hey :) do you mind sharing some more about the skam austin panel today?

yeah for sure!! i’ll put what i remember under the keep reading tab for ppl who wanna hear about it :) i only went to the panel, not the rewatch (bc money lmao) so there are probably some other things they talked about that i missed, but i’m sure there are other ppl on here that can fill you in on any gaps that i miss!

it was valeria (jo), julie (megan), and lakeisha* (shay), and pedro (p jo) on the panel (he was the moderator, the other three did most of the talking), though they did mention other castmates throughout :,)

*lakeisha was the name they went by on the panel, and in the info before the panel it said they use they/them pronouns, so that’s how i’ll be referring to them throughout this

all of them started out by talking about what they’re doing currently, julie said she’s dropping out of school because her therapist told her “you as a person matters more than you as a student” which i thought was a great sentiment as well

lakeisha said they’ve been making a lot of clothes and music (also throughout the whole thing they kept showing us their shoes and they left to pee like halfway through something they were answering one time hfjskaj)

they then talked about their audition processes (val had the most chaotic series of audtions omg i would love to see her audition tapes)

val originally read for either jo or megan, and she had literally just moved there like right before casting and almost didn’t go to her audition

she said that she decided to be the loudest person in the room so that they couldn’t ignore her, and that carried her through most of the rounds of auditioning

she said that at the end she said “if you don’t choose me, which you should choose me, but if you don’t, please choose another latinx actress because you have no idea how much it means to see someone who looks like you on screen”

julie auditioned because she was hoping julie (andem) would bring lisa and tarjei and she basically wanted a free meet and greet djkfshk

she found out about skam og on tumblr !! she’s one of us 😌

she thinks julie andem is the coolest person in the world

they told her that she was pretty much everything they envisioned megan to be, so they cast her fairly early on and then had her partner with the marlon prospects

giovanni, who eventually played tyler, auditioned for marlon and they kissed during their audition even though they weren’t supposed to

julie went to high school with till who ended up playing marlon and people would always ask her what it was like to get to make out with him and she was just like .... we just working bruh

lakeisha found the ad to audition on instagram and decided why not because it said it was a paid job

they looked up a bunch of improv games the night before because they had no experience and had no idea what they were doing

in the audition julie asked what the tattoos on their hand meant (and also the one thing lakeisha was excited about being out of contract was that they could get as many tattoos as they wanted without asking for permission)

they all had a lot of love for julie andem and loved working with her

val said that she’d always try to make julie laugh and she said that julie is the reason og and austin are so good, because it’s her story and her vision

they roasted the shit out of fb too (as they should)

basically fb ghosted them and never renewed the show but also never cancelled it so technically they don’t even know if anyone else could get the rights to reboot the show somewhere else (lakeisha said ‘skam austin onlyfans’ lmao)

i don’t remember which one of them said it but they said fb is like an inconsistent dad lollll

they also think that fb sort of finessed julie/her team because they were under the impression that it would be like og where they had their own website for the show and everything, but then it ended up just being a facebook page

they also filmed promo for season 1 that never ended up being used but they don’t know why

lakeisha felt super disrespected by the fact that not only did they not get their season, but also the fact that they just dropped the show like it was nothing and none of them even found out that they probably weren’t getting more seasons until they saw that their instagram accounts were gone

everyone was upset about the igs getting deleted too because they put so much work into the content on there for it all to just disappear

val said “no one tells a story like the one that was about to be told” and everyone agreed

val said that if the show would have continued, jo would have been undocumented and they would have shown her trying to navigate college (not only were we robbed of a jo season, we were robbed of college seasons 😤)

jo x jo were definitely going to be a thing

val said that when they wrapped s2 she was like finally!!! because now they could get into the stories that they really wanted to tell and really knew would make a difference (everyone vehemently agreed)

they were proud of the fact that they’re the most diverse cast and that they don’t just treat the characters of color like sidekicks like the other remakes do

julie talked about how skam france was the only remake to have jonas not accept isak right away when he was coming out and how it was suspicious that he happened to be the only non white jonas and that was the choice they made

val said that druck is the only remake she’s watched but she likes it

they also talked about how, even though it’s great that the cast was so diverse, practically everyone behind the scenes was white

