Grandpa Honda: “Some nasty relatives said some nasty things. ‘She doesn’t look a bit like Katsuya,’ they said. ‘Are you even sure that she’s his? Such a child won’t be of any comfort at all. What a pity!’”
Kyo, who knew what it was like being treated like crap since childhood:

Similarities between two of the sweetest, kindest, beautiful inside-and-out women of anime: Miyo Saimori and Tohru Honda
1. Both come from a family that looks down on them and treats the poorly.
For Miyo, the cruel members are her step-sister, step-mother, and even her father.
For Tohru, it’s her aunt and her cousins. Grandpa is the kindest of all of them.
Tumblr media
2. Despite that, they had mothers who loved them very much. Unfortunately, these mothers died fairly early in their child’s life.
Tumblr media
3. With that loss, they had a special item that played a large role in the remembrance of their mothers.
Tumblr media
4. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they both wind up living in a house that belongs to a stranger.
Tumblr media
5. Both have a personality that tends to win the hearts of all they come across, especially of the family they have become a part of.
Tumblr media
6. These ladies are both amazing cooks, and are happy to make meals for their new “families”. It’s one of their many ways they help out around the house.
Tumblr media
7. Both end up falling in love with a man that can be considered cold, distant, and stubborn at first. You get to know them, and they are the absolute gentleman who truly loves and cares for their woman. They will do whatever it takes to protect her.

Was thinking about how it turned out Battle City meant everyone had to go to an island for a weekend when no one besides Kaiba was really planning on being gone for multiple days and therefore some phone calls maybe needed to have happened. I have concluded the following:
Honda's parents were fine with it
Otogi's dad was fine with it
Jou's dad did not notice he was gone
Anzu texted her mom "going to a concert with Miho this weekend in case you forgot <3 see you Sunday night" and got a read receipt
Grandpa was, obviously, fine with it
Dadkura showed up at the hospital that night saying "What do you mean, he left?" before someone pointed to the TV

Puzzleship role-reversal AU following Egyptian boy Atem who transfered schools to Japan because of his father's job. As a son of a busy, high political figure, Atem constantly changes schools and have very little friends aside from Mahad and Mana who are the children of his father's close colleagues. (The other kids also got scared of him because his father is a powerful figure / only attempting to befriend him to gain benefits).
Atem grew up with strict lessons and pressure. Always have to be the best in everything. He always tried to maintain an aloof, cool-headed, always reliable leader persona, but in truth he's very shy and anxious. His only comfort was playing games, but it's very lonely to play alone (and he's not so fond of online games) (Mahad and Mana play with him but Mahad is older and doesn't have time to play childish games with him and Mana has other interests)
Atem had changed schools a lot, but it's the first time he moved overseas. He didn't know anyone in Japan and only spoke the language a limited amount (even tho his lessons back in Egypt always drilled the language into his brain but with no one to talk to it's pretty hard).
He instantly became The Talk at Domino High as "The cute/cool foreign transfer student from Egypt" and he didn't really like the attention. He became closed-off and only interact with his classmates a minimal amount, even tho he had always wanted to make more friends. (Now people thought he got a Mean Look, because of the frown 😂). Anzu was the first person who greeted him in good-faith because she purely wanted to get to know him and make him feel accepted in class (but he always brushed her off too). Jou and Honda are still part of The Delinquents(TM) and Jou just hated Atem's guts because he thought Atem is "snobby little Rich Kid". Kaiba is still Kaiba and he just Doesn't Care much.
One day, Atem got some free time and decided to visit a nearby game store: Kame Game. It's kind-of old and there's more board games and puzzle games instead of the ever-popular digital ones. But this is how Atem loves his games. (And there's always a weekly little tournament where kids can play Card Games against each other. Very Fun!).
When he came in, the store was empty and dark, but the store still has the "Open" sign at the door so Atem just kept going. There sits an open wooden box with silver carvings on one of the small table where kids play. Atem was intrigued to get closer and he saw some... wooden blocks. Maybe a Puzzle? Atem loves solving puzzles. Because this is just left alone on the play table, it means he can try it right? So he tried Solving it...
And as if the Puzzle itself was calling and urging him to Solve it... he's assembling it very smoothly. He can finally see that it's forming some kind of pendant, just a few more blocks but Grandpa Sugoroku suddenly appears and surprised him 😂 Gramps saw him with the Puzzle/Pendant and you know I really like the idea of him Knowing More than he lets on, he told Atem that this Puzzle was an artifact from The Gods' Time and whoever solved it will get a Wish come true. He urged Atem to take it home and solve it in peace. It might help you in some way, he told him.
So Atem brought The Puzzle home, thinking how that grampa was kind of Weird, but he's also intrigued with the Puzzle- so he's going to solve it. And a wish coming true doesn't sound bad at all...
Atem had solved it Perfectly, and it was a pendant. But nothing happens. Ha! What wish... Atem thought it's probably just Sugoroku's attempt to make him come back to the store and buy something. Atem was kind of Sad tho. But nevermind that, he got a new pendant now, so he wear it immediately and went to sleep. (Having strange Dreams about Storms and a boy with white robes and wearing The Pendant Facing Them... but he's not going to dwell with it- he must be Tired)

