The Ranch Hand brush guard did it's job, but it needed a few tweeks to make everything functional again. After some backwoods bodywork, everything opens and closes the way it should and we can get back to work. I carry a couple of tow straps and some hardware to do vehicle recoveries. hey y'all who may be experiencing winter driving conditions for the first time everrr

tips from an Albertan!

1. if it's going to be colder than -20C overnight, plug in your car's block heater, if you have one, and especially if your battery isn't brand new. just your regular outlet on the side of your house plus an extension cord will do, preferably a cord meant for outdoor use if u have it. this will help ur car start in the morning 👍

1. b. remember to unplug your car before u drive away

1. c. always park ur car with the front facing outwards in case it DOESN'T start and u need someone to jump your battery. make the hood acessible from the front whenever possible! (side note: always a good idea to keep jumper cables in your car)

1. d. how to jump a battery:

- the "donor" car can be running for this. the "dead" car is obviously not running

- Donor car driver attaches their red clamp to the + terminal on the donor car battery. The cables are live now!! Whoever's holding the other two ends, don't let them touch each other!!

- "Dead" car driver attaches their red clamp to the + terminal on the dead car battery

- Donor car driver attaches the black clamp to the - terminal on their battery

- Dead car driver attaches the black clamp to the - terminal on their battery. Google will tell you to attach this clamp to a "grounded piece of metal" somewhere on your car but when you're freezing ur butt off and don't know what's metal and what's plastic u can absolutely just stick that clamp on the battery as well. the battery will probably only explode if it's been frozen at below -40C for like 5 days

- if the dead battery is REALLY dead, let the donor car run for a bit before starting up the dead car

- start up the dead car

- u can remove the cables with both cars running. remove them in the same order you put them on

- leave the dead car running for at least 15 minutes so that your alternator has time to start charging the battery instead of using power

2. start ur car for 5-10 minutes in the morning before you go, to warm up the engine, then u can have heat sooner

3. if you have to park at work for more than 8 hours, with nowhere to plug in, and it's -20C or colder, you may want to start your car on your lunch break and let it run for 5-10 minutes so it actually starts again at the end of your day. remind your car how good it feels to be alive ❤

4. if the roads are bad, keep a good following distance and give yourself lots of time to brake. and expect all intersections to be icy so turn slowly, and accelerate gradually from a full stop

5. if you hit a patch of ice pump the brakes!! don't slam em

6. keep pace with traffic. drivers that are way too slow are just as dangerous as fast ones. especially if visibility is bad; people don't want to suddenly come up on your tail and have to slam their brakes

7. if you absolutely must drive way slower than everyone else, please put on your hazard lights

8. cold air makes the air pressure in your tires decrease--check your tire pressure bc low enough pressure + driving can make the tire come off the rim

9. if ur car doesn't have heat, leave the windows cracked so your windows don't fog up. hot tip from my friend with no heat in her car, RIP to her 💀

10. dress warm and keep blankets in your car in case you get stuck somewhere. really just prepare for the worst!

feel free to add anything! esp about getting unstuck from snow! i've thankfully only gotten stuck once and some guy with a pickup and towstraps pulled me out, so I don't really have any experience with getting unstuck on my own. maybe keep a shovel in your car?