val said that she didn’t really think about it much at the time because she found it hard to speak up since she was very young and inexperienced but looking back she wishes jo’s body wasn’t so fetishized as a latina (she didn’t clarify whether she was talking on a production level or within the fandom, but she talked about costuming so i assumed she meant more on a production level)

they all wished there was more representation off screen as well as on

shay x megan was brought up and julie said that shay was going to have her own love interest (am!even !!!!) come season three, and that it wouldn’t have been megan

she also said that megan was mostly just confused and like ‘haha i kiss girls when i’m drunk’ but then she also said that megan and shay never had feelings for each other at the same time so 👀

she was upset that they made megan and marlon get back together at the end of season 2 because she wasn’t a fan of them together, but she said it also makes sense because a lot of teen girls go back to their toxic exes even when they know it’s not good for them

lakeisha said that they hated shay’s acrylic nails because it didn’t make sense to them for her to have them (especially since shay was a musician)

they also said that they’ve been pretty confident and open with their sexuality since they were around 12, and that one time in middle school they dated a boy because he had an xbox and then they were like oh no is this toxic am i using him because he actually has feelings for me?? hdskafja

they also said that the cfgc music happened because they heard that the boys from og also had a song and at first i was like wtf are they talking about but now i think they meant the penetrator song 💀💀

julie has a cfgc shirt :,) and they all stole a bunch of clothes and stuff from set, val said she took a bunch of outfits that jo never wore which makes her sad to think about now

val’s favorite scene to film was the car scene in s1 before the party (she said it was one of the best moments of her life) and julie said she liked that one as well (val said there’s a shot of her looking into the camera and flipping it off but they didn’t include it in the show, i feel robbed)

people asked how it felt for lakeisha to be the first lesbian isak and they said that they didn’t feel like they were, because they didn’t really get the chance :(( but they also said that the idea itself was very intimidating and there was a lot of pressure around it

they also said that they and gio were very very close both on screen and off, they said it wasn’t even like they were an extension of one person, that’s how close they got

there were a lot of improvised scenes, particularly with val, and she also said that incorporating spanish into jo’s dialogue was mostly improvised

julie, val, and pedro also all talked about how they’re all mexican, and how each of their life experiences vary so much from one another, on the show and off and julie said megan’s upbringing was a lot like hers

they all also said that they liked the music the show used and a lot of them have emotional attachments to a lot of the songs

val said she wishes they used more frank ocean and i agree

they also said they’re not sure if there are bloopers or anything, but they’d love to see them if there are

i’m trying to think of anything i missed ahhh i feel like they talked about so much but i think i’ve got the key points soooo

summary:

when you are young, they assume you know nothing

It all happened so fast.

Nothing was supposed to happen at all.

Not like this.

It was just meant to be like every other Friday night they’d spent together.

Olivia had heard that when faced with a near death experience, you’re supposed to see your life flash before your eyes. Your childhood, your loved ones, happy memories – almost like a film reel of all the experiences you took for granted that you were about to lose.

Olivia thought that sounded like bullshit. She hadn’t seen her life’s film reel as they hurtled towards the thick oak tree, no, she was too panicked to think of anything at all, too high to even really comprehend what was happening.

The group was on their way to a frat party after pre-gaming at Olivia’s apartment off campus. It was a given this pre-game involved white powder, organised into neat lines with a black American Express, a product of the company Olivia was keeping since she started college the previous fall. She hadn’t set out to join the party scene, not one to waste the opportunities her mother had worked so hard to give her, but Olivia’s boyfriend was convincing and charming, and she was in love.

Not that any of that seemed like it mattered now, since “being in love” didn’t seem like a reasonable excuse for letting someone clearly high out of his mind get behind the wheel of a Range Rover.

Olivia climbed out of the mangled wreck, hands shaking and bloody (she wasn’t sure if was hers or someone else’s), and stumbled across the bitumen, the strewn glass sparkling up at her as if were taunting her. She blinked away tears, but they fell anyway, thick and hot down her flushed cheeks. Her throat constricted as she sobbed, as she willed herself not to hyperventilate and make the situation worse.

