Did y’all know there’s a rollercoaster in the UK themed after hypnosis?

Now as a self-proclaimed theme-park enthusiast and a hypnosis writer (can I call myself a writer? Anyways) you know that I am b-lining straight towards it any time I happen to be in Alton Towers.

That’s right, let me introduce you to: The Smiler.

The whole gimmick is the Ministry of Joy brainwashing you through the ride to be happy all the time. Through smells, spirals, a world-record amount of inversions, and more, the big machine in the centre, “The Marmaliser”, basically reprograms you.

The tagline? “You belong to the Smiler”.

UGH it’s so good!! The theming is great, they commit to the bit, and every piece of merch has spirals plastered all over it. And you just know I own like half of that gift shop.

Anyone else here been on the Smiler? And if so, what were your thoughts?

it's also kind of insane how fan reliant their business is. aside from are you scared, too many spirits, ghost files that literally use fan submitted stories as their premise, the marketing done by the fanbase is huge. i alone have several watcher posts over 10k notes on here that have breached containment and made it to people's dashboards who don't know what watcher is or never seen an episode. i've had the watcher socials use my posts as memes on their own sites. even the biggest memes that are still from their bfu days (hey there demons, it's me ya boy) is good marketing. what are they gonna do when all of this goes away?

Love the idea that in universe fanon changes the way the Minecraft people look. Doc wakes up in crocs one day, nods, smiles, and carries on. He's a little less reserved when he wakes up a quadruped, but it's kind of cool.

Jimmy, meanwhile, wakes up with fledgling wings after Last life. They take a while to fledge, and he thinks the colour might change. The whims of the universe are odd, after all. No. He wakes after Double life with the bright yellow feathers that had grown in throughout the sessions, and cries for the soulmate he lost. No longer does he hear whispers across worlds. No, now he can tell before someone dies. Never enough to prevent it, only enough for it to hurt. He sees Tango again and tastes death on his soul fire hair.

Some people change by their dream. Gem, for instance, is equally comfortable with horns and hooves or with butterfly wings.

Grian sobs as his wings, once a relief, brightly coloured and so, so different to the monochrome of the downside up, give way once more to purples. Tears fall from a thousand eyes forced open, watching.

Joe is delighted when, for a brief month, he sees through rainbow eyes. They fade, but turn up on Tuesdays and Rain days.

Cleo sighs the first time her arm falls off, and searches for Grian for sewing advice, remembering a disconcerting era of plastic eyes and floppy bodies.

Some folk barely notice. What's the difference between being something that looks like a normal guy but isn't, and being a normal guy? Aesthetically, not much. Sometimes, they can't tell until they smile and people flinch, until they take their helmet off and choke, until the disguise they painted for themself refuses to come off.

Zedaph, comfortably a sheep, wakes up in bed disoriented after a particularly surprising shrieker stack. The potential consequence of a shock to prey animals hadn't occured to him before... It would make a great Zedvancement.

As far as walkback/apology videos go, I think that this one was really solid in terms of how it handled everything! Here's why I think that:

1. They were straight to the point, no beating around the bush. It was a 4 minute video, and they started addressing stuff right out of the gate.

2. They actually apologized. Not an "ohhh I'm sorry you all didn't understand our vision" but an actual "we messed up" and "we're sorry for the way we handled this as well as the way we communicated it" (those last two are actual quotes)

3. They addressed many of the specific concerns we've been having (although not all of them; I'm sure some need a little more planning) which shows that they were actively listening to us. They addressed:

-Us feeling like our current support was not appreciated by them/that they were shunning their youtube audience

-The poor delivery of the original video (I think they probably could have said a little more about this one but I digress, they still addressed it)

-their statement about how anyone could afford 5.99 a month

-how they kinda screwed over their Patreon when they did this

-Exactly why they decided to do this, clarifying more than just saying "we wanted higher/more tv-quality content"

4. They gave a plan of DIRECT ACTION as to how to fix the problems:

-they gave their patrons free access to watcher TV

-they changed the model of watcher TV so that videos are placed on YouTube, with ads, 1 month after they're released on watcher TV without ads

-they've offered refunds for anyone who already paid for watcher TV who isn't down with the new model.

Overall, while I'm still a little wary of them given their initial release of this, this is a really big and honestly well-done step in setting it to rights.

my predictions as to what's next for watcher:

they post an apology video, then compromise by making the streamer free with ads. they paywall *some* content so people have an incentive to sign up and pay.

steven steps down as CEO. maybe not immediately but some time this year. i can't imagine the personal relationships between the three of them wouldn't be damaged after this. steven voluntarily leaves, and shane and ryan either replace him with someone else or have no choice but to run the company themselves.

if they do go through with this, i can imagine the streamer failing after a year or two, and ryan and shane leaving to start yet another youtube channel, without steven this time.

i just can't imagine them completely walking this decision back by saying "oops sorry guys! the streaming service is gone, we're not abandoning youtube - please let's all pretend this stupid announcement never happened." apparently they had investors that invested money into this service so probably can't reverse this decision even if they wanted to.
