I told myself I would work on A World Away From Autumn today, so here's a little snippet from it.
It was impossible to not think about, even for Andrew, living in his small New England town so far from it all and without the slightest, previous care for a continent an ocean away. He was surprised himself that he was now so meticulous about keeping up with all the updates he could get his hands on. His father had become used to him reading the paper over his shoulder—Andrew was too impatient to wait. And yet he had sat through all eleven minutes and twenty-five seconds of the president’s speech about the war without moving a muscle.

Aggregate news of Palestine For April 21, 2024.
Aljazeera News:
Videos show widespread damage from Israel’s deadly West Bank raids.
Blurb:
Israeli forces have killed more than a dozen Palestinians during a three-day raid on the Nur Shams refugee camp, which has left the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarem in ruins. (Video embedded in article)
Nearly 200 bodies found in mass grave at hospital in Gaza’s Khan Younis
Excerpt:
Palestinian civil defence crews have uncovered a mass grave inside the Nasser Medical Complex in Gaza’s Khan Younis, with 180 bodies recovered so far, Al Jazeera has learned, as Israel has continued bombardment of the devastated coastal enclave for more than six months.
[...]
In a statement late on Saturday, Palestinian emergency services said: “Our teams continue their search and retrieval operations for the remaining martyrs in the coming days as there are still a significant number of them.”
[...]
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, devastated Gaza’s two largest cities and left a swath of destruction across the territory.
At least two-thirds of the casualties are children and women. It also says the real toll is likely higher as many bodies are stuck beneath the rubble left by air strikes or are in areas that are unreachable for medics.

CNN:
Israel concludes deadly West Bank raid as war devastates Gaza.
Summary blurb:
The US House of Representatives has approved $26.4 billion in aid to Israel, as part of a wider package of foreign aid, which still needs to pass the Senate.
The Israeli military concluded one of its largest offensives in the occupied West Bank since October 7 on Sunday, saying it killed 10 "terrorists." The Palestinian health ministry and Wafa news agency said 14 people, including a child, were killed in the raid, which left a path of destruction.
Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli settlers killed an ambulance driver trying to transport Palestinians who had been attacked, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society. A spike in violence by extremist settlers in the occupied territory has led to more sanctions by the US and EU.
Strikes between Israel and Iran this month spiked fears of a widening regional conflict in the Middle East, but the two sides appear to be stepping back for now.

Today (11/14) the IOF has entered/attacked parts of al-Shifa Hospital. Additionally, raids and arrests have happened in Jenin, in the West Bank. Here is a link to Al Jazeera's current live updates page.
The following are some excerpts. Alt text is included, but I've also put transcripts under the read-more.

It’s just after 7am (05:00 GMT) in the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel.
Here’s a recap of recent events:
Israeli soldiers have entered the surgical and emergency buildings at al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s chief of hospitals has told Al Jazeera.
Dr Ahmed El Mokhallati, a surgeon at al-Shifa, earlier described to Al Jazeera the fear within the hospital as Israeli forces attacked.
Israel’s attacks on al-Shifa started just hours after a White House spokesperson said – without providing any evidence – that Washington has “information” that Hamas is using Gaza hospitals.
Doctors, human rights experts and analysts have rejected similar claims made by Israel and reiterated that hospitals are protected under international humanitarian law.
Image 2:
Ardi Imseis, an international law expert at Queen’s University in Canada, says Israel has a history of presenting questionable and unverifiable evidence to the international community.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Imseis added Israel carries the burden to “produce evidence” and prove its claim that the hospital has been used by Hamas as a base.
“The object of the attack is a civilian object. Until such time that the Israelis provide proof that it has been converted into a military object, the civilian nature of the object does not change,” he said, referring to al-Shifa Hospital.

Israeli forces make several arrests during raids across West Bank
According to the Palestinian news agency, Wafa, at least five people have been arrested in Jenin city in the occupied West Bank after Israeli forces raided several homes in the area.
Witnesses told Wafa that Israeli forces surrounded the residence of one family in the Jabriyat neighbourhood of Jenin, demanding that everyone leave the house before the arrests were made.
Israeli forces surrounded another house in the al-Marah neighbourhood and made arrests.
In Tulkarem, two brothers were arrested in the Shuweika neighbourhood, while a man and his young son were detained in Beit Fajjar south of Bethlehem, according to Wafa.
In Beit Daqo, northwest of Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrested two young people, the agency said.

Analyst ridicules Israeli claim al-Shifa is a Hamas ‘command centre’
Palestinian analyst Thabet Al-Amour played down the military significance of the Israeli raid on al-Shifa, stressing that the hospital is an easy target.
He said a single Israeli warship could besiege al-Shifa, which sits no more than 400 metres (437 yards) from Gaza’s shores, with its firepower.
“The occupation army said, ‘We have a specific mission of eliminating Hamas’,” Al-Amour told Al Jazeera. “Did they think the leaders of Hamas and the leaders of the resistance will be waiting for them in the main lobby of al-Shifa Hospital – with the captives alongside them?”
He added: “This is madness, absolute madness … It’s a hospital.”

