Valicer OT3 Week, Day Five: Nontraditional Soulmates
In the home stretch of @ot3-week's OT3 Week, and we've come to a good one today -- "Nontraditional soulmates!" Which, of course, is a perfect opportunity for me to bust out the Soulmates AU I came up with for the trio! :D I did two fics for this for last year's Polyship Week, and this one is sort of the sequel to the first, "Day Four: Soulmates." (The second being "Day Six: Drabble(s)," and coming even later in the timeline.) That story dealt with Victor running into Alice in the Whitechapel marketplace and accidentally activating their soulbond, only for a slightly-panicked Alice to run, leaving Victor to report the discovery to his other soulmate Smiler alone -- here, we have Alice, having mostly gotten over her initial "SHIT IT'S MY SOULMATE I'M NOT READY" reaction, finding her way to Victor via the bond so they can actually talk -- only to hesitate right outside his door...
--
All right. Here we are. No turning back now...no matter how much I kind of want to turn back.
Alice rocked anxiously on her heels, staring at the door in front of her. It was a pretty plain, ordinary door, all things considered. Little more than a flat piece of wood with a handle attached. Oh sure, there was a bit of perfunctory decoration in the form of a couple of shallow squares roughly dug out of the front, and the usual assortment of nicks and dings acquired from daily living, but other than that – it was an uncomplicated door for an uncomplicated building. There was nothing special or interesting about it at all, really.
Beyond the fact that one Victor Van Dort, her soulmate, was behind it.
Alice swallowed, worrying her lip with her teeth. It is so bizarre to just – know he’s there, she thought. With the sort of rock-solid certainty I don’t have about anything else in my life right now. But then – he must know I’m here, right? Why doesn’t he just – open the door? Spare me the trouble of knocking? But then again, he didn’t try to chase me when I ran from him in the market...perhaps he assumes that I still want to make the first move. And since we can only share emotions, not actual thoughts, I can’t really correct him. She sighed. Bloody hell – whoever or whatever force tied our lives together, it could have given us proper telepathy instead of just its poor cousin.
“It could have,” Cheshire agreed, sitting by her feet. “But it didn’t. Time to turn thought into action and spur him forward in the process.” He gave her a trademark grin, teeth glittering in the dim light of the hallway. “Or purrhaps spur forward someone else.”
Don’t you lot even think of intruding, Alice scolded, giving him her best glare. I mean, yes, he probably knows about you and Wonderland already, and how mucked-up my mind is, but – my stomach’s already in knots about this. She ran her thumb over her wrist, tracing the faint line that only she – and Victor – knew about. I don’t need the stress of having to wrangle you or Caterpillar or Hatter or God forbid the Queen of Hearts into the bargain.
“Have it your way,” Cheshire said, fading to eyes and smile. “Though I think you’ll soon find it’s not only us who can intrude.”
And with that, he was gone – predictably before she could ask him what the hell he meant. She looked up and down the hallway, but there was no one else there – and none of the doors to the other flats in this place looked ready to open anytime soon. “Maddening,” she muttered, shaking her head. “As if I needed any help in that regard...”
But he’d had a point before he’d vanished – nothing was going to happen if she didn’t make it happen. Alice ran her fingers through her hair to neaten it a bit, brushed off her skirts, then plucked up her courage and rapped smartly on the door. A moment later, it opened –
Revealing, of all people, Nanny’s new bartender at the Mangled Mermaid.
Alice stared. The bartender – one Smiler Alton, if she recalled correctly – stared back. Then, just before it could get awkward, they snorted. “Oh – that Alice,” they said, apropos of nothing. “I didn’t think I lived in that coincidental a universe.”
“...beg pardon?” Alice said, for lack of anything better.
“What she said.”
Victor appeared in the doorway behind Smiler, looking as confused as she felt. “Uh – hello,” he greeted her, before turning his attention to his – roommate? “‘That Alice?’”
“From the Mermaid,” Smiler explained, glancing up at him. “She’s Nan’s old charge – dropped by a couple of times to talk to her. Didn’t expect to see you under these circumstances,” they added in her direction.
“When it comes down to it, neither did I,” Alice said, tilting her head. “You and Victor live together?”
“Ah – yes,” Victor said, twisting his tie. Alice found herself resisting the urge to fiddle with her own blouse’s collar as the nerves poured off him and into her. “I – I d-don’t know how much the b-bond told you, but...well...”
