The State Department on Friday said it is pausing additional funding for the UN Palestinian refugee agency after Israel alleged 12 UNRWA employees were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack.[...]
"This was strong and corroborated intelligence," the official said. "A lot of the intelligence is a result of interrogations of militants who were arrested during the Oct. 7 attack."
"interrogations" huh. Sounds familiar. [26 Jan 24]

it's actually hysterical for her to try and bring up 9-11 as a comparison, is if any leftist in the us is like "yay for the iraq war! it was wonderful and just and we support our government for starting it!"
i am proud of you for standing up to her and also proud of you for giving up and just cutting all ties :))))
yeah omg. and you know what, i actually unblocked her for a second to go through our dm's again and one bit that i didn't entirely screenshot is just so........hm
anyway so i copied the text and here ya go
"Regarding 9/11, I mentioned it as an example of an act that is, in itself, clear cut. I said things around it can be debated, but the event itself is clear, and it is EVIL. I don't care what excuse people come up with (and I have seen people on Tiktok trying to use anti-Israel sentiments Bin Laden expressed to justify his actions, while also conveniently skipping the part where he claims Jews control everything, so yay for siding with an antisemitic terrorist just because he once wrote a letter, after the fact, blaming the Jewish state for everything), what al-Qaeda did to almost 3,000 people was HORRENDOUS and MORALLY DESPICABLE, and to me there is no discussion to be had there, and I am in a state of shock that there are people who would justify it. That said, 9/11 is not like Oct 7. And I do not mean to belittle the pain and horror of 9/11 one bit. I watched the footage, I cried over the people killed that day. But there are several ways in which Oct 7 impacted Israel in a far worse way than 9/11 did the US. First, in terms of the percent of the population affected directly. Based on recent demographic info that in Israel we have 9.8 m people, and based on Google telling me there are 331 million Americans, then 1,200 murdered in Israel is akin to over 40,500 Americans. That's roughly 13.5 times 9/11. Now also take into consideration that Israel is much smaller than the US. We're talking about a state the size of Rhode Island. There is basically NO Israeli that hasn't been impacted by this in some way. And that's before we talk about the wounded (over 5,000 on Oct 7 alone) and those who are still held hostage, and the soldiers who keep getting injured and killed in Gaza. Now add to that, that unlike al-Qaeda operating from the other side of the world, Hamas is on the other side of a border, that they proved is indefensible. Now add to that that the attacks on Israel haven't stopped since Oct 7. It took several days to eliminate all the terrorists who invaded Israel. It took the ground operation in Gaza (weeks into the start of the war) for Hamas to stop trying to use the over 30 points where it destroyed the border fence on Oct 7 (and which could not be repaired right away) to invade again, or to land boats on our southern Mediterranean Sea beach, Zikim. And they also keep firing rockets at us. Each rocket is a murder attempt of civilians. Each one is a war crime. And there have been so many rockets fired into Israel, I lost count after 10,000 which was about a month into the war. We're now at almost 3 months. For Americans, 9/11 was one day. For us, Oct 7 never hasn't stopped yet. The worst was the first 36 hours, but it's still an on going attack. Now you wanna debate whether the Americans reacted right to the attack? I don't know the subject well enough to debate it, which is also why you won't see me reblogging posts either way. Because when I'm uninformed about something, and I also know I do not have the resources (even just emotionally) to properly dig in and understand all of the nuance and history and consequences behind each aspect, I do not speak up as if I did understand everything, and have any moral right to make judgments about the people who were there, and lived through it. Maybe they were in the right, maybe they were in the wrong, IDK. I honestly don't know, and I readily admit I do not have the resources to delve in to find out. But two things I can day is that, assuming they did dismantle al-Qaeda, even if it took a while, Americans didn't have to live with the fear of what those terrorists were capable of pulling off next. Israeliis have lived with Hamas' terrorism since the late 1980's, with its rockets since 2001, with it ruling Gaza since 2007, and we didn't dismantle it. Which means we all have to live with the guilt over how many lives could have been saved, if only we dismantled Hamas at an earlier point. Less Israelis would have died. Maybe less Gazan civilians as well, since Hamas wouldn't have had as long to embed itself into every civilians structure in Gaza, and to arm itself so much.
anyway the vibe i was constantly getting from her was 'this is the pain olympics on whose death was more horrendous or which country had the most casualties' regardless of my entire point being that people should not be killed. full stop. like you'd think that was hard to grasp or something.