Hassel and Baxcalibur Analysis
This has been bugging me for a while, and I won’t be surprised if there’s already a post like this. But Hassel’s eyes are so interesting! There are several shots that specifically zoom in on his eyes
Tumblr media
His eyes are incredibly detailed compared to the average Pokémon eyes; the ombré effect is very stunning. Fiery, almost. It fits well with the background of his skills. Even though he’s a lovable, emotional art grandpa, there’s power that goes generations back. But I can’t help but notice his Baxcalibur, the leader of his team in the Elite Four battle.
Tumblr media
The eye markings and color are remarkably similar! I don’t know if there’s a deeper significance or if it’s a design choice to connect these two together; but the eyes were the first sign of a deliberate connection between Hassel and Baxcalibur, and I find this rabbit hole to be quite interesting!
The TCG cards for the Baxcalibur line really stunned me, in the best way possible!
Tumblr media
These cards are gorgeous! They’ve been outdoing themselves with the card art. I don’t know what these cards could be referencing, but they seem to be very abstract and artistic. Perhaps something else connect Baxcalibur and Hassel together?
What really intrigued me was Hassel’s connection to “royalty.”
Tumblr media
His Friendship Quest reveals that he came from a long line of prestigious Dragon-type Trainers. He was supposed to be the next head of the family, but he ran away from this pre-chosen ‘destiny.’ He is the heir, so to speak.
Tumblr media
In all of his battles, Hassel makes more references to royalty. He refers to himself as ‘a dragon,’ and later says that only a dragon deserves a throne. When he terastallizes his Baxcalibur in the E4 battle, he refers to the Tera Jewel as a ‘crown.’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking as Baxcalibur’s name, it is a reference to Excalibur, a legendary sword in Arthurian legend. It is said that the one who wields the sword will become the great king of Britain, which in the legends, was King Arthur. Seeing the deliberate connection between Baxcalibur and Hassel, it seems like Hassel was supposed to be this ‘King Arthur’ of his family. He was supposed to lead his family to greatness.
The Japanese name for Baxcalibur (Seglaive) also intrigued me. Seglaive seems to be derived from ‘glaive,’ a European polearm weapon. I thought I reached a dead end with this one, as I couldn’t find anything interesting with glaives. But then looking into it, the polearm subclass of weapons used to be fashioned from farming equipment. Looking at it, it really is a stick with a knife on the end. Due to this, it was the preferred weapon of farmers and in peasant rebellions. Hassel’s storyline is literally rebelling against his inheritance because it’s not his dream.
(Edit: I want to think this is a purposeful connection, because Baxcalibur’s back spines look nothing like a glaive or gladius xD maybe I’m on to something)
Tumblr media
This last point may be a stretch (but when is it not when it comes to me haha) but Baxcalibur seems to be inspired by kaiju, strange beasts in Japanese media. Kaiju are often humanoid in shape and stand upright because a human needs to fit inside the kaiju costume. The first kaiju film is considered to be 1954’s Godzilla, directed by Ishirō Honda. Godzilla is known to be the King of the Monsters.
I think some sort of metaphor can come out of this, with Hassel’s family trying to force him into the role of the Dragon-type heir, as if the role was a kaiju costume.
Tumblr media
Haha I went farther down the rabbit hole than I expected; this was initially supposed to be about the eyes! Seriously though, I’m a huge defender of how much love was put into this game, and it’s a shame that it was rushed. These characters have a lot of depth. I definitely stretched some points, but I think some of this still holds water. There’s a deliberate connection between Baxcalibur and Hassel, and I hope to see more of them in the upcoming DLCs! ^_^

Imagine being Honda the day after the Pegasus vhs tape duel. You come in all excited to talk with your friends about the tournament since you had to babysit last night and they’re like “yeah grandpa’s soul is in the vhs because other Yuugi lost a duel :-/“ like the fomo must have been unmatched… so much context missing… layers of lore incomprehensible… also grandpa is talking to you in the camcorder screen.