“Hi,” Smiler cut in, sporting their namesake expression. “I’m your other soulmate.”
...Not even “beg pardon” seemed sufficient for that. “What?” Alice blurted. “You – but – what?”
“Yes, ah, sometimes – sometimes you can get two,” Victor said, shooting Smiler a look before favoring her with an awkward smile. “It’s, um, k-kind of a long story...how about you come in?”
“There’s tea and biscuits in it for you,” Smiler promised, stepping out of the way.
No, I want you to explain to me what the hell you mean by “sometimes you can get two” right now – but before Alice could put words to tongue, she caught sight of Smiler’s arm, resting against the door frame. Specifically, their wrist, leaned up against the wood above their head. Even more specifically, the thin scar running along said wrist –
That looked very, very much like the kind one might get if they’d taken a blunt spoon to their flesh in a desperate attempt to end their life. Alice swallowed and nodded. “I – I think I could use some tea right now, thank you.”

Valicer OT3 Week Masterpost
Did it for Polyship Week, so should do it for OT3 Week as well! This is just a straight-up list of the fics by day, with the relevant AU information and anything else you might need to know next to it in parentheses; "established" AUs (that is, AUs I already had tags for, instead of being a one-shot AU for the specific prompt) have their AU tag linked as well:
Day One: Meet Cute (Modern!AU)
Day Two: The Cool Kid, The Jock, And The Nerd (High School!AU)
Day Three: Childhood Friends (Vaguely Victorian!AU, Kidfic)
Day Four: The Knight, The Princess, And The Dragon Are Actually All Together (Medieval Fantasy!AU, hypnokinky and slightly NSFW at the end -- the post itself has the "Mature" community tag)
Day Five: Nontraditional Soulmates (Soulmates!AU)
Day Six: No One Wants To Leave The Cuddle Pile (Modern!AU, slightly hypnokinky near the end)
Day Seven: Free Day (Valicer In The Dark!AU)
Hope you enjoyed this week of Valicer prompts! As always, I am continuing to work on Valicer fic in the background -- making some good progress on the first official "Valicer In The Dark" fic, "Start At The Beginning...Sort Of." Really hoping I can release that for general consumption soon!

Valicer Polyship Week, Day Six: Drabble(s) (Soulmate AU)
Day Six of Valicer Polyship Week, courtesy of @polyshipweek, and we’re up to the day where I had the most trouble picking a prompt. Most of the others had something that immediately stood out to me, but Day Six’s prompts were “Identity Porn” (a term I was unfamiliar with -- it was later clarified as “stories about dealing with multiple identities,” i.e., Superman dealing with being both Superman and Clark Kent, and I don’t really have anything like that for the Valicer trio), “Mythology AU” (while I have a fairy version of Smiler, I tend to go for generic fantasy AUs over specific mythologies), “Drabble(s)” (you know, keeping it short -- which, if you’re familiar with my fics, you know is not something I’m always good at), and the visual prompt of “Big Comfy Couch” (a “draw the squad” picture of a bunch of people on a couch, which could have worked but I felt something like that was more suited to a bigger polycule, and I was trying to focus on just Valicer for this week). As you can see, I ended up going with “Drabble(s),” as the post expanding on the prompts indicated that multiples of 100 were acceptable so long as you kept it short! And once I had THAT sorted, I decided that the best way to handle it was to use my Soulmate AU and write about the fact that, when the soulmate bond(s) first form, you have a symbolic dream relating to your new soulmate(s). My original idea was to do a separate drabble for each dream, but that didn’t work out great, so I instead did a triple-drabble (300 words) of them describing the dreams to each other. Which ended up being one of the easiest fics to write in the end -- perhaps I should try keeping it to 300 words more often. XD Enjoy!
---
“So – what was yours?”
“Pardon?”
“Your dream,” Smiler pressed. “What was it?”
“Oh.” Alice cast her mind back to the fateful night when the universe had inextricably tied her soul to Victor’s and Smiler’s. “I was sailing in a paper boat across an ink sea, under a purple sky filled with spiraling yellow clouds. At the time, I thought I’d just stumbled across some forgotten bit of Wonderland – a hypothesis disproved when I truly arrived back there and no one knew what I was talking about.” She looked between her soulmates. “Yours?”