Kikuchi-san’s book, partial translations
Akira Kikuchi is the trainer who accompanied Yuzu to many competitions in the past.  Since elementary school days, Yuzu has gone to his clinic in Sendai for therapy sessions after skate practice.  Last year (2019), Kikuchi-san published a book titled 'Strongly, beautifully, 30 Methods to train' (my translation from the Japanese title).   I read a Chinese translation of some parts.  Very interesting to see things from his perspective, and quite touching too, so I decided to translate them to share.  Not ideal to translate from another translation but I don't have the book, and usually Chinese fans' translations are pretty reliable.
*paraphrased means I summarised a few lines there.   *more info means I added notes for myself, and it's not from the book.
Chapter 1, part 5.  The muscles that were forged after the earthquake.
He became the World Junior champion, and also started school at Tohoku High School,  and at the age of 15, Yuzuru made his debut in senior level competition.  His 1st competition was Season 2010-11 NHK Trophy in Oct where he landed his 1st quad jump in competition and was in 4th place.   2010 Nov was Cup of Russia in Moscow, where he placed 7th. (more info: Japan nationals in Dec, he placed 4th.  Then 4CC in Feb 2011, he placed 2nd.)
At the end of his first senior season, the Great East Japan Earthquake happened.  (March 2011)
When the earthquake occurred, I was working, seeing 4 patients.  My home and clinic felt the shaking but were not damaged due to being on higher ground.  But very quickly, the electricity, water and gas were cut off.
[paraphrased:  Everyone was worried but preferred to stay on.]   I continued treating the 4 patients.  When they left, I closed the clinic temporarily.
Soon, people whose homes were washed away in the tsunami or destroyed by the quake took refuge in nearby sports halls.  When I heard about this, I brought a simple bed into the sports halls and did massages for the  people there.  That was how I spent each day.
The reason I did this was because I thought of my father that night after the earthquake.  He was a policeman and was very strict with himself.   He was upright and always thinking of the safety of others.  He lived his life for others and he is the man that I most respect.  If father was here, he would definitely go to the evacuation centres to do his best to help......
Giving a massage to people at the centre, I was just doing the only thing I could do.
Yuzuru also went through some hard days.
On the day of the earthquake, he went to his usual training rink 'Ice Rink Sendai' after school.   It was at the rink that he experienced the "shindo 6"  earthquake.  (More info: shindo 7 is the highest.  See this: robintlewis/what-is-the-japanese-seismic-intensity-shindo-scale.   On the Richter scale, this is a magnitude 9 earthquake.)
That child felt the strong shaking and I heard that he rushed out of the building wearing his skate boots.  Next to life itself, the most precious thing is his skates.  Figure skaters always put skate guards on the blades when they leave the ice, they would never let the blades be exposed.  Rushing out without his skate guards, he must have been very scared.
Staying 4 days in the gym of a school which served as an evacuation centre, he seriously thought about whether he should give up figure skating.
It was also figure skating that made him pull himself together.
His home rink was damaged in the quake and he lost his usual training place. His coach during elementary school days, Tsuzuki Shoichiro, inquired about him.  Tsuzuki-sensei is the one who gave Yuzuru his foundation in figure skating.  Before the quake, he was coaching at a rink in Yokohama.
Subsequently, Yuzuru went to Tsuzuki-sensei's rink to train.
About half a year after the quake, around October, Yuzuru who had returned to Sendai came to my clinic.  He told me about what he had been doing.
During that period, he was participating in commercial ice shows and earthquake charity ice shows all over Japan;  I knew about this.  "For the people affected by the disaster, I want to give them some encouragement," I had read his interviews in the newspapers.  In the 5 months after the earthquake, he skated in 60 ice shows throughout the  country.  "I hope that my activities can become strength for the victims"-- to have this thought, he must have pulled himself together.
"When I participated in ice shows, I could do some training if I arrived early at the venue, and the intervals between shows also became my own training time," said Yuzuru, looking straight into my eyes.  (more info: usually there are a few shows at one venue, eg. 3 shows spread over the weekend)
After such an unprecedented earthquake disaster, what had Yuzuru learned, mentally how had he changed, all these I was not sure.  But the moment I touched his leg muscles, I immediately felt his efforts and I almost cried.
Since elementary school, I had been seeing him almost everyday.  Even a small change in his body I would know.
The muscles forged after the earthquake told of days filled with harsh figure skate training, day after day.
Skating in ice shows "for the disaster areas", and practising fervently in between shows.  During the performances, he must have also put in all his efforts so as to "convey something to the people".
Moreover, the muscles developed after the quake were not only those used for jumping, they were also those for bearing the impact of landing.
Landing on the ice after a jump, the impact on the body can be a few hundred times the skater's weight.  To withstand such an impact, the muscles around the knees, the gastrocnemius muscles in the calf and the tibialis anterior muscles must be sufficiently trained.  If these parts are not strengthened, injury will happen easily.
In a short period of half a year, those muscles grew to such an extent.   How much jump practice did he do after the earthquake.  Falling down countless times and getting up again.  How on earth did he train to develop muscles like that.
Yuzuru's leg muscles are different from other athletes that come to my clinic. His muscles were not developed by specialised muscle training but were formed naturally though figure skating practice.  In other words, they are muscles that grew only for figure skating.
Until now, that child still mentions that he "does not know how to ride a bicycle".  In my opinion, I think it is because he does not want to develop muscles except those needed for figure skating.
The muscles used for cycling are the same as those for speed skating.  Speed skaters have cycling in summer training;  bulging leg muscles are necessary for them. For figure skaters, if muscles become big and bulging, the weight can be a hindrance to jumping.  But still, strong muscles are needed to do quad jumps and to bear the impact of landing. [paraphrased]
Yuzuru overcame the earthquake disaster and developed muscles for jumping quads and for bearing the landing impact in a good balance.
Those well-trained leg muscles are the external manifestation of his experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake and his determination to fight as a top skater.

