Had the great Maya Angelou been alive to witness Saturday’s climax of the omnishambolic dog’s breakfast of a misbegotten legislative process that took place in the U.S. House of Representatives, surely she would have said, “When a political party tells you over and over again that they have no higher priority than serving Vladimir Putin, believe them.”
Then, again, it didn’t take the genius of Ms. Angelou to get the message. At the critical moment at which they had one last chance to avert a government shutdown, when Republicans in the House were forced to abandon all of their legislative priorities but one, the one they chose to ditch was the vital U.S. aid to Ukraine. In so doing, they sent the world an unmistakable signal once again that the first and guiding loyalty of Donald Trump’s GOP is as it always has been to the Kremlin.
Other messages were sent as well by the week of cringeworthy drama that was to the floor of the House as an untrained puppy would be to the floor of its new home.
Had James Madison, Alexander Hamilton or John Jay been watching, they surely would’ve been compelled to write a new Federalist Paper, likely entitled “On Legislative Clusterfuckery.” Kevin McCarthy, the ragdoll Speaker of the House, was toyed with and tormented by a MAGA alliance that appeared to be made up from a group of particularly inept extras from the movie “Idiocracy.” Neither principles, ideals, nor any sense of responsibility made an appearance during the prolonged floor fight.
Matt Gaetz, the chief tormentor, evoked Shakespeare. But not in a good way. He was more in the sort of character described by Macbeth when he spoke of “an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Gaetz and his misfit supporting cast, including Marjorie Taylor Greene, threatened to oust McCarthy if he did not meet their demand that he break the deal he had made months ago with President Biden to avoid the last government financial crisis. They wanted cuts to critical social programs including child care, Head Start, Meals on Wheels, law enforcement, housing and more. They wanted to cut the salaries of senior officials including Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. And they seemed willing to throw millions of government employees—including the military, the Border Patrol, the IRS, administrators of aid programs and others—out of work, thus harming the lives of tens of millions more Americans.
But they also knew that every recent past government shutdown—and all were the handiwork of Republican House majorities—backfired on its authors. And so, just as many had given up hope and every agency of the U.S. government was making plans for a government shutdown that would have begun at midnight of Oct. 1, McCarthy agreed to put forward a so-called “clean” Continuing Resolution that would extend funding for government programs until Nov. 17 of this year. They continued funding at prior levels. They even included funding for disaster assistance and cut a pay boost the House GOP was trying to give itself despite their reckless disregard for their responsibilities.
But something had to be given to the far right. The GOP needed some concession to make it seem as though their childish games had all been worth it. What did they choose? What was the one thing they said would be the last hill they would die on, the one issue so important to them that they would turn out the lights of the U.S. government to defend their position? It was to defund Ukraine aid. It was to settle for, in the words of progressive commentator Josh Marshall, “one sloppy kiss with Vladimir Putin.”
The message that it sent to the world was unmistakable. Economist Timothy Ash tweeted, “Staggering that the GOP, the party of Reagan, has been captured by Russian fascists.”
French writer and philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy wrote that U.S. aid to Ukraine should not be politicized, saying “it is about freedom and democracy, good over evil, right over wrong. Support for Ukraine is essential for the entire free world.”
Yale history professor Timothy Snyder wrote, “Cutting off Ukraine aid makes America unreliable, weakens the cause of democracy, threatens the international legal order, encourages tyrants around the world, and hastens Chinese aggression.”
Liz Cheney, one of the last Republicans with a conscience still standing, pointedly noted that the decision by the MAGA GOP to deny Ukraine funding came on the 85th anniversary of Neville Chamberlain’s 1938 “peace in our time” speech.
It was an apt point. Just as Hitler saw Chamberlain’s weakness as the opening he was looking for, surely Vladimir Putin saw the GOP message for what it was, encouragement for his aggression and his war crimes from the Party of Trump, a clear signal that all he would have to do was wait until the next election cycle and if they won, a GOP-led U.S. would abandon Ukraine, our allies in Europe, and reward Putin’s brutality by extending his reach ever more deeply into the heart of Europe.