“I was sitting in the roots of a glowing tree, with spiral branches and multicolored leaves,” Victor told her with a smile. “I felt so – so safe there, so warm and cherished, I was almost sad to wake up. But I was also thrilled, because – because it felt like my soulmate would really love me, if that was my dream.”
“I was chasing blue butterflies across a path of dominoes in the sky,” Smiler reported. “To the tune of the most beautiful piano music I’d ever heard. I was pretty high up, but I wasn’t scared of falling – in fact, I felt more free than I had in a long time. It gave me hope that I had a future better than Kelman’s little ‘sanctuary.’”
Alice nodded slowly. “For me, it felt like I’d finally come home when I ended up in that boat,” she said, voice soft. “Like I’d regained something I’d thought lost forever. A single moment of clarity and peace inside the hellhole that was Rutledge.” She reached for their hands. “I’m so glad you two were the ones to give it to me.”
Victor and Smiler beamed back, fingers both delicate and callused twining with hers. “We’re happy it was you for us too.”

Valicer Polyship Week, Day Four: Soulmates (Soulmate AU)
Day Four of Valicer Polyship Week, courtesy of @polyshipweek, and we’re up to the “Soulmates” prompt -- which, of course, inspired me to bust out my Soulmate AU idea! The idea behind this world is that it’s one where you can have a) platonic as well as romantic soulmates and b) multiple soulmates, and Victor, Alice, and Smiler are all each other’s soulmates. Victor and Smiler met first, fell in love, discovered they had a THIRD soulmate when they realized neither of them tried to slit their wrists before they met (extreme emotions and injuries can be transferred between soulmates even before meeting -- meaning Alice’s attempt to gouge herself with the spoon in Rutledge got them too), and ended up running away to London together when Victor’s parents tried to force him into an arranged marriage he didn’t want and Smiler’s father tried to send them away to rural Lithuania to keep them away from Victor. We pick up here with Victor at the Whitechapel Market, about to meet his other soulmate in a very Victorish way. . .
---
All right – just a few things to pick up, and then I can finally go home and tell Smiler all about how boring my day was. Let’s see. . .carrots. . .potatoes. . .do I want some apples? Do I want these apples specifically. . .hmm. Maybe I’ll wait and come back on a, um, fresher day. . .but oh, I should definitely get some – “Oh!”
Victor jolted as he turned toward the butcher, only to collide with someone coming the other way. He stumbled backward a handful of steps as his unfortunate victim – a young, dark-haired lady in black-and-white, almost but not quite as colorless as all the people he’d left behind in Burtonsville – hit the cobbles. “I-I-I am so s-sorry,” Victor babbled, reaching automatically for his tie before recalling his manners and instead using his free hand to offer a lift up to the woman. “I w-wasn’t looking where I-I was going, and – I’m – I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine,” the woman said, shaking her head slightly. “I wasn’t really looking where I was going either, if I’m honest.” She reached back for him, accepting the hand up. “I’m glad you at least have the manners to apologize–”
Said Alice.
Victor gasped softly as, just for a moment, the world was suffused in a golden glow. Oh my God – it’s her! It’s her, she’s the one, she’s – she’s Alice Pleasance Liddell, born May 4th, 1855 – the same age as Smiler and me! That makes things easier. . .and she loves cats and rabbits, and her favorite food is strawberry cake, though she’ll eat any cake that’s presented to her – ha, same – but she doesn’t actually like candy all that much, and she likes to draw but she’s currently not very good – currently? – and she’s got a whole fictional realm called Wonderland that she made up when she was seven, and –
And she lost her entire family to a house fire about ten years ago, and she spent the latter half of her childhood in Rutledge Asylum. . .which would explain –
And that was when Alice, who’d been gawking at him with the prettiest green eyes he’d seen since meeting Smiler, yanked her hand out of his and bolted down the street.
“Wha – wait!” Victor took a step after her, arm raised, but she ignored him, instead darting down a side alley. He watched her disappear from sight, emotions all aswirl. Alice Liddell – the only survivor of the Liddell fire! That’s who we’re – who would have guessed that I would have just literally run into her in this part of London! Shouldn’t she be in Oxford? Then again, she can’t have been expecting to meet me here. . .what did she get from me, I wonder? What made her react like that? Did – did she not like what she saw? No, that can’t be it, she hasn’t rejected the bond, she’s just. . .she’s scared, that’s what it is, she’s scared to actually face me, to know I’m real. . .
