Ok, last 24 hours on the campaign, so I thought I'd share:
= 10 reasons why I'm excited about Derelict Delvers =
Let's go 👇
01. Danger Clocks!
This little mechanic that replaces Hit Points went somewhat viral when I shared it on Twitter and here (almost 100k people saw it 🤯)
So there's probably something to it, I guess 😅
Tumblr media
02. Meta-roles!
The game is GMless, so GM responsibilities are shared among players through meta-roles.
A player is responsible for rulings, another one for the monsters, another for the map, another for the emergent lore…
Everyone participates!
Tumblr media
03. Random Tables!
20+ random tables to create monsters, powers, hazards, and even room layouts!
Tumblr media
04. Unique Characters!
Just come up with the most wild concept for your character and you're good!
Here are some examples:
Tumblr media
05. Custom Powers!
Create weapons, gadgets, stunts, moves and talents the way you want them.
When you use a power, you can customize its effect on the spot to suit your intention!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
06. Dynamic Combat!
There's always more than one thing going on during a scene.
You deal with unpredictable hazards and bizarre monsters at the same time! Here's an example of play:
Player 01 went up the walkway and blasted a flamethrower against a Crystal Scorpion. Player 02 botched their roll on the control panel and activated a magnetic field that sucked them into spinning blades. This is getting real fun, y'all
Tumblr media
07. Cool Character Sheet!
I mean, I think it's pretty cool
Tumblr media
08. Dare Checks!
You can intentionally reduce your chance of success to show off and perform cool moves!
In exchange, you get rewards!
Tumblr media
09. Wounds that really hurt!
When you are wounded, you get infected with alien DNA. That infection will… change you. In ways that you didn't expect.
Be prepared to confront some harsh realities about your actions.
(The final table has 18 entries….)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. The game is done!
The game is fully funded, written and laid out!
It's only pending final revision and bookmarks.
You should expect to get the final PDF very, very soon!
Tumblr media
There's much more that I am excited about this game, but if you made it this far, considering backing it today and sharing it with your friends.
That's the last chance to get it at such a low price!
Let's make this final 24-hour stretch a great one!
Thank you! 😊

ChatGPT goes pro, layoffs at Alphabet, and Dungeons & Dragons flirts with restrictive new licensing
by Kyle Wiggers@kyle_l_wiggers  5:15 AM GMT+8•January 15, 2023
Welcome, welcome, folks, to Week in Review, TechCrunch’s regular column that recaps the last week in news. If you’d like it in your inbox every Saturday, sign up here. Hope you’re sitting comfortably with a warm beverage on this wintery Saturday afternoon. Expecting Greg’s byline? Not to worry — he’s still enjoying parental leave, as I mentioned in the January 7 edition. All’s well.
Before we get into it, I’d be remiss if I didn’t note, once again, that TC Early Stage in Boston is on the horizon. With tickets starting at $99, it’ll be a worthwhile stop along the Eastern conference circuit, packed with expert-led workshops, case studies and deep dives with technical founders. Some members of the TechCrunch editorial staff will be in attendance — don’t be a stranger if you spot us on the show floor.
most read
ChatGPT goes pro: OpenAI this week signaled it’ll soon begin charging for ChatGPT, its viral AI-powered chatbot that can write essays, emails, poems and even computer code. A “pro” version of the tool called ChatGPT Professional will throw in no unavailability windows, no throttling and an unlimited number of messages with ChatGPT — “at least 2x the regular daily limit.” Pricing remains up in the air.
Microsoft 365 goes Basic: Microsoft will introduce a lower-cost tier of Microsoft 365, its family of productivity software and cloud-based document editing services, starting on January 30, the company announced Wednesday. Called Microsoft 365 Basic and priced at $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year, the plan will initially include 100 GB of storage, Outlook email and access to support experts for help with Microsoft 365 and Windows 11.
Layoffs hit a news aggregator: SmartNews, the Tokyo-based news aggregation website and app, let go of 40% of its U.S. and China workforce, or around 120 people, my colleagues Sarah and Kirsten report. The company was impacted by the same macroeconomic factors that have led to a number of tech industry layoffs in recent months, in addition to complications that arose from Apple’s implementation of App Tracking Transparency, or ATT.
Robotics, too: Brian reports that this week, Alphabet joined the growing list of tech giants making staff cuts amid ongoing economic struggles. The company’s robot software firm, Intrinsic, laid off 40 employees, a move that comes less than a year after Intrinsic acquired both Vicarious and Open Robotics — the latter having been announced less than a month ago.