It was a fruitless attempt, of course, as Olivia whipped her head around, panicky, looking for any signs of life from the others in the car. Of course, she could have walked back over to the garbled mess of metal and looked for herself, but she couldn’t bear it. Olivia couldn’t bear the thought of what she might see – her friends, or admittedly even worse, her boyfriend, dead.

The only clarity Olivia had was that this was undoubtedly the last time she would ever touch drugs, no matter the outcome of the night.

Olivia shoved her hand into the pocket of her jeans clumsily, the cocaine making her jittery, and was relieved to see her iPhone still worked despite the smashed screen. She dialled 911 with shaking hands, biting her lip hard enough to draw blood as she waited for them to pick up.

She answered the operator’s questions almost robotically, terrified to give herself away, but she couldn’t avoid the situation for long.

“Have you, the driver, or any of the passengers taken any illegal drugs tonight?”

Olivia was silent, before she finally answered quietly, “yes.”

“Ma’am, I can’t hear you, I’m going to have to ask you to speak up,” said the operator, who had a comforting, almost motherly tone.

It made Olivia feel even more ashamed.

She cleared her throat. “Yes, we all have,” Olivia said more clearly, her voice still raspy. She must have screamed more than she realised when they crashed.

“Okay. Do you feel safe enough to wait on the side of the road for the emergency services to arrive?”

“Yes.”

“Thank you ma’am, ambulance and police are on their way. You sit tight now.” And with a click, the operator hung up and left Olivia alone with no one else around but the car full of her friends who she couldn’t bear to look at.

The ambulance and police cars arrived soon enough, their loud sirens jolting Olivia out of her pacing alongside the road.

In a frenzied blur, paramedics were covering her in the warm foil she had only ever seen in the movies and were making their way over to the mess of a Range Rover. Olivia could do nothing but watch as they shouted, placing her friends’ bodies onto stretchers and wheeling them into the waiting ambulances.

As a black body bag was placed onto a gurney, the sound of the thick zipper reverberating inside Olivia’s skull, all she could think of was that it must have been instinct that had her reaching for Rafe’s hand in those final moments.

KAS' WEEKLY WRAP UP #4

I was really looking forward to TV & Film Production Week! It's the area I'm most interested in and even though I came in knowing absolutely ZILCH about how it all works, I finished the week having learnt soooo much. I couldn't be more grateful, this was exactly what I was looking for before trying to get my foot in the door. I'm feeling so much more pumped and excited to start applying for schemes/apprenticeships/jobs!!!

Day 1 - BBC

I learned about how to pitch a potential news investigation on this day and how the process looks like. You have to fill out the BBC News Commissioning Form, which I'd never even heard about.

I pitched an idea about investigating the often awful conditions of council flats, which was inspired by personal experiences, the recent ITV investigation into a mould-infested Croydon council flat and of course, Grenfell. The presenters gave me advice on how I would be better prepared to pitch this idea by gathering my own evidence of photos/videos and testimonies from residents. I hope that through a news story given by the BBC, a trusted media source, more awareness will be brought to this issue by giving residents a platform to voice their concerns. Those that live in council housing can be disregarded for being poor or BAME, so I hope more will be done in the future to avoid housing conditions becoming urgent or disastrous again.

One phrase I especially like that was said was: "Just because you can’t tell EVERYONE’S story, don’t stop it from telling SOMEONE’S story".

We also heard from Vinnie Shergill, a producer from Strictly Come Dancing! It's crazy to get to learn from someone that worked on a show I LOVEEEEEEEEED when I was younger. The outfits, the dances, the judges, Bruce Forsyth (rip <3)! An amazing opportunity to listen to someone that had to work from the bottom all the way to where she is now - mega inspiring. Some of the advice she gave that I'll try to take on board were to be tenacious and hardworking, to ask lots of questions and to have a good work ethic. Overall, great day - it's a 10 from me!

Day 2 - Warner Media

I really liked getting to see the sets of The Repair Shop. It was really refreshing to learn about the production from a more practical standpoint. My favourite part from this section was learning about the cameras and the different shots used - the presenter was very informative and interesting.

I also liked the Food Unwrapped sessions, especially having to come up with a food you've always wondered how was made. As a team, we came up with Scorpions and Snakes in Your Alcohol? Found out some CRAAAAZZZY facts about how they gut the snake so it will stay coiled in the bottle to show that it was fierce in spirit. Sickening... also I don't know about y'all but I'm not too keen on the idea of another pandemic so please, ppl, stop eating things that shouldn't be eaten.