Chapter 1, part 6. Overcoming pain in the hip joint
The first time I went along with Yuzuru in the team for a competition was in his 2nd year of senior level, the November 2011 Rostelecom Cup (Russia) in the Grand Prix series.  Traveling with a team to an international competition as a trainer, it was the first time for me.  Not only that, it was also my first time watching a figure skating competition up close.  What a disgraceful old man. Almost everyday I listened to Yuzuru talk about all things related to figure skating but I had never watched his competitions live at the venue.
I saw Yuzuru only at my clinic, diagnosing leg problems, applying tape to stabilise ankles, this kind of interactions, the relationship of a therapist and a patient, I felt this was enough.
I had the role of a 'sports trainer' before, but not for professional  athletes. Supporting local high school and junior high students, I was already very content.  I had served as 'team trainer' for the swimming, baseball, and track and field teams of Tohoku High and Junior High Schools where sports is very popular, and went with the athletes for competitions.
Once these children graduated, the relationship between trainer and athlete would end.  Those who wanted to continue their sports career, some would leave Sendai, some would get a professional trainer to guide them.
"Rostelecom Cup is going to start, Sensei, can you go together with me as my trainer?" Yuzuru asked me.  I answered in a relaxed manner, "Oh, alright."
As an athlete, Yuzuru was steadily rising.
"Whether it's an international competition or the Olympics, let me be your trainer and take me along!"  This was what I said to him jokingly when he was in elementary school grade 4;  I don't know if he still remembers it.  But this kind of joke has really come true now, so I was actually feeling rather emotional.
This was also like a commendation from Yuzuru for the treatment he had received so far.  "Well, it's just doing the physiotherapy in Russia instead of the usual place in my clinic," this was how I thought at that time.
However, at that Rostelecom Cup, at the official practice, Yuzuru injured his hip joint (the joint between hip bone and thigh bone).
The injury was treated by a trainer sent specially by Japan Skate Federation.   I was just Yuzuru's private trainer.
I understood the situation fully when we were back in his hotel room.  The treatment for the injury had ended but the pain was still there.  I was very sure that it was not suitable for him to do more skating.  Even walking would be painful.
"In this situation, it's better to withdraw (from competition), isn't it?"   When he heard this, he said with absolute certainty, "Whatever happens, I will compete in Rostelecom Cup."  Actually for this competition, Yuzuru must win first place in order to qualify for the Grand Prix Final which is for only the top 6 skaters of the GP series.  He wanted to compete, no matter what.
From that moment, I felt for the first time that I have "joined forces with an extraordinary world".  Yuzuru was so focused on the competition, "want to compete", "want to win", these desires were way above any pain.  As a therapist, of course my advice was to withdraw.  But as a trainer, I had to respond to such intense wishes of the athlete.
All I could do was to take care of his hip joint.  I also taped his ankle, and then sent him off to compete.  I knew the pain of the injury was still there.
But, Yuzuru, he did it....... short programme and free skating both were ranked 2nd, but his total score of 241.66 was higher than other strong rivals like Javier Fernandez and Jeremy Abbott, and he achieved his first victory in the GP series.
At that moment, witnessing it with my own eyes, I was crying.  Even though he received treatment, his hip joint injury was quite serious.  Any jump would be very painful, especially when landing, he would feel severe  pain.  In spite of this, for the free skate, he made a mistake only for the quad jump, the other 7 jumps were all successful.
For the first time, I realised it was such a cruel world that Yuzuru was fighting in.
In the spectator stands were many Japanese ladies and they were looking at me with a surprised expression "why is this old grandpa crying so much??"  But it did not matter anymore, I did not care how others were looking at me, I was crying my heart out.  I was so happy..... really so happy.
That Rostelecom Cup was my first experience as a trainer stepping into the figure skating world.
After this, I did not accompany Yuzuru to any more competitions.  I stayed in my clinic treating patients, and sometimes I would treat Yuzuru who came back from travels.
After Rostelecom Cup, Yuzuru rose rapidly at an astonishing speed.
For the GP Final, he was 4th, then at 2011-12 World Championships, it was his first time at Worlds and he achieved 3rd place.  At the age of 17 years and 3 months, he broke the record for the youngest World Championship medalist in Japanese figure skating men's history and ascended to the podium.
Then, from April 2012, Yuzuru moved his training base from Sendai to Toronto, Canada.
Before he had overseas competitions, I saw him almost everyday at my clinic. We had been together for the past 10 years.  So I would miss him quite a lot.
But it's for becoming stronger that he went to Canada.  For greater improvement in figure skating, he made the decision to move to Toronto.  He has already "graduated" from my place here.
"Sensei, I'm going off!"
And just like each overseas trip, Yuzuru set off from Sendai, and started on another journey.

