Ace Info Compilation part 11: Ace and Cater
Cater and Ace meet for the first time right after the opening ceremonies and during Heartslabyul’s welcome party, when Cater overhears him trying to convince Deuce to sneak into the headmage’s office.
The second time they meet Cater accosts both him and Deuce for a selfie as “the ones who broke a billion-thaumark chandelier” and “the one who ate the housewarden’s tart that same night.”
After drafting them into painting roses Cater reveals that Ace won’t actually be allowed back into the dorm until he brings a tart to replace what he stole, and he never intended to allow them back in the first place.
On EN Cater assigns Ace and Deuce the nickname “hunting season,” but only uses it once before changing to “A2.” On JP, his nickname for the two is always “ADeuce.”
In a vignette we see Ace going to Cater’s aid of his own accord: when other Heartslabyul students accuse Cater of being a poor leader and call for Riddle to collar him, Ace interrupts to reveal that their problem can be solved via Cater’s Magicam account. Ace even joins in to help Cater’s group without complaint, saying it is “like a treasure hunt.”
Ace often seems to blur the lines of politeness and formality, and this is especially true of his interactions with Cater: despite Cater being both older and an upperclassman, Ace is quick to call Cater out for going off “on some tangent” and for showing up to try their chestnut tart without helping prepare it in Book 1, despite having only just met him.
Ace also calls Cater “way too shallow” and “a shameless fanboy” in Book 5.
Ace is possibly just very comfortable around Cater, saying that he would choose him as his older brother if he could.
We see Cater sharing sweets from Trey with Ace and the two students attend the Wish Upon a Star event together (where Ace offers to take a video on Cater’s behalf), Ace performs sleight of hand tricks for Cater, offers to teach him (in exchange for a favor) and goes to Cater when Deuce is having difficulty with math.
During Halloween we see Cater get a phone call from Trey saying that Ace has jumped in to help Deuce with a problem and Cater responds, “Ugh, he’s probably just trying to do me a ‘favor’ so he can get leverage over me!”
(Ace refusing to help without receiving proper compensation seems to be a theme: in a vignette where Silver is having trouble coming up with a look for Halloween Ace offers to give him advice in exchange for receiving tips on how to recreate Diasomnia’s gothic aesthetic. (“…since I’m gonna be scratching your back, you can go ahead and scratch mine!”)
Ace seems to namedrop Cater very often, mentioning him in Book 3 and 5 saying he has “surprisingly good moves” on a broom and expressing displeasure that Cater tagged a picture of him on his birthday as “GrowingBoyAcey.”
When Ace learns that most of the dorm disappeared at the start of Spectral Soiree his first reaction is, “Wait, where’s Cater?”

How does the diamond snare thing work?
Diamond cutting, from the Ming Dynasty fairy novel "Journey to the West", is the magic weapon of the Taishang Laojun. A dense white circle, also known as the golden steel ring, diamond sleeve; can change, is invulnerable to water and fire, can hit all things, collect all kinds of magic weapons and weapons, and the magic is endless. It was refined by Naikun steel, and it was also refined by Huan Dan. It has spirituality. It was used by Laozi for self-defense when he used it and used this treasure to overthrow Sun Wukong and help Erlang Shen capture him.
Later, it was stolen by Taishang Laojun's mount "Banjiao Qingniu", and fled to the lower realm to occupy the mountain as a demon. He called himself the One-Horned Rhino King, captured Tang Monk in Jindou Mountain. He used this treasure set to get Sun Wukong's golden hoop, the six demon-subduing weapons of Prince Nezha, and the magic weapons of all the gods and generals were taken away together, even water, fire, thunder, and lightning can be absorbed. Later, the king was subdued by the Taishang Laojun who came down to earth with a fire-type plantain fan. After subduing the green bull demon, he took back the diamond cutter and returned the weapons of the gods. Finally, the diamond cutter became the nose ring of the one-horned green bull.
Taishang Laojun is the imperial blacksmith of the Heavenly Court. He has made diamond bracelets, purple, gold, and red gourds, mutton fat jade bottles, golden ropes, plantain fans, seven-star swords, and many other magic weapons. The diamond snare being the most powerful as he used to go down to earth and defeat Sun Wukong after the Tota King, Eighteen Arhats, and other gods in Jindou Cave. Finally, Laojun took away the gold steel bracelet with a plantain fan and subdued the One-Horned Rhino King.

