^^ Slapped Together Fan Fic Writer Asks
8. What project(s) are you currently working on?
Every October for the past...(thinks) --Every October for the past Oh No That Can't Be Right, I become motivated to work on a Girl Genius horror/suspense WIP. When the 31st passes I inevitably stop. Perhaps this year it Exists enough that I can at least incorporate it into my recent spate of posting anything I have an opening chunk of sitting around before Halloween? Unclear; schedule has been weird this month. Also a surprising number of people piped up to say they liked Cinnabon AU, so now I'm feeling determined to carry that farce forward! Even if it means I have to actually reread Death Note for the first time since middle school.
23. How do you choose where to end a chapter (if you have multi-chapter works)?
(head in hands) If there's enough of it, usually. I tend to ride out the first burst of inspiration writing whatever comes to mind out of order and then go back and patch the holes, so if at least one complete scene of whatever comes first/next (or for achronological collections just something complete-feeling full stop) is no longer in flux it's on the table to kick out to fend for itself, to streamline the working draft file if nothing else. Sometimes the structure of the section asserts a particular length. (I think the longest one has insisted on being is the 5k agil genderbend first meeting?) Sometimes it doesn't in which case my "yeah that's a chapter probably" minimum is around a thousand words. Which is too short by many respectable metrics of reader enjoyment but look sometimes that's what's happening.
Other times I'm actually attempting some kind of structure involving the chapters, which is pretty unique piece to piece. (the Inception thing is Very Structure; the hanahaki thing is sort of structure-in-progress but in a way somewhat guided by wanting to deploy poetry lines as chapter titles.) The most meaningless chapter cuts I've ever executed was with the dynamic duo origin AU(...? thing) where I had a single 7k chunk and decided to experiment with breaking it up. Those are spiritually the commercial break cuts in an episode you're watching on DVD. Don't think I'll do that again but hey now I know, scienced.

whenever i open your readmores from the dash and catch up with them later i'm bamboozled by the fact that as far as i can tell your blog theme specifically prevents anyone from liking or reblogging your posts from it. there are. no interaction buttons. that i can find. is that actually intentional? what is motive? privacy wanted?
It's not! I've been using this theme for years because I like it aesthetically, but nobody has mentioned that to me before (though larger pictures and chats don't always show up properly in it). The reblog and everything show up in the upper right for me.
Is this a problem for anyone else?

