"don't post links to pirate sites" as a security through obscurity strategy seems... weak. if a pirate site is so obscure that almost nobody can find it, it's also essentially pointless.
but yes, if a pirate site is common knowledge, the feds will be working on destroying it. so the idea is i assume to achieve an intermediate level of obscurity, where you have to have a certain amount of talent for asking the right people or searching the right things to find it. but... whatever capacity for research you are asking people to have on that front, the feds are equally capable of it, and they have a whole lot more time on their hands for tracking down pirate sites! security through obscurity is a losing game for piracy. the perfect sweet spot where people can find your pirate resource but the feds cannot is something of a mirage.
if not that, than what?
the current piracy system involves a few different tiers of accessibility, and various components that are more or less decentralised.
torrents are the most resilient tech because to stamp out a torrent (with DHT enabled) you have to suppress every seed. so, you have big public torrent trackers like TPB; these are well known and rely on hopping domains and redundancy for security. the ratio of seeds to leeches tends to be low, but the number of users is large enough that there will be at least a few seeds out there for most stuff. torrent clients have gotten a lot better at seeding strategies that take into account your seed ratio and what's currently available in the swarm, so if you just leave everything on seed and open your torrent client fairly often (use a VPN though lol), you don't really need to think about it.
then you have private trackers; these operate on an invite basis. the problem with this is that when the pool of users is so small, the odds of a given seed being online are also small. to prevent torrents dying, they gamify it: you get points for seeding and if you don't have enough points you can't download anything until you seed more. to help people get back in the game there will be 'freeleech' events. being active on a private tracker takes a bit of work.
and of course you have to get in in the first place, which tends to require a proven track record of seeding on other private trackers, and some kind of interview with the operators. getting involved in private trackers is a much bigger ask, you have to figure out where to get your foot in the door, and work your way up to the more insular trackers. it's like a mini subculture. it's valuable, but not scalable.
at the top level of inaccessibility is the warez scene. this is a whole subject that i'm not even gonna get into, go read wikipedia. historically this is where the files actually come from, before getting distributed on public trackers, usenet etc. but good luck getting in there lmao, they are understandably quite paranoid.
of course, for stuff to get on pirate sites you need somebody to go the effort of ripping and encoding it. this is where a major point of failure exists. when RarBG went down recently, the biggest loss was not the existing archive of torrent links, which can be backed up - it was that they were very active at converting scene releases into torrents with a decent balance of file size and quality, which then filter out into the various public trackers. that is much harder to replace! but what killed RarBG wasn't even suppression by authorities - according to their statement, it was a bunch of the admins getting covid or dying or fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war, which made the whole operation impossible to continue. so despite the thousands of people who download RarBG torrents, this single point of failure was overstressed and broke.
as far as the ethics of spreading links to pirate sites go... if it's something like a mega drive, yeah, the chances of a takedown are pretty high if it gets noticed! no question. but those things are by nature short-lived; if you want to use that for archival you're building on sand. there's also databases like emuparadise, but there was no saving that through obscurity, it just took Nintendo a minute to bring the case.
in this kind of centralised case, the clock is ticking from day 1. what we want is to maximise the number of people who are able to save copies while it's up, and then some of those people can put it up again somewhere else and keep the authorities playing whack-a-mole. (for a small collection of files, a sensible measure would be to make a torrent and a mega drive side by side, so that people can download the mega drive and then add the torrent to their client to seed if it gets nuked.)
as for torrent sites, the thing is that torrents rely for effectiveness on a swarm that is either very large or very responsible about seeding. if it's a public tracker, it has to be well known or it's pointless. instead of security through obscurity, the form of security for these sites is try to make the resource itself hard to take down - operating the tracker/archive in countries that don't have copyright treaties, maintaining mirrors, and of course distributing as many seeds as possible so the torrent can stay alive even if the site goes down.
the major problem with a dead torrent site is discoverability. if it's harder to find the torrent, fewer people will download it, the existing seeds will gradually go offline, and of course you can't download a torrent that you don't know exists. and while you could imagine a system of broadcasting metadata about a torrent (title, encoding etc.) in a DHT-like way but that would be so vulnerable to fakes and spam. maybe some kind of cryptographically signed 'this torrent is good' declaration is possible? I know certain torrent clients tout discovery features, but honestly I don't know how well they work. I'm sure there are projects that are way ahead of the game than me on this question.
but yeah anyway trying to browbeat people into not sharing links to pirate media is 1. futile, by the time you see it the cat is out of the bag 2. not a sustainable strategy for security. if you wanna lecture people, 'use a VPN and seed your torrents' is evergreen ;p