I found the presentation given by the Production Coordinators especially useful as that's something I've been interested in and it was great to learn how you're involved right from the beginning to the end - meaning longer contracts andddd getting to know all the gossip :P

Day 3 - Docs with Matty Groves

Great, great, GREAT session delivered by Matty Groves. He was SO informative and I feel like this was such a great opportunity I would never have had access to before, so I'm really grateful to MediaTrust.

I loved watching the example docs, they were sooo good. They were able to deliver such powerful or heartwarming messages in a short amount of time. My favourite probably has to be Pockets, Oor Selfie and Treasure. I loved the idea behind Pockets, the wholesomeness of the elderly couple in Oor Selfie and the brilliant editing and filming style of Treasure, it looked like a really professional doc!

It was so lovely to hear everyone's story behind their treasure item and I have to admit I got a bit emotional. It really was such a unique and special session to have after the past few weeks, so of course, Day 3 was my highlight of the week.

Day 4 - UKTV

I was amazed at the amount of research that goes on behind the TV industry. It just never crossed my mind that Science would be used in an industry like this, but I learnt how important it is to learn about the viewing behaviours of the country to shape content.

They use neuroscience to learn what kind of content is best to keep a viewer engaged. For example, watching someone going away from the camera triggers conceptual closure, which makes your brain lose interest because it thinks it's the end. Therefore, it's better to keep such clips until the end to maintain interest - amazing.

Day 5 - Channel 4

I lovedddddd the session from Channel 4. Although it's been a while since I've watched Channel 4 on a TV, I definitely remember it being one of my top channels to turn to when there was nothing else to watch. So I could really appreciate the fact that they are built on TAKING RISKS. The video montage given on this was really, really powerful.

I also never knew they don't produce their own shows, it's all commissioned. I'm definitely going to be applying for the Production Training scheme - it's paid and is open to those who have basic experience.

After learning more about Channel 4 as a company, I definitely feel like they stood out to me more than the other companies. I was impressed with how much they've invested in their diversity (The TV Collective which gives opportunities to ten BAME-led production companies). I also rate all the schemes/apprenticeships/work experience they have on offer to help newbies into the industry.

I also LOVED the "Complaints Welcome" video, such a good laugh. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

Got a whole bunch of you on related themes, so I’m just gonna do this all at once: a bunch of questions about DW, spinoffs, merchandise, business, management, support (and protest) and whatnot. In no particular order.

Ok there are petitions and peaceful boycotts directed at DW but problem is they aren’t addressing the EPs and things they, not DW, did so how are we to sign them, how to handle this when this could at best confuse the situation and not give any results and at worst, make matters even worse about what we want regarding DW addressing things?

Here’s what companies care about: money. Everything else is gravy.

If you want a corporation to pay attention to your complaints, then you need to figure out their sources of income, and find a way to threaten that. If the social reprobation is high enough, damage to the brand can translate into lost sales, but the tempest required to make that happen must be much, much larger than anything I’ve seen the fandom manage.

I’ve been saying this all along: voices are far more powerful than signatures. If twenty thousand people wrote or called in, and said what they liked vs what upset them, that would have a far greater impact. Certainly a lot more than a list of names with no emotion beyond a request that may not even be something DW can, or would, fulfill.

And don’t even get me started on mailing stuff in. Cute, but hardly actionable.

Do you know what kind of contracts DW sign, as in, are they obligated to air all seasons, can they choose not to air them, do the companies they work with (netflix, wep) have a say or more say than them? Who gets the last word? Is airing all seasons squarely on DW or more?

As I’m not a corporate lawyer employed by any of the signatories, I can’t tell you what the contract stipulated. What I can tell you is that a contract of the magnitude of the DW-WEP-Netflix agreement probably had a dissertation worth of riders covering the different types of possible defaults or breaches, and the penalties for each. Additionally, the contract also likely covered what constituted ‘satisfactory delivery’ of the product.

To take it down to a really simple level: you place an order at a restaurant. You expect to get it, eat it, and pay for it. You don’t expect to be told, “hey, we burnt your steak and we’re out of butter for your sweet potatoes, so have some green beans instead,” and then be told you still owe the full amount, anyway.