power signalling
Kneeling.
Ordered to kneel as punishment or as a show of deference.
Shoved physically to the ground by hands on their shoulders, maybe a kick to the back of the knee.
Picking themself up off the ground but only getting as far as hands and knees.
Crawling because they haven't got the strength to stand anymore.
Dropping to their knees from exhaustion or despair.
Personal space.
Casually invading it.
Uninvited touch - from the deeply creepy to something as simple as a firm hand on the shoulder.
Standing too close - especially if taller or otherwise physically stronger.
Conversely, hurrying to get out of someone's way.
Eye contact.
Staring someone down. Who is the first to look away?
Averting eyes for one's social superiors. Trying to de-escalate by avoiding eye contact.
Too frightened or ashamed to look someone in the eye.
Insisting that someone maintain eye contact while you're talking to them. Insisting that someone never look you in the eye.
Singling someone out just by looking at them.
More generally, Attention.
The room falls quiet when they walk in.
Who cuts in, and who gets talked over. Ignoring those who are beneath your attention.
The excited attention given to the object of respect and idolization.
The careful, wary focus given to a potential threat.
Deliberately attending to something else to appear less threatening. Deliberately burying oneself in something else to avoid attracting unwanted attention.
Codified status behaviours.
Bowing to one's superiors. Bonus points if there are differentiated kinds of bowing for different status differentials.
Soldiers coming to attention when a superior officer comes.
Saluting. Who greets whom first?
Serving food in a particular order.
Standing up when a respected person enters the room.
Non-verbal threats.
Just resting a hand on a weapon, or perhaps even just near a weapon.
Cracking knuckles or rolling shoulders. Clenched fists. The little come-get-some-then life of the chin.
Stepping from a conversational stance into one that's balance for fight or flight.
Pointing a weapon at someone. Casually brushing aside a weapon.
Conversely, de-escalation and surrender.
Open hands, spread in front of them. Hands above head.
(Raised slowly, transitioning from the simple whoa-calm-down gesture to full on surrender as the situation gets tenser.)
Going still. Slow, careful movements being sure to keep hands where they can be seen. Laying down weapons.
Hands on head. Getting down on the floor. Deliberately making oneself vulnerable to prove non-hostile (or non-resisting) intent.
Alternately, deliberately showing "vulnerability" to demonstrate how little of a threat you consider the other person.
The slouch of villainy. Open posture, casual, relaxed in the face of apparent danger.
Casually putting weapons away or turning one's back, confident that they won't do anything.
Signs of fear.
Flinching. Trembling. Closed defensive posture. Tension. Backing away. Fidgeting. Lip-biting.
Arms hugged close to chest. Or refusing to lower defences. Checking for escape routes. Trying to insist that they don't come any closer.
Offer of or requests for help.
Extending a hand to help someone up off the ground. Reaching out a hand in silent plea.
Do they have to ask for help? Are they willing to accept it? Do they get a choice? Who has plenty and who has to rely on the other's goodwill?
Picking someone up off the ground. Carrying them. (Dropping them?)
Adjusting someone's clothes. Withholding aid.
credit:@just-horrible-things // @whetstonefires suggests:
A character can vastly expand their area of influence by laying a hand on a table, for example. If you're standing on opposite sides of a large table, and one of you puts your hand down, that can symbolically take you up into the other party's personal space in a much subtler and more deniable way than actually getting up in their face.
This can be used equally well to convey affection or threat.

I'm going to TRY to tag people I didn't tag last time and who I know aren't currently doing this, but as I regularly state, my memory is Bad and I am too lazy to go look this up. SO! If I tag you a second time by accident and you have already been tagged and don't want to do it again, please ignore
No pressure tags: @goddammitjim, @lttrsfrmlnrrgby, @jaggedstartalk, @lambourngb, @howdyrat, @doodledrawreblogs, uhhhhhhhh @whetstonefires, @byebyeskylark... @keensers OKAY that's probably enough for now ;)

so the op of that anti-voting post DMed me just now, transcript follows:
slash-dot-com
even if all democratic systems were inherently always going to be "inadequate" i think our american democracy is severely flawed in glaring ways, its just literally antiquated and i think there are much better democratic systems. our voting system is not representative of the people either, which almost everybody admits, i'm not saying theres some nefarious mastermind behind it, but it is a design flaw, whether the flaw was made on purpose or on mistake. its easy to quit american democracy because it doesnt even seem to Want you to participate, like from so many factors its difficult to engage with it in any meaningful way
whetstonefires
yeah it's not a fantastic system
it's just also pretty pointless to try to punish it for that by leaving it in the hands of people who hate you
it won't get its feelings hurt and try to woo us back
i used to be really mad about how stupid and ugly it is but the more history i've studied and the older i've gotten the more it's been like, oh human society is a clown show always
slash-dot-com
but for several election cycles the popular vote nor the general will of the people have even impacted the people who are elected, the people who hate us are in power because the system is designed to benefit them
whetstonefires
i mean?? biden did in fact defeat trump, and the democrats did make gains in congress in both the last two cycles
slash-dot-com
my vote in my state genuinely does not matter in federal elections, in local elections yeah sometimes it does, but there needs to be an overhaul on our democracy and its election process so its more reflective of the people. currently its so broken that voting legit doesnt change anything
biden sucks
whetstonefires
he sucks less than trump tho????
like to a screamingly significant extent
slash-dot-com
i'm trying to make a more general and large scale point than one single election cycle and sitting president
whetstonefires
and i've made my counter point which is that not voting is not a constructive response to the problem
slash-dot-com
doing other things than voting is just as effective if not more so than voting, so not voting in a broken democracy isn't nonconstructive
whetstonefires
and in fact the broad tendency of idealists and leftists to be disengaged from the political process because it's dirty and inadequate, especially at the local level, is the *cause* of many of the systemic problems
doing other things can be constructive, but not voting is a non-action
and advocating against voting is a *harmful* action
so it's not constructive
the other things and the voting are independent of one another
slash-dot-com
thats just really ill conceived, i'm honestly just surprised by that response, you should really think more deeply about this. i'm not sure what you think this way of thinking and approaching politics is accomplishing
and then i couldn't send anything else (it was going to be a ?? because that didn't really follow naturally but before they said that i'd been typing a bit listing all the voting-related activism that it made sense to dip on due to alienation from the process, because energy and funding better spent elsewhere etc, but opposing voting itself was not in the same category) because they blocked me, which is just rude. you started this conversation man!
also i can't figure out how to make tumblr let me block them back.
so i made a post about it lmao.
i still don't know what positive good they think arguing against voting is supposed to achieve. like why is that a good use of energy.