Democrats and a handful of more moderate Republicans promised in the wake of the deal that they would seek and expected to get a new supplemental bill that would ensure Ukraine aid continued to be funded.
Let us all hope they are successful and it passes. But the damage has been done. The Putin wing of the GOP and all those who have enabled them made it crystal clear that of all their dangerous priorities, the most important was to strengthen America’s enemies, weaken our allies, and to put democracy at risk overseas just as they are doing here at home.
Nobody is cheering the last-minute deal to keep the government open that cleared the House and then, late Saturday, the Senate. McCarthy, seen as weak before, is seen as even more spineless and at risk than he was. The reprieve that was won is only temporary. The future is uncertain. While the Biden administration and Democrats handled this as well as possible, it is clear that getting anything done in Congress will be very difficult. And while the lunatics from the GOP’s MAGA ward may have temporarily gained control of the congressional asylum, they damaged their tattered reputations even further by achieving not a single solitary thing for any of their supporters—any that is, except their cackling Russian patron whose Bond villain laughter from deep within his bunker home could be heard round the world by all who understand the menace and his Trumpist supporters represent.

Putins Russia
Tumblr media
Vladimir Putin is a prominent political figure who has led Russia since 2000. His leadership has been marked by a combination of authoritarianism and nationalism, as he seeks to restore Russia to its former glory as a world superpower. There are many books and biographies available about Putin and his leadership of Russia. These works provide insight into the man behind the politics and the policies that have defined his tenure as leader of one of the world's largest and most powerful nations. One popular Putin book is "Putin: The Untold Story: Uncovering the Truth Behind Russia's Controversial Leader" by Russian journalist and writer Alexei Navalny. This book provides an in-depth look at Putin's life and career, from his early days in the KGB to his rise through the ranks of the Russian government. It also explores Putin's worldview and his vision for Russia, as well as his relationships with other world leaders and his impact on global politics. Another popular book about Putin is "Putin's Russia" by Anna Politkovskaya. This book offers a critical examination of Putin's Russia and the ways in which his leadership has shaped the country. It explores issues such as corruption, censorship, and the suppression of dissent, as well as Putin's controversial foreign policy and his relationships with other world leaders. Despite the wealth of information available about Putin and his leadership of Russia, there is still much that remains unknown or uncertain. For example, questions persist about the extent of Putin's involvement in various political and criminal activities, and there is ongoing debate about his legacy and his place in Russian history. Regardless of one's opinion of Putin and his leadership, there is no denying the impact he has had on Russia and the world. As Putin continues to lead Russia into the future, it is likely that books and biographies about him will continue to be written and debated, providing insight into one of the most complex and controversial political figures of our time. https://putin592.blogspot.com/2023/03/putins-russia.html Putin Book Putin Book Putin Book Putin Book https://putinbook.blogspot.com/ https://putinbook.blogspot.com/2023/03/putin-book.html https://beepso122.blogspot.com/ https://beepso122.blogspot.com/2023/03/loft-conversion-cost.html https://puppytrainingbraintrainyourpuppy.blogspot.com/2022/10/puppy-training-brain-train-your-puppy.html

Critical Thinking Lecture 2: What does the Future hold - current Social changes impact on Fashion and Textiles?
Fashion and textiles is majorly influenced by many things in society. Something such as consumerism, social media, politics and power and sustainability can majorly affect the fashion and textiles industry. This is usually caused by cause and effect which is the result between things and events were the result of one will impact the other.