A wave of puzzled concern washed over him then, as if from an invisible bucket – though, frankly, Victor was surprised it had taken Smiler this long to notice the chaos within him. He sent back a complicated mix of feelings that he hoped indicated “I’ll be home in a moment,” threw some money at the potato lady, then shot down the street, back to the two-up he shared with his beloved. Smiler met him at the door, steering him inside with a hand on his shoulder. “What happened?” they asked, no preamble, worry clear in their gaze.
“I found her,” Victor replied, dropping the bag of groceries on their little kitchen table.
“Her?”
“You know – her.” Victor pulled back his right sleeve, revealing the faint scar across his wrist. The scar mirrored on Smiler’s left – and which neither of them had cut into their skin. “Our third. Our – our other soulmate.”

AU Thursday: Valicer Soulmates AU
Yes, I’m coming at you with another Valicer AU that I came up with a little while back -- mostly because this particular AU will feature in a couple of prompts for my upcoming Valicer take on Polyship Week, so I gotta get it established before then! This one is, as you can see by the title above, a soulmates AU! How does that work for a poly relationship? Like so:
-->This is a Victorian-era AU, with Victor and Alice in roughly their standard canon forms and Smiler in their “child of Dr. Kelman” form. The AU starts before Corpse Bride can kick off (and in fact prevents it from doing so, at least in its regular form) and between American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns -- think “standard Forgotten Vows-style AU” time range. :p
-->In this world, soulmates are a thing -- but they’re not necessarily romantic! There have been many recorded cases of a soulmate being a person’s platonic best friend instead of their one-and-only love interest. Basically soulmates are supposed to be someone you just know is going to be important to you in a big way. (Most people DO interpret the bond romantically, admittedly, but still -- other options exist!)
-->What hasn’t been recorded so much is that multiple soulmates are a thing too -- it’s less common than the standard “this is your One Very Important Person,” but it does happen! Again, the combinations can be romantic, platonic, or somewhere in-between, depending on how the people involved connect.
-->The soulmate bond forms on the evening of a person’s 16th birthday; while they form, the person has a symbolic dream featuring stuff meant to represent the other person/people involved.
-->The soulbond exists in four forms:
A. Nascent -- the bond has formed, but the soulmates have not yet met and touched skin-to-skin. The soulmates are all vaguely aware the other exists, but can’t consciously transmit anything over the bond. However, extreme emotions and even injuries can be transmitted unwittingly (though it is impossible to kill a soulmate this way -- the soulmate(s) always recover, with just a faint scar in the appropriate place. If the person who is hurt actually dies from their injuries, the soulmate bond just fades away, leaving the other person unharmed (if very unhappy)).
B. Full -- the soulmates have met and touched skin-to-skin. The bond flares to full life at the moment of contact, letting everyone involved know that they’ve met their soulmate(s) and giving them a rush of whatever information the universe deems pertinent (pretty much always name, age, gender/sexuality, and a few key bits of their history). Once that’s over, the soulmates can now willingly share their emotions with each other (with much more control about what gets transmitted too -- generally injuries stop being shared except in very extreme situations), and can always tell where any other soulmate is in relation to themselves.
C. Dimmed -- either the soulmates, after meeting and activating the bond, end up rejecting each other (in any way short of outright trying to kill each other), or one of the soulmates dies before the other. In the first case, the soulbond reverts to a muted vague knowledge of the others’ existence and no longer transmits emotions at all, allowing the soulmates to get on with their lives. In the second, the surviving soulmate(s) can still sort of “feel” their dead soulmate’s presence, and can recall anything about them perfectly.
D. Snapped -- the soulmates, upon meeting, try to outright murder each other, or one goes to someone who knows the secret ritual to snap a soulbond to have it severed. This violent rejection causes a painful and nasty “soul wound” on all sides that takes a while to heal, leaving all affected feeling oddly empty and lost inside for at least a few days. (In the case of multiple soulmates, this only affects the bond with the person who did the snapping -- the bond with their other soulmates is fine.) It’s considered one of the worst things you can do to a person, and the ritual to snap soulbonds is VERY illegal.
-->Victor, Alice, and Smiler are all soulmates, as to be expected! Victor’s dream is of a glowing tree with spiral-shaped branches and multicolored leaves set in a bright and cheery forest; Alice’s is of sailing an ink sea in a paper boat under a purple sky with yellow spiral clouds; and Smiler’s is of chasing butterflies through the sky on a domino path while accompanied by piano music.