Summary: Keith's solution to his steadily escalating problem is to hide it and hope it goes away. So instead of noticing what's the matter with Keith, everyone notices the steady escalation of his hiding. It's only marginally an improvement. (It's not an improvement at all.)
Author: @whetstonefires
Note from submitter: This is a very good 'Keith turning physically galra' fanfiction. Love some body transformation horror and self-identity crisis.

#i do object to considering ulysses a legitimate anarky though#he was appropriating lonnie's identity#ulysses is the General#and he wants to be tim's nemesis so bad - via @whetstonefires
That is valid! I'd probably be more careful if I was able to respect Lonnie more. I just ... don't care about him.
Meanwhile, Ulysses is a ridiculous brat who I find amusing to mock. Much more fun! He DOES want to be Tim's nemesis! He is not. Dumb little baby having temper tantrums because he isn't allowed to kill people.

Mikke’s SVSSS recs (for @cerusee) below the cut --
Authors for whom all their SVSSS stuff is worth reading: miscellea / The Feels Whale  x_los  feynite
Individual stuff I liked: The More You Don't Know by Neery  - SQQ manages to avert the Abyss Arc, but with some consequences
and judgment is just like a cup that we share by Kieron_ODuibhir (whetstonefires) - my favorite of the Identity Reveal genre so far, SQQ and SQH get outed by a third party; has a sequel where they don't succeed in Communicating Well but it's incomplete
write me well by AMereDream - what if Shen Yuan was another creation of Shang Qinghua, who just wanted a friend
Celestial Afterglow by elanor_pam - an alternate outcome of the Huan Hua Palace arc, my favorite Shen Yuan voice
Spill the Tea by tabulaxrasa - another Identity Reveal fic, this one voluntary, plus some kidnapping sideplots
Master of Dual Cultivation (series) by esama - a sort of New Game Plus where SQQ gets to go back to the start of the series from the end and do better this time around
That's NOT A REAL TROPE you Hack Author! by Boom_After_Dark (Boomchick) - a very cracky, slice-of-life and meta one; after the main series ends they start getting "extras" that Shang Qinghua wrote on commission for trope prompts. Very silly, and some chapters are better than others, but there were some very sweet moments in there and Shang Qinghua has a surprisingly melancholy emotional arc towards the end
Benign Deviations by benwisehart - Bing-ge and Bing-mei swap places again and get stuck that way; Shen Qingqiu has to deal with Original LBH while LBH has to deal with the original setting and its fallout.
Three Wishes by Kasasagi - this author is a real Shen Jiu fan, I'm not so much but I really got into this one. Shen Yuan accidentally rescues Original Shen Qingqiu out of the Water Prison back to his world and then has to deal with an extremely traumatized ex-peak lord in his apartment.
*Recommended with caveat - I Just Wanna Be Yours by chaoticgoodlawyer, starts with some of the characters time traveling to bring warnings of the future to their past selves and continues with a fix-it of the main timeline. I liked this one especially for the way it handles Tianlang-jun's story, but this author really has a knife in for Yue Qingyuan for some reason, so I don't so much like their handling of his character in this