There are a lot of powerful people who have a lot of power in the work, and with the way, the world is constantly moving forward and changing
it is hard to keep up or sometimes predict what will happen in the near future. major changes made by powerful leaders, such as Vladimir Putin or people with a lot of money, such as Jeff Bezos can impact the a lot of people as politics and power can sway a lot of people and influence the decisions
another change could be division of wealth and consumerism such as hushpuppies that were popular during the late 1994-1995 in New York popular with hipsters and were able to sell 430,000 pairs of shoes while only previously selling 30,000 shoes a year Hush Puppies were able to find a tipping point which is where trends and social behaviours cross one another and is popular, they had achieved this in 1995 and were awarded best accessory for the Council of fashion designers
Another social change that involves consumerism is the rise of fast fashion, e.g. boo have been constantly making profits upwards since 2019 and had gained a 50% boost during the pandemic. This also links back to division of wealth where rich business owners can continuously make cheap clothes for upscale prices and continue to make a profit.

Critical thinking Lecture 2: What does the future hold - current social changes impact on fashion & textiles
In this lecture we looked at how various social drivers, including sustainability, consumerism, innovation, division of wealth, social media and politics and power, have an impact on fashion and textiles.
We began with politics and power, with a 2020 list naming Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel as the 3 most powerful people in the world. A Forbes 2022 list also named Ursula von der Leyen, Christine Lagarde and Kamala Harris as the most powerful women in the world. This shows us just how influential politics is in defining world power, as the top listed people are all politicians who have a huge global reach and influence. There has also been a growth in highly nationalistic nations, for example Russia and China, with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin having extended/scrapped term limits, as well as controlling the media to allow for greater dominance over their countries and push a socially conservative, nationalist agenda.
One example of how this impacts the fashion industry, is the collaboration between designer Leoniv Alexeev and the Russian Military Defence for a line of ready to wear clothing, titled 'Army of Russia', that was unveiled at Moscow fashion week in 2015. This clothing line was inspired by Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, in which Russian forces illegally took over the Ukrainian territory. Alexeev chose to reject his usual flashy suits in favour of army boots and balaclavas, stating that "I do not sew army uniforms, but I can help make the army attractive to people. This is my personal form of patriotism". The collection is also described by the general director for military supply shop 'Voentorg' as being for people "leading an active lifestyle and sharing military values — patriotism, camaraderie and mobility". This is a clear example of how politics influences fashion, as the designers of this collection were able to capitalise on current military/camouflage trends to promote overtly nationalist propaganda and encourage Russian civilians to buy into Putin's beliefs and ideals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then went on to discuss the division of wealth, with Oxfam this year stating that the 'richest 1% bag nearly twice as much wealth as the rest of the world put together over the past 2 years'. Division of wealth, coupled with a rise and fall in consumerism can often lead to a 'tipping point' for brands. For example, the 1990s Hush Puppies revival, in which the American footwear brand rapidly rose in popularity due to the shoe being adopted by hipsters in downtown Manhattan and as a result, designers beginning to feature the shoes in their collections. The brand also won the prize for best accessory for the Council of Fashion Designers in 1996, reaching their 'tipping point' and gaining a newfound financial success.
Tumblr media
When discussing consumerism it is vital to look at the impacts of fast fashion, with online clothing sales in August 2020 up 97% from 2016. Multi million pound company Boohoo's profits were also reportedly up 50% during the pandemic, despite the scandal in which the company was under investigation for modern slavery after a report found that they were paying workers in a Leicester factory as little as £3.50 an hour, as well as operating during lockdown with no safety measures being put in place to protect their workers.
Whilst overconsumption and fast fashion remains a pressing issue, recently there has been an increasingly prevalent anti-consumerist attitude and desire for more sustainable practices, both in fashion and textiles and day to day to living. Evidence of this, includes WGSN naming 'Resourceful' as a SS 22 trend, describing it as 'making better with less, for a more respectful and sustainable future', as well as Hannah Borg (from WGSN), stating that 85% of consumers are now thinking about sustainability.
As a group, we discussed how our brand could work to limit overconsumption. One idea that we had was to use old or unwanted jewellery to embellish our garments, utilising beads or gems for applique or taking whole pieces like necklaces and attaching them as decorative chains to the garments. We also thought that we could set up a scheme in which customers donate their jewellery to be repurposed for garments or in exchange for a small product such as a branded tote bag or scrunchie.
