Fruits Basket Another Headcanons: Mina Sohma Edition

• Mina Sohma was born via a surrogate to Momiji Sohma (31) and his husband, Megumi Sohma (28)

• Her birthday is April 5th (possibly in 2013-2014 if I did my math right)

• Almost as soon as she was born, Momiji began calling her "Mii" for short, which means "beauty"

• She is one of the youngest Sohma cousins, only being older than her own brother and Hiro & Kisa's youngest daughter

• As a baby, Mina was always looking around, smiling, and giggling

• However, she was not exactly an easy baby. Getting her to sleep at night was extremely difficult, and she'd often get cranky during the day because of it.

• It was a pretty often occurrence that Momiji would come back from the office in the evening to find his husband sitting up in a chair, cradling Mina against his chest

• That seemed to be the only way she would sleep, and it was always in the early afternoons

• Due to their work schedules, Mina was closer to Megumi than Momiji during her early years

• Momiji had to work long hours, and was often gone on business trips. Meanwhile, Megumi was home every day by 4:00, and he was always the one to pick Mina up from daycare

• When Mina was about 3-4, though, Momiji would occasionally bring her to work with him, and Momo would help keep an eye on her. She's always had a wonderful relationship with her aunt because of this.

• She was a very shy toddler, pretty much always clinging onto her parents or her aunts. • She did like most of her older cousins, but Hajime and Mutsuki frightened her when she was very young. Mutsuki was very loud, and Hajime was usually glaring.

• She grew out of this shyness after starting school; now she almost has zero concept of stranger danger

• she visits Hajime and Mutsuki all of the time, too, and Hajime will sometimes take care of her when she is sick

• Age wise, she is closest to Miyoko (Kyo & Tohru's daughter) and Izumi (Hiro & Kisa's oldest daughter), who are both roughly a year older than her

• The three of them have a knack for getting into trouble....and then getting right back out of it because they are so cute

• (Usually, Miyoko & Izumi find the trouble, and Mina just goes along with it)

• Ironically, they're also the three cousins most prone to getting into arguments at family gatherings ("Mina, you go play on one side of the house. Izumi, go to the other. And Miyoko, you go outside.")

• Although they are eight years apart, Mina was always very close to Riku and Sora. They both loved playing with her; Riku has definitely let her paint his nails

• They also both take her to the batting cages; Riku usually just cheers from the sidelines. Sora will bat, but she is comically bad at it, and Mina always laughs about her lack of skill

• She first got into baseball when she was about five. Her fathers had tried getting her into dance first, but she never really enjoyed it. • Still, she's definitely more of a "girly-girl" than a tom-boy

• Aunt Momo is definitely her favorite Sohma adult, but she also really loves Tohru and Rin

• On her other side, she also has Aunt Saki (she definitely thought her aunt and her father were witches, and thought that was the coolest thing ever. She was very upset to find out the she did not possess any powers like theirs) and her cousin Rio

• Rio absolutely loves her; that side of the family was not very big, so she was his first cousin. She loves Rio, too. They make bracelets together.

• Speaking of which, Mina is a jewelry making FIEND. Beads are EVERYWHERE. Both Momiji and Megumi have a necklace that they must wear all of the time because she made it for them.

• Her younger brother, Makoto, was born when she was five years old

• At first, she actually hated being a big sister. She did NOT like that her parents' attention was no longer focused on her. She would refuse to hold or play with her brother most of the time.

• In fact, she would even ask to stay with Aunt Momo just so she wouldn't have to be around him (and so she could be the center of someone's attention)

• It didn't take long, though, for her parents to figure out what was going on, and they had a conversation with her about the change in their family dynamic, but they also made sure to give her equal attention

• Now, she likes having a younger brother, and she's always trying to teach him new things or make funny faces

• Watermelon is her favorite food in the world, but ironically she doesn't really like candy or cakes

• She collects plushies, and Momiji always brings her one back from business trips • What she does like is hot chocolate. When Momiji comes back from a business trip, the two of them always drink hot chocolate together.

• When Mina gets older, she does join the school softball team.

• She does not follow her cousins to Kaibara, though, and actually goes to a very prestigious all girl's school nearby

“Fruits Basket” is a nice slice-of-life, melodramatic series that’s a good source of comfort when one’s down in the dumps or going through a hard time. The 2019 anime reboot, that stays true to the original manga series, is like a review of what I find endearing about the manga when I’d read it to the end a ways back. It’s heartwarming how Tohru Honda found belonging and acceptance among the Sohmas and reached their hearts. Yuki, Kyo and Rin (Isuzu) are some interesting characters that can be personally relatable in their own struggles.