Best Underrated Anime Group A Round 1: #A2 vs #A7
#A2: Girls do DIY together, but after a new industrial revolution
This series takes place after the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Serufu and her childhood friend Miku/“Purin” both applied to an elite school, where advanced technologies are incorporated into the curriculum. The tech-savvy Purin is accepted into the school, but accident-prone Serufu is rejected and enters a traditional school instead, driving a wedge into their friendship.
On her way to class one day, Serufu encounters Rei, who has a passion for old-fashioned crafts and is the head of the school’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Club—which is in danger of closing due to a lack of members. Realizing that this may be her chance to repair her relationship with Purin, Serufu joins the club in hopes of creating projects that could bring them together once more.
#A7: Immortal being learns what it’s like to be human
This show is about an immortal being learning of death, life, and what it means to be human. They’re able to shapeshift into anything they create an emotional bond with, but with a cost: if they wish to transform into a living being, including people, that person has to have died.

It’s just a really feel-good series with some really good characters. I adore all of the characters and their dynamics with each other, especially the main dynamic between Serufu and Purin as it develops. I’m a really big fan of the show’s angle on stuff such as do-it-yourself crafts following another industrial revolution, just because it does frequently bring up the question of “What’s the point of DIY if in a year or two/maybe even now a robot could recreate the exact same result?” through characters like Purin (who is the major character with the lowest opinion on these kinds of crafts at the start, since she’s in the technologically advanced school and has beliefs more in line with the efficacy of technology rather than the joy of human creation), with the short answer largely being because it’s just fun!
I first watched this show before I saw a lot of AI stuff intruding upon art and rewatching it after sure was fun, because I love its ideas on the worth of doing stuff that machinery could do much faster. It’s not super complex or emotional, but that largely goes in its favor, because it really doesn’t need to be those. It’s just a fun little anime about a bunch of girls having fun together through one shared hobby that some of them had from the start and some of them adopted. I also love the opening, and the ending is a massive comfort song for me. The series can also be very funny at points, and is usually super heartwarming.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched an anime that has meant so much. Fushi’s journey from being born as nothing and without emotions, to becoming a genuine, real person who loves and cries is so special to me. The constant war he’s in between being too human and being not human at all is written so well—for him to love so much it hurts, leading him to isolate himself for years on end, for him to want to make friends, to love, but too afraid of them leaving and eventually dying to meet anyone new. For him to get so detached from life and death and the cycle it perpetuates that he loses understanding of why human life is so special—why should he save people, if they will die anyway? Why should he save them, if he can just bring them back to life, if he can just become them? The constant cycle of him learning to love again, and learning to treasure life again, only to lose it once he’s experienced death in a new and agonizing way. It’s about love, and it’s about humanity. Always.

my year in review
how it started:
super depressed about my life
feeling very lost / lonely / unsure
how it went:
reconnected with old friends and discovered an awesome new group of people who i treasure deeply. went to their wedding and met my super cool internet friends for the first time
got a 40% pay rise at my job
found a therapist i vibe with
started learning german and got up to A2 level
fell in love for the first time (long distance!). spent 2.5 short but intense weeks together in-person. got my heart broken
visited poland and germany, and travelled on my own for the first time
goals for 2024:
move out and rent somewhere in the city where my friends are / rent is cheaper / things are happening
visit germany again either with friends or on my own
see if me and him can work as friends, because i feel like i found a kindred spirit and that seems like too precious a thing to let slip away
get up to B1/B2 level in german