WIP Game!
Rules: Make a 24-hour poll with the names of your WIPs, let it run. Then write one sentence for every vote the winner received.
Which one of these WIPs do you want me to work on next?
Optional hard mode: every WIP on this list will be worked on. Your votes are for the number of sentences.
Since tumblr polls do have limits I wasn’t able to include all my WIPs, so I focused on only fics that have been posted on ao3. If you have questions about any fics I haven’t included, let me know. It would be great to know what fics people are still interested in reading. If you need a refresher about my fics, find them here.
(I wasn’t tagged, but saw this posted by @whetstonefires and thought this might help me figure out what to work on. So, in that spirit, I tag everyone out there who needs some inspiration in returning to their WIPs.)

first lines meme
I’ve been tagged by @kuwdora a million years ago.
Rules:  Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able to and see if there are any patterns!
The first question for "what's my style of opening lines" is "am I trying to copy the narrative voice of canon?" Because if so, it's fairly distinctive. You can see that in both Righteousness and Respectability and Goodfellow. Both Jane Austen and Peter Grant have very distinct narrative voices, and I was doing my best homage to that right from the get-go. I think I was more successful with Austen than Aaronovitch.
Other than that, I tend to start in media res, dropping you into the middle of the action--or the conversation. So Revenge of the Zillo Beast starts near the end of a time loop, Five Times Abigail Met … begins in the middle of a conversation, with Abigail reacting to what Peter is asking, Schoolwork starts (again) in the middle of a conversation between Jake and his grandfather Joseph.
The Green Lady. Vorkosigan, Delia/Duv, 12k, rated G.
The first time Delia saw the woman, it was after a party at the Residence and she assumed that the woman had gotten lost.
Essential To Your Own. Star Trek TNG, Data/Geordi, 3k, rated T.
Geordi was staring aimlessly at the warp drive.
Schoolwork. Star Trek DS9, Jake, 13k, rated G.
"So, when are you coming home?" Grampa asked.
Five Times Abigail Met People From the Demi-Monde, and One Time She Didn't. Rivers of London, Abigail, 5k, rated G.
Abigail stared at Peter. "So, what you're saying is, you want me to babysit your girlfriend's baby sisters."
Goodfellow. Rivers of London, Peter Grant, 13k, rated G.
There had been thefts at three successive Goblin Markets, and one incident of serious vandalism, before Robin Goodfellow had deigned to call in the munificent arm of the law—in this case, the Special Assessment Unit, colloquially known as the Folly, and disparagingly called the Isaacs by the demi-monde.
Righteousness and Respectability. Sense and Sensibility, Elinor and Marianne, 11k, rated T.
Mr. Henry Dashwood's first marriage had been a celebrated match, in its day.
Not Place, But People. Star Trek Enterprise, Trip and Lorian, 5k, rated G.
Trip leaned against the wall outside one of the many briefing rooms at Starfleet HQ and tried to occupy his mind with the latest paper put out by the Copernicus Institute on hypothetical designs for intermix chambers in warp engines.
The Grief of Knives. Goblin Emperor (Cemeteries of Amalo), Thara/Iäna, 2k, rated G.
I did not know how long it would take for the Archprelate to send a more formal message with details of the assignment he had for me.
A Grief Shared. Star Trek TNG, Picard/Guinan, 2k, rated G.
Jean-Luc had been out wandering around the vineyard, soaking in the sun and indulging in a bit of nostalgia.
Revenge of the Zillo Beast, Star Wars Prequels, Mace and Anakin, 4k, rated G.
Mace stared down at the Zillo Beast's corpse, wishing for the thousandth time that the time loop started earlier.
tagging @tielan, @whetstonefires, @merfilly, @alexseanchai, @taraljc, and anyone else who wants to do it.

