What To Watch Tonight - The 2022 Series Edition

What a year! Some might complain we had more choices (too much?!) than ever but if this means we have the opportunity to watch a wide range of projects representing a diversity of people and genres, who are we to whine about something that does no wrong? Well, I guess this was also the year of FOMO and goodbyes since so many shows ended or got canceled… So we might as well enjoy the abundance of choices of series, miniseries, and other “made-for-TV” while we can as the future might look a little less generous.

So let’s celebrate and reminisce about some of those we liked this past year that brought us unadulterated joy when we needed it, got us SO emotionally invested and EMOTIONAL, pleasantly occupied our time in the background while maybe-doing-some-light-activity;), they were perfect for when we were bored/sick/relaxing/avoiding “extreme weather events” inside, they were here for us when we needed some fun cheering or a change of perspective, taught us a thing a two, and definitely entertained us to the max - and pluses and beyond!

BEST OF THE BEST

ANDOR

10/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

Well, this is definitely one of those rare flawless shows.

Sure it helps that this was one of this year's STAR WARS series and prequel to *The best* film ROGUE ONE and manage to keep the same unsettling, exhilarating, grounded yet powerful same vibe, and that intensity hitting at the perfect moment.

And of course, it was visual marvel bringing multiple Best episodes of the year(the end of that first Adani blinding bringing us to the sky, the INTENSE final, to the escape from Alcatraz Narkina 5... )

This show excelled in every aspect from banging sound and score (they introduced house music, and a marching band with RE-INVENTED INSTRUMENTS so people could lose losing their minds on Twitter accordingly) We also had as expected incredible special and practical effects, grandiose scenes, and a production design that makes you want to go back to some scene to appreciate all the little details and easter-egg in the background. On top of that, the costumes were probably some of the best ever seen in the series, from the space-chic cocktail dresses to the fashionable impeccable authoritarian uniform, or the creative outfit with wild fabrics and edgy elements, the out-of-this-world yet looking realistic and practical enough that we can just picture ourselves casually wearing them... Enough to say that every single cast member, including extras, was making some serious fashion statement!

ANDOR got it all but obviously the storytelling and direction thanks to CREATOR Tony Gilroy back from ROGUE ONE and all other formidable collaborators and crews, but last but not least the pitch-perfect cast - including the secondary characters - delivered “Oscar-winning” monologues after monologues from the like of Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O'Reilly, Fiona Shaw, Andy Serkis... With so many quotable lines combo best deliveries… and timing... “Never more than 12”...

HOUSE OF DRAGONS

9.5/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

Ah yes, the BIGGEST show of the year that hopefully, everyone watched religiously every year.

This GAME OF THRONE prequel might have outdone itself despite being focused on fewer (non-male) characters, stories, and locations. Yet the feeling of returning to something we all cherished was incomparable. Much virtual ink has been spilled on this one so we do not need to tell you how everyone in the cast deserves laurels for best performance, or how some DRAMATIC scenes (mostly involving swords and/or blood) stayed with us long after the episodes aired, or how the tales transported us to Westorosi lands and made us google way too many nonsenses about GOT “history” or fam-theories and so forth...

But part of its charm was also undoubtedly the post-watch parties on social media with all the reactions and memes - so many memes - for years to come!

ATLANTA

9.75/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

What a time to be alive indeed! This is what we told ourselves at the end of each episode (scenes!) of this last season of ATLANTA. The show we will definitely miss the most forever.

Sure last season was…A TRIP (to casually racist EUROPE lol!) but each entry of season 4 was wild wild rides unlike anything else out there and switched between styles, genres, and storylines...

But most importantly ATLANTA not only brought us the most incredible episode of the year but maybe the best ever with 'The Goof Who Sat by the Door'!

To talk about it would be to spoil the reason why it is so perfect but let's say every intrigued viewer was bewildered from the first second, jaws dropped to the floor, and we kept asking ourselves "WTF I am watching right now!"

(then probably followed by multiple “Oh Sh!!!!!iiittttt”!)

This was simply the most genuinely hilarious Brilliant and perfectly executed mockumentary or anything we had the pleasure to screen in 2022. So was ATLANTA as a whole.

It was a little touch of magic, fun, nostalgia, and philosophy every week, making us think and rethink various concepts and ourselves and we will now forever wonder if it was all real or a dream, and we are left with memories AND so many questions left unanswered ...