HI ILLINOIS GET YO SHIT TOGETHER K THANKS
(i was gonna tell the story in tags but actually no here we fucking go under a read more bc ho boy I’m teed off)
So in the past two months I have had to take an Illinois toll road a total of 4 times. Same road, there n back. (between Madison and Indy. On a side note, fuck that gas station in Beloit that jacks up the price by 20-50 cents bc they’re right before the toll road. ahem. anyhoot)
And so toll road says “Hey! Pay your fuckin tolls within 14 days!”
And I’m like “uuuuuugh hassle but ok” and within 14 days of the first 2 trips I go online to try and pay it.
Now, in the time since the last time I used this toll road and had to pay online (like, a year), they went from an honor system of “put in where you got on and off and here’s the toll, pay it and be done” to “Hey, we recorded your car going through, put in your details and we’ll bill you :)”
Me: okay..... *does so*
Illinois Toll Shit: *does nothing with this info for over a fuckin month*
Cue ~a month later
Illinois Toll Shit: Hey your card’s been declined :)
Me: ....... WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN I LITERALLY JUST USED IT IT’S FINE (side note: I am still using that same card. It’s fine. Idk wtf their deal is)
Well, I update my card and..... can you guess what happened next?
If you guessed abso-fuckin-lutely nothing, congrats! you win...... idk the prize of knowing how fuckin stupid the Illinois toll system is
Fast forward another 2 trips on this same road. I now have a total of 4 unpaid tolls that I have no idea how to pay. By this point, I’m honestly like “fuck it, I’ve done my best, it’s on y’all now. If you don’t want my money that’s not my problem.”
But, not wanting the chance of getting arrested in Illinois, I go on tonight to check and see if anything is happening.
To find two random transactions with absolutely no details. Just “Hey we’re taking ~7 dollars okay? okay :)”
Me: ....... TELL ME WHAT YOU’RE DOING BITCHES
turns out. They finally registered my fucking tolls. Which, okay, cool! Fine, now I don’t have to worry about getting pulled over for tolls I’ve tried to pay!
But the bullshit does not end here folks, oh no.
So a quick summary of dates, bc fuck it idc about people knowing my travel plans retroactively: 1st toll: Oct 8 2nd: Oct 10 3rd: Nov 24 4th: Nov 28
Now, a reasonable way of billing these would be “two october dates together, two november dates together”. Actually, the most sensible would be all together at once (like how they finally fuckin showed up on my account, but I digress), but I’ll give them some leeway here.
But no. You wanna know how these fuckers decided to split it up?
3 tolls in one charge, 1 toll in another.
...... they’re gotdamned lucky they don’t charge a processing fee bc I would be hella pissed if they did.
Not only that (this is less annoying and more “wtf are y’all doing???”), but for some reason. They decided to process the 3 tolls at 2 in the fucking morning. And then the 1 toll at about 1pm the same day. Y’all. Are you fucking okay
(if the state of their toll website/how long it took me to pay is any indicator, abso-fuckin-lutely not)
So yeah! Illinois get your shit together! Or at least take down the anxiety-inducing “PAY IN 14 DAYS OR ELSE” signs bc it took y’all over two fucking months to process my gotdamned tolls.
ffs

