Bohrok, Krana, Le-Koro, and Trauma
We don’t actually know who got caught first, do we?
We know Lewa was last, or at least close to last, since the villagers’ safety was used as blackmail to get Lewa to put the krana on. I could maybe see one or two Matoran potentially hiding until after Lewa was captured, but then Lewa was forced to hunt them down.
However, we don’t know who was caught first, or just as importantly, second. What if Matau was ambushed while doing a short patrol, and was then forced to put Krana on the villagers he had sworn to protect? What if it was Tamaru, who already has a fear of heights and now has to deal with a fear of him/her/theirself? What if Kongu, who was so proud to protect his villagers, but was made to betray them against his will? What if Ka tried to save him, but was driven back by the Bohrok, or Kongu himself ordered Ka away to keep Ka from being injured further?
Who found a friend alone and seemingly injured, only for them to turn around and force a Krana on their face? Or were they all just swarmed at once and the escapees were hunted down shortly afterwards?
Imagine being held down by your friends and having a body-possessing parasite attached to your face. Imagine being afraid of your friends, your neighbors, the ones who were supposed to protect you but at the same time knowing it isn’t their fault. Imagine the trauma of knowing you had done this to someone you care about.
Someone please get Le-Koro a therapist.

Did you like my fic "It's Just Paint"? Do you like explorations of gender and love in the Matoran Universe? Do you like some of the best writing in the fandom? Then read KDNX's fic, "A Different Kind of Unity"!
Seriously, this is one of the fics that makes me glad I am in the Bionicle fandom in 2023; an earnest exploration of what it means to be a Matoran and what it means to love in a world that de-emphasizes that passion, whether it's for yourself, your work, or other people, so much.
Laying on his bed, he found he could hardly sleep. He tossed and turned on the stone slab, staring at the ceiling of his domed hut, casting his eyes to the overstuffed trophy rack on the other side of the room, then to the fabric doll of a blue Matoran at the foot of his bed. He sat up and held the doll gingerly - light blue chest, blue hands and feet, and a mask with a long trunk: the Kanohi Huna, Macku’s mask of choice.

The Turaga Movie Designs, Ranked
#6 Matau
Tumblr media
Weirdly the most human looking mask but rendered without any kind of expression. They didn't even give him eyebrows. Looks like he overdid the botox and sends him straight into uncanny valley territory. I get that he doesn't get any speaking lines and has barely any screentime, but contrasted with the amount of care put into his Matoran form it's a bit of a sad effort. The gold highlights are a nice idea in theory that link to his Toa form, but the blend of gold and grey gives him a weirdly discoloured look. 2/10
#5 Whenua
Tumblr media
Eh. Not a lot of personality coming through here. His mask is basically identical to the Ruru wearing Matoran. Just Some Guy really. 3/10
#4 Nokama
Tumblr media
She at least has facial expressions. Her mask was one of the simpler designs in set form but they've stripped it of all detail- maybe the designers thought the curved lines on the cheeks made her look too old or unfeminine? Eh. Some personality, but still a little bland. Don't look too closely at the body armour. 5/10
#3 Onewa
Tumblr media
Now we're getting somewhere. Most of the details of his mask have been kept, and I like how the ridges above the eyes became Big Craggy Eyebrows. Manages to avoid the uncanny valley that Matau fell into. Has personality but not too ostentatious. Fits the character pretty well 7/10
#2 Vakama
Tumblr media
Yeah, he's the Main Guy out of the Turaga so naturally he got more attention to detail. We make fun of his big monobrow but it really helps sell the character, as does his long pharoah beard. He has the vent covering his mouth but they still managed to make it expressive. The stylized fire staff is nice too. Forehead's a little tall but that's really my only gripe. 9/10
#1 Nuju
Tumblr media
Looks like a horrid little owl man. Strong gargoyle energy. Has one expression and it's Thinking About Murder All Day. Character designers understood the assignment exactly. Mata Nui's perfect creature 1000/10