just generally chill and have a nice time

ND for NT?
Neurodivergence in National Treasure
(Ben Gates Edition)
Previously, we discussed what the casting of Nicolas Cage brought to the role of Ben Gates, namely
age
a different relationship with attractiveness, and
Weirdness™
But for a lot of fans, Cage’s performance brings something else to the character as well: autism.
I have to admit, though I am no stranger to bestowing neurodivergent headcanons on my favorite media, National Treasure never caught my eye as a potential subject.
However, y’all have spoken.
So let’s explore this!
Because it seems relevant before we dig in, I am an official member of the Squirrel Gang (ADHD) but I’m probably not autistic. I did have a “what’s the difference/do I have both?” phase, so I’m a bit familiar with the criteria, how masking affects diagnosis etc. I’ll do my best to be faithful to your experience.
Okay.
While official diagnosis is definitely not everything when it comes to neurodivergence, we’ll start with the DSM-5 criteria for autism so we have a common framework to reference from.
I thought these two sites had particularly good breakdowns, one in table form and one in infographic and prose form.
Basically, there are two main diagnostic ‘buckets.’ Group A is about “Persistent differences in communication” and consists of three subcategories. All three must be present for diagnosis. Group B is about repetitive behaviors and interests, and two of the four subcategories are required for diagnosis.
Parts C-E are more of a check after A and B are met, so we’ll deal with those last.
I’ll also be adopting the convention of changing the DSM’s language of “deficits” to “differences” throughout, because fuck that.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN GATES
A1. “Differences in social-emotional reciprocity.”
In adults this can look like “difficulty initiating or sustaining back and forth conversation; tendency to monologue without attending to listener cues; unusual response to greetings or other social conventions.”
Ben certainly does have a few unusual responses to conversation. When he meets Abigail for the first time, he’s on a very serious mission (his last chance to save the Declaration of Independence without committing a felony) but the first words out of his mouth are about her accent. Then at the end of that conversation, once he realizes she’s not going to engage with him on the topic anymore, he jumps up to end the conversation quickly and awkwardly, only reengaging with her when he brings up the GW buttons again. Ben offers no small talk that is not related to American History.
During the gala, he doesn’t seem to realize that Abigail and Stan are weirded out by his toast to high treason and enthusiasm for entrail-based punishments.
After he and Riley rescue Abigail from the catering truck, he asks her “Are you hungry?” This reads to me as an attempt to startle her out of her shock long enough to get an answer to his actual question (“Are you alright?”), but still.
And Ben Gates doesn’t not have a tendency to monologue. This is especially apparent in Book of Secrets, where he consistently talks over Abigail and Riley without listening to them. Though, as always, I do not think BoS was well-written or particularly in-character, so I treat it as canon only when it suits me.
A2. “Differences in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction”
This section is about difficulty understanding non-verbal social cues, tendency to minimally communicate through facial expression and gesture, dislike of eye contact, and difficulty moderating tone/volume of voice.
Once of the main points of evidence of this is that fact that Ben seemingly did not have any idea that Ian was a criminal, that Shaw brought a gun on the Charlotte expedition, or that they were going to turn on him at any moment.
Ben Gates is a smart man, but he’s blind to this either because he’s so desperate to find the Charlotte that he’s ignoring any troubling signs, either consciously or subconsciously, and/or he genuinely cannot read them. He might be completely unaware of the power dynamics between Ian, Shaw, and the rest of the crew, with are portrayed via tone and body language throughout the film.
Ian and Ben also agree that Ben cannot bluff. While he does manage to fool Ian at the end of the film, both other times when Ian brings up bluffing—on the Charlotte and in front of Trinity Church—Ben looks like a deer caught in the headlights.
When he gets the instructions to jump off the Intrepid, Ben doesn’t have to fool anyone, because the agents are too far away to see what he’s doing and he straight-up tells Sadusky what he’s going to do.
Headcanon alert: We know Ben has played poker with Ian. While you could certainly believe that Ian and the gang were play low-stakes cards sometimes to entertain themselves, I absolutely prefer to believe that Ben was running out of resources for the search and found his way into a back room poker game in a desperate bid to buy himself a little more time. At first, Ian saw a mark he could swindle out of his last few hundred dollars, but as Ben kept going on about this treasure and a girl named Charlotte, he got a much more lucrative idea.
In the tone of voice category, we have the exquisitely delivered “Rheallhy?” Ben also has a tendency to mumble to himself, as when Sadusky is playing with the glasses and he says,

