Kaizo he no yakudou, Guernica (1982)

Listen to Kaizo he no yakudou [A Lively Thrust Towards Reconstruction] without context and you’ll be befuddled beyond belief. Fronted by the manic, angelic wails of Jun Togawa (this early in her career, her voice was certainly no less potent), she and Koji Ueno combined rattling drum machines with synthesised accordion, eerie haunted house melodies, surreal yodelling and absurd songwriting and composition. If one didn’t know the aim of Guernica – to ridicule conservative nostalgia for pre-war Japan through combining this music with periodically-accurate 1930s costumes and propagandistic imagery – it might even seem flatly unappealing. With knowledge of its intentions, however, and the genius of Togawa and Ueno (plus the production of YMO’s Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi) is clear. Is Kaizo he no yakudou actually enjoyable? I’m not so sure. But it’s certainly fascinating.

For four young men, love and intimacy are in the air, even though they may not be aware of it. Sensitive Pornograph holds within it two tales of sexual romance for two different couples of men. The first is a tale between two manga artists, Seiji Yamada and Sono Hanasaki. Both are familiar with each other's work, though upon meeting each other, Seiji is shocked to find out that Sono is actually a man, ten years his senior. Love quickly blossoms between the two, but will soon be tested when Seiji begins to hear rumors about Sono's past sexual exploits.

In the second tale, Koji Ueno is a part-time pet sitter, hired to take care of a rabbit named Aki for a new client. To Koji's complete surprise though, not only is there no rabbit in the house, but the only thing in the apartment is a bound and gagged man in the closet who says that he is Aki. More troubling than this is that Aki informs Koji that they are both in danger of upsetting the client, and the only way for Koji to get out safely is for them to make love together.

Two stories, four men, and the one emotion of love that unites them all in the new twists their lives have taken.

These are essentially *orn with plot, they don't have much substance to them though, they focus more on the... aesthetics. This "Recommendation" is more of just information, I'm letting you guys know these exists and are available for anyone who is interested. Be warned though these are very explicit.

It's Gadget appreciation week.

Over the years I have acquired quite a few items related to the game - more than I could show in a single picture - in order to expand my research and preparation for the profile article and interview I reposted earlier this week. I must also admit these objects reflect a certain desperation in my attempts to obtain a deeper understanding of the intricacy of this game's message. The genuine value behind these iterations of Gadget is that they do not necessarily answer any questions that may linger after playing either edition of the game. At best, they provide materials with which to formulate additional interpretations and observe the plenitude of Gadget from a wider angle.

But they do offer small pieces of information about the large-scale production that was Gadget. For example, the Japanese Macintosh edition of Invention, Travel and Adventure (bottom right) is the only one to identify Hirokazu Nabekura, who co-developed the story of the game with Shono, followed by what appears to be his own label at the time, VALIS. This minute detail, by itself, laid to rest any doubts as to whether the markedly Dickian themes present in the games were merely the product of chance. Or, for instance, the mention of the word "thought crime" in two texts from Inside Out, which equally confirm Orwell as another source of inspiration. I already knew of their appreciation for Stanislaw Lem from my exchanges with Shono in 2008-2009.

I am also reminded that I peformed a small interview with the soundtrack composer, Koji Ueno, which I recently recovered and that can be read here; and that perhaps I may have something more to contribute by making some of the content of the exceedingly elusive disc "Preview & Reprise" available online (edit: you can find the P&R post here).

The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour - 009 07/13/23 Defy TV 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM EST Filmed at the Good Time Theatre at Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania

SEGMENT ONE (NINE MINUTES):

- The show opened with an In Memoriam tribute to Pennsylvania independent wrestling legend Love Bug.

- Sudu Upadhyay narrated over a series of still photographs recapping the action from CORE's live event this past Friday. We transition from this to a shot at the commentary booth where Sudu welcomes back his broadcast partner "The Living Legend" Larry Zbyszko who is wearing a brace on his knee and flanked by wrestler MV Young. Zbyszko is gloating about the series of defeats suffered by Kerry Morton's "Knights of the Kid's Table" including being abandoned by Nick Wayne and Billie Starkz. Zbyszko said he brought MV Young here to watch his back, but apparently the only wrestler in that group with the guts to show up for this taping is Kylie Paige who is in action next against STARDOM’s Utami Hayashishita. Sudu points out that Utami Hayashishita made it to the semi-finals of the 2022 Trios Kingdom tournament, but due to the uncertainty of her future in the Queen's Quest faction including this excursion to the US, another team will represent the STARDOM office in the 2023 Trios Kingdom.