First Lines Meme
nabbed from @beatrice-otter & @whetstonefires
Rules:  Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able to, and see if there are any patterns!
Investigations Into Interoffice Relations: Man of Steel, 5 Times Jenny Shipped Lois & Clark AKA 5 Times Lois & Clark Didn't Say "I Love You." Slightly comedic, slightly dramatic, slightly smutty.
Everyone working at the Daily Planet went to Caffe Artigiano for their break.
A Flame in Two Cupped Hands: Man of Steel, coffee shop AU. Six years and two thousand coffee cups separated Lois and Clark's first real hello and last real good-bye.
Flirting with the new waiter at her usual café was quickly becoming a favourite past time for Lois.
Itch: Man of Steel, one-shot, < 5000 words which is practically a drabble for me
The back of Lois' brain itched.
Made It Rain: MCU, Taserhawk, another <5000, I guess I was trying to write weekly?
See, there was this woman...
Break Your Own Heart: MCU, Taserhawk, dramedy
Darcy never chose the wrong kind of guy for her boyfriends.
E Minus Too Few Hours: MCU, Captain Hill, Steve Rogers has a brilliant plan but Maria Hill begs to differ
With just enough time to nap before the mission, Maria slipped into the cot beside him.
Kay Nicte (Take off your clothes, let down your hair): MCU-BPWF, Nashuri, No Powers AU, proof that I can only make porn with plot
“Have you ever fucked up so badly you’re sure there’s no way to make it better?”
Kiss Me By the Fence Rails: MCU-BPWF, Nashuri, Attoye, Shuri wants Namor's help seducing her high school crush, Namor is gonna try to shoot his shot, Attuma & Okoye are just trying not to slap their idiot bosses. WIP.
"How do you feel about dates and sex with me?"
Beautifully Created: MCU-BPWF, Attoye, minor Nashuri, AU Canon divergence, Wakanda knew about Talokan when Namor made his ultimatum by the river. WIP.
He did not recognize her.
The Pearl I Carry in My Heart: MCU-BPWF, Nashuri, minor Attoye, post-canon enemies to friends to lovers, world-building, political, sci-fi monstrosity that ate my life for 8 months.
He planned it all, of course.
*~°~*~°~*~°~*
I fully expected all my first lines to be rambling run-on sentences. I'm pleasantly surprised that they're mostly short; dare I even say, punchy. 😜 4/10 starting sentences had under 6 words; the remaining had nary a single semi-colon.
6/10 did not immediately reveal the narrator.
Only 3/10 started with dialogue. It would be interesting to do the last sentence version of this because I'm sure I almost always end a scene with speech/dialogue.
Does anyone else see other patterns?
Soft, no-pressure tag to @pilesofpillows @gaal-dornick @umber-cinders @princess-of-gondor @dasphinxone

hello! i really like that the other dashboard options are now on desktop, but there's a thing about them that's been annoying me, and it's how every time i scroll up even a little they pop up again. i'm sure that's useful for people who have endless scrolling abled, but it's not really that much when you don't, so i was wondering if it would be much trouble to deactivate it when you uncheck endless scrolling? thank you so much <3
Hey, @ntshastark!
We’re sorry to say that we won’t be able to make this change completely. The idea of the dashboard tab bar is to encourage you good folk to visit those tabs, especially when you’ve scrolled through the dashboard a lot and may want to leave Tumblr instead of stick around. But we can definitely fine-tune how sensitive that scroll behavior is, so it’s not so sudden. Thank you warmly for your thoughts and feedback.
Thanks also to @hte-spagheti, @zell, @falderaletcetera, @whetstonefires, and @invisiblefoxfire, who all got in touch with the same question.
Love,
—Cyle (Tumblr Engineering)

