girls cupped hands. “These represent your grandma Tohru,” she points to the rice ball, “and grandpa Kyo,” she points to the cat. “The rest of the animals make up the zodiac.”
The child gives her a mom a confused look which gains a chuckle from her mother.
“Don’t worry, it’ll be explained in the story.” The woman takes the figurines from her daughter, puts them back in the box, and puts the box aside. “Now where should I begin?” She thinks for a moment. “A very long time ago, there was a god…”

Fruits Basket Another Headcanons: Mina Sohma Edition
• Mina Sohma was born via a surrogate to Momiji Sohma (31) and his husband, Megumi Sohma (28)
• Her birthday is April 5th (possibly in 2013-2014 if I did my math right)
• Almost as soon as she was born, Momiji began calling her "Mii" for short, which means "beauty"
• She is one of the youngest Sohma cousins, only being older than her own brother and Hiro & Kisa's youngest daughter
• As a baby, Mina was always looking around, smiling, and giggling
• However, she was not exactly an easy baby. Getting her to sleep at night was extremely difficult, and she'd often get cranky during the day because of it.
• It was a pretty often occurrence that Momiji would come back from the office in the evening to find his husband sitting up in a chair, cradling Mina against his chest
• That seemed to be the only way she would sleep, and it was always in the early afternoons
• Due to their work schedules, Mina was closer to Megumi than Momiji during her early years
• Momiji had to work long hours, and was often gone on business trips. Meanwhile, Megumi was home every day by 4:00, and he was always the one to pick Mina up from daycare
• When Mina was about 3-4, though, Momiji would occasionally bring her to work with him, and Momo would help keep an eye on her. She's always had a wonderful relationship with her aunt because of this.
• She was a very shy toddler, pretty much always clinging onto her parents or her aunts. • She did like most of her older cousins, but Hajime and Mutsuki frightened her when she was very young. Mutsuki was very loud, and Hajime was usually glaring.
• She grew out of this shyness after starting school; now she almost has zero concept of stranger danger
• she visits Hajime and Mutsuki all of the time, too, and Hajime will sometimes take care of her when she is sick
• Age wise, she is closest to Miyoko (Kyo & Tohru's daughter) and Izumi (Hiro & Kisa's oldest daughter), who are both roughly a year older than her
• The three of them have a knack for getting into trouble....and then getting right back out of it because they are so cute
• (Usually, Miyoko & Izumi find the trouble, and Mina just goes along with it)
• Ironically, they're also the three cousins most prone to getting into arguments at family gatherings ("Mina, you go play on one side of the house. Izumi, go to the other. And Miyoko, you go outside.")
• Although they are eight years apart, Mina was always very close to Riku and Sora. They both loved playing with her; Riku has definitely let her paint his nails
• They also both take her to the batting cages; Riku usually just cheers from the sidelines. Sora will bat, but she is comically bad at it, and Mina always laughs about her lack of skill
• She first got into baseball when she was about five. Her fathers had tried getting her into dance first, but she never really enjoyed it. • Still, she's definitely more of a "girly-girl" than a tom-boy
• Aunt Momo is definitely her favorite Sohma adult, but she also really loves Tohru and Rin
• On her other side, she also has Aunt Saki (she definitely thought her aunt and her father were witches, and thought that was the coolest thing ever. She was very upset to find out the she did not possess any powers like theirs) and her cousin Rio
• Rio absolutely loves her; that side of the family was not very big, so she was his first cousin. She loves Rio, too. They make bracelets together.
• Speaking of which, Mina is a jewelry making FIEND. Beads are EVERYWHERE. Both Momiji and Megumi have a necklace that they must wear all of the time because she made it for them.
• Her younger brother, Makoto, was born when she was five years old
• At first, she actually hated being a big sister. She did NOT like that her parents' attention was no longer focused on her. She would refuse to hold or play with her brother most of the time.
• In fact, she would even ask to stay with Aunt Momo just so she wouldn't have to be around him (and so she could be the center of someone's attention)
• It didn't take long, though, for her parents to figure out what was going on, and they had a conversation with her about the change in their family dynamic, but they also made sure to give her equal attention
• Now, she likes having a younger brother, and she's always trying to teach him new things or make funny faces
• Watermelon is her favorite food in the world, but ironically she doesn't really like candy or cakes
• She collects plushies, and Momiji always brings her one back from business trips • What she does like is hot chocolate. When Momiji comes back from a business trip, the two of them always drink hot chocolate together.
• When Mina gets older, she does join the school softball team.
• She does not follow her cousins to Kaibara, though, and actually goes to a very prestigious all girl's school nearby
• Her grades have always been very good, but she does get in trouble sometimes for being unable to sit still or talking out of turn/too loudly
• She has dreams to travel the world before eventually taking over the business of her grandfather and father

