(that's a rhetorical statement, i know why.) the actors already gave us the lovely line "Dream is the cast bicycle" so i think people should run with that and diversify the ecosystem.

hello there!! sorry if this took a while for me to reply, i didn't realize i had any asks so i did not know this was here and idk when you sent it!

soooo i unfortunately am not equipped to talk about the general canon (fanon?) of this since i am not in the heads of all writers haha HOWEVER i can give my thoughts as to why i think this is the case! and I'm going to keep it as PG as possible by speaking more from a "taking the lead in the relationship" perspective, even if just from a physical/making the move aspect, because i personally think that i often see them going go hand in hand in what i’ve read. but LET ME CAVEAT that, again, i am not speaking for everyone, just my thoughts since you asked, and i will also caveat that the connections I'm drawing are not rules - so, when i say "i see Gon as acting this way or doing this thing, that is why i think the connection to XYZ is being made, or why he is then written into fanfics as being this ABC archetype", i am not saying it as a definite or as an expectation for how these relationships/actions/etc. would manifest themselves every time or irl!!! so please do not take it as such, relationships are very personal and not one size fits all and not like "well if you act THIS way, you will always be THIS person in the relationship". ok disclaimer over but i just want to make that v clear.

so, i personally view Gon as the more explicitly forward and outspoken one between the two of them. we all know Gon is shameless, and i think many authors (including myself) write him as such. i think it's easy to draw a connection between shameless -> speaks his mind no matter what -> doesn't worry about getting embarrassed -> shares his feelings first -> makes the first move -> makes suggestions for progression of relationship. also we know that Gon is obviously strong and loves that about himself, so if he can showcase his strength in other ways I'm sure that plays into it - like showing that he's also HEADstrong, strong in his convictions and emotions, strong in his sense of self, is STRONGly sure of their relationship... you get the point. so me personally, as i write, i will usually write Gon in ways that bring in these beliefs that I have about him by writing him as being pretty forward, extroverted and social and outgoing, maybe making the first move, etc., but i will caveat that with saying that as sure of yourself as you are, you can also get nervous or flustered or whatever, so i also include that into his character when it feels right. with that logic, i'd imagine that that is why authors would write Gon into that position (no pun intended), but i personally don't write explicit content so this is just my personal rationale.

for Killua, i think a lot of people view him as a polar opposite in a lot of ways - not excessively sure of himself (you could argue that at the end of the anime he is, but a lot of ppl I know that resonate with his character specifically resonate with the version of him that is struggling with a sense of self and purpose and consciously being beholden to, and affected by, others' expectations of him), VERY easily flustered, etc. i think it's very common that, when people talk about their relationship, they talk about killua NOT being the first to admit feelings, NOT being the first to make a move (unless he can do so in a half-jokingly, "oh you don't feel the same haha well i was OBVIOUSLY KIDDING YOU DUMBASS I JUST WANTED TO SEE YOUR FACE LOOOL" way), and NOT being the one to really, fully make himself vulnerable first. have i seen him written this way? yes. and it often makes sense when i do depending on the story itself! but I'm speaking from a more generalized, "what i see most frequently" perspective since that's the context of the question. so, given all of that, i think authors will take him "not taking the lead" and write him into also not taking the lead physically, at least not in the stereotypical sense - since, if we want to be extremely verbose and accurate, we need to acknowledge that "positions" in a sexual relationship do not always relate to "positions" in the emotional part of the relationship, or to personalities, or to anything else. sometimes they do but sometimes they don't! but if we want to guess as to why this seems to be a common theme, I'm assuming that sometimes that line can be drawn by relating these pieces of their characters/personalities to the other aspects of their relationship.

WHEW ok that was a longer answer than i expected! just want to reiterate that these are my personal thoughts as to why i think we see this "theme" often - i don't know for sure since i do not personally write this genre of explicit content, but those are just my two cents; also want to reiterate my emphasis on these not being hard and fast rules for relationships, there isn't always a correlation between how a person acts in the bedroom and outside of the bedroom, and there isn't one right answer for how these two are portrayed in any setting in any type of relationship IMO - so much of it comes down to the writing itself, how/why they are written the way that they are in a particular fic, and what we as readers take away from the fic. this is especially important since so many people have so many different preferences of writing, characterization, etc.!!!!

hay, this is more me looking for advice, but how do i stop lying to my followers about being proship? there was one point where i drew fontcest (undretale), and i got an anti who harassed me in ask, and sent me a graphic description of their brother killing their hamster. ever since i've been very weary of saying anything, or confirming i ship something cuz i don't want to read something like that again. that, and in general, i don't ship things too hard/go all in with it, at least 1/?