NYCC Panel Summary
Now that I’m finally home after a very long and very fun day at the SVTFOE panel (among other things) at NYCC, I’m gonna type up a summary from the notes I took. Note that some stuff is missing, I’m not gonna go into detail about every little thing; this is just what I found most important/interesting. Italics is my commentary on it. Bold is most important/new information. Not in any particular chronological order from the panel.
-Originally Ludo was going to pretend to be a student at Echo Creek Academy. She showed a bunch of her old sketches, most of which I’m told have been put online before but this one is supposedly brand new. Go birb boi go.
Tumblr media
-Daron always liked doing character-first writing, and the other stuff was figured out afterwards. No shit sherlock, maybe more people should hear this.
-As most people know, the original concept for SVTFOE had Star as a 4th grader who believed she was magical but it wasn’t real. The new piece of info, kinda, is that when the direction shifted towards Star being older and being magic, this is what led to Marco having as much importance as he does. Hmm I wonder why.
-Star and Marco are “such good friends” -Daron Nefcy, Oct 7, 2018. Sure Daron, sure. That’s all they are.
-Dominic Bisignano built the scenes that Janna has in Mewberty which led to her becoming a more major recurring character. Also Janna’s personality and last name were “borrowed” from one of Daron’s friends. Dom is the best, as usual.
-Daron sees a lot of herself in Star, and a lot of her husband in Marco. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
-The writers draft up 2-3 page outlines and give them to the storyboarders who get to actually make the episode in full (including dialogue, scenes, etc) over 6 weeks. Daron personally checks in a few times during that process to make sure it’s all gelling with their concepts. I always knew one of the show’s strengths was that it was board-driven while the writers still maintained pretty tight control over the broader narrative, but it’s nice to have some more concrete info for this.
-When asked about hardest eps to make, she mentioned animating crowds was tricky. Writing-wise, eps with tons of deep history/lore require more effort, and eps without the Star/Marco dynamic are hard because that dynamic is very reliable/sturdy. HMM IT’S ALMOST LIKE THAT’S A CORNERSTONE OF THE SHOW GUYS. If I have one regret about the panel it’s that I couldn’t ask a followup about how they felt writing so much of S3 with them apart. Clearly the distance was intentional to the story, but I wonder if they felt it would be as rough as it came across to the viewers.
-Daron has been involved in the writing of every single episode, the creation of every character, and selection of all of the voice actors. Neat.
-Patrick Stump actually contacted Disney about doing some sort of voice acting work on his own, and the casting director contacted Daron since Daron was looking for someone for the part of Ruberiot to sing a rock opera. She actually wasn’t totally sure right away, so Stump volunteered to audition, and did. He got the part. Shocker.
-Daron wrote the parts for Skywynne, Festivia, Crescenta, Estrella (well, drew), and a lot of Glossayrck in the Book of Spells. Amber and Dom split the rest. Also, Daron made all of Festivia’s tweets fit the character limit for Twitter, but that changed in editing. Stupid editors, ruining attention to detail.
-Dom actually tested all the pie recipes in the book of spells.
-Daron was bummed that the internet deciphered Low Mewnian so easily.
-Some details in the book were changed along the way last minute to connect to Season 4 content. Eclipsa will personally use some of her spells in the book (and will be very involved in S4 overall), and we’ll enjoy season 4 much more if we’ve read the book, apparently. Cool.
-They’re still hard at work on the show, and producing about an episode per week supposedly? Obviously she doesn’t mean a full episode is completely finished per week, because otherwise all of S4 would be done in a month or two.
-When asked about Tom, Daron said that he always had potential to be more than just the angry ex and that Rider’s performance was a part of that. She didn’t really give many specifics there and just reiterated that she did character-first writing after that.
-The 650 dollars running joke was just a random thing inserted in Goblin Dogs and they scrambled to make an explanation for it later, thus tricking us into thinking she is a wizard of foreshadowing.
-Daron’s approach to balancing comedy and seriousness is that the characters themselves should be more lighthearted and funny, so they can be lights even in dark situations. Which works except when they’re super depressed for most of the season. Not that comedy was ABSENT from S3, but it still just felt way heavier all around.
-Daron doesn’t really receive any pushback on political stuff in the show, but probably mainly because it’s all fantasy. They can get away with a lot when unrealistic character types are involved and can get really allegorical. For instance, she is not allowed to have a character punch another human character in the face, but with unicorns it’s totally fine. Season 4 montage of Ponyhead being used as a punching bag for Marco’s workout routine CONFIRMED. Star will eagerly watch him work out shirtless.
And of course the clip.