Licensed fun: Dungeons & Dragons content creators are fighting to protect their livelihoods, Amanda writes in a sobering deep dive. Wizards of the Coast (WotC), the Hasbro-owned publisher of the game, plans to update the game’s license for the first time in over 22 years, releasing a new licensing system that would require any D&D content creator who makes over $750,000 in revenue to pay a 25% royalty to the company on every dollar above that threshold. In a sliver of good news, WotC has delayed the rollout of the licensing scheme, following a widespread backlash.
Colors, but E Ink: One of the cooler gizmos to emerge from the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show is E Ink’s color displays, Harri writes. They can spit out 50,000 colors at 300 DPI — way, way up from the last-gen model’s max of 4,000 colors. E Ink says it aims to use them to build a magazine reading experience that’s good enough to win over even the most demanding publishers.
Keys for days: My colleague (and boss!) Frederic reviewed the Keychron Q10 this week, a keyboard akin to Keychron’s other — but smaller — Alice-style board. He approved of the gasket mount and silicon gaskets, which provide a bit of flex while reducing ping and other noise. As for the Alice layout (the keys aren’t in a straight line, but the left and right half are slightly angled), it was easy to get used to, he said — and he appreciated that the five macro buttons under the knob could be mapped to anything you’d like. Read the full review for more.
Welcome home, Welcome Homes: In a profile, Mary Ann peels back the curtains on Welcome Homes, a proptech startup launched by the co-founders of cloud service provider DigitalOcean. The New York City–based firm — which recently raised $29 million — offers people a way to design and build new homes online, similar to other venture-backed companies (e.g., Atmos, Homebound) attempting to address the housing shortage.
I hear deepfaked voices: Microsoft’s new VALL-E AI model can replicate a voice using just three seconds of audio from the target speaker. But as my colleague Devin writes, it’s not necessarily cause for alarm — or rather, cause for more alarm than was already warranted by voice-duplicating tech. Voice replication has been a subject of intense research for years, and the results have been good enough to power plenty of startups, like WellSaid, Papercup and Respeecher. VALL-E is simply the latest illustration of its potential — and dangers.
Medium joins Mastodon: Online publishing startup Medium, originally created by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, is embracing the open source social platform Mastodon. Sarah reports that Medium has created its own instance — me.dm — to support authors and their publications with reliable infrastructure, moderation and a short domain name to make it easier for authors to share their usernames, among other things.
audio roundup
As always, TechCrunch had a winning lineup of audio content this week for your listening pleasure — although I might be a little biased. On startup-focused Found, TechCrunch startup battlefield editor Neesha Tambe spoke with Sheeba Dawood, the co-founder of clean energy tech provider Minerva Lithium, about the struggles she’s faced as a woman of color trying to innovate in the mineral manufacturing industry and what’s next for the company. TC’s dedicated crypto show, Chain Reaction, featured an interview with Polygon Labs, one of the biggest market shakers and layer-2 blockchains in the crypto space that’s building on top of the Ethereum ecosystem. Meanwhile, over at Equity, Natasha, Mary Ann, and Becca chatted about incoming deals from Inflow, Deel and Fidelity; layoffs and lawsuits at Carta; Microsoft’s much-rumored investment in ChatGPT and OpenAI; and SBF’s Substack debut.
TechCrunch+
Here’s your regular reminder to subscribe to TC+ if you haven’t yet. It’s where TC takes exhaustive, exclusive looks at trends, industries and emerging technologies. Here’s some of the most popular content on TC+ this week:
Crypto rollercoaster: While some crypto-focused venture capitalists are bullish for 2023, others see it as a hazardous time, Jacquelyn reports. Internal sentiment among VCs is a “wait and see” game, according to one source quoted in the piece; competition in the market is likely to heat up as investors write fewer checks and become more selective.
ChatGPT, meet VC: Some investors are (cautiously) incorporating ChatGPT into their workflows, as it turns out. ChatGPT being a specifically text-based support tool, automation could be making its way to rejection letters, market maps or even bits of due diligence, TC found — all in order to stay afloat in a changing venture landscape. Natasha M, Christine, and I have more.
Pivot when ready: Pivots aren’t necessarily bad news. Brian Casey writes about how he pivoted his deep tech startup to become a software-as-a-service company — albeit not without major challenges. In his words: “Pivoting from hardware to SaaS was the right move for our electric motor design startup, but the process wasn’t precisely linear.”

One week later...
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep...!
To spend all night researching tornadoes, quantum physics and other irregular occurrences was something Max Caulfield never thought she'd do. The phenomenon itself of the mysterious tornado was intriguing in its own way, but for somebody who got caught up in something greater, this would only be the beginning of something extraordinary.
Max awoke to the sound of her alarm going off. The brunette awoke, feeling a bit tired from staying up late last night for her personal research.