Netflix wouldn’t settle for ordering (and paying for) something never delivered, anymore than you would. Sure, any corporation worth their over-inflated stock options would try --- but that’s the point of contracts, to make sure they can’t.

Netflix paid, DW delivers, end of story.

...do you think ppl in charge didn't think EPs would tell they made changes and also thought they'd manage to bury it? And then they got in trouble and DW is going thru changes for that reason? -waves at DW goings on and silence.

I got lost in all the pronouns, there. Who’s the first ‘they,’ the EPs or DW execs? Is the second ‘they’ referring to the same as the first? So... I’m not really sure what you’re positing, but if the ‘DW is going through changes’ is implying DW’s got a shakeup and/or is promoting its head-of-TV to president and that’s somehow connected to two newbie EPs screwing up?

I’d say the chances are so infinitesimal as to be nearly in the negative. (I should also note, the press release listed successful shows Cohn oversaw, yet oddly did not include VLD.) DW is not a three-person start up; it has stakeholders and a board and a C-suite to satisfy. Cohn got that promotion ‘cause she’s got a track record going back thirty years, most recently growing DW’s TV division from 8 to 800 in five years.

Most corporations tend to announce their new CEO or President like someone woke up that morning and went, hey, I’ve got a great idea. Truth is, it’s usually in the works for at least a year, sometimes several years, or more. The only thing that has me side-eyeing the announcement is the silence around who’ll fill Cohn’s previous position.

But that’s again less to do with a single series, and more to do with what it says about DW as a whole, business-wise.

What meaningful changes could the new president Margie Cohn make that would be different than the last one? Also I'm sorry if your getting a bunch of Voltron/DW questions lately, you just seem to be the most knowledgeable person on this platform.

I’d be willing to bet I’m far from the most knowledgeable person; I’m just someone not bound by an NDA, and curious enough to do a bit of digging and jaded enough to talk about (most) of what I find.

A president can have immense impact on a company’s direction; that’s kinda why they exist, to set that high-level strategy. That said, Cohn will be bound by all contracts signed by her predecessor. The TV side (barring someone filling the shoes she left) will probably continue as it was. The theatrical side (which she’s taking over) will be where we’ll probably see any major changes.

And even those aren’t likely to be on films currently in production. Hell, given theatrical animation can take up to five years, I’m not sure that’d show much change, either. Look instead to changes in investors, new deals, and new properties.

What do you think DW will do about a sequel if there’s really no bible? Theres tons of plot holes & abandoned storylines. VLD will never feel satisfying, and fans already argued with different interpretations based on conflicting content, without a nice satisfying explanation...

I know this is the first of a three-part ask, but I’m skipping the rest because the only answer possible is to your very first question: the bible doesn’t matter.

Any new series --- even a continuation --- will construct its own bible. Same as we’d do in fandom: they’ll patch together what they can, fill in blanks as they need, and gloss the rest, or retcon it outright. Even if there were a bible, diligently followed, that doesn’t mean the next series is automatically beholden to it. Some franchises would care (ie Star Wars) while others might let a reboot mess with the details (ie Star Trek).

For every continuation, there’s gradations in between, since otherwise what’s the interest for creative minds, if you’re obligated to follow someone else’s script exactly? So, no. The absence of a story bible doesn’t preclude the next iteration making its own, as it needs, to whatever extent it requires.

I was wandering around the hot topic online store, and i noticed a shirt that raised a few flags and questions. it's the 'Voltron Location' shirt. it has all the paladins in different places in a star globe chart thing? with what might possibly be planet designations. plus Lance is the only one not inside his blue colored bubble. Keith is in Red and Shiro in Black again. it's interesting at least.

Nearly all the shirts use the same base images, just changed up. It feels a little like someone handed a designer a half-dozen images with a request for forty-something designs --- and now HT is just throwing them all at the wall to see what sticks (or sells).

HT’s stuff has been pretty consistent, from what I’ve heard: Shiro is Black, Keith is Red, etc. Considering the t-shirts seem to be selling out regularly (along with various other sidelines), I’d say someone is savvy as to the fact that the segment of fandom spending the most money is also the segment that prefers the S1/S2 lineup.

