A few things we learn about Malleus in Platinum Jacket:

He has had many, many tutors over the years who were brought from all over so he would receive only the finest education. He's a genius however, and whatever they taught him he could do better. He would get angry because he thought they were teaching him basics because they were looking down on him and would throw tantrums so terrible he would accidentally raze his grandma's garden with forest fires. Each and every one of his tutors end up packing their bags and resigning in fear of him. 😭 He'd get severely scolded by Lilia because of this.

Deuce comments that while Hades looks terrifying, his minions look goofy in comparison. Malleus tells him to never judge people based on appearances, as they'd never have been painted if they weren't competent. He also likens these minions to his bodyguards and shares how proud he'd be if they were to be lauded by the world and the succeeding generations in the future. (PROUD BIG BRO MOMENT)

He confirms that Briar Kingdom royalty choose their retainers at a certain age, which we can alreaddy conclude by the way he employed his goofy teenage knights and his mom chose the most radical/problematic generals back then.

He doesn't appreciate the servants in his castle waiting on him hand and foot. It's protocol so he can hardly do anything about it, but he was relieved when he enrolled at Night Raven and had to do everything himself.

Lilia instilled in him from a very young age that a person is nothing if they can't properly take care of themselves. He couldn't do this in the castle though, so he instead reads plenty of books on how to do household chores and whatnot. He's delighted to be able to put this knowledge to practical use at NRC.

He does mundane things like shopping and laundry by himself, until Sebek enrolled and tries to steal all his tasks lol. Although he's visibly disappointed, he lets Sebek do what he wants.

He actually knows how to use the washing machine and dryer but only after so many tries and difficulties.

He once washed his clothes in the kitchen sink and got caught doing it. His dormmates offered to do it instead (because he's their god lmao) but he refused because as he said, he likes to exert his own effort for things.

He is a good art critique and appreciates all kinds of art, though his favorite are sculptures. He likes to see the wears and tears of things over the years. He likes to see proof that things lived their lives (even inanimate things!), and that changes and ageing are beautiful.

He once again repeats that he loves gargoyles.

Though he adores the thought of being happy amongst others, he hates it when people are visibly happy and he isn't.

seriously though, this turned out to be harder to answer than I thought! I did actually manage to pull Stitch Lilia (THANK YOU TWSTFEST for the free bonus keys!) and he's absolutely adorable, I've literally been doing random battles just to watch him surf around and high-five Stitch. a fine addition to the Lilia collection!

in terms of proudest/most unbelievable achievement, that is 100% when I somehow managed to pull every single Scary Monsters card except one (only missing Rook!). I think I used up all my luck on that one, but at least it was for the Halloween cards! (after Scary Monsters and Glorious Masquerade, I'm so afraid of what this year's Halloween event is going to be, what if they look amazing how am I supposed to save my keys nooooo)

if I REALLY have to pick one, though...there is actually one card that I think I would call my favorite! he just makes me happy every time I look at him. :>

SIT DOWN, Y'ALL IT'S A DOOZY AND YOU'LL NEED IT

The new characters are Ferro Honest and Gideru/Gidel/Gidell, the latter of which is not voiced. However, Ferro Honest will be voiced by Tomokazu Sugita!!

Some new event images!! The new event is called "Stage in Playful Land ~Dancing Puppets and the Fantastical Theme Park~"! The boys will be headed to "Playful Land", an amusement park of illusions. They've been specially invited by the two new characters. You get to forget all your worries and have fun all day, no need to pay! Maybe you'll even become a star... Hey, why not just skip school and stay here forever? How shady! There has to be a catch to it...

NEW CARDS TIME!!!!!

First up, the Rs (Trey, Jack, Jade, Lilia)! You can automatically see that the poses are very dynamic and incorporate ribbons. They look like they're being puppeteered on strings!! You'll also notice that they still have the eye masks, just with a different overall outfit theme than in Glorious Masquerade.