After arriving in Metru Nui, the Turaga began to occasionally call each of the Toa ‘brother’ or ‘sister’, partially an acknowledgment of their past lives, partially to acknowledge the success that the Toa Nuva have earned, and largely as camaraderie in the bond that they share as Toa or former Toa.
Tahu outwardly acts like it’s only right that he’d be addressed as such, trying to make others believe that he accepts it in stride, but inwardly, he is humbled by the acknowledgment. The Turaga see through his bluster and appreciate his humility.
Onua is outwardly quite humble and appreciative when it happens, but inwardly, he doesn’t quite see himself as being worthy of being addressed by such wise beings as the Turaga, who he holds in high esteem, so he usually comes off as a little bashful when he responds in kind.
The Turaga started being reluctant to call Gali ‘sister,’ largely because she reacts to the title, by pushing herself a little too hard to prove that she is worthy of the acknowledgment. She once to stayed up all night for two days while repairing an aqueduct in Ga-Metru, and when she could barely keep awake during a meeting with the Turaga, everyone immediately decided that Nokama should not call Gali sister anymore.
Kopaka typically glances at whoever called him this and slightly nods, sort of a polite acknowledgment, but those who know him best, especially Nuju, know that he is actually quite touched by the endearment, and he has to be stoic to keep up appearances. Whenua, having the best hearing, has multiple times heard Kopaka whisper ‘thank you, brother’ in response to Nuju or Vakama.
Takanuva started out being quite flustered when he was called brother by any of the elders, still being unused to being called brother even by the other Toa, but as he grew used to his powers and his responsibilities, he began to accept it in stride. He still won’t return the title, since he still uncomfortable with the idea of calling any of the Turaga by that term, but he is still moved by the respect they show him.
Lewa was delighted when they started calling him brother, But he’s also somewhat amused, often laughing when they call him that. To Lewa, it’s still difficult to imagine these wise old beings as Toa heroes, so he can’t always keep himself from laughing. Even so, he never fails to respectfully return the honorific.
The Toa Mahri have varying degrees of acceptance of the honorific. Jaller is proud to carry the title, and Hahli is eager to prove herself worthy of the honorific (though not as much as Gali). Kongo is a bit smug about it, Nuparu takes it in stride, and Hewkii tends to get sort of ‘aw, shucks’ about it. All of them are somewhat muted in their response, mostly because Nuju was the first to call them brother and sister. They all understand that Nuju calls them that as much as he does in memory of Matoro, and his regret that he never got to see his friend as a Toa and call him ‘brother’ in person. The Mahri learned the bird speak for Brother and Sister, and they always call Nuju brother right back.
And the Turaga universally agreed never to call Pohatu ‘brother’ again shortly after the first few times. After then, he began exclusively referring to the Turaga as brother or sister, always with extreme enthusiasm that the elders often find exasperating and often demanding fist bumps from any Turaga he encounters for days after. Most of them just quietly stopped calling him that, except for Onewa, who continued occasionally calling him brother when he felt he had earned it, but after Pohatu found out that Turaga Dume had been a Toa, the seven had an official meeting where they unanimously voted not to call Pohatu brother anymore. Matau still occasionally calls him that, though, because he personally thinks it’s fucking hilarious when Pohatu tries to fist bump Nuju.

I think Glatorian/Agori families are almost exclusively found ones due to the hellish environment they live in and the unlikely amount of actual children that are actually born, so their perception of family trees has shapes that our feeble minds cannot fucking fathom.
Coincidentally this makes the absolutely insane matoran-toa-turaga family structure completely comprehensible to them
Lewa: i have five siblings and one parent, who also has five siblings who are each the individual parent of each of my siblings, but we're not cousins, were siblings. Theres also one guy who made us but we don't really know him and he was nasty to me once so hes not in the family. And each of our parents is also the parent of a small country worth of our little siblings, who are all the little siblings of both me and my siblings but also depending on the colors they are more the little siblings of one of us than of the others, except for the little siblings who can change color at will who are just collective little siblings. And also i have some siblings who used to be little siblings but now are just siblings, which are two completely different things, and me and my siblings' parents used to be our little siblings and then our siblings but then they became our parents. Theres a guy who should be their parent-now-sibling but they dont like him so hes not anything
Some random Agori/Glatorian, nodding sagely: just like my cousin

Fun idea for an interpretation where Vakama's the youngest of the Metru:
On Spherus Magna, Whenua and Matau are walking along with Vakama, who was working overtime at the forge and they're gently scolding him for that. An Agori child overhears them and tells Whenua and Matau if they can boss around Vakama, who's taller than because he's older. And the child's parents say, "You have to respect your elders!"
Vakama bites down his laugher because of a) the unexpected hilarity of the situation because he's the youngest among the three of them, and b) Whenua and Matau's shocked expressions.
This isn't the only time he's thought of as the eldest, often because of his demeanor, how he speaks, and his voice.
His siblings jokingly call him, "Big brother" and "Elder" after that, whhich doesn't face him at all.