-->Unfortunately, AMA went off as per usual in this world, meaning that Alice is in Rutledge when her dream happens, and doesn’t really grasp the significance (she thinks she’s found some sort of forgotten corner of Wonderland at first, and soon forgets it as she continues her catatonic quest to avoid her feelings about the fire and the death of her family). Worse yet, when she goes after her own wrists with the spoon in Rutledge (after the incident where the Monroe twins spooned porridge all over Mr. Bunny to “feed” him because they were sick of forcing her mouth open), she accidentally hurts Victor and Smiler (Victor at tea with his parents and some guests; Smiler arguing with Dr. Kelman) -- and only realizes what she’s done when she “hears” their screams of pain (though she doesn’t clock at the time she’s getting it from TWO people). She immediately retreats even deeper into catatonia to avoid dealing with THAT guilt, and Victor and Smiler are both left with a faint scar on their wrist -- Victor on the right, Smiler on the left.
-->Fast forward a couple of years, and Dr. Kelman is invited to one of Nell’s shindigs and brings Smiler to stay in Burtonsville for a bit to attend. Smiler and Victor meet at the party and discover they’re soulmates when they shake hands. Both are thrilled to meet each other at first. . .and then Victor reluctantly brings up the whole “why did you try to kill yourself” thing, and they both realize neither of them tried to cut their wrists. Meaning. . . “wait, there’s someone else?!”
-->Victor and Smiler naturally spend a lot of time together while Kelman and Smiler are in town, becoming quick friends, and then lovers, before the two head back home. Smiler also does some research and discovers that yes, multiple soulmates are a thing. The two agree through letters that they need to find their mysterious third --
-->And then William and Nell announce that Victor’s betrothed to Victoria Everglot. Victor, not particularly wanting to marry a stranger, tells them about his relationship with Smiler and how they’re soulmates, but is informed that he can’t be romantically in love with “another boy” and that he’s marrying Victoria no matter what. Victor sends the news to Smiler, who tries to petition Kelman -- only to be told that no, they can’t be with Victor, and Kelman is going to ship them off to rural Lithuania to stop them. Unfortunately, he leaves the details up to his assistant, Miles Cedars, and Smiler is easily able to get Miles to help them instead just run away with Victor, who flees into the night shortly before the wedding with just the barest essentials.
-->(Oh, but what of Victoria? I have a scene in mind of them meeting by the wall surrounding the town on his way out, because SHE’S debating running away to find her own soulmate instead of being forced into marrying a stranger. They clasp hands just to check that they aren’t soulmates, then Victor assists Victoria somehow -- I haven’t figured out how yet, mostly because I haven’t decided if Emily is still alive in this AU (having rejected Barkis in the end because he DIDN’T activate her soulmate bond; she’s Victor’s old piano teacher and only too willing to help Victoria find true love) or still dead (in which case, Victoria ends up in one of those “CB but Victoria wakes up Emily” AUs and helps her get revenge on Barkis -- discovering Emily is her soulmate, or at least one of them, possible!). Either way, though, Victoria is NOT left to have to marry anyone like Barkis Bittern because Victor refused to leave the enby he loved!)
-->Victor and Smiler end up in London, either in Whitechapel itself or somewhere nearby, getting a couple of rooms under the names “Smiler Alton” (or “Simon Alton” if the person insists on a “real” name) and “Victor Brown.” Smiler ends up becoming a barperson at the Mangled Mermaid (impressing Nanny with their drink-pouring skills), while Victor ends up a clerk to Radcliffe (a job that actually involves him dusting Radcliffe’s antiques and then doing whatever he wants because Radcliffe hates clients). Smiler becomes passingly familiar with Alice from her visiting a couple of times to see Nanny. . .
-->But Victor first meets her at the Whitechapel Market when he literally bumps into her grocery shopping, and accidentally activates their bond while helping her up. A panicked Alice, not ready to face her soulmate, flees down an alley. . .but after taking a bit of time to get her emotions under control, follows the bond back to Victor and Smiler’s place, where she discovers that apparently she has TWO soulmates, wtf. (She also apologizes for the spoon incident, admitting that she’s felt guilty about that for quite a while.) The three end up getting close, with Alice eventually activating her bond with Smiler and realizing that she too loves Victor romantically (fortunately Smiler proves more than willing to share, and Victor to return her feelings). . .