Tumblr media
We then went on to look at innovation in fashion and textiles, discussing how robotic technology used in factories could actually benefit humans and spare them from jobs which are both physically and psychologically detrimental to their health. We also looked at how AI is transforming the fashion industry, in terms of forecasting, social media and content creation. As a whole, the class agreed that technological innovation is best used when it's in collaboration with human designers or alongside physical products, as opposed to being seen as a replacement for these things. For example, luxury fashion brand Khaite sent look books and fabric samples to buyers and editors, which included QR codes that showed AR 3D renderings of their new products.
Tumblr media
Finally, we looked at social media. We talked about the dangers of it and how easily we are manipulated through algorithmic programmes that monitor our online behaviours and push certain content based off what a viewer interacts with most frequently. An algorithm that is knowledgeable about a user can be seen as a positive, as we no longer have to filter through endless content and are now presented with material of interest almost instantly upon loading an app or website. However, Kari Paul from the Guardian stated that 'the algorithm frequently gives rise to more extreme views' and that 'one report in 2021 showed that more than 70% of extremist content found on YouTube was recommended to users by the algorithm'. Some brands today are attempting to combat the issues with social media. For example, in November 2021 Lush announced that they would be taking down all social media accounts until the platforms 'take action to provide a safer environment for users'. The company feel that social media is doing more harm than good and that it goes against their ethos of promoting wellbeing and relaxation with their products.
Whilst I agree with Lush's decision to go 'anti-social', this is an unrealistic idea for a small brand starting up. Lush is already an established and popular brand with a large following and therefore do not have to be reliant on social media to advertise their products. Our brand, however will use Instagram as a way to gain a following and interact with customers whilst promoting our product. We also hope to use Instagram to educate our customers, with social and cultural commentary about south Asian tradition and the importance of preserving that in our brand.

Lecture: Critical thinking 2
In the lecture today we began to investigate the current social factors and the impact that these will have on the future of fashion and textiles and in turn our brads that we are creating. In the lecture we were looking at some key causes those being sustainability, consumerism, innovation, division of wealth, social media and power and politics.
We started by looking at power and politics, and who the most powerful people in the world are. We looked at the list of top 10 most powerful people in the world from watch mojo in 2020, some of the name being Vladimir Putin (Russias president (2)), Jeff Bezos (Founder of Amazon (6)), Bill Gates (Microsoft founder (7)), etc... we then looked at a list of the most powerful women in 2022 from Forbes & Mcgrath with number one being Ursula van Der Leyen other names bing Kamala Harris. this list was curated based of four main metrics: money, media, impact and spheres of influence. We talked about the influences that some of these people have with people such as Vladimir Putin and Chinas president Xi Jinping changing the constitution allowing them both to stay in power beyond 2024. fake news is another big issue, with people like Donald Trump being names the king of it. Adam Curtis who is a documentary filmmaker said "Everyone knew it was fake, but because no one had any alternative vision for a different kind of society, they just accepted this sense of total fakeness as normal." In the film 'The Social Dilemma' it said that fake news travels 6 times faster than real news, this is a very scary thought as eventually we won't know what real and what's not and we won't be told about the real issues that are happening in the world instead we will be fed all this fake news maybe to distract from the real issues that we should be talking about. Another example would be the fact that in 2022 teachers were told that they would get a 15.9% pay rise when in reality the average pay rise for teacher in 2022 was 6%.