I decided to read Fruits Basket Another, and aksjdf I really enjoyed it??
Some highlights (paraphrased because I turned the books back into the library yesterday oops):
Momiji's daughter knows Momo as "Aunt Momo", and Aunt Momo is loved/trusted enough to take care of her while Momiji is overseas, meaning that whatever else happened, Momo and Momiji figured out their relationship and know that they're siblings and care for each other and d'awwwwww
TBH all the second gen kids are really well adjusted? Like, the parents made a real effort to make sure that their children would lack the trauma that they grew up with and it shows!! It worked!! They're just normal kids!
The climax of the new character's emotional journey is acknowledging that she hates her mother (who is emotionally abusive), and she wants to escape as soon as she's old enough, and the second gen Sohma's are like, "yeah, bad family's are a curse. You should totally cut her out as soon as it's safe, you're valid and normal for that," which means that the first gen Sohma's raised their kids with enough love & respect & dignity that they know what their boundaries are, and feel secure enough to enforce them; even if the first gen Sohmas were bound together by a curse and trauma, the second gen kids feel safe rejecting staying with abusive family members because faaaaaaaamily.
Hajime🐱 (Kyo and Tohru's kid) talks about how Kazuma Sohma is his only "real" grandfather and as much as he (tries to) love everyone, fuck his bio grandad. Bless. In this house we believe in Kazuma Sohma supremacy.
Mutsuki🐀 (Yuki and Machi's) kid telling his mom and dad that he loves them and he's happy that they're a family because Yuki and Machi did such a good job of raising their son in a loving household. <3 <3 <3
Hajime🐱 and Mutsuki🐀 are close enough that the main character thinks that they're brothers at first. Awwww.
Hajime🐱, after being compared to a cat: "I'm not a cat, and I definitely don't turn into a cat when hugged."
Just... Hajime🐱. He has Tohru's all loving attitude + Kyo's whole.... Deal. He's also an oldest sibling, and has major Big Brother Friend / Dad Friend energy. At one point he comforts the main character like he would any of his siblings and then immediately runs away, embarrassed. He goes, "Ugh, I guess I'm your big brother now," "No one said you have to-", "no, I have to." Even his initial mistrust of the MC is because of how much he loves his younger family members. (It's plot related, and a little bit of a spoiler), and he apologizes for it. His younger cousins call him "Papa" as a joke because he's That Much of the Dad Cousin. It just cracks me up/makes me sad/happy when you compare how Kyo was treated to how his son is treated.
(Seriously, he comforts the main character, is called out for treating her the same way he would any of his younger siblings and runs away the nerd!)

You wanna infodump you say? Tell me the coolest things about your OC. Your favorite things. Idk just something. Something that makes you happy. Spill the beans.
I did say I should probably pull the bandage off. Most of these things are things I have planned to write out.
I love the idea of Iris being someone from normal standing. Someone that's not to special to the world.
Characters that influence Iris' personality: Priscilla from Fire Emblem, Elsie from The World God Only Knows, Hilda from FE3H, and my aunt irl.
Although not intended, Tohru from Fruits Basket snuck into Iris' personality. Probably due to the nature of her story.
I love that I have Estinien acting as the Lancer (the trope) for Iris.
Tataru and Iris are BFFs
That time Tataru was put to trial against the Heavensward is the first instance of Iris going feral and I'm absolutely happy for her.
She felt that Alphinaud was a bit pushy and possibly trying to hit on her early on in their adventure. She thanks Estinien for helping him grow out of that phase.
Iris enjoys interacting with Urianger, mostly because he always has the most fascinating things to tell over tea.
She respects Thancred even in his playboy days. At least he didn't hit on her too much when she didn't respond to it the first time.
That's all I got for now.

Tohru -- Reading
Tumblr media
Here is another anime fanart of pen and ink with Tohru, reading a book 🥰
This is the 2019's version of Tohru
I watched 2011's Girl Fight and then watched Mean Girls, and they are both good, and here's the thing, bullying to make things better by doing something to make them feel bad gets nowhere to make things better. Unlikely or likely what the girls from Fruits Basket (can't remember their names) who falsely accoused of Tohru taking Yuki away from them and they are jealous. This art has nothing to do with that, maybe, but I did this for fun ^^ and I decided to have a pen and ink without colors lol
And I continued watching Fruits Basket after awhile ^^
Also, tomorrow, me and my fam are going out for pizza with my aunt and cousin before going to my nephew's birthday party, and it'll be fun :3
What y'all think?