-->And then the Madness Returns, because Alice does still need to realize Bumby is her sister’s killer. Fortunately, due to the soulbonds, Victor and Smiler are a) aware of what’s happening and b) can track her down with ease, and they’re able to stop her wandering all over London in a hallucinatory daze, instead keeping her with them in their flat. (That being said, there’s a non-zero chance that Victor will actually catch up with Alice right after her dip in the Thames. . .and then they’ll both have to rescue Smiler from the Mermaid when it goes up in flames. This will allow me to improve on Victor punching Splatter by having Alice kick the asshole in the balls immediately afterward. XD)
-->Victor and Smiler end up accompanying Alice to the final confrontation with Bumby, hanging back just out of sight as backup should she need it. Bumby, as a last act of assholery, attempts to snap Alice’s soulmate bonds with them as he knows the ritual (in fact, he used it on himself to snap his bond when he realized it wasn’t Lizzie, not wanting it) -- however, because Victor, Alice, and Smiler all very much want their bonds, it doesn’t work, and he ends up in front of the train as per usual.
-->Alice, Victor, and Smiler end up taking care of Houndsditch for a while until a replacement can be found. . .but the media circus over Bumby’s death, and the subsequent reveal of what he was doing at Houndsditch alerts the Van Dorts and Kelman as to where their missing children are. So as soon as they’re certain the children are in GOOD hands, the trio hop the first boat to another country (probably America) to start over.
Whew! And now you have context for the two short fics coming up next week. XD Enjoy!

Valicer Polyship Week, Day One: Road Trip (Modern AU)
Hi folks! Welcome to Valicer Polyship Week! Where every day this week you will get a short Valicer fic based on one of the prompts from the official Polyship Week list, courtesy of @polyshipweek! Today is Day One, and our prompt is “Road Trip” in the Modern AU universe (where Victor, Alice, and Smiler are all human and meet in college in the modern day, or close enough to). This prompt actually ended up being more inspiring than I first expected -- mostly because, after writing it and looking at some of my other prompts for the week, I realized that, completely by coincidence, I’d made all the odd-numbered days (One, Three, Five, and Seven) Modern AU -- and that all of them felt like they were part of the same story. So I decided they were! :D So yeah, this is now the first in a series of stories set during a road trip around England that Victor, Alice, and Smiler take a couple of years into their relationship. (The other prompts are split between the Soulmate AU and the Valicer In The Dark AU I expanded up on last week -- I’ll go into more detail on those when we get there!)
As for this particular story, my specific inspiration was the mention of “car snacks” in the post expanding on all of the possible prompts for Day One and Two, and remembering some road trips I took with my family down to Florida to visit Universal Studios as a kid. Specifically, how much I enjoyed getting Combos (the cheesy pretzel snack) while on those road trips. I figured Alice might like them, and so this fic was born. (And then had to be quickly updated to indicate that these are imports when I confirmed that Combos are made by an American company. :p Look, I had a specific vision in mind, so give me that this random petrol station has the snacks, okay?)
---
“Hey, Alice – catch!”
Alice turned, just in time to intercept the bag tossed her way. “These are – ‘Combos?’” she said, reading the name printed across the front.
“Yeah – they’re little pretzel tubes filled with cheese,” Smiler informed her, holding up another, identical bag. “American brand, so whoever works here must be a big fan to import ‘em. I know you like pretzels, so. . .”
“Ah – well, I’ll certainly give them a try,” Alice said, turning the bag over in her hands to read the back. “Marvelously unhealthy for you, I see. . .oh, and there’s other flavors to boot. Pizzeria, Buffalo Blue Cheese – Sweet and Salty Caramel Crème??”
“Really?” Smiler checked the back of their own bag. “Huh! Well, hey, chocolate-covered pretzels are pretty good, so don’t knock ‘em til you eat ‘em.”
“I haven’t tried those either, so I can’t give an informed opinion,” Alice replied. “Maybe Victor might be up for them, though.”
“Might be up for what?” Victor asked, appearing at the end of the aisle holding what Alice suspected was at least one of every candy bar this petrol station offered.
“Up for – uh, actually, I don’t know if you’d have room for caramel crème pretzels,” Smiler corrected themselves, noting his load. “So where’s the chocolate for the rest of us?”
“Ha ha – I intend to share,” Victor said, putting his nose in the air. “And this is meant to last us a few days, you know.”