BETTER CALL SAUL

9/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

Another show we had to bid a sad sad farewell to... and this one hurts really bad since it was so bittersweet and many of us “grew up”(at any stage of life!) with those characters for more than 10 years…

This show, although using formulas from its sequel/prequel BREAKING BAD reinvented the wheel and was groundbreaking in its own way, with perfect editing, musical cue, props and costumes, entertaining writing, menacing characters, relatable deeply flawed (murderous/criminal) individuals topped by shenanigans and mindblowing plotting with accompanied montages that will forever be seared in our brain.

We will miss Saul and all the beautifully executed scams by some of the most oddly bonkerz characters and we will miss the underrated Rhea Seehorn and all the other actors with their tour-de-force performances...

EUPHORIA

8.5/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

Ha yes, it had to be here as not only was it a grandiose season but it was definitely one of the buzziest show/pop culture events of the year (with HOD) Returning for a second season even more unbelievable in every way than its predecessor. The show managed to be even CRAZIER and more bold, with incredible chases (mostly while high), tense dramatic scenes worthy of the most dramatic drama, uncomfortable yet powerful meltdowns, and crises, and important moments appropriate for teens, YA, and adults of all ages alike, hilarious youngster shenanigans (also while high), but also a full-on high-school Broadway production basically recapping the show…Very meta!

EUPHORIA aesthetic is surely here to stay representing a very distinct period of our era but its appeal is wider as it is equally style and substance. It is the sort of immersive show that makes you want to tune in every week! (Yes it would have been the most binged show if it was avail in full tho!)

Now, not sure how they can top all the coming-of-age/adulting foolish beguiling nonsense, and that rebellious teenage spirit attitude next!

RESERVATION DOGS

8.75/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

We talked about this show last year but this is another case of sophomore season topping it up while staying authentic and fresh.

RESERVATION DOGS is one of those rare shows managing to be a true dramedy, with scenes that will make you chuckle non-stop and others that will make you want to ball out... Sadly, it took so long for this sort of show to be on our screens but anyone can see that the uniqueness of the narratives offered has such a universal appeal.

Powerful scenes delivered by a cast that “live “ their characters, bleeding facts into great storytelling sublimed by the perfect wicked sense of humor and a heavy dose of surrealism, this is our kind of show!

*Although we had a few projects with a strong indigenous presence this year we can only hope this will become the norm.

PACHINKO

8.75/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

An epic tale about a Korean family fighting for its survival and success generation after generation. This series spanning decades set in Korea during the Japanese occupation, then in Japan, is a feat of cinematography and certainly a masterpiece.

Every episode looked like an Oscar-winning best picture, it was crafted with so much care and all actors elevated the already sweeping and potent material to new heights.

PACHINKO was a cinephile treat like no other...

THE BEAR

7.5/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Imagine the intensity of BOILING POINT in a series that you can binge in one go because you did not know any better!

THE BEAR made everyone who worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry justice, but also made some of us so glad we are not part of this special gratifying yet hellish work environment!

Despite being low-key and quite short it manages to bring the heat and make a mighty impact.

PEAKY BLINDERS

8/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another show we wish we did not have to say goodbye to but hey at least we got a movie coming our way!

The aesthetic, the mood, the brooding, the FACKING AMAZING cast, the costume, the scenery, the sets, the darkness of it all... It haunted our screen masterfully

FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL

8.25/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A mini-series not for the faint-of-heart but of the utmost importance. Some might say it was too soon, but we can appreciate it even more now, particularly after these few years of pandemic and climate-change-related catastrophes. This show about helpers and all its heartbreaking complications is not one to overlook.

(Also not to overlook the incredible FX work and chaos of the set recreation of flooding)

THIS IS GOING TO HURT

7.75/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Would make for the most miserable double-watch if coupled with the previous, but this show is indeed one that'll hurt you if you care about the state of the healthcare system, may it be in the UK or elsewhere as it says a lot about societies and nowadays life at large.

FOR ALL MANKIND 7.4/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We slept on this show for wayyy too long but for every space fan, history fan out there this will be the most fascinating show.

WESTWORLD 7.5/10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I guess we also have to say goodbye to WESTWORLD. Despite the many changes and twists no other show will ever be able to replicate the viewing experience and effect, it had on so many...