- Queen Aminata was filming some bumpers for Defy TV. In the middle of a read for Forged In Fire she sees Raychell Rose off screen. The camera follows Aminata as she makes her way to Raychell. Aminata tells her that Athena knows Rose is a bit disappointed about her loss to Aminata, so Athena wanted to give Raychell a gift. Aminata handed a large envelope to Raychell Rose, who then opened it and appeared puzzled by the contents.

SEGMENT TWO (EIGHT MINUTES):

- We come back from break to the CORE news desk with Daphne Oz for the Coal Region Roundup. - Daphne gives a more detailed recap of The Long Mirror Of Time and breaks the news that Titus Alexander was scheduled to return to the Coal Region after a wrestling show in San Francisco, but he canceled the flight and opted to remain in California. Alexander was visibly very troubled by his loss to Roderick Strong. CORE officials have spoken to Titus and both sides are open to his return. - Daphne Oz announced the first two teams that will be receiving an automatic at large entry into Trios Kingdom 2023. Representing Major League Wrestling, the first entrants into Trios Kingdom 2023 will be Raven's faction The Calling represented by AKIRA, Rickey Shane Page, and Delirious. The second team entering Trios Kingdom will be joining us from the DDT promotion in Japan. In Trios Kingdom 2022, The 37KAMIINA were eliminated in the second round by eventual tournament winners The Last Wave. The 37KAMIINA will be entering the 2023 tournament with a slightly altered lineup. Out is Shunma Katsumata and MAO and Yuki Ueno return with their new partner Toi Kojima. Oz also announced that MAO will be in singles action later in this broadcast. - Daphne closed the Roundup out with announcements for CORE's event on August 5th as part of the West Scranton Little League Carnival. There will be a Trios Kingdom qualifying match taking place that evening in addition to the Risky Raffle. And the first participant in the Risky Raffle can be announced - Lio Rush will be making his return to CORE on August 5th.

- The match was followed by the debut of a new talk show segment on the Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour. The set is comprised of a variety of props you'd associate with a stage magician, a large box with a rack of ornate swords beside it, a small round table covered with a long table cloth, a chest with a variety of items on top such as decks of cards, handcuffs, and even a pistol. Our host Jarek 1:20 welcomed us into The Magic Shop. Jarek brings out his first guests, Derek Dillinger and Ziggy Haim of The Production. Jarek has Dillinger select and memorize a card before returning it to the deck, which he does while blaming their loss to the TrustBusters Reserve on "supporting actors" like Al Deniro, Katie Arquette, and Dom Kubrick. Dillinger said The Production had a director, and a Final Girl, but what they need is a Leading Man. Derek Dillinger brought Magnum CK on to The Magic Shop. While Magnum CK introduced himself, Jarek 1:20 produced a card, the jack of diamonds and asked Dillinger if this was his card. Derek responded that he didn't know as he wasn't really paying attention to him earlier. Jarek said that's okay, because that isn't his card, but they should check Ziggy Haim's right pocket. Ziggy pulled out a three of spades which Jarek 1:20 claimed was Derek's card. Dillinger said he'd have to take Jarek's word for it.

SEGMENT FOUR (SEVEN MINUTES):

MAO vs. Mighty Mante MAO defeated Mighty Mante with the 450 splash. (4:15)

- A video recorded backstage aired featuring Afa Jr., Sean Maluta, and Journey Fatu. Afa Jr. introduced his group, The Family Tree, and spoke on the importance of blood. Afa described himself as their Tribe Elder called on Maluta and Fatu to appreciate him. Maluta and Fatu voiced their support for their uce. Afa revealed that their legal representative The Smart Guy has secured them a qualifying match for entry into the 2023 Trios Kingdom tournament.

SEGMENT FIVE (NINE MINUTES):

Trios Kingdom 2023 Qualifying Match Jake Something, Vincent Nothing, and Giant Baba Yaga (with UltraMantis Black) vs. Miracle Ones (Dustin Waller, Ichiban, and Kylon King) Jake Something, Vincent Nothing, and Giant Baba Yaga defeated Miracle Ones with a running neckbreaker from Baba Yaga to Waller. (7:45)