There’s more to it.
It’s hard for me to tell how Ben does as far as eye contact goes, but what’s very clear is that the time he does purposefully make extended eye contact it’s awkward as shit.
A3. "Differences in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships"
This is the part where I just copy + paste the Nic Cage and the Art of Weirdness article to answer this prompt.
As a recap, we looked at the version of Ben presented in the 2003 script (just before Cage signed onto the movie) and the final character, and noted how Ben became less social and more isolated in the final film. References to previous girlfriends and an ongoing friendship with Riley are gone, as is the landlady whom he’s friendly with, etc. The film version of Ben Gates is someone who doesn’t seem to be particularly close to anyone, other than the people he needs for the treasure hunt (Ian and Riley).
So there’s some plausible evidence in all three subcategories of Group A. Let’s move on to Group B! (Remember, we only need 2/4 here.)
B1. “Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech”
Ben does not strike me as a particularly stimmy person. Unless he’s doing actions directly related to the treasure hunt, he’s often framed as the still, stable center while Riley bounces around him.
(In these scenes, this blocking represents Ben’s resolve and the peace he’s made with his decision to steal the Declaration, versus Riley’s reticence and need to find another way out.)
He does do this thing, where he circles a finger over his temple,
which I adore because he’s being so intense and patiently righteous about it, but without other similar examples, I wouldn’t call this more than neurotypical levels of stimming.
B2. “Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns of verbal or nonverbal behavior”
We meet Ben Gates during the two wildest weeks of his life, and he doesn’t seem to be clinging to a set routine. We get so few glimpses of his regular daily life that it’s hard to support.
B3. “Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus”
Do I even have to answer this one?
Boy hears story.
Boy spends next 30 years obsessively pursuing story.
Boy steals Declaration of Independence to prove story is true.
My guess is that it’s Ben’s lifelong fixation on the treasure and American history what gets people looking at whether he’s ND in the first place. Lmk if it was something else for you though!
B4. “Hyper- or hyporeactivity to sensory input or unusual interest in sensory aspects of the environment”
I don’t know that I would have considered this outside of the scope of this topic, but yeah, I could see a case for Ben being hyposensitive. He stabs his thumb on the Charlotte like it’s a pretty easy and normal thing to do. It’s Riley who really flinches, not Ben.
When he jumps off of the Intrepid, he doesn’t seem sore or cold afterward. Yes, the henchmen bring him dry clothes, but he doesn’t seem physically phased by such a dramatic stunt.
So we can meet the two out of four requirement here as well.
Groups C-E
These groups can be asked as three questions:
C. Were the symptoms present in early development?
We only see young Ben for a few minutes, but when we do he is already interested enough in the treasure to sneak into the attic to learn about it, and we know he gets obsessed with the legend that night and never lets it go.
Without additional information, we can say yes.
D. Do the symptoms cause clinically significant impairment?
While none of what we’re discussing here seems to impair Ben’s treasure hunting ability, I do think it’s be easy to make a case that this globetrotting treasure hunter gig is one of the only ones he’s well suited for. If Ben were forced to work an office job, for instance, I do not see him succeeding in that environment. I don’t know that he’d get the hierarchy, why he can’t just do what he wants, when he wants, that not everyone is driven by a greater purpose larger than themselves, etc.
So sure, check that off.
E. Are these disturbances not better explained by intellectual disability?
No. This seems self explanatory.
Congratulations! Benjamin Franklin Gates is fully diagnosable with autism if you so wish!
But what if you don’t wish?
Caveats and such
Well, first of all, you’re allowed to see fictional characters however you want to. The Ben Gates you have in your head is ever so slightly different from the one I have in mine, and the one another reader has in theirs. If it’s important to you that he’s autistic, or allistic, or whatever, then he is.
And there’s a big asterisk I have to put on this assessment. Well, actually 2.
One, I am not a trained professional, and fictional character Ben Gates was not here to answer these questions himself.
Two, there’s a caveat to all of this analysis, a loophole, and I already brought it up:
We only see Ben Gates during the two weirdest weeks of his life.
So yes, could he struggle with eye contact and reading social cues and that’s why he’s so unhinged during the toast? Absolutely.
But he’s also like, a would-be history professor about to commit a major crime with one week of preparation. He’s not the slick professional we’re used to seeing in heist movies like Ocean’s Eleven, nor is he a highly trained Bond-style hero who’s ready for anything. He’s a regular (ish) person about to do something he can never take back. How is he supposed to be “normal” in that situation? What does that even look like?
The only food we see him eat is a microwaved Stouffer’s lasagna. Is that because he relies on the predictable taste and texture of processed foods, or because he’s been planning a heist all week and doesn’t have time for anything else? You decide!
Is he hyposensitive to pain, or is he just an action-adventure protagonist who’s expected to action-adventure without getting a scratch until the plot demands otherwise? He could be both!
Conclusion
Personally, while I like this reading of the character, I’m not sure I consider it ‘basically canon’ the way I do some other ND headcanons, in large part because we spend so little down time with Ben. I have no idea what his regular life is like.
I was looking through my favorite/personal ND headcanons, and most of them are from TV shows rather than movies. I think that’s precisely because long-term behavior patterns are so much more apparent in people you spend weeks or years with.
However, as a matter of fic and headcanon, I love this! Because there you can spend as much time with Ben as you want to. It opens up so many opportunities to add my very favorite thing in fictional narratives: texture.
Did Ben truly have no idea what Ian was capable of?
Does all this adventuring make his samefoods hard to come by?
Does he hate the feeling of wet clothing, because hoo boy, he is having a Bad Time™ in Book of Secrets.