#NRLGF | Jack Wighton scores Canberra’s first try of the 2019 NRL grand final.
Not a lot to shout about in the half-time stats. Both teams have high completion rates, low error counts, and, crucially, just one line-break apiece.
Individually, Waerea-Hargreaves is the first and only man to pass 100m with ball in hand. He’s also the only man with more than eight carries.

Big miss there from Mitchell. Canberra right in this. Looked like they were struggling at 8-0, but wow these Raiders don’t give in. Great contest, love the intensity#NRLGrandFinal

Half-time: Roosters 8-6 Raiders
Mitchell drags his left-footed penalty from the right touchline wide and there’s just two points separating the sides at the interval.

20m ago05:24
40 mins: Roosters 8-6 Raiders: The Roosters take no risks with their final set of the half until Cronk kicks high to the right corner. Canberra claim the bomb but there’s a whistle – a well-spotted penalty against Croker for obstructing Morris. Mitchell will kick after the siren…
22m ago05:22
38 mins: Roosters 8-6 Raiders: Ill discipline from the Roosters gifts Canberra good field position. For the first time tonight Nicoll-Klokstad has a look but the Roosters hold him up despite a fierce burst. The ball gets shuffled left and Croker is then inches away from snaffling a teasing kick. This is turning into a fair old end-to-end ding-dong.
24m ago05:20
36 mins: Roosters 8-6 Raiders: It’s been all Sydney since the Raiders scored, and another set in Raiders territory almost led to tries to Tupou and Mitchell down the left before desperate defence – led by Croker – keeps them at bay and forces the turnover. That felt like an important passage of play for Canberra. They withstood a fierce burst from a stung Sydney and they remain standing.
27m ago05:18
33 mins: Roosters 8-6 Raiders: The Raiders handover possession cheaply about 10m out from their own line early in the set following the restart. Can the Roosters capitalise? No – they don’t fall far short but Keary’s grubber is tipped out of harm’s way with Cordner circling.
30m ago05:15
Conversion! (Croker, 32) Roosters 8-6 Raiders
Croker adds a couple more points and it is game on at ANZ Stadium.
30m ago05:14
TRY! (Wighton, 30) Roosters 8-4 Raiders
And from that set the Raiders score their opening try of the grand final. After a long spell of Raiders pressure the Roosters finally started to look fatigued and Wighton took a couple of steps off his left to profit from that uncertainty. It was coming.

30 mins: Roosters 8-0 Raiders: Mitchell kicks this time after a lacklustre set from the Roosters. The Raiders might just be getting the upper hand in close now. Can they find some inspiration with ball in hand? Hodgson tries, then Sezer, but there are no gaps in the Roosters defence. Wighton has to kick but this time the Roosters spill the bomb into the corner and the Raiders get another set…
34m ago05:10
29 mins: Roosters 8-0 Raiders: Another solid set from the Roosters sees JWH become the first man to carry for over 100m for the night. The Raiders respond positively but again decent field position ends without much adventure and the bomb to the corner is accepted by the Roosters without fanfare.
FacebookTwitter
36m ago05:08
27 mins: Roosters 8-0 Raiders: A rare Raiders offload deep in their own half creates some broken play. From the resulting tackle – the third of the set – Hodgson kicks deep into the left corner and Morris lets it roll out for the scrum.