Harry Styles review: Singer uses power of positivity to delight Brixton Academy

Towards the end of his One Night Only set at London's O2 Academy Brixton on Tuesday, his first UK concert in four years and the first British outing for his acclaimed new album Harry's House, Harry Styles spotted an 18-year-old called Jess in the crowd.

I had chatted to her just before the gig started, as intrigued as Styles by what she was holding.

"Jess's sign," he declared to the 5,000-strong audience, "says, and I might paraphrase, 'My boyfriend slept with my best friend'."

Cue loud boos, a chorus of solidarity from the mainly female crowd, most of whom have followed him since his One Direction days.

"That's brutal," he told Jess, to screams of delight. "What I will say is, you're better off without him, clearly."

The audience went wild, Styles dedicated his next song to her - a mellow, acoustic track called Boyfriends - and, for one night only, the student and part-time supermarket worker became the most envied, and most celebrated, woman in the place.

That interaction sums up why Styles is so beloved.

He's the male friend every woman wants, the one who's on your side. His USP - aside from his zeitgeisty challenge to gender norms and obvious good looks - is emotional intelligence. Unlike boyfriends, who, as the lyrics to his song of the same name go, "think you're so easy, they take you for granted, they don't know they're just misunderstanding you".

Harry's House is his third solo album, and the one he's described as "the most me". It also may be the one where his appeal finally catches up with his media profile in terms of sales.d

The synth-infused, nostalgic As It Was became America's most streamed single in a day, with 8.3 million streams, when it launched in April - and he may clinch the top three spots in the UK singles charts later this week.

You could say he's the first top-league solo male pop star the UK has produced since Ed Sheeran.

The album has only been out for a few days, but as he skipped and strutted from side to side across the stage, in front of an outline of a giant neon house and a six-piece band (again majority female), Styles was confident that this crowd would already know the lyrics by heart.

They didn't let him down, as again and again he directed the microphone their way. There was relish in their rendition of the slightly risque last line of the poppy, joyful Cinema. "I bring the pop to the cinema," he sang. "You pop when we get intimate," they trilled back.

Styles has been touring since he was 17, first with One Direction and now alone - and he's good at it. In Brixton, he was enjoying himself at the start of a tour that will take him to stadiums across the UK before more concerts in Europe and the US.

But this is not rock 'n' roll as we once knew it.

In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Styles said he doesn't drink alcohol while on the road and sleeps for between 10 and 12 hours a night. A pin-up for more sober times.

He also shared that the months he spent locked down in Los Angeles and London during the pandemic were the longest he's been in one place in 12 years. (His family have previously talked about how he went to the X Factor audition aged 16, became a part of One Direction and "never came home again".)

His message after Covid, he told the Brixton crowd, was: "We go out and be nice to each other. Be kind, the world needs it." But in some ways, the pandemic may have brought some relief and space for reflection after 12 tumultuous and hectic years - and it shows in this joyful, thoughtful album.

Aside from pop, Styles has the fashion crowd bought in. Sequins, feather boas, cowboy hats and polka dot dresses - he has worn them all. For this one-off special in Brixton, though, he opted for white trousers and a spotty T-shirt. But many of his fans had dressed up. Pink abounded. Twenty-three-year-old Abi Kohen described her sparkly outfit to me as "like a disco ball had a baby with an emu that was pink".

She and her friend Georgia May-Campbell, who live in London, have spent thousands of pounds on tickets to five Styles concerts through the summer, with outfits already planned for each one. They met training to be nannies, bonded over their love of One Direction and have already seen Styles in concert more than 20 times.

Even more dedicated were the fans who turned up at the Academy a full two days before the gig. Simona Todissco, 28, arrived at midday on Sunday with her friend Marika Candiotti, who'd travelled from Manchester (others told me they'd come from south Wales, Spain, Glasgow, Colchester, Lowestoft and Norway). Tents weren't allowed in the streets of Brixton, but a local woman took pity on the pair and gave them some blankets as the rain poured down.

That's the kindness Harry Styles was after, which he delivered on stage too. I lost count of the number of times he said thank you to the audience. He dedicated Love of My Life, the tender final track of his album, to "each and every one of you". And he stopped the gig twice, after noticing a fan getting into distress in the sweaty scrum.

He is so polite - a pop star to make his mum proud. (She was at the gig and introduced to huge cheers.) But his appeal lies in his authenticity.