2/? i don't think i do. granted, i draw a bunch of art and post it, but for me that's just general hyperfixation. i'm also ace, and while yes, most ships are romantic or sexual, mine tend to be platonic, or suggestive. and are not as clear cut as to if i ship the characters or not, because even for me, it's up in the air, and i don't know, i'm not good with knowing how i feel about things, i just express myself through art and hope it says all it needs to. i've come up with a sorta tagging

Buuut i mean... I can see why youre upset. I dont think you should have to come out and say you're proship. Being an anti shouldn't be seen as the default. You should also be able to make whatever kind of content you want as long as you tag it properly. If your fanbase is making you feel like you can't, then that fanbase isn't your demographic.

There are actually a lot of decent people out here who are pro ship, and if you choose to be openly pro ship, yes you will get some hate mail, death threats, suibait etc and lose followers, but you will also gain a lot of fans who want to see your interesting takes on different interpersonal dynamics. (Also, the former group weren't really your fans in the first place if they'll be so godawful to you over some pixels on a screen)

And yes it is impossible to police thousands of followers and that quite literally is not supposed to be up to you. Minors on the internet are supposed to be monitored by their guardians. If you put a disclaimer/tag for your content and some dumbass clicks it anyway and doesn't like what they see, that's their fault not yours.

I've also noticed that the majority of people who are pro ship are prone to actually filtering content they don't like, while antis seem entitled and want the creator to do it for them. Its just a better fanbase experience all around in my experience.

As someone who helps run multiple pro ship accs, i understand the visibility can be scary. But I promise at the end of the day you'll feel a lot better for it. Hope this is at least semi-helpful/reassuring idk ❤

(don’t rb this i’m just kinda rambling and also not good at Words) all i gotta say to anyone interested in watching DS9 is that first of all, it’s a great show but like everything it still has its problems (some can be attributed to bad writing/showrunners, just generally iffy 90′s tropes, etc.). the first episode is long and pretty intense and often draws ppl in pretty quickly, but the first season overall is a bit hit or miss sometimes. it’s got some goofy episodes but also some that are like. shockingly good (not that some of the goofy ones aren’t good). it definitely picks up a bit more during season 2, but season 3 is when it really gets into the main plot that’ll unfold throughout the rest of the show it’s a show that’s simultaneously batshit ridiculous but can also be Very serious and imo, often does both of those better than the other star trek shows i’ve seen. it goes over some pretty heavy topics and can be genuinely heart-wrenching and even uncomfortable at times, but there’s also pretty equal amounts comedic slice-of-life type episodes (or at least b-plots to otherwise more serious episodes). it has a very A+ cast of characters, some villains i legitimately despise with my entire being (which is good ! despicable ppl but great characters), and compared to the rest of the star trek series, it’s kinda its own thing entirely. it takes place on a space station for the majority of it rather than a ship, and has a long overarching story instead of just the usual more episodic thing most other trek shows have going on anyway, anyone following me knows DS9 is my favorite thing in the world and it makes me so happy when ppl start watching it because of me, but i just want ppl to be aware that it’s.....weird. like genuinely weird and not always in a good way (especially if it’s your first star trek, but i guess it depends on the person ?) and there’s even a handful of episodes i’d insist ppl just skip entirely, but i still think it’s a fantastic show overall and deserves a lot more love than it originally got last thing i wanna say is for anyone interested in it because of my quark posts specifically........he’s a nasty little dude. like legitimately he’s not the best person (but still a better person than he wants to be. in fact he saves the day plenty of times) but he’s also weirdly charming and charismatic to the point of being lovable anyway even if you wanna smack him sometimes. he’s awful and also my absolute favorite character unfortunately i have a LOT more i could say about DS9 because there’s so much of it i don’t talk about enough on here but this is just like. a brief disclaimer or whatever

This is kinda funny because it’s not something I’ve ever thought about before. I guess I ship them because I’m gay and have unresolved trauma. 

Lol, jk (I mean, those things are true). I think I just really like the idea of enemies to lovers? Idk. I just think the idea of Van Helsing having to kill Dracula whilst also being in love or whatever with him is just,,,,such an interesting idea. Plus the idea of Dracula being soft and in love out of nowhere when he hasn’t been for centuries and all of a sudden having to deal with all these emotions is also very interesting. 

Idk, I think part of the appeal of shipping Dracula with anyone is, like, exploring these themes of someone who has been “living” for themselves for centuries, and has been completely selfish and self sustaining now having to grapple with the idea that they’re in love with someone (whatever that means for them), and having to deal with all the emotions of it. It’s an interesting character arc. 

Shipping Dracula with Van Helsing, in my opinion, makes sense and is interesting because Van Helsing is probably the only person in the book who can keep up with him intellectually (Mina is smart enough but I wouldn’t say she’s learned enough, though she could be), and also the only person who is, like, disciplined enough to actually be able to deal with him, and also the only person that Dracula really respects. 

 I imagine Dracula would be fairly emotionally turbulent, and he needs someone who is levelheaded and patient enough to deal with that in a healthy way, and also who likes him enough and gets enough out of the relationship to want to help him, and I think that person is Van Helsing.* (Part of the reason why I don’t like DracMina is because she isn’t experienced enough to do that, imo, but that’s a different post altogether). And then them being enemies just gives some interesting dynamics to work with. 