If that’s what customers want, it’s smart business for DW to provide.

(Yes, that applies on more than one level.)

There are VLD comic books being released by LionForge Comics, are those considered canon? Do LM and JDS have any involvement? They take place before Season 7and8 but I don't wanna support the original EPs.

Every fandom has its own stand on what counts as canon. Sometimes (especially with adaptations) you’ll find fandoms being explicit as to whether they’re book or movie (ie HP and LotR). I expect the same will eventually shake out in VLD’s fandom, too.

From everything I’ve heard, Hedrick and Iverson were handed the comics and ran with it. I suppose that would argue for seeing the comics as canon, being they were written by people also writing the main series... but from what I can tell, it’s one-way. The show affected the comics, but nothing in the comics ever affected the series.

That said, your purchases have nothing to do with the original EPs. All you’re doing is telling DW you like the VLD-iteration of Voltron.

What are your thoughts on the final vld poster? I feel like it’s missing the end. Allura is randomly staring back into nothing.

It’s a clever idea to do a poster for each season, but it’s not something I’ve ever paid any attention to, really. If it were drawn by the head writer? That might mean the artist had more insight than, say, a storyboarder or animator. But even then... cool picture, still not-canon. I’m only interested in canon.

Do you think that Voltron was rushed purposely by the EP's. [...] Wouldn't this effect the quality of, well, everything? I feel as if they got frustrated with the show at that point and just wanted out.

Dude. There are times I sit here and just stare into space, bewildered yet again not just at the thought of 39 episodes released in one year --- but doing that with 26 as a last-minute cut-and-paste rearrangement. All I can tell you is that what I’ve seen from animation people and aficionados (and friends) is that three full seasons in one calendar year is just bonkers.

If DW hadn’t wanted the schedule that packed, the EPs aren’t the ones getting the say. That’s a DW-Netflix thing. I really wonder whether DW used VLD as a guinea pig. TH went a year between S1 and S2, and the numbers slumped badly. Perhaps DW wanted to know if more episodes, more often, would keep fan interest high? DW has experienced execs, but they’re all from broadcast; how you arrange and time things in the brave new world of binge-watching is a completely different beast.

So, it’s possible it was less of a rush job to get the show out, and more from a desire to see what'd happen to release so much, so close together.

I still think it’s a bonkers schedule, though.

"Relaunch the whole property" sounds like they won't continue expanding the whole vld universe and they'll make a new itineration. Though if they do a spin-off it'd likely be on the vld universe surrounding the new "Legendary Defenders" from the epilogue. And "especially given the response" do you think after the negative response from s8, wouldn't be better for WEP to not keep working with Dreamworks? Or maybe they need to clean their brand from vld fiasco? What can you say about all of this?

I can say you might try re-reading, because boy is that a radical interpretation of the text. Remember, Jeremy was speaking before S8, and all indication is that he was caught off-guard as much as the fans. Re-read in light of Jeremy (at the time) appearing to expect S8 to be a crowd-pleaser.

...I'm becoming more confident in my belief that DW has something planned for Voltron. I mean they are still heavily promoting the show, LionForge is still publishing Voltron comics, and merchandise is still being made. These don't seem like the actions of a company trying to get people to forget a show.

You’re not wrong. Up to the last few days of 2018, DW gave every indication they wanted S8 quietly buried. Nothing they’ve done since has fit that pattern --- including the anomaly of failing to announce their 2019 series. Something is going on, that’s for certain.

Did DW really just throw the VAs to the wolves [for] three days? and there's still no official stance? One panel was enough. They had [the VAs] take the heat for them? But thankfully fans felt sorry for them? Which could also have been the goal, shut the fans up [with] the VAs of the characters who got the worst treatment and who love their characters ... Yes DW this really makes me trust you /sarcasm/

I don’t think that was the original plan. Let’s pretend DW released its 2019 schedule via press release in the first few days of January, and among those was an announcement of a VLD sequel or spinoff, coming late 2019.

People wouldn’t be fussing over putting the VAs through three panels. They’d be complaining we didn’t get the biggest room for every panel. The majority of the fandom doesn’t trust the EPs, and is wary of DW --- really, the only ones who retain any goodwill, at this point, are the VAs. So who better than to assure a nervous fandom about the goodness of the second iteration than the VAs whose characters were most shafted by the first iteration?