39m ago05:06
25 mins: Roosters 8-0 Raiders: Canberra get deep into Roosters territory before they get another set following a Sydney hand interfering with the play-the-ball. They can’t capitalise though because this awesome tricolour wall is smothering everything in every direction and eventually it forces an error. It is hard to see how the Raiders are going to get through tonight.
40m ago05:04
23 mins: Roosters 8-0 Raiders: First proper handling error of the night from the Roosters and it’s that man Radley, fresh from a whack on the face, he drops the ball in a straightforward passage of play. He immediately exits the game for a HIA and we all scratch our heads at the treatment of concussion and head injuries in professional sport.
42m ago05:02
Penalty! (Mitchell, 21) Roosters 8-0 Raiders
The Roosters extend their lead with a penalty from 35m out directly in front after Tapine’s swinging arm caught Radley’s nose in a poorly executed tackle.
45m ago05:00
19 mins: Roosters 6-0 Raiders: Another safe Roosters set ends with Cronk kicking from halfway. The highlight of the passage was a solid tackle on Cordner that shook captain Chook. The Raiders pack aren’t hitting the line as hard as their Roosters counterparts, meaning the halfback kicking game is much more conservative, allowing Tedesco, Tupou and Morris plenty of time to pouch and counterattack.
47m ago04:57
17 mins: Roosters 6-0 Raiders: Tedesco makes his first decent metres of the night to set up field position for Cronk to launch an almighty Garryowen that almost comes back Sydney’s side. Canberra survive and we’re back into forward exchanges down the centre of the pitch.
49m ago04:56
15 mins: Roosters 6-0 Raiders: The Raiders have the luxury of a full set within striking distance but the Roosters defence is intimidatingly good. There is no chink in the armour with holes being plugged in the middle and runners covered left and right. A limp attack ends with a grubber deflected out of play off a green hand.
FacebookTwitter
51m ago04:54
14 mins: Roosters 6-0 Raiders: The Roosters gain little ground on their set allowing the Raiders, backed by a vociferous crowd, to launch another attack. Their set ends with Wighton again going to his boot but he’s stopped illegally in his chase and Canberra get a penalty in a dangerous area.
Bad news for the Roosters with Aubusson limping off in the hands of trainers with what looks to be a left knee injury.
FacebookTwitter
53m ago04:51
12 mins: Roosters 6-0 Raiders: First decent attacking territory for the Raiders following that penalty. Papalii and Hodgson drive them forward then Wighton kicks unexpectedly on tackle four, the ball claimed in the air near the left corner but possession can’t be recycled back with enough space to cross.
FacebookTwitter
1h ago04:49
10 mins: Roosters 6-0 Raiders The Raiders can’t catch a break. The Roosters are on the attack straight away from the restart, helped by an infringement at the play-the-ball handing them repeat sets. It’s nearly seven minutes between possession for the Raiders and when they do get their hands on the ball it’s on their own try line. They do finally get a respite when a third defender flops on the prone carrier and concedes a very sloppy penalty.