Basically everyone in Fruits Basket, but specifically the Sohma family

Synopsis: "The series tells the story of Tohru Honda, an orphan girl who, after meeting Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Sohma, learns that thirteen members of the Sohma family are possessed by the animals of the Chinese zodiac and are cursed to turn into their animal forms if they embrace anyone of the opposite sex."

It will take too long to unpack all the trauma here, so in short:

Fruits Basket is one big, giant metaphor on Generational Trauma and its ripple effects that grow increasingly worse as the cycle continues and everyone pictured here is severely Traumatized, even if they were lucky enough to have amazing parents, friends, support group, etc.

How Kyo and his story can be related to trans(even lgbt+) themes

In this we’ll look at how the curse can be literal and metaphorical, how Kyo’s story can be tied to trans, even just queer representation, and what it means for us as kinnies or just a fandom.

~the curse(literally is a generational curse)

examples of generational curses:

-Family beliefs/traditions can put pressure on children and when they get their own family it can cause religious or family trauma

•Akito’s father kept repeating that Akito was going to be like this and do this and be loved by everyone. This put Akito on a pedestal and put a huge burden on her shoulders. This caused a strain within his family. Later on putting an even thinner strain on the extended family.

•Akito grew up believing that she was solely important, that no one else was to be a priority. Which in turn made the zodiacs feel trapped rather than loved.

-Abusive parents can lead to future abusive parents. When a parent or parents are abusive, the child or children will either grow up bitter or abusive to their future partner(s) and/or children, thinking that this is the best way.

•Akito’s mother was jealous of someone who was too small to understand everything to properly raise her. She often put her down and even try to fight/kill her when Akito got older. Akito’s mother never had motherly care so Akito grew up alone and bitter. Eventually because of that lack of care and love, she would often display bipolar/manipulative tendencies.

->The whole Sohma family was raised around a religious trauma curse that also tied into an abusive one as well. While having to deal with a literal curse they had two, three, maybe even seven tied with it as well. Taught that being the way they are was wrong, that no one would love them or their animal forms. Which brings us to the Cat and its curse.

~ We know that the Cat is the only one with two forms. The sweet little cat and its monster form that was giant and disgusting smelling, marking it as scary and dangerous. Only because the rest saw it as something awful, because the story was twisted. Kyo and those before him had to wear a bracelet to keep it hidden. Like how most trans/lgbt+ youth(even adults) hide behind a mask or “typical”’ gendered activities, clothes, personalities. Girls did this and boys would do that and all of those twisted words.

•all of us if not most of us were taught and told that being lgbt+ was wrong. That it was disgusting or against nature. If a parent(s) found out they would often even try to hide it or try to say you were to stop thinking that way or else. So we put on our own bracelets and walked on hiding and hating this side of ourselves.

->Kyo(us) wanted to fit in, to have a place to belong so bad that he(we) were willing to even take it out on someone(something) else. How come I’m the bad guy? Why did I have to be the Cat? Why does this straight person get to do this? Why can’t I be normal? But we all were. Me, you, Kyo, we were normal, they just didn’t know how to love something they didn’t understand. Now not everyone was like this. Deep down a lot of the sohma’s wanted to just be free(like how Kyo almost seemed to be in their eyes) or did just love him(like his adopted father and Tohru, even Kagura mostly). We had at least someone love us. We all had at least one Tohru, or a Kagura, or even a Kazuma.

*I can relate to Kyo so much because I also felt like an outcast. I felt like I had to hide and hate who I was so people would love and care for me. I even got mad at my own family sometimes. How come certain people would do this or that for someone but not me just because I was lgbt+? Why did that matter so much? I was still that math loving, anime watching, book reading goofball that they grew up with. I hated myself more and I even tried to reject how I felt. Then I met a Tohru. Someone who came from love and care who saw the best of me. Even when I transformed and got angry(Like Kyo when his bracelet was taken off and he changed) she/he/they chased after me and held me and stayed. She/he/they accepted all of me.

•A lot of the characters in this anime could be metaphors or examples of real life traumas and experiences. Like Rin and her eating disorder or Momiji and his sister getting separated. Even Yuki and his depression, anxiety, health complications. I think that’s why a lot of us love it and watch it over and over and over again. We can all feel for a character or two. So even if you feel like you are alone, remember that there is a Tohru out there for you. I promise😘
