PSA
If you are in the US and do your taxes, use the official IRS site for free filing!
Many companies will advertise free filing and then claim you have deductions or needs that require their paid solutions, and they will not tell you until the end of the process when you are exhausted and want it to be over. These ones are fully free and approved by the IRS!
Save yourself money and stress.

I just filed my taxes with the IRS and y’all. I didn’t owe a cent! Not for state taxes. Not for my inheritance fund. Not for anything.
Nothing locked behind a “premium account.”
It’s absolutely fantastic. I’m never using TurboTax ever again.

Hey its getting close to Tax Season again (by which I mean people SHOULD have their W-2's by now), so I just wanted to remind people:
IF YOU MAKE LESS THAN $80K PER YEAR, YOU SHOULD NOT PAY FOR ANY TAX SOFTWARE.
The IRS maintains a directory of partnered programs that will do your tax return for free.

Quick PSA since T*rboTax is getting worse and more predatory by the year—people with low-ish income (under $60k) qualify for free federal filing, and many for free state (AR, AZ, DC, GA, IA, ID, IN, KY, MA, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NT, OR, RI, SC, VA, VT, AND WV are free if you meet the qualifications for free federal) through TaxSlayer.
It's not quite as easy as T*rboTax, you have to input everything from the documents manually, which is initially intimidating, but it's really not that hard. Not only am I not paying $70 to TT for the privilege of filing my taxes, I'm getting back like $100 more than TT on top of that. And this year is rough for tax returns, we need all we can get.

Every year for the last SIX YEARS I have had an ugly crying melt down because of being unable to login to my e-file.com account. It's always the damn verification email that is blank, or the text that never comes.
This year I waited until the night before tax day and I broke down and went crawling to fvcking turbo tax.....

That time of year is coming, and since I haven't seen the annual post yet: Taxes
If you're in the same income bracket as me (and let's be honest, we've been pretty good about chasing away the billionaires), you should NEVER use Turbotax
Turbotax pays a loot of money in lobbying to ensure that your taxes stay complicated, so that you have to use them to file your taxes. The thing is! The IRS has a webpage that helps you find a service to do your taxes for free! They aren't allowed to advertise it (Thanks Intuit), but it is the cheat code to make your April 15th so much easier.
Here is the IRS service
I have personally used FreeTaxUSA off of the IRS's recommendation and I highly recommend it.
Remember: Lobbying is Bribery under any other name, and the actions of Turbotax and other corporate lobbyists are contemptible. but at least taxes don't have to suck as much as they want it to

hiya, different person- that ask is super helpful!!! I'm also wondering, if you're comfortable answering, how do taxes work with a job as a freelance/independent artist? I'm considering an art career too, but government stuff always scares the shit outta me to be honest lmao, it's the biggest thing holding me back. is it filed as like, a small business or something?
Hey!! Omg I’m so glad!! I know it was so much to read, I definitely got carried away ;; w ;; (and I once again....will be writing probably too much..here we go I am so sorry 😔🙏)
But yes! So I really recommend getting quickbooks self employed - I use it to keep track of my taxes (I have it linked up through my PayPal since everything processes through there) but you can add transactions manually as well!
But what’s nice with the quickbooks self employed is that you can set it up for quarterly tax payments (which is what I do) and pay through there! You have to get an EFTPS pin (which basically is just a government type pin that tells the IRS that you’re paying your taxes electronically)! It’s actually a pretty chill process and quickbooks sends gives you info/links how to do it!
AND it comes with turbotax which makes it a lot easier to file taxes in April!
I’m not sponsored hahaha but I really have enjoyed using the interface! It’s been super helpful!
And I forgot to say that it’s about $25 a month! Which I think is worth it for the amount that it does and keeps track of!
And also yes, you will probably be filing as Self-Employed (or usually it’s called Sole Proprietor on tax forms)!
So I ALSO used to get super scared about government things but I have become “Normal Amount of Paranoid” and I will tell you the two things that help me chill out A LITTLE BIT when money and government does the April Tango.
First is that you are probably not making much money (like me!), which sucks but ALSO means that the government doesn’t really care about you! These are my mother’s words and they bring me comfort!
Second, whenever I feel like the floor is spinning out the minute I have an OFFICIAL form in front of me: I just remember that it’s literally just filling in information! That’s it - you’re just answering questions! And if words don’t make sense - Google Is Your Friend! Search terms and read up! I do this every single year and I Won’t Stop!
Anyways, lots of information again but I hope this was helpful for you! 🙏💖💖💖💖

Hello everyone! When I was a teenager I did more tax returns in two years than most people do in a lifetime, and you all get to reap the benefits. Here are 9 things to know about doing your federal income taxes in the USA!
1. Bring snacks. You need snacks.
2. You probably don't have to pay TurboTax I swear there are other options
3. Search "IRS Freefile Program" to get free tax prep software if you make under like 70k.
4. Search "IRS VITA Program" to find people near you who will do your taxes for you for free if you make under like 70k. They're IRS-certified volunteers, and they're legit - they get trained and certified every year.
5. The main tax form, the 1040, is just a numbered list of instructions. The most complicated math you do is division, and for every single step 20 different websites have already written explanatory articles. The internet (probably) has your answers!
6. You'll probably have one of two types of income forms: W-2 (for employees) or 1099 (for "independent contractors" aka actual contractors, gig workers, and whoever else companies feel like fucking over).
If you got sent a 1099 form, I'm sorry. You'll probably owe money, from a double whammy of no taxes taken out of your check over the years and more taxes being taken from contractor income. Please make sure to mark down all your business expenses (including miles driven! That's a common one) so that your taxable income is a little lower.
7. Are you being claimed as a dependent on someone else's taxes? Are you claiming someone else as a dependent, and that someone is paying taxes this year? Everyone needs to be on the same page about who is or is not a dependent.
A dependent is (basically) someone who you paid for half or more of their living expenses. If someone claims you as a dependent, you have to note on your tax return that you are being claimed as a dependent.
Call if you're not sure whether someone will claim you or if you're not sure whether someone knows you'll claim them. It's a very common reason tax returns get rejected.
8. It's well known but it bears repeating: don't go to any tax return place that guarantees a tax refund. The only way to guarantee a refund is to do tax fraud.
9. Yeah the whole tax return system is needlessly complex and does not have to suck as much as it does. Fistbump of fellow-feeling, y'all 👊
Good luck, everyone! May your taxes be easy and your refund surprisingly large.