Okay, hear me out.
When the Rahaga were first learning how to do what they could to save rahi from the Visorak (and likely in general), they had to have learned quite a lot from failing before figuring out the techniques that work best. Best example: Kualus learning how to do birdspeak. But...
What if they developed a secret "hunting" technique?
Imagine this: the Toa Hordika helping the Rahaga as they're also trying to figure things out before Vakama's betrayal. They come across a rahi that's hiding in a spot that would get exposed or destroyed by the Visorak, and it refuses to come out even with their best techniques. One of the Rahaga suggests using "the secret hunting technique", and the Toa Hordika watch in fascination and confusion as whichever Rahaga volunteers to perform it...
And it becomes the goofiest dance they've ever seen. They can't believe anyone would even dance so strangely on purpose. Worse yet, they can't even believe it's even working! How is this working?!
Whenua is now questioning how this technique has the effect it does on rahi, and I would not be surprised if he didn't try to learn how to do it himself!
...Matau totally got hypnotized by the dance as well, tell me not 😂
(Inspiration for this random idea came from this Amphibia scene here.)

So, post reformation, We've seen the Turaga Metru deal with dysfunctional toa, amnesiac matoran, order of mara nui members, Takua...
But they've never dealt with children.
I've seen a bunch of posts about toa dealing with bby agori and having all the protective instincts.
But I want to know how each turaga deals with a little entourage of curious kids.
Nuju, for one, would be followed by a giggling group imitating his bird noises for better or worse. Eventually I can see him teaching them how to stargaze, and how he can tell the future in the skies above.
I can see the story circle surrounded by curious agori kids with wide eyes, listening to Vakama tell the legends to an enraptured audience.
Turaga Matau knows all the best songs, hands down. Agori parents are grateful to have their kids return exhausted after dancingbto the fast paced rhythm of le-koro music for a few hours.
Turaga Whenua and a group of children with endless curiousity? That's certainly a combination. give him a group of children and access to the new archives museum and That's a whole day right there.
Turaga Onewa and Turaga Nokama I'm actually not sure about, but I'm interested to hear your takes.

Couple of Turaga - 2
And here's the rest of the old bonkles~ I still feel as if I could do better with their shawl designs, but for the moment, I just wanted to share what I think all the Turaga look like!
From left to right is Nuju, Matau, and Whenua. I've started to stick to my choice of making Nuju a woman. It makes me feel better to read some of your tags in approval of the gender changes, that some of you don't mind ;v;
Either way, I hope you enjoy~

Canonically, among the Turaga Metru…
Vakama and Matau are best friends.
Onewa and Whenua seem the closest to each other, having gotten over a lot of the differences that they had as Toa.
Out of the other Turaga, Nokama is the only one Nuju is close to.
Interestingly, out of these dynamics, only the first one really gets much attention in the fandom. Partly because it was prominently featured in Web of Shadows, and maybe partly because the other two pairs weren’t highlighted as much in the narrative (Greg typically put the Toa Metru to work in pairs that had more obvious differences and frequent clashes of personalities). And perhaps it’s also because Matau and Vakama are often shipped together romantically, (sometimes with Nokama in there as well), whereas the other two pairs are seen more as literal sibling relationships.
I think those friendships are pretty fascinating in their own right though. Onewa having a chip on his shoulder and acting like a mean, jealous older brother to Whenua at first, perhaps assuming Onu-Matoran led a more sheltered and privileged life than the Po-Matoran. Whenua deflecting his remarks with sarcasm and forced nonchalance since he’s dealt with bullies before, always bracing himself for the next cutting remark. And Onewa coming to realise their experiences aren’t a different as they thought. Stone and Earth are brothers, and they both got the short end of the stick under Dume’s reign. Whenua trusting Onewa enough to not resist having the Komau used on him as part of an improvised plan, and not being mad about it after the fact. And the two of them developing the sport of Kohlii together as Turaga as a fun way for Matoran to resolve disputes.
Nokama and Nuju starting out seeing each other as respected colleagues and gradually becoming more like siblings as the story progresses. Nokama confiding in Nuju because she knows he trusts her judgement. Nuju giving Nokama a hug to comfort her, and she actually accepts the gesture (in contrast to her reaction to Matau trying the same). The two of them having a friendly sparring match on the boat. The pair watching winter sports together as Turaga. The other Turaga and Matoro deferring to Nokama when Nuju’s being difficult because he will at least listen to her.
There’s just some really nice aspects to those underrated friendships. I love them.