You can stream almost any movie or tv show (usually with subtitles) for free on anything that can run a web browser by visiting fmovies.to
If the ads are egregious then get an ad blocker. It's easy to do if you're on desktop. If you're on mobile then Firefox supports ad blocking, but Chrome doesn't. You can still block ads while using Chrome on Android though by installing Adguard.
If you want a higher quality and local copy of a movie or show then install a torrent client (I use Deluge) and find an active torrent for whatever you're looking to download. You can find torrents by going to 1337x.to, searching, choosing on of the top results, and then clicking the magnet link. If the magnet link doesn't automatically open the torrent in your torrent client then right click on it, copy the link, and past it into it (how you do this will probably vary slightly depending on what torrent client you're using).
You can also find movie torrents at yts.mx (which I like using just because it's a nice spot for browsing new releases when I'm not looking for anything in specific).
If you're worried about getting in trouble for torrenting (in canada ISPs are legally required to pass along any threatening copyright notices that they receive for your IP address, but you can and should just ignore these notices) then (instead of paying for a VPN) the website seedr.cc will torrent things for you and give them to you as regular downloads (that way your IP address isn't exposed to anyone other that seedr) (using it also means you won't need to install a torrent client). You don't get much space, but you can get more (without paying) by referring people (who also don't have to pay).
Running a random torrented windows executable can be sketchy sometimes, but you aren't going to get a virus from a pirated movie or song or a console video game rom.

PIRATE SAFELY!! But pirate ;)
Hello! I’ve gotten a flood of new followers thanks to an addition I made about NOT torrenting from the Pirate Bay, so I want to address it better.
If you’ve come to check my blog for more piracy resources, advice, guides, etc, then check out some of the links in this pinned!
First and Foremost, Do not do Anything without an adblocker. Ublock Origin is the best.
Resources/Wikis: 🌟Top recommendation is the Free Media Heck Yeah Wiki, frequently updated, maintained, and transparent, as well as has a welcoming community behind it if you have questions. The rest are for redundancy's sake and for anything not found in FMHY, though most Wikis on this topic tend to repeat the same info. 🌟
VPN Comparison Chart - General Rule of Thumb, DO NOT use any VPN recommended by Youtubers, influencers, or any other shill with a profit motive. Large marketing budget does not equal good privacy practices. Do your own research.
-Since both Mullvad VPN and IVPN are planned to now suspend port forwarding support, the next best choices for torrenting though a VPN seem to be AirVPN and ProtonVPN.
HOWEVER, AirVPN has no evidence of a no logging policy (aka there’s a chance they keep records of what you do on their service) and ProtonVPN has no method of anonymously signing up and use a subscription model instead of a preferable pay-as-you-go model. So take that as you will.
(NOTE: You do not need to pay for a VPN if you are only directly downloading from a server or streaming off of websites! But it’s probably a good idea for privacy reasons anyways.)
A very good Comprehensive Torrenting Guide! -eye strain warning
And another one!
-If you torrent you need a VPN depending on how strict your government is on copyright laws. This works on a case by case basis, so I recommend looking up your own country's laws on the matter. Generally speaking, use a VPN to torrent if your country falls under The 14 Eyes Surveillance Alliance. More info on what that is Here.
A Note about Antivirus: - If you're using trusted websites, and not clicking on any ad links/fake download ads (Should be blocked by ublock), then you don't necessarily need any antivirus. Common Sense and Windows Defender should be enough to get you by. If you would like to be certain on what you are downloading is legitimate, then run your file through a virus scanner like VirusTotal. Keep in mind that when scanning cracked software some scans may flag “false positives” as the injectors used to crack the software look like malware to these scanners. Once again, the best way to avoid malware is to use trusted sites listed here and use an adblocker at all times.
If you have any questions on anything posted, need help finding things, or just need some clarification on any terms used, shoot me an ask or message! I've got a few years experience with not paying for anything I want, and LOVE to help others with this kind of stuff. But if you don't trust me, since I am a random stranger on the internet, that's fine (I wont be offended promise)! Do your own research!
INFORMATION SHOULD BE FREE!