Al-Quds Hospital has run out of fuel and shut down its key operations on Wednesday.
An overnight Israeli bombardment on Jabalia refugee camp in the north and Sabra in western Gaza has killed dozens, based on reports from Al Jazeera Arabic and Palestinian news agency Wafa.
A total of 106 aid trucks and ambulances entered Gaza through the Rafah crossing on Wednesday, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PCRS). The organisation has said that the supply still does not meet the enclave’s needs.
A Palestinian medical source told Al Jazeera early on Thursday that in the last 24 hours, the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza has recorded at least 65 deaths and more than 100 injuries from the continuing Israeli bombardment. A huge blast has been reported near al-Shifa Hospital in the early hours of Thursday, according to Reuters.
On Wednesday night, a Palestinian man was fatally shot through the heart by Israeli forces in Tabaka village of Hebron, according to Al Jazeera correspondent Zein Basravi.
Israeli forces used four Israeli bulldozers to destroy streets in Jenin, Wafa reported early on Thursday.

Excerpt:
Over the last few days, disturbing videos have shown mobs of Israeli Jewish youths rampaging through occupied East Jerusalem and attacking Palestinians.
“Every evening this week, dozens of young Jews walked around Jerusalem’s city center, chanting ‘Death to Arabs’ and attacking passersby with stones and tear gas,” Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The situation escalated further on Thursday, when more than 100 Palestinians were injured as a result of mob violence provoked by the far-right Jewish group Lehava.
On Thursday night, a death-chanting Israeli mob headed for Damascus Gate, a landmark entrance to the walled Old City in occupied East Jerusalem.
One chant reported by Israeli journalist Nir Hasson was Ha’am doresh Aravim ba esh – “The people demand Arabs in the fire.”
As Palestinians gathered to defend the area, some with stones and bottles, Israeli occupation forces fired at them with stun grenades, tear gas and water cannons.
More than 20 Palestinians required treatment in hospital, according to the Red Crescent.
Israeli Jewish mobs reportedly attacked Palestinians across the city and vandalized cars and property.
In the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, settlers attacked a Palestinian woman driving her vehicle with stones, injuring her in the head, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The Art of the Application | Work Statements and Cultural Statements
Tumblr media
We’re sharing insider tips for your NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Application.
The NYFA Grants team has created a series of blog posts with information to help you prepare the materials needed for your application(s). In this edition of The Art of the Application, we’ll share tips on writing a Work Statement and guidance in helping you decide if you should include a Cultural Statement.
How Do I Write a Work Statement?
This may be a new term to you, but the concept will be familiar. The Work Statement is like an Artist Statement, in that it should describe the primary interests of your practice. Whereas an Artist Statement is often broad and overarching, your Work Statement needs to be specific to the work you are presenting within your application.
Your NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Work Statement can be up to 100 words in length and is required. It may seem daunting to distill your work down to 100 words or less, but trust that it’s a worthwhile challenge! However, be mindful when you condense your statement into a short format; don’t let your ideas devolve into vague sentences or generalizations. Instead, hone in on some of the key factors that inspired the work in your application, and describe how these elements relate to some of the larger ideas within your artistic practice.
As an exercise, consider this question: How would you explain your work to someone who has never experienced it before?
Keep it simple. It’s best to avoid language that is overly theoretical or philosophical. You don’t want to make your statement so complex that someone has to read it two or three times in order to understand it. Keep in mind that the panel is reviewing hundreds of Work Statements. Statements that speak clearly and provide concrete examples allow the panel to access your ideas more quickly. And remember, with only 100 words, you should never stop at the first draft!
Tumblr media
Should You Supply a Cultural Statement?
Another aspect of the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship application is the Cultural Statement. This statement gives applicants the opportunity to describe how their practice relates to, or is rooted in, a cultural technique, tradition, or community.
The Cultural Statement should give the panel insight into a specific cultural community or practice, and highlight any techniques that may need further context.
Describe how your background in a cultural community has shaped your work.
Share any relevant cultural history or stories that influenced your work.
Provide more detail about the techniques you use, where they originated, and why you choose to continue this tradition.
It’s good to take advantage of any opportunity an application gives you to describe your work, but you should only submit information that is appropriate to your practice. Supply a Cultural Statement only if your connection to a cultural community, technique, and/or tradition is integral to your work. If not, don’t spend your time trying to argue an angle. Instead, focus your attention on strengthening other components of your application. Keeping your materials relevant, informative, and focused is key when submitting an application to an artist opportunity in general.
Depending on the discipline you’re applying in, you may have the opportunity to also provide a Technical Statement and/or Excerpt Explanation. These statements will allow you to go into further detail, so don’t feel like you have to say everything in your Work Statement or Cultural Statement.