North Londoner Gavin welled up as he explained to me how Harry had made his anxious teenage daughter "whole again" with his positive messaging. "Like Bowie taught me about sexuality and it being OK," he said, "he's made a big contribution."

Styles brought the night to a crescendo with the rock-filled Kiwi from his debut album, and Jess left on a high, still brandishing her Boyfriend sign aloft, but less devastated by her ex's betrayal after that pep talk from her hero.

"He said I don't need him," she told me. "And if I'm going to take advice from anyone, it will be Harry Styles."

So,,, the Met Gala

As we've all learned these past few hours/days/years/time doesn't exist, celebrities don't actually know how to follow met gala themes. Naturally then, this year has been a disaster.

Am I a fashion student? no. Did I watch the mat gala? absolutely not. Am I going to judge the outfits I find from the gala (from that one totally comprehensive Buzzfeed article (don't be mean))? for sure.

So first, let's go over what the theme actually was.

The "gilded age" is a phrase coined, I believe, by Mark Twain to describe the way in which many rich people during the 1870 - 1900s used their excessive wealth to distract from social and economic issues faced by, y'know, normal people.

Given that, the fashion of the era was as follows:

(top left to bottom right, Vogue covers from 1896, 1893, 1894, and 1895)

The main or most notable features across the board are:

sleeves; whether big or structured, they're very present

hats; the 90's marked the popularization of hats! big hats!

silhouettes; silhouettes became more varied, as sports gained prominence in American culture and, y'know, they had a lot going on

I think, with that sort of background information, we can get started on judging the actual clothing of the met gala.

The way I'll be judging these is by going through some of the outfits that *I* think fit the theme or an aspect of it, and why. Obviously, this is just my opinion so please don't get offended??

These are my favourites of this year:

(Sorry about the formatting, I wanted to make sure that both of Lively's looks were shown because I think they work together so perfectly that my heart couldn't bear to separate them)

Black Lively:

I don't think there's anything I really have to say about this. Like, just look at it. I personally feel as though this is a really amazing modernized version of the clothing present in the "gilded age" period -- the silhouette contains a bustle-like section in the initial copper outfit, and the colouring is reminiscent of historical American achievements, like Lady Liberty. She never misses. 9/10

David Harbour:

Forgive me, I can't find any solo photos of Harbour from the gala. Personally, I think this take on a tux is pretty great -- although it might feel more late 1910's men's fashion, that may be due to the general immutability of masculine fashion through the ages. That said, the tailcoat, the brooch, the top hat, and the cane really cement this as a good base-level gilded-age inspired met outfit. Could more have been done? yes. Is it one of the best male outfits in this years' lineup, theme-considering? yes. 7/10

Yahya Abdul Manteen II:

Again, male fashion is typically really boring at the met but this is what I meant when I said that Harbour's outfit could be just a little more. I think this perfectly blends the class of male gilded age fashion, while also taking it just a little bit farther in typical met gala ... well... fashion. 8/10

Ariana DeBose and Jeremy Scott:

Now, alone I don't think that either of these fits really fit the theme -- DeBose's silhouette seems too modern to me, while Scott has far too many embellishments to fit into gilded age society. Together, however, I think the perfectly work as a modern depiction of gilded age extravagance because of these modern inconsistencies. 7/10

Megan Thee Stallion:

The shoulders. The colour. The silhouette of the dress. Yes, yes, yes. This dress is so extravagant, so stunning, and yet still harkens to many features present in gilded age clothing, I think. While it's not a perfect depiction or interpretation, I do think that it sticks to the theme in a way that is not limiting and still allows a general understanding of what the theme actually was. Also, the feathers on the shoulder piece may be a classy reference to the presence of feathers in (the aforementioned but not shown) wild hats of the period, just again modified to fit into modern aesthetics. 8/10

Billie Eilish:

People are going absolutely mental over this fit and while yes, I agree, it Is the most to-theme of all those in this year's met gala, I'm not the biggest fan. That said, the bustle piece is stunning, and colour wise it keeps to many of the day-wear trends (from what I know). The lace is a nice feature that hints at the aesthetic period present in the later 1800's. My one complaint is, as with Harbour, this should have been almost a base-level fit that was built off of stylistically. 8/10

Anyway, thanks for joining me on this brief little rant about the outfits I liked the most from the gala I have no interest in -- obviously this is just a basic overview of my thoughts, but hey, I've wasted enough of both your and my time. Hope ya'll enjoyed.