so hey, question! i've been wanting to start learning how torrent(ing?) works so i can take screenshots and make gifs easier (i miss making precure gifs so bad), but i have genuinely no idea how any of that kinda stuff works. would you maybe have a guide or explanation thingy that i could check out? i think i maybe remember seeing you post one a while ago but i can not find it for the life of me. i'm planning on getting stuff from nyaa.si if that helps?
sorry if this is a weird question and dont feel obligated to answer if you don't wanna! <3
Hello @wazzuppy!
Here is my guide on piracy in general. It includes links on guides on how to torrent, VPNs to use, sites to use, etc, so I think you're set!
I will narrow things down and make it more specific for you though:
Here is the guide on torrenting (the act of torrenting itself is easy btw, literally all you have to do is click a button and it pretty much does the work itself lol. It's getting the right VPN, finding torrent sites, avoiding bad torrents [which won't be an problem on Nyaa or other legit sites] that's the issue)
For VPNs, if you plan on using a VPN exclusively for torrenting I recommend going with Mullvad. Mullvad is not going to let you stream from other countries on Netflix or whatever, and it's so strong that I can't even use Airdrop on my Mac when it's active. However, it's by far the most secure VPN for torrenting you can use. DO NOT use highly advertised VPNs like NordVPN; I used Nord and I got busted by my ISP multiple times even though I had it active. Stuff like NordVPN and SurfShark is fine for doing stuff like streaming Netflix, but for torrenting, you really need a VPN that's exclusively dedicated to protecting you from your ISP finding out what you're doing. Another VPN that is recommended is AirVPN, which still uses port-forwarding (I don't really know what that means but a lot of heavy-duty torrent users find it important).
For the torrent client itself, I recommend qBittorrent. It's an excellent torrent client, especially for beginners thanks to its user-friendly interface.
Also, just a note, Mullvad will be $5 a month (AirVPN has multiple price points depending on how long you want to sign up for) while everything else is free. But you definitely don't want to skimp on a VPN, trust me.
Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Why is everyone pretending SOAP2DAY didn't shut down because of people sharing the site EVERYWHERE? I really thought we all had this sacred agreement to not share piracy sites for the good of the community

keeping a glacially-slow torrent up as long as possible and adopting a streetpass puzzle swap mentality about it
it's been over two and a half days. i don't even have half of the file. i've had it going for long enough that i've uploaded enough data to be almost one and a half of the entire thing. i think there might have been some errors at the start and i'm desperately hoping they didn't corrupt anything. nobody's got a full copy that they're still seeding.
hopefully other people come online with pieces i don't have

can you make a beginners guide for people who want to get into piracy please?
Far more knowledgeable people than I have already done it, so I figure I'd aggregate a bunch of links to piracy stuff I trust. I'm just dragging my heels about it. I can give a brief blurb on torrenting, though. I also highly suggest checking Archive.org, and I trust downloading content from it.
Getting a VPN¹ and a BitTorrent client² is all you really need. I use Nord³ and qBittorrent. 1337x is my favorite site for finding the torrents. I suggest using Magnet Links⁴ over actually downloading the .torrent file. Pay attention to what files are in the torrent before you start the download⁵ and you pretty much don't have to worry too much about malicious files. If you are not well read and practiced, never download a torrent with a .EXE file, and you should be good for the most part. Obviously, there is a looooooot more to it, but stuff like movies/music/TV are pretty easy. Programs and games take a bit more know how.
¹IMO prty much everyone should have a VPN if you are significantly online, regardless.
²The program you download and share torrents with. Please seed.
³There are better VPNs, I'll be switching when I can.
⁴There will be a picture of a literal Magnet next to the Magnet Link on 1337x and the vast majority of torrent sites.
⁵Your BitTorrent Client will tell you this.