I just made this up after seeing your post on dub and sub names
*ahem*
Joey Wheeler is Katsuya Jonouchi's Americansona
Tristan Taylor is the same for Hiroto Honda
They decided to do the same for Anzu, and that's why they keep calling her Tea
They even got Grandpa Muto in on it
Yugi declined, and they also couldn't figure out a good name for him that didn't feel weird, so he stayed Yugi
PERFECTION.
I'm not the biggest dm fan in the world, it just kinda didn't give me brainworms like the other shows did, but I still love the cast and want to include them in fics/headcanons. They're all WEIRDOS. Friendgroup consisting of a goth/punk gnome of a highschooler, dancer with kindness in her heart and muscle in her thighs, ex-gang member who listens to radiohead and wears secondhand denim jackets, his bff, and occasionally their ttrpg guy who keeps accidentally trapping them in death games and collects haunted dolls.
Katsuya "Call me Joey" Jonouchi the america kabure and Honda joins in because it's funny and he likes doing stuff with his friend, Anzu sometimes complains and pretends she doesn't like The Bit but in that friend way where everyone knows she is absolutely in on The Bit.
I love the headcanon that Bakura re-learned japanese out of a textbook and that's why he uses stilted almost-archaic high formality for everyone, because he's out of touch with the Social Rules of the language and just sticks to the guaranteed least offensive option. He does not remember When It Is Acceptable To Go To First Name Basis and doesn't share his first name with any of them until they've been friends for years. This is based solely on the joke in the abridged dub where Bakura says his first name is Ryou and no one knows who that is.
As such, he escapes the American-ization ray because it is inconceivable to any of them that Bakura could be called by any name other than Bakura.

as a venti-liker i want to hear from the other side
what is the appeal of grandpa? what's great about zhong li? sell him to me like he's a used honda civic
ah now This guy. this guy is great. very very relatable to today's millennial just trying to get by on pennies and crumbs. not a single mora to his name! he does not have even a coin for retirement, but he makes the best with what few joys he can sort-of afford. just leave him alone at a table with a pot of hot leaf water and a podcast and he'll be entertained for hours.
since he's got a lot of miles on him it's important you go easy on em. it's not that he's fragile, he just might try and pretend to be dead to get out of his obligations. i cannot fault him. i'd do the same damn thing. if you ask he'll probably take ibuprofen and have a nap with you.
now this model does not, unfortunately, come with the Fursona Upgrade, but we can throw in a hand-painted fan to make up for it. may not be a real dragon, but the art is sure damn pretty!
Tumblr media
//// but in all seriousness i just like serious, tragic-origin-story old men who like to sit quietly, contemplate mortality, and drink tea while also being a walking encyclopedia of miscellaneous trivia. gives me a very specific case of gender envy that just so happens to coincide with a lot of my own personal thoughts and hobbies. also like... that's a whole dragon. what's not to love about that.

Kaiba made death-T just for Yugi I imagine the plan was torture grandpa for a bit to then get him to get to the Lazer tag game and have him fry to death and in the unlikely chance he didn't then the murder house is right there he won't even get to touch a deck of cards to duel he will die ez. It's the fact that jou demanded he play alongside Yugi AND that Honda was in the crowd +Anzu being there to work on the game, like the power of friendship is literally being shoved down our throats here, Yugis chances of survival on death-T aren't very high, idk I just like thinking on what kaibas thought process was, death-T is kinda insane already and there's FOUR people playing. The plan was for Yugi to go alone I'm p sure. Even if the Lazer tag was a 3v3 and there was 4 places for hands to get stuck in the murder mansion. What if Yugi was alone and he stuck his hand in the wrong one before hearing all the rules? I'm imagining stuff