The first thing that she did was check her cell phone for messages.
From: CUTIE Good morning, Maxie-pad!!! Hope you got enough sleep after last night - you must look like a zombie XD
From: CUTIE I'm going to check on Kate soon, so I might see you out the front of the girl's dorms. Be a pal and go pay her a visit, plzzz????
Max snorted at Clark's message. It delighted her to see that he always had her and Kate's best interests at heart.
Slowly, Max sat herself up and got up onto her feet where she observed the layout of her dorm. It was a complete mess - disgraceful, even. The first thing that came to mind was how messy her room was, followed by the need to cleanse herself before she'd get ready for a free morning without classes. So she grabbed a towel and exited her room.
"... Courtney, seriously, do not forget I need those papers before tonight. Like, now. Thanks, cherie."
Opposite her room was Victoria Chase's room.
The short-haired blonde was fully clothed early that morning, conversing degradingly to her friend, Courtney Wagner. Victoria noticed Max's door open behind Courtney and stole a quick glance at the brunette walking out of her room before looking back at Courtney. Max proceeded to make her way down the hall a bit.
"Yeah, of course, Victoria. I'll get the tests and papers to you this afternoon. I am so on it. Consider it done." Courtney responded squeakily.
Right before Max was about to turn sharply to the left, she felt a shoulder bump hers. It was Courtney who'd purposefully bumped shoulders with Max as a result of her disliking of the silent, quirky photography geek. She frowned at Courtney before making her way inside the girl's bathroom. As soon as she stepped into the girl's bathroom, her blue eyes immediately marked the dirty-haired blonde girl brushing her teeth in her pyjamas.
"Hey Kate. How are you doing?" Max spoke sweetly towards the Christian girl.
Kate smiled fondly at Max and tucked some hair behind her ear. Her cheeks turned a bit red when Max approached her and smiled gallantly at her.
"Hi, Max. Thanks again for standing up for me last week." Kate said appreciatively.
"Anytime."
"By the way, Max. Do you still have my copy of The October Country?"
"Oh. Yes. Of course. It's great so far. I didn't realise Bradbury was such a poet."
"I know, right? It's so addictive. Can you please bring it back to my room this morning? I just need to take some notes for class."
"Absolutely. I'll bring it by after I shower."
"Thank you, Max."
Max entered a shower stall and closed the curtain and took off her clothes and turned the hot water tap. As soon as she turned it full rotation and the hot water hit her head and the back of her neck, she felt very relieved and instantly refreshed. She soaked herself under the hot water and used a soap bar to apply a thin, undetectable layer of skin moisturiser all over her body.
In the middle of her soothing shower, Max heard the door to the girl's bathroom click open.
"What's up, Kate?" A feminine voice belonging to Victoria Chase, sang out.
Kate's heart dropped in her chest when she heard Victoria Chase enter her room.
Ever since the blonde posted the sinister video of Kate's viral video, Victoria had done nothing but made it her personal goal to make Kate's life hell. Truth be told, she never truly intended to post it, but now that the video was out, she had easily manipulated herself to become more of a cruel person by mocking and chastising Kate Marsh over her biggest mistake: going to the party.
If only Kate had listened to inner thoughts...
"School."
"That's it?" Taylor questioned. "That video of you clubbing didn't look like homework."
"Don't be shy. I think it's awesome you set a tongue record on video." Victoria teased.
Kate finally had enough and stormed out of the bathroom.
"Oh boo hoo. I'm sorry you're a viral slut." Victoria said sarcastically. "I'm sure she had fun."
Hearing Taylor and Victoria talk down to Kate made Max's blood boil. It made her clench her fists so tightly that it almost made her nails cut into her palms. But since she was still hidden inside the shower stall, she got to eavesdrop on their conversation without them realising it was her.
"I know Nathan hooked her up. And you know he has the good shit," Victoria remarked.
"Preach it, sista."
"But... he has been a bit off lately. I mean, after him and Dork Price got into a fight, he's been on edge - more than usual, of course. You think something's worrying him?"
"I... haven't really noticed. He's always been this angsty and aggressive. I mean... I think I saw him with a gun-"
"A gun?! You're being ridiculous. I know Nathan. He's my friend. If he was in trouble, he'd come to me. And I know enough to know that there isn't anything that extreme that he has to buy a gun. I mean, it's not like Wells or Price is coming after him. Nobody can touch him since his dad owns nearly the entire town. He even told me in private that his dad is planning on demolishing that fish diner or whatever the eff it's called. Lame-ass restaurant for truckers and hobos."