TRY! (Verills, 7) Roosters 4-0 Raiders
The Roosters have just been coming and coming since the start of their second set and finally the green wall is pierced by Sam Verrills. Sydney’s halves probed one way then the other eventually settling on the right flank before Verrills spotted a gap and dived just to the side of the uprights.

5 mins: Roosters 0-0 Raiders: From that set-piece the Roosters snipe on both edges before Cordner scrambles his way towards the line but he’s held up on his back. From the next play Keary tests the Raiders with a nice bomb that ends with a line drop-out. The Roosters making the early running.

4 mins: Roosters 0-0 Raiders: The first incident of the night arrives towards the end of the Roosters’ second set. Keary is late on his kick and it’s charged down by the head of Soliola. The ball ricochets at speed downfield but strikes the Roosters’ trainer! It all ends with a Sydney scrum.

2 mins: Roosters 0-0 Raiders: Solid opening set from the Roosters. Waerea-Hargreaves took the first carry, of course, then the fifth, bulldozing his way down the middle of the field. The Raiders regained possession 30m out from their own line and kept ball in hand safely to establish a foothold before kicking high to Tedesco. Safe and sound from both sides early doors.

Roosters XVII
Two changes for the Roosters from the squad that downed the Storm, one expected, one a significant late surprise.
The big call is the last-minute inclusion of Jake Friend on the interchange bench. The hooker and co-captain has only featured five times this season and has recently been battling a calf strain following a long absence with a fractured arm. Zane Tetevano is the unlucky man to miss out.
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is the other inclusion following his preliminary final suspension. He starts ahead of Siosiua Taukeiaho with Lindsay Collins missing out altogether.
1. James Tedesco, 2. Daniel Tupou, 3. Latrell Mitchell, 4. Joseph Manu, 5. Brett Morris, 6. Luke Keary, 7. Cooper Cronk, 8. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, 9. Sam Verrills, 10. Isaac Liu, 11. Boyd Cordner (c), 12. Mitchell Aubusson, 13. Victor Radley, 14. Angus Crichton, 15. Zane Tetevano, 16. Nat Butcher, 17. Siosiua Taukeiaho

Canberra have won the toss and they will kick-off tonight.
It’s a warm dry night in Sydney with temperatures in the low 20s. The northerly that’s currently skipping across ANZ Stadium will die down during the game.

Preamble
Hello everybody and welcome to live set-by-set coverage of the 2019 NRL grand final between the Sydney Roosters and Canberra Raiders from ANZ Stadium. The action is scheduled to get underway sometime after 7.30pm.
We should be in for a closely fought contest tonight between two of the standout sides of 2019. They have both beaten the minor premiers Melbourne Storm this finals campaign, the Raiders doing so at AAMI Park three weeks ago to turbocharge their pursuit of the Provan-Summons Trophy. It’s 25 years since they were last on this grandest of stages so the Green Machine are arriving with nothing to lose, and plenty of sentimental support.
By contrast the Roosters are old hands at this NRL grand final lark. This is their eighth since the turn of the millennium and as defending champions they’re bidding to go back-to-back for the first time in a generation.
It’s second vs fourth from the regular season ladder with the Roosters holding the upper hand. They also won both the head-to-head match-ups this year but by margins of just six and four points. It’s clear who the favourites should be, but grand finals have a habit of upsetting the form book.