What breaks this is that immediately after S8 dropped, Josh and Kimberly went silent on twitter. AJ slipped into passive-aggressive snarking; Jeremy fell off the radar and usually he’s pretty interactive with his fans. Bex pretty much wiped VLD from her stream, possibly including deleting older tweets. Neil tried to engage and made a hash of it, bless his heart.

Josh and Kimberly are consummate professionals who reliably promote the series after every season drop, but their radio silence continued for almost two weeks. This wasn’t the first season that came saddled with controversy; if there was a time to go quiet, it was after S7. Something else was going on.

I have strong suspicions backed by research, but if I’m right, I’d be stepping on a major legal landmine. In the interest of not getting blown up, I’ll only say that the VAs appearing for those three panels (and their low-key and mostly diplomatic hedging around VLD’s conclusion) was a good sign that all parties involved are willing to work things out.

[DW was] quick to handle the Season 7 backlash and have stayed mum on what is arguably a much worse reaction to the 8th and final season.

I believe the S8 of voltron we got was not the original ending we were supposed to get and highly edited. My question is why? What was the point of changing the original ending? [The] radio silence from DW and the cast is driving me nuts. I wish DW would make a statement.

DW is in an interesting place. Its TV side is barely five years old, but dominated by execs with long-time broadcast experience, predating vibrant interactivity afforded by platforms like twitter, tumblr, or instagram. DW’s background as a theatrical company also seems to incline it away from any ongoing engagement with the audience. It releases a movie and by the time that hits theaters, DW is onto the next thing.

It’s a strong contrast with production studios like Zagtoon (Miraculous), who penned an open letter to their fandom about production delays. Or little studios like Wonderstorm (The Dragon Prince) whose deft use of twitter and tumblr sets their brand apart. Or Federator (Castlevania), with their witty marketing campaigns and willingness to engage with fans. Even Disney was willing to be open about its errors with Tiana, and to make clear how it was striving to do better --- so there’s no excuse that only small studios do such outreach.

My guess is that DW's core leadership is from the school of business in which admitting a mistake is tantamount to ritual suicide. Don’t blink first, or maybe the rule is never let them see you sweat, but whatever it is, DW is turning into a textbook case of how silence can damage a brand.

Companies have multiple avenues to reach customers directly, now. Our modern technologies are a two-way street, and good companies leverage that to create not passive fandoms but active communities. It takes work, careful planning, and some level of transparency --- something old-school execs find highly uncomfortable, to be honest --- but in this day and age, those are crucial building-blocks to achieving any kind of audience loyalty.

DW isn’t going to render itself obsolete (at least not overnight), but it's on a track to end up as the studio whose work audiences only watch when there’s nothing better being offered. Unfortunately for DW, there’s a hell of a lot of other studios out there, and they're all offering something better.

Goblin film crew Q&A

One Goblin staff answered questions on his community site yesterday. So, I translated them. [source 1] [source 2]

I was happy to join some big projects like The Descendents of the Sun (태양의 후예 2016 KBS), Signal (시그널 2016 tvN), and Goblin (도깨비 2016 tvN). Happy new year, everyone. If you want to ask a question, feel free to post here. I'll try my best to answer anything I know.

Q. Is Eun-Tak's father a god? A. There is no mention about him in the script.

Q, What is your job? How did you guys come up with the bridge near the Yongdap station? (* the bridge where the Grim reaper met Sunny) A. I was one of the lighting staff. The location scouting team is in charge of the filming locations.

Q. Why did reincarnated Wang Yeo and Kim Sun forget their previous life? A. Neither the couple nor Ji Eung-Tak drank the tea of oblivion, but only Eun-Tak could retain her memory. I just guess the writer has some intention in doing so.

Q. Did you join the wrap-up party? A. Just the first round of the party.

Q. How many hours could you sleep during the filming? A. Average 3~4 hours a day.

Q. Is there any sequel, spin-off, or movie version? When is the director's cut going to be released? A. It depends on the production company and the director.