Ok, well that was long-winded. Now onto the “Van Helsing is a self-insert for Bram Stoker” thing: 

So, admittedly, this is just, like, a theory and not something that Stoker ever admitted to, but it does make some sense for a few reasons: 

~ Abraham was Stoker’s full first name (also his fathers first name). 

~ Van Helsing was described to look a bit like Stoker (red hair, blue eyes, etc.)

~ He’s basically an overbeefed (?) NPC, and is a lot like a Mary Sue (I think the masculine is Gary Sue). Which, like, Mary Sue’s aren’t really real, but usually an overpowered character is an indication of an authorial self-insert. That being said, Van Helsing *does* have issues, but they’re issues that would not have been considered issues in the Victorian Era (re: he’s kinda mysoginistic, though admittedly not as much as some other characters).

One theory that is in this same vein is also that Dracula is an insert/was based on Stoker’s boss, Henry Irving. Also, some people think Stoker was in love with Irving (which is also another post, lol).  Basically: 

~ Irving was set to play Dracula in a stage adaptation (which he declined because he hated the book). 

~ Dracula is described to look a bit like Irving (bushy curly hair, bushy eyebrows, big nose, strong face, etc.) 

~ Dracula and Irving have some similar character traits, especially in the way Dracula is described as being spellbinding (which he also described Irving as), etc. 

Personally, I don’t think these things were intentional. Like, I don’t think Stoker thought “I’m going to make *myself* the hero :)”, or “I’m going to make *my boss* the villain :)”. I think he just wrote the characters he wanted to see and that interested him and there just happened to be a lot of similarities, but I do think the similarities are important to keep in mind when analyzing the book. 

Anyways, this was very long and I’m so sorry (but honestly, every answer I give to an ask ends up being really long, lol. What do y’all expect from me?). I hope this answered your questions! And thanks for giving my blog a look :) 

*Disclaimer: I don’t ship them in a toxic relationship type of way. Someone can be very emotional (due to trauma, mental illness, or no reason at all) and still be a wonderful, loving partner. I chose this song bc it’s abbout being sad, but the tone is upbeat and happy. Something I’ve noticed abt Tim is that he is (usually) functionally depressed. Like, I read an article about high functioning depression, and it said that a lot of people who have it have a hole in their life – that they can have a job (and Tim does, being either CEO or Red Robin or both), a partner (who I like to think of as Kon), and be part of a family, maintaining this happy/upeat facade, but if you ask them what they do for fun…they usually can’t answer that. And I don’t think Tim can. When he was younger, he could, but what now?

I chose this bc it reminded me of Tim and Dick. I’m of the opinion that Tim getting fired from Robin was the right choice and that Dick wasn’t being cruel or anything like that at all, but I also think that Tim probably saw it that way which is valid. So it’s like, to him, Dick was his big brother who was basically always there for him, and then suddenly… he’s not. And everything else going on in his life starts to suck dramatically, and not having his big brother makes it worse, and he feels betrayed. Meanwhile Dick really is on his side, life is just also terrible for him too so they can’t be as close as they were when Tim was Robin. It can also be about Bruce or Kon tbh – just, wanting one of them to be there and they’re not.

Obviously that can be tied back to his childhood and how he had to take care of himself, and so when there are people who actually do wanna help him he doesn’t see it?? And he’s down on himself so he’s probably thinking “they don’t want to help me, and I can’t blame them”

Basically my thoughts here are: 1) everyone looks to the Robins and sees how much they do and it’s just A Lot, 2) Tim knows Jason died and so he probably thinks that’s in his future too even if Dick survived, and 3) Tim is doing a lot and feeling a lot and trying to protect himself and his feelings, which is hard work especially for someone so young

I can also see it as him thinking on who he was as a kid – a stalker basically lmao, but ultimately harmless – versus who he is now – a skilled vigilante who’s definitely not harmless. Stark difference there. Also he’s forgiving himself, which is something I think is important for somebody with a low self view

I hate Drake but kjdsfkjdsfhajh this goes back to a few things. His celebrity and how he’s seen/treated differently by others because of it, his low self view and the paranoia that people aren’t really there for him no matter what the truth might be, how he sees things others wouldn’t, his relationships with people like Damian and Bruce. I think he’s more forgiving than this song would imply, so maybe this is also for that AU Tim I mentioned above???

I’m mostly joking when I say this but this is how he feels about Ra’s al Ghul. It doesn’t fit exactly, bc Tim and Ra’s were NOT together ever at any point, but this song is about being annoyed by someone you have a history with and wishing you’d never known them. I really think this is Tim talking to his parents. Like, when he’s a kid, or when he’s older and looking back, he’s thinking “I did everything I could, it wasn’t enough, and I know it’s not fair but I can’t do anything about it.” I think this song is supposed to be romantic but I’ve never heard it that way skdjfkjsdhakjh I just always think about Tim, home alone and thinking about his parents.