Dragon maid: rewritten
Ok i love dragon maid but also the attachment formed in the first place because its the first show i watched where the main couple was not a straight one. And I also really like the characters and *most of* their dynamics, like how tohru, kobayashi and kanna are like found family, takiya and fafnir’s bromance, elma and her food, etc.
However, i hate the weird thing with Shouta and Lucoa? Like he’s a child maam? also i hate the way Kanna feels like a child purposely written to be vaguely sexual like what was that twister episode? why is that the way her and saikawa, TWO YOUNG CHILDREN, are portrayed?? its so weird????? like crushes are normal, whatever they made those kids do was not??
So my solution is I take existing content, filter out the parts I don’t like and just have a different canon version in my head that I like more. lets call this version of it rw!dm (short for rewritten!dragon maid) because im lazy
Essentially, everything in rw!dm is automatically less fanservicey in general, whether it be the character designs, character relationships/dynamics or how certain characters are portrayed.
This means that in rw!dragon, Lucoa and Shouta’s relationship isn’t some weird shotacon master-servant thing anymore, Lucoa is now just an older sister figure / cool aunt figure. (I mean in canon, shouta’s classmates literally think that Lucoa is his older sister, come on now)
Another minor thing I changed is that Kanna now has regular socks instead of whatever she has in the show. Because why would you give a child-coded character thigh highs thats just kinda weird ngl oh and all the weird kanna and saikawa stuff doesn’t exist in this world. (not their relationship itself, mostly just the sus parts that happen in show, you know what i’m talking about) THEY’RE KIDS. mostly still angry about that
That’s about it for now.

i've had dysfunctional Honda family on the brain lately, and i got to thinking about Katsuya's sister—better known as Tohru's bitchy aunt who had no respect for Tohru's boundries and treated her like shit. she and Tohru's cousins are set up as an inconsequential first boss, out of Tohru's life and the story halfway through the first act, and then she's barely in the series ever again. canon-wise there's not really much to be said about her: she's a shrill, selfish woman who's basically a Japanese Karen. there isn't anything more to her character, and in the context of the story there doesn't need to be.
but i just got to thinking—what was she like as a kid? what was it like for her growing up, when she had a strict and uncompromising father, a mother who died when she was a teen/young adult, and an older brother who grew up frustrated and repressed?
Tohru's grandfather said that he and Katsuya were always struggling, with Katsuya striving to meet his father's unfair expectations and Tohru's grandfather (who henceforth is going to be called Toshiro bc i can't keep typing out "Tohru's grandfather") unwilling to accept that his son wasn't the person Toshiro wanted him to be. imagine having to live in a house where your older brother and your father are always fighting, where your brother slowly becomes a different person over the years and your father won't stop pointing out everything that's "wrong" with your brother.
(i think it's also important to note that the story takes place approximately from 1999-2001, which means Toshiro is very firmly from the war generation. that almost certainly influenced his values and approach to life, from the sharp focus on education to how he expected "good etiquette" from his children. and i dunno—not to drag a far bigger can of worms into the mix, but i think there is something to be said about how horrific worldwide cruelty deflates into systematic national cruelty which trickles down into mundane societal cruelty that somehow becomes "just the way things are", which feeds nicely into the series' themes of generational trauma and how people come to normalize abuse.)
we don't know much about the Hondas' domestic life, but we do know this: Toshiro was unhappy with his kids and his kids were unhappy with their father. then the mother died and Toshiro lost what was probably his strongest connection to both of them. Katsuya and Toshiro didn't really get along until after Kyoko came into their lives, which was probably a good several years later. meanwhile, we don't know anything about Toshiro's relationship with his daughter, but clearly there isn't the same kind of bad blood between them as there was Katsuya and Toshiro.
and it's just. Katsuya's sister. his younger sister, the one who grew up beside him. a woman who married a faceless (but respectable) man, who has enough money to take vacations and hire private detectives and completely renovate houses, who looks down on Kyoko and can't stop judging her own brother's child for being raised by an ex-delinquent.
do you ever think about it? how the unnamed sister spent her formulative years in a house that was never at peace. her father was proud and stubborn, clearly not willing to deal with anything other than what HE thought was right. her mother likely tried to play peacekeeper, because that's often what the wife is reduced to in a fight between family members, and who knows what her relationships with her kids were like in the face of that. her brother started out as someone like Tohru, but slowly became a different person as their father's expectations pressured him into walling off entire parts of himself. she constantly heard her father talk derisively about Katsuya for being less than his ideal (maybe even to Katsuya's face). and she clearly comes from a high-status family who have no qualms with being assholes toward "unsavory" family members, if the flashbacks to Katsuya's funeral are anything to go by. every time she met with family—aunts and uncles, grandparents, cousins, in-laws, what have you—she was reminded that you had to marry the right sort of person or you would be openly sneered at, receive no help or support, and be virtually disowned.
do you ever think about how she probably absorbed her father's ideas of an acceptable life because that's all she ever learned to value? how she took cues from her other family members and crafted a respectable persona that they would all approve of? that she possibly dotes on her family and supports her son's dream because she never got any of that love and acceptance for herself? her life is one of a stereotypical upper-middle-class suburban housewife, the kind who's obsessed with status and appearances to the point of becoming a shallow, cruel miniboss in a story about far worse cruelties and far less shallow motivations.
listen. listen. Tohru's aunt is an annoying person but also one that's easy to read. she felt "uneasy" around Kyoko. she wanted her son to succeed in life. she judged Tohru—a sweet girl who had literally never done anything of suspicion in her entire life—solely because of Tohru's parentage. she loved her father. she thought her father would support her in deriding the "distasteful" member of the family and she was wrong. she lost her mother at a young age. she refused to see Kyoko as worthy of respect. she thought Tohru was a delinquent like Kyoko who was shacking up with three strange men, but she still called to inform Tohru of Toshiro's illness and offered to go to the parent-teacher's conference with Tohru. her own father called her and her children "nasty by nature." she is a product of her childhood and also a deeply unpleasant person because she never chooses to extend compassion or kindness to others, much less any inklings of good faith.
and it all drives me a little nuts because Tohru's aunt is decidedly a minor character, and i don't think much thought was put into her characterization or backstory—she's the shitty judgmental family member who's there to be a roadblock for Tohru, and that's it. but the nuggets of information we get on Katsuya's past also creates a path for his sister's backstory, one that points to a quietly dysfunctional family, high pressure to be an acceptable member of society, and other unfortunate circumstances that led her aunt to becoming such a shallow, hardhearted person.
anyway. dysfunctional Honda family is very interesting.