Rules: Make a new post and post the latest line in your WIP & tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you feel like).
Tagged by @whetstonefires
Doing this because I find it funny lol. I haven't written like anything since last year but I'm still thinking about this au and was actually poking at it a bit in july lol. It's entirely self indulgent since it's a Star Wars AU for Rise of the Phoenixes (a tv show that has less than 100 works on ao3 so I have to write my own fic ;__;). But I have feelings about it.
"So glad you're on board! Prep the ship for me? I have one more piece of business to take care of in town before we go."
I don't feel like tagging people but feel free to tag me so I can see what y'all are working on :3c

Rules: Make a new post and post the latest line in your WIP & tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you feel like).
Tagged by... god, many people. Most recently @whetstonefires! And [scrolls back through mentions] @oathkeeperoxas, it seems! And... I think... @frostbitebakery? Frost this is a snip that's safe to read ;)
So due to the fact that my last line is "Damn it" and that seems like a bit of a cop out considering how many people have tagged me that I have... not done this for, I'm gonna give a scene and change from Operation Groundhog AU. Under the cut! Featuring: my pain re trying to make it clear which character I am referring to when it is an older and younger version of the same person LOL
And because I had to use a cut, I'm just mentioning that I'm no pressure tagging @asukaskerian, @goddammitjim, @hawkeykirsah, @joisbishmyoga, ...who else. @hangsterwheel, @lambourngb, @doodledrawreblogs... yeah we'll go with that LOL that's already a lot
Maverick catches up to younger him outside the door to the base. “Maverick,” he calls. The kid doesn’t even slow down. “Hey, kid! Lieutenant Mitchell!”
The kid stops in his tracks, turning around to look. “Sorry, sir, but I’m a bit busy--”
“You’re a bit busy leaving base without being dismissed,” Maverick says, and comes to a stop in front of himself, frowning. “Let me go after Lieutenant Kazansky. Go back inside.”
The kid stiffens, eyes narrowing. “Sir,” he says, pulling himself up to his full height. “I don’t feel a reprimand for Iceman is warranted--”
Aw, that’s cute.
“Why don’t you let me worry about Iceman,” he says again. “I promise I’ll return him in working order in a few minutes. Seems he and I need to have a chat.”
“Sir, if you’ll just let me--”
“No,” Maverick says.
The kid pauses, eyes narrowing. “No?”
“No,” Maverick says. He’s getting a bit annoyed now. “I gave you an order, Lieutenant. Go on back inside.”
“I can talk him back down!” the kid says.
“I’m sure you can,” Maverick says. “But you’re not going to. I am his superior officer. Go back inside.”
“You--”
“I am also your superior officer,” Maverick interrupts. “You, Lieutenant, are out of line. You’re going to let me talk to my aviator--alone--or you’re going to find yourself with bigger problems.”
The kid scowls at him, furious and right in his face. Maverick can practically see the gears turning in his head. Go ahead, Maverick thinks viciously. Go on, hotshot. Ask me what I can do to you.
He could pull him off the mission, is what he could do. He could send Ice out in an unfamiliar fighter on a suicide mission without a Maverick to watch his back.
Maverick watches the exact moment that occurs to this younger version of himself--the moment he freezes, pulls back just a very little bit.
The kid eyes Maverick for a long minute. Maverick raises an eyebrow back.
“...Yes, sir,” Lieutenant Mitchell barks, drawing himself to attention, jaw clenched tight.
“Good man,” Maverick says, and walks straight past him. “Return to the debrief room, if you please.”
The kid manages, through what Maverick assumes is an effort that should be honored with some sort of medal, not to call Maverick an asshole.
It’s for your own damn good, Maverick thinks, and keeps walking. One thing at a time. First, he’s got a Lieutenant Kazansky to track down, on orders from an Admiral.
-
Maverick does not go back inside. He watches the Captain continue on past the parking lot, quick-marching off in the direction he couldn’t possibly have seen Ice go but apparently guessed anyway.Maverick grits his teeth, and then sighs, rubbing his hand over his face and nearly dislodging his capt. He pulls it back straight and sits down, just for a minute, and tries to calm down. Damn it. Damn it.