“Oh, you believe that, do you?” Alice said teasingly. “I know what you and Smiler are like when it comes to sugar – that pile isn’t going to last the hour.”
“I dunno, I think we could stretch it out to two if we really controlled ourselves,” Smiler replied, smirking. They checked their watch. “Anyway, we gotta wrap up and get going if we wanna reach Alton before sunset.”
“Not before we get drinks,” Victor informed them, grinning. “They’ve got an off-brand Slushy machine on the counter, and they offer apple, banana, and strawberry flavors!”
“What – you must be kidding,” Alice said.
“No, I’m serious! I mean, obviously I don’t know if any of them actually taste like the fruit, but. . .”
“Only one way to find out!” Smiler declared, grabbing a bag of what Alice suspected were Sweet and Salty Caramel Crème Combos. “Lead the way, mutual boyfriend!”

AU Thursday: I'd Do This, But How? -- Soulmates
Okay, I know I'm probably regarded by anyone who reads this tumblr as the AU Queen. My ability to make a Valice AU out of darn near anything I've watched or read (or even just heard of) is getting a bit ridiculous. But there are a few AU concepts that actually give me trouble when it comes to applying them to my favorite couple. So I figured I'd show my fallibility and talk about those ideas that tend to run into a wall whenever I start thinking seriously about them. First up -- the classic Soulmates AU!
Why I'd Want To Do It: Hey, who doesn't like the idea of their OTP being destined to be together? And I've seen some cool ideas regarding how you know someone is your soulmate, or how you meet them. I particularly rather like the "whatever your soulmate writes on their skin appears on yours too" idea -- it seems a cute way to have conversations.
What's the Problem?: Well, if you know anything about me, you know I'm also a fan of poly relationships, particularly my OT4 of Victor/Alice/Victoria/Emily. Soulmate AUs are typically not designed for multiple partners. And even without that angle, there's the issue of it cheapening Victor's relationship with Victoria and Emily. Yeah, I know, he knew them both for about a day, but even with that, I've always been on the opinion there were some genuine feelings there. Nothing too major, but -- budding love. I don't like the idea that they were just "mistakes" on his way to Alice. Not to mention, how could Emily want to run away with Barkis if she had proof that he wasn't her soulmate? (Because I refuse to entertain the idea that he was. Just no.) And what about my love for LizJangles? BJ's dead long before Lizzie is ready for romance! And having your soulmate be someone who died. . .while the Land of the Dead still allows for them to meet, it's awkward as hell.
Why I Keep Coming Back To It: I like the idea of little Alice and little Victor "texting" each other via their arms, and doodling little pictures to each other. And I have a strong (and angsty) scene where, when Alice tries to cut open her wrists in the asylum with the spoon, Victor too suffers the wounds (I was thinking he's at some sort of luncheon at the time, and is in the middle of asking for someone to pass the salt when he suddenly screams in pain and his wrists start bleeding). She stops because he begs her to in his own blood. (I'm -- way too good at Valice angst, aren't I?)
How I Could Do It: Well, if I just want the "writing on your arm makes the words appear on someone else's" aspect, I've got a magic system -- I could make that a spell my mains could use in other universes, especially the Forgotten Vows Verse. (Hell, they've already got a way to send regular paper messages to people both living and dead (although they don't know about it yet in the fics). Maybe this could be a new spell they themselves discover?) It's still fun, and could allow for multiple partners.
As for the soulmate business -- well, does anyone remember this prompt? That prompted the brief existence of the Colorful Soulmates AU? I only ever really talked about it as "this would make great fanart/these songs remind me of the idea," but you know, I could probably get a proper story out of it. I still like the idea of Victor seeing red for the first time in Victoria's red dress, and blue in Emily's blue skin and hair, and green in Alice's green eyes. Maybe as a series of shorts? Hmmm...

One last link back to the beginning now that the story's complete! I had a lot of fun with this story -- it’s been something to watch it evolve from "hey this is a cool prompt" to "okay now how do I do this as a story again?" to "holy crap people actually like this." XD And it’s been a needed bit of upbeat writing (barring a couple of chapters) during the darker moments of “Fixing You.” It’s been a delight, doing some actual Vemlicia writing, instead of just throwing some ideas out there onto my tumblr. I don't want to promise any sequels, but I wouldn't be opposed to coming back to the verse at some point in the future. After I’ve finished “Fixing You” and gotten a decent start on “Secundus 2: Weird Weird West,” though. :p