[ID: Four panels from Fruits Basket. The first two are flashbacks to Katsuya's funeral, with the first showing two older woman dressed in black and frowning as they talk over three-year-old Tohru, and the second showing Tohru's grandfather looking at them with a frown of his own. Over these panels, Tohru's grandfather is recounting, "At Katsuya's funeral, some worthless relatives said some worthless things. Things like, "She doesn't look a thing like Katsuya". "Are you sure she's not some other man's child?""
The third panel shows Kyo looking horrified as Tohru's grandfather continues, "I suppose they thought a child... wouldn't understand what they were saying." The fourth shows Tohru's grandfather smiling sadly as he says, "They were being foolish. Of course children understand the things adults say. What a thing to assume." End ID.]
Man, this always hits me like a truck with sheer, unrestrained disgust. Like, what the fuck is wrong with you to talk like this at a funeral? Even context aside, I fucking hate adults who talk over children like they're not really there, or not people who can hear what you're fucking saying about them. Even when children don't understand the exact words you're using, they can clearly tell whether you're praising or insulting them. Even if Tohru's too young to fully understand what these shitty relatives are implying about her mother, she knows that these women don't like her, and it has something to do with not looking like her dad. Given what we see of Tohru's aunt and cousins, it seems like the whole Honda family are deeply unpleasant people, with the exception of her grandfather softening in his old age and her father falling in love with emotional honesty and dedicating himself to making someone honestly happy. They might well have dysfunction to rival the Sohmas, but they don't have relationships with Tohru to help them fix themselves, and that's their own damn fault.

Yeah, yeah. I love you too. No more crying alright. And eat your food.

I will. I promise.
*We kiss one more time before I grab my phone and start a group call with the rest of the girls*
Before I say anything, you are all sworn to secrecy and cannot tell your partners because some of them have big mouths and will not keep this from Katsuki.
Woah. That’s a hell of a way to start a conversation.
Our lips are sealed, bestie. Tell us what’s going on.
I’m pregnant!
*They all gasp and some squeal, mainly Mina, Tohru, and Ochako*
Congratulations, Sapphire. You and Bakugo will be fantastic parents.
Thanks, Momo. I need a really cute way to tell Katsuki but I don’t know how.
Ooh, I know! Get Shadow one of those dog shirts that say #1 Big Brother and have him carry the sonogram picture to Bakugo.
Tohru, you’re a genius!
Yes, my aunt would be more than happy to do a home sonogram so you can get it printed.
Oh, that’s amazing, Momo. Thank you.

got another headcanon just really quick (hope i’m not being annoying with all of the ones i’ve already talked about haha) but as a pretween i can totally see akechi taking french, and somehow adachi is partially fluent in french and this surprises the fuck out of akechi. just a little self-indulgent headcanon for today
Tumblr media
literally this is it. peak interaction. Literally the purest headcanon (which I desperately need after thinking super hard about the teenage goro/student council au within this au)
also thank you so much for your asks, they never fail to make me smile 🥺🥺🥺!!