finished a (partial) rewatch of the 1.1a anime
yes, they made some things different but i didnt really pay much attention at the time. mostly because i wasnt as in Deep as i am now
i am going crazy with new context/info from playing the other games since the anime aired. will be jotting down whatever the fuck i think of as i think of it

futaba and yotsuba in a2s flashback making it seem like theyre gonna go with the route where a2 meets the red girls and show their meeting in part 2?
i said this^ as a joke recently because i forgot a lot of what happens in the anime, but. in the last episode of the anime, i thought she said "entertain us, 9s" but no. she fucking says "entertain us, no.9" meaning that they KNOW about what the original no.9 did and his relation to 9s and how theyre going to activate the virus backdoor to further their plans
the fast glitchy scenes at the end that show 9s being killed by 2b, implying we'll see one of his 48 executions
he also had a previous glitchy moment where a weird memory overlaid itself on top of 2b as he looked at her in the present, making it seem like he remembered her killing him before
that memory was near the shopping center, and the final scenes of the anime were also at the shopping center. wondering how far theyll take this and show every time shes killed him

Dark Magic Kingdom au info
AU where the Disney parks funded and had their Imagineers develop a series of highly advanced walkabout animatronics to allow guests to more authentically meet their favorite characters. Inspired by @disney-android-foundation ‘s AU and the concepts behind the disney parks kinect game and the mobile game Disney Magic Kingdoms
Since I have the ability to envision the company as not a totally soulless corporation in this AU, this implementation didn’t result in all character and mascot actors getting fired. They’re now either on the repair teams, understudies (to take the place of an animatronic if it breaks down) or character handlers (the folks who keep an eye on the animatronics and make sure they A. aren’t left to just break down somewhere, B. don’t wander farther than they’re supposed to, and C. don’t cause trouble for the guests) Character handlers also sometimes have to break up character fights or arguments because they’re all programmed to act and interact with each other very authentically.
However the animatronics were built with Asimov’s first law in mind, so unless something goes REALLY wrong, they’re incapable of intentionally causing physical harm to humans. Some of them will definitely yell at your kids though.
This AU is centered around the villains but there’s hero characters too (princes, princesses, mascots, supporting characters, etc), and I would be happy to talk about them as well if requested.
I’m mostly covering Disney animated movies, but also Pixar films, spin-off cartoons of both, stuff based on the rides (PotC, Haunted Mansion mostly), and Star Wars stuff (though mostly prequel era content because that’s my main area of interest and expertise). I’m not really going to cover Marvel stuff, sorry, I’m just not a big enough MCU nerd. Block criteria is at the bottom (I don't expect everyone to read it, it's just there for like. My stance on things I think matter and an explanation as to if anyone gets blocked and doesn't get why)