Next, the SRs (Cater, Leona, Floyd, Vil)! asdihlbaoyfeqfba They all look like they're having so much fun moving around their limbs and posing~

Last, but not least, the SSRs (Ace, Kalim, Ortho)! THEY'RE ALL SO DRAMATIC (especially Ace, look at him hamming it up)... It's really rare to see this kind of an expression on Kalim too, so it's a treat! Ortho was practically a given because of the Pinocchio inspiration of this event, but it's still so great to see the confirmation.

Yana-sensei was inspired by marionettes while designing this line of cards! She paid special attention to the patchwork in the clothes (there are even some easter eggs in there, particularly on the SSR trio). THE NEW HALLOWEEN EVENT STARTS ON THE 20TH 🤡THAT'S THE END OF THIS WEEK.... . . .. ............ . . .. . . .... . . .. . . . .

Ooh, new event merch! Keychains and scarves, plus a large holographic acrylic block with the Platinum Jacket Grim initial art.

Floating Coffins and Floating Portraits

So I’ve been rewatching some of the TWST events in order to collect screenshots for theories (my hobbies are incredible), and this line from the first Halloween event (Terror is Trending) didn’t have much of an impact on me at first. It made perfect sense that the Diasomnia dorm would be Extra with their Halloween decor and make it float with their magical talents. But today, I realized something significant about the coffins in the Mirror Chamber.

They’re *floating.* Every single time we see them, let it be in the game or in a summoning animation, the coffins are also constantly moving around. And all the other students in the Halloween event sounded shocked that Diasomnia could maintain this magic for many days 24/7. It’s something seemingly simple, but takes a lot of magic to maintain. And remember, it is shocking for an entire DORM to work together to maintain this magic for a WEEK.

But with the coffins, who is maintaining this? (Spoiler alert I obviously think it’s Crowley but I gotta lead up to it 🤪)

The Fairy Gala event is centered around the special magestone in NRC being stolen by fairies. Crowley claims this magestone is what regulated temperatures in the school because of the fairies using the magestone. I thought about this magestone being a possible source for this floating, but it didn’t make sense to me. As silly Crowley acts like, from a practicality standpoint it would make no sense to burden both the fairies and the magestone with something like this. Plus, this magestone has only been mentioned for temperature control inside the school

So I was trying to think of any other location where items float like this for seemingly no reason. I couldn’t really think of any prominent sources, until…

Crowley’s office. The portraits of the Great Seven are just floating there! They don’t move like the coffins do, but they’re clearly floating. I wondered if it’s just a natural feature of these portraits (much like that one talking portrait guy in Book 1), but in Grim’s Platinum Jacket card, the museum clearly has them hung up on a wall. And since portraits of the Overblotters are floating, it makes sense that these portraits can be selected as a special showcase to use this draining magic on.

But isn’t it interesting these the coffins and these portraits are heavily related to Crowley? Crowley is in charge of the entire coffin-gate system in the first place, and is the only one with the key to open these gates. And the portraits are literally in Crowley’s office. It’s clear he’s very devoted to these portraits, as one of his Unified Exam voicelines reveals he wipes the frames of each one every single day.

The main game have been taking course over many months now in the school year. And yet, these coffins and the portraits are always floating when we see them. Is Crowley maintaining these 24/7 ALL YEAR LONG? If so, that’s an incredible yet very subtle display of magic! NRC is practically bathed in magic, so that could be what’s maintaining these floating objects too. But again, it’s the same cycle of “who imbued NRC with this scale of magic?” And most importantly, why “waste” magic in these objects like coffins and portraits? These must have some significance in some way, because it’s interesting TWST dropped this detail of floating magic being a draining type of magic to maintain. The Dark Mirror is also floating, whereas the Magic Mirror in Snow White was hung up on a wall. Perhaps this connects back to Dark Mirror (and whoever is inside it 🤪) in some way? The coffins in particular may have a story significance, because there’s the Great 7, 7 coffins, and 7 Overblots. Hmm…

Crowley has constantly showed passive forms of magic. I go more in detail in this post here, but he canonically has powerful barriers that can withstand Overblot attacks, can whip up items like magestone collar for Grim without difficultly. And as we can see with Deuce, summoning takes a lot of imagination and skill to do successfully.