Q. Are the tombstones in Quebec real? or a composite picture? A. They are props. We came back to Korea with them. (LOL)

Q, How about the atmosphere of the set? A. We had enough production budget, so it was more relaxed and more comfortable than other dramas'. TV viewers might feel uncomfortable about its PPL (product placement advertisement). I heard at an early stage that it made approximately 8 billion won (6.8 million USD) only from PPL, but it directly and indirectly gave benefits to us, the film crew.

Q. Is Kim Go-Eun (Eun-Tak) pretty? Q. She is pretty. It was my first time to work with her, and she is a charming actress.

Q. Why didn't Yoo In-Na get old when she died? A. She died at the age of 68. She got transformed into her younger self after entering the tea room. A. Yes, they already showed the same transformation process with other deceased souls.

Q. The actors look playful in the making films. Did you enjoy the filming? Is there any sensitive moment? A. It's not sensitive, but the actors had a really hard time. Mr. Gong Yoo collapsed one time, so we had to quit filming that day. The intense cold weather made actors have a tough time.

Q. What year did Eun-Tak get reincarnated? A. It took about 100 years, according to the script.

Q. Goblin was the drama of my life. It reminds me of Doctor Who (UK drama). Did the writer watch Doctor Who or Highlander (1986 American movie)? A. A film crew like me don't know about what environment the writer is working in. However, I know the fact that she writes interesting scripts. Me, too. Goblin is the drama of my life.

Q. How was Kim Go-Eun (Eun-Tak) in person? A. She is cute!! and has a good personality!!

Q, Are the actors OK, off the record? A. Of course. I can safely say that the funny atmosphere in the making films you can find on the internet is representing the reality.

Q. It had great cinematography. What is the secret? Were there many camera crew or lighting staff? A. Basically, our filming team has five members in charge of one camera. We had two cameras rolling at the same time, so we had 10 people in one filming team. Our lighting team had 6~8 members including one lighting director. Of course, we need post production with DI work, but the basic filming is the most important work.

Q. Wow, congratulations for the great drama. A. Thanks. Because of your love, we got a vacation to Phuket as a reward.

Q, I love the reward vacation culture that all the film crew, directors, writers, actors get together. I remember it started with the suggestion of Director Shin Won-Ho (tvN's Reply 1997, 1994, 1988 series). Have a nice vacation! A. I've already been to Phuket after Signal (시그널 2016 tvN). So, I'm going to enjoy it.

Q. How much did you guys pre-shoot before the broadcast? A. The test shooting was on September 1, 2016. We started its first shooting on September 4. The scenes in Canada were shot in early to mid October. I remember we were shooting episode 6 when it started to be broadcast on TV. (December 2, 2016)

Q. The set and Mise En Scene look expensive. Could you explain about it roughly? A. I don't know about the set because the art team is in charge of it. They are the same members as those in charge of The Descendants of the Sun (태양의 후예 2016 KBS) and Mirror of the Witch (마녀보감 2016 JTBC).

Q. Is there any possibility to make a spin-off with the pichi couple in the future? (* Korean viewers call Grim Reaper and Sunny as Pichi couple, because his hat looks like Pizza hut logo and she runs a chicken restaurant. In addition, his identity was revealed by the branch of peach blossom.) Q. I have nothing to do with the production company (Hwa&dam pictures). It entirely depends on the writer.

Q. Can you reveal some impressive deleted scenes? A. Frankly speaking, we didn't shoot scenes in order of the script. So, we often realized "Oh, it was that scene!" after watching TV. So I don't know exactly what was deleted.

Q. Does the Blu-ray contain some lost scenes? If so, what kind of scenes? A. Unless you are a data manger or a scripter, most film crew are not able to know what scenes were deleted. As the final day got approached, few crew could get their sanity.

Q. Isn't containing the deleted scenes a must to sell the blu-ray? There are many people who bought it for the supplements. A. I'm just a film crew, so I have no rights to say in that regards. It depends on the production company.

Q. Is it true that you guys shot the ending in advance? A. Yes, we shot the ending while filming in Canada in October. The ending was predetermined. The biggest reason why we didn't pre-produce this drama is that the writer hoped to communicate with the viewers' responses during the broadcast. I heard she had a hard time with The descendants of the Sun (태양의 후예 2016 KBS) because it was 100% pre-produced. (* She said in an interview that she felt something lacking in pre-produced drama)