Fruits Basket Another Headcanons: Hajime Sohma Edition
(Just a few warnings: don't read unless you're okay with a bit of fruits basket spoilers. Also, these kinda go all over the place. This is the first time I've posted something like this, but if people like it, I'll post more. That's all as far as warnings go, there's nothing inappropriate in here as far as I can tell.)
• Tohru and Kyo were both 22 when Hajime was born, and his birthday is January 3rd (based on the math I did, he may have been born in '03 or '04 but I might be wrong)
• He was a very calm and easy baby, but a very rambunctious toddler and young child
• When Hajime was four, he started asking his parents for a sibling, and his younger brother was born when he was six
• He was a fantastic big brother when his little brother was a baby, but by the time he was a toddler and Hajime was 8, he was a little meaner (would steal toys, wanted his brother to stay away from him, etc.)
• The opposite happened with his little sister; she was born during his "siblings are awful" phase, so he didn't like her at all until she was 1 because he had grown out of it by then
• Once Hajime was 10, he was back to being an amazing brother. He just went through a bratty kid phase.
• Ironically enough, after he matured, he was the one who always felt the need to take care of everyone younger than him (which he does very well, albeit a little agressively)
• He took karate from the ages of 4-10; it was fun but it wasn't really his thing
• What is his thing is baking/cooking
• While he was going through his "bratty kid" stage, Tohru thought maybe he was feeling left out by her (which he partially was, tbh. He had karate with his dad, but felt like all his mom's time was spent with his bother)
• So when she would cook dinner or bake treats, Tohru started asking him to come help so they could spend more time together
• It was like the kid was naturally a culinary genius, and when he got old enough to where he was allowed to use the stove/oven without supervision, Hajime started baking for fun
• He also makes his parents breakfast on special occasions
• Growing up, Hajime always denied the fact that Mutsuki was his best friend, but they are 100% best friends
• Well, actually, they're not best friends any more. As of Hajime's third year and Mutsuki's second, they're boyfriends
• When Hajime was in his between his second and third year of middle school, he came out as bi to his parents, and in his first year of high school, he had his first girlfriend
• In all honesty, Kyo and Tohru were more surprised he had any attraction to girls at all. They had always suspected he liked men; when he was really young, he kept insisting he was going to marry Hatsuharu someday
• Turns out, his parents were right. After having a girlfriend, Hajime realized he wasn't actually attracted to girls and came out for a second time as gay
• The girlfriend was a little upset, but overall very supportive and they're still good friends
• It also helped that Hajime made her an apology cake (not that he was sorry for being gay, just that he was sorry for accidentally hurting her in the process of finding himself)
• When he started dating Mutsuki, it was a very awkward conversation to explain to people that no, they weren't actually cousins. They did not share any DNA. Mutsuki did not help Hajime clear it up at all.
• It was even more awkward explaining that to the younger Next Gen Sohmas; one of them cried upon realizing they weren't actually related to the others
• Hajime kind of forced his parents into telling him about the curse; when he was 13, he got really stubborn about wanting to know the story behind the beads that were kept on the shelf. He also asked Kinu and Hibika about it, as well as his aunts and uncles,, but they all said that it wouldn't be right for them to tell him. (Well, Kinu kind of told him, but she just said "oh yeah, our parents used to turn into animals" and Hajime didn't believe her anyway)
• It wasn't like his parents were trying to hide it from him, they just didn't know how to tell him. But just before he went into high school, they decided he was old enough to know the story and told him
• At first, Hajime didn't believe them. He thought they were messing with him.
• After seeing their faces though, he realized they were serious
• It deeply upset him at first, and he actually spent that weekend away from his parents, at Yuki's house
• Out of all the original Sohmas, excluding his parents, Hajime was always closest with Yuki
• He talked through everything with Hajime, all of his questions and concerns and let him say any thought or feeling he had about it all, and by the end of the weekend he was ready to return home
• Hajime gave both of his parents a big hug when he got home, and asked to wear Kyo's beads.
• At first Kyo was reluctant, but he did allow it
• Since then, Hajime has taken deep pride in wearing the beads. He has always loved his parents very much, but learning about their past made him realize just how strong they were