Additionally, in the manga, Crowley has a controlled fire on his fingertip. Maybe it’s not visually impressive at first, but look at Grim and how he flings fireballs all over the place. He has very little control of how he releases his fire magic, and likely wouldn’t be able to keep it so controlled with this level of precision like Crowley does at his fingertip. I think it can be done by any trained mage, especially adult ones, but let me show off Crowley sndhdjjaa 🤣 But this line is interesting that “the more one focuses on the effects their magic can produce, the more precise and powerful it will be.”

Basically this theory is just me gushing over Crowley again haha, but I really do think Crowley has powerful scale of magic. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was even one of the “top 5 mages in the whole world” that Malleus is a part of. Because if Crowley is truly responsible for the floating coffins and portraits, my birbman is just blatantly showing off and no one even notices!!! 😭😭😭😭 (Except me of course 🤪👉👈)

Edit: @kitwasnothere mentioning that Crowley is not beating the Overblot allegations is SO REAL. When Riddle Overblotted, he seamlessly lifted up the ground and the rose trees because of his OB magic. All the Overblotters influence their environment in some way, like Leona’s sand, Malleus’ thorns, etc. Maybe Crowley is not only being dramatic af (as he should), but if he is indeed in an Overblot state, perhaps he affects these significant objects tied to him? Or perhaps his Overblot is how NRC is “magically infused.” Hmm just something else to think about🐦‍⬛

Bonus points to the school Library as well with the floating books. I don’t think these floating books hold any particular significance- perhaps magic tomes just do that? Or perhaps a side effect of the school campus being magically infused. Just wanted to point this out ٩( 'ω' )و

~ Malleus and the washing machine ~

OMG! Malleus does his own laundry and shopping because Lilia taught him that it's important that one should know how to live independently. He boasts about knowing how to use the washing machine and those electrical thingamabobs because he studied hard from books. 😭 Deuce is so shocked because why the hell would someone need to study how to use a washing machine...

Until Sebek enrolled and so enthusiastically volunteered to do Malleus' laundry. 😭 Him being a supportive older brother couldn't possibly refuse.

"Back when I was newly admitted here, there was no shortage of times when I struggled to get used to things. And in the laundry room... There was a time when I attempted to handwash my clothes in the kitchen instead because I did not know where the laundry room was."

"... The students who saw me in the kitchen then had a very similar expression to yours."

He then shares that though he uses magic to wash his clothes like he did back home, he makes a point to regularly use the washing machine too!

"And after much trials and tribulations, not only have I mastered the use of the washing machine, but the dryer as well."

~ Malleus and art ~

He and Deuce were going around browsing the paintings, and Deuce noted that Malleus seems to be good at understanding the details and the meanings behind a painting. Malleus reveals that he's well-versed in art critique as part of his royal education.

"I rather enjoy art appreciation. Though compared to paintings... I especially like sculptures."

Deuce asks if the sculptures he's talking about are those models of stone and bronze so Mal confirms he's right. He also shares that these sculptures may sometimes be used as a landscape decoration, and if they're not taken care of regularly, through wind and storm, their appearances may change completely over the years.

"Though some may see it as "deterioration"... Personally I see the transformation in stone and bronze to be rather tasteful."

"Because when you clearly see how different they are from their original appearance, it's as if they've lived for a very long time."

Malleus wraps the statue talk up by telling Deuce that should he ever wish to know more about statues, just ask for him. Not only will he talk about statues, but GARGOYLES as well. Deuce accidentally wonders what gargoyles are, then Malleus goes full-on NEURON ACTIVATION mode and almost starts rambling about gargoyles when Deuce cuts him off by saying Riddle wants him to see the painting of the card soldiers while there, so he's running off now. 😭

After translating, I choose to believe Jade and Floyd’s Platinum vignettes reveal their love attachment styles.

Jade takes his time gorging himself then leaves behind the bones, picked clean.

