Pier Pressure (Poem) . It was the summer of 79 When youth was young And the days were long The sun shone brightly Above a clear blue sky The ocean roared Seagulls squawked and shrieked Ice cream melted in sticky hands The hum of holidays Hung decadently in the air Tourists and locals mingled In restaurants and bars While teenagers frolicked On the edge of the pier. The watermelon vendors Made a healthy living Down by the beach With the golden sand The shops and kiosks We're bulging in stock That vanished by the day’s end The horseback trail rides were full For that journey up the mountain The view from there Was worthy of a Napoleon ransom. . The nights were more subdued Groups of friends Would gather everywhere The noises of the day Given way to the subjugation Of young adults in blissful euphoria The atmosphere was charged There was a thrill in the air The drinks were flowing And the food was vanishing As the day pulled down its blinds The dark of the evening Gently blanketed our world. . Into the deep night We collected ourselves Old friendship rekindled New ones birthed Until the new sun Across the horizon peeked. And as we stragglers, The last survivors Of the long hot night, Stumbled down the cobbled streets To a welcoming bed The bronzed children of the sun Would run past us With spirits high And smiles broad To the end of the pier Where the pressure was on To jump the highest Or dive the longest. . . .
