7 Korean Dramas that Faced Netizens’ Backlash
Tumblr media
Korean Dramas are not only a purpose of entertainment to us fans but those are a mode of escapism from daily life blues. Most of the time Korean dramas are fun and fulfilling, sometimes, though, they are disappointing, and sometimes they face some kind of complicated and mixed reactions. On rare occasions Korean dramas face huge backlash from the netizens.
In Korean Drama history there are more than one drama to be canceled or cut short due to the unbound backlash that those faced. And today I am going to offer you 7 of those Korean dramas, which were either canceled or cut short due to netizen’s backlash.
So, without wasting any more time, let’s get into the list!
10 Korean Dramas that were cut short or canceled
1. Wolf (2006)
In the 2006 Korean drama Wolf, Eric Mun, a beloved figure in the Korean entertainment scene, was originally cast to portray Bae Dae-chul. The storyline revolved around a romantic rivalry between Bae Dae-chul and Han Ji-soo, played by Han Ji Min, both vying for the affection of Yoon Sung-mo, portrayed by Uhm Tae Woong.
Tumblr media
The production of Wolf was progressing smoothly until an unfortunate incident occurred during filming. Both lead actors, Mun and Uhm, suffered injuries when they were accidentally struck by a stunt car. This unforeseen setback forced an immediate halt in production.
Initially, there was optimism that filming would resume once Mun and Uhm recovered from their injuries. However, as time passed, a series of postponements ensued, eventually leading to the regrettable decision to cancel the entire project.
The incident not only impacted the physical well-being of the two actors but also dealt a significant blow to the momentum and continuity of the production. The cancellation left fans disappointed, as they were eagerly anticipating the resolution of the complex love triangle that had been unfolding.
Despite the setback, the legacy of Wolf endures as a testament to the unpredictable challenges that can arise in the world of television production, where even the most carefully planned projects can be derailed by unforeseen circumstances.
2. A Beautiful Mind (2016)
A modern reinterpretation of the timeless Frankenstein narrative, 2016 Korean drama Beautiful Mind centered around Lee Young-oh, impeccably portrayed by Jang Hyuk, a neurosurgeon renowned for his technical prowess but severely lacking in empathy. The plot unfolded within the confines of a hospital, where Lee Young-oh found himself entangled in the perplexing enigma of unexplained deaths.
Tumblr media
Originally slated for a 16-episode run, the fantastical Korean drama faced an abrupt truncation, concluding prematurely at the 14th episode mark. The decision to curtail its run was prompted by subpar viewership ratings that failed to meet expectations.
Despite its initial promise, the show grappled with dwindling audience engagement, reflected in its highest Nielsen Korea rating of 4.7% during the third episode. Unfortunately, this peak was short-lived, as subsequent episodes witnessed a gradual decline in viewership, culminating in a modest 2.8% rating for its penultimate showing.
The untimely demise of the series left its narrative threads dangling, and the abbreviated episode count disappointed both fans and critics who had anticipated a more extensive exploration of the intriguing storyline.
In the fickle landscape of television, where audience reception plays a pivotal role, the fate of this modern Frankenstein adaptation serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of viewer preferences and the challenging terrain that TV productions navigate.

Empress Ki made me think of Queen Seon Duk, another huge hit about a powerful queen where the original planned love story (between her and her advisor Yu Shin played by the then A-lister Uhm Tae Woong) got abandoned for a different one due to actor chemistry. To me, QSD, which came out in 2009, is probably the most epic scene stealing example in all my years of kdrama watching. Because on screen came then not well known supporting actor Kim Nam Gil playing Bidam and stole the male lead slot, the love story and all the fandom. QSD made him a star but also gave me one of my fave MLs in period dramas. The fact that he hasn’t made a sageuk (if you don’t count the fact that Live Up to Your Name is half set in Joseon) since then is a crime.

now I checked out of the first season of Arthdal Chronicles around the middle mainly due to it's flimsy and clunky setup and fantasy worldbuilding and very slow character development. It was doing my head it, it was confusing but mostly it was just quite boring and stiff to sit through. It felt like the usual brilliant writers that gave us Six Flying Dragons (best kdrama ever) and Deep Rooted Tree and Queen Seonduk (which I struggled through for a long time because of the unfunny side characters and the utterly charmless male lead that was Uhm Tae-woong) were trying to do too much at once and failing in introducing characters and their motives, the political side of things and the worldbuilding. So none of it was done to justice.
Now, usually that would mean that one would not pick up the second season of Arthdal Chronicles once it airs… but I am nothing but a simple girl who has been waiting for too long for Lee Junki to get back to sageuks where he truly shines (he does do some good thrillers tho, can't forget Flower of Evil). And I do have hopes that with the clunky worldbuilding and all of that vague fantasy stuff has been left in season 1 and we can actually enjoy some good writing, characters and political maneuvering and intrigue in season 2.
Or at the very least get to see Lee Junki look good in historical clothing and swinging a sword around and doing cool stunts.
It is a bit hard to comment on this show due to the nature of the subs that I found… which were decent enough, but it sort of felt like it had been google translated from korean to english and then very roughly read through. And not everything was subbed yet, so I am going to wait a day more before I head on into ep 2.
Episode one had some clunky re-introduction going on. I remember roughly which characters were witch, even if I only watched like half of season 1 in 2019… but I also read so recaps to know what's going on and catch up on things.
The vague fantasy worldbuilding is still there, but it's much more in the background this time around because, like I had hoped, some of it had just been left behind in season 1. They expect everyone to sort of get it by now. And I do think the character motivations are very clear and solid this time around, since the characters don't have to wait for the setup of the story to have finished and all of that to have something to do.
I don't find myself being terribly invested in anything happening as of now, but that's okay. Not every story can manage that right away. And I got plenty of Lee Junki swinging a sword and stuff. He flew up in the air and kicked people and I enjoyed it. But I sort of was mending two socks while some of the other stuff in the episode were happening… so it's probably going to be one of those shows. Ether it hooks me at some point where it get's my full attention, it entertains me enough for me to watch it without all of my braincells turned on, or I drop it… like I did with season 1… about half way through.
I don't see this show being a high priority for me, but I don't see it boring me to death or anything… yet.

Awesome Korean Films:
I am going to start choosing and pinning a favourite Korean film once a week, starting (18/7/21)
Family // 가족 (2004) Directed by Lee Jung-chul // 이정철
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(a little insight into how the film came to be)
A parent scolds his daughter and son for making a mistake and gives them milk and says "I love you." There is a young man who makes his mother laugh by playing trot songs and dancing all kinds of crazy dances, while on the other hand, there are interviews with ordinary people who aspire to their father's life. These are family-themed commercials that you can easily watch when you turn on TV. In the movie, more than ever, "family love"-themed works are booming. Such a warm family is more valuable in this tough world due to tough crimes and recession. If there is only love and comfort in this era that do not consider the conditions, it is because of family. So family is more valuable.
Father and daughter.
They have very little stereotyped sentiment, such as the love of mother and daughter, and the deep loyalty of father and daughter. As my little daughter, who said, "I'm going to marry my dad when I grow up," grows older after puberty, it becomes very awkward and uncomfortable to be with her father. The film family captures the sad madness of a father and daughter that has never been properly dealt with. It depicts how they forgive and reconcile each other, who have already been separated by a long conflict, without a single warm word.