Floyd holds on tight, takes painful little nibbles, then keeps the scraps under his bed until they rot.

Meanwhile, Azul lets go of Nothing, but everything he keeps always has its purpose.

It’s ugly but it’s poetic and reminds me of merfolk myths saying they like to horde shiny and colorful objects.

Perhaps, in a way, Octa hordes each other.

Hi Raven! Have you seen the Disney 100 Jack birthday card art that has been circulating around yet? Any thoughts on the paintings? I think I remember you mentioning that the portraits would be good for figuring out what inspirations more ambiguous characters like Jack were twisted from.

The idea that the background frames for the new birthday series would reveal the explicit Disney reference for each TWST boy was popular fandom speculation when Platinum Suit Jamil was initially teased, NOT something actually ever confirmed, stated, or even implied by official TWST sources. Some people were also speculating that maybe the background frames were just the respective G7 of each boy's dormitory. We only had Jamil to go off of at the time, which didn't give us a lot of clear information since Jamil is both very clearly twisted from Jafar but is also in Scarabia, a dorm which has also has Jafar as its representative from the Great 7.

Then Platinum Jacket Ace came out in late September and seemed to continue the pattern of "the background shows one image that shows direct inspiration for the TWST boy"; there were heart card soldiers in one frame, which is what Ace seems to be twisted from. This made a lot of fans hype to finally get character inspiration confirmation for more ambiguous characters like Jack (which has been an ongoing debate in the fandom for years now).

***Spoilers for the main story, as well as Jack's Platinum Suit initial art + related discussion below the cut!***

... However, that ended up not being the case as soon as Jack's Platinum Suit card preview was released. Which brings us to today 😅 I think you see what the "issue" here is, right??? How can Jack, a wolf beastman, possibly be based on Rafiki, a baboon??? Mmmm, I don't have really anything to add regarding the actual frames? It is what it is, and though I will admit it got my hopes up when Jamil was first revealed, I also suspected it would be a long shot given how eclectic ("borrowing from many sources") some of the characters are.

I guess it was presumptuous for us to jump to a conclusion when we only knew about Jamil and even when we also knew about Ace; the problem is that two in a row doesn't make a pattern, just a coincidence. We need at least three to establish a pattern, and Jack here disrupts it. What we actually see here is that the frame to our left (the character's right) is likely just the painting the birthday boy chooses as a decoration for the Guest Room. (It is listed as “[Character’s] chosen painting” in Sam’s shop.) Alternatively, maybe some boys will have their character inspo if it is very clear (like how Jamil is twisted from Jafar) while the non-determinant characters like Ortho will get some other Disney character from the same film (ie Pain/Panic, the Fates, etc.) rather than a single specific inspo.

I think the TWST fandom is like... very fixated on picking ONE exact character that corresponds to each TWST boy just because the dorm leaders (ie the most iconic group in marketing) have clear inspirations. That expectation then gets extended to the rest of the cast, even though it's not true that everyone only takes inspiration from their own films--even the dorm leaders make references to and allude to various Disney properties. There's no harm in debating, having your own interpretation, or drawing parallels for fun, but it gets to a point where it's... fruitless??? To try to come to a firm conclusion on the subject. It may be less contentious to accept that some of the cast are a blend of inspirations, ideas, and motifs. Even the more "concrete" characters can functionally serve in multiple different roles or as correlates to many different Disney characters. Azul is twisted from Ursula, but he is also able to be Jamil's "Genie in the Lamp" (a line which Jamil actually uses to refer to Azul) for book 4. Vil is twisted from the Evil Queen, but he is the hero Hercules when he sacrifices his youth to rescue Idia from Tartarus. At the same time, you could argue that Ortho (who is very Pinocchio-esque, going from robot to "real boy"), also has Hercules traits and Vil is serving as a dual role as Megara, the damsel in distress. (More on that in this post!)

None of the TWST characters are bound to one movie or to the characters they're supposedly based off of, and this works to the IP's advantage. It allows each character to feel like their own person, not just a copy of or a reinvention of one Disney counterpart.