We then went on to talk about division of wealth. A quote from Oxfam in 2023 claimed that the richest 1% bag nearly twice as much as the rest of the world put together in the past 2 years. Division of welsh liked another key factor that we were looking at consumerism, the example we were shown were Hush Puppies in the early 1990's they were selling around 30,000 shoes a year , then during the mid 1990's the hipsters in down town Manhattan started to wear them making then cool in bars and clubs, by the end of 1990's they were selling 430,000 shoes a year. By understanding division of wealth will allow us to understand who our customers are going to be, this could then in turn lead to us being able to find that tipping pint for our brand. We then looked at the rise of fast fashion. During the pandemic online sales were up 97%. Consumerism links in with sustainability, with people taking what is called a Scandinavian approach to living where they live with 'just enough' and not too much. When talking about sustainability more and more people are thinking about it when they shop. I found an article talking about the Covid-19 pandemic and peoples lives and buying habits in terms of sustainability by Mckinsey
Tumblr media
As you can see more and more people are thinking about the environment when they are shopping. Not only are people thinking about the environment when they are shopping but they are also expecting business to care as well, this is important for us as when we are designing our brand as we need to make sure that sustainability and the environmental impact of our brand is one of the most important things.
Tumblr media
We then talked about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) which are now more important than ever, these are goals that are set out by world leaders they are set out in order to create better world. These goals have been set out in order for us, business, the governments and the general public to make a better future.
Tumblr media
Then we went on to talk about innovation and about the future of robotic technology, and the impact that this will have on the fashion and textile industry. We talked about AI (artificial intelligence) and the impact that its having on the fashion industry. they are now doing jobs that would have traditionally been done by humans such as forecasting, stocking systems and talking to customers. we then spoke about the fashion shows that was held in 2022 the first fully digital meta verse fashion week, however there were lots of negatives it was said by people that attend that it was very glitchy and the technology that they used the show wasn't compatible with the technology that we as humans have at home. The final point that we spoke abut was social media, in the world that we live in now most people are on some form of social media, however this may not be a good thing. the world that we live in now we have more and more children and young adults suffering with mental health problems. Again in the film 'the social dilemma' they talk about how social media is a drug as it prays on out addiction and uses psychology to control us as the user. Because of the impact that social media is having there are some brands that have chosen to take themselves off social media such as lush or luxury brand Bottega Veneta. Both these and other brands have taken themselves off social media. A big question for us when we are creating out brand is do we need a social media platform? if we so how are we going to use it safely ie having out cloth photographed on real people and real bodies, or is it that offline the new luxury and by not having a social media does that make us stand out and work as a use (unique selling point) in the world that we live in today? However as a small start up brand we will need to think of ways in which can get out brand name out there.
The final part of the lectures us getting into out groups and being to discuss these topics in relation to our business. A big thing for us is sustainability and making sure that out brand is sustainable not only in terms of the materials that we use which we hope to use some dead stock but also making sure that everyone that is part of our business is paid a fair wage and gets fair holidays and things like that. In terms of consumerism we need make sure that we have a full consumer profile and we know who are customers are going to be, this links to division of wealth as we develop our brand we need to make sure we know how we are going to price our pieces and then who is going to by them, knowing how much disposable income people have will help us to target our products to the right people.

BE REAL by Davivid Rose Via Flickr: Vladimir Putin is a devout Orthodox Christian. "In recent years, he has increasingly highlighted his apparent religious faith by 'wearing a silver cross around his neck (and) kissing icons', wrote Deborah Netburn in the Los Angeles Times. In a televised stunt in 2018, when he was campaigning for re-election, Putin immersed himself in the freezing waters of a lake – an Orthodox Christian ritual to mark the Feast of the Epiphany, commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan." (I suspect the silver cross was hanging from a chain or a cord that was "around his neck".... I doubt the apparently not-very-intelligent writer meant that there actually was "a silver cross around his neck"...) "...got to get your puppy buried so he can go to heaven." ---Singer/songwriter/actor Johnny Cash, in a 1976 episode of the TV show "Little House on the Prairie". Cash, once addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates, was arrested in 1965 for possession of amphetamines. In this episode of the show, he plays a crook who is impersonating a Christian preacher. He tells a little girl whose pet has died that when she goes to heaven, it will be waiting for her there...(I have not seen or heard of any evidence that life after death exists. I HAVE seen overwhelming and extremely convincing evidence that when a person dies, so does their consciousness.)