She fixes her eyes upon the screen with more fervor than she ever did at the chapel of the Fleshgod, white-knuckled grasp curling about the edges of a table that rickets to the lurch of her heart, twining between shuddering breaths sundry pleas, prayers, promises and praises, crooning into the datastream the litany of her love.
Oh, how long she's waited, how deeply she's yearned, swirling like tempests portended in the dance of dead leaves to explosions of passion and pain. She's beaten at the wood that groans without purchase, sworn oaths of fidelity and revenge at her dastard lover, stormed away some nights in bitter disgust, lurking and pacing about the dim light of a console she strives not to look at, recollecting loudly all the things she'd rather do with her life, all the alternatives she has to this pathetic ritual of waiting, and last of all, when nothing avails, how little it all matters and what a perfect fool she was to care.
It convinces her- almost, briefly, profoundly- but it doesn't matter, because every damned time her eyes flit back to that accursed shrine to want, to the rubbled temple of her desire- the sight of a connection, the seeding of a hope, hooks into her breast once more the pull of a wish, the magnetism of forgiveness. Oh, had there ever been a wretch so ungrateful as to doubt the loyalty of her beloved, question the certainty of her arrival? What paramour worth pursuing lets the chase end before it begins, arriving two hours early to the juncture of their destinies, punctual on the dot to the tying of red strings? Oh, she's always been such a minx, that playful little dancer upon her pleadings, that soul-rippling butterfly! It's why she fell in love with her, she's sure, mesmerized by her elusiveness, by that shivering heat in half-shut eyes that longs to trace a moonray more, to catch just another glimpse of her fluttering smiles.
Won't she be a dear now and hurry up? Or tarry a bit, and take her time, so long as she's in sight, so long as the one who's awaited her these interminable weeks can feel dispersed and delicate upon the air some echo of her breath wending its way down a space they share, ah, some balmy penumbra cold with the light she's stolen from the long harsh stars with the miracle of her corporeality. What a wretch she was to have ever slighted such a perfect creature, ever harboured in her sizzling chest the meanest dram of resentment! Didn't she know there were so many who had it worse, never experiencing any hint at all of their fated raptures, never feeling their bellies quiver at the conception of gentle futures, at the striking of a pact with those sylphs of the node, those packet-mantled fae, conjured from the lacing ardours of a million melding needs? Oh goddess! Oh vision! She would wait forever, for centuries and even the ten minutes more forecasted by the app, for the descent of her grace into her humble home, into this pit where want had churned for fortnights.
Ah- had she left? Had she turned! Oh, too cruel, mistress, to disdain me when I sink upon my knees in the depths of my hunger, so heavy with the lack of you, so hollow in the shapes you love. Reconsider, forgive, forfend, thaw- was she such a hopeless prospect after all? Did she not deserve one smile, one touch after so long, one bloom after such toils of seeding to burst through the soil of the interface? If there was ever such a thing as mercy, or kindness, or virtue, she would have finished by now, reached the peace that lingers beyond those bittersweet brinks that have bordered her nights with dizziness and despair. She'd never be free of her, would she? It was always going to be like this for all the miserable weeks to follow, her every moment hounded by that hoary hope, pulling her like jaws on a hind to the heels of her mistress, whimpering for release, helpless and pitiful-
Oh! A step! Another! Dare she? Could she? Would she? No, no, a million noes before she risked a yes, a million nods before she shook away- what excruciations does love drive us to, the lowest of all for their suspensions, stretching us to the breadths of an earth minuscule before mother heaven, mommy helheim- damn, she's slipping, drowsiness looming, bruised spirit slow to soar again, but she has to focus and keep her eyes on the prize and wait and repeat whatever prayer it was that fetched her a whole 11.3% that day and ask and beg and hoot and melt and-
Oh. It's done. She's here. Before me. With me. As fully mine as I was hers. Close enough to touch once my fingers remember to do anything other than clench. I slump. I breathe. I unfurl. I am numb with the expectation of pleasure. I burn in the wake of passing pains. I am complete. I am whole. Her whole. Her crevice and cocoon. My machine- oh, loyal and stalwart steed who bore me down so many plains, cherished familiar who summoned for me so many dreams- sings out now the message of our salvation, the proof and prize of all my pains, the confirmation supreme- Download Complete.
She smiles as the angel she'd hoped to meet for a lifetime stretching back to early September emerges now in the blush of winter's shimmering delight. The sparks and synths of her, pieced together by the grand magic of summoners connected across space and time in that most heroic of missions, flow together beneath her halting touch like the kiss of a summer stream. She's resplendent, she reflects, empowered in the rush of her relief to bat away those trite warnings about ransomware and unfamiliar programs- didn't these foolish guards know how well she'd sketched out the miracle of this moment as she'd waited, how long it had been since she'd let this spirit of the ether entirely into her heart? Nothing would come between them now, no calamity drive them apart, and if it did, well, she'd simply carry out the whole song and dance again, for she knew beyond all question now that faith would would fetch its reward, love see all labours redeemed.
Truly, there is nothing so sublime in this world as the love between a Torrentgirl and her Receiver.

downloading a few things off of Nyaa (including A Sign of Affection's dub, since ), and it seems that the most downloaded torrent of Blood Blockade Battlefront is garbo?
The dub for Season 1 (the season I have seen) is apparently compressed to all hell(salem's lot) to the point where it's nearly unlistenable (and I love the dub, except I know unfortunately Zapp would be recast if there's ever a third season since Ian Sinclair isn't a POC), and the subs for the Japanese version of & Beyond are also apparently lackluster...
Guess I'll just order the BD for &B when I get paid tomorrow