With half of the bathroom to themselves, Victoria and Taylor continued about their business and drew out their make-up kits. As soon as Victoria looked at her own reflection, she became visibly repulsed by what she saw, obscuring that seemingly perfect image of hers.
"Yuck! I still have goddamn paint all over my face!" Victoria scowled, glaring at Taylor to her left. "Good thing my faithful minions took their sweet time bringing me a towel."
"We ran all the way-"
"Give it a rest, Taylor. Now I know if I'm in an accident, I won't rely on you or Courtney for help. You can hang out with Kate... or Max."
Disheartened by her failure to satisfy her friend, Taylor quickly drew the conversation away from her disappointing Victoria to ridicule Max herself.
"She's a weirdo with that dumb camera."
"Ohh, I hate that 'I'm so quirky,' crap. Anyway... Let's leave the link to Kate's video so everybody gets a chance to keep seeing her in action."
Words could not express how much Max abhorred Victoria for what she did to Kate. It was manageable for her to live with being bullied by Victoria and her cronies, but to pin such constant abuse and slander onto Kate was something entirely different.
Max knew that if Clark were present, he would certainly have many things to say about how much pain Victoria was causing Kate, and how he would love to put her in her place.
"You're such an evil beeatch. I love it!"
Using her lipstick, Victoria scribbled the link to Kate's viral video on the mirror.
Once they were gone, Max finished up in the shower, used her towel to dry herself off and put on her pyjamas. She approached the mirror Victoria graffitied on and wiped it away with her hand before washing said hand to remove the lipstick paint on her palm.
"Even if I can stop one person from watching it, it's worth it." Max thought to herself.
To make matters worse, by the time Max got back to her room, she found her photo wall - beside her bed - ruined. A few pictures were missing from said wall, with a clear message that was from Nathan for Max ratting out on him last week. In addition to her wall getting vandalised, Max received an anonymous text from someone who clearly was from Nathan Prescott.
From: ANONYMOUS Keep your smart mouth shut about everything.
From: ANONYMOUS Or I'm coming for your ass.
From: ANONYMOUS I know where you sleep.
The next thing Max followed up with was put on the clothes she wore regularly before grabbing The October Country and left her room to return it to Kate.
She walked a bit down the hall to Room 222 and clenched her fists lightly and tapped her knuckles on the door.
"Kate? You in there?" Max asked with a soft and gentle voice - as she always did around Kate.
"Yes, I'm here. Come in, Max." Kate summoned with a dry voice.
As soon as she got permission to enter her room, Max didn't waste a second to open the door and barge in to find Kate Marsh's room dark inside with the Christian girl herself seated at her desk with her elbow on her desk and her hand on her forehead.
Her first thoughts were how miserable Kate appeared. She observed the room and made mental notes about certain things such as Kate's violin, a pile of dirty clothes and other things. Max could not resist but act nosy about Kate's personal stuff. She looked at certain things like Kate's tablet, her Bible and even a family photo, which displayed a once happy and cheerful Kate Marsh.
Once she was done snooping, Max approached Kate and touched her shoulder.
"Uh, hey, Kate. I brought your book." Max greeted the dirty-haired blonde.
"Max, why did you step in between me and David the other day?" Kate questioned without even bothering to sound polite.
The conversation that unfolded about what happened the night Kate got drugged was something Max failed to investigate. By doing so, she felt she'd let Kate down. After spending an entire week researching quantum physics and such, Max was finally able to draw herself back to more pressing matters, mainly revolving around her best friend and her admirer.
"Max, can I ask you a question? And please, be honest." Kate requested, beggingly.
"Absolutely, Kate. Anything."
"Can you help me find out of Nathan Prescott helped me... or hurt me after that party."
The hurt behind Kate's eyes made Max's heart crack at the tremble in her voice. Her eyes were red and with bags under her eyes due to the lack of sleep and the amount of nights Kate spent crying in her room.
"Should I go to the police?"

Bad Business News: A Speech That Speakers Require To Be Able To Give
Today I read a popular psychology blog, PsychCentral, and there was a survey asking people just how much existing events impacted their mood. I found the results of this poll disturbing. Over 30% of participants claimed that their mood fluctuates depending on what is going on in the news. Another 30% stated they in some cases get depressed over the news. School - Facebook will create a school list if you add a school to your profile. It will immediately include your buddies that went to the exact same school if they added the exact same school to their profile as you did. breaking news breaking Twitter news pattern triggers a number of problems for professional reporters worldwide. One problem is that the news is never ever validated when it first strikes the social media by the public. Reporters have a duty to verify the story before it's published. When Joe Paterno's death was posted on Penn State University's website, the news went viral instantly. CBS sports got the story and tweeted it. The story was not only false, but insensitive to his family and buddies.