A Sky Pirate's Life for Me!
Edit: I just realized I already made a post for this comm, may or may not delete the older post just because I'm still proud of this one and I want it to be relevant.
This somewhat older commission I got was made by my friend @wineofglass, same artist who made a standing pose of me in a custom Pokémon GO set I made!
For this epic solo shot, I am dressed after Vaan from Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (FFXII originally), a young man from the slums who chased his dreams of soaring the cloud seas and earning the rank of Sky Pirate, a title gifted to free flying treasure hunters who ride high in airships, bound not by canyons, waterfalls, nor the pull of gravity itself!
At my foot rest is my trusted partner in crime, Scalder the Piplup, who also dreams big, eager to show he can best anyone no matter how small or scrawny he may appear to be.
In my right gauntlet I possess the fabled Brave Blade, its power draws from the user's will to keep fighting against all odds, never backing down. Unless the situation becomes too dire and a tactical retreat becomes all but necessary, even then the cost of fleeing will be that the sword's power dwindles...

CW TALKS OF VIOLENCE AND MURDER, STABBING.
can i also talk about the shameful desire mixing with immense anger that nines wields for twobe and how it’s demonstrated when he’s k*lling her copy in the soul box. usually especially in media, st*bbing is often a euphemism for, well. sex. penetration, to be more specific.
after the real twobe’s death, nines falls into this spiral. he’s angry. he’s sad. he’s losing all control of every emotion, all at once. all he knew was bloodlust, from then on. all he wanted was to kill a2 for taking 2b away from him. much of this can be illustrated in Long Story when his obsessive and possessive thoughts start to take over, because without 2b, 9s doesn’t feel like he has to hide his shameful and disturbed way of thinking. the mask is off.
when he was in the circuit dimension with his memories being taken from him, he was more than upset. he was angry. every single memory with 2b were his, and he was possessive over them. this passage here from Long Story demonstrates something interesting i think about often:
The shadow persisted. It ate his memories of 2B: the look that she made when she was confused, the rare moments when she expressed anger, and the time she looked back at him.
“Stop it!”
He hurled himself onto the shadow.
“Don’t invade my memories!”
He held down the shadow and constricted him. He was beating down the enemy that had tried to take his precious treasures away.
“Don’t mess with my memories.”
In a flash, he found himself holding a sword. He stabbed the shadow over and over and over. He straddled the shadow, and continued to stab it. He realized that the shadow had 2B’s face. Even then, he kept stabbing it. Red liquid sprayed out.
“This is…my memory!”
This is my memory. This 2B is mine and mine only. 2B is mine…
“2B is mine”. as the shadow presented itself as 2B, he kept stabbing. all his memories and his thoughts took physical form, because deep down inside, he KNEW. he KNEW that it was 2b who took his memories away. the memories that 9s held dear, she took them from him violently. over and over and over again. all this built up anger and betrayal and heartbreak, mixed with desire and possession, he STRADDLED her and killed her, over and over and over again. he had been waiting for this. wanting this. but it was another opportunity that was stolen from him, by a2.
HE wanted to kill her. HE wanted her to suffer. HE wanted her there with him, just so HE could have her back in his life. yes he wanted to kill her. but he didn’t want to live in a reality that she wasn’t apart of. a slaying so intimate, in a cycle reenacted by the two over and over again.
it’s immediately after this, that he starts to think this:

he desired her in every sense of the word, going so far as believing he was the only one who could destroy her, even the cheap copies that the tower confronted him with.

at this point, it’s overkill. he didn’t HAVE to do it. 9S is a scanner after all, not MADE for offensive battle, or battle overall. but this makes him feel good. makes him feel justified.
because in his little fucked up mind, this was the only way to be able to feel close to her again, after she died. in their own little fucked up way, this was how they expressed their intimacy- and it grew into this perverse little monster that overtakes nines until his very end.
